ENTERTAINING READERS & WORKING HARD FOR OUR ADVERTISERS

Welcome

C

an you believe it’s been eight weeks since you received your last issue of Village Link. I’m scared to blink these days in case I open my eyes and it’s 2072 and I’m lying in a retirement home with no teeth. Stepped outside the house the other morning and caught the wonderful scent of freshly cut grass. I could hear the buzz of the lawnmower nearby, so just took a moment to breath in some spring morning air. Lovely that is, until I googled why cut grass smells. Horrified, I read that the scent of freshly cut grass – the scent that gives you an uplifting feeling (even if you do suffer from hay fever..I do..in fact, my eye is imploding as I write this) is actually the plants distress mechanism when it is being injured by our lawnmowers! A group of German scientists studying a wild tobacco plant noticed that the compounds it released, called green leaf volatiles or GLVs, were very specific. When the plants were infested by caterpillars, the plants released a distress GLV that attracted predatory bugs who like to eat the caterpillars in question. Don’t worry though...cutting the grass won’t result in getting eaten by some predatory monster replying to the grass’ distress call. However, I can’t quite get out of my mind that a

Spaghetti con Gamberetti

I

FOOD

Mouth-watering inspiration from food editor Jane Ferguson

find pottering in my kitchen quite a relaxing thing to do, however, there are times when it drives me absolutely crazy. It’s all the beeping. The fridge, microwave, washer, dryer etc etc. Take my fridge for example. When I am putting my shopping away I can feel my stress levels rise as I try and beat it before it starts beeping at me. If I am taking slightly longer than usual I know that in any given second my fridge is going to start telling me off. I do realise you can disable the beep, however, there are times when the fridge door has been left slightly ajar and the beep comes in very handy. So in this case I will just have to shut up and put up. On the other hand the major beep menace in my kitchen is my tumble dryer. It is not actually in the kitchen, it is in the utility room which unfortunately is adjacent to the kitchen. My old dryer recently packed in and we bought a new one which I can’t for the life of me fathom out. I have worked out a setting which does dry everything so I stick with that, however, it must beep a dozen times before the cycle finishes and I can’t understand why! I find myself shouting ‘shut up, shut up, SHUT UP!!’ to a machine! We are going

to have to work it out soon because I can see myself having a Basil Fawlty moment whereby I get a branch or stick and start thrashing it. Anyhow, let’s move on to more positive aspects of a kitchen. Now I know it is not everybody’s cup of tea but I actually find it quite relaxing pottering in the kitchen especially at the weekend when I have a bit more time. And of course you can have the obligatory glass of wine whilst doing so. This is a great weekend meal – Jamie Oliver’s ‘Spaghetti with Prawns and Rocket’ – Cook 455g dried spaghetti in salted boiling water until cooked through. Heat 3 good lugs of extra virgin olive oil in a large frying pan and toss 2 peeled and finely chopped garlic cloves and between 1 and 2 dried red chillies crumbled. As the garlic begins to colour, add 400g peeled raw prawns and sauté them for a minute. Then add 1 small wineglass of white wine,

2 heaped tablespoons of sun-dried tomato purée and simmer for a couple of mins. When the pasta is ready, drain it in a colander, reserving a little of the cooking water. Toss the spaghetti with the sauce, squeeze in the juice of one lemon, add a handful of chopped rocket and add a little of the reserved cooking water if you want to loosen the sauce a bit. Sprinkle with the grated lemon zest of one lemon and some further rocket leaves. Serves 4 people – Buon Appetito!

PEARL OF WISDOM Americans say ‘shrimp’, while Aussies and Brits say ‘prawn’ - but are these really two names for the same thing, or is there a difference? Biologically speaking, they are actually different species. Prawns have claws on three of their five pairs of legs, shrimp have claws on two of their five pairs of legs. Their gills and body shape are different too. But as far as cooking them goes, they are virtually identical and interchangeable.

Take life with a pinch of salt - A wedge of lime, and a shot of tequila.

Full installation service from design through to completion. We can transform your old bath into an easy accessible walk in shower. It all starts innocently, mixing chocolate and Rice Krispies, but before you know it you’re adding raisins and marshmallows – it’s a rocky road!

WATCHTREE NATURE RESERVE

Watchtree is a fabulous place to cycle. Specially prepared tracks allow cyclists to explore all areas of the Nature Reserve. At the heart of this provision are the Watchtree Wheelers. The simple pleasure of riding a bike is often taken for granted and the Wheelers work hard to get people on bikes. Throughout the year they make it possible for all people to ride – no matter what obstacles might stand in their way. If people have a problem and it involves bikes, the Wheelers can probably help. Just get in touch! The Wheelers also specialise in riding for disabled and disadvantaged people with a fleet of adapted bikes for use by the public. The Wheelers run entirely from the generosity of their users and supporters, all funds raised through cycle hire, sales and training are reinvested into the project. However, they also work hard to support other charities. This year Watchtree Nature Reserve are teaming up with Eden Valley Hospice to host ‘Cycle the Solway’ on 21st & 22nd July 2018. Saturday 21st: 50km and 100km Sportives touring round the quiet lanes of the Solway coast starting and finishing at Watchtree. Both routes are marshalled and have feed stations along with full medical support. Sunday 22nd: Family cycling day at Watchtree Nature Reserve doing laps of the new cycle trails in a safe traffic free environment. How many laps can you do?? For everyone from 2 to 92!! Lots of special guests and activities for everyone! All proceeds will go towards the Eden Valley Hospice, Jigsaw and Watchtree Nature Reserve

Café Lingo

4th Anniversary Four years ago, three women established foreign language conversation sessions at Tullie House Museum in Carlisle. Anna Strycharczyk, Puerto Baker and Marie Buttler set up Café Lingo where people can come and practise their French, German, Spanish, Italian and Polish with fellow language enthusiasts. It’s aim is to give people, old and young, who can speak a language the chance to practice and develop their skills with other like-minded individuals. Between 10 am and noon on the final Friday of each month, language enthusiasts buy a coffee from the museum café then join a conversation table in the ‘Language Lounge’. Each table has a flag of the country whose language will be used. Sessions are free but those attending are able to at least hold a simple conversation in their desired tongue. With up to 50 people attending each month, Café Lingo goes from strength to strength. If you are interested in going along to café Lingo the next dates are 25th May and 22nd June. idden away just off the A7, between Longtown and Brampton is Kirklinton Hall and Gardens. The 17th Century Hall sits in 14 acres of gardens. It is being restored by it’s current owner, Christopher Boyle QC. The Hall and Gardens are open each year from 1st April to 30 September. They are open weekdays and Sundays 12-5pm, prices have remained static since opening in 2013, adults £4, children £1. Season tickets are available which last 12 months are £22 for a family, £10 per single. ‘My Cumbria’ and ‘Historic Houses’ cardholders get free entry. There is much to discover, and many an hour can be spent getting away from it all there, indeed you can even stay overnight. They have a campsite, or a yurt if you fancy a bit of luxury! Shower facilities and a camp kitchen are included. The gardens are well cared for, it is part-walled and a magnificent compliment to Christopher and his hard-working gardening team. Hundreds of tulips and daffodils are planted during the winter, lawns are lush green,

fruits - apples, pears and quinces - grow in the orchard, and orange trees embellish even the walls of the Hall itself. You can ‘pick your own’ when the gardens are in full flourish. Pick a trug full of beautiful, organic produce to take home and enjoy. The jams and chutneys are made on site using produce from the gardens, and to recipes designed exclusively for the Hall. Visit the famous Faerie Glen, see how many you can spot, there may be a treat if you find them all! One of the dragon eggs has hatched, and Ruby has taken up residence in the dragon’s lair – she is very friendly, pop along and say hello to her. Take a walk along to the Captain’s Seat, just a short distance from the Hall. Or walk further along the banks of the River Lyne, taking in the flora and fauna surrounding you. Don’t forget the pigs and ducks! Shortly to be followed by some rabbits. The pig palace is behind the walled garden, the duck temple is just beyond the terraces, but they can usually be found waddling all over the site! Homemade cakes, scones and traybakes can be found in the tearoom, along with ice creams and sweet treats. Sandwiches and wraps will be available on Sundays, Bank Holidays and school

holidays. Enjoy a cup of tea, or even a glass of something. Pippa Sedgwick is the wine supplier, you can find a selection of her wines in the shop, along with beers from Tirril Brewery and cider from Waulkmill Cider. The Hall is available to hire for weddings and private events on Saturdays. No two are the same. Enjoy the blank canvas this venue offers, and take full advantage of being able to let your imagination run riot!

TREE STUMP Removal

local arborist Andrew Edgar, [orchard tree surgery and MAINTENANCE] shares his experience AND TIPS ON TREES AND SHRUBS You can remove tree stumps at any time of year but now is a good a time, before the damp, autumn weather promotes the growth of fungal infections which could spread to healthy plants.

There are two principle ways to remove a stump: the quickest is physically removing it (either by digging or grinding it out) or you can apply chemical treatments to kill the stump, so it will eventually rot down. We’ll look briefly at both methods and we’d recommend the RHS website for further advice. Physical Removal A stump grinding machine is a practical option of most tree stumps. If you have a larger tree stump to deal with, a stump grinding machine could be a practical option. These grind down the main root plate, leaving only sawdust to be disposed of. It is worth thinking about how deep you need to grind, depending on what you intend to use the area for afterwards; if you’re turfing, you’re not likely to need to go as deep as if you’re re-landscaping, for example. Either way, some smaller roots will be left in the ground but these will just rot away in time. As with any machinery, stump grinders should be used with care.

10

Chemical Removal There are a number of root and stump killers on the market and we’d recommend reading the packaging carefully so you can select one that is appropriate to your circumstances. Autumn or winter are the best times to apply treatment, rather than the spring when sap will be rising in a still-living stump. Treatments need to be applied to freshly cut stump, where the living tissue around the edge will take it up most effectively. Once treated, it’s worth covering the stump with a plastic sheet to prevent rain washing the treatment away. As with all chemicals, read the instructions carefully and take the appropriate precautions – such as gloves, goggles or boots – when using it. Be careful to protect other plants and animals from the chemicals. Eco-Plugs EcoPlugs are handy capsules that deliver a dose of treekilling chemical in contained way. They are growing in popularity amongst tree professionals and landscapers because of their relative ease of use. How do they work? When a tree has just been felled, a

ring of small holes is drilled around the outer, living cambian layer of the tree stump. When an EcoPlug capsule is then tapped into each hole, it bursts, delivering a dose of chemical and sealing the hole at the same time. Different quantities of capsules will be needed depending on the species and size of the tree, but guidelines are provided. The targeted approach generally means less chemicals are required than traditional methods. They take up to 2 months to kill the tree’s root system, depending on the time of year they are applied, but the manufacturers suggest that stump decomposition time is about half what it would be. Because the chemical is contained within the hole, when used correctly, EcoPlugs can be a much safer option for both wildlife and humans. Most EcoPlugs contain glyphosate as their active ingredient, a pesticide that has been in use for over 30 years. Glyphosate is broken down by the natural carbon dioxide, nitrate, phosphate and oxygen found in soils, helping to reduce its impact on the environment once it has done its job on the tree stump. To find out more about the services Orchard Tree Surgery LTD can offer or if you have a tree stump you would like removed please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

The Marina Bay area is a favourite of mine and though a meal and drinks may cost a little more here it’s worth every penny to be able to relax in one of the bars or restaurants and watch the fabulous Laser show they put on most nights from the Marina Bay hotel. Ever been on a night Safari? Well in Singapore you can embark on an trip that will allow you to do just that. Be amongst the wildlife and see all types of amazing animals in this nocturnal zoo that has surprises around every corner. A great way to get around Singapore is the hop on hop off bus. For around 45SGD you can get a 12 hour pass that will take you all over the city and allow you to sample all the sights and get right in amongst the locals. Singapore is a luscious city that is very green in the fact that everywhere you look there are trees and plants and flowers in this tropical place, even on the sky scrapers. A city that steels your heart and entices you back for a second visit as one visit is never enough.

hris, 38, was born and raised in Carlisle. He started his working career in local bistros until, at the age of 23, he decided to venture to London. He worked in various Restaurants for a couple of years, before returning home to Carlisle, aged 25. Most of his time was then spent working in the Lake District, mainly Grasmere, Appleby and Cockermouth and mostly in country house hotels. His career

highlight so far has been cooking for his favourite band Iron Maiden whilst they were attending a friend’s wedding in the Lake District. Chris worked at the hotel for a while before leaving to help his mum, Brenda Dowding with the family business, cooking up all sorts of treats for her guests, before returning to the hotel as Head Chef. Chris’s first task was to review the menus being offered, the result being the new Waltons Bar menu, now available.

LAWN MOWERS GET MORE TIME TO ENJOY YOUR GARDEN THANKS TO THE HUSQVARNA AUTOMOWER®

W

hile a garden is often a place of enjoyment and relaxation, keeping it neat and tidy can be timeconsuming and hard work. Luckily for those who prioritise leisure or who find mowing their lawn a chore not a pleasure, there’s the Automower® range from robotic-mowing pioneers, Husqvarna. After all, why spend time mowing your lawn when you can let a machine do it for you? But how do they work? After a free, no-obligation site visit, we install an underground boundary wire with a safe low-voltage electrical current running through it. The mower works unsupervised within the boundaries and can be controlled via a smartphone app. It automatically returns to the charge station to recharge the battery then continues mowing again. These mowers can handle large and very complex gardens, and can also tackle slopes up to 45%. How loud are they? They are incredibly quiet - as little as 58 dB(A) - so you can even programme

We supply and d soft deliver hard an ed wood Guarante ’ ‘Ready to Burn

them to work through the night without disturbing anyone. State-of-the-art safety features mean you can be in the garden when it is cutting: they will gently drive into an object and drive off in another direction thanks to collision sensors while lift sensors mean the blades will stop

They produce such small grass cuttings that they drop between the grass roots and disappear back into the soil, feeding the lawn and removing the need to collect the grass immediately if they are lifted. The products are fully weatherproof and can be used in the rain. Where does the grass go? The robotic mowers are designed to cut little and often so your grass will always be maintained to the same length, giving it the appearance of a lush green carpet.

Constant cutting also prevents weeds from getting established so it does all the hard work for you and you also end up with an even better-looking lawn. Not only does the Husqvarna Automower® save you time, but it also saves you money, typically using the same amount of energy as a lightbulb. They can cover areas up to 5000 sqm per machine and more than one machine can be used for larger areas, however you don’t have to have a huge lawn to reap the benefits as the smaller models will happily manage a compact suburban garden. If it is time you value the most or if you find mowing the lawn too physical a task, then this impressive machine will give you back all those hours spent walking up and down your garden when there are no doubt other things you would much rather be doing! If you would like to learn more or book your free, no-obligation site visit, then please contact your local Authorised Husqvarna dealer, Lloyd Ltd’s Lawncare Sales Specialists, Ben Irving at Lloyd Lawn & Leisure Carlisle or Clive Lawson at Lloyd Ltd Penrith.

• NO EFFORT • NO CUTTINGS • NO NOISE • NO FUSS NO NEED TO MISS THE SUNSHINE! Do robotic lawn mowers work? Yes, it’s lawncare simplified.

A great looking lawn can be a lot of hard work. With a robotic lawn mower, the grass gets mowed automatically - around the clock without your supervision. Cuttings are small enough that you won’t need to rake the clippings, adding valuable nutrients back to the soil - and there’s no need to empty any grass boxes. One way to prevent too many weeds is to frequently mow your grass. The Husqvarna Automower does just that as it mows your lawn every day. For more information on the Husqvarna range of automowers or to arrange a demonstration contact our Lawn and Gardens experts on the numbers below.

How To Give a Cat a Pill: Pick cat up and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat’s mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow. Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process. Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away. Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right fore-finger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten. Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse from garden. Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by feline. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat’s throat vigorously. Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for gluing later. Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw. Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink glass of water to take taste away. Apply band-aid to spouse’s forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap. Retrieve cat from neighbour’s shed. Get another pill. Place cat in cupboard and close door onto neck to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with elastic band. Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus jab. Throw T-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom. Ring fire brigade to retrieve cat from tree across the road. Apologise to neighbour who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil-wrap. Tie cat’s front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table, find heavy duty pruning gloves from shed. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of fillet steak. Hold head vertically and pour 2 pints of water down throat to wash pill down. Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order new table. Arrange for RSPCA to collect cat and ring local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters. Excellent value for money with high exposure
