Village Link ENTERTAINING READERS & WORKING HARD FOR OUR ADVERTISERS
Welcome
S
o, as Alice Cooper rightly observed, soon school will indeed be ‘out for the summer’, and with that cry, many families go on their annual holiday to all sorts of wonderful destinations. Sadly though, first, you have to tackle the airport. I’m not alone either in my hatred of airports. A report I read recently said that millions of Brits find airports so stressful that they have given up flying altogether, with 4 in 10 who did fly, found their experience to be “stressful”. I’m reminded of trip I made with my wife a couple of years ago. I was (and I quote) ‘whisking my wife away on a romantic trip to Paris’. In my head, I had imagined being very prepared, leaving for the airport way earlier than required, plenty of time to check-in, pass easily through security, possibly even getting a cheeky latte before strolling to the gate, arm in arm. So much for “strolling”. First came the nightmare of the traffic, which came to a complete standstill on the M74, setting us back a whole hour. ‘Car Park A’ where we were told our ‘pre-paid parking space’ would be, had up and vanished, resulting in me having to throw all our holiday money in an NCP car park. Then, on reaching the security checkpoint, I was locked in a staring contest with a security guard who clearly saw me as a potential security threat, carrying enriched uranium in my holdall, oh and probably a fire hazard too. It’s the moment you walk through the metal detectors, praying they don’t go off. Which of course they do. Take your shoes off. Get your keys out your pocket. Get that bracelet off. Throw that £2.50 bottle of
Evian in the bin, it just became combustible. And then you are forced to claw at your belongings trying to get them out of the tray as fast as humanly possible, Why? Because everyone else is doing it this fast - that’s why, we just copy others behaviour. Confirmation that the ‘romantic’ part of our trip was over, came as I turned round whilst running to the gate, to see my poor wife running/hopping barefoot with one shoe in her hand, holding her unfastened jeans, belt in hand, hair dishevelled, only to find out that Gate 2A is, surprisingly, not right next to Gate 2B, but in a different terminal building. Come on dear, run! Why don’t things ever happen as I’ve planned them in my head. Congratulations to Cathryn Baker who entered the Book Review competition and won a copy of the newly released book by H.G.Wills ‘Room 22 Revisited’. From all at Village Link HQ, we Cathryn offer our sincere condolences to Baker Patricia (see full story on page 20).

Allonby and the Hougomont
T
he Hougomont was a 4-masted barque of 2,240 tons, built in 1897 by Messrs John Hardie of Greenock, which had a rather accident prone career. The Hougomont left San Francisco for Liverpool on 9 October 1902 with a Cargo of 1000 tons wheat, 1000 tons barley and 1900 tons tinned fruit and salmon in cases. The passage of 123 days hit bad weather and the ship was driven to leeward and anchored in Maryport Roads on 25 February 1903. Unfortunately on the night of the 26th a hurricane blew up and the ship parted from the tug “Brilliant Star and was driven up the Solway Firth to be stranded in Allonby Bay at 6 a.m. on 27 February. The crew, in the after rigging, were taken off by the Maryport lifeboat. Thousands of cans of fruit and salmon were strewn along the beach. It was the equivalent of ‘Whisky Galore’ for the people of
Allonby . There was great excitement in the village. No lives were lost but the villagers mounted a ‘salvage operation’. The crates contained tins of salmon, peaches and pears but were unlabelled. The only way to tell which was which was by shaking them; if the contents moved, it was fruit. A good time (and a few good meals) were had by all! The Hougomont was refloated on the 5th March by the tug ‘Ranger’ and taken into Senhouse dock, Maryport where some cargo was discharged. Some months later, after a refit, she sailed for Victoria B.C. and was sold to the Eriksson line, Finland, as one of a grain fleet for Australia. She suffered at least three more accidents in later years. In 1910 nine men were flushed overboard when a rogue wave hit her stern in a hurricane. Five men were flushed back onboard by the next wave, but the remaining four were never seen again. Finally in 1933 she was dismasted off Australia and was sunk to act as a breakwater. PEARL OF WISDOM Is it Afternoon Tea or High Tea? Afternoon Tea became the bridge between meals for the upper classes because many wouldn’t eat their evening meal until maybe 8pm. The working classes ran to a different schedule and a different budget. A wearied factory worker wouldn’t arrive home until six in the evening, and when he did, he was famished! Thus, in the industrial areas of the UK (northern England and southern Scotland), the working classes evening meal evolved: high tea.

veryone loves an afternoon tea. But where did this custom originate? Apparently afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. The Duchess would become hungry around four o’clock in the afternoon. The evening meal in her household was served fashionably late at eight o’clock leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner. The Duchess asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her.
This pause for tea became a fashionable social event. During the 1880’s upper-class and society women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea which was usually served in the drawing room between four and five o’clock. And there you have it, the afternoon tea was born. One cake which is a must have in an afternoon tea is the humble scone. I have tried many scone recipes but always revert back to my all-time favourite which is
Please mention The Village Link when responding to adverts
Delia’s buttermilk scone recipe. These scones are very light and do not contain any kind of baking soda, which you can always tell is used and not in a good way. Before I give you Delia’s recipe here are a couple of tips for making the perfect scone. (1) Do not over knead. Once the dough has come together, handle it as little as possible. (2) Don’t roll it too thin, (no less than 1”), in fact I often don’t roll the dough at all, I just pat it lightly down with my hands. And (3) make sure your oven is pre-heated and hot. I tend to double up Delia’s recipe as follows: Pre-heat the oven to 220 degrees. Sieve 450g SR flour in a bowl, and add 80g sugar. Rub in 150g of butter or margarine until it forms breadcrumbs. In a separate jug mix 2 eggs with approx. 4/5 tablespoons buttermilk. Add this to the scone mixture slowly until it forms a ball. Roll out on to a floured board to about 1” thick (no less). Cut out the scones with a cutter and place on a baking tray. Cook at the top of the hot oven for 10 to 12 mins. Serve fresh with strawberries and cream. Delicious.

Motor Review
A
s I sat in the drivers seat of this new Merc, I was instantly taken back to the 80’s. When I were a lad, I remember watching the 80’s hightech film Tron, and being blown away! It was the first film to really get a hold of technology and computer animation producing amazing special effects. The distinctive TRON logo in electric blue, the motorbike with its awesome 90 degree turns all trimmed in electric blue neon – they were exciting times. Apart from the massive LCD dashboard, which is actually bigger than my telly at home, the cabin has ambient lighting under the dashboard, around the door handles and centre console, the colour was a Tron-like Electric Blue. I wasn’t sit-
6
ting in a car, oh no, I was sitting in a high-tec computer. Apparently, the new Mercedes Benz E-Class is the future. Possibly it may even be the future! Have I just been back to the future? I’m confused now. I’m sure you’ll have heard all about autonomous driving (me neither), well it seems this new E is the car we’ve all been waiting for. High on an epic list of new technologies is Drive Pilot, which uses a stereo camera, radar sensors and a modestly-sized box of tricks secreted in the rear wing to drive the car autonomously, accelerating, braking, changing lane and even coming to a complete halt without any input from the driver. The new E-class also extends Merc’s ‘car-to-X
communication’ smartphone and Cloud-based infrastructure, relaying info or warnings from further up the road. Yip, reality it seems, really is that terrifying now. But what if you still like the idea of actually driving? Is the traditional driver doomed? Don’t be so melodramatic. After all, aeroplanes have been landing themselves for years. Besides, the answer’s academic, because the only thing restricting autonomous driving right now is the necessary international legal infrastructure. So we’d better get used to the idea. One very smart feature that will help you not to be tempted to check your Facebook status, or eat a meal while your driving, is that if you take your hands off the wheel, a warning chime will sound, and if you keep them off the wheel longer than 60 seconds the car will assume you’re a moron or have passed out, and glide carefully to a complete stop. Very clever indeed!! Apparently they are currently testing this new technology using HGV’s on the M6. Surely they’d have been better off testing a teeny Toyota Aygo! The new E Class is a masterpiece on so many levels, and what will top it off will be the 350d engine which is due to be released later in the year.

inheritance rights for
UNMARRIED COUPLES
by Butterworths Solicitors, Carlisle
M
any unmarried couples may not realise that they are not recognised in law. Under the laws of intestacy (dying without having made a Will) an unmarried partner is only entitled to jointly owned assets. Any assets held in the deceased’s sole name will not automatically pass to their partner. Rather, if the couple have children the estate of the deceased will pass to them when they are 18. If there are no children, the estate will pass to the deceased’s closest relatives parents, brothers, sisters etc. etc. but never to the surviving partner. The surviving partner would be entitled to bring a claim under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 (‘75 Act’)
any assets held in tHE deceased’s sole name will not automatically pass to their partner
so long as they had been cohabiting for at least two years prior to the death as husband and wife, in the same household. This however is not straightforward, would be very
costly and would involve instructing specialist inheritance dispute solicitors to pursue a formal ’75 Act claim through the Courts. The Law Commission recognises this irregularity in the law and in recent years there have been two major reports by the Law Commission which recommended giving cohabitants greater rights in the areas of property, intestacy and family provision. The Government however has not, as yet, moved to implement any of these proposals. This means that, if you are in a long-term relationship but not husband and wife or civil partners, you have to plan your financial affairs more carefully than those who are married or in a civil partnership. You can make things easier for your surviving partner and family by having a Will in place. Here at Butterworths we would strongly advise that you do this thereby easing the burden for your surviving partner at what would be a very difficult time. Our usual fees for the preparation of Wills are £135 plus VAT for a single Will and £199 plus VAT for a pair of Wills. If the Wills are more complex our charges may differ, however, we would advise you of this in advance.

he key to successful planting, whether it be a shrub, tree, perennial or bedding plant is to water in well. Soak the rootball in a bucket until no air bubbles come to the surface, dig the planting hole, fill with water and allow to drain away. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, firm gently and water well with a watering can - this will give the plant a huge advantage over one planted with a dry rootball in a dry hole and watered only on the surface. For recently planted large shrubs or trees, leave a hose trickling around the base for an hour. The same goes for established plants in very dry periods - pay particular attention to camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas and hydrangeas which will abort next season’s flowers if they get too dry. Mulch around the roots when moist to help avoid this. Recently planted hedges are best watered with a trickle hose (a length of old hose punctured with little holes) left running for an hour or so. Keep mowing your lawn but raise
the height of your blades if the weather remains hot. Feed established lawns if you haven’t already done so with a summer lawn feed. If your lawn is mossy or full of weeds, use a feed with mosskiller or weedkiller, although this will also kill any wild flowers. If you have the lot, use combined feed, weed and mosskiller!
We are committed to successfully promoting your business or venture
GARDENING
Don’t let newly laid lawns dry out in hot weather - water in the evenings and if there is a heat wave, consider leaving the lawn longer than usual just to help it through the hot weather. If you are planning to seed a new lawn in the autumn, start preparing the area to allow the earth time to settle.

or those who have tried a whisky, and immediately form this opinion on its taste, are missing out on something truly special. First of all, what was it you tried? A supermarket Jack Daniels, a smoky, peaty Laphroaig? Well no wonder you ‘don’t like whisky’. Whisky is vast minefield of stunning malts from all over the world, and believe me there is more than one whisky out there that you will adore. You need to match your palate with what you already love – this is easier than you think: If you love wine – what kind of wine do you like? Red, White, a heavy Rioja, a fruity Burgundy? Do you enjoy Sherry, Port or any fortified wine – Even Beer, what kind of beer you do you love, pale ale, stout, pilsner? There is a whisky to match your taste, and trust me whatever you like, the whisky version of your chosen palate is your beverage ‘enhanced’. Why? Well, myself for instance – I am a lover of red wine, particularly a hearty but soft and fruity Rioja, starting here enabled me to branch out into red wine matured whiskies, along with whiskies matured in sherry casks (fortified wine), the world I ventured into is one I would never go back on and has sent me on a journey of palate exploration with food and other beverages that have been missing from my life.
What is whisky maturing?
This is what makes a whisky – when a whisky begins its life is starts out as a beer like liquid - a mash of barley and spring water, this is then distilled into new make spirit, which is clear and mostly tasteless. The maturing process is what makes a whisky, whisky needs to be matured in an oak barrel for a minimum of three years until it can be called

a whisky, these barrels are where you obtain your flavour – wine, sherry, port etc. and the longer the maturation the more influence of your favourite beverage. One of my favourite whiskies – a Springbank 12 Year Old Burgundy Matured, is a wealth or red burgundy wine flavours which sweeten the spirit on the palate, flavours are big and bold, along with very welcome extras like maple syrup, cranberry and buttery brown toast. Whisky is a drink to be savoured and enjoyed neat or with a touch of water, don’t judge on your first sip you will only get the alcohol, take your time, smell it, chew it over, select what’s right for you and your developed palate – and believe me you will be back for more of this wonderful drink!

PRAGUE AND BUDAPEST ARE CHARMING CITIES, OVERFLOWING WITH ENCHANTING HISTORICAL, CULTURAL AND GA STRONOMICAL DELIGHTS. dawson & sanderson TELL US MORE...
Prague
A
compact city with lots to offer - you won’t be disappointed by the huge range of things to do in Prague. The centre itself is easily explored by foot although you may want to consider a trip on board a historical tram. Stroll down Wenceslas Square which is actually a long, elegant boulevard lined with shops, bars and restaurants. The National Museum, home to prehistoric relics overlooks the square with Prague State Opera just to the side. Visit the old town square with its world famous Astronomical Clock. Built in 1490, it is one of the oldest in the world and provides a popular hourly show. Take a back seat in a classical horse drawn carriage and enjoy a ride through an open air museum of architecture in the historical centre. For the more adventurous, why not try something completely different and see the sights of Prague on a segway. In my opinion, one of the best views of the old town is from one of the many pavement cafe’s where you’ll have ample opportunity to sample the native Pilsner. One of Prague’s most romantic sights is Charles Bridge spanning
over 16 arches and lined with 30 statues. The bridge throngs with people during the day where street artists sketch and musicians play. But for a truly romantic
walk to Petrin Tower – a scale model of the Eiffel Tower built in 1891 and less crowded stroll, try early morning or at sunset when you can admire the beautifully lit Prague Castle. Stroll across the bridge to the world’s largest ancient castle. With cobbled streets and incredible views from the castle walls, this area is not to be missed. Prague castle is over 1000 years old and has an hourly changing of the guard. Take the funicular railway up Petrin Hill, then walk to Petrin Tower – a scale model of the Eiffel Tower built in 1891, providing spectacular views1
Budapest
Sitting on the banks of the Blue Danube, Budapest is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. The city boasts magnificent sights lining both sides of the mighty river. Cross the Chain Bridge, a stunning suspension bridge which is
one of the city’s main attractions. The bridge is beautifully lit up at night and you can get a front row view from one of the restaurant boats nearby. The separate cities of Buda, Pest and Óbuda were united in 1873 to create a new capital, Budapest. On the Pest side, there’s the beautiful Gresham Palace, while on the Buda side you’re just a funicular ride away from Buda Castle where you can explore over 1000 years of Hungarian Art & History. Parliament building stretches for 268m along the banks of the Danube. Enjoy guided tours inside or simply admire the magnificent architecture of this famous landmark from outside. St Stephen’s Basilica dedicated to Hungary’s first king, is the largest church in Budapest. Discover one of the most sacred treasures, Stephen’s mummified right hand, and climb to the top to take in the impressive views. If you’re feeling fit, walk to the top of Gellért Hill, the highest point of Downtown Budapest and get the best panoramic views of the city. At the very top is the Citadella, a fortress-like building with views up and down the Danube river. Finish your walk (or start it) with a relaxing dip in the Gellért Baths at the foot of the hill or take your pick from the 15 thermal baths that are open to the public. A must see visit and on the ground floor of the Boscolo Hotel, you will find the New York Cafe considered to be the ‘most beautiful cafe in the world’. have always been a crafty-bod. I studied Contemporary Applied Arts at both Degree and Masters level at Cumbria Institute of the Arts, specialising in ceramics, graduating my Masters Degree in 2006. Since then I have always worked within the ceramics world, teaching and demonstrating at the University of Cumbria and freelance, but most importantly, setting up my own handmade ceramics business. I love what I do and I
do what I love! I’m very lucky. I make ranges of work for inside the home and outside in the garden, using a range of materials, techniques and processes to create the pieces. Textured papers, my Grandma’s old buttons, vintage-inspired decal transfers and my illustrations are lovingly combined. I also undertake commissions for bespoke pieces and occasions. Whats Fresh? Since having my beautiful son Herbie, my best piece of work to date I might add, I have decided to adapt the way I work. As of July 2016, Caroline Nash Handmade Ceramics is moving premises with partners-in-crime Tech4 Office Equipment to set up a new venture! Man of the Mountains, fellwalking enthusiast Stephen Robson, talks to the award winning outdoors filmmaker Terry Abraham. His latest film ‘Life of a Mountain: Blencathra’ is showing at Rheged until 11th Sep 2016
You hail from Nottinghamshire -what drew you to the lake district in the first place? I first visited the Lake District on a holiday when I was 13 yrs old. My grandfather was a farmer and gamekeeper in Sherwood Forest and he’s often take me out on long walks, camp out in the woods and so on. Even though I regularly popped up to the Lakes as a teenager it wasn’t until my late 20’s that it became an obsession to walk and camp on the fells with every spare moment I had. You don’t drive- do you feel a spiritual connection with Alfred Wainwright who used to catch a bus everywhere? Ha! It’s often remarked I’m considered a modern day Wainwright which is flattering but funnily enough
THIS FILM HAS has the majestic sweeping landscape shots and awe-inspiring time lapse sequences we’ve come to expect
I hadn’t given him any consideration until my late 20s. I had this image of a fuddy duddy old man who wrote some old style guidebooks. One wet day in the Lakes on a holiday soon put any prejudice I had to bed. My wife bought me one of his guides and from that point on I was in awe of AW and what he achieved. It’s true to say I don’t drive and rely on public transport and my feet. I smoke, have cats and am an animal lover and I consider Lakeland my spiritual home. A place I’d dearly love to move to one day. In many respects I think I do feel a spiritual
16
connection with AW. I suspect given our similar interests and background we think and feel the same about the fells and I sometimes wonder what he would’ve thought of the work I do now on camera. All said I’m my own man and so is AW and I should never be compared to his legendary status. Do you have a favourite fell? Not really no. I have several but I tend to think of things more organically. As in I have a favourite area and that would be Upper Eskdale; in fact throw Wasdale in too! For me there’s no finer place in all of Lakeland than exploring the little visited knolls and bogs of Upper Eskdale while admiring the towering cirque of fells above consisting of many people’s favourite summits. I also adore walking about Wasdale, around Nether Wasdale in particular. Have you ever tired of tramping the same terrain during the process of filming? Sometimes admittedly, yes. For example while working on my Blencathra documentary I’ve grown to loathe the route up and down Blease Fell. It’s the quickest, safest route up Blencathra but I’ve done it so many times, with heavy loads on my back, I shudder and feel rather morose just contemplating tackling the route! What safety equipment do you carry in your rucksack? I always take a water filter and spare clothes with me along with a first aid kit. Other than that, nothing. Just my camera gear and food. Sometimes ale too for morale on gloomy days. In winter I’ll have my ice axe and crampons of course. But I’m always careful when on the fells and to be honest I’ve been camped out in some truly horrendous conditions that most days what some may feel is awful weather, is just water off a duck’s back to me. Do you prefer walking alone or in company? I prefer to be alone but equally I’m happy with company too. I’m a sociable fella, but when out and about on the fells you won’t find me at any popular spots. I tend to avoid the crowds if I can.

This morning I bought myself some sensible walking boots and a little rucksack and set off for the Lake District. I walked for about 5 miles then I sat on a stone, opened my rucksack and poured a cup of coffee. Then I walked another 5 miles ... Sorry, I’m Rambling.

HEALTH
CALM THE
MIND
Written by Champion Cyclist and Pilates Instructor, Carol Westmorland
T
he late Muhammad Ali would race on foot alongside his, and my father would race behind his drafting on a road bike. I’m talking about he school bus. Me? Never sat on one. From the moment we started school we walked, often returning home for lunch too. Mums lunches were too good. My school lunch memorably consisted of a jacket potato with chips. Not nutritious at all. Mums lunch would be wholemeal and tasty with heaps of vegetables; it’s where I get my love for vegetables. Mum and I both adore nothing more than a very large bowl of peas; unadulterated. Our daily school walks easily covered six miles. I am certain this set me up for life.
I imagine everyone would be thrilled not to be involved in the school gate scrum We are designed for it and it does more to calm the mind than any other form of exercise. It is perfect pre-school and perfect post-school. If children walked or cycled, commerce would improve too. Those hours spent dropping and collecting would vanish. During the magic extra hours, heavenly meals could be created. I imagine everyone would be thrilled not to be involved in the school gate scrum. I have witnessed this from afar. I can hear some shouts of, “but we love kick out time, and all it entails, we really do”. In response, I would say you would love a walk or cycle more if you gave it a try. It releases feel good hormones. Something traffic jams can never do. My nine year old nephews now have Isla road bikes. These road bikes are, in my eyes, whizz bang and I don’t use that word lightly. They are mini road bikes perfectly proportioned with 26” wheels and two sets of brake levers. One conventional and the other on the bars meaning little hands can comfortably reach the important component that stops the bike. Unlike ‘cross’ bikes there is no suspension - they are in the true sense of the word road bikes and I would fully recommend them. Summer holidays are here. A perfect time to cycle and better still, no school bus. Visit www.bordercitywheelers.org.uk for information about Go Ride. NOTE from the editor
ur children’s competition ‘Where’s Bear’ has been running now for over five years and continues to bring a lovely smile to a child’s face as they receive their prize money, as well as lighting up our office here at Village Link HQ with the many wonderful photos we receive of bear waiting to be collected from his rescue home.
We spo ke to E mma fr Knoxw om ood Wil dli today w ho said fe Rescue Tru st :
This issue was no different, with pictures being emailed in from ‘Richard’, of bear with his rescue team, enjoying a cup of tea in the garden and having a snooze. (See pictures below). However, we have just received the sad news that Richard (who was actually a little old for the competition at age 63) sadly passed away just two days after he had taken these photo’s. His wife Patricia said that he had found bear whilst he was out walking their beloved Yorkshire terrier Molly. For the majority of their 41 years together, Patricia and Richard have had a history of ‘rescuing’ animals. After learning about the need for a rescue centre for birds, Richard and Patricia set up a “halfway house”. They would take in sick or elderly birds (usually budgies, parakeets or parrots), fund any necessary veterinary treatments themselves, and when well enough, they would drive the birds to a sanctuary in Lincolnshire. In one year, they rescued over 300 birds.
