ENTERTAINING READERS & WORKING HARD FOR OUR ADVERTISERS
Welcome
I
asked my kids the other day what ‘Blackberrying’ was and they both said, “it’s when you play on your Blackberry phone”. I did suspect that would be the answer. So having explained what real ‘Blackberrying’ is they agreed it could be fun – if fun is now defined as having your arms ripped apart by thorns and getting stung by a million nettles. Mmm, good point. Back to your phones kids. But for the more hardy amongst us, here is the Village Link’s top tips for an injury free Blackberry picking trip... 1. Be on the right side of the law. Ensure that you are not trespassing on anyone else’s land—the consequences for doing so can be severe. The laws surrounding foraging in the UK, however, are less equivocal. The Theft Act 1968 states: ‘a person who picks mushrooms growing wild on any land, or who picks flowers, fruit or foliage from a plant growing wild on any land, does not (although not in possession of the land) steal what he picks, unless he does it for reward or for sale or other commercial purpose.’ In other words, you’ll only get into trouble if you attempt to sell your berries on. But why on earth would you want to do that?! 2. This may seem glaringly obvious, but be aware of the area surrounding the berries before you pick them. Low-lying berries may have been exposed to dog or other wildlife’s urination. It’s always best to go for berries higher-up the bush. But don’t pick

them from too high—they’re for the birds. Also, be wary of blackberrying too close to an open road; the berries may have become contaminated with exhaust fumes. 3. Always keep your eyes peeled. Blackberries can crop up pretty much anywhere. Sometimes you’ll stumble upon a bumper crop; other times you’ll clap eyes on a lone shoot with two ripe berries just waiting to be tasted. So be vigilant! 4. Wear a long sleeve top so you don’t get your arms ripped to shreds! 5. Don’t wear shorts so you won’t get stung by a million nettles! Happy days! So, give it a try if you haven’t before, it’s free and fun and has the reward of a nice crumble... what’s not to love about a nice Blackberry crumble!!! Congratulations to Anna who found Bear, Elliot who discovered all the hidden Winston’s and finally to Mr Robinson who won the Carlisle History Book.

s Carlisle was on the west coast and not as susceptible to bombing during World War 2, valuable collections from art galleries at North and South Shields and Tynemouth were stored there. The Tullie House annual report commented “our topographical positon has saved us so far from the dislocation as well as the horrors of war”. Tullie House staff were affected. Evacuated children from Newcastle made use of library facilities and Newcastle Council paid half of the cost of a junior librarian. Use was made of the building by evacuees from Rutherford College and closing hours were altered to comply with blackout regulations because of glass roofs in Tullie House. There were exhibitions of war photographs in the entrance hall and galleries, public information films, lunchtime concerts and art exhibitions organised by CEMA (Council for the Encouragement of Music and Arts). Withdrawn books were supplied to army camps in the area and a class in Aircraft Maintenance was added to the Technical College syllabus. Several staff left to join the forces, including the Royal Marines

(John Miller), the Army (Robert Hogg), HM forces (Miss Muirhead), the AFS (Ernest Blezard) and the ATS (Miss Wallace). Various staff served as volunteers, Sidney Rigby (library) and Colin Rae (School of Art) becoming firewatchers. One member of staff, Herbert Smith, did not survive the war. He had joined the library in 1934 and in 1940 he joined the RAF, becoming a Sergeant Observer in Coastal Command. In November 1941 he was one of a crew of four intending to lay mines of St Nazaire, when they were shot down by flak. The plane ditched in the Bay of Biscay. The pilot and two crew were taken as POW’s. Sergeant Smith’s drowned body was found on the French coast and buried by locals. He was 26 years old. More information on the role Tullie House has played in the life of our city can be found in the book ‘Carlisle’s First Learning Centre: Tullie House’, available from my website www.p3 publications. com, Tullie House, and Bookends.

The Classic Banana Split
FOOD
Mouth-watering inspiration from food editor Jane Ferguson
E
veryone has been raving about the new Mamma Mia movie so I eventually went to see it, and can now understand why. It is such a feel good movie and as always, Abba’s music makes it a real winner. However, if we go back a few years to the 70’s, it was not considered cool to like Abba and I should know, because I was a teenager then. Personally, I loved their music but never admitted it to anyone as that would have made me one of the ‘uncool’ ones. OK, I was already uncool being a slightly plump red head with freckles, but I didn’t want to make it worse! I read somewhere recently that in their heyday Abba were reviled by the mainstream press and if you tried to make a case for taking them seriously you would probably be laughed out of the room. So I kid you not, if you admitted you liked Abba in the 70’s you kept it to yourself, which I did. I did draw the line at liking their outfits though, now those I did think were uncool. It’s hard for us now to believe how they were viewed, especially as their music has stood the test of time and they are more popular than ever. I know they are not to everyone’s taste but you have to admit that if an Abba
song comes on at a party, disco, wedding etc. everyone gets up to dance and I bet that includes those who claim to dislike them. You know who you are! So if you want to escape for a couple of hours go and see the new movie, and I bet it will make you feel good. Sticking with a 70’s theme it got me thinking what food we ate in the 70’s. Prawn Cocktail, Black Forest Gateau, Coq au Vin, Arctic Roll, Chicken Kiev spring to mind. However, the recipe I am going to try and revive is the humble, but delicious, Banana Split. This was always a favourite in our household, especially by my mum. In fact, it is something the kids can put together so it’s a win-win all round. To begin with you will need a narrow shallow dish. Slice one banana length ways and place a slice each side of the dish. In the middle add one scoop of chocolate,
one scoop of vanilla and one scoop of strawberry ice cream. Squirt over some chocolate and strawberry syrup. Whip some cream and top each ice cream mound with it (or use squirty cream). To finish sprinkle with some slightly roasted chopped nuts and top with three glace cherries. Boy, does this take me back to my youth? Enjoy!
PEARL OF WISDOM As crazy as it might seem, the banana split was created over 100 years ago! A 23-year-old apprentice pharmacist named David Evans Strickler came up with the idea of the banana-based triple ice cream sundae in 1904. The young Strickler, who enjoyed inventing sundaes, developed this tasty treat at Tassel Pharmacy in Latrobe, Pennsylvania at the pharmacy’s soda fountain. It wasn’t uncommon in those days for pharmacies to feature a soda fountain where customers could enjoy a soda or a frozen treat for a few cents!

PRUNING: THE DO’S AND DONT’S
W
local arborist Andrew Edgar, [orchard tree surgery and MAINTENANCE] shares his experience AND TIPS ON TREES AND SHRUBS
hen it comes to pruning, there are many techniques and tips that can help keep your trees healthy and happy.
Before
After
We are going to share with you some tips on pruning effectively and some of the tools you will need:
What are the benefits of pruning? Pruning helps maintain the size of trees. Trees that grow too large for their location can cause over-shading, possible damage to the surrounding objects and can end up with limbs getting overloaded and snapping. When you prune, you are able to remove any hazardous limbs, deadwood or any crossing branches that could cause trouble. Pruning will also allow light and air trough the tree which assists in keeping your tree healthy and strong.
Differences in pruning juvenile and mature trees When pruning a young tree you are essentially creating a blueprint for how you want them to form. Whereas when you prune a mature tree you are generally doing remedial works to their canopy or to reduce their size. Mature trees will already have their shape.
What tools do we use? On many of our sites, the basic equipment we would use to maintain a tree would be a hand saw and throw lines to which allows us to reach any difficult areas. For larger diameter cuts we would use a top handle chainsaw, and for those hard to reach places we would use a pole saw.

What tools do you need? If you are looking to prune your own trees, to allow more light into your garden for the summer, it is essential for your own health and safety that you only ever climb into a tree if you have the necessary qualifications.
If you want to gain access to the tree without climbing then use an A-Frame ladder for stability and a long reach pole saw. These two tools will help you reduce the tips of the tree.
The Do’s and Don’ts DO reduce the surface area of any cut: Any cut you make to the tree you want there to me as little surface area as possible so that it’s as difficult as possible for any pathogens or diseases to get into the trees system. DO keep the canopy balanced: If you reduce one side of the tree it is important to make sure the other side is reduced equally in order to keep an even load on the trunk. DON’T damage the main stem. Avoid cutting or putting any objects around the stem that will hinder its growth. So get that A-Frame ladder out and sharpen up that long reach pole saw. But if you decide you’d rather leave the work to someone else, then get a free quote from us.

ith funding from the Postcode Local Trust, the museum has been busy transforming its unused walled green space into a beautiful, accessible and safe inner-city garden which will support nature and be enjoyed by the local community, particularly those who have difficulty accessing outdoor spaces due to disability or personal circumstance. Local groups will be able to use the space to socialise, meet new people, gain skills, learn about nature and above all, have access to a space they can enjoy, feel at ease and be safe. The project has been led by community groups including Carlisle Key, Carlisle Mencap, The Conservation Volunteers, Making Space, Carlisle Young Carers, Cumbria Youth Offending Service and Creative Wellbeing art group. With themed sensory areas, plants, trees and habitats, beautiful murals and sculptures, the secret garden has something to benefit all members of the local community. The free lunchtime talks (1-2pm) held on the first Tuesday of each month go from strength to strength. In June, Mark Yielder, the recently retired Head of the Cumbria Police Dog Unit spoke about his experience
over 30 years in the force. In July, Robert Williams, Professor of Fine Art at the University of Cumbria, discussed the relationship between local industry and oral traditions in Cumbria. Then in August, John Anstey from the Devils Porridge Museum in Eastriggs told the remarkable story of the greatest munitions factory on earth built in 1915 on a 9 mile stretch of land between Longtown and Annan. All three events attracted large audiences from not only Carlisle but across Cumbria, Northumberland and the South of Scotland. The Autumn Programme beginning in September and running until December includes topics as diverse as The Border Reivers, The Tale of Driggsby the Whale, Art and the Changing Environment, and Has Society Lost Site of Childhood? roatia turned up on the UK’s tourism timeline remarkably late. In fact, it was only in the last years of the Nineties that the country started to find its feet in the tourism industry. Nowadays, more than 10 million people holiday here every year. Staring across at the Italian coast, Croatia is a hit with nature-seekers, sun-worshippers and city breakers. UNESCO World Heritage Sites dominate the skyline, while beaches entice you to the shore. The Dubrovnik region of Croatia stretches along the country’s south-east coast, sandwiched between Bosnia & Herzegovina to the east and the Adriatic Sea to the west. The region offers stunning waterfronts, unspoiled islands and a

getting around Croatia’s Adriatic coast. The views from this breathtaking town make superb postcard scenes, and historic churches provide a seriously striking backdrop. Make sure you stop by the Old Town for a peek into Cavtat’s past. Korcula island is ideal for families, thanks to its lively, medieval port town and handful of secluded beaches. Museums and markets add another option on top of lazing on the beach, while the eateries are abundantly stocked with local wine. Dubrovnik’s just a short ferry ride away, too! The country is an up and coming diving destination too. The shallow waters of the Istrian Riviera and Dalmatian Coast are ideal for beginners, while the deeper waters in the south offer more experienced divers the chance to explore coral reefs, caves and shipwrecks. Croatia’s peak season (Jul–Aug) is also its warmest. Its coast has a Mediterranean climate (warm summers and mild winters), while the inland climate causes hot summers and winter snow. Popular events include the Boat Show (Split, Apr); the Dance Week Festival (Zagreb, May–Jun); the indie-themed INmusic Festival (Zagreb, Jun); the longstanding Pula Film Festival (Jul); the Dubrovnik Summer Festival (Jul–Aug), with theatre, dance, and music shows; and the St. Martin’s Day wine harvest (wine regions, Nov).

• NO EFFORT • NO CUTTINGS • NO NOISE • NO FUSS NO NEED TO MISS THE SUNSHINE! Do robotic lawn mowers work? Yes, it’s lawncare simplified.
A great looking lawn can be a lot of hard work. With a robotic lawn mower, the grass gets mowed automatically - around the clock without your supervision. Cuttings are small enough that you won’t need to rake the clippings, adding valuable nutrients back to the soil - and there’s no need to empty any grass boxes. One way to prevent too many weeds is to frequently mow your grass. The Husqvarna Automower does just that as it mows your lawn every day. For more information on the Husqvarna range of automowers or to arrange a demonstration contact our Lawn and Gardens experts on the numbers below.

LOCAL BUSINESS
A new way of connecting you to local Dealers ellittrade.com is an exciting new car buying website which has just launched in Cumbria which will make a big difference to how you sell your car with very much a local focus. The idea is to put you in direct contact with the nearest local dealer by postcode followed by who is most interested in buying your car. You might want to sell your car, consider a trade in or simply release some cash. Usually you might decide to sell your car to one of the many car buying websites or search meticulously through dealers, who may or may not be interested in your car in order to find the best price. A typical buying website will often find faults with your car and offer you a reduced price. Subsequently, your car will usually be put into one of the many national auctions they are associated with – they buy your car cheaply from you and sell it for the highest price possible at auction. Paul Wasilkowski and Chris Smalley (both well established names in the Cumbrian car trade) who came up with the idea commented: “At sellittrade.com our network of dealers want your car for their forecourts and would be willing to offer a fair price, more importantly they could be just around the corner. The saying ‘keep it simple’ is a fitting description of both our company philosophy towards the car selling process and our easy to use new website. We have made it so that you simply enter your registration number along with the vehicle mileage. As a Company, we have the support of numerous local Independent dealers who are only too happy to buy your car at a fair price. Through us, they tailor their ‘car requirements’ so when you enter your car details the dealers that are interested in your car will be shown to you ordered by Postcode. You then simply press the ‘REQUEST’ button and enter your telephone/mobile number and they will be in contact with you to discuss viewing the car. You can then either arrange to visit them or they will come to you to view and complete the transaction. We charge neither admin fees or commission, you simply agree the purchase price as recommended with the dealer and providing your car is in an acceptable condition they will pay you prior to taking your car away. The process could not be any simpler. Our aim is to get you the best possible price with your convenience being our top priority.”
