T

Welcome

his year has been a huge challenge so far: Brexit shenanigans ensued, we nearly had WW3, Australia was on fire, the coronavirus pandemic shut down the world, racial tensions over police brutality in the US reached a breaking point and Village Link Magazine shut down in March. It’s been rough. With all the stress of the world at the moment, we have been encouraged to find a relaxing hobby, one which gives some calm amidst the storm, and even help with your mental wellbeing. You may have taken up gardening, growing vegetables or painting. I wish I had of. At the start of lockdown, EON installed an electricity smart meter to read our daily energy consumption, and ever since, I've been on a wattage warpath! It's literally taken over my life. This small sat-nav syle screen revealing how many kilowatts (ie: money!) is being used at any given minute, is driving me into a smart meter mortal combat. Who knew how much energy was being used to boil the kettle, to have the TV on standby .. don't get me started on electric toothbrushes. I feel it’s like a beat-the-clock game — can we spend less today than yesterday? And I’m disappointed it’s only me who has risen to the challenge. My kids think I'm suffering from some form of middle-aged mania, but they are draining the National Grid every day with phones, computers, hair straighteners, computers and TVs often left on 24 hours a day. As I'm typing this, with the warm flicker of candle light I'm very happy with my new obsession - I just wish the dishwasher would hurry up and finish! Congratulations to our previous issue winners – Mr Murphy for winning the 'Book Review' prize and little Archie, age 4, for finding all the hidden Winston's. We have suspended our popular 'Where's Bear' competition hopefully just for this issue, as we look to restrictions being lifted further. It's great to be back and we hope you and your families stay well.

HISTORY

CARLISLE’S PAST THE TULLIE HOUSE MURALS

V

isitors to the Tullie House function room today may wonder about the five murals adorning the walls. In 1931 a series of ten murals were prepared by students of the ‘School of Art’, based in Tullie House, for the Reference library. These are currently not on display.

However in March 1955, selected students of the re-named ‘College of Art’ were asked to execute large panels to replace the existing murals which had been there since 1932. The murals were to “depict the life of the community in and around Carlisle as it is today.” The first replacement panel was by William Cowper of “agricultural interests surrounding

the city”. Another seven panels followed between 1955 and 1961. Five of these eight murals are still on display in the Function Room, formerly the Reference Library. They are evidence of the quality of work carried out by art students at Tullie House around the time they moved out of Tullie House to the new ‘College of Art’ on Brampton Road.

The topics were:- 1. Cumbrian Farmyard *(1955) by William Simpson Cowper 2. Carlisle Brewery *(1956) by Max Shepherd. 3. Stead McAlpin & Company Ltd.* (1957) by Joan Weightman 4. Cumbrian Landscape (1957) by Donald Wilkinson 5. Carlisle Covered Market *(1961) by Margaret Harrison 6. Carlisle Station (1961*) by Raymond Higgs 7. Carlisle Market Place (1961) by Michael Mohamed 8. Workington Steelworks (1961) by Conrad Atkinson.

JANE’S KITCHEN

FOOD

Mouth-watering inspiration from food editor Jane Ferguson

I

think we can all safely say that the last few months have been life changing in many ways. For many of us it made us slow down and stop, giving us time to do the things that we have always wanted to do but never had the time for. Suddenly time was all we had. For example, I’ve heard of ones planting vegetable gardens, sewing, crafting, bike riding, painting and of course not forgetting the all important baking which appears to take top billing. How do I make this assumption? Because you could not buy flour for love nor money for weeks in the supermarkets. It seems that the whole country was baking which I thought was great. There is nothing like having freshly baked bread, cakes or biscuits and I really hope this trend keeps up. In all of this, however, we do not forget those keys workers who kept everything going during this time and to who we will be forever grateful. - The recipe I am going to share today I came across during lockdown while looking though some old notes. I used to make this when my children were small and it is a great one for kids to get involved with. It is called ‘Singin Hinny’ and stems from Northumberland. The story goes that they were a

quick snack for children, and as they cooked they sizzled (or sang). When they were nearly ready the mother would shout ‘they are singin hinny’ (hinny being a term of endearment for a child in Northumberland) meaning that they were nearly ready. How true this story is I do not know, but I like to think it is and I am going to stick with it. They are cooked on a griddle and the other good thing about this recipe is that they are sugarless. Rub 110g butter into 225g SR flour. Add 75g currants or raisins (I personally prefer currants) and then enough milk to bind together, approx 1 or 2 tablespoons. Roll out to about ½ inch thick and cut into rounds. Lightly

butter a griddle pan (or frying pan will do) and gently cook for 5 mins each side or until cooked through. Serve with butter and jam. Delicious. Jane ferguson THE GEORDIE EYE TEST

TRAVEL GUIDE

F

TRAVEL editor JANE SEDGWICK HELPS TO TAKE THE HASSLE OUT OF YOUR TRAVEL

irstly, my heart goes out to anyone who has been bereaved through this horrible illness. When this really took hold in early March, the speed at which COVID 19 raced from Asia across into Europe was just unbelievable. My main priority was for my clients who were overseas on holidays and business trips; I was in touch with every single one every day, until I knew they were home safely. I had to persuade one business client in Australia to come home early as I could see that if she didn’t, I couldn’t guarantee when I would be able to get her back. Having access to live flight systems here in my ‘office’ I held off a seat for her, while she decided what to do. Fortunately she listened to me, and returned on one of the last flights out of Melbourne to Dubai, then back to Newcastle. The financial implications of this global pandemic have just been phenomenal. If everyone wanted cash refunds, there would be no airlines, travel and tourism sector left. As it is, at least one well known company has collapsed and thousands of people have lost their jobs, or have been furloughed as companies try their best to manage their way through this storm. Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been very encouraged by the positive signs which are emerging. Since the restrictions have started to ease, and there is light

Check out my ‘Travel from Home’ zoom sessions over the coming months at the end of the tunnel, my inbox and my phone has been filled with new enquiries, rather than cancellations or rebookings, so things are on the up again. So what’s popular, what are people booking? Mainly self-catering holidays in England for starters, but I’ve also received enquiries for Disneyland Paris, and more exotic luxury destinations like the Maldives and safari in Tanzania. As of 4 July, pubs, restaurants and hotels in England can re-open. This also applies to self-catering cottages, lodges, glamping pods, campsites. Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland will be opening later in July. I’m just waiting for the FCO advice and quarantine laws to change in the next few weeks to allow some summer holidays to take place to popular European countries such as Italy, Portugal, Spain and France.

I’m running a series of ‘Travel from Home’ zoom sessions over the coming months. My first one last week was on safari holidays in Tanzania & Zanzibar, which was very well received. I’m planning to bring destinations and holiday types to the comfort of your own home, which you may not have considered. If you’d like to take part in these, please get in touch - my next one is on 7 July, and it will be Iceland. If you can’t wait to get away, whether that be to Cornwall for a cottage holiday, or you want something to look forward to for next year, or you have a special occasion coming up, give me a ring if you need some advice, or you want to talk about your future holiday plans. I’m across all the current FCO advice, I can tell you which countries are opening up, and can find accommodations for you that are adopting ‘safe practice’ due to the current situation. Why would you book on the internet? It might be cheaper, but it doesn’t give the personal caring service that I do, and it certainly doesn’t sort things out when they go wrong. Everything is tailored just for you. Please get in touch with me for any information or to book your next holiday. Socially distanced home visits or zoom calls possible.

The Naming of Plants

W

GARDENING

Happy gardening! WITH GARDEN EDITOR David Fletcher MCIHort

hilst I have been a gardener most of my life, both as a professional and an amateur, there are many people who perhaps through force of recent circumstances have discovered their gardens only now during the lockdown. In a way I am envious of the discoveries they are going to make, even the enjoyment that sometimes comes from trial and error. Growing plants is an adventure, though sometimes it can be frustrating when your prize plants are ravaged by every type of sap sucking insect, or your waking hours are spent picking up slugs and snails, and wonder whether it is morally right to stamp the slimy life out of them under your heel. One important aspect of learning about gardening is the naming of plants. At first the task of learning long Latin names seems onerous, and often gardeners can name the contents of their borders with a mixture of Latin and common names. Some plants it would seem are always known by their correct 'scientific' name, whilst others are invariably known by a variety of 'common' names. And here lies the problem. Common names it would seem are not common to everyone, and regional differences let alone the difference between countries can can cause confusion. As an

plants are named consists of two names: the first which is like our surname is the generic (genus), or group name. The second, the specific name (species) whilst it is only given to one plant of the same genus, like a christian name in a family, it can occur in many different genera. What I find more interesting, is the derivation and apprentice working for Leeds Parks meaning of plant names. Behind every plant name is a Department we were always taught history – it is often a mixture of Latin names, and this training has languages too as both Greek and remained very firmly with me. L

ove them or hate them, here in Cumbria trees are everywhere, from the most modern urban estates to the oldest country house. Living with them can be hard at times. They can block out the rise of the morning sun, give us the unending task of clearing up after them all autumn and we lie awake on long stormy nights waiting for yet another branch to crash through your greenhouse. But let’s remember what we love about them. The amazing varying shades of colour, the way in which they purify our air, the homes they provide for our wildlife and not forgetting the natural shields they form for our houses to keep out unwanted interest. As an Arborist (a tree surgeon to you and I) I’m regularly asked to remove a particular tree which is causing a problem. Many don’t necessarily want to ‘remove the tree’ but don’t feel they have much of a choice for instance, it may be blocking sun light, growing too close to bedroom windows or simply causing a headache (or more likely back ache) from picking up the mess it leaves (see what I did there). I try to explain there are ways in which we can manage our trees and perform mainte-

nance on them to reduce all of the problems associated with having a tree in your garden or grounds. On carrying out the maintenance work we find people are left feeling happy that the tree is still a feature of their garden but at the same time they have overcome a problem it has been creating. Shown to the right are pictures and terminology used for some of the regular tasks we perform. Have a look at the trees around you and see whether they could benefit from our services. What do you think? Hopefully you can see a way in which we can help you. Whether you are a homeowner, commercial organisation, Local Authority or agricultural business, we are able to assist you with your arboricultural needs. We are fully NPTC qualified in all aspects of Arboriculture and have 5million pounds of public indemnity cover.

Crown Thin

crown thin

Crown thinning is the removal of a percentage of the branch structure without changing the outline of the tree. Crown thins are usually conducted to allow more light to pass through tree but may also be conducted to reduce the sail area of vulnerable trees or to reduce water uptake. Heavier limbs may also be removed during this operation providing the form of the tree is not damaged or the tree is left in an unbalanced shape. It is also an opportunity to remove dead, dying, diseased, rubbing or crossing limbs.

Crown Lift

Crown lifting

Crown lifting is the removal of the lowest branches of the tree to give a uniform height above ground level. This practice reveals a clear stem which is often more pleasing to the eye. Common reasons for crown lifting are to bring more light under the tree and to give access to vehicles and pedestrians. Clearance for vehicles is 5.2 metres (17 feet), and for pedestrians 2.5m (8 feet).

Crown reduction is used to reduce the height and/or the spread of the crown of the tree. This is generally conducted for aesthetic reasons but may be carried out to remove dead wood, “stag horns”, at the top of a mature tree. crown thin

FELLWALKING ENTHUSIAST STEPHEN ROBSON REFLECTS ON A LABOUR OF LOVE WHICH TOOK FORTY YEARS TO ACHIEVE – COMPLETING ALL 214 WAINWRIGHT FELLS

T

here can’t be too many fellwalks that are aborted due to the fellside being on fire but that very circumstance occurred on Sunday 15th July 2018. We were driving towards Thirlmere from Keswick, fully intending to climb Raven Crag that towers high above the lake, when I noticed smoke rising from the trees below the summit. Many of them were well alight; the blaze was making its way down and across the crag. We consulted a fireman who was cordoning off the road. He left us in little doubt that the fell was out of bounds. On that occasion we opted for High Pike in the Northern fells instead. The first time I attempted Raven Crag in July 2013 I was thwarted by the presence of Peregrine falcons nesting there, the top was cordoned off. I was successful a month later. The fell is only 1520 feet tall but has a wonderful view. Blencathra to the North East, the Dodds and Helvellyn alongside and the reservoir directly below. The crag itself is vertical and very impressive up close. You don’t

Thirlmere was once two lakes, Leathes Water and Wythburn Water actually set foot on it but climb alongside it on the right hand side. It’s an easy ascent from the road beyond the dam at the North end of the lake. Thirlmere was once two lakes, Leathes water and Wythburn Water, joined by a little bridge in the narrow -waisted centre. A 104 foot tall dam was built at the top end in the Victorian era, raising the level by 56 feet, to supply water to Manchester 100 miles distant, carried in two large pipes and gravity fed, at a gentle gradient, all the way down. Two villages, Armboth and Wythburn, were submerged in the flooding of the valley. 50 million gallons have since flowed out, every day. It took four years to blast through the rock at the pass of Dunmail Raise, two teams mining towards each other. The so-called rock of names alongside the original Wythburn Water was blasted by the work-

men during this period to make way for the road and the initials of the Wordsworth’s, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and the Hutchinson’s, scratched on to celebrate their friendship, were destroyed. I have always considered Thirlmere a somewhat sinister lake but its appearance has improved over the years, the felling of many of the trees opening up the views along its Eastern shore. We returned after the fires in September. Fallen charred trees were everywhere. The path directly up from the dam was closed. We took a circuitous route up and down, there were plenty of obstacles still to be cleared. It was quite a tough proposition on what was once an easy ascent. This was a day of sunshine and showers. The first half of the walk was bone dry, the second half sodden wet. There is now a well-structured staircase to the summit with anti slip treads and chicken wire. The precipice itself is fenced off, a viewing platform seeming to imply “no further please!” The rain began, hesitantly at first then becoming more persistent. My jacket was waterproof but my trousers weren’t. The distance back to the car wasn’t far, but there was no way we could hurry, the gradients being too steep. You can either laugh these things off or be thoroughly miserable. When my trousers were plastered to my legs and my boxer shorts were soaked, I opted for the latter. The next day I went into town and invested in some waterproof breathable overtrousers. I have never had them on since, but they are ready, nestling in my rucksack, just in case. 25

Quality, bespoke dentures direct to the public

“I cannot praise highly enough the service I’ve received from Rob Taggart. I’m not new to dentures but this is the first time I’ve been treated by a Clinical Dental Technician who actually makes the dentures, rather than the Dentist. With Rob’s first-hand experience every part of the process was clearly explained, and all questions answered. Extra care was taken to ensure a perfect fit; correct shade and much careful thought given to cosmetic appearance. The whole experience was quick, efficient and very friendly and after only 10 days I’ve had no discomfort whatsoever and can eat anything.I’d happily recommend Rob Taggart’s Dental Services to anyone needing New Dentures.” JOANNA M
