Welcome

uring our early childhoods, we’ve picked up most of our day-to-day habits and even some weird things from our parents, learning to adapt to the world by observing and mimicking our surroundings. Most of the time, those routine practices are universal, so it’s small wonder that people just assume them to be normal and expect everyone to be on the same page. However, there are times when your world suddenly collapses as you realize you’re the only person in the room to call the remote control a ‘flicker’ or that you were the only crazy kid in the world to eat bananas whole, skin and all. On long road trips, my parents would tell us kids that if we closed our eyes, we’d get there faster. Believing them, we would close our eyes and eventually fall alseep. Incredibly, when we woke up we were almost there, and parents got a nice quiet drive with no kids fighting! Well played parents. Well played. How about you? Did you have any weird stories from your childhood, or realisations that you’d been lied to by the people you trusted the most? We’d love to hear them. Big congrats to Ruby who found Bear in Cumwhinton, and to James who found all the Winston’s. Thank you as always for all your entries, phone calls and support. It means a lot. Keep safe out there.

HISTORY

CARLISLE’S PAST

T

When Electric Light came to Tullie House - leading to a fatality

he Tullie House Committee gifted the house and contents to the City Corporation on 11 August 1890 (City Minutes). Plans for extensions were advanced by 1891 but there was a wish to open “as soon as possible” and a temporary reading room was opened, which proved very popular. On 20 November 1891 the Carlisle Journal reported on the physical changes being made and published a plan for the building adding, “preparation has been made for lighting the whole building by electricity, if that mode of illumination should eventually be decided upon in preference to gas.” The Council chose electricity (very new at the time) and two years later (10 November 1893) it was reported, “the buildings are lighted by electricity. The engines, dynamos, and other plant are placed in the basement

1891 ground floor plan Tullie House

of the northwestern wing of the building [under the Museum] and are under the charge of Mr Tom Duckworth. Two Tangye horizontal 16 horsepower gas engines powered two dynamos. Extra heavy flywheels, each weighing 22 cwt, were used to ensure steady running and to prevent any fluctuation of the lights. The output was to drive up to 419 Edison-Swan type lamps, from 8 to 16 candle power each. The introduction of electricity unfortunately led to a fatality. On 13 March 1894 the Carlisle Journal reported “the accident to Mr Tom Duckworth at Tullie House on the

evening of Monday week terminated fatally in the Infirmary on Saturday evening. Mr Duckworth, in charge of the machinery generating the electric light for the Reading Room and School of Art, was cleaning the oil from a revolving drum with a piece of cotton waste. His left arm was accidentally caught between the belt and the drum. In an instant he was thrown violently to the ground by the rapidly revolving machine. His left arm was mangled, and his skull fractured. He was removed to the Infirmary, where his injured arm was amputated, but the fracture to the skull was serious. He expired on Saturday evening, leaving a widow and two children.” With the introduction of mains electricity in 1900 there was no further need for the turbines and the cellar was used for other purposes. Much more about Tullie House and it’s past is described in the book “Carlisle’s First Learning, Tullie House,” available from my website: p3publications.com, Tullie House & Bookends.

Judith Cook, an Oldam-born entertainer now living in Carlisle, has released her book ‘My Doors of Destiny’ which highlights her struggles with mental health and menopause. It tells of her life struggles both professionally and personally. She says “I have loved, lost, hurt, healed and I am still learning lots about this special journey called ‘life’. It is full of ups, downs, gains and losses, hurt and pain but overall, the joy of surviving. The purpose for me writing this book, was not only a part of my survival from mental health and menopause - as well as the dreaded Covid hitting the world and putting us in lockdown; I hope this book can help at least just one person. I have tried to include supporting resources, in which helped me get to where I am today”. Judith is supporting many charities and organisations who helped her survive. Year-end tax planning for individuals

N

ow is a good time to consider basic tax planning arrangements in order to reduce the overall tax burden for you and your family for the current tax year and to put arrangements in place that will reduce your potential income tax and capital gains tax liabilities in future years. Income Tax Planning • If you are a higher rate or additional rate taxpayer, consider taking action to reduce taxable income, particularly where income falls just above one of the thresholds. There are various options to achieve this, including pension contributions, gift aid donations to charity or investments in EIS, SEIS or VCT schemes. • If you have children, it may be possible to switch income from one spouse to another, so that both spouses’ incomes remain below the £50,000 threshold for High Income Child Benefit Charge. • If possible, bring forward the payment of dividend income ahead of the increase by 1.25% on 6 April 2022 to benefit from

the lower rates of taxation applicable in the 2021-22 tax year. Married couples and civil partnerships should consider whether income generating assets are owned in the most tax efficient manner. It may benefit to pass assets to the other spouse to maximise the tax bands and allowances, this could include interest, dividends, rental income and partnership income. Consider whether the married couples allowance or blind persons allowance should be transferred if one spouse does not have sufficient income to claim the allowance. If you are an employee working from home claim the use of home as office and other expenses, not reimbursed by your employer such as professional fees and subscriptions, business travel, work uniforms etc. This can be done on the HMRC website or by calling HMRC. Ensure you use your ISA allowance of £20,000 and get tax free income and growth on your savings or investments.

Capital Gains Tax Planning • The annual exemption cannot be carried forward or transferred, so aim to make disposals before 6 April 2022 to utilise this year’s exemption. • Consider transferring assets to or from your spouse or civil partner, to utilise their annual exemption, basic rate band or capital losses. Such transfers must be made outright and without preconditions to be effective for tax purposes. • The timing of a disposal may affect the amount of CGT payable. For example, if you are a basic rate taxpayer in 2021-22 but expect to be a higher rate taxpayer in 2022-23, realising a disposal in 2021-22 so that some or all of the resulting gain falls within the basic rate band will reduce the amount of CGT payable (albeit with a one-year acceleration of the tax payment). • If you’ve already made chargeable gains in the year, review any other assets you have to see if losses can be crystallised or if any negligible loss claims can be made.

We can help with tax planning and any questions you may have. Why not call and ask to speak to one of the tax team. Pauline Jackson Tax Partner

THE GARDEN IN LITERATURE

M

Happy gardening! WITH GARDEN EDITOR David Fletcher MCIHort

y last article focused on great gardening books. As the weather continues to be a little cheerless, I thought I might continue the literary theme by looking at how the ‘garden’ itself has featured historically in the novel. My shelves are full of not only practical guides to gardening, but lots of other things too: biographies, topography, history etc, but also novels. And of the novels I have read, reread, lost, and borrowed it is remarkable just how many feature the garden as something intrinsically valuable. In historical terms the garden is often something of beauty; something mysterious. More often than not it has deeply romantic or even tragic connotations. I must admit to liking Dickens, and having read most if not all his novels, the garden would seem to play quite an important role. Writing as he did during the Victorian period, gardens were something many aspired to own. Gardening as a pastime became popular, and the creation of beautiful gardens inspired by the past grew. Dickens himself was very interested in gardens and gardening and suggested that England itself was ‘the one great garden’. I am not sure if he was much of a gardener himself, but certainly owned one at Gads Hill Place. There are numerous refer-

Gad’s Hill Place, the home of Charles Dickens

ences to gardens, and horticulture such as in Hard Times where even flowers are seen very much as an escape. The character Sissy Jupe who lives in an industrial ‘wilderness of smoke and brick’ loves to be amongst flowers (albeit ones merely seen in the fabric of a carpet). Escape to a garden also for David Copperfield who runs away from the awful conditions of factory life and finds himself in a beautiful oasis. Other examples include the notion of greenspace, if not actually a garden a place to escape the courtroom for Miss Flite in Bleak House. In other literature, Lewis Caroll, in his sequel to Alice in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, sees Alice climbing through a mirror and into Wonderland. Alice enters a magical (though slightly disturbing) garden of talking flowers. In a more romantic frame Jane (of Jane Eyre) is to be found in the grounds of Thornfield Hall, where Rochester reveals to her his true feelings and they become engaged. The setting by a grand Chestnut

tree, becomes a metaphor for stormy times ahead when it is later struck by lightening and splits in two. Interestingly gardens represent both an oasis to escape to, and a means to tame nature. Somehow though there is a realisation that nature isn’t quite so easily tamed, and that she has a power outside of our reach and understanding. There is often a mystery attached to the garden. In perhaps the most famous of all works centred around a garden, the classic children’s novel The Secret Garden, the garden becomes a means to rejuvenate the life of a young girl. The garden continues to this day to play an important role in literature. I remember reading Phillip Pullmans His Dark Materials and being struck by how significant the the garden is in the conclusion to his fantastical trilogy. In a dramatic end the characters Will and Lyra separated by parallel worlds to avoid the destruction of humanity, take an hour each Midsummers Day to sit together on a bench in Oxford Botanical Gardens. As I write this the wind is blowing yet again, the snowdrops and hellebores are blooming and soon readers it will be time to start gardening in earnest. Drama or no drama our gardens will require our practical and dedicated attention. As always Happy Gardening!

My favourite teacher at school was Mrs Turtle. Strange name, but she tortoise well.

Quality, bespoke dentures direct to the public

“I cannot praise highly enough the service I’ve received from Rob Taggart. I’m not new to dentures but this is the first time I’ve been treated by a Clinical Dental Technician who actually makes the dentures, rather than the Dentist. With Rob’s first-hand experience every part of the process was clearly explained, and all questions answered. Extra care was taken to ensure a perfect fit; correct shade and much careful thought given to cosmetic appearance. The whole experience was quick, efficient and very friendly and after only 10 days I’ve had no discomfort whatsoever and can eat anything.I’d happily recommend Rob Taggart’s Dental Services to anyone needing New Dentures.” JOANNA M

ees are critical to life on this planet. Did you know they are responsible for over 100 different types of food that we eat? Without them our diet would be nothing like it is today. Due to various factors such as pesticides, changing weather patterns and loss of habitat, honeybees continue to decline each year. Their decline has been obvious for many years now and whilst it’s hard to help tackle the fundamental causes of the decline on an individual level, we can think about how our own mini habitats affect the natural world around us. As Bees become more and more endangered, it’s even more important that we do what we can personally. One way to help combat this decline, is to create an environment conducive to help bees find the nectar they need – by planting a garden full of bee friendly shrubs. We’ve compiled a list of plants that you can easily find at local garden centres across the UK, this selection are beautiful attractive flowering shrubs, that will provide the nectar and pollen bees desperately need.
