F

Welcome

or millions of stressed out parents, lockdown was hitting them hard enough without being forced to balance working from home with looking after their children - turning homes into classrooms. Most parents on their 'first day of homeschooling' opted for an inset day for staff training!! I know I expelled the kids on day one and said I was taking early retirement. The struggle was enough to prompt one father who has been attempting homeschooling to tweet: “Been homeschooling the kids since 9am. It's 9.08am and I'm starting to think teachers should all earn about £500,000 a year". You may have been busy posting photos of 'parenting wins' on Instagram (look at our back garden tent, recreating a Renaissance painting with our child, our dog and a packet of custard creams) but we all know that wasn't the true story. Let's face it - there was no escape! No gym sessions, no drinks with friends. Couldn't even have a bit of time on our phones while “watching” the kids at swimming lessons. One mothers homeschooling schedule read: 9am 'Home Economics' - how to make me a coffee. 10am 'Mechanical Engineering' - How to assemble and operate the hoover. 11am 'PE' - run outside and put the rubbish and recycling out. 1pm 'Chemistry' - How to bleach the loo. 2pm 'Geography' - Which part of the bedroom do things flung on the floor live? 3pm 'Science' - How fairy liquid removes grease from pans. 5pm 'Afterschool Club' - Go to your room with your iPad and be quiet! Congratulations to Mrs Gibson for winning the 'Victoria Crosses' book - we had an unprecedented number of entries so thank you to everyone who entered. Also, congratulations to 3 year old Oscar who found all the Winston’s hidden in the last issue. Thanks everyone, I hope you enjoy this next issue, stay safe and stay well!

CARLISLE’S PAST

HISTORY

SILLOTH & RAILWAYS

T

he railway from Carlisle arrived at Silloth in 1856. Three years later the docks opened. Edwardian railways are often portrayed as a dream world of Railway children and country stations. As far as the local people were concerned they were more of a nightmare. The services were run by three separate companies with no co-ordination between them. In 1919 the Maryport and Carlisle railway offered its passengers a ‘Special’ weekend return to Silloth which involved using all three companies. On Fridays and Saturdays only,

Silloth Station

trippers could leave Wigton at 1.30 pm. They then had to wait 45 minutes at Brayton (see the map) for the 2.27 pm ‘Special’ operated by the Caledonian Railway to Abbeytown junction. Here they had to change again for a North British train arriving in Silloth at 2.57 pm. The journey had taken 1.5 hours to cover a distance of 9 miles as the crow flies. The main problem was on Monday morning when there was no Special. They had to catch the 8.00 am from Silloth which, with two changes got them home at 9.20am (a bit late for work). If they missed that train the next one at 10.55am had no connections and they would arrive home at 3.25pm in the afternoon!. The North British Railway, which operated the line from Carlisle to Silloth, seemed to have lost interest in the branch after the Settle–Carlisle Railway opened in 1876. By 1910 there were only four

trains on weekdays in each direction. On Thursdays and Saturdays there was an extra ‘express’ service, but this took 45 minutes to cover the 221/2 miles of track. Bromfield Station was noted for its magnificent floral displays: the staff had plenty of time to tend them as there were only three trains a day in each direction.

Mouth-watering inspiration from food editor Jane Ferguson

uring lockdown and having more time, I decided to make my own bread. As there is only my husband and I left at home now, I have continued with this and make one loaf a week which sees us through. How long this will last only time will tell. I also tried making sour dough bread, although I have to admit that didn’t last. I love the idea of sour dough bread in the fact that it doesn’t have yeast in it, but instead you use what is called a ‘starter’. Hassle free Pet Supplies bringing pet care supplies straight to your door with free nutritional expertise and behavioural advice

W

elcome to OSCAR Pet Foods Carlisle – a national brand serving your local community with hassle-free delivery of quality pet supplies (including dog food, cat food and pet accessories) straight to your door. I’m Stuart Edgar, and many of you will know me, my partner, Jane, and our adorable black Labrador, Sansa! I’m Carlisle born and bred and have worked in Carlisle and the surrounding area for the past 35 years, moving to Wetheral just five years ago. It’s a community I have grown to love, and I can’t wait to serve local pet-owning families with a quality pet care service they can depend upon. As I start my new venture, Jane will be giving me valuable support at home and I’m certain

8

Sansa will try her best to ‘quality check’ every delicious flavour of dog food, every tasty treat and every exciting toy! Blessed with a character to match her namesake, from Game of Thrones, we’re hoping her discerning attitude, yet loyal and family-loving personality, will come in handy! In fact, Sansa was instrumental in helping us choose OSCAR. We wouldn’t have called her a fussy eater, but she certainly wasn’t ‘Labrador’ when it came to mealtimes. That was … until we popped a sample of OSCAR Lamb and Rice in front of her. Now, she doesn’t get her head out of the bowl until she’s finished – and that’s the honest truth. Whilst my thirty-year background in sales taught me the importance of recognizing a quality product, finding a work

life balance to help me connect and support my local community was going to need more than Sansa’s nose! Choosing OSCAR turned out to be easy because I was struck by the company’s honesty. From my very first enquiry I received nothing but truthful and sincere support from its amazing head office team, which meant I immediately knew it was a brand I could get behind and feel comfortable with. The valuable resources of a nationwide brand mean I can keep my customers supported and supplied with a level of service that earns trust and loyalty. Please keep your eyes peeled for our super-smart OSCAR van and don’t forget to give us a wave as we begin our pet deliveries throughout Carlisle and the surrounding area.

Inheritance Tax

the first in a series of bite size articles brought to you by the tax specialists at Saint & Co.

ur aim over the next few editions is to guide you through the complex rules surrounding inheritance tax including who pays it, how it is calculated, when it is payable and the tax planning opportunities involved. We’ll break it all down so it’s easy to understand and digest. When we first meet with a client, our starting point is to consider what assets will form part of their estate. This in itself can be confusing. People are often under the misapprehension that there will be no inheritance tax liability when assets are left to the family. This may well be the case where assets are left to a spouse, but not necessarily so if left to other family members. Let’s start by looking at what makes up the assets in your estate. Your estate is made up of your worldwide assets less any liabilities, for example, loans or mortgages. This means the following would be included: • bank and building society accounts • household and personal goods, pensions, • life assurances and annuities

Our starting point is to consider what assets will form part of their estate • stocks & shares, assets in trust • overseas assets You should remember that any ISAs or other investments which are not reportable for income tax are still liable to inheritance tax. Whilst overseas property and investments are liable to inheritance tax in the UK, they may also be liable to death taxes in the country where the assets are situated. It is therefore essential that you take tax and legal advice in that country as well as here. In addition to your assets, consideration has to be given at the date of death to any gifts you have made in the 7 years prior to the date of death.

Such gifts are known as potentially exempt transfers or PETS. If you do not survive 7 years from the date of gift, then it will form part of the assets in your estate liable to inheritance tax. People often misunderstand how the rules work if they do not survive the 7 years as they expect that the value of the gift will be tapered to reduce the amount which would be liable to tax. However, this is incorrect. The full value of the gift is included in the estate. The nil rate band available would be offset first against any PETs with the balance against the remainder of the estate. If a significant gift has been made which is greater than the nil rate band, then any resulting tax liability would be reduced by the taper relief available. However, if the gift was less than the nil rate band then there would be no inheritance tax payable on the gift and therefore no taper relief would apply. The inheritance tax form your executors are required to complete and submit to HM Revenue & Customs can include up to 20 separate schedules to report your assets, liabilities and make any relief claims. We will look at some of these reliefs next time.

Arnhem 1944 THE HUMAN TRAGEDY OF THE BRIDGE TOO FAR AUTHOR: DILIP SARKAR MBE • An analysis of fatalities in the battle for the bridge at Arnhem • Detailed biographical sketches of men killed from units involved • Includes Polish and RAF casualties, detailing the part played by these forces during Operation Market-Garden • Unique interviews with families of the deceased • Includes details of German casualties

The airborne battle for the bridges across the Rhine at Arnhem ranks amongst the Second World War’s most famous actions – inspiring innumerable books and the star-studded 1977 movie. This book, however, is unique: deeply moved, the author provides a fresh narrative and approach – concentrating on the tragic stories of individual casualties. So, let us return to the fateful autumn of 1944, and meet those fighting in the skies, on the landing grounds, in the streets and woods of Oosterbeek, and on the ‘bridge too far’ at Arnhem. TRAVEL GUIDE

I

T R AV E L

TRAVEL editor JANE SEDGWICK HELPS TO TAKE THE HASSLE OUT OF YOUR TRAVEL

’ve spent the past few days in Corfu. It had to be done. I just wanted to get back on a plane again and feedback to anyone who is interested what the whole experience is like. I also needed some downtime to recharge my batteries. Three days of warm temperatures, cloudless skies, and time spent on the beautiful island of Corfu where every view is just stunning. I even made it up to see the sunrise on my final morning. I was apprehensive about going, but as soon as I landed in Corfu airport, and stepped out into the warmth of the evening, I knew I had done the right thing. For me, there's nothing like the sensation of arriving somewhere new; the smells, sounds of the cicadas, the heat and fabulous sunsets and sunrises over the sea. That's why I work in travel - sadly I haven't added to my tally of countries visited, I've been to Greece before, but it was a new island for me. Earlier in the week I had completed my online Passenger Locator Form for entry into Greece. You are then emailed a QR code the evening before travel which you can have either on your device, or print as a Pdf. I flew from Newcastle with Easyjet. I've never seen an airport so quiet. Car parks, check in area, and once through into departures, hardly any one

As soon as I landed in Corfu airport, and stepped out into the warmth of the evening, I knew I had done the right thing around. You have to wait until departures to get refreshments, but a lot of the shops are closed. Duty free is open. Going through security was a doddle. Masks are worn by everyone at all times except when having food and drink. Plenty of hand sanitizer stations everywhere, and social distancing observed. Wearing a mask on the flight was not as bad as I thought, and the 3.5 hours flight to Corfu passed quickly. Easyjet provided a limited food and drink service if you wanted. The arrival at Corfu airport went really smoothly, our Passenger Locator Forms were checked, and it took moments for the luggage to arrive. I collected my hire car, took a couple of wrong turns, but got to my hotel within 40 minutes. I stayed in a very nice 3* superior hotel in Ypsos, which had a beautiful outdoor pool area surrounded by gardens and a spectacular view over the sea. I also visited some of the island’s best 5* hotels, Domes Miramare, MarBella Corfu hotel and the Kontokali Bay Resort & Spa.

All hotels have various Covid protocols in place, some take your temperature on arrival, and depending on where you stay, breakfast may be brought to your table, or if it is a buffet, it may be table service. Tables need to be booked in advance if you are having meals in your hotel. Some activities are limited, but in the main, once you're by the pool, or on the beach, things are normal. All staff wear visors or facemasks, and you're asked to wear yours in corridors, lifts and anywhere else where you might be in close proximity to others. I spent one day exploring, I took my small Citroen C1 (no power going up hills) along a beautiful coastal route north to the harbour village of Kassiopi. Such stunning views everywhere – I bought some fruit from an elderly Corfiot who was just trying to make a living. It felt wonderfully normal. It was lovely just to sit in a taverna in the evening and watch the world go by. I also had some downtime. Please get in touch with me for any information or to book your next holiday. Socially distanced home visits or zoom calls possible. I take the hassle out of your travel, and help you have your moments that matter.

GARDENING

Health Benefits of Gardening

I

Happy gardening! WITH GARDEN EDITOR David Fletcher MCIHort

read the other day that one of the largest studies ever conducted on gardening, which was funded by Innovate UK and the National Institute for Health Research, had concluded that 'people who spent time in the garden report better physical and mental health levels than those who do not'. Not a surprise I thought! Without knowing every detail of the study, I along with all of you who have spent time in our gardens know just how therapeutic pottering about in them is. Growing plants, or just admiring them in all their forms transports us (albeit briefly) away from the concerns and stresses of modern life. Many years ago when I first started out on my horticultural career (late 1970s) relatively little was spoken or acknowledged of the health benefits of gardening, at least in municipal park circles! And yet historical evidence exists that 14th Century Irish Monks treated 'troubled fellows' with gardening activities, and during the Victorian period hospitals (more often asylums) thought that gardening or agricultural work was good for their patients. In the 1990s I first worked in Horticultural Therapy helping

Fourteenth Century Irish Monks treated 'troubled fellows' with gardening activities adults with moderate to severe learning difficulties to discover the wonderful world of gardening, growing vegetables on a small organic farm in Yorkshire. It has never failed to impress me just how much everyone got out of the days spent weeding between rows of carrots or cabbages, or learning to prick out seedlings – certainly days spent outside in the fresh air was a relief from being cooped up in Day Centres, and Social Services at that time realised how much happier their clients were on the days spent with us! Soon a handful of clients grew and grew and I am happy to report that that small organic

farm near York has burgeoned into a major horticultural charity full of plants for sale and smiling faces. Even in the most challenging of circumstances horticulture continues to provide health benefits to those returning from wars, or those with harrowing personal stories to relate. I worked briefly helping the long term unemployed on a city farm in South London teaching City and Guilds Horticulture. All those I taught had suffered from the effects of long periods without work, or a proper place to live. All without exception found the City Farm beneficial, and I hope it helped them grow in confidence. It really doesn’t matter the scale on which we garden, or whether we consider ourselves gardeners at all, the more time spent admiring, cultivating, or perhaps talking to plants (I'm not one for that myself, though if you do it may help, I just haven't tried it), the better. Apart from the obvious benefits of physical activity, the calming effects of gardening seem obvious too. I literally had to smile the other day on finding on my bookshelves the other day a book entitled 'The Happy Gardener' by my namesake H. L. V. Fletcher, and dedicated to none other than David Fletcher! Happy gardening!

It turns out my front lawn is chicken proof. It's impeccable

Cumbria has a new old mill!

The lockdown has created a scramble for the essentials of life, the most basic being bread and the flour kneaded by hand to make it fresh at home. While supermarket shelves emptied, this ancient cornmill at Warwick Bridge has come back to life to feed the community. The handover of the ‘key’ by charity owner Cultura Trust, leasing the mill to the Community Benefit Society, Warwick Bridge Corn Mill Limited, can now unlock the mill’s full potential. If you’d walked past the site in 1170, 850 years ago, you could ra Trust; probably have dropped off your sack of grain and returned for your bag of flour. Ever since, someone has been milling on Director, Cultu, Chair ll Be am ah aly L-R Gr this site. Now your flour is made in a mill that is pretty much as it was when rebuilt in 1845. This is food with a story. Mille; Phil He Karen Mason, aham Brooks, WBCM Ltd The unusual lease, prepared by Cultura’s lawyers Sintons LLP, marks the threshold between 20 years of the trust’s WBCM Ltd, Gr determination to save this piece of living history and passing it into the hands of the community to run. Community share issues are still rare, and often are to save a pub or something under threat of closure; here, right from the start, the community will be living, breathing, baking and eating the fresh straight-out-of-the-oven results of their efforts. The lease and shares together provide the security for the community to invest, to convert a vision into edible benefits. Twenty years ago, Graham Bell, Director of Cultura Trust, could see (if not yet smell) that vision of what treats lay ahead: ‘we looked at options including creating a microbrewery, which then were rare, but really, this mill has flour dust engrained in its walls and floorboards – we couldn’t ignore that call to revive the life it was made for.’ Nurturing it back into life has not come cheap. £2m has been spent buying and carefully restoring the building and machinery, thanks to a lifesaving grant of £1.34m from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, unlocking other funding from Historic England, the RDPE LEADER fund and a range of others including the Headley Trust – one of the Sainsbury family trusts, which is a welcome connection with the food industry. Not only a key was handed over upon the signing of the lease, but also the miller! The miller is a young lady with a passion for making mills work, fostered as a volunteer at Heron Mill 10 miles south of Kendal. Karen Mason now shares her livelihood with this mill: ‘when the mill is busy, it purrs – you don’t just hear it but feel it, taming the raw power of gushing water into the steady flow of warm flour.’ Neighbour Phil Healy watched the mill sit idle, then saw the work on site turning the huge wheel again, and believed in the vision – so much so he became the founding chairman of Warwick Bridge Corn Mill Limited: ‘receiving the sluice-gate key as a symbol of the lease is in character with this wonderful, powerful, longstanding “member of our community” that we’ll be taking care of. Every one of over 200 people who have bought shares feel strongly about this mill – their mill, their neighbour, their investment.’ www.warwickbridgecornmill.co.uk Excellent value for money with high exposure

Quality, bespoke dentures direct to the public

“I cannot praise highly enough the service I’ve received from Rob Taggart. I’m not new to dentures but this is the first time I’ve been treated by a Clinical Dental Technician who actually makes the dentures, rather than the Dentist. With Rob’s first-hand experience every part of the process was clearly explained, and all questions answered. Extra care was taken to ensure a perfect fit; correct shade and much careful thought given to cosmetic appearance. The whole experience was quick, efficient and very friendly and after only 10 days I’ve had no discomfort whatsoever and can eat anything.I’d happily recommend Rob Taggart’s Dental Services to anyone needing New Dentures.” JOANNA M

any trees and shrubs have very attractive bark. In the depths of winter, plants and trees with strikingly coloured bark come into their own with colours such as bright whites, yellows, pinks, warm red-browns light up an otherwise gloomy garden. Winter interest provided by bark on trees and shrubs is an important aspect of planting up a garden, and is sometimes overlooked in favour of more colourful flower interest. A few of the brightest and best are Cornus (Dogwood), Rubus and Salix (Willow). These need pruning each year, almost to ground level in March, to make sure that a fresh crop of the brightest-coloured stems are produced for the next winter. This pruning technique is known as coppicing, and is very easy – simply cut back all stems to within 5-7.5cm (2-2½in) from the ground, or to the previous year’s stubs. Sometimes when a large tree is coppiced suddenly, it can take two seasons to come back into growth, so don’t worry if it seems to take a while to shoot.

Coppicing is very easy – simply cut back all stems to 2-2½in from the ground Pollarding is another method of pruning that keeps trees and shrubs smaller than they would naturally grow. This pruning technique is suitable for Willow, Eucalyptus and other species grown as small trees, and is another way of ensuring the brightest stem colour on new growth. It is normally started once a tree or shrub reaches a certain

height, and annual pollarding will restrict the plant to that height. Pollarding is used for many reasons, including stopping trees and shrubs outgrowing their allotted space, reducing the shade cast by a tree and often on street trees it’s used to stop electric wires and streetlights being obstructed. Pollarding a tree is usually done annually, and would need to be carried out every few years to avoid potential problems. Once young trees or shrubs have reached the desired height, you can begin to pollard them. This involves choosing a framework which for a shrub, this might be one stem cut to a metre high – a mass of stems will grow from the top. With a tree, it is more typical to leave a trunk supporting three or five branches – these branches are cut back to a desirable length and the twiggy growth appears at these ends. Initially, the new branches are held weakly in place as they grow rapidly from underneath the bark, rather than from within the tree. As the wood lays down annual growth rings, the union strengthens, often forming a thickened base where the shoot meets the trunk. Over a number of years, a swollen ‘pollard head’ forms where new shoots grow each year. Trees with weaker wood prone to producing multiple shoots, such as Poplar and Willow can become hazardous. Some of the weakly-attached branches can break off and fall to the ground. Ideally, try to return to a frequent cutting cycle and give us a call to carry out a safety check regularly. 29
