I
Welcome
’ve learned a lot of things over the last 12 months – haven’t we all? I wash my hands ten times a day. Until they look like prunes. I stay out of crowded places. I’ve learned all sorts of ways to avoid touching people – elbow bumps, mimed handshakes and the like, and of course, the face mask. When this all started, face masks were harder to find than an honest car dealer [wait a minute, I was a car.., never mind]. Today, over 12 months after the Covid emergency began – face masks are the hottest fashion accessory on the market. Some of the world’s top designers are creating them in outrageous designs. And at ridiculous prices – £500 or more! You can get them with designer logos and high-fashion fabrics. I went to Costa Coffee recently and saw the barista was wearing a fashionable thing with sequins across the top. “That’s a nice mask,” I said. “Is it surgical?” “No,” she replied “It’s a cough-ee filter!!!”. My doctor joked that I should always wear a mask inside my home – to avoid being over 30 stone by the time the pandemic is over. I really like masks with messages on. There’s one that says: I’M NOT YELLING – I’m Italian! Another says: If you’re reading this, you’re too close. And, did you know ‘Mask Mouth’ is actually a thing!? Really, I hear you say? According to the Colgate website, ‘mask mouth describes the variety of oral side effects from wearing a mask for an extended time’…urrgghh. ‘Mask mouth might include, dry mouth, bad breath, tooth decay and even gum disease’…can you imagine the state of the mask?? Sadly it seems masks are here for a while yet, so I think for the foreseeable, its minty freshness all the way! Thank you to everyone who got in touch through social media, phone or email with your kind words as we continue to celebrate being in business for over ten years! Congratulations to Maddison who found Bear and to Sophie who found all the Winston’s in the last issue.

HISTORY
CARLISLE SUBSCRIPTION LIBRARY Devonshire Street building wanted to sell. The committee looked at alternative sites but in December 1895 it was agreed that they would transfer to Tullie House under the following terms: The Tullie House Committee was, “to discharge the debt of the Library Company, about £123, and provide for the subscribers a separate room at Tullie House, Miss Waite being retained as librarian at £34 per year. The arrangement is for five years and is to be continued if the total number of subscribing members be not less than eighty.”
Library with Gothic facade on Devonshire Street
T
he Subscription Library, established on 24 November 1768, was intended for ladies and gentlemen who could afford the annual fee. From inception the library was on Castle Street, but it may have moved around as they usually leased their premises for seven years, eventually ending up next to the Crown and Mitre Hotel. Books were lent and magazines could be consulted on the premises. There was a separate Commercial Newsroom and meetings were held in the late 1820’s to bring the two institutions together in one building to be built opposite the ‘Bush’ by subscription.
Two plans were considered, one of Grecian style and the other Gothic. Gothic prevailed and Thomas Rickman’s plans were chosen, the foundation stone being laid on the 29 May 1830. The drawing by W H Nutter shows this fine building on the corner of Devonshire Street shortly after opening. The Importance of Trees LOCAL ARBORIST ANDREW EDGAR [ORCHARD TREE SURGERY & MAINTENANCE] SHARES HIS EXPERIENCE AND TIPS ON CARING FOR TREES AND SHRUBS
T
rees are vital. As the biggest plants on the planet, they give us oxygen, store carbon, stabilise the soil and give life to the world’s wildlife. They also provide us with the materials for tools and shelter. Not only are trees essential for life, but as the longest living species on earth, they give us a link between the past, present and future. It’s critical that woodlands, rainforests and trees in urban settings, such as parks, are preserved and sustainably managed across the world. Trees benefit health The canopies of trees act as a physical filter, trapping dust and absorbing pollutants from the air. Each individual tree removes up to 1.7 kilos every year. They also
provide shade from solar radiation and reduce noise. Over 20 species of British trees and shrubs are known to have medicinal properties. The oil from birch bark, for example, has antiseptic properties. Research shows that within minutes of being surrounded by trees and green space, your blood pressure drops, your heart rate slows and your stress levels come down. Trees benefit the environment Trees absorb carbon dioxide as they grow and the carbon that they store in their wood helps slow the rate of global warming. They reduce wind speeds and cool the air as they lose moisture and reflect heat upwards from their leaves. It’s estimated that trees can reduce the temperature in a city by up to 7°C.

Trees also help prevent flooding and soil erosion, absorbing thousands of litres of stormwater. Trees boost wildlife Trees host complex microhabitats. When young, they offer habitation and food to amazing communities of birds, insects, lichen and fungi. When ancient, their trunks also provide the hollow cover needed by species such as bats, woodboring beetles, tawny owls and woodpeckers. One mature oak can be home to as many as 500 different species. Richmond Park is full of such trees, which is one of the reasons it has been designated a National Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest. Trees strengthen communities Trees strengthen the distinctive character of a place and encourage local pride. Urban woodland can be used as an educational resource and to bring groups together for activities like walking and bird-watching. Trees are also invaluable for children to play in and discover their sense of adventure. Trees grow the economy People are attracted to live, work and invest in green surroundings. Research shows that average house prices are 5-18% higher when properties are close to mature trees. Companies benefit from a healthier, happier workforce if there are parks and trees nearby. Trees protect the future Soon, for the first time in history, the number of people with homes in cities will outstrip those living in the countryside. Parks and trees will become an even more vital component of urban life. We must respect them and protect them for the future.

in is an extremely popular alcoholic beverage. This flavoured white spirit utilises barley, corn or rye in its distillation and dates from the Middle Ages. The base flavour comes from juniper berries. Highclere Castle is located approx 5 miles south of Newbury, Hampshire and is home to the 8th Earl and Countess of Carnarvon. A lot of very interesting history of this property and grounds is welldocumented. Highclere Castle and the Estate have been used, both internally and externally, for a good number of films and TV productions and known around the world as the fictional setting for the hugely popular production of Downton Abbey. Highclere Castle Gin (Alc. 43.5% Vol.) is multi award-winning and is produced from one of the oldest copper gin stills, dating back to the 19th century, in England’s oldest gin distillery. Very carefully,
botanicals, grown on the Highclere Estate, were selected and then after many, many weeks and months of experimenting, finally the selections were chosen for the recipe. The botanicals include essential oils and give Highclere Gin its outstanding, unique, smooth and elegant flavour. Juniper, lavender, coriander, lime flower, citrus peels, angelica root, cassia bark, green cardamom, liquorice root and peppercorns, plus Highclere oats are all included to produce the exquisite production that is Highclere Castle Gin. A phrase I have never used before is, “Try it, to believe it!” On its Own, with Ice, Gin & Tonic, Classic Martini, Negroni, White Lady, or whatever a favourite choice is, I found this gin most certainly did not disappoint – the prestigious awards that keep coming, are testament to that! As always, Enjoy! TREVOR LANGLEY

TRAVEL GUIDE
T
TRAVEL editor JANE SEDGWICK CAN ADVISE ON HOW TO TRAVEL SAFELY
raffic lights! Ok, I’ll admit it – and I’m sure I’m not the only one – I’m rather fed up of this now. The travel and aviation sectors are still waiting for clarification about which country will be put into green, amber or red. It’s likely that we will only find out at the beginning of May if and where leisure travel can start up again from 17th May at the earliest. By the time you read this, we may be a little clearer. To avoid confusion, this is what the traffic light system will look like: Green: Arrivals will need to take a pre-departure test as well as a PCR test on or before day 2 of their arrival back into the UK but will not need to quarantine on return (unless they receive a positive result) or take any additional tests, halving the cost of tests on their return from holiday. Amber: Arrivals will need to quarantine for a period of 10 days and take a pre-departure test, a PCR test on day 2 and day 8 with the option for Test to Release on day 5 to end self-isolation early. Red: Arrivals will be subject to restrictions currently in place for ‘red list’ countries which includes a 10-day stay in a managed quarantine hotel, pre-departure testing and PCR testing on day 2 and 8. There are rumours circulating by the tabloid press that New
Zealand and Australia will be on our green list. Well actually, that’s no use to anyone, because apart from allowing travel between those two countries, they won’t be opening their borders anytime soon. It’s more likely that the USA will allow us in in the next few months, long before we can travel ‘down under’.
THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A BETTER TIME TO USE THE SERVICES OF A TRUSTED TRAVEL PROFESSIONAL
time to use the services of a trusted travel professional. I can guide you through all the travel requirements, and when we are given the green light that we are all waiting for, I'll be here for you every step of the way. Still, there has been huge progress made. At least restrictions are easing, self catering holidays are now happening, and we can meet friends and family outside and eat a pub meal again. I can even help you with your UK break if you’re in no rush to head overseas just yet.
It’s so important that you don’t just consider the UK traffic light system in isolation before you make your travel plans. This is all about entry into the UK and where we can come back from without the need to quarantine. If you are planning an overseas holiday during the coming months, once Boris says we can, it’s so important to be aware of entry requirements into your chosen destination. I have access to a weekly ‘traffic light’ chart, produced by a leading figure in our industry, and I’ve attached one from 15 April. It does give a reasonably good indication as to which countries may appear on our green list. As time moves on, and other countries roll out their vaccinations, there will be more and more countries in the green. There has never been a better

GARDEN
The Joys of Spring
I
Happy gardening! WITH GARDEN EDITOR David Fletcher MCIHort
have to admit that spring is my favourite season. This year it represents more than ever hope: the end of a particularly difficult winter for all of us and the advent of longer days and warmer weather. But as gardeners we know that chilly nights are a reminder that summer is a little way off; many of us will have had our gardens touched by frost very recently, and in my garden I have had a few losses. Nonetheless the tulips are looking good, the hellebores that started flowering weeks ago are still going, and my pulmonarias are a cheery reminder of things to come. If I have a favourite month then it has to be May. The succession of flowers that are to be seen in late April spread into May and just as they are turning are replaced with the showy blooms of Azaleas, Magnolias and Rhododendrons. There are many others of course; May represents an early insight into summer. Let’s hope it’s a good one! If you can drag yourself away from your own garden then spring is the ideal time to look at others. With the easing of restrictions all the great gardens are opening up, and in Cumbria there is a garden only a mile or so from Windermere that is special
Holehird Gardens, Windermere
on many counts. Holehird Gardens is as many of you no doubt know, the home of the Lakeland Horticultural Society who are celebrating their 50th anniversary. The gardens are run by volunteers who have recently been asked to select their 50 plant favourites, now the subject of a book. What a wonderful idea! Another interesting feature of Holehird Gardens is the fact that it is home to four national collections of plants: Meconopsis, Astilbe, Daboecia and Polystichum. It also has a Lakeland Collection of Hydrangea. These are particularly suited to the climatic conditions of the Lake District. Holehird describes itself as ‘A Lakeland Garden for all Seasons’ and this is certainly very true. May is particularly beautiful, when of course the Meconopsis can be seen in all their glory.
May is also the month of Rhododendrons and Azaleas there. Spring is also a great time to visit a flower show. This year I will be going to the Harrogate Spring Flower Show. Everything will be a bit different due to restrictions but at least it is going ahead! Many places require that you book a timed slot, and most places use e – tickets that are booked easily online. There is something particularly lovely about a spring show. Everything is so fresh, and the fragrances of spring are so different to that of the summer. Invariably on your return to your own garden you will be fired up with ideas and inspired by the things you have seen. You’ll also appreciate just how much there is to do, as spring is a busy time! Happy gardening

THE RUBETTES - GOLD
n the immediate aftermath of The Beatles, Britain was awash with groups that had been slogging up and down the highways of Britain playing endless one-nighters in Town Halls, clubs, leisure centres and youth clubs. Consequently when Lady Luck smiled on them and they got their chance to make a record, they were well rehearsed and had learned enough stagecraft to get them by in front of a larger audience. Later on, entrepreneurs, quite often seasons songwriters, that hadn't found a group to manage and record took matters into their own hands and created one for themselves; the songs being (almost) more important than the acts chosen to record them. The Rubettes were one such group. Indeed when Sugar Baby Love was released and galloped to number one on the British charts in 1974, The Rubettes existed in name only. The record was made by session musicians along with session singer Paul Da Vinci. Such was the record's success, a group had to be found to capitalise on the half million records that had been sold. John Richardson, Pete Arnesen, Tony Thorpe, Mick Clarke and Bill Hurd became The Ru-
bettes and went on to deliver eight more Top 40 hits both here and across most of Europe. For some groups that had been created in a similar way, the limelight was merely a fleeting moment, but The Rubettes were different; success, for them, was a much longer phenomenon. Here now is a 3 x CD set of everything the group ever recorded. All their hits are here, many of which, when you hear them on the radio are instantly recognisable and have stood the test of time better than many. Juke Box Jive and I Can Do It can still light up the airwaves if given the chance and, even when a change of style heralded Baby I Know (Top 10 in 1977), record-buyers were happy to add this distinctly American West Coast country-pop offering to their record collections– and rightly so. Gold by The Rubettes will remind you that the seventies had more good music than some would have you believe. Austin Powell has spent his entire working life in the music business. From being an agent and manager of ‘beat groups’ in the sixties to working for major record companies in the seventies and eighties, he has also held management positions at radio stations in England, Wales and on the Isle Of Man.

FELLWALKING ENTHUSIAST STEPHEN ROBSON REFLECTS ON A LABOUR OF LOVE WHICH TOOK FORTY YEARS TO ACHIEVE – COMPLETING ALL 214 WAINWRIGHT FELLS
would like to introduce to you an interesting chap, called John McCarthy. He goes out under the light of the full moon twelve times a year with his pals (howlers he calls them) having adventures in the lake district. John was interviewed recently on Radio Cumbria and his new book 'Full Moon Lunar Antics' is selling well. I recntly posed some questions to him. John What is the Concept of Lunarantics? It originated because my friends and I were all busy at work and with families, and it was difficult to align diaries for fun nights out. We often needed to look in diaries 3 weeks in advance to find a gap that worked for all. So aligning nights out with a regular occurrence like the 1st of the month or a Full Moon seemed like a great idea. The Full Moon is an identifiable feature and the lunar clock acts as count down to our next night out. Do we ever walk by day ? Yes, we all walk, canoe, climb, mountaineer, cave, swim and eat cheese by day, that is how we have developed the skills and knowledge to be able to do it safely by night. Do you use any specialist equipment ? The best quality halogen headtorch is a great investment. Other than that, mainly the same kit as during the day. What is your favourite destination? Too many to name. We try not to repeat nights out but we have had several nights on different routes on Helvellyn and Blencathra, and the north lakes of Ullswater, Thirlmere and
Derwentwater are well paddled in a variety of craft. Numbers of folk? Approx 20 folk receive the monthly email now. Usually half a dozen or so attend. I am the constant. Occasionally diary clashes mean only 2 or 3 of us head out, on family full moon camps highest attendance is 46. Is it weather dependant? No definitely not. We go out every full moon regardless of the weather. That's the point, we just tailor what we do and take anemometers with us to measure the big winds. What is the appeal? The challenge, uncertainty, friendship, commitment, resilience all under the light of the full moon. It's great to be out with friends in a stunning environment. How do you feel the next day? Mainly exhilarated by our exploits. Sometimes tired. The two mile swim in windermere
We are committed to successfully promoting your business or venture
broke a few folk – they could hardly stand the next day! What do your family think? They think its great. They recognise the energy levels and the sense of community we have produced. They often come out and join us. Children love seeing the moon. Does this impact on your everyday life? Our nights out empower me, they fill me with joy. They have made me a part of an adventurous community. It encourages us to think of ever stranger ideas of what to do and where to go. Last night I got a text saying why have we never built a coracle and paddled it under a Full Moon, so that has gone on the list! Have you have any hairy moments? Not really. Remarkably incident free. It's almost like we know what we are doing and plan well and carry out effective risk assessments, have the right kit and know which way is up. Why did you write the book? To inspire other folk to gather their own clans and head out, within their comfort zone, to enjoy the moonlit world, commune with nature and develop life affirming stories. ONE LIFE, LIVE IT. Where can I buy a copy of your book? Direct from me at Lunarantics for £13.99. Email: lunarantics@gmail.com Most independent bookshops in Cumbria. Online from my publisher JJ Moffs.

Residential Property Taxes
P
RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY CAPITAL GAINS 30 DAY REPORTING REQUIREMENT
revious articles have concentrated on inheritance tax and planning opportunities around this. For the next few months we are going to focus on property taxes and look at different tax aspects for furnished holiday lets, residential letting and property development. This month we are focusing on the reporting requirements for capital gains tax purposes on the sale of UK residential property. Most people are aware that when you sell your main residence there will be, in most cases, no capital gains to report and no tax to pay. The reason for this is because there is a specific exemption which means that where a property has been occupied as your main residence it is possible to claim this relief. There is no necessity to formally make a claim as the
Alex Dent [Tax Manager] relief is automatic for individuals. However, trustees and executors will need to complete a tax return to claim the relief as it is not given automatically to these groups. However, if there have been periods when you have not occupied the property as your main residence, perhaps because you have worked away from home or you have a second property which you have also used, then there may be a potential capital gain. From April, 2020, it is now necessary to report capital gains to HM Revenue and Customs within 30 days of the completion date where there is a capital gains tax liability. This reporting requirement applies to all UK residential property whether or not it has been used
as your main residence, a long term residential let or a furnished holiday let. It applies to properties sold or gifted by individuals, trustees and executors of estates. The online process for individuals and trustees is relatively straight forward. However it is more complex for executors. If you are looking to sell any residential property which has not been used 100% as your main residence you should take tax advice to ascertain whether there may be tax to report and pay within the 30 day deadline. HM Revenue and Customs were taking a light touch approach for the first year of these new rules. However now that we are into the second year interest and penalties are likely to be charged for late registration and payments.
