THE 2020 CENSUS: IT’S NOT TOO LATE! There’s still time to make sure your household is counted in the 2020 Census. You can self-respond online, by phone, or by mail using the information provided below. Your response is important: the amount of federal funding the Village will receive over the next 10 years is determined by our population count. Funding can be allocated to health care, infrastructure, education and library services, and much more. An accurate count also makes sure your voice is heard in Congress; Census data is used to redraw congressional districts and to decide the number of seats Illinois has in the House of Representatives. Please be aware that on July 30, 2020, the U.S. Census Bureau launched their Non-Response Follow-Up Phase, during which enumerators visit households that have yet to respond, and will continue until the fall. An enumerator can be identified by their official Census Bureau ID badge, bag or laptop, and letter. They will never ask to enter your home and will only ask questions that appear on the official census form.

a great COVID-19 distraction! HALLOWEEN HOME DECORATING CONTEST Tips To Help Protect Yourself From Scams While we continue to adjust from the impacts of the pandemic, scammers continue to come up with creative ways to trick you into giving them money. Here are a few helpful tips provided by the Federal Communications Commission to help avoid being a victim. • Do not respond to calls or texts from unknown numbers, or any others that appear suspicious. • Never share your personal or financial information via email, text messages, or over the phone. • Be cautious if you’re being pressured to share any information or make a payment immediately. • Scammers often spoof phone numbers to trick you into answering or responding. Remember that government agencies will never call you to ask for personal information or money. • Do not click any links in a text message. If a friend sends you a text with a suspicious link that seems out of character, call them to make sure they weren’t hacked. • Always check on a charity (for example, by calling or looking at its actual website) before donating. If you think you’ve been a victim of a coronavirus scam, contact law enforcement immediately.

Is Halloween your favorite holiday? It’s time to gather all your scariest decorations and get creative in this year’s home Halloween decorating contest! Nominate your home by emailing the property address, name, email or phone number and picture (if possible) to holidaycontest@bensenville.il.us. Submitted properties will be posted to the Village’s Facebook page. Judging will be done by the Holiday Decorating Committee and awards will be given to the best decorated single family homes. Winners will be announced at the October 27th Village Board Meeting and posted to the Village’s website at bensenville.il.us. NOMINATION PERIOD – NOW THROUGH OCTOBER 23RD!

TRICK OR TREATING OCTOBER 31ST With Halloween right around the corner, it will soon be time to put together your most creative costumes and head out for trick-or-treating in the Village of Bensenville. However, as we continue to battle COVID-19, trick-or-treating and the ways we celebrate may look a little different this year. The Village is encouraging safe trick-or-treating alternatives. Also, for resident’s who do not wish to participate, the Village is offering printable window signs indicating that your house is not participating in the festivities. Printable signs are available on our website at bensenville.il.us. Please also visit the Villages website for updated trick-or-treating hours and additional information. We wish you a fun and safe Halloween!

REMAINING 2020 RESIDENTIAL BRUSH AND BRANCH COLLECTIONS As summer comes to a close, remember that the Village’s large brush and branch collections end in November. School is back! It is unbelievable that the 2020-2021 school year is here. We continue to live in a COVID-19 global pandemic, and will continue with the same priorities: 1. Safety and Wellness for our students, their families, and staff 2. Learning: Provide a rigorous and engaging learning experience for our student whether we are in a remote learning or hybrid learning environment. 3. Communication: Communicate with our students, parents, and community partners in a timely and accurate manner. We at Fenton are building upon the successes of 2019-20. In particular, the Great Class of 2020. Some of those success include: • Our graduation and attendance rates remain high, 92% • 38 graduates earned the Illinois Seal of Biliteracy • 27 graduates were Illinois State Scholars • Victor Aristakessian was given Bensenville’s prestigious volunteer award • Governor JB Pritzker visited Fenton to announce his proposed expansion of a grant program, referencing Fenton as a prime example of improving accessibility and performance in Advanced Placement classes • Malien Tingpalpong won a speech state championship (second consecutive year Fenton has had a speech state champion) • Staff members Cameron Kopp, Deomara Velez, and Demetrea Danigeles received Those Who Excel awards from the Illinois State Board of Education • Counselor Paul Welsh received the Government Relations Award from the National Association for College Admission Counseling • We began the process of addressing our aging facilities • We created a joint Portrait of a Graduate with Bensenville School District 2 and Wood Dale School District 7 • We came together as one to continue quality learning amid a global pandemic • We distributed more than 60,000 meals during the pandemic • Underwent a district wide equity audit to better serve all of our students Our staff and administrators did a phenomenal job this summer of planning for all COVID-19 related scenarios (Remote Learning 2.0; Hybrid Learning; In-Person Learning) for this new 2020-21 school year. We expect to achieve just as much or more this year. Whether your students are learning remotely from home, here at Fenton, or in a hybrid mix, we truly hope they are able to focus on the lessons our amazing teachers have prepared.

Below are a few tips for starting the year strong, in whatever format we find ourselves in. CREATE A ROUTINE | A routine is a great way to keep motivated, engaged, and productive. CREATE A TO-DO-LIST | Stay focused by creating daily and weekly lists. MINIMIZE DISTRACTIONS | Put away the video games, cell phones, and stick to your work during school hours. CREATE A WORKSTATION | Designate a place for working at home and corner it off. That way, when you are there, your brain knows to focus on the work. PRACTICE SELF-CARE | Take care of yourself by eating properly, getting enough exercise, and sleep. ASK FOR HELP | If you are uncertain about anything, email the teacher and/or email us at fentonhelp@fenton100.org. Specifically, when school is occurring in the building we strongly encourage everyone abide by the three Ws: WEAR a mask | WATCH your distance between others WASH your hands Please continue to monitor your email and our social media accounts for more updates as the school year progresses.

CLASS OF 2020!

we couldn’t be prouder!

FENTON CELEBRATES AND HONORS THE CLASS OF 2020 FENTON COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL | District 100 1000 West Green Street Bensenville | Illinois 60106 630 766 2500 www.fenton100.org Mission Statement Cultivate successful, passionate learners through rigor, relevance and relationships.

Graduation at Fenton High School was a bit different this year. State and federal health guidelines prohibited large gatherings, but Fenton’s staff still went to great lengths to celebrate and honor the Class of 2020. Fenton’s staff was excited to see many of our exceptional graduates during a drive through Graduation Procession, which occurred on Saturday, July 25. Restrictions were eased, allowing for the shorter event. Six one-hour time slots grouped alphabetically by graduates’ last name brought families back to campus, where they took turns driving through Fenton’s bus lane. One car at a time, graduates and their families were allowed to exit their car and approach Fenton’s front door to walk across a decorated stage and pose for photos. School leadership was on hand to offer congratulations. But before the restrictions eased up, Fenton created a 60-minute Virtual Graduation video filled with yearbook photos of all students, submitted quotes from Fenton Scholars, comments from community officials and school board members, as well as speeches from Principal Jovan Lazarevic and Superintendent James Ongtengco. Everything was posted on May 17, the same day our traditional graduation was scheduled to take place. That video, plus a congratulatory video from Fenton’s staff and PDFs of the graduation program remain available on fenton100.org. Thanks to Applied Tech Teacher Lauren Lemm, Fenton also distributed signs that graduates could place in their front yard or a window of their home. The signs, which can still be found all over town, read proud home of a Fenton High School graduate. Utilizing our great partnership with the Village of Bensenville, a congratulatory image was created and displayed prominently on the digital message board along York Road during the months of April and May. Leading up to the drive through graduation, Fenton displayed the names of graduated seniors on our digital message board along Grove Avenue. Fenton is extremely proud of the Class of 2020, and we’re excited to see what goals they pursue and accomplish in the future. Please, keep in touch.

D2...a great place to work! NOW HIRING!

A PICTURE OF EMPOWERMENT

District 2 partners with Fenton and Wood Dale District 7 to paint a Portrait of a Graduate. The Portrait of a Graduate is a collection of qualities and capabilities that will empower our students to be The Best Me I Can Be. The three districts created it to serve as a framework for developing skill competencies, personal attributes, and educational opportunities that will prepare students for an unknown future in a complex, rapidly changing world. Knowing what a community values for its graduates is important to mapping the pathways to get there. Without this clear picture, any road may seem like a good one. As a North Star document, the Portrait of a Graduate will guide the three districts as they align their work with this vision. And for our students, parents and teachers, the Portrait of a Graduate will clearly communicate that we, as a community, believe these vital skills and character traits will serve our graduates well no matter the pathway they choose for their lives. Identified as empowerments, they are as follows:

GET YOUR START AS A BSD2 SUBSTITUTE TEACHER! Are you a teacher or college graduate? District 2 is hiring substitute teachers! If you have a bachelor’s degree in any subject, you are eligible to earn up to $140 per day at a nationally recognized school district, and receive paid training before your first day of teaching! Substitute teaching is a great way to make connections, build your resume, and even continue your job search while working in a rewarding and flexible environment. For more information, call 630.766.5940, or apply online at bsd2.org/Employment.

SOCIALLY EMPOWERED • Communicate effectively • Empathize with others by understanding and accepting their diverse experiences • Contribute as an engaged citizen in one’s community EMOTIONALLY EMPOWERED • Develop self-awareness of one’s emotions, thoughts and values • Grow confident in one’s ability to reach a goal • Persevere through challenges CREATIVELY EMPOWERED • Engage one’s curiosity about the world • Take risks to explore new possibilities • Demonstrate and contribute innovative ideas and solutions INTELLECTUALLY EMPOWERED • Become an independent critical thinker • Seek knowledge in order to achieve personal fulfillment and professional aspirations • Be growth oriented recognizing the value of continuous improvement CULTURALLY EMPOWERED • Advocate for one’s self and others by being a voice for social justice • Establish a sense of belonging by accepting one’s self and others • Collaborate with others creating a sense of harmony within our interconnected world PHYSICALLY EMPOWERED • Understand the importance of self-care and practice healthy routines • Appreciate the benefits of physical fitness • Value and nurture one’s mental well being

WE WANT YOU!

TO BE A DISTRICT 2 BUS DRIVER! WHAT WE OFFER: • $21/hour to start • Safety Bonus • Attendance Bonus

PAINTING THE PICTURE | The communities of Bensenville and Wood Dale came together to voice their collective hopes, dreams, and aspirations for their students by creating this Portrait of a Graduate. The three districts surveyed more than 1,000 stakeholders, who shared the skills and attributes they believed students should possess upon graduating from Fenton High School. A diverse committee of about 50 students, parents, staff, and community members from all three districts studied the survey responses, discussed their recurring themes, and identified six empowerments to include in the portrait. In March 2020, the Boards of Education from all three school districts approved that Portrait of a Graduate, with its inspiring theme of EMPOWERED: The Best Me I Can Be.

MEAL DISTRIBUTION

District 2 still distributing breakfasts and lunches to K-8 students Bensenville School District 2’s meal distribution program continued as the 2020-21 school year began remotely on Wednesday, August 12.

Students’ names and schools must be recorded when they receive their meals, so students should bring their student IDs from last year, if possible.

Meals are being distributed grab-and-go style on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:15 a.m.-1:10 p.m.at all three schools and five neighborhood bus stops.

BSD2 MEAL DISTRIBUTION LOCATIONS BLACKHAWK MIDDLE SCHOOL | 250 S. Church Road TIOGA SCHOOL | 212 W. Memorial Road W.A. JOHNSON SCHOOL | 252 Ridgewood Drive YORKBROOK APARTMENTS BUS STOP | 100 George Street 1090 W. IRVING PARK ROAD BUS STOP | 1090 W. However, meals are only available for registered BSD2 students in Grades K-8, and are free only to those who qualify for free and reduced-price lunches. Meals will be distributed to individual students in bundles. On Mondays, they will receive two lunches and two breakfasts, and on Wednesdays, they will receive three lunches and three breakfasts. Prices for paying students are $9.40 for meals on Mondays, and $14.10 for meals on Wednesdays, to be charged against the student’s deposit with the District.

FOOD DRIVE

The Bensenville & Wood Dale Food Pantry needs your donations. Food for Families pop-up pantries have been cancelled until further notice, but the Bensenville & Wood Dale Food Pantry remains open from 8:30 – 11 am on Saturdays.

For more information, call 630.766.9382.

However, the Pantry is currently facing a canned food shortage. District 2 often holds canned food drives to support the pantry, but cannot do so while schools are closed during the pandemic. Residents can still support the Pantry by dropping off donations of canned goods directly to the Pantry, which is located at 192 S. Center Street. Donations may be dropped off any weekday from 7:30 – 11:00 am.

GET TESTED!

COVID-19 Testing available Tuesdays and Thursdays in Bensenville To remove any confusion over insurance plans accepted, VNA will serve all patients with insurance regardless of whether it accepts their insurance plan for COVID-19 services. Individuals without insurance are also served and this is done at no cost to them.

VNA Health Care is operating a COVID-19 Community Testing Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30 – 4:30 pm at St. Alexis Catholic Church, 400 Wood Avenue in Bensenville. Testing is available for those with or without symptoms. Individuals will be assessed by a VNA doctor or nurse practitioner immediately prior to COVID-19 testing during the same appointment. 14
