e’re always looking for ways to improve Village People for you, our readers, so we’re very excited to introduce our brand new Style & Beauty pages; helping you to look and feel your very best. This must-see section includes two great new features. In ‘Style Counsel’, local style guru Chrissi Rix answers your questions and gives expert advice on dressing with confidence. So take a look, and if you have a question for Chrissi, pop an email over to me and it could be featured in a future issue. You Beauty! is our new product review feature, where Village People sub editor Lucy Ohsten tries the best natural, sustainable and ethical beauty products in Norfolk and Suffolk. We know you’ll love them, because they really do work. I’ve definitely got my eye on a few! Over 13 years of working with local businesses, I don’t think we’ve ever had so many job

vacancies to promote. So if you, or someone you know, is looking for a new job, make sure you check out the variety of vacancies in our JOBS section. It’s so great to be able to include a page of local events again on our Village Notice Board, and don’t forget that we can promote local village and community events for FREE. So if you are organising a local event, hop online and submit the details so we can spread the good news. We’ve got some excellent ideas for local days out inside and, as usual, if you have any suggestions for new content that you think over 155,000 local people would be interested in, do send me an email and we can have a chat. Let’s hope our summer is filled with sun, laughter and passports ready to go and explore. Stay safe and look after each other.

GOOD NEWS FROM OUR REGION: Access for all

A

fter months of fundraising and planning behind the scenes, the long-awaited extension to the Falcon Meadow footpath, in Bungay, has been completed – making the full length of the Meadow accessible to all. The footpath extension has been created specifically to provide access to those who are less mobile – wheelchair users, families with pushchairs and elderly people – who may be less sure of their footing. Graham Halliwell, from Falcon Meadow Community Trust, said: “Falcon Meadow exists for the community to enjoy, and as

Trustees we have a duty to ensure that everyone in the community can access it easily. There is huge pleasure in walking the full length of the Meadow, but at certain times of the year the mud used to make the Bridge Street end virtually inaccessible. We hope that this path will allow everyone, including people with restricted mobility, to enjoy the views and tranquillity that the Meadow has to offer.” The Trustees would like to thank the East Suffolk Community Partnerships Fund and the National Lottery Community Fund for

ortwell Community Centre will host a very special fundraiser on 24 and 25 July for the Parochial Church of Homersfield — and it will be a must-attend event for music lovers. Organiser Lucy Hammond said: “We have asked people to donate unwanted CDs, DVDs and vinyl records and the response has been amazing. We now have over 1,700 vinyl, 1,700 DVDs and 1,000 CDs, plus a selection of cassettes and audio books. People’s generosity is very humbling. One couple arrived and gave us 700 vinyl records!

“The world of vinyl pricing is very new to us and we have been on a steep learning curve. Our crash course has taught us that the value varies greatly depending on the pressing, its condition and whether it’s still popular. They are now all very reasonably priced, because we want people to get a good deal, and categorised so they are easy to find. We are very much hoping there will be a good turnout for the event. Many items are 3 for a £1 and there will be lots of cake and cups of tea too.”

SECURITY

Special offers to keep your home safe A local business is running a special offer to help householders keep their home and valuable possessions secure. Malthouse Security Ltd, near Diss, wants to thank loyal customers for their support during the long-running Covid pandemic by holding some of its prices for CCTV and intruder alarm systems until the end of 2021. The specialist security company is also highlighting the dangers faced by homeowners who are starting to go out and about far more and returning to work, leaving their homes empty and potentially vulnerable to thieves. Malthouse Security has built a reputation over the years for ensuring the security of homes and commercial premises, and

personal service is their top priority. The company has worked hard to keep their customers happy during the unprecedented challenges faced by the virus. One local householder, from Redgrave, said: “We have had new CCTV and intruder alarm systems installed by Malthouse Security Ltd and are really happy with the service from start to finish.” A spokesman for Malthouse Security said: “The longer and, hopefully, sunny days mean we will spend far more time in our garden, out in Suffolk and

Norfolk’s delightfful countryside, and away on eagerly-anticipate ed holidays. “But this mean ns we need to make surre we don’t provide burglars or opportunist thieves with an open invitation to steal from our homes. Therefore, we are offering fixed prices on some of our products for the rest of the year as an incentive for people in East Anglia to upgrade their home security, so they can feel safe knowing that Malthouse Security is protecting them.”

Call Malthouse Security Ltd today on 01379 890 606, email sales@malthouse-security.co.uk or www.malthouse-security.co.uk for more details.

VILLAGE LIFE

Gospel from The Saints By Julia Collins, who lives in Saint Nicholas

W

ith restrictions gradually easing, and vaccination rates climbing, relaxation really has a chance to set in. How succulent every meet-up and invitation feels, how juicy the visit to cafe or restaurant, with (at last) slightly more attention paid to conversation than the door handles we have touched and our proximity to fellow customers! Landmark days are returning by stealth, and a schedule for The St Margaret’s Annual Flower and Produce Show was optimistically tucked inside our regular village magazine. With so many categories, there is something for everyone, from the stolid home produce to the unusually themed flower arrangements. Serried rows of culinary triumphs await judgement as to their perfection — flavour, texture and appearance taking equal share as tough criteria. In the children’s section ‘A Picture of Your Family’ and ‘An Animal Made from A Vegetable’ vie for attention, occasionally merging as far as recognisable features are concerned. Imaginative handicrafts and impressively atmospheric photographs warrant patient scrutiny, while ‘Handmade Toys - Any Medium’ demand a closer look. The main attractions are, of course, the very serious vegetable entries, from potatoes, (coloured as well as white), through garlic, carrots and cucumber to tomatoes. Every item is ‘first day at school scrubbed’ and presented 16

with utmost intent upon a white, paper plate. Herbs and hens’ eggs bridge the gap as we arrive at the plant section: foliage, flowering and succulent, are all equally engaging, before we meet the sweetly perfumed roses and sweet peas. Unlike the floral arrangements, these participants are assessed upon their physicality, the ‘Miss Worlds’ of their species, slender of stem and near perfect in every petal! Innocent brownies and fluffy scones tease the onlooker with their pillowy perfection. Crumbly blonde shortbread and shiny sausage rolls, delicious, immaculate…but not to be touched! Wouldn’t just considering entering such home creations immediately foster burnt edges,

snapped stems and wobbly seams?! For the atmosphere is serious. The background chatter may be gentle but, make no mistake, the competition is fierce. Such green and pleasant annual combat carries weight. Although the prize money is endearingly modest, the importance attached to every class is considerable. Village rivals joust with their courgettes, beans and carrots, vie over vases and compete over crusts, for cups can be won and engraved for posterity, tangible testaments to craftsmanship and skill. And there is true delight in the interaction, the shared experience, technically inside, with a bracing breeze swooping off the fields through open windows and doors.

RECYCLING

Grandmother knows best! Caroline Topping looks at how to store food without single use plastic

I

t has become more and more of an issue for me to mitigate my purchase of items wrapped in packaging with the thought that somewhere, if I return my packaging, somebody is recycling it. I have therefore decided that I will try wherever possible to refuse packaging. This leads on to a whole new dilemma and one I believe our grandmothers knew the answer to, but with our faster pace of life and higher dependence upon convenience, it has been forgotten! So how do you store food without single use plastic? When I look in my fridge and cupboards I see fruit, veg, bread and cheese either laying there free of packaging, but deteriorating quickly, or in some form of ‘protection'! I try to purchase my shopping from independents and free of packaging, taking my little nets and 'bags for life' and asking the shop to load my bags with mushrooms, grapes and other goodies, and then I cycle home with them safely in my pannier bags and basket. But once I get them home, the quandary arises… how do I store my food to give it the longest lifespan?

I typed my dilemma into Google and found 'Eco With Em'! What a hero she is, offering some great tips and real solutions. Here they are: Leafy vegetables, cut the ends off the stems then store in glasses of water in the fridge, or on your counter/ window sill. Onions and potatoes, store in a basket in a dark space. Wrap your lettuce as individual leaves in a tea towel and place in the fridge. Wrap bread in a cloth (or pillow case) and store in a wooden bread bin. Put leftovers in the clean jars you have been storing for these occasions, or cover with a plate and refrigerate. Stand celery and float carrots in water. Wrap beans and peas in a damp cloth. Store whole items like stoned fruit, bananas and tomatoes in the freezer. Use bees wax wraps for cheese.

This is a great starting place for ideas and to provoke thought. If just a few people try these tips and reduce their waste, then we will be heading to an emptier bin, less potential pollution, landfill and better use of our raw resources. ODYLIQUE SMOOTH FOOT KIT Coconut Candy Body Scrub, Calendula Balm. Organic, natural products. Cracked heel repair within 7 days.

I

don’t have badly cracked heels, but my feet are a bit rough after going barefoot all summer and needed some TLC. This system really worked a treat. The Scrub exfoliated and smoothed my skin, delivering a nice soothing massage effect too, and the Calendula Balm added a lovely fragrant layer of serious moisturiser. After a week my feet were smooth,

crack-free and looked and felt rejuvenated. A superb feel-good foot fixer that really put a spring in my step! Tip: Use the Balm on any other dry areas, such as lips, elbows and hands.

NATURAL SPA SUPPLIES FACE CARE KIT Hemp Oil Soft Soap, Rhassoul Clay, Organic Rose Water, Cold Pressed Organic Argan Oil. A complete, natural, anti-aging facial skincare solution.

I

’m going to rave about this kit, because it immediately transformed my face! The pleasant morning and nighttime cleanse, tone and moisturise routine left my skin looking amazing; bright, fresh, smooth, glowing and…yes…years younger. Even my most honest friends said it had taken five years off me. So this really does deliver on every level, and it’s all natural,

sustainable and in reusable/ recyclable glass bottles. Great natural sponges, too. This is a winner, and highly recommended by this now fresh-faced fan! Tip: Use the Rhassoul Clay all over your body for super-soft clean, fresh skin.

H

aving one less bottle in the sh hower has to be a good thing, so I was very on board with the solid shampoo bar. It’s very easy to use, worked up into a good lather and, used with my usual conditioner conditioner, left my hair soft and bouncy. And no plastic bottle waste. The Whipped Body Butter looked and smelled edible! Sumptuous consistency,

melted into my skin and left it soft and supple. A few drops of the Facial Serum at night soothed and moisturised my skin after a day in the sun and it smelled fantastic! Tip: There is a fragrance-free Facial Serum available.

ECO SWAPS – save your skin…and the planet! W

e all have a face care routine, don’t we? But this often involves using products which are expensive, packed in plastic and that contain a cocktail of chemicals and preservatives. Despite their claims, many of these products can cause premature ageing, pigmentation, dryness and, worst of all, acne. But there is an alternative; the Natural Spa Supplies Face Care Kit. It’s natural, organic, plastic-free, economical, and it will immediately transform your skin, because it’s the perfect antiaging face care system designed to optimise your complexion. But don’t take our word for it, look at the reviews online, and in the

beauty pages in this magazine, it really is a game changer for your skin, your pocket…and the environment! The Face Care Kit contains four key products that all work together to give your skin the best treatment its ever had. You start with antimicrobial British Hemp Oil Soap to exfoliate and deep clean the pores. Then wash with Rhassoul Clay using a sea sponge, to detox the skin and keep it pure and youthful. Next, a spritz of Organic Rose Water to balance skin tones, reduce broken capillaries and tighten the skin. i Helen, many of my clients are facing this challenge and it can be hard to find clothes that make you feel good. But I’m a firm believer that your shape, not size, matters most, and wearing the right clothes to balance your body proportions can take inches off you! The ideal body shape is the hourglass, denoted by shoulders and hips in line with a defined waist. Many of us do not fit into this category, we have wider hips creating a pear shape, or broad shoulders creating a top heavy shape. Some of us might be rounder in the middle, but whatever we are we can create illusions to balance the body to create a slimmer, more stylish you.

Here are a few quick fix tricks! n Pay attention to your neckline. Wide, scoop, slash or boat necks tend to extend the shoulders outwards, while ‘V' necks draw the eye inwards. If you are top heavy, choose the latter to narrow shoulders and create more balance with your lower torso. If you feel hip challenged, opt for the wider necklines that add the illusion of extending shoulders to balance with those hips.

Shaped and lightly tailored clothes are an effective way to increase the illusion of a waist. Jackets, tops or sweaters which have been cut to draw in at the waist are your best friend. There can be a tendency to hide in looser clothing, but try to avoid straight or baggy lines which can add pounds. n

n Always leave your lightly tailored jackets undone so there is a column of another colour showing underneath, as this will lengthen and

narrow the torso. Check the hem length of your jacket or top, too, and ensure it finishes above or below the widest point of your hips. Finishing it there can add pounds! Lastly, extend those legs by choosing high rise, straighter styles. My favourites are Amazing Woman with tummy control, or Freddy Curvy jeans, which lift and hold in everything! Wear a similar colour footwear to your chosen bottoms to add inches to your legs, creating a longer, slimmer you! n

f you’re looking for a relaxing place to enjoy a cuppa, connect with friendly likeminded people and try new activities, then The Shoebox Community Hub (formerly KindaKafe) in Norwich city centre is a great place to start. The Shoebox is a community hub offering volunteer opportunities, community support, group facilities and events, with a focus on tackling loneliness and isolation. There is an active user network and we are firmly established as an inspirational hub for local kindness. Our community lounge is the perfect place to enjoy a good book, meet with friends, connect with fellow members and make use of our free wifi to catch up on your projects. If you fancy a cuppa, just help yourself to a great selection of teas and freshly brewed coffee from our refreshment counter. You may even find a homemade cake or two

baked by our lovely volunteers! Just pop a donation in our honesty box. The Shoebox is also home to the famous Hidden History of Norwich Tours. The revenue from these tours supports the work we do at our community hub, building communities and reducing loneliness, so a big thank you from us for your support. Our ‘hidden street’ tour takes you on a journey down two flights of stairs beneath The Shoebox venue. You can explore the layers of architecture dating from the 15th Century, nestled below Castle Meadow, and discover the past of our Fine City. On our Tombland Walking tour, you will see Norwich’s history of Romans, rioters and rebels, priors, friars and preachers come to life. With a mix of tales, true accounts and local legends, this 90-minute walking tour will help you discover the Norwich you never noticed.

ART

Giants of the art world Village People showcases art exhibitions and much more at the Sainsbury Centre, University of East Anglia Bill Brandt | Henry Moore: Closes 22 August 2021 This major exhibition traces the parallel and intersecting careers of two leading artists of the 20th century. The photographer Bill Brandt (1904–1983) and sculptor Henry Moore (1898–1986) first crossed paths during WWII, when they created images of civilians sheltering in the London Underground during the Blitz. These photographs by Brandt and drawings by Moore today rank among their most iconic works, and bring together almost 200 pieces including significant sculpture, iconic photographs and drawings, little-known photo collages and rare original colour transparencies. Bill Brandt | Henry Moore reveals the interdisciplinary range of these two artists, exploring how they both responded creatively to the British landscape and communities during the turbulent times in which they lived.

Grayson Perry: The Pre-Therapy Years: 19 September 2021 – 30 January 2022 The Sainsbury Centre presents a new exhibition that surveys for the first time Grayson Perry’s earliest forays into the art world, re-introducing the explosive and creative works made during his formative years between 1982 and 1994. His ground-breaking pots of this period have been reunited for the first time following a hugely successful appeal to the public in 2018 by Perry and The Holburne Museum in Bath, where this exhibition first opened in January 2020. Grayson says: “This show has been such a joy to put together and to see these early works again, many of which I have not seen since the 80s. It is as near as I will ever get to meeting myself as a young man, an angrier, priapic me with huge energy but a much smaller wardrobe.”

Grayson Perry: Cocktail Party, 1989

There’s more to explore at the Sainsbury Centre Why not take a leisurely walk around the Sculpture Park at the Sainsbury Centre, which sits in 350 acres of parkland with a lake? The number of works on display is growing all the time, and this year Leiko Ikemura's Usagi Kannon sculpture (2012/19) will be installed. Inside the Sainsbury Centre itself, you can see the remarkable Sainsbury Art Collection for free, and park free too. There is a beautiful new café and terrace, where you can sit outside and enjoy the beautiful view with coffee and cake. But if you can’t get to the Centre, there are plenty of things for children and adults to do and learn on the website, sainsburycentre.ac.uk. For more information, go to sainsburycentre.ac.uk

f you have a small garden or patio, it can be a challenge to create the look you want with limited space. But there are plenty of tips and tricks to help you transform even the tiniest plot into something very special. Here’s how: Working harder – Divide your space into sections, all with clear individual purposes – such as a patio, central seating area, and a decked space. This will make the garden feel bigger because of the multifunctional uses. Dizzy heights – A clever and simple idea is to play with height to add a feeling of space and depth. Use clusters of different pots that contain foliage at varying heights and scales to make the most of the space. Think vertical – Use your vertical wall space for thoughtful planting. A simple yet savvy addition of horizontal fence panels can turn the side of your shed into a decorative living wall to hang small plant pots and baskets.

accessories by putting up some wallmounted shelves, freeing up valuable floor space. Reclaimed scaffolding boards and recycled peg rails are inexpensive solutions. Just hangin’ – The ultimate in alfresco relaxation, a hammock, can be squeezed into the smallest patch and will instantly transform your garden or patio into a chilled-out space. When not in use you can simply take it down and pack it away. Totally tropical – When you have a small internal courtyard or outside space, leave the wow factor to the plants. Look for tropicaal varieties hardy enough to wiithstand the English weather and pllant up your own jungle oasis.

KIDS GROWING STRONG!

T

his summer, it may well be a case of a ‘staycation’ holidayy for your family, so it's time to create some exciting new ways to engage your little ones with the great outdoors — and have fun too! How about ma aking a mud garden or sandpit, a pond in a pot, or a bug box to attract ladybirds, woodlice and, if you’re lucky, the odd mouse or toad? By helping to create an environment that encourages wildlife of all shap pes and sizes, young minds will begin to understand and fully appreciate e nature. There is no better time to introduce kids to the wonderful world of growyour-own. A mouthful of sweet fruit or veg that they have helped to nurture will bring them, and you, priceless pleasure. Micro leaves are all the rage, and are great fun for kids to grow. There are many children’s gardening ranges on offer, making it simple to tend to your beloved fruit, veg and herbs whether you’re a young novice or an experienced green-fingered gardener.

Indoors-outdoors There is a growing trend for blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces; tying both together to create a seamless effect — mentally as well as physically. Here are five ways to embrace this idea and create the perfect indoor-outdoor living space for you, your family and friends.

Accessories – Today, we have a vast choice of things with which to decorate our gardens, much of it very affordable. Outdoor lanterns, dishes, vases and side tables are built to withstand a summer outside. Look to mirror your interior colour scheme and style.

Layout – Take the same amount of time planning the layout of your outdoor space as you do with your interior. Don’t just dump your new outdoor sofa into a corner of the patio — think about things like the view and symmetry.

Textiles – This is not just about pillows! Use your outdoor cushions, rugs, towels, umbrellas and poufs to blend your indoor and outdoor decor, to create the ultimate chic comfort zone.

Colour – In warm weather, people tends to flow in and out of the house with ease. Shouldn’t your colour palette do the same? Tie your outdoor decor to your indoors with pillows, textiles and your furniture material for a seamless design.

Ambiance – Your home is unique to you, so bring that same feel to your outdoor space. If you are romantic, hang string lights on your covered porch. If you love comfort, fill your outdoor space with comfy pillows and plush cushions.

ADVERTISING FEATURE

Protecting those that matter By Michael Duale, Principal of MD Wealth Management

F

ew people find life assurance, critical illness plans and income protection attractive! Unlike a mortgage, investment or pension, there’s nothing aspirational about these household expenses that help to safeguard you and your family financially against a serious illness or death. It’s all too easy to bury your head in the sand and think it will never happen to you, that you can’t afford it, or that your employer will look after you. There are two distinctive types of life assurance and both pay out lump sums on your death – ‘term insurance', which provides cover over a pre-determined period, and ‘whole of life’, which continues until you die. When choosing, it’s important to consider who you’re providing life assurance for, and why, how much is needed and for how long. Check also whether your employer provides a death in service benefit that reduces the need for extra cover. If you want to provide security for your family in the event of your death with a term insurance contract, it may be worth considering ‘family income benefit’ as an alternative. This pays out a regular income until the end of a specified period, rather than a lump sum, and may cost less than you think. Critical illness cover (CIC) pays out a lump sum if you contract any of a specified range of 40 to 50 illnesses and conditions, but these can vary considerably, making it hard to compare like with like. CIC can be sold as an extension to life assurance,

than critical illness, and more likely to need critical illness than life assurance. A survey by the Financial Conduct Authority in October 2017 revealed that just under onethird of the UK adult population has ‘low financial resilience to the risk of death, critical illness or long-term sickness'. Cover becomes cheaper, for example, if you are prepared to extend the period of time before the replacement income kicks in. Short-term income protection contracts that pay out for between two and four years offer another relatively affordable solution. At MD Wealth Management we believe that our ability to tailor solutions to an individual’s needs and attitude, coupled with access to a carefully selected protection panel, can help provide an important financial safety net for your family.

or established as a standalone product, depending on personal circumstances. Income protection, which provides a specified level of regular income if you become unable to work due to sickness or disability, is usually the most expensive choice as it’s most likely to be called upon. It’s also one of the most under-utilised options – because people incorrectly believe they are already covered by their employer in the case of prolonged ill-health. When prioritising protection, you are probably more likely to need income protection

ty y Centre re Honeypot Community lor Bungay’s history tory Local Historian Christopher Reeve steps back in time to exp explore

I

t’s sad that the old Honeypot Community Centre was finally demolished in June — replaced by a splendid new building on the Old Grammar Field — because it had been on the site in Upper Olland Street for about 77 years. It was originally built as a canteen and social club for American Air Force officers and other personnel based at Flixton, now the Aviation Museum. Honeypot Meadow was originally a large area of glebe land attached to Holy Trinity parish rectory, now Holmwood residential home for the elderly. The meadow extended from Upper to Lower Olland Streets, bordered on the south by Bardolph Road. Originally, it provided crops and grazing for beasts for the benefit of the Rector, (or Vicar) until another more convenient house was provided in Trinity Street opposite the churchyard. By the Victorian period, the meadow was used for recreation, sporting events, and grazing horses. Part of the area was rented by W.D. & A.E. Walker, Ltd., owners of the Staithe Navigation, from 1889-1919.

An American serviceman in Earsham Street, circa 1943

Joe Jermy recalled that in the early 20th century, at least one wherry, The Blanche, was built on the Honeypot site, and it was conveyed down to the Staithe river on giant rollers formed of tree trunks. William Walker lived in the house in Lower Olland Street, Dunelm, (now PDQ Media Solutions), and had Folly Lane built alongside Honeypot Meadow to provide a short cut for him when attending services at the Congregational Church (now Emmanuel).

The Honeypot Community Centre soon after opening in 1981

By about 1930, a community building was erected on the meadow, adjacent to Bardolph Road. Known as ‘The Hut’, it was made of corrugated iron, and was rather ugly, but provided spacious accommodation for events on the field, including fetes, auctions, and charity football matches, with dances and concerts in the evenings. For the Queen’s Coronation, in June 1953, a children’s Fancy Dress competition was organised — in torrential rain — and later on the winners were selected and received their prizes in the hall. It was demolished not long afterwards, and the Bungay Bowls Club green was extended, followed by tennis courts, a Police Station, and Olland Court residential homes. Now, the latest stage of its history occurs with the building of four bungalows, and its recreational use has mainly come to an end. Photographs courtesy of Bungay Museum Trust.

FOOD

A feast for foodies! Feastival at The Forum: Saturday 18 to Sunday 19 September. Heritage Open Days Festival: 10-19 September 2021

N

orfolk’s edible heritage and local food and drink producers will be celebrated at a special event at The Forum, Norwich, in September. Feastival at The Forum will take place Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 September 2021 as part of Heritage Open Days. The free-to-attend Feastival will showcase Norfolk-based independent and artisan traders with tasters, promotions and a fine selection of local produce. Throughout the weekend, there will also be delicious street food stalls, talks, and other food related events and activities. Norfolk Heritage Open Days Festival Producer, Katie Ellis, said: “Feastival at The Forum will showcase the very best of

Norfolk’s great culinary heritage. We want to celebrate this heritage and enable visitors to find out all about the fascinating stories from the local producers taking part. From mustard to chocolate, and gin to jam, there’s something for everyone. The Feastival is a new event as part of Heritage Open Days 2021 and we can’t wait to welcome visitors from Norfolk and further afield.” Already confirmed to attend are Dereham-based Essence Foods, producers of Monty’s Mustard, and King’s Lynn based WhataHoot Gin. Sarah, from Essence Foods, said: “The Feastival is a fantastic opportunity to really further the knowledge and understanding of the general public. As the only

single Estate Mustard Powder producers in the UK, we really want to connect the county back together again with its mustard pride and heritage.” Jason and Nicky Crown, from Whatahoot, said: “We are thrilled to be attending Feastival at The Forum as part of Heritage Open Days this year! It is lovely to have a food and drink event which has a real focus on Norfolk’s rich food and farming heritage.” While browsing the stalls, visitors will also be able to learn more about animal breeds unique to Norfolk. Members of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust will be in residence with some furry friends. For more information, go to www.norfolkheritageopendays.co.uk 39

FALCON MEADOW

Petal Power! Laura Myatt, from Falcon Meadow Community Trust, looks at how flowers can help us beat stress

A

fascinating scientific study has found that looking at flowers helps us to recover from psychological stress – and where better to test this theory than our own wildflower haven, Falcon Meadow?! Most people would instinctively say that flowers make them feel better – who doesn’t feel their spirits lifted when the first snowdrop peeps through, or cow parsley lines the verges? A recent study reported in the Journal of Environmental Psychology has taken this notion one step further, and found compelling evidence that the act of viewing a flower has fast and powerful psychological effects. So how did they work that out? Participants in the study were shown two sets of images while their blood pressure, stress levels and brain activity were monitored. The first set of images were highly negative (violence, injuries etc); and the second were termed ‘recovery’ images – a daisy, an abstract flower image, a small cross on a blank background, a blue sky and an office chair…although perhaps this one should have been in the first set! Not surprisingly, after seeing negative images, people’s blood pressure and stress levels increased significantly; and activity within the amygdalahippocampus (an area of the brain associated with negative emotions) also went up. But in 40

stark contrast, the response to the ‘recovery’ images was very clear. The flower image produced the fastest and most pronounced recovery in blood pressure, which often reached lower levels than before. It also produced the biggest reduction in the stress hormone cortisol. Plus, activity within the amygdalahippocampus decreased the most when viewing the flower image. And it didn’t even take long to produce results – improvements were noticeable within three seconds! So, perhaps you didn’t need a scientist to prove it, but just in case you did…it’s official, looking at flowers will make you feel good! And we’d suggest that wildflowers in a stunning location will make you feel even better. So please take advantage of the charm and variety of the wildflowers on Falcon Meadow this summer when they are at their finest. The meadow is yours,

CAKE RECIPE

Mocha Walnut Cake Traybakes are a great way to create plentiful portions of cake with minimum fuss. Cut it into generous cake bars for 14, or into squares for smaller tasty treats! Serves 14

Tip:

640kcal 61g carbs per slice

Keep the cake in an airtight tin in the fridge (because of the mascarpone) and eat within four days

INGREDIENTS Cake: 70g good quality cocoa powder (we use Green & Black’s) 1 heaped teaspoon instant coffee 1 rounded teaspoon bicarbonate of soda 200ml boiling water 4 large eggs 375g soft brown sugar 180ml rapeseed oil 200g self-raising flour 60g walnuts, chopped (optional) Frosting: 275g unsalted butter, very soft 200g mascarpone, room temperature 275g icing sugar 3 heaped teaspoons instant coffee, dissolved in 20ml of boiling water Decoration (optional): 30g dark chocolate (min. 50% cocoa solids) 14 (or 28) walnut halves (optional)

METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 180ºC (160ºC fan). Grease a 30cm x 23cm rectangular baking tin (at least 4cm deep). Whisk the cocoa, coffee and bicarb in the 200ml boiling water until combined, then set aside. In a large bowl,

beat together the eggs, sugar and oil until well combined – about 3 minutes. Add the cocoa mixture and stir until incorporated. 2. Fold in the self-raising flour, and then the walnuts, if using. Pour into the cake tin and bake for 30 to 40 minutes until risen and springy to the touch. Remove from the oven, run a knife around the edge and leave to cool in the tin. 3. To make chocolate bark (optional), melt the chocolate in a microwave/over boiling water, then pour onto a cold flat surface – a granite counter is ideal. Spread to about 3mm thick and leave to set. Once hard, draw a knife blade held in both hands across the chocolate, so that pieces roll or lift up. 4. For the frosting, beat together the butter and mascarpone until

light and fluffy. Add the icing sugar in three batches, then whisk for about five minutes on high speed. Pour in the coffee mix and whisk through. Turn the cake out, trim the edges if you want perfectly regular slices, then spread on the frosting. Decorate with walnut halves and chocolate bark, if using.

The Pennoyer Centre’s volunteer BakeForce make delicious cakes for sale in the café, which won the EDP Norfolk Food & Drink “Best Baking” Award. HEALTH

KICK-START your day!

Getting your day off to the best possible start doesn’t have to be daunting or boring. Adding a few simple changes to your early morning routine will give a huge boost to your health and wellbeing. Wake slowly We know it’s tempting, but reaching for your phone first is not a great habit! Take your time waking up – open your eyes, look around and actively check out how your body is feeling. If you can wake up without an alarm, in tune

with your body’s natural circadian rhythm, so much the better.

will really set you up for the rest of the day.

Hydrate Drinking a glass of water is the perfect way to start your day. Try using a water bottle to remind you to drink regularly and aim to drink at least a couple of litres a day. If you are not a super water fan, try adding a slice of fresh lemon or ginger root, or maybe an organic elderflower cordial, to bring it to life!

Supplement We can’t get all the nutrients we need from diet alone, so consider adding natural supplements to your routine. Simple to take, a quality one-a-day multivitamin and mineral will ensure that essential nutrients are provided for health and immunity. The Solgar range of supplements is great – Solgar Super One a Day is packed with goodness. If you prefer entirely organic, the Wild Organics range is a good choice. Both are quality supplements to provide those important elements that your body needs for fitness and vitality.

Exercise Working out in the morning boosts energy levels and maintains fitness. Avoid workout fatigue by mixing cardio (5km run or fast walk) with weights. Regular exercise has also been shown to benefit mental health. Fuel up A quick coffee will give you a spike in energy, but it’s not enough to keep you going. Get into the habit of eating a sensible breakfast packed with fibre and protein…it

Great service from Janette and her team. My house was sold incredibly quickly, and for a price some way in excess of what I had imagined. The whole process was smoothly managed and tailored to my needs from the first contact. Wholly recommended. Dan I can only give a big “THUMBS UP” to Howards for the way they took over and managed the sale of my mother’s house in Long Stratton. Our agent was Janette Churchill, who whole heartedly embraced us and took us under her wing from the word go. We were kept well informed throughout what was a quite prolonged sale, and Janette was a real pleasure to talk to. Many thank to you and your team, for taking the sale and making it a pleasure rather than the chore it had become. Peter It was refreshing to be working with an agent that had clearly taken the time to learn all of the relevant information of the property that was for sale. Too often an agent will simply be there just to open the door and then be unable to answer questions. Janette was excellent and really professional. Great job. Paul

HEALTH

A plant-based powerhouse for skin rejuvenation

B

akuchiol. What...never heard of it? Well you soon will. It’s all over the skincare industry like a rash, or something to get rid of a rash, and making big waves as a competitor to our favourite friend, retinol. Retinol has been considered the gold standard in anti-aging skincare for literally decades. It’s the go-to product for dermatologists, skincare therapists and formulators when they want to make a significant and visible difference to their clients’ skin. But retinol can, particularly when used incorrectly, result in peeling, redness and is a cause of photo-sensitivity. Bakuchiol, however, does a very similar job to retinol but without these unpleasant side effects. Let’s call this new cosmetic ingredient an ally, rather than a competitor. In addition, Bakuchiol is much more stable than retinol, which means it keeps its potency and effectiveness for a longer

period of time. Retinol degrades quickly in the presence of air and sunlight, which is why you’ll find good sources of retinol are always packaged in airtight, dark containers. Proper packaging is also part of the cost. Bakuchiol doesn’t react quite so much to atmospheric exposure, but it does degrade, eventually, over time. But why are they so similar? Bakuchiol is a plant-derived phytochemical which shares the same gene expression (the process by which specific genes are activated to produce a required protein) as retinol. This means theyy both have the ability to regulate the production of collagen and elastin; the essential elements of thicker, bouncy youthful skin. So, like human relatives, they share common properties.

Bakuchiol’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, among others, make it an even more perfect partner for retinol fans. As well as your night-time vitamin A application, pop on Bakuchiol oil or cream in the morning for a double whammy of active ingredients. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily to protect the results from these impressive ingredients and you’re good to go with a great regime for all skin types.

CANINE BEHAVIOUR

Parlez Vous POOCH?! Blogger and qualified ‘Dog Listener’ Julia Collins explains how hand signals and a whistle can help with canine communication

H

ow many of you have trained your dog to respond to hand signals as well as voice commands? Not many, I bet, and even fewer bother with a whistle. When you set about forging a bond with your dog, it makes great sense to use as many means of communication as possible.

Many of us will have experienced trying to converse with someone who doesn't share our particular language. We use our hands, often acting out that which we do not have the vocabulary for. So why not take the same approach with our dogs? Imagine this; if we are desperate to ask a burning request of our pet, wouldn’t

we turn ourselves inside out to get what we need, giving the situation our all in terms of emotion, intent and ingenuity?

on you – the leader. The hand signals to use occur to us so instinctively that they barely need mentioning. ‘Come’ – opening your welcoming arms wide (as we do for children) works a treat, and is nice and clear from a distance. ‘Stay’ – one outstretched arm, open palm towards dog.

So, when gazing into those liquid brown eyes, try seeing yourself as one of two equals. Then, bound by affection and ready to move forward, dissolve complications and difficulties as you go. Adding hand signals to your training commands clarifies and emphasises your instruction and proves a valuable addition to your canine tool box if distance or windy weather prevents your voice from carrying. When your dog cannot hear your voice, he will still look for your signals. Put it this way – if he can’t hear you, and you haven’t factored in any other communication system, he won’t be looking for anything from you! While you are on the job, use a whistle. Another weather buster and a great attention grabber! You can soon polish up a sequence: whistle to gain attention, followed by signal and voice to forge a strong join-up, thus keeping the focus firmly

‘Down’ – indicate just that with downward sweep of the arm ‘Sit’ – upwards from the forearm with a flat palm. Then add your whistle. Multiple peeps as you call your dog in. One long blast for sit at a distance, and I use one short peep for sit and two for down, but you can develop your own system.

Parlez Vous POOCH?! articles are also available on the Oracle, an audio information magazine for visually impaired listeners, which is part of Wymondham and Attleborough Talking Newspapers. To access all the Talking Newspaper recordings, go to www.watn.org.uk

BEETROOT

Beet yourself up! C

olourful, sweet and earthy, what’s not to love about beautiful beetroot? This delicious ruby red root veg packs a powerful nutritional punch and is super versatile; roasted, ready cooked, pickled or raw, it’s a purple superstar that’s perfect with strong flavours and adds unbeatable moistness to chocolate cake! Here are 6 easy ways beetroot can jazz up your menu: How about hummus? Drain a 250g can of chickpeas, combine with 180g cooked beetroot and the zest and juice of 1 lemon and blitz in a food processor for 1 minute. Add 1 clove of minced garlic, seasoning to taste, 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil and blitz until smooth. Stir through 1 tbsp natural yogurt and get dipping! Crunch time! Coleslaw is so easy, and you can make it up as you go along, depending on your taste, but here’s the general idea; grate raw beetroot and d carrots, ad dd th hinlly sliced red onion, mix with mayo and low fat plain yoghurt, seasoning to taste, a bit of chilli and ginger if you like a kick…and enjoy!

You old smoothie! Nutritious, delicious and great for heart health. Peel and roughly chop 2 small raw beetroot and 1 small peeled, quartered and cored apple. Put them in a blender with 50g blueberries, 1 tbsp grated ginger and 300ml water and blitz until sm mooth. Cheers!

Take 4 small cooked chopped beetroot, 1 peeled and finely chopped apple, 50g halved red grapes, 1 finely chopped red chilli, 50g light brown soft sugar and 3 tbsp balsamic vinegar. Simmer everything together for 30-35 mins until jammy, adding a little water if needed, and leave to cool.

Hot pink mess! Kids will love this mashed potato with a twist, because it’s so pretty! Peel 400g mashing potatoes, cut into chu unks and boil in salted water until tender. Add 4 plain cooked beetroot to the water and simmerr for 2 minutes more. Drain, add 4tb bsp creme fraiche, salt and pepper and mash until smooth.

Summer lovin’ Rev up your summer salads and add a dash of culinary colour with roasted, sliced or grated beetroot. Its earthy sweetness is perfect with strong, salty flavours like feta cheese or mackerel and it will add warmth and depth to any dish. It also works well with sliced oranges, walnuts, bulb fennel, lentils, strong spices and cooling avocado and yoghurt.

We’re jammin! This sweet, tangy relish is a grreat partner for cheese.

Walking for Health The Framinghams REVIEWED BY DOUGIE DINGWALL VOLUNTEER CO-ORDINATOR AT CENTRAL NORFOLK WALKING FOR HEALTH Route by Rhona Shuttleworth Route checked and photography by Dougie Dingwall

02. At the end of the woodland path turn right into Gull Lane. After 50 metres, turn left at the wooden finger post, cross the wooden planks over a ditch and walk up the path with the hedge on your left. At the end of the path turn left onto Yelverton Road. Walk past the first right of way to Aldis Farm Shop & Café. Just past the Water Tower, turn right at the finger post along a drive towards a house called The Driftway. 03. Follow this drive to the big houses and then veer right and then left to a gate. The vehicle track then becomes a footpath between hedges. When the footpath reaches the kissing gate on the left of the path, continue straight on in the same direction until you reach Wheel Road. Turn right and continue past Reeder’s Lane on the left and past the speed signs. 04. Just after the bend in the road, after ‘The New House’ and the white railings, take the public footpath on the left. Continue up this track where there is a field junction, bear right just before the wooden post and immediately turn right in the next field to walk on the well-trodden path along the field edge. 05. Near the end of the field turn right, go across two blank bridges and continue on a path straight across the field until you reach another plank bridge and a kissing gate. Go across the field to a second kissing gate and turn right down a wooded path. The modern church will be on your left.

Starting Point: St Andrews Church, The Street, Framingham Pigot NR14 7QH Grid Reference: OS Map 237/ OL 40: TG 27782 03614 Walk Length (Miles / Km): 4.45 miles / 7.2 km

Directions 01. Keeping the Church on your left, follow the shingle track towards a cottage. If the Church looks familiar outside, Drone footage of it appeared in Bridget Jones’s Baby. Veer left before the cottage, taking the track at the wooden finger post. Follow the footpath around the trees on the right into a wood.

06. Leave the public right of way at the church entrance and continue straight onto Upgate Road, past White House Gardens on the right to the next junction and turn right. This is also called Upgate, but becomes Hall Road after passing Burgate Lane on the right. Walk past Fallowfield on the left and turn left into Long Road, then cross the road to the footpath on the left. 07. Continue past St Anne’s Road, staying on Long Road. Take the first right turn into Spur Lane, which is beside the only house on the right. At the T-junction turn right into Pigot Lane. Take the next right into The Street at the Framingham Pigot village sign. Walk down The Street back to St Andrew’s Church on the right. 59

DAYS OUT

Where shall we go? Gill Starkie and Karen Fisher, who call themselves ‘STARFISH Investigations’ review the most exciting places to visit in Norfolk.

Gill Starkie (right) and Karen Fisher

Beautiful Blakeney

Back To The Garden, great food

W

e are two friends who live in Forncett St Mary and St Peter and we love to explore, have adventures and enjoy special days out. Our very high standards include ‘The Sausage Roll Test!’ – must be firm in the hand and HOT. And fizz – must be COLD. Our first review takes us to the North Norfolk Coast, starting with a walk in the pretty village of Heydon (NR11 6AD). Here you will find a lovely tea shop, a very good pub and a few small shops. But we just walked to the big house and enjoyed the beautiful surrounding countryside. Back to the car and on to ‘Back to the Garden’ in Letheringsett

(NR25 7JJ), lots on offer, but no sausage rolls!! However, we did enjoy a lunch of Halloumi Fingers and a delicious salad. We sat in the garden where there are plenty of tables, and there’s also lots of room undercover and inside. A very good menu and cakes galore, plus some XXL Scones. The produce market and butchery are well worth a visit. Next – a quick stop off to say hello to ‘Normal for Norfolks’ Desmond, at Wiveton (NR25 7TE), and then on to Blakeney (NR25 7NE), where we joined the North Norfolk Coastal path for a walk and an ice cream. Fabulous views across the waterways and the marshes; the walk to the ‘point’ will never disappoint and seals can be viewed all year round. Plus, it’s a great place to familiarise yourself with the local godwits and even a shank or two.

As the sun begins its farewell, we need to be thinking about the journey home. But not before we drive further along the coast road, through all the pretty villages, to Brancaster (PE31 8BY). Here you will find the White Horse pub, famous for its fantastic seafood and a very fine wine list, plus fresh and simple lunches and dinners. Booking definitely advised. Great views across the marshes and waterways, sit inside, on the terrace, or, like us, in the garden to watch the sunset. We didn’t have the food, or the sunset, but it would have been remiss of us not to toast a perfect day with a glass of cold-ish fizz. Oh dear! Time to go home…as the sun disappeared behind Scolt Head Island Reserve – a wonderful view from the pub terrace – we left the beauty of the North to return to our equally lovely South. 61

NATURE

In praise of sulphur clover By Helen Baczkowska, Conservation Officer at Norfolk Wildlife Trust

I

f you were asked to choose a wild flower that represents the Claylands of Suffolk and South Norfolk, what would you select? Perhaps ox eye daisies or the magenta spikes of green winged orchids? Maybe it would be the joy of spring primroses along ditches, or cowslips growing on field edges in early summer. Each of these would be a good candidate, but for me it would be the creamy yellow sulphur clover. In bright sun in June or July, sulphur clover lives up to its name, with vivid flowers that are larger than the common white and red clovers. As the seeds ripen, the flowers fade to brownish orange and, once you know what you are looking for, the leaves can be spotted for most of the year. Just like other clovers, they are ‘trifoliate’, meaning the leaves are split into three parts, but unlike other British clovers, they are grey-green and downy to the touch. Like many other plants, sulphur clover tells a story of soil and geology and human history. It likes to grow on the chalky boulder-clays of the Claylands,

where long ago glaciers dumped ground-up debris in low hills, although it’s also found on a few outcrops of chalk soils in North Norfolk. Wherever it grows, it is, like the orchids and cowslips, a clue to the location of old meadows and commons that were once cut for hay or grazed by farm animals. In the past century, many grasslands have been converted to arable fields or lost to development. Even those that remain can be affected by cutting at the wrong time of year, by

spraying with herbicides and shading when scrub grows. Sulphur clover is now listed as a nationally scarce plant, with South Norfolk and Suffolk considered by conservationists its stronghold in England. In South Norfolk, sulphur clover is mostly found on a series of Roadside Nature Reserves, cared for by Norfolk County Council. However, even these are vulnerable to spray drift from nearby fields, compaction by vehicles and fertiliser run-off. Over a decade ago, Henry

Walker from the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group and I became concerned about the plight of sulphur clover and started harvesting the seed by hand and by cutting ‘green hay’; unlike hay for animals, this is not dried in the sun, but scattered on fields to spread seed. From the seeds, we have created new meadows across South Norfolk.

Other wild flowers spread through the hay include pinkflowered spiny restharrow, yellow rattle and the aniseed-scented pepper saxifrage. In summer butterflies and bees enjoy the nectar of the flowers, while birds like linnets and goldfinches feed on the seeds. One of the best places to see sulphur clover is the Roadside

Nature Reserve on Wood Lane, Pulham Market. Please park considerately, be careful walking in the lane if you do spot the flowers, I think you will agree that it’s a worthy wild emblem of the area.
