This year, Everyone Active launched its national Community Health and Wellbeing Strategy, with the aim to meet the needs of individual communities through programmes that support people to be physically active, and to feel happy and healthy.

Caring about sport and leisure

The initiative, run by awardwinning operator Everyone Active, in partnership with East Suffolk Council, aims to reduce the barriers between children and young people participating in sport and physical activity, and will give them free access to a range of facilities, depending on their age, including gym, swim, soft play and group exercise.

According to latest figures from the Department for Education for children looked after (CLA) in England, the number of children in care is at an all-time high, at more than 80,000 children or 67 in every 10,000.

NHS on show

Organised by Norfolk Community Health and Care NHS Trust (NCH&C), the free-to-attend public exhibition runs from Wednesday 26 October to Tuesday 2 November and will feature a display of paintings, photography and artwork telling the story of community healthcare in Norfolk.

GOOD NEWS

Laurel and Thuja plicata are fast-growing and therefore create screening relatively quickly, but they require more ongoing maintenance to keep them in check, as opposed to Portuguese laurel, yew or holly, which are all fine choices for more modest spaces.

This type of hedge is best planted ‘bare root’ (dug from the field and transplanted while the plants are dormant during the colder months, November to the end of March). Most varieties will be available to order now, or container-grown choices are available all year round. Autumn

planting gives plants the longest chance of getting their roots down into the soil to help them get established, before the dryness of possible summer heatwaves means constant watering.

GARDENS The Garden Enclosure

reduce wind speeds and provide food and habitat for countless species of wildlife – all with a positive carbon footprint!

Autumn is approaching, bringing with it the risk of storms and gales, which can play havoc in a garden as gusty winds smash pots, snap supports, scatter debris and destroy old fences, but out of destruction comes opportunity! Pots can be replaced – this time choose wide bases for more stability and use a heavy loam-based compost such as John Innes for added weight and improved growing conditions.

A hedge is simply a row of plants either of the same type or a mixture of several species.

Check stakes for rot and try to be more tidy around your plot during autumn, and as for the collapsed fence, it’s decision time – do you replace it with a new one or plant a natural hedge instead?

23

Hedges are a simple and cost-effective answer to defining boundaries. If they are grown well they are able to contain (or exclude) animals and people,

A traditional hedge would have been made up of native trees with one type being dominant, usually hawthorn or blackthorn, intermixed with others such as hazel, dogwood, field maple, dog rose, spindle and guelder rose, depending on local availability.

on windfalls, especially during harsh weather. But the more unusual visitors will also find their way to these winter stores, including fieldfares, redwings and waxwings – if you leave berries on the trees.

With this extremelysummer'shotweather, very little lawn mowing has been done on the scorched grass, and in my garden the fruit trees are dropping apples and pears all over the place. Now we're in the cooler autumn and winter period, it's a good idea to let the lawn recover by not mowing the grass and leaving all that fallen fruit to supply winter food for your garden birds.

If you have a garden with fruit trees growing in the lawn, allowing the windfalls to stay on the grass over the winter will help the wild birds that visit your garden. Although many fallen fruit go soft and unsightly, they are a winter bonus to resident and migratory birds who will eventually eat every last scrap of the fruit, leaving the lawn clear for the first mow in the New Year.

Spread the leek love!

How you cook leeks is important to get the most out of them. Three of the best ways are:

Roast – halve lengthways, chop into 1-inch chunks, and wash thoroughly. Then, toss them in olive oil, salt and pepper and bake at 220oc for about 20 minutes, or until tender.

Sauté – chop as above, warm a glug of olive oil in a large skillet

Grill – slice in half lengthwise, rinse and dry well, and grill both sides on medium-high until they’re well charred and tender.

over a medium heat, add the leeks and cook, stirring occasionally, until they soften, about 5 minutes.

3 tablespoons chopped toasted hazelnuts

3. Dollop into your preferred shape on the tray – these quantities will make a 23cm circle. Bake for 70 - 90 minutes until crisp on the outside and it just peels away from the paper. Cool in the oven. Top with whipped cream, the roasted figs and hazelnuts, then drizzle with the pink syrup from the dish.roastingServe as soon possible.as

3 tablespoons runny honey

- Separate each egg into a small bowl. If ANY yolk gets in the white, do not use it.

2. Make the pavlova. Preheat the oven to 120ºC. Cover a large baking sheet with baking parchment. In a large bowl, whisk the egg whites until combined, then add the cream of tartar and whip to soft peaks. Whisking slowly, add the sugar one tablespoon at a time, until thick and shiny. Fold in the hazelnuts.

Plain – omit the hazelnuts. Ginger and pineapple – fold 2 tablespoons of finely chopped crystallised ginger into the plain mix before baking and serve with pineapple scattered over the cream. Chocolate – fold 3 tablespoonfuls of cocoa powder into the plain mix. Top the cream with grated chocolate or chunks of your family’s favourite chocolate bars.

Horticultural inspiration, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and much-loved presenter, Alan Titchmarsh, discusses putting early preparations in place for the cold season.

then, winter is coming! Okay, so it’s a way off yet, but getting our plans together early for what we want to see in our gardens in winter is actually a really good idea, even if the whole discussion feels a little, well, ‘out of season’, you might say!

And you can never ignore hardy, tough and tasty onions (and shallots); easy to plant, brilliantly versatile, and incredibly resourceful in the soil. Onions have a very long growing season

The notion of the winter vegetable is one we all stand by – rough, rustic, wholesome and happy. They are the meal mainstays of a season in which we want to be inside, wrapped up warm, with the products of our labour in front of us.

So

GREENFINGERS… with Alan Titchmarsh

Think about kale, brussels sprouts, parsnips, and who can resist the Jerusalem artichoke? These are all easy to get into the ground, simple to maintain, and will flourish as the year goes on, ready for picking just when the temperatures begin to drop sharply in November.

GARDENS

In this case, definitely consider spinach, typically planted at the start of autumn, and carrots too. We associate carrots with sugary, summer flavours, but planted in November, and with a bit of protection, the Adelaide carrot flourishes across the colder months for an early spring treat.

You also need to start thinking about early spring vegetables –they’ll be longer in the ground but still working their magic through the winter months.

Leeks – a must on a winter plot – offer volume, flavour and spiciness right up until the soil freezes solid. Winter salads; rows of Lambs Lettuce, Land Cress and mustard, will need some protection from the elements, but once in the ground they are resilient and happy to be picked across the colder months, where they’ll regrow and keep the supply to your lunch table constant.

ART

The first thing that strikes me about Polly Fern’s exquisite ceramics is the elegance. There is charm, even humour, but everything is delicately balanced, with clarity and a seemingly effortless sense of design.

Finely spun figures hold delicate dogs, skilfully drawn with a flick of a brush; leaves and branches entwine around stylish houses, and flowers spill around edges to frame the scenes; rhapsodic birds sit alongside heraldic lions and fleetingTheresquirrels.isadeceptive simplicity, and an almost folk-art naïvety that combines beautifully with the sometimes sophisticated purposes of her work – ornate vases, decorative plates, richly painted lampshades. There is so much of Polly in these designs, from her adored whippets, who in real life are usually found sleeping

under the studio desk, to her fascination with period ceramics, and Georgian homes.

She ended up working in a ceramics studio, learning new skills and techniques. She then began to release small, unique collections through her on-line shop, and placed a few pieces in galleries. A stint with Homes & Antiques magazine, illustrating maps for a monthly column, provided initial income, but Polly always believed she could succeed. “I knew I could, from the first time I sold a painting.”

firing ceramics goes wrong so often, you can’t be precious,” explains Polly. Part of the excitement is the possibility of not knowing the outcome. Things may go wrong, but the end result often has its own beauty.

Chatting in her garden studio – shelves lined with plain vases and plates awaiting decorations and a kiln in the corner – it’s immediately clear that here is someone who absolutely loves her work. Living in the country, creating ceramics might seem a romantic idyll, but there are many frustrations and disasters along the“Becauseway.

Polly now lives with her partner, Richard, in a lovely Georgian cottage on the Norfolk/Suffolk border. She sees it as a blank canvas for her work. “When I couldn’t find the right wallpaper, I thought: “I’ll just make it!” Polly then taught herself to create repeats for wallpaper and ended up selling the result on her website. She also created her own tiles for a new kitchen. “Artists always have the most interesting homes,” she laughs.

I ask Polly a little more about the processes involved, and she shares some sketchbooks. “It’s not just making, decorating, glazing, firing, but also planning,

gardener. Polly initially specialised in Illustration at Norwich School of Art. But after trying an evening course in ceramics it was love at first sight. “I’ve always been focussed on making as well as drawing and painting – something I find very satisfying. When you are illustrating books it can only really be seen on paper. But I wanted my work to be seen in different areas; in homes, in gardens.”

4. Next, add the chicken stock pot and the tomato juice (with gravy browning if using). Shake the pan to gently work it in and turn the chicken pieces until fully coated in the liquid. Bring slowly to the boil to allow the chicken stock pot to dissolve, then add the tarragon and simmer for 5 minutes.

to the frying pan, placing them under the chicken so they cook.

3 tbsp tarragon, chopped

250g button mushrooms, finely sliced

1 chicken stock pot

3(100g)1/2tbsp brandy, optional

2. Put the floured chicken pieces into the hot olive oil, skin side down, and fry without moving the pieces until golden brown underneath. This should take around 8-10 minutes. Next, turn the chicken and fry until browned on the other side. Finely chop the shallots and add

2 tomatoes, skinned, de-seeded and finely diced

1. Gently heat half the oil in a large, heavy-based frying pan. The oil should be hot, but not so hot that it scorches the floured chicken. Next, spread a layer of flour on a plate or a tray, and coat the chicken pieces evenly and thoroughly, shaking off any excess flour. This will add a golden brown colour to the cooked chicken and help thicken the sauce.

Marco Pierre White’s Chicken Chasseur

2 tbsp olive oil

3. If you’re using brandy, pour it in around the edge of the pan so that it runs underneath the chicken. Cook for 2-3 minutes to allow the alcohol to evaporate. Add the wine in the same way, and cook for a further 2-3 minutes to allow the alcohol to evaporate and reduce the acidity.

2 shallots, very finely chopped

INGREDIENTS

5. While the chicken is simmering, take a separate frying pan and heat the remaining olive oil. Slice the mushrooms and add to the second pan, then fry for 3-5 minutes.

2 tbsp parsley, chopped

RECIPE45RECIPE

1 tbsp plain flour, for coating

Serves 4

Either 1 small chicken, cut into 8 pieces, or 8 chicken thighs, or 8 chicken breast fillets (skin on or off)

7 tbsp white wine

2 1/2 cups tomato juice (with an optional touch of gravy browning added for extra colour)

The fearsome yet fantastically flamboyant Marco Pierre White shares his mouthwatering recipe for Chicken Chasseur.

6. Next, add in the parsley and diced tomato, shaking the pan to mix everything in well. Spoon the mushrooms, parsley and tomato over the chicken and garnish with sprigs of parsley, then serve.

Green hay refers to the process of cutting hay from a local wildlife-rich site and taking the cut hay to a new site to help create new wildlife-friendly areas. A local site is best, as it preserves the local genes and the habitat requirements of the wildflowers are likely to be met if they are sourced nearby.

Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s Wilder Connections project has been busy this year helping communities to support wildlife across the South Norfolk Claylands. At Burston and Shimpling we have been undertaking simple botanical surveys of playing fields, which had been left for No Mow May. We have found a surprising diversity of plant species and these will be monitored over time while the meadow establishes. The hay has been recently cut by volunteers using scythes following training on our ‘Introduction to scything

The receiving site is prepared in advance by cutting the grass and then disturbing the ground

Making ‘green hay’ for wildlife diversity

We are also adding green hay to establish a meadow in Stoke Holy Cross, officially known as Jubilee Meadows, and will be working with the parish council and local community to enhance the meadow for wildlife. They are also planting some trees, a new hedgerow and a community orchard in the green space. As well as being great for wildlife, this area will provide local residents with a beautiful area to walk and picnic and the

Artists from across South Norfolk will welcome visitors into their studios as part of Norfolk Open Studios, which will take place from 24 September to 9 October.

The free event will see more than 290 artists taking part throughout the county, and in South Norfolk more than 43 artists will be sharing and selling work from their studios, garages, spare rooms, garden rooms, community spaces and schools.

visitors will be able to view recent paintings, limited-edition prints and some earlier works. I work in a purpose-built studio which is part of my home – converted from an old cart lodge barn. There are greetings cards depicting over thirty of my paintings, as well as unframed limited-edition prints in a browser. The kettle is never far away and I'm always happy for visitors to call in for a chat and a cuppa.”ArtTrails will also be in place across the county, allowing visitors to enjoy several studios and local attractions in one day. Throughout the duration of Norfolk Open Studios, artists will be offering additional events, demonstrations and workshops to share their skills and practice. In South Norfolk there will be a have-a-go day in Diss, a landscape in acrylics workshop and a drawing workshop.

Brochures can be picked up from Tourist Information Centres, libraries, cafés and various art venues across Norfolk.

In South Norfolk, the Langley School is taking part with an exhibition of current work from both the Senior and Prep Schools, set in the Senior School Art Department. One art trail organised by artists – the South Norfolk Art Trail – will take in five artists throughout Framingham Earl, Stoke Holy Cross and Shotesham.

All details, including studio opening days, directions, art trails and additional events and demonstrations, can be found in the Norfolk Open Studios brochure and on the event’s website norfolkstudios.org.uk

“The artists look forward to it so much as well, they really enjoy the opportunity to invite people into their workspaces and to have a chat about their work. There are some amazing Norfolk schools taking part, the work they create is extraordinary. It’s well-worth including some of these schools in your studio visits.”

The 12th Man Radio Show, which is dedicated to helping men talk openly about mental health by making it part of our everyday conversation, has been renewed by Future Radio following the show’s success.

Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45 and Norfolk has one of the highest suicide rates in the UK. The struggles many of us faced during the pandemic brought mental health into even sharper focus, prompting the radio station and the 12th Man campaign to come together to produce a show dedicated to getting men talking about their mentalNickhealth.Little, Director and Co-founder of the 12th Man Campaign, says: "The 12th Man is a bit like a football crowd –when a team is playing well and winning, the crowd is happy and creates a positive atmosphere. However, the team actually needs the 12th Man more when it’s struggling for form, and the 12th Man Radio Show helps people to support their friends,

The newcomer is often young, and I think their infant demeanour activates a caring and gentle attitude in the older, established animal. We added a tiny kitten to our twoDobermann household with minimal kerfuffle. I ‘gave’ the kitten to the female dog to look after, praising her greatly for the maternal attitude she exhibited right from the start, and not particularly fussing the kitten, who was happy enough to be part of proceedings anyway!

63 CANINE BEHAVIOUR

Many of us have cats and dogs that cohabit peacefully. It can be something almost taken for granted. Perhaps humans have just cleverly followed their instincts when putting the two species together!

Whether introducing a kitten to an incumbent dog, or a dog or puppy to the resident feline, thought and patience make for success. It’s important that each pet has a place of comfort and peace to retreat to, somewhere containing their bed, water, food, toys and, in the case of a cat – a litter tray. Each then has a sanctuary.Beforebringing the two animals together, it can be really useful to introduce their respective scents. This is easy, simply wipe a soft cloth over the head of the cat and then leave the cloth in the dog’s area. Repeat the exercise, stroking over the

CANINE BEHAVIOUR

Blogger and qualified ‘Dog Listener’ Julia Collins advises how we can help our cats and dogs live together in harmony.

Before too long it should be possible to let the pair get closer. Keep the dog on a lead and never pick up the cat to bring it towards the dog, as panicky spitting and scratching could easily ensue. You will be so familiar with itenergylanguagepet’sestablishedyourbodyandthatshouldn’t be difficult to progress.evaluate

Be especially aware if your dog is a hunting breed. Sudden movements from the cat can easily trigger their desire to chase – something to be nipped in the bud, as once activated the impulse can be hard to subdue. Likewise staring – distract your dog away from the cat and reward for calm behaviour.

In later years, we introduced a terrier puppy to a year-old Ragdoll cat. The similarly sized pair soon became inseparable, the cat’s supine ‘whatever’ attitude allowing a ‘rough and tumble’ sibling relationship right from the outset.

Make the intro brief and give rewards for calm behaviour. Repeat these short meetings frequently. Keep the dog on a lead and allow the cat to regard the dog from a distance. When you eat highly processed foods, and consume large amounts of sugar, you actually feed the gut’s unfriendly microbes and create an unhealthy imbalance in your gut.

The findings published in a peer reviewed journal Psychological Medicine add to an already growing body of evidence confirming a two-way link between our gut and our brain. This research strengthens previous work indicating that our gut bacteria can have a very significant impact on our mood and ability to function well emotionally.Atotalof 71 adults aged between 18 to 55 were recruited for the randomised double-blind placebo-controlled study. Tests carried out at the start of the trial indicated they were all suffering

An Oxford University study has revealed that taking a multi strain natural probiotic – friendly gut bacteria – daily, for at least four weeks, can reduce depression scores, boost concentration, improve emotional reactions and even enhance your ability to read facial expressions in others.

Mosquitoes, but away from the dazzling sparks of Tinseltown’s arrogance, Colman has found herself reconnecting with the simple, organic, rustic pleasures and projects, including a spate of independent films.

“I think we all move through various stages in our lives and the worst thing you can ever do is stay in the same space continually,” she says. “I’m one of those curious characters who takes those sorts of things to extremes – I yearn for the next project, the next setting; yet when I get there I’m in it all of a few minutes before plotting another stepOfelsewhere.”course, her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown gave her perhaps a pinnacle role that may, in future, define this brilliant talent more than any other.

The route to a wider audience took Colman on the same path as older dramatists and comedians Hugh Laurie, Tony Slattery and Sue Perkins; and yet despite excelling in Rev, Broadchurch, The Night Manager and The Favourite, the 48-year-old actress has arguably spent the last few years coming full circle.

There is a problem, though. “I’m not good at taking praise,”

Not only did she reunite herself with the simple pleasures of playing live to an audience, during a wildly successful National Theatre run as Jenny in

Colman, who recently moved from London back to Norfolk, returns this year in Secret Invasion, a Disney+ TV miniseries based on the Marvel Comics storyline of the same name. She is married to actor Ed Sinclair and has three children.

she admits. “It feels very awkward to me and every time someone fawns over my work I can’t help but think there are millions of people all across the country doing jobs that are infinitely more important than mine.”

Caught in the Act

Norfolk-born actress, Olivia Colman, tells Village People why the need to be busy far outweighs a desire to be popular.

Olivia Colman’s career trajectory has seen the true evolution of an actress, almost back to the point where she started.

Perhaps it's that grounding that presents the actress with an ability to connect with an audience in a way that circumnavigates gender, social status and “Ultimately, age. working makes me happy,” she admits, “although I do struggle to say no. That people still want to watch me is the biggest thrill and, of course, the greatest mystery!”

The actress set out on her path to dramatic excellence at the much-renowned Footlights Dramatic Club at Cambridge University. There, she shared the stage with the likes of David Mitchell, Richard Ayoade and Peter Serafinowicz, the latest in a long line of undergraduates to have trodden the boards.

THE SunspotsEFFECTS

The perils of blotchy skin, and what you can do to improve your complexion.

BEAUTY 78

Although men can suffer from this condition, it’s often caused by hormonal changes – specifically fluctuations in oestrogen – that occur during pregnancy or the use of birth control. Frequently forming on the forehead, cheeks, nose and upper lip, these swathes of brown or greyish pigmentation can be a real cause of distress due to their size and location on the face.

Melasma

Uneven skin tone is something that will affect many of us at some point in our lives, and yet it’s a beauty bug we can fix with careful attention.

Flaky or scaly patches of skin may be easier to fix than hyperpigmentation, but they are harder to conceal with make-up and can be exacerbated by too many products. Pollution, dehydration, fatigue, or a general imbalance within your body can all cause skin to flare-up in this manner.

BlotchWatch

Any beauty buff knows that too much sun exposure can cause real problems for their skin, yet despite knowing that any kind of tan is a negative response to UV rays, that golden glow still proves hard to resist! Sunspots are brown patches that almost look like a cluster of freckles, and while they aren’t dangerous, they aren’t great either.

Dry Skin

It’s vital to adapt your skin routine as you age, and as a rule this means investing in products of increasing quality as the years go by. Dry skin benefits from creams and serums which are rich in oils or lipids and contain ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or glycerine, whereas oily skin reacts better with water-based blends.

Whether you want plumper, smoother, luminous, or more even skin, it always helps to boost from the inside out. There are many things that can contribute to a glowing complexion. Green tea is high in antioxidants, citrus offers a vitamin C boost, green vegetables contain vitamins B and E, while oily fish boasts omega 3.

Exfoliation is a vital tool in your fight against uneven skin, as it sloughs away the dead, dry skin cells which cause a dull complexion and prevents creams and serums

Hydroquinone, mulberry, kojic acid and glutathione are the ingredients to look out for when it comes to selecting a serum or cream

A great method of applying DMAE in clinic is using it for skin needling. This sounds dramatic, but just means the therapist uses an electronic ‘pen’ device with tiny needles to break the surface of the skin. This allows the product to penetrate and get to work immediately. The result is a smoother, firmer and plumper skin, with cumulative effects after a second treatment.

An A-Z introduction to cosmetic ingredients – D is for DMAE (dim-ethyl-amino-ethanol) D

In brief, this ingredient reduces the appearance, depth and length of fine lines and wrinkles and reduces or prevents DNA damage. When ingested, it can increase creativity, memory, concentration and improve energy. Remember that a good quality source is essential and more is not necessarily better.

clinical study, 3% DMAE facial gel applied daily for 16 weeks proved to be safe and efficacious. It reduced forehead lines and fine wrinkles, improved lip shape and fullness and the overall appearance of ageing skin – and the results were still there two weeks later.

First, if you've heard of fish referred to as brain food, you can thank DMAE. This substance is naturally produced in the brain, but DMAE is also present in anchovies, salmon, and sardines. DMAE in skincare, however, is used as a firming and antiwrinkle treatment. It’s a natural compound in the human body and synthetically reproduced for industry. The tensile effect of DMAE is due to the stimulation of fibroblasts; cells that produce connective tissue such as collagen.

Yet sometimes we are all guilty of obsessing over the negative elements, while failing to recognise good opportunities elsewhere. It’s strange that mobile phones are such an integral part of our lives, yet many of us take for granted the competitiveness of the industry and don’t realise where we can be making savings.

In an era of prices rising inexplicably across the board in other elements of our life, the time is now to start working the equation back in our favour, so have a look at your bill, survey the competition and start the conversation!

Put the flour into the bowl of a food processor, add the butter in large pieces and process for a few seconds to the consistency of fine breadcrumbs. Add the sugar and the egg yolk and process until the mixture starts to come together to form a dough.

I recently rented a cottage with a friend on the Wiveton Hall estate, owned by Desmond MacCarthy of Normal For Norfolk TV renown. Portraits of Tibet by Diane Barker (Birds Eye Books, Graffeg). It’s photographic portraits of the nomad people of eastern Tibet, with commentary. I feel such an identification with these people and their Buddhist philosophy and such admiration for the author, who is a nomad herself.

I also love Beccles – where my daughter lives – and Bungay. They seem to be in a time warp and have escaped

What do you do when you’re not working?

Are you working on a new book at the moment?

During the pandemic I felt children’s books were irrelevant and I lost the playfulness needed to write them. Instead I wrote Facebook posts about Norwich in lockdown. I simply had to pay attention to this profoundly historic event.

Some say that the best start in life for a children’s writer is a difficult childhood. They grow into adults who write stories as a soothing balm. My best-selling title, Tell Me Something Happy Before I Go to Sleep, is about waking up in the morning and finding everything in place. It’s still in print after 25 years and was written at a time of great loss. All stories start with a problem. On my writing courses I called this ’Spinning your straw into Gold’.

I'm pleased to say that I have recently written a new picture book text. Children's books are important because they are formative. It makes me happy to write them and to know that they add to the happiness of children all over the world.

We get up close and personal with the well-known children’s author, who lives in Norwich.
