Artists from across South Norfolk will welcome visitors into their studios as part of Norfolk Open Studios, which will take place from 24 September to 9 October.

Painter Nicola Slattery from Alburgh said: “I first took part in Norfolk Open Studios over 20 years ago and I have participated whenever I have been able to since then.

Artists at all stages of their careers will be taking part, from school and college students, through to emerging artists and established and professional creators and makers. Visitors will find painters, sculptors, weavers, ceramicists, furniture makers, wood workers, jewellery makers, pyrographers, textile artists and lots more throughout the varied landscapes of Norfolk.

The Arboretum Gallery will be opening in Heckingham and features the woodwork of six makers. Woodworker David Bartram said: “We always look forward to Norfolk Open Studios,

having been a part of it for several years – it's always great to meet the wide variety of people it attracts. While we mainly make commissioned furniture and do conservation work for organisations such as the National Trust, we wanted to have a space to display our own designs, so last year we opened The Arboretum Gallery.

Roast – halve lengthways, chop into 1-inch chunks, and wash thoroughly. Then, toss them in olive oil, salt and pepper and bake at 220oc for about 20 minutes, or until tender.

A cracking idea!

Cooks' tip

SEASONAL FOOD

Spread the leek love!

Sauté – chop as above, warm a glug of olive oil in a large skillet over a medium heat, add the leeks and cook, stirring occasionally, until they soften, about 5 minutes.

How you cook leeks is important to get the most out of them. Three of the best ways are:

Grill – slice in half lengthwise, rinse and dry well, and grill both sides on medium-high until they’re well charred and tender.

Leeks and eggs are made for each other. Fold sautéed leeks into an omelette or scrambled eggs, add to a frittata for a scrumptious Italian treat, or use liberally in a quiche or tart.

This relative of garlic, chives, shallots and onions has a sweet flavour that adds depth to any savoury dish. They are milder than most other alliums, which means they are delicious on their own, or as a side dish. The possibilities are endless. Here are some wonderful ways to enjoy this green and white joy!

Autumn is approaching, bringing with it the risk of storms and gales, which can play havoc in a garden as gusty winds smash pots, snap supports, scatter debris and destroy old fences, but out of destruction comes opportunity! Pots can be replaced – this time choose wide bases for more stability and use a heavy loam-based compost such as John Innes for added weight and improved growing conditions.

You can use almost any woody shrubs to create a hedge, but if you wish to deter intruders try pyracantha or berberis, and if allowed to reach a reasonable size these will also provide great protection for nesting birds. A nice straight clipped hedge adds formality to a space, or why not let your imagination run free and go wavy, or get truly creative and indulge in a spot of topiary?! Jottings

A hedge is simply a row of plants either of the same type or a mixture of several species.

33

Hedges are a simple and cost-effective answer to defining boundaries. If they are grown well they are able to contain (or exclude) animals and people,

A traditional hedge would have been made up of native trees with one type being dominant, usually hawthorn or blackthorn, intermixed with others such as hazel, dogwood, field maple, dog rose, spindle and guelder rose, depending on local availability.

reduce wind speeds and provide food and habitat for countless species of wildlife – all with a positive carbon footprint!

This type of hedge is best planted ‘bare root’ (dug from the field and transplanted while the plants are dormant during the colder months, November to the end of March). Most varieties will be available to order now, or container-grown choices are available all year round. Autumn

planting gives plants the longest chance of getting their roots down into the soil to help them get established, before the dryness of possible summer heatwaves means constant watering.

As the need for hedges to enclose fields and settlements has diminished, the demand for more ornamental hedging has developed. Evergreen choices might be required to create privacy, hide objects, or form a backdrop to more elaborate planting. Laurel and Thuja plicata are fast-growing and therefore create screening relatively quickly, but they require more ongoing maintenance to keep them in check, as opposed to Portuguese laurel, yew or holly, which are all fine choices for more modest spaces.

Check stakes for rot and try to be more tidy around your plot during autumn, and as for the collapsed fence, it’s decision time – do you replace it with a new one or plant a natural hedge instead?

So

In this case, definitely consider spinach, typically planted at the start of autumn, and carrots too. We associate carrots with sugary, summer flavours, but planted in November, and with a bit of protection, the Adelaide carrot flourishes across the colder months for an early spring treat.

Leeks – a must on a winter plot – offer volume, flavour and spiciness right up until the soil freezes solid. Winter salads; rows of Lambs Lettuce, Land Cress and mustard, will need some protection from the elements, but once in the ground they are resilient and happy to be picked across the colder months, where they’ll regrow and keep the supply to your lunch table constant.

Think about kale, brussels sprouts, parsnips, and who can resist the Jerusalem artichoke? These are all easy to get into the ground, simple to maintain, and will flourish as the year goes on, ready for picking just when the temperatures begin to drop sharply in November.

And you can never ignore hardy, tough and tasty onions (and shallots); easy to plant, brilliantly versatile, and incredibly resourceful in the soil. Onions have a very long growing season

The notion of the winter vegetable is one we all stand by – rough, rustic, wholesome and happy. They are the meal mainstays of a season in which we want to be inside, wrapped up warm, with the products of our labour in front of us.

too and require slightly longer in the ground, so planting now will mean they won’t be ready until nextAllsummer.ofthis proves that while many of us believe the end of the summer will gradually see our gardens lose their colourful, bountiful appeal, there is still plenty of work to do, and plenty of our outside spaces still to be enjoyed.

Horticultural inspiration, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and much-loved presenter, Alan Titchmarsh, discusses putting early preparations in place for the cold season.

You also need to start thinking about early spring vegetables –they’ll be longer in the ground but still working their magic through the winter months.

then, winter is coming! Okay, so it’s a way off yet, but getting our plans together early for what we want to see in our gardens in winter is actually a really good idea, even if the whole discussion feels a little, well, ‘out of season’, you might say!

The first thing that strikes me about Polly Fern’s exquisite ceramics is the elegance. There is charm, even humour, but everything is delicately balanced, with clarity and a seemingly effortless sense of design.

gardener. Polly initially specialised in Illustration at Norwich School of Art. But after trying an evening course in ceramics it was love at first sight. “I’ve always been focussed on making as well as drawing and painting – something I find very satisfying. When you are illustrating books it can only really be seen on paper. But I wanted my work to be seen in different areas; in homes, in gardens.”

Chatting in her garden studio – shelves lined with plain vases and plates awaiting decorations and a kiln in the corner – it’s immediately clear that here is someone who absolutely loves her work. Living in the country, creating ceramics might seem a romantic idyll, but there are many frustrations and disasters along the“Becauseway.

firing ceramics goes wrong so often, you can’t be precious,” explains Polly. Part of the excitement is the possibility of not knowing the outcome. Things may go wrong, but the end result often has its own beauty.

She ended up working in a ceramics studio, learning new skills and techniques. She then began to release small, unique collections through her on-line shop, and placed a few pieces in galleries. A stint with Homes & Antiques magazine, illustrating maps for a monthly column, provided initial income, but Polly always believed she could succeed. “I knew I could, from the first time I sold a painting.”

Polly now lives with her partner, Richard, in a lovely Georgian cottage on the Norfolk/Suffolk border. She sees it as a blank canvas for her work. “When I couldn’t find the right wallpaper, I thought: “I’ll just make it!” Polly then taught herself to create repeats for wallpaper and ended up selling the result on her website. She also created her own tiles for a new kitchen. “Artists always have the most interesting homes,” she laughs.

I ask Polly a little more about the processes involved, and she shares some sketchbooks. “It’s not just making, decorating, glazing, firing, but also planning,

Outside the bustling Gangway cafe Takeaway or dine in I follow the sound of jazz Amid the plentiful chatter, clinking crockery and laughing ladies

Maureen Marlow, from Sheringham, finds writing cathartic and penned this lovely poem about the town she loves. She runs her own dog sitting business, loves to travel and is a wild swimmer.

A lady rebuffs her seat Bounds over and plants herself on mine

Families with children, with dogs Friends coming together

I stop and take a pew too Four solo bodies find respite On the bench in front

Taking my leave

Late morning

One yabbers on a mobile

One sits, briefly, then suddenly departs swiftly

SHERINGHAM ON A SATURDAY

And those with all four feet on the ground

The coast hopper Drops its cargo Visitors disembarking like cattle

I have done this in my garden for many years, and have experienced the joy of watching the usual garden birds feasting

for the best bits of fruit. Don’t forget that weed seeds in the lawn provide finches with extra nutrition too. So enjoy your lawn, and get your camera and binoculars ready!

WILDLIFE

Birds enjoying a windfall feast in Pete’s garden.

With thanks to Pete Eveson, from Pulham Market. Pete is a TV cameraman who has worked on dramas, nature programmes, studio and outside broadcasts for both BBC and ITV.

By TV camerman Pete Eveson

This doesn’t cost anything, and you’ll be providing extra food during the winter, and birdwatching amusement too, as they congregate and spar

If you have a garden with fruit trees growing in the lawn, allowing the windfalls to stay on the grass over the winter will help the wild birds that visit your garden. Although many fallen fruit go soft and unsightly, they are a winter bonus to resident and migratory birds who will eventually eat every last scrap of the fruit, leaving the lawn clear for the first mow in the New Year.

on windfalls, especially during harsh weather. But the more unusual visitors will also find their way to these winter stores, including fieldfares, redwings and waxwings – if you leave berries on the trees.

With this extremelysummer'shotweather, very little lawn mowing has been done on the scorched grass, and in my garden the fruit trees are dropping apples and pears all over the place. Now we're in the cooler autumn and winter period, it's a good idea to let the lawn recover by not mowing the grass and leaving all that fallen fruit to supply winter food for your garden birds.

Don’t mow the grass!

The fearsome yet fantastically flamboyant Marco Pierre White shares his mouthwatering recipe for Chicken Chasseur.

3. If you’re using brandy, pour it in around the edge of the pan so that it runs underneath the chicken. Cook for 2-3 minutes to allow the alcohol to evaporate. Add the wine in the same way, and cook for a further 2-3 minutes to allow the alcohol to evaporate and reduce the acidity.

4. Next, add the chicken stock pot and the tomato juice (with gravy browning if using). Shake the pan to gently work it in and turn the chicken pieces until fully coated in the liquid. Bring slowly to the boil to allow the chicken stock pot to dissolve, then add the tarragon and simmer for 5 minutes.

3 tbsp tarragon, chopped

2 shallots, very finely chopped

1 chicken stock pot

6. Next, add in the parsley and diced tomato, shaking the pan to mix everything in well. Spoon the mushrooms, parsley and tomato over the chicken and garnish with sprigs of parsley, then serve.

Either 1 small chicken, cut into 8 pieces, or 8 chicken thighs, or 8 chicken breast fillets (skin on or off)

2 1/2 cups tomato juice (with an optional touch of gravy browning added for extra colour)

250g button mushrooms, finely sliced

2 tbsp olive oil

to the frying pan, placing them under the chicken so they cook.

5. While the chicken is simmering, take a separate frying pan and heat the remaining olive oil. Slice the mushrooms and add to the second pan, then fry for 3-5 minutes.

2 tbsp parsley, chopped

A few sprigs of fresh parsley to garnish

1 tbsp plain flour, for coating

2 tomatoes, skinned, de-seeded and finely diced

Marco Pierre White’s Chicken Chasseur

1. Gently heat half the oil in a large, heavy-based frying pan. The oil should be hot, but not so hot that it scorches the floured chicken. Next, spread a layer of flour on a plate or a tray, and coat the chicken pieces evenly and thoroughly, shaking off any excess flour. This will add a golden brown colour to the cooked chicken and help thicken the sauce.

RECIPE49RECIPE

2. Put the floured chicken pieces into the hot olive oil, skin side down, and fry without moving the pieces until golden brown underneath. This should take around 8-10 minutes. Next, turn the chicken and fry until browned on the other side. Finely chop the shallots and add

Green hay refers to the process of cutting hay from a local wildlife-rich site and taking the cut hay to a new site to help create new wildlife-friendly areas. Nick Little, Director and Co-founder of the 12th Man Campaign

The 12th Man Radio Show is broadcast on the first Thursday of every month.

The 12th Man campaign provides Mental Health First Aid training to trades and interest groups, giving men the knowledge and confidence to talk about mental health and to use these skills to be the 12th Man at work and in their social lives.

Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45 and Norfolk has one of the highest suicide rates in the UK. The struggles many of us faced during the pandemic brought mental health into even sharper focus, prompting the radio station and the 12th Man campaign to come together to produce a show dedicated to getting men talking about their mentalNickhealth.Little, Director and Co-founder of the 12th Man Campaign, says: "The 12th Man is a bit like a football crowd –

63 CANINE BEHAVIOUR

In later years, we introduced a terrier puppy to a year-old Ragdoll cat. The similarly sized pair soon became inseparable, the cat’s supine ‘whatever’ attitude allowing a ‘rough and tumble’ sibling relationship right from the outset.

Be especially aware if your dog is a hunting breed. Sudden movements from the cat can easily trigger their desire to chase – something to be nipped in the bud, as once activated the impulse can be hard to subdue. Likewise staring – distract your dog away from the cat and reward for calm behaviour.

Cats like to watch and evaluate situations, favouring somewhere high up as a retreat when unsure. A platform bed is ideal for this.

Many of us have cats and dogs that cohabit peacefully. It can be something almost taken for granted. Perhaps humans have just cleverly followed their instincts when putting the two species together!

Whether introducing a kitten to an incumbent dog, or a dog or puppy to the resident feline, thought and patience make for success. It’s important that each pet has a place of comfort and peace to retreat to, somewhere containing their bed, water, food, toys and, in the case of a cat – a litter tray. Each then has a sanctuary.Beforebringing the two animals together, it can be really useful to introduce their respective scents. This is easy, simply wipe a soft cloth over the head of the cat and then leave the cloth in the dog’s area. Repeat the exercise, stroking over the

The newcomer is often young, and I think their infant demeanour activates a caring and gentle attitude in the older, established animal. We added a tiny kitten to our twoDobermann household with minimal kerfuffle. I ‘gave’ the kitten to the female dog to look after, praising her greatly for the maternal attitude she exhibited right from the start, and not particularly fussing the kitten, who was happy enough to be part of proceedings anyway!

Before too long it should be possible to let the pair get closer. Keep the dog on a lead and never pick up the cat to bring it towards the dog, as panicky spitting and scratching could easily ensue. Norfolk-born actress, Olivia Colman, tells Village People why the need to be busy far outweighs a desire to be popular.

Olivia Colman’s career trajectory has seen the true evolution of an actress, almost back to the point where she started.

Colman, who recently moved from London back to Norfolk, returns this year in Secret Invasion, a Disney+ TV miniseries based on the Marvel Comics storyline of the same name. She is married to actor Ed Sinclair and has three children.

she admits. “It feels very awkward to me and every time someone fawns over my work I can’t help but think there are millions of people all across the country doing jobs that are infinitely more important than mine.”

Mosquitoes, but away from the dazzling sparks of Tinseltown’s arrogance, Colman has found herself reconnecting with the simple, organic, rustic pleasures and projects, including a spate of independent films.

“I think we all move through various stages in our lives and the worst thing you can ever do is stay in the same space continually,” she says. “I’m one of those curious characters who takes those sorts of things to extremes – I yearn for the next project, the next setting; yet when I get there I’m in it all of a few minutes before plotting another stepOfelsewhere.”course, her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown gave her perhaps a pinnacle role that may, in future, define this brilliant talent more than any other.

Not only did she reunite herself with the simple pleasures of playing live to an audience, during a wildly successful National Theatre run as Jenny in

The actress set out on her path to dramatic excellence at the much-renowned Footlights Dramatic Club at Cambridge University. There, she shared the stage with the likes of David Mitchell, Richard Ayoade and Peter Serafinowicz, the latest in a long line of undergraduates to have trodden the boards.

65 PEOPLE

Perhaps it's that grounding that presents the actress with an ability to connect with an audience in a way that circumnavigates gender, social status and “Ultimately, age. working makes me happy,” she admits, “although I do struggle to say no. That people still want to watch me is the biggest thrill and, of course, the greatest mystery!”

The route to a wider audience took Colman on the same path as older dramatists and comedians Hugh Laurie, Tony Slattery and Sue Perkins; and yet despite excelling in Rev, Broadchurch, The Night Manager and The Favourite, the 48-year-old actress has arguably spent the last few years coming full circle.

How did you get into writing children's books?

Closing date is 30 November and the usual Village people rules apply.

I'm pleased to say that I have recently written a new picture book text. Children's books are important because they are formative. It makes me happy to write them and to know that they add to the happiness of children all over the world.

Some say that the best start in life for a children’s writer is a difficult childhood. They grow into adults who write stories as a soothing balm. My best-selling title, Tell Me Something Happy Before I Go to Sleep, is about waking up in the morning and finding everything in place. It’s still in print after 25 years and was written at a time of great loss. All stories start with a problem. On my writing courses I called this ’Spinning your straw into Gold’.

During the pandemic I felt children’s books were irrelevant and I lost the playfulness needed to write them. Instead I wrote Facebook posts about Norwich in lockdown. I simply had to pay attention to this profoundly historic event.

Following injury, inflammation occurs to initiate tissue repair. However, excessive inflammation can cause pain and disability. Ice treatment is most effective within the first 48 hours following an injury. It decreases circulation, which reduces swelling and inflammation. Ice also has an analgesic (pain relieving) effect.

For chronic injuries, such as osteoarthritis, moderate heat can also have a pain relieving effect. Heat helps to stimulate blood flow to the area and relax tissues. The increase in blood flow to the area also promotes the body’s natural healing response.

Ice or heat – which should I use?

What is Contrast Therapy?

Contrast Therapy involves alternating the use of ice and heat, and is effective from around 48 hours after your injury.

…and heat?

The combination of ice therapy taking blood flow away (vasoconstriction) and heat therapy increasing blood flow (vasodilation) can have a flushing effect, which reduces swelling and promotes healing.

Heat and ice treatments should not be used on areas of altered sensation, and a single treatment should be applied for no longer than 20 minutes. Heat should not be used on broken skin or acute injury. Overall, heat and ice are low risk treatments to aid with injury management.

Get serious about skincare It’s vital to adapt your skin routine as you age, and as a rule this means investing in products of increasing quality as the years go by. There’s so much attention at the moment on the cost of petrol, the cost of our utilities, the rise in inflation, and it all seems like bad news. Yet sometimes we are all guilty of obsessing over the negative elements, while failing to recognise good opportunities elsewhere. If you’re looking for one sector where costs, pretty much consistently over time, have always decreased, then reach into your pocket and take out your trusty mobile phone.

MONEY88 MONEY ON MY MIND… with Martin Lewis

He’s

the UK’s leading money saving expert – a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets, as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers. In this article, Martin Lewis looks at how, in a time of rising costs, we can make savings in other places.

Now usually when I suggest switching to a different mobile provider, people come back with concern over signal strength for,

needs, because once you find the right deal, it’s really very easy nowadays to grab your PAC code and switch networks.

In an era of prices rising inexplicably across the board in other elements of our life, the time is now to start working the equation back in our favour, so have a look at your bill, survey the competition and start the conversation!

say, Lebara Mobile or PlusNet or whoever it is offering the best deal on data. The reality though is that the communications network is run by four companies and four companies only – O2, EE, Vodafone and Three.

Every other provider is piggybacking off their signal, so, in effect, it’s the same signal. So by selecting one of the smaller companies, all you’re doing is going with a virtual network, and everything else should remain the same. Obviously check before you sign up to see if 5G or tethering conditions are available, but beyond those things it’s the same line.

It’s strange that mobile phones are such an integral part of our lives, yet many of us take for granted the competitiveness of the industry and don’t realise where we can be making savings.

If you have ever met a professional to arrange a Will, the meeting may very well have gone like this: The ‘Will provider’ took on the role of a travel agent and talked about you “going away!” Why did they do that? In all likelihood you didn’t know what questions to ask, and most of what the provider told you flew right over your head. You needed a good memory because you didn’t receive written explanations for anything.

Arranging your Will is one of the most important meetings you’ll ever attend, but quite often it can get very bizarre!
