LOCAL CHARITIES BENEFIT FROM COMMUNITY FUND East Anglia Children’s Hospice (EACH), Star Throwers Cancer Care and Support, Chapel Road School for Severely Disabled Children and the Norfolk Community Foundation will each receive £2,735.20 – a total of £10,940.80 – thanks to the Lord Baker Community Fund. The fund, launched by Lord Russell Baker of Little Moulton and managed by the Norfolk Community Foundation, provided the four local charities with a welcomed boost just before Christmas.

Further fundraising events have been organised for 2016, including the Norwich Charity Darts Masters at Norwich City Football Club on June 25. Darts legends Eric Bristow, Keith Deller, Bobby George and our very own Steve Beaton from North Walsham will be in attendance.

NEW MUMS WITHOUT MUMS For almost three years now the Norfolk support group, New Mums Without Mums, has been growing steadily with 150 members currently.

The Norfolk based charity, Big C, has teamed up with some of the county’s favourite restaurants, as they prepare for lovers to indulge in Valentine’s Day dinners. These restaurants will be offering delicious, locally produced chocolates

in a Kilner jar to tables for a suggested donation in the fight against cancer. Those participating include Stoke Mill, Stoke Holy Cross; Pedro’s Texmex Cantina, Chapelfield Gardens, Norwich; No1. The group regularly fundraises – having already donated £14,000 to local charities – and provides support to its members through regular meet-ups. COMPETITION DISCOVERS LOCAL TALENT Back in 2010, June Owen had written a one-act play and wanted to enter it into a local competition, when she discovered that such competitions could be found almost everywhere but Norfolk. So she launched her own and the award-winning Garboldisham Amateur Dramatic Society agreed to perform the winning plays.

New playwrights have been discovered in each of the three previous competitions and, now in its fourth year, June is hoping to find another. The last competition produced 20 entries, which is a record for a single county. For more information contact June at june.owen1@sky.com

FIRE STATION BOOK IS A RED HOT READ Ray King served 35 years in Diss Fire Brigade. When he saw a photo of the staff taken in 1947, it kindled his burning desire to pen down the local brigade’s history. Ray noticed that he worked alongside most of the 1947 team and spotted the Albion appliance, which had led the parade to St Paul’s Cathedral in London to mark the 70th Anniversary of the Blitz, which is still active today. Over the past year, Ray has spent hours researching the brigade’s history, with help from the present fire station. He has had 200 copies printed, which can be bought from a local Diss book shop and Bressingham Steam Museum for £8.50.

Wymondham Nature Group Wymondham Nature Group (WyNG) is the local group of the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, a charity working to protect and enhance Norfolk’s nature for the benefit of wildlife and people. You do not need to be an expert to join us but just have a passion for wildlife and the environment. We hold nine entertaining and informative talks each year, covering all aspects of nature. The talks are held at the Town Green Centre, Wymondham, on the second Thursday of the month (September to May) at 7.30pm. Entry is just £2 and everyone is most welcome to attend. Another of our aims is to inform and educate the public. We have our own colourful publication, SWIFT, which includes all manner of interesting sightings and observations, and we also

organise several guided walks throughout the year.

Maintaining the wealth of biodiversity in our area is of utmost importance to us and we engage with the local planning system to ensure wildlife is not overlooked.

Recently, Tolls Meadow was dubbed one of the“Seven Wonders of Wymondham”. As a fen meadow – a rare habitat through which the River Tiffey flows – it provides a home to a whole host of interesting wildlife, including the endangered water vole (our very own“Ratty” from The Wind in the Willows) and there is a wide range of wild flowers, including orchid species, marsh marigold, meadowsweet and ragged robin, which in turn

New volunteers are always warmly received with no previous experience necessary and work can be found for all levels of fitness. Get set to toast Matthew Playwright Richard Bean has delighted and entertained theatre audiences around the world with a string of successful comedies such as the international hit One Man, Two Guvnors.

ow coming to Norwich Theatre Royal from February 29 to March 5 is his brilliantly observed drama set in a bread factory – Toast – and it will star the multitalented and Olivier award-winning actor Matthew Kelly.

Matthew entranced audiences and critics alike with his performance as a chain-smoking curmudgeon on the brink of retirement during the show’s London revival in 2014. Matthew, can you tell us a little of what Toast is all about and how your character fits in? It’s the story of seven incredible (and real) blokes in a bakery in Hull 1975 during the days when health and safety wasn’t an issue. My part is Walter “Nellie” Nelson, a man who has worked at the factory all his life. He is like the walking dead – battered by a lifetime of hard labour – but is the emotional heart of the play. It’s a big hearted, incredibly moving play about real people within a real community. Oh, and of course it’s very funny.

The production is touring eight venues around the UK – how important is touring theatre? I love working in the provinces much more than in the West End because you’re performing amongst a community and that’s very important to me. Not only that, you’re working with a close family of actors, stage managers and artists. I love living my life on the road… but I do miss my own bed! Toast also has a New York run in April and May – are you looking forward to that? I’ve actually never played New York so it’s absolutely thrilling to be going there with Toast. Off Broadway is especially exciting because the venue we’re going to – 59E59 – is hugely respected and well-known in Britain, but you don’t have the huge pressure of the commercialisation of Broadway itself. We can relax, do our job and enjoy ourselves without worrying about that side of the business. You’re well-known for performing both on screen and on stage. Which do you prefer? I love both. As long as I’m working and being paid I’m happy. In fact, I don’t even need to be paid!

Were you familiar with Richard Bean’s writing before this production? Oh yes, of course. I loved One Man, Two Guvnors and have always been aware of his work, particularly everything he did at Hull Truck with John Godber. I’ve always wanted to do The Mentalists which is a gorgeous play. Richard is a very witty man and it’s been an ambition of mine to work with him for a very long time. You’ll be starring alongside Simon Greenall [best known for playing Michael opposite Steve Coogan’s alter-ego Alan Partridge] who you’ve known for some time – what is it like sharing the stage with him? Simon used to be one of my staff writers for years on You Bet, and in the four years I worked on the show he was one of my favourite writers. So I’ve known him for 25 years (oh God!). He’s always made me laugh and is a terrific actor and a clever man. I admire him very much.

Countrymans’ of Norfolk Meals cooks fresh food daily at Wymondham College and delivers it to clients hot and ready to eat.Their menu offers different choices daily and caters for all dietary requirements and tastes.

However the shocking truth is that people in our region are struggling to provide adequate food for themselves and their families. Ever reducing budgets due to cuts in government support and funding means that parents regularly have to miss meals to enable their children to eat.

There are two services available: a subsidised provision completely without cost for four weeks, after which time a non-compulsory donation of £3.50 per meal is suggested, and a more traditional “meals on wheels” provision, for £5.50 per meal, for those who would benefit from a fresh hot meal but do not fit the subsidised criteria.

Vulnerable adults too, such as the elderly, are suffering with malnourishment and other related health issues because they have to choose between food and fuel. The aim of Countrymans’ of Norfolk Meals is clear – to alleviate the pressure on vulnerable groups and address food poverty and deprivation in our community through the provision of good quality, nutritious hot meals, support and guidance. The project was founded out of the belief that “good food for all” should be a right, not a privilege, and that community spirit in our towns and villages should be rekindled.

As a not-for-profit organisation, any surplus income from both services is reinvested into the project to enable Countrymans’ to expand its service and help more people in the community. Born in 1780 into a wealthy Quaker merchant family in Norwich, she cared for the poor as a girl started up a school for local children at her home as a teenager. She felt her own education to be lacking and wrestled constantly with poor spelling, grammar and punctuation, as is seen in extracts from her diaries. She loved her husband and her 11 children but felt she was not always the perfect wife or mother. She was torn between her duty to her husband, her family, her faith and her need to work on behalf of the deprived. This is a thought-provoking book on a somewhat neglected subject.

Those still around and prospering have survived just about everything that has been thrown at them: wars, bombs, fires, recessions and depressions, family fallings out, takeover bids and a succession of revolutionary changes in the retail market. Chris Armstrong tells the story of five of Norfolk’s most iconic department stores, unearthing many previously unheard stories and meeting some genuinely eccentric characters along the way. Roy’s of Wroxham features, as does Baker & Larner in Holt. There’s even a Norwichbased, family-owned department store chain... what was its name again?

Collecting antique clocks To the experienced eye, East Anglian clocks are easy to identify. Ninety per cent of all Norfolk longcase clocks will have certain identifiable features. The pediment at the top of the clock – known as a “whale’s tail” design – is unique to Norfolk, though it does vary on styles and interpretations there is nothing else in the country which looks similar. Even just south of the border, a Suffolk clock has a type of crest which is wavy and tapered. West or northNorfolk, the design is the more common “swan neck” or “pagoda”. Other unique features are the trunk door, which has a simple semi-circle shape, often known as a “thumb nail” design. Norfolk clocks are also slim and usually made of oak, as it was easily obtainable, unlike the exotic overseas woods of mahogany and rosewood which weren’t used until much later. The plinth of the base is shaped, many would say, like a baby’s bum! Pictured below is a typical Norfolk longcase clock. It is a later example and is therefore made of mahogany,

but it has the whale’s tail-style pediment and also a thumb nail trunk door. The dial has an automata – a rocking ship – with which the action of the pendulum swings side to side. Like all eight-day longcase clocks, this will strike the hours on a bell. Also pictured is a large and very fine rosewood bracket clock, which would of graced the mantel of a large and important family home. It is a triple-fusee, quarter-striking, so it strikes one of two possible tunes every 15 minutes on a nest of bells. It also has a repeating function, which would of been linked to many rooms so a cord could be pulled to find out its last strike, thereby indicating the time to within 15 minutes – a very useful function in the days before electric lights! Unfortunately, in today’s market many antique clocks are “marriages” – meaning different movements put together with different cases. Always speak to the seller and ask about the clock’s history, the movement and any restoration that has been carried out. Any reputable dealer will be happy to give you the full facts. In the first of a new series of articles in which we explore old, local newspapers, wspapers Sarah Doig takes a look at what newspapers tell us about the role of our pubs and inns in the past.

n the 16th century, there were nearly 20,000 drinking establishments in England. Alehouses were on the lowest social rung, with ale brewed on the premises and little or no accommodation. Then came taverns which were allowed to sell wine and food as well as beer. And at the top end of the scale came inns.

in the village pond of a toddler named Emma Jane Finbow. In an age where public transport was rarely available and affordable to the working class, holding an inquest in the village where the death occurred meant that the coroner could hear from witnesses to the sad event.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, inns grew in size and splendour, especially those situated on the major highways in the era of coach travel. They ey were often the social, intellectual and commercial centres of the neighbourhood. Before public halls were built, lectures, debates and other communityy events were held in rooms at inns. It was also the place where goods were sold and contracts drawn up. Local newspapers of the time are simply littered with accounts of such activities. In the 18th century newspapers, advertisements informing readers of forthcoming cock-fights at local pubs and inns are widespread. Publicans were amongst the first commercial sponsors of “cocking”. The inns would make handsome profits ofits from selling food and drink to the spectators, until the sport was banned in 1795. This advert in the Norfolk Chronicle is a typical example: Cocking: New Buckenham George, 18 July 1777. On Monday and Tuesday the 28th and 29th of this month will be fought a regular main of cocks, at the George Inn, New Buckenham, between the Gentlemen of Norwich and the Gentlemen of the above town, to fight for four Guineas a battle and forty Guineas the odd. The Cocks will be on the pit each day precisely at twelve o’clock.

One other, rather interesting, use of inns through to the end of the 19th century was for the annual hiring fairs of servants. These events took place across the country in the autumn, at the end of the farming season when farm labouring contracts expired. All farmers wishing to hire workers for the coming year, and all labourers seeking employment, were brought together. The following advertisement in the Norfolk Chronicle of 20 September 1783 is a typical example: Notice is hereby given that there will be a Petty Sessions this year, held at the World’s End, Mulbarton, on Monday the 29th Inst. being New Michaelmas Day, as usual, for hiring and retaining of servants. Dinner on table at one o’clock. So, next time you have a drink in your local, look around you and imagine the varied activities hosted by the pub in days gone by.

Who is your product or service aimed at? In other words, who do you want to buy what you’re selling? Build up a clear and detailed picture of who and where you are targeting. This is the vital first step before you decide anything else.

2) What’s your message? Once you’ve defined who you want to do business with, you need to understand what you want to SAY to them. What specifically do you want your advert to promote? It is important that you communicate about your business and explain what it is, but it can also be beneficial to communicate why you do what you do too. 3) What’s the best media for your message and market? Once you’ve got your market and message sorted, then (and only then) should you be thinking about which media would be the best way to target these people with your message. Think about where your target market lives and what sorts of media they consume; and choose a media that is most likely to get your message in front of them. Typically we find that the media we offer, our community magazines, are perfect for a large percentage of Norfolk and Suffolk businesses. If you’ve decided that a magazine is the medium for you, the next question is: What do you need to be looking out for when choosing a magazine to advertise in? We’re not going to pretend that we’re the only magazine your business could feature in, but we are confident that if you’re looking to increase sales and conversions, and gain brand awareness in Norfolk and Suffolk, Village People can help you achieve it. There’s a big choice of magazines out there, so consider: 1) How is it distributed? Trust us, this bit is important. Lots of community magazines are “distributed” via pick up points. In other words, all of the

Some magazines may seem very cheap; but when you break down how many copies are actually being printed and delivered (or dropped off in batches), you may find you are paying peanuts and getting monkeys (not of the financial kind)! Cost per thousand is a key question to ask any publisher you are considering doing business with.

5) Don’t be confused by the difference between circulation and readership

magazines are left in various places for the public to pick up “if” they pass by. Alternatively, magazines can be delivered door to door; which in our view is far more effective. Pick up points rely on a lot of luck to get your message into the hand of your prospects and there is no continuity; door to door delivery leaves nothing to chance. Royal Mail door-to-door is even better. 2) What is in the magazine? Naturally, magazine content varies, so it is important to ensure that the magazine you’re advertising in contains content that is perfect for its readers and your target market. Is the content bespoke and interesting? Is it real editorial and not “advertorial” (an extension of an advert)? Great editorial and stylish design means people read from cover to cover. 3) How confident are you in the publisher? Let’s break this down: you are paying the publisher money to do a good job for you and understandably, you will be really keen to make sure you are handing your money over to a reputable business. When you’re looking for a publisher to advertise with, make sure you do your research: • Do they have good testimonials and plenty of them? • Are they members of relevant trade bodies? • Have they won any publishing awards? • Do you know any of the businesses already advertising with them? If so ask them what it’s like to work with the magazine. • Will the publisher offer free advice on social media, marketing and design for your business?

Circulation is the number of actual copies printed. Readership is a made up number based on how many people potentially could be reading every copy. 6) Finally, NEVER get talked into something on the spot Never agree to something on the phone without giving yourself time to consider the points above and don’t sign yourself in to an annual contract, because business can change very quickly. You can only spend your marketing budget once, so make sure you make the right decision for your business. You may have reached this point and feel that Village People is the right magazine to boost your business. But the decisions don’t stop there! You may be wondering: How big should my advert be? What should be included on it? How will I get it designed? A special year for Wattonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s art gallery T he Wayland Dragonfly Gallery in Watton is firstly celebrating because the 2015 season was its most successful since opening in 2006. And in 2016, the art gallery will be celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Owned by the Wayland community, The Dragonfly Gallery forms one wing of Wayland House. It is managed by the Wayland Partnership, a community charity committed to promoting the economic, social, cultural and environmental wellbeing of the area. The Partnership works closely with local businesses, manages health projects addressing loneliness and dementia and works with both the younger and older members of the community. During the celebratory year, a number of events will be organised and held at the gallery. Throughout 2016 there will be a range of mixed media, group and

solo shows and a new programme of workshops, which always prove very popular. The workshops will include one for families on April 23, celebrating St George and the Dragon, and in August there will be an exhibition of the entries for the Wayland photographic challenge. The year will end with a bonanza of seasonal arts and crafts.

Check. Well we certainly went to the right place. If you’re doing a bit of retail therapy in Norwich and, like us, can never really make a decision on what to eat, then go to COSMO. It’s relaxed, easy on the pursestrings and it’s eat all-you-like for one set price. Already three hours into our shopping trip (and that was just in Jarrold) the girls and I decided to give this brand new restaurant that everyone is talking about a go. We were already close – COSMO is located in the old Habitat building. It was dead-on 12 noon, which is when COSMO opens for lunch, and already there was a queue outside the door. Riding up the escalator to the first floor, we were immediately pleasantly surprised. The restaurant was ultra-trendy, we could see the chefs cooking away and there was more than enough

space to cater for everyone that had been waiting. And the food! There were dishes upon dishes of everything – from Italian, Indian, Chinese, Thai… you name it and we were spoilt for choice. Once seated at our table, the waitress asked whether we’d been to COSMO before and kindly explained how it works. Basically, you go up, grab a plate, then help yourself. And do so as many times as you like until you feel very, very uncomfortably full. Challenge accepted! We each went for the“bottomless” soft-drink option (saves impulse buys later) and located the“starter” section. The plates were the same size whatever the course – not full-size but substantial enough to fill you up after just two helpings, as I soon discovered. I powered on, eating my way through pizza, pasta, curry, spring rolls, chips, chow mein, fried rice and sushi all before 1pm. And then it was time for dessert! Desserts were pleasant“fingerfood” options, including bite-size cheesecakes and mousses, as well as a selection of ice creams flavours to scoop for yourself. We were slightly disappointed because we thought there would be a chocolate fountain, but our waitress explained that the fountain, and number of additional dishes, are introduced only in the evening when there are even more diners and this is reflected in the cheaper lunch price.

or many, February would be classed as the most romantic month of the year, mainly due to the celebration of St Valentine’s on the 14th day, and why shouldn’t you show the one you love you care by giving a gift, maybe a box of luxury chocs, a meal out at your favourite restaurant, a hand-tied bouquet of flowers created by your local florist, or just a bottle of something nice to share. All these things will be appreciated but unfortunately may only last a few days, whereas a hardy pot-grown plant could last for years, reminding the recipient of you every time it flowers or needs tending. If you want flowers now, hellebores, heathers, sarcococca and primulas are all looking great, but plants for the garden make fantastic gifts for all sorts of occasions at any time of year. Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, memorial, or just to say hello or thank you, there’s a plant choice to suit at any budget. For the keen gardener we have some unusual varieties that will flourish with a little extra care, such as Loropetalum ‘Fire Dance’, Lobelia tupa, or Rehmannia elata, and for the less experienced a more robust selection.

For our wild birds love is also in the air, it’s still a little early for breeding but adult birds are beginning to pair up and start to search for suitable sites in which to build their nests, so now is the perfect time to put up nest boxes. The annual BTO National Nest Box Week runs from the 14th to 21st of February, and as different species of bird have different preferences when it comes to real estate, it’s worth investing in a few different types of box. Position them out of reach of predators and away from feeding stations, as respectable parents wish to bring up their young with a bit of privacy and not alongside a busy fast food outlet with rowdy visitors squabbling away! If you’re a bit nosey as to what’s going on inside the box you can keep your ears and eyes on them with a camera nest box (£50-00), they won’t mind and if you do get to see them build their nest and raise a family it’s all rather romantic.

REVIVE THE VEGETABLE PATCH The spring brings exciting times for vegetable growers. Prepare the soil of your vegetable patch for planting and add manure, peat moss or compost. It is time to plant peas, sweet peas, rhubarb, horseradish, asparagus and artichokes. Weather permitting, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, celery, leek, onions, radish seeds and early potatoes can be planted out around the middle of March.

Spinach, chard, cabbage and other hardy vegetables can be set out towards the end of the month. Plant fruit trees in early spring too, including strawberries, blueberries, loganberries and boysenberries. Don’t forget to sow your tomato and lettuce seeds indoors now.

ALL DEPENDS ON THE WEATHER The weather during early spring can be up and down so you will need to take each day as it comes. On cold days, stick with to protecting your plants from the frost, as well as general maintenance and planning:

PRUNE FOR A HEALTHY GARDEN

Note areas of your lawn where there is poor drainage and create channels.

Improve the shape of your plants by pruning them. It will also open them up, promoting exposure to sunlight and air circulation, giving you very healthy looking garden this year. But be aware that spring-blooming plants will already have produced their buds, so leave them be until after spring.

When it starts to warm up the exciting work can begin – perfecting your spring garden: Remove winter mulches from flower beds gradually so plants don’t have a sudden change of temperature.

You can now plant roses, deciduous shrubs and tender bulbs and tubers, such as dahlias, lilies and primroses. The garden will soon be blooming!

Plan your garden for the next few months, so you know which plants and seeds you wish to buy and when.

Sow seeds for slow-growing plants indoors such as ageratum, verbena and petunia at the end of March.

Arthur “Cocky King”, country entertainer Cocky King from Bromeswell was a real old-time county entertainer who would play his squeeze box, sing and tell yarns at The Bromeswell Cherry tree and village socials. Many will remember him playing for his mates outside Budgens in Woodbridge on market day where he would get quite offended if anyone threw him a tip! This is one of his stories: My father worked for a farmer out Bawdsey way and one morning he had to take some pigs down to Bloss’s slaughter house in Melton. On the way back, coming over the old Wilford Bridge, he saw old George Smith from Sutton struggling along with a big bag of taters on his back. “Morning George,” he said as he pulled up beside him. “Where you a going with that great bag of taters?” “Home,” said George. “Home?” said father. “Well you can’t carry them all that long way, that’s four or five miles. Jump up on the backboard and I’ll give you a lift.” George climbed on the back and they kept on chatting all the way to Sutton Plough. It wasn’t until father pulled

he old Mini Clubman was no oilpainting, but this one could easily earn its place on the podium at Legs 11. It’s a looker all right.

The brand-new Mini Clubman is far bigger than its siblings, is well-formed and its proportions are just right. And because it’s not exactly a shrinking violet, the Clubman is likely to win over quirkier types who might otherwise have gone for mid-size family car choices, such as the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus. The story hasn’t always been good for the Clubman. The first generation had a useless, single rear door that meant UK passengers were forced to step into the road. This didn’t helps sales and the Clubman therefore wasn’t exactly the rock star that BMW, Mini’s owner, was expecting.

But the Germans have seen the light and the previous rear-hinged “clubdoor” has been kicked to the kerb in favour of two normal back doors. Then there’s the barn-door boot which can be released manually, or if you ticked the hands-free tailgate option, a sassy little kick under the rear bumper will open them up. Inside, the comfortable seats are kind to your backside and feel supportive, especially during long periods on the road. The car’s uncluttered dashboard is dwarfed by a massive screen that sits where the speedometer on older Minis used to be. The controller on the central console manages most of the Clubman’s systems, so there are fewer buttons on the dash to confuse or divert you. As the Clubman is the largest of the current Mini litter, it has, predictably, the most capacious cabin.

This state-of-the-art Mini is a gargantuan step-up from its forerunner, and it puts right pretty much everything that was awry with its predecessors. Nadia’s kiwi & lemon cheesecake

Spring is here! Time to ditch those heavy, hot and starchy puds and move on to something cooler and lighter. How about something fresh, fruity and yummy? This dessert is quick and easy to make and it can be served in a traditional tin/dish, but it also looks really impressive and professional served in individual wine glasses. This cheesecake is a great finale to any dinner party, leaving guests wanting more – as well as the recipe!

Ingredients:

• 1 tub Philadelphia cream cheese

• 1 tin of condensed milk • The juice of one large lemon • The zest of half of one lemon • 1 tsp vanilla extract • Kiwi slices to decorate • 12 ginger nut biscuits, crushed

• 2 tbsp margarine or butter, melted

• 1 x 10g sachet of vegetarian gel (veggie alternative to gelatine), prepared as per pack instructions

Method:

Mix the crushed ginger nuts with the melted margarine or butter and layer them into the bottom of your wine glasses. Press them in with a spoon to make a firm base. Put aside.

In a mixing bowl, whisk the cream cheese and condensed milk until smooth.

Squeeze in the juice of the lemon, grate in the zest and add both the vanilla extract and veggie gel. Mix gently.

Pour the mixture into the wine glasses evenly. (This recipe should make four generous servings, or six smaller ones.)

Pop the glasses in the fridge to set for a few hours. Before serving, layer the slices of kiwi on top and take a proud picture – don’t forget to tag @vpmagazine on Instagram!

Q&A HEALTH Hair loss and the menopause Q:

Is hair loss part of the menopause? And if so, will it improve afterwards?

Feeling that your hair is getting really brittle, thinning or losing its sheen is actually very common in the menopause and is usually just caused by falling hormones.

But, there can be lots of contributory factors so let’s take a little look at those: One of the most important things that you need for good hair growth is protein, so make sure you top up your diet or get a protein powder shake and have one three times a week. Stress can be a big cause of hair loss. If you feel there is a lot of stress in your life (and the menopause creates stress in itself) remember to take a good vitamin B complex daily, such as Solgar B50, to naturally restore calm. Another factor, especially if you start to lose your hair at the beginning of the menopause, is if you have heavy or prolonged periods. This can lead to anemia, which can also cause hair loss. If tiredness is also a problem

he popularity of cosmetic procedures is on the rise. A high proportion of men and women would consider nsider surgical or non-surgical procedures nowadays, proving there has been a shift in attitudes.

The result would be tighter skin, but not necessarily younger looking faces! Cosmetic surgeons now know that the face deflates due to loss of soft tissue, such as fat and even bones. It is also understood that skin quality deteriorates, so all aspects of facial aging can now be addressed. Lasers have changed the game; they repair and rejuvenate the skin. To replace lost volume, soft tissue fillers or even fat can be injected under the skin. These two treatments complement each other and are less invasive and less of a commitment than a facelift. However, if a facelift is still your wish, these can now be done under pure local anaesthesia with little to no recovery period or bruising â&#x20AC;&#x201C; depending on the extent of surgery. General anaesthesia is no longer required for body contouring either. It can be carried out purely under local anaesthesia with fine instruments while you listen to relaxing music. Why not recycle the removed fat to enhance face or body parts such as hands, buttocks or breasts providing a natural augmentation rather than implants?

Her vibrant faith has given her blessings for life and hope for death, helping her withstand the fears, pressures and dictates of the disease through prayer and loving support. “god has shown me real love through family and friends and strangely i am more alive now than before the cancer,” says Celia from framingham earl, norwich. she shares her inspiring message through Lifeline – a DVD made to give every suffering soul new hope. it was made seven years ago after Celia received the bleak medical report despite previous chemo and radiotherapy for the disease. too weak to carry a camcorder on a tripod, she enlisted the help of a photographer friend for the filming and editing using lessons from BBC Voices. she has given away over 1,000 copies of the short film to people from all walks of life and produced another 1,000 to feed demand. she encourages people to take one – “it is a blessing – a ‘lifeline’ to anyone in distress through the power of prayer,” says Celia, whose home is often aglow with candles reminding her that Jesus is the “light of the world”. initially Lifeline was to help members of the norfolk and norwich big C Centre’s rosemary group – a support group for women living with secondary cancer. Celia attends the weekly meetings where raw emotions, laughter and friendship are shared to help everyone cope with the challenges of cancer. she says: “Caring friends and family, together with quiet reflection and the beauty of creation are like blessings from god.” often tired as cancer has now spread to her breast

The Personal Savings Allowance is coming A chance to keep more of the interest from your savings By Andrew Hagger independent personal finance analyst from www.moneycomms.co.uk

radical new government initiative for uK savers comes into force from the beginning of the 2016/17 tax year with the introduction of the Personal savings allowance (Psa). the Psa will apply to all non-isa cash savings and current accounts, and will allow savers to receive a generous portion of their interest totally free of tax.

Currently all bank and building society interest is paid “net” – after 20% tax has been deducted – apart from isas. However that all changes from 6 april 2016 when everybody will receive their interest payments “gross”, i.e. without any deductions. as a result, it is expected that around 95% of savers will receive their interest tax-free, which is an instant boost of 20% on savings income. the amount of tax-free interest you will be entitled to under Psa will be based on your annual taxable income, as follows: • for those earning less than £42,700, i.e. basic rate taxpayers, there will be no tax payable on the first £1,000 of savings interest earned each year. • the tax-free allowance for those in the higherrate tax bracket (earning between £42,701 and £150,000) is lower at £500. • People in the 45% tax band (those with an income above £150,001) are currently not entitled to the Psa.

the figures above assume a savings account in a sole name; however for joint accounts the allowance and thus the balances you can keep are doubled. note that savers with bigger savings pots who will generate more than their annual maximum tax-free interest allowance can still shelter a further £15,240 per person in a tax-free isa during the 2016/17 tax year. so even though cash savings rates remain at historically low levels at least there’s a bit of positive news and some extra income on the horizon.

it’s refreshing to see that lower earners will benefit from the largest allowance and, after years of putting up with pitifully low savings rates, the Psa is a welcome but long-overdue boost to uK savers. there are still further guidelines and finer details of the Psa workings to be released by the government and HmrC, but in the meantime, it’s worth understanding the sort of balances you’ll be able to maintain and remain within your Psa.

Village wanderings Redgrave

The contrast between the arable landscape and the valley fen habitat of the Waveney makes this an interesting wander. Starting at St Mary’s church, the walk drops down to a National Nature reserve before ‘climbing’ back to the picturesque village of Redgrave. Chinese New Year:

YEAR OF THE MONKEY February 8th starts the 2016 Chinese New Year and it will be the Year of the Monkey. The Chinese calendar follows a cycle of 12 years, each one being named after an animal. Those born in a specific animal year are said to have similar certain personalities. People born in previous Years of the Monkey will have been born in 1968, 1980, 1992 and 2004. They are said to be ambitious and adventurous people, and their lucky numbers contain 4 and 9, such as 49 and 94.They normally follow specific careers in science, accounting and finance, and engineering. The Chinese New Year is a time when families gather to celebrate and remember members of the family who live too far away to travel, who are sick or who have died.The whole family comes together for a special feast. Popular food items are “jiaozi” – beautiful and delicious dumplings boiled in water, prepared on New Year’s Eve and served immediately after midnight with a mouthwatering, garlic-soy sauce.The dumplings are shaped like gold and silver bars in the hope they will bring good luck and good fortune. After dinner the family play games, such as Chinese chess. Houses are decorated inside and out by putting up greetings and good wishes carefully written on red paper known as “red couplets”.The colours red and gold traditionally represent festivity and symbolise good luck and wealth. Street celebrations may include the performance of the lion and dragon dances with fire crackers.The loud noises made by fire crackers symbolise the banishing of

unhappiness or the bad events of the past year and welcome in a good and prosperous coming year. Housework is avoided on New Year’s Day because it runs the risk of washing or sweeping away good luck. It is also traditional to avoid washing your hair on the first and last day of the New Year. Words related to sickness and death are avoided, and any slaughtering of livestock has to be carried out on New Year’s Eve. Early on New Year’s Day children will receive lucky red packets called “Hong Bao” which will contain sweets or money.They are not opened in front of the person who gave them, whether it’s a parent, grandparent or any other relative, because it is considered impolite. In this country, it has become something of an important occasion for non-Chinese to celebrate the Chinese New Year. It offers a last chance for us to eat, drink and be merry before Easter. Chinese restaurants lay on special banquets, which are well worth attending. They comprise several courses of traditional food, eaten slowly and leisurely.The meal will frequently take up the whole evening. Over a sixth of the people in the world, Chinese and non-Chinese, celebrate the Chinese New Year.
