Welcome
OK, now it’s a sensible time to talk about Christmas! The local shops are packed full of exciting gifts to eat, wear and decorate your home. And if there’s one thing which I always source locally, it’s got to be a Christmas tree. Actually, we are slightly greedy here at VPHQ as we have two.
But Christmas is only one day and as usual, this issue includes some very inspiring stories of fantastic charitable organisations that do so much good in our local region. These run 365 days a year so do have a read and if something touches your heart please give what you can as this special time of year.
Happy Christm as from Lily, Ka ren & Sarah We’ve got some fantastic history of Garboldisham Manor in this issue. The manor house, built between 1869 and 1873 and designed by George Gilbert Scott junior, was demolished in the 1950s. Does anyone remember the house? If so, please feel free to chat to local historian Dennis Cross from Diss. It’s thanks to residents like Dennis that we have access to amazing history all around us. Our Ladies who Lunch declared ‘the best lunch’ that they have had in ages! Find out where they visited inside and I would suggest you book your table early as its sure to be popular with our readers. As usual the “What’s On” section on our website is packed full of details of everything going on in the area. To find out more and to add details of an event you may be organising (or helping to organise) do hop onto our website www.village-people.info. It’s fast becoming the one-stop shop to keep up to date with “What’s On” locally. I’d like to sign off by wishing everyone a fabulous festive time over December and do keep this magazine handy as it lasts the whole of January too. We’ll be back early February with our spring issue. Best wishes from your independent trio of hard working girls ;-)

NORFOLK BUSINESS GETS A TWITTER BOOST FROM THEO PAPHITIS Catherine Gray Origami, a Norwich based fi rm, firm, has received a business boost from retail entrepreneur Theo Paphitis. The owner, Catherine, tweeted Theo about her origami sculpture and gift business during ‘Small Business Sunday’ and was one of six weekly winners to gain a retweet by Theo to his 500,000 Twitter followers. The weekly initiative, set up by Theo in 2010, now has 1700 #SBS winners and supports small businesses in the UK. Catherine said, “I work full-time for the NHS as well as running my own business. This year I took the leap from attending local art and craft events to supplying shops and galleries up and down the country but I can still be found at many local events in the Norfolk area. It is great
to have support from Theo.” Anyone looking for a re-tweet from Theo should tweet him about their business on Sunday between 5 PM and 7.30 PM and include the hashtag #SBS.

FIRST PINT AT THE GARBOLDISHAM FOX FOR NINE YEARS A pint was last served in The Garboldisham Fox in February 2007. But on Saturday 8 October, the pub was formally re-opened albeit for one afternoon only. It was a grand re-opening; the first barrel of beer was delivered by horse and dray cart, followed by speeches from Garboldisham Director Peter Smith and local MP Liz Truss. The ribbon was cut, 350 people piled in and the beer flowed. All this was achieved after a nine year effort by the villagers to buy the
pub, in order to prevent it from being turned into housing. The pub was recently made a community asset and the committee has sprung into action. It won’t be fully open for at least 18 months as there is £300,000 of refurbishment needed, but it will be open from December as a micro pub at weekends to raise money and awareness. Visit the Facebook page for more information or to get involved.

RSPB LAUNCHES WINTER ROBIN FUN RUN IN NORWICH

Speedy Christmas Cake
his is a really simple, really quick and really delicious Christmas cake recipe. It’s especially good if you’ve forgotten to make one weeks ago! Make sure you use good quality mincemeat – the cheaper ones can be too loose.
Ingredients 450g quality mincemeat 225g wholemeal flour 150g dark brown sugar 175g mixed dried fruit 3 level teaspoons baking powder 150g softened butter (unsalted) 50g chopped walnuts 3 large eggs Grated zest of a small lemon and a small orange You’ll also need a 20cm round cake tin, greased and lined with greaseproof paper!
Method: ● ● ●
●
●
Pre-heat the oven to gas mark 3 (170°C) Break the eggs into a large mixing bowl and add all the other ingredients. Ideally, sift the flour in to give it a good airing, tipping in the bran bits after sieving. You can either now beat everything together with a wooden spoon, if you’re feeling energetic, or use an electric hand whisk, which will be quicker. Either way, ensure it’s all thoroughly mixed. Spoon the mixture into the tin and level it off with the back of a spoon.
●
●
● ●
At this point you could decorate with whole blanched almonds – simply arrange them prettily on the top (about 100g-125g should be plenty). Bake the cake for about 90 minutes. Depending on your oven the cake might need another 30 minutes. To test, just press the cake lightly in the middle, if it springs back, it’s ready. Let the cake cool in the tin for 30 minutes before turning it out onto a wire rack. Once cool, store in an airtight tin until you can’t wait any longer.
If you feel inclined, and have time, you can ‘feed’ the cake with your favourite tipple - brandy works especially well! Just prick the top of the cake with a skewer and spoon over a teaspoon of brandy every week or so. Merry Christmas from all of us at Village People!

St George’s Dementia Support Group
t George’s Dementia Support Group in Upper Stoke Holy Cross is an entirely voluntary organisation offering support, information and advice to people suffering from dementia – and their carers – in a friendly and supportive social venue. The group offers friendship, emotional support, refreshments and a variety of enjoyable activities to inform, stimulate and entertain, plus occasional subsidised group excursions.
The sessions are very positive and have a happy atmosphere. They are held on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month from 10am to 12 noon at St George’s Hall, Long Lane, Upper Stoke Holy Cross, NR14 8ND. More volunteers are always needed, so get in touch if you can help – no experience needed. For further details about joining the group or becoming a volunteer, call 01508 493661 or simply drop in to one of the meetings.
They host musicians like Roger Eno to entertain members and the sing-a-longs are especially good for memory stimulation. Some members enjoy a range of craft activities like making Christmas cards and decorations, whilst others prefer jigsaws or a good chat over coffee and biscuits. The group also organises a carer’s meeting to provide invaluable sharing of ideas and practical support. Representatives from other organisations come along to give up-to-date information about the support available to dementia sufferers.

Ladies Who Lunch
THE FOUNDRY PLANT CENTRE, ON A140 On A140, Tasburgh, Norwich, NR15 1NS • 01508 470357 • www.foundryplantcentre.co.uk The Foundry Plant Centre is on the A140 between Tasburgh and Newton Flotman. It’s a fast stretch of road and the main buildings are set well back, so it’s easy to whizz past – make sure you check the website for directions first! The coffee shop is clean, smart, bright and friendly. It actually offers a much wider range of food than other coffee shops, with sandwiches, jacket spuds and paninis, as well as proper cooked lunches like we had. Having spent more than I should on plants and bulbs, we retired to the café and ordered. I chose the salmon, new potatoes and salad, and my friend had a vegetarian chilli with rice and a salad garnish. As the café is not licensed we bought cool fizzy elderflower drinks but we were assured that we could bring our own alcoholic drinks if we wished. The staff were obviously very happy and therefore cheerful and willing. There are tables outside but the weather was just too ‘challenging’to use them so we sat inside. The tables in the café each had fresh flowers, and at least half the tables were filled with customers. By the time we left the place was totally full – and that was on a Monday. When the food arrived we were both surprised at the size of the servings. My beautifully cooked salmon was generously proportioned, and my friend’s chilli was carefully balanced with the portion of rice, her salad‘garnish’was plentiful, and the chilli was not too fiery. Pudding! Oh how could I resist the idea of treacle sponge with ice cream? My friend had spotted a large chunk of chocolate, courgette and walnut cake and I eased
16
her conscience by telling her that the courgette qualified as one of her five-a-day. My sponge was soaked in syrup – oh bliss! The fabulous old-fashioned taste of it reminded me of my granny’s treacle sponge; I could have cried! The chocolate cake was not over-sweet as it sometimes can be and not a crumb remained. Going back to the counter, I was pleased to notice that all the food preparation was done in plain sight with the salads being made to order. The bottom line was £36, which was great value. Best lunch for ages and great plants too!

Hatches, Matches & Despatches
F
Sarah Doig continues her exploration of old, local newspapers, this time looking at how our ancestors reported on births, deaths and marriages.
rom the very first local newspapers in the early 1700s through to the present day, one of the constant features has been a column reporting on recent births, marriages and deaths. And other news items in older papers show how people in this region reported the unusual occurrences of “hatches, matches and despatches”. In the late eighteenth century, there was a high infant mortality rate. Parents viewed the survival of their new-born baby as a real blessing and so the arrival of healthy twins was in itself a newsworthy event. The following account in the Bury and Norwich Post of 27 July 1791 celebrates a series of births and also allows some humour to creep in: The following rather extraordinary births have lately taken place in one parish. On the 4th ins. Mrs Felgate of Bildeston was delivered on twins, a boy and girl; on Monday the 11th, the wife of Mr John Hobart, schoolmaster, of the same place, presented him with a boy and girl; and on Monday the 18th, Mrs Ward had also twins, a boy and girl. Several ladies in the above town being in a pregnant state, their husbands are said to look very grave on the occasion. On the subject of marriage, an article in the Diss Express of 30 November 1928 reminds us of a time before easy communication by telephone, text and messaging. It tells of an unhappy couple – Miss Bendall of Walcot Green, Diss and Mr William Potter of Wortham - who, with their best man, bridesmaids, friends and family, waited in Diss parish church for a wedding ceremony which was
set to take place at 2.30pm on Saturday. But, to the dismay of all, no clergyman put in an appearance. Despite “feverish efforts” to find the priest who was supposed to officiate (or indeed any clergyman In 1928 a couple were left standing who might be able at the altar in Diss parish church to stand in for him), the ceremony had to be postponed until the following day, after the wedding reception had already taken place. And this rather disturbing report in the Bury Post in 1839 tells a gruesome tale of body-snatching, where graves were robbed and the corpses sold for medical dissection: On Saturday the body of a child aged seven years, the daughter of Robert Whitehead, was interred in the churchyard at Ixworth. On the Thursday following, in consequence of the sinking of the earth after the rain the grave was examined, when the coffin was found securely screwed down, but on opening it, the shroud alone remained, the body having been carried off. What renders this act more audacious and more revolting is that poor Whitehead’s cottage adjoins the churchyard. Such occurrences of this lucrative occupation of body-snatching were thankfully very rare.

Selling your house at Christmas?
am often asked when the best time to sell is. A decade ago, the answer was quite simple, the market was always at its most active in the spring and autumn. Traditionally the spring market was the most buoyant with good weather and buyers wanting to move in time for the summer and new school term starts in September. However, the way we search for property has changed considerably over the past few years. Over 99% of properties are listed online with the various property platforms and the majority of buyers start their search there.
have recovered from the chaos of Christmas and the spare time allows them to consider a new property. So in summary, any time is a good time to sell your property and due to the peak in online traffic post-Christmas, it is a great time to be sure your property reaches as many potential buyers as possible.
With thanks to Jonathan Wood, Manager and Valuer at Sowerbys
I must stress though, it is still so very important to register with agents, as often properties are sold prior to them ever coming to the open market. We get to know our applicants well and it is often the case that a property type, style or even location that an applicant has said they wouldn’t consider turns out to be their perfect home. The online property portals have now made searching for a property quicker and all at your fingertips. However, there are peaks and troughs. The summer months tend to see a drop in activity as a sector of the market goes on holiday. A peak that will surprise you is the increase in activity over the Christmas period. The leading property website reports that they see the highest level of annual traffic from Boxing Day onwards. Would be house hunters

Christmas Jottings from Ken
ashions come and fashions go. For most of the year any member of the conifer family is undeservedly out of vogue, but come December a select few of this diverse club become the most sought-after style statement. So much so, these generally overlooked plants are not even destined for a chilly garden but brought indoors to be the star attraction, bedecked with lights and dressed to delight. Yes, the humble Christmas tree is the ‘must have’ Christmas accessory! Choosing a real tree to share your home with over the festive season should be a fun experience, but with so many outlets offering all sorts of trees, here’s a few pointers to help you select your own special model U Know your limits… before setting off, measure the space you have available for your display, as tree sizes can be amazingly deceptive in different surroundings.
U Select your tree type… the traditional Christmas tree is the Norway Spruce which has a lovely pine fragrance, but as it suffers needle loss easily when warm it’s more suited to cooler rooms. These days an elegantly-tiered ‘non-drop’ tree such as Nordman Fir is ideal for family homes, its fragrance is fresh, and it really holds on to its soft glossy needles! U Fresh is best… once felled a tree starts to deteriorate, so buy a locally-grown one to ensure it was cut as late as possible. All of our cut Nordman Fir are Norfolk grown, whereas many large retailers
have trees transported in from overseas, cut many weeks before you see them. U Choose early… even if you’re not ready to take your tree indoors it’s a good idea to select the best shape and size for your home while there’s plenty of choice. Stand your tree temporarily in a bucket of water in a sheltered spot outside and remove its net stocking. U Take your time… bring the family and look through as many trees as you can in your chosen size range (every one if you wish!) Get someone to hold different trees out and give them give a spin to find their best side until you find the one for you. We’re happy to help if required. U Look before you buy… never buy a Christmas tree that you haven’t seen out of its netting and viewed from all sides, that way you’ll be sure you know what you’re getting. We’ll net your tree to protect it and to make transport home easy, or we can arrange delivery. U Keep it fresh… saw a thin slice off the bottom of the trunk (we can do this for you as well) and secure your tree in a stable water-retaining stand, position it away from radiators and open fires and check the water level regularly as real trees enjoy a good drink at Christmas! U Pay the right price… if you’re comparing prices, make sure you also compare quality (we’re excellent at both!) There’s nothing like having a real Christmas tree to enhance your home, but why not go the whole way and welcome your guests with a fresh fir wreath on the door, and some beautiful houseplants dotted about indoors. After all, there should be nothing artificial about Christmas, so make a real fashion statement, not a fashion flop! Merry Christmas!
Cheers, Ken

PLOT
AS TEMPERATURES DROP, MAKE SURE YOUR GARDEN IS PROTECTED FROM THE COLD
IN THE ORCHARD Now is a good time to prune your apple and pear trees to encourage growth next season. Use a clean, sharp pair of secateurs to avoid damaging your trees. Winter is also a good time to prune grape vines, but avoid pruning cherries and plums until summer to prevent diseases from taking hold. It’s also a good time to plant blueberries, which will grow best in acidic soil. Protect soft fruit trees from the winter weather
with insulation. Cover the tips of fig tree branches with straw or fleece to protect them from frost and position clear polystyrene over peaches and nectarines to protect them from rain. Use glue bands or greasebands on the trunks of your fruit trees to stop winter moths from laying their eggs in the branches. When they hatch in spring, the caterpillars will eat leaves, blossom and developing fruit, so it’s best to stop them now.

IN THE FLOWERBEDS
ON THE VEGETABLE PATCH It’s time to harvest your last vegetable crop and protect any remaining plants against the cold. Harvest your final leeks and parsnips before the soil freezes. Clear yellowing or dead foliage from your winter brassicas, asparagus and Jerusalem artichokes. These are no use to the plant and may encourage pests and disease if not removed. Divide clumps of rhubarb and replant to give it a new lease of life. Cover remaining brassicas with netting to protect them from birds. Also be prepared to
protect your plants with fleece or straw on colder nights; hardy salad crops like winter gem lettuce and any remaining leeks will benefit from some insulation. Prepare for next year by digging empty borders and piling on the manure – the worms will break up any clods of soil. You can also prepare the ground for growing beans next year. Dig a trench and fill it with compostable kitchen waste, which will rot down and create a perfect environment for your beans.
In this weather, most flowering plants need protection. But frost is actually essential for some alpine plants, which need freezing temperatures in order to germinate. January is your last chance to sow these plants. Sweet peas can also be sown this month and lily bulbs can be planted in pots and borders during milder spells of weather. If you haven’t already, move any tender plants in to the conservatory or greenhouse to protect them from the cold. Your pots may need protection as well as your plants – group them together next to a south-facing wall and wrap them in fleece to stop them from cracking. Some of your pots may need watering – check the compost beneath the surface to see if it feels dry. Your pots should remain moist; not too wet and not too dry. To prevent pots from sitting the wet after lots of rainfall, raise them onto bricks to allow some drainage. Finally, plan ahead for spring by browsing catalogues of summer-flowering bulbs and stocking up on all those garden shed essentials!

PART 5
The Stowaway cat In Part 4, Su had an embarrassing run in with her neighbour’s washing machine. This time, she’s getting ready to go on a date – as long as Milly the cat doesn’t get in the way…
I
suppose it was because I didn’t think of Graham as a potential replacement for Roger that I did not give much thought to the proposed lunch date. There was none of the usual agonising over what to wear, or being ready way ahead of time. But on the morning of the date, I suddenly began to feel a bit nervous. It suddenly occurred to me that Graham might be hoping that this was the start of something big: I knew it never could be and was just running through a few stock excuses for not going, when Milly bounced in. I had just dialled Graham’s number and then chickened out and put the phone down before it had begun to ring. “Anybody important?” she asked. “Just Graham. We’re going out to lunch, remember?” “Well, don’t forget breakfast if you’re going out.” “I really don’t think I can face anything.” “Er ... my breakfast! Whatever is the matter with you?”
with water lilies and dragonflies. Now it was beginning to leak, but the remaining dampness round the edge still attracted small creepy-crawly things. I was watching her through the kitchen window and she seemed to be stretching forwards and backing away, at the same time. Her gaze was intense, and when I looked at what she was inspecting I sympathised entirely with the look of horror on her face. It was a snake. Long, thin and sinister, all 14 inches of it. The top part was standing upright and weaving from side to side – hissing probably. I ran outside to make sure no-one got hurt – the snake or Milly. She was just beginning to dismiss the idea of it forming part of her dinner, when it lunged slightly and gave one last spit at her. She ran across the lawn and up a tree. That would have been enough for any sensible cat, but just to be on the safe side she leapt from the tree to the bedroom windowsill. And that was when she got completely stuck… Part 6 continues in the next issue. Copyright Susan Lidster
“I’m not sure I really want to go now.” I said sombrely. She wasn’t really listening. “Well, make your mind up, I’ve got things to do outside.” And with that she bounced back out through the cat flap. Milly spent the rest of the morning quietly mooching about the garden, concentrating on the pond area. It used to be a large, healthy, productive pond

A day in the life of a registered veterinary nurse This issue, Emily Philpot from Uplands Way Vets Ltd walks us through a day in the life of a veterinary nurse. 8:30am Everyone arrives at the clinic to get started for the day. We start to get all the equipment ready for the operations that are booked in and then admit all the patients as they arrive for their appointments. As the patients come in we give them a check over and settle them into their kennel. 10:30am A dog with vomiting and diarrhoea has been admitted from the vet consultations so we put him onto intravenous fluid therapy and take some x-rays to try and shed light on what the problem might be. 11am A tiny kitten is brought in from a lady who found her alone on the pavement in the rain. She is quite cold and very hungry so we promptly warm her up and bottle feed her with some special powdered kitten milk. It doesn’t take long before she has a lot to say! 12:15pm All the operations are finished so theatre and the prep room are cleaned down and tidied. Keeping the clinic clean, tidy and ready is paramount as we never know when we may have emergencies that come in. Lunchtime Inpatients are walked outside,

fed and watered. The consultation rooms are cleaned down after morning consultations and everything is restocked. 2:30pm A ring tailed lemur is brought in for an emergency operation. It is anaesthetised so the vet can give it a proper examination and establish exactly what needs to be done. It is our job to monitor the anaesthetic, clip the hair and clean the area so it is prepared for surgery. 4:30pm We catch up on our administrative responsibilities and make an order to replenish all stock that has been used during the day. 6pm There’s a late admission of a dog with a possible pyometra – a very common and serious uterine infection. The nurse who is on call has to stay behind to take a blood sample and run it in our in-house laboratory so the vet can try and make a diagnosis. It may be a long evening… With thanks to Emily Philpot from Uplands Way Vets Ltd

he all new Renault Mégane GT 205 is a frenetic French fiend on the straights and on twisty turns of tarmac, too.
tailpipe on – the twin exhaust look does work very well indeed.
Like many warm-hatches, this car can actually be used as family motor, although the rear seats are perhaps better for the short of leg or for the kids. The boot is top-notch, though, and will fit a pram and the shopping in, no probs.
The Renault Mégane GT 205 is one of a kind when it comes to its interior touchscreen. It’s the only car in its segment to house a vast portrait oriented 8.7-inch screen. This is accompanied by other tech that raises the bar even higher. Kit includes traffic sign recognition, launch control and attractive LED headlights.
Priced at only £25,500, Renault is bound to attract punters to this fourth generation of its 20-yearold Mégane range. High points include a 1.6-litre petrol-turbo power unit, derived from Renault’s Clio RS 200.
The Renault Mégane GT 205 sounds as awesome as it performs. Although, like the dummy exhaust, the sound isn’t all real. Some of the racing refrains are cleverly fed into the cabin through the car’s speakers.

though; I did for about five-minutes, but soon left it to the capable EDC transmission to do its job. Zigzagging my way across some of Britain’s rural routes, it became obvious just how capable the all-new Renault Mégane GT 205 is on corners. Light, hope and mercy for young carers Norfolk journalist, Sandie Shirley, spotlights the inspiring stories of men and women from the region and beyond that have seen them reach for victory. For more stories visit: www.refreshingwaters.co.uk
J
At the time, Sallie decided to open her front room to a handful of children with a box of Pringles and a video to provide shared respite but it soon paved the beginning for a far wider plan.
Connects & Co began with a modest £2000 grant. Today it supports children, teenagers and young adults who care for parents, siblings or both through six support groups in Norwich and Dereham.
There are currently 130 club members (and a waiting list of 40) from a diverse mix of backgrounds. Their lives are marked with growing confidence and purpose as difficulties are shared with fun, stressfree activities that include bowling, skating, crafts and residential adventure breaks. There are also workshops around bullying, self-esteem and sexual and mental health.
esus is the light of the world and the reason for the Christmas season. That life-changing message burns bright in the heart of Sallie Boyd – every day of the year. Her boundless Christian faith helps chart a course of light, hope and mercy through darkness and despair with a ground-breaking charity for young carers that she launched 16 years ago.
“Many are child carers who have been lonely and bullied but God has given us the ability to deal with these fragile, delicate lives which are so easily shattered. It is a privilege to build their trust and confidence as God uses us as a bridge of love,” says the Norwich street pastor and mum of six. The work, built on prayer and care, is not for the faint-hearted. “We are on call 24 hours, seven days a week and the lives of young carers are extremely challenging. These vulnerable young people often face a murky underworld of incredible darkness. Every way they turn it seems the pressures of this world try to suck them under but we have an opportunity to be real, open and honest so they know that they are cared for and accepted,” says Sallie. “It is not hard to love them and perhaps we love the most difficult kids the most.” As a child, Sallie cared for her seriously ill mother and a brother with a heart condition. Years later her own children supported her when she was diagnosed with ME, fibromyalgia and carpel tunnel syndrome.
46
Sallie’s vision has won favour, recognition and financial backing for the non-statutory charity, and its monthly £6,500 running costs, as she has networked with outside agencies to help forge a ‘lifeline’ for youngsters and their families. “There is a unique plan and purpose for these youngsters’ lives; they have a story and voice to share that can make a difference. Now many have the wings to fly. Some have moved to Scotland, Bristol or Leeds. Others have gone to university or taken-up nursing or caring professions while another is a staff member at Connects,” says Sallie. Visit www.connectsandco.co.uk for more info.

The new owners are very welcoming and the food, ales and wine continue to be a very high standard. They seem determined to take it forward and even improve on its excellent food and atmosphere.

Help us feed poor sick animals in care this Christmas! Please give a donation to help sick animals get a decent meal this Christmas. Wetnose Animal Aid has been raising funds for 16 years to help animal rescue centres in the UK. With a 40% drop in donations and more than 117,000 strays in our kennels, we are now raising funds for centres like the 2 below and many more.
Why should we care?
Without these rescue centres and the dedicated people that run them, animals would be a lot worse off. Now the police do not take in strays, rescue centres are getting full up before the holiday seasons even start.
Every hour 12 more dogs will become a stray! MAKE A DONATION TODAY

Walking Norfolk This issue, David Atthowe of Nomadic Lion tells the story of walking 200 miles around Norfolk for charity.
W
e have just finished walking 200 miles in 19 days right around Norfolk in aid of local charity Musical Keys. Musical Keys offer music and arts activities to disabled people across Norfolk. Our organisation is called Nomadic Lion and we are “walking across countries to share happiness and joy of arts with all.” We have completed two previous projects; Walking Malaysia, 700 miles in 48 days and Walking Borneo, 1400 miles in 5 months.

via Salhouse, Ranworth and Upton broads. We followed the Norfolk Coastal Path all the way from Happisburgh round to Hunstanton. From Hunstanton we made our way to Kings Lynn before coming down south to Thetford. From Thetford we finished off our journey in a big loop back at Norwich.
I was born and bred in Norfolk and decided to bring the walking back home to good ol’ Norfolk. We partnered with Musical Keys on the project as they are a very small charity that have a very direct and tangible effect on the lives of families with disabled members.
Throughout the journey we were blown away by the generosity of the people of Norfolk. Everywhere we went people gave us a pound or two as they walked past without us ever having to ask for money. People would walk pass us and seeing our bizarre trolley, red, gold and green flag ask what we were doing? Within a couple of minutes of explaining people were reaching for their pockets to make a donation.
Disabled people using Musical Keys’ services improve their social skills, motor skills, speech, and gain so much from each and every session. They offer a fantastic support network for families effected by disabilities and have become a community of friendly and supportive people that are always happy to welcome new members.
We were also warmly received by pubs, restaurants and cafes across the county. We would explain what we were doing and 9 times out of 10 the owner would give us a meal or a cup of tea to help us on our way. We managed to save over £100 extra through this generosity which we were able to add to the donation total.
Our journey began at home in Thorpe St. Andrew from where we made our way out to the coast
I am a keen photographer and try to get out and about around Norfolk as much as possible for
photography. Yet despite this we found countless new locations, landscapes and sights that we never knew were there. By walking on foot we took the time to slowly explore each and every area, and noticed lots of small and quirky things that just wouldn’t have been noticed if passing in a car. We were shown incredible hospitality throughout the walk but the community which came out and showed us the most support was the seaside town of Sheringham. We spent a night at the Lighthouse church who kindly allowed us to stay and brought us some delicious fish and chips. The next morning as we walked through the town we noticed how everyone was saying good morning to each other but they all seemed to know each other on a name-by-name basis. It felt like a truly connected community where people still looked out for one and another. We stopped off at Roy Boy’s cafe to ask if he might consider sponsoring our breakfast, we had barely finished explaining what we were doing when Roy smiled and said “Sure, please take a seat”. As we left the cafe we met Colin Seal, a key figure in the community and one of the key members of Sheringham’s community art projects. He spent 20 minutes giving us a guided tour of the town and explaining all the incredible projects they have going on. Colin and other local people have been doing an amazing job of revitalising the town and adding new colour and art everywhere, from the massive mural down on the seawall, to projects in local schools and street art around the town. We set out with a fundraising target of £1000 which we managed to reach in just the first first week! We ended up raising £2070 for Musical Keys, all thanks to the generosity of the people of Norfolk. A big thank you to each and everybody who was a part of the journey.
To follow the journey or to see what we got up to here in Norfolk please follow us on social media: Facebook: www.facebook.com/nomadiclion Twitter: @nomadic_lion Instagram: Nomadic Lion www.nomadiclion.com
We received a lot of donations online and will be keeping our Total Giving page up. If anybody would like to make a donation please visit: www. totalgiving.co.uk/appeal/nomadiclion What’s next for us? Walking India, starting March 2017, we are planning to walk over 3,000 miles right around the country in aid of CRY India, an NGO working to improve education in the country.

his book romps through the rolling countryside and along the shingled coastline of Suffolk, unearthing the curious along the way. Sandwiched between ecclesiastical penances handed down to adulterers and fornicators, and the odd porcelain incendiary bombs commemorating the Zeppelin raids, is an alphabetical cornucopia of strange, spooky and mysterious facts about the county. Is the supposedly ancient game of dwile flonking quite so old? What did writers like Pepys and Defoe say about Suffolk cheese? Which tower was probably just built to curry favour with the monarch? And who was the unknown, self-taught archaeologist who made one of the most significant finds of all time? The A-Z of Curious Suffolk is a book to dip into, unless of course you can’t wait to turn the page and read more!
Norfolk’s War Frank Meeres
Amberley £14.99
W
ar sent Norfolk men all over the globe. Women went into the factories, children went enemy plane and ship spotting on the coast, houses were requisitioned as hospitals and Zeppelins dropped bombs from the sky; life in Edwardian Norfolk changed forever. Archivist historian Frank Meeres shows how everyone did their bit by gathering together a collection of personal letters, diaries and images written by and relating to Norfolk people who rose to the challenge to defend their county, city and country. Jack Kier of Sheringham Hall wrote to his mother-in-law, “In a captured German dugout the luxury is compared to Heydon Hall, the size of the bunker to Dereham Corn Hall and food and cigars are plentiful.” A fascinating collection of private and personal accounts from Norfolk, this book really lets the voices of the First World War speak again.

Capability Brown in Norfolk Edited by Sally Bate
The Norfolk Gardens Trust
£15.99
E
dited by Sally Bate and written by members of the Norfolk Gardens Trust Research Group, this is the first book to look at Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown’s work in the county. His three major Norfolk commissions – Kimberley, Langley and Melton Constable – each have their own chapter, describing the landscape history before Brown’s arrival in the 1760s before going on to look at his plans and documents which have survived. The book examines which of his proposals were carried out and the features still in existence today. Tom Williamson (School of Landscape History, UEA) has written an introductory chapter on Lancelot Brown, and ends the book by looking at other Norfolk sites with links to him and the fashion for park building in the eighteenth century. The text contains wonderful aerial photographs by Mike Page and photographs of paintings, plans and documents never seen in print before. This is an important record of Brown’s plans and achievements in Norfolk and has been written to coincide with the 300th anniversary of his birth in 1716.

ROGER OSBORNE
a Suffolk village boy Roger Osborne scored the winning goal for Ipswich Town in the FA Cup Final at Wembley in 1978 but his is no ordinary story. In fact there is magic in the whole of Roger’s background that caused him to arrive in the right place at the right time. Roger did not come through the usual football channels. He was born at Otley, 8 miles north of Ipswich, to a caring mother and cowman father with a family of 14 to bring up. His father worked long hours and was not interested in ‘kicking a bag of wind about’ so Roger made his own entertainment, and started his employment upon the land. At the age of 20 he was still playing village football and the real magic started to happen. Not only did Roger mark players such as Johan Cruyff ‘out of the game’ but opportunity led
him to play in the USA with his boyhood heroes before coming back to Colchester United for five more happy years. He then played local football again until he finally hung up his boots at 45. Now a new DVD has been released, which features over an hour of footage about Roger. Prepared by Neil Lanham, the DVD is available from www.oraltraditions.co.uk or by post for just £12. To order, send a cheque for that amount to Neil Lanham at The Swallows, The Street, Botesdale, IP22 1BP (£1 of which will be given to the charity ACTIVLIVES of which Roger is the patron). Determined on the field and self-effacing and contented off it, Roger epitomises all that is typical of the natural Suffolk character and is now never happier than when enjoying the company of his wife Margaret, their three sons, daughtersin-law and three grandchildren.
TRADITIONS OF SUFFOLK Over 100 DVDs and CDs of local Horsemen, Blacksmiths, Gamekeepers, Poachers, Horse Dealers, Gypsies, Stepdancers and traditional singers.

Improving your hearing in time for Christmas By Karen Finch rhad fshaa frsa, Audiologist at The Hearing Care Centre
T
here is nothing like the festive season with one social engagement after another. From the Christmas office party, drinks with friends and the buzz of the family gathering on the big day, December is a time for fun and social interaction.
If you or someone you know is struggling with hearing problems, don’t struggle through another festive season not being able to join in and have fun. I urge you to book a hearing test now and find out what could be done to help you in time for Christmas.
But is it? For those experiencing hearing loss, this can be something of an annual nightmare, causing a variety of communication issues!
Karen Finch is the Managing Director and lead audiologist at The Hearing Care Centre.
Imagine if you can, being unable to hear speech clearly because Christmas music is being played in the background or not being able to hear the excitement of children opening presents because they are all talking at once and you cannot separate the sounds clearly. Imagine dreading Christmas dinner on a large table with 15 other people because you won’t be able to hear what is being said around you.
The multi-award winning, family-run company has 22 centres across Suffolk and Norfolk. For more information visit www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk or call 01473 230330.
Over 119,000 people in Suffolk have a hearing loss but the number is far smaller for those who have sought professional help from their local audiologist. Hearing aids can make such a difference to someone’s quality of life at this time of year. Hearing aids are so much smaller and more discreet than they ever used to be and packed full of amazing features that will help during the festive period.

Babies at Peace
new community support group has launched in Diss for parents who have been bereaved through the loss of a baby. Whether it was through stillbirth, neonatal death or any other loss during pregnancy, Babies at Peace is designed to help. The group holds monthly support meetings at different places throughout South Norfolk on the first Wednesday of each month. These meetings are held at different venues to reach as many people as possible, offering support at such a difficult and vulnerable time. During these meetings there is no obligation to speak about your loss if you don’t want to, but it’s a safe space where you’ll be with people who understand if you do want to talk. The group also provides a memory keepsake service for parents as well as very special cuddle cots for parents able to bring their babies home with them for some time before saying goodbye. There were two successful fundraisers in October and more are planned. The team would like to say a huge

Dr. Hilary Jones’ Secrets to a
Healthy & Happy Winter Winterised workout
As the temperature drops and the days become darker, it can be easy to eat more, do less and go into ‘hibernation’ mode. But being proactive about our health is key to feeling great as well as looking great too.
It can be hard to find the motivation to make it to the gym when it’s cold outside, but it’s important to keep active during the winter. If you really can’t find the incentive to brave the elements, then aqua aerobics and swimming are great gentle exercises for boosting our physical health as well as our mental health.
Get checked
Socialising and spending quality time with friends and family is a central part of the festive season, so having a hearing check is key to ensuring you or a family member doesn’t miss out this Christmas. People with mild to significant hearing loss are between two and five times more likely to develop dementia so there’s ever more reason to seek help sooner.

Everything starts with breakfast
When we wake up in the morning our muscles and brain need fuel to face the day ahead. I love eating bircher muesli with oats, nuts, apples and berries or a smoked salmon omelette packed with protein, vitamin D and omega 3 essential fatty acids.
Drink up!
The cold weather and drying radiator heat can lead to dehydration and fatigue. Aim to drink 8 glasses of water a day or try hot water with a squeeze of lemon or fresh apple and a cinnamon stick for a festive twist.
Avoid the festive food coma
Wrap up warm
Gobbling down a large meal diverts blood from the rest of our body to our digestive system in order to break down food. Sensible snacking throughout the day can help you to avoid over-eating at dinner times.
Did you know that staying warm is a surprising secret to feeling merry? Being cold can make us feel sluggish because our bodily functions slow down in attempt to retain heat. So bundle up to feel recharged!

Q&A HEALTH Q:
My hair is thinning, dry, and dull and it won’t grow beyond a certain length – what can I do?
The condition of your hair can be linked to hormones. For example, falling oestrogen levels during the menopause can affect your hair, slowing its normal growth cycle.
A:
Stress can also affect your hair. We are all stressed in one way or another. Stress quickly reduces vitamin B levels in the body which are important for hair health. If our body is using vitamins and minerals to keep us going and to keep our energy levels up, it’s not going to have enough for our hair as well. The body is very sensible because hair, fur and beautiful nails are all decoration or embellishments of the body. If our body is struggling nutritionally, hair and nails are

not that important. So problem hair is a good indication that something is going amiss and you’re a little bit nutritionally low in certain vitamins and minerals. That’s low iron, low thyroid and low vitamin B and D. Good liver function and avoiding dehydration are very important for proper hair growth. If you’re finding that your hair is getting dry and brittle, increase your water intake and consider taking Milk Thistle complex by Bioforce – a few drops into water will really improve and support liver function.

Smart Money Secrets Keeping the cost of Christmas under control By Andrew Hagger independent personal finance analyst from www.moneycomms.co.uk
I
t’s so easy and convenient to put your shopping on your plastic in the run up to Christmas but it may be something you regret when the credit card statement thuds on the doormat in early January.
So this year, why not plan ahead to prevent the huge credit card bills and associated stress that can take the shine off your start to the New Year? The first task is to draw up a budget of how much you can realistically afford to spend on presents, Christmas food and going out. If needs be you can spread the financial burden by using a credit card offering 0% interest on purchases such as the Sainsbury’s Bank credit card which is interest free for 27 months. However, it’s best to not get too carried away, as you don’t want to still be paying for the Christmas tree, booze and presents come next July. One tried and tested money saving tip is to try and cut back on your food shopping during the first couple of weeks in December – by buying just the absolute essentials, not only will it save you some cash, but it’ll help you make space for your Xmas turkey and all those extra seasonal goodies.
you’re going to cut down on the cost of Christmas this year – either by imposing a limit on the amount you’ll spend or perhaps agreeing to only buy for the children. Alternatively rather than spending money on presents, you could design and send your own practical vouchers where you offer to give up your time to baby sit, provide a taxi service, clean the car or even walk the dog. It will cost you nothing but your time and a little creativeness. Be realistic and if you can’t afford it, don’t buy on the basis that you don’t want to lose face or are trying to keep up with the Jones’s – you won’t thank yourself for it when your January and February salary is all but wiped out paying back those Christmas excesses. Christmas is not about expensive presents, it’s a rare opportunity to relax and spend some quality time with your friends and family, so have a good time but don’t get into debt over it – it’s only one day and really not worth the stress.
Have a good rummage through your kitchen cupboards and your freezer and make use of some of what you already have; I’m sure you’ll find more than a couple of meals already there. Many of us have food buried at the bottom of the freezer that we’ve long since forgotten about so now’s an ideal time to use it up. Another way to keep the cost down is to agree with friends and relatives that

Evidence of badgers, such as this footprint may be seen. Please respect the presence of our largest carnivore, whose favourite ‘meaty’ food, is in fact earthworms. 1 The Marriott’s Way is a 26-mile long footpath, bridleway and cycle route. Following the route of two disused railway lines from Norwich to Aylsham, it is named after William Marriott who, for 41 years, was Chief Engineer and Manager of the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway (M&GNJR). The rural network of the M&GN was affectionately referred to as the ‘Muddle & Go Nowhere’ line!
We walked in mid-October with the first hints of Autumn: a few trees were turning and shedding leaves; those ‘winter thrushes’ – Fieldfares and Redwings were feasting on Hawthorn berries. Yet still, the last Africa-bound Swallows were seen ‘hawking’ insects along blackberry decorated hedgerows.
