I have to start with a BIG thank you to everyone for your congratulation messages. Even today – three months on from the announcement that we’d won Community/Lifestyle Magazine of the Year at the national Magazine Publishers’ Conference – we are still receiving congratulation messages from our dear customers and readers. What lovely people we get to work with! We’ve been working hard behind the scenes on our shiny new website that will go live in a few weeks. There’s not enough space here to tell you what exiting things are coming but let’s just say we’re getting bigger and better, as you would expect!
We’re now on Instagram! And we’re rewarding all our followers with the chance to win a £100 Waitrose/John Lewis voucher… so grab your phone and follow @vpmagazine to see what we get up to as we work on the magazines, nose at our lovely country offices and meet our office cats! And tag us in your pictures! We want to see the beautiful Norfolk and Suffolk villages you live in! What’s happening on your doorstep today? And where do you keep Village People in your home? Tag @vpmagazine and we’ll pop our favourites in the next issue. Do feel free to contact me with your thoughts and any ideas you have to continue to improve Village People. You can’t top
a night at top hat
Prepare to be dazzled by the sumptuous glamour of Hollywood’s golden age when the award-winning Top Hat returns to Norwich Theatre Royal from March 31 to April 11.
d
irect from the West End, where it won three coveted Olivier awards for Best New Musical, Best Choreography and Best Costumes, and the Evening Standard Award for Best Night Out, the show brings the tap-dancing magic of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers to the stage in one of the greatest dance musicals of all time.
Top Hat last graced the Theatre Royal stage in 2011, prior to opening in the West End in May 2012 where it played over 600 performances during a two-year run at the Aldwych Theatre. Now on a 47-week UK tour, Alan Burkitt will be donning a top hat, white tie and tail as American tap dancer Jerry Travers for the show’s 2015 return, along with Charlotte Gooch as Dale Tremont. Both have performed their roles in the West End. They are joined by the West End’s Clive Hayward who returns as Horace Hardwick, Rebecca Thornhill as Madge Hardwick, Sebastien Torkia as Alberto Beddini and John Conroy as Horace’s valet Bates. Top Hat’s Jerry is a famous American tap dancer who arrives in London to appear in his first West End show. He meets the irresistible Dale – the girl of his dreams – and follows her across Europe in an attempt to win her heart.
An uplifting and hugely funny romantic comedy which celebrates 1930s song and dance, the cast of 29 and 11 musicians wow the crowds with over 200 beautiful costumes, stunning art deco settings and breath-taking choreography. Packed full of Irving Berlin’s memorable music and lyrics, the hits include Cheek to Cheek, Top Hat, White Tie and Tails, Let’s Face the Music and Dance and Puttin’ on the Ritz. Nominated for four Academy Awards, RKO’s cinematic Top Hat was the most successful
picture of the nine movies Astaire and Rogers made together, breaking box office records and catapulting all five songs from the film into the top five places on the American Hit Parade.
Top Hat runs at Norwich Theatre Royal from Tuesday 31st March to Saturday 11th April 2015. Tickets are available from the Box Office on 01603 630000 or book online at

w
armth and cheeriness greeted us as we entered this large pub on Pulham Green; there was a lovely smell of wood smoke with foodie smells intermingling. Drinks in hand – beer for me and a lager for my pal – we were shown to a table, not too far from the roaring wood fire. There was an assortment of different seating arrangements; low easy-chairs with coffee tables; a beer barrel with two high stools, and many conventional table and dining chairs. If you go there anytime, look out for the “perch”, which is like a church misericord for elderly choristers… where people appear to be standing but are secretly half-sitting! The specials board and the menu combined did not offer an enormous number of dishes, but it was quite varied and it is the middle of winter. That said, there were three fish alternatives (and you know how I love fish) so I chose a four-fish pie with mashed potato and cheese on the top, with a salad garnish so large I didn’t imagine there would be any vegetables. My friend chose venison casserole, which she said was really tasty and came with French

bread and a salad. The unexpected vegetable dish arrived, offering plenty of kale, carrots, red cabbage, and swede – all good English country veg – which we shared between us. I think I have said before that I don’t like pies being served in the dish they have been cooked in – it was jolly hot! But my friend had an easier time of it; her casserole came in a gravy jug. Puds were a delight! I had decided on the crème brule but my friend ordered first so I hastily changed to the jam bread-and-butter pudding with custard, secretly hoping that it didn’t contain too many sultanas and raisins. Not a dried current in sight; just luscious raspberry jam, and dreamy custard with vanilla pod seeds in it. I scraped my plate clean. The crème brule came with a shortbread biscuit and my friend was so pleased to find it warm rather than the usual fridge-cold. Hot, strong, fresh black coffee followed and what’s more we got 10% off our food bill thanks

We reluctantly left this welcoming place – it’s been transformed recently and I think it will become the heart of the village – it was wonderful. Only one niggle: a hook on the back of the toilet door please; otherwise handbags have to go on the floor. Boudicca
Discover the iceni queen’s link with our region
t
he Queens Head pub in eye chose to have Boudicca as the face on their inn sign. Punters often ask about her, so they asked Village People to share her fascinating story...
Boudicca, also known as Boadicea, was queen of the Iceni tribe – the Celtic people who inhabited the northern part of East Anglia at the time of the Roman invasion 2,000 years ago.
The Romans rallied, however, and fought back. Boudicca’s army by this point might have numbered nearly a quarter of a million, but superior Roman discipline and organisation eventually triumphed. But, rather than being taken by the Romans, it is said Boudicca killed herself and her daughters.
When her husband, Prastutagus, the king of the Iceni, died he made the mistake of leaving half his kingdom to his two daughters and the other half to the Roman emperor. Perhaps he hoped this would win favour for his family and tribe… Under Roman law, however, daughters could not inherit, so the Romans decreed The Queen’s Head’s inn sign features the above illustration of Queen that all should pass to the Boudicca, taken from a stained glass window at Colchester Town Hall emperor. When Boudicca tried to challenge this, she was whipped like a common slave and her daughters were beaten and violated. This enraged Boudicca and the Iceni tribe; thus the revolt, which killed thousands and frightened “mighty” Rome, was begun.
The Romans stayed in Britain for another 400 years leaving Britain ready for its next, perhaps better known and better loved hero, Arthur. Arthur may or may not have been real, but Boudicca most certainly was. Some say she is buried in London under platform 13 of Kings Cross station and even now, 2,000 years on, many say her ghost rides her chariot through Norfolk and Suffolk!
Neighbouring tribes had long resented the presence of the Romans and quickly joined the huge 100,000 strong army, gathered together by Boudicca. She led them first to Camulodunum (Colchester), where Romans and their sympathisers were slain in their thousands, then on to Londinium (London) where, again, there was huge slaughter. The Romans had not seen the revolt brewing and had been concentrating on fighting the Druids on the isle of Mona (Anglesey). They were very nearly defeated and driven out of Britain altogether, rocked by the ferocity of Boudicca and her followers.

Village wanderings Cantley and the River Yare
It’s not hard to find Cantley – head for the ‘cloud-making chimney’ of the British Sugar factory! This circular walk starts at Cantley village hall. It continues between the settling ponds of the factory and drops down to the railway line. The route then follows the bank of the River Yare, before heading back to the village with open views across the marshes. Distance: approximately 4.35 miles. Using OS Explorer Map OL40. Start grid ref: TG 382045.

It was a bitingly cold, windy, wintery day when we walked. The activity around the factory was in stark contrast to the wildness of the river and marshes. A murmuration of starlings was a mesmerising sight against the setting sun.

A shop for the whole community
K
ett’s Books is an independent booksellers run by the community in the historic market town of Wymondham in South Norfolk.
It is a small, fully-functional independent bookshop, where browsers regularly discover books they didn’t know they wanted to read. The mix of books includes large children’s and local sections, as well as an interesting mix of history, fiction, non-fiction and reference books. Its curious range is fitting for a shop with a selection chosen by the volunteers who run it, explains Tracy Kenny, who manages the shop and was part of the group that set it up over a year ago. “Christmas Eve 2013, the owner of the bookshop that was here before retired and we felt like we had to save it – there isn’t another bookshop south of Norwich before Bury St Edmunds,” she said. “So a group of us met in the Cross Keys pub to explore whether we could run the shop. And the more we talked, the more we realised we could create something more than just a place to buy books – with our combined experience and energy, we could offer book groups, go into schools, advise on literacy, and even provide role models.”
The group formed a Community Interest Company, quickly raised funds and secured a lease. Since then, they have visited schools and given more than 300 books to schools, as well as running book groups for adults and pioneering a book group for junior school children. “Trading locally means that you’re growing the local economy, keeping a town centre alive, and even making sure somebody’s child gets their clarinet lessons,” says Tracy. “You may save a pound or two by shopping online, but we can usually get your book next day for no extra charge – and when did a web shopping service ever sit down with one of your kids and read a book to them or hear them practice their reading? This is what your get from shopping at Kett’s Books!”

Praise for an inspiring presenter and writer Pam Rhodes is best known as the face of the BBC’s Songs of Praise, bringing hymns to the nation for nearly thirty years. But did you know she’s a prolific writer as well? Her latest novel, If You Follow Me,, is the final instalment of the Dunbridge nbridge Chronicles trilogy. gy
“I wrote With Hearts and Hymns and Voice almost 20 years ago now. It came about when I was asked to write a book about Songs of Praise behind the scenes. In the end I decided that because people share their moving, sometimes traumatic, stories with me as an interviewer, those stories weren’t really mine to share again. I decided I’d make it a fictional book, and use some of the essence of those stories but not with the same characters and not in the same situation so it wouldn’t be based on anybody real.” Having travelled the country with the musical programme, Pam often feels inspired by the sense of community in the places she visits. Now on her ninth
novel, with books of quotations and about churches also to her name, Pam’s love of people and the ies incredible stories they carry with them has fuelled her passion for writing.
Photo: J. S. B-C Mower-A llard
Pam Rhodes has devoted her career to spreading the Christian message through Songs of Praise, and her first ever book, With Hearts and Hymns and Voice, was directly inspired by the stories she has heard during the show.
“The thing about Songs of Praise, and also about life in general, is that there are moments where you laugh out loud, especially when you get lots of people in the community together. You get the chemistry between people which can be very good fun.
“In a geographical sense, there are so many lovely places that I visit – beautiful cities like Bath or York with their magnificent church buildings. It’s been a very rich experience, and it’s probably also been the basis of my writing as I have recently mostly written about church communities.” As Pam explains, a church community doesn’t exclusively mean the congregation. “If You Follow Me is about a community, not just about the people in the church: any minister will tell you that they can be by somebody’s bed side if they’re dying or talking to a family where there has been a huge argument – or they might be dealing with people with nowhere to live or who are struggling with money.” With so many literary possibilities inspired by everyday life, Pam says she already has another book idea on the go… so we’d best let her get back to the next novel! If You Follow Me by Pam Rhodes is out now.

Garden Jottings from Ken How are the New Year resolutions holding out? Did you really agree to exercise more, spend more time with your family, give up junk food, cut out all chocolate and alcohol . . . you fool! The last two may be impossible, but all or some of the first three are achievable by growing your own fruit and veg.
i
f you’ve never grown food before, don’t be afraid, it’s not difficult, nor does it require expensive equipment. Start small and keep it simple; you don’t need acres of land (unless you’re very hungry) as many fruit and vegetable plants look highly ornamental grown amongst the borders or in containers, but if space is available create a separate plot, ideally in an open, sunny position. Dig the area over, removing all plants, weeds and roots – don’t rush, this should be pleasure not pain! Incorporate compost or well rotted farmyard manure (available from us in nice clean bags) to add structure and goodness to the soil prior to sowing and planting in April/May. Get yourself off to a good start by selecting seeds now, many can be raised early indoors on a warm sunny windowsill, or in a greenhouse if you have one (speak to us if you haven’t). What should you grow? That’s up to you; obviously grow something that you like. Beans are one of the easiest and most rewarding crops, both climbing french and runner beans look fabulous grown up stately wigwams, grow sweet peas with them for more colour and better pollination. Try mixed lettuce and other salad leaves, or radishes and beetroot, sow small rows every few weeks for continuous supply. Carrots love deep sandy soils, courgettes and marrows like it rich and sunny. We’ll have young tomato, cucumber (including all female), leek, squash and many other plants available shortly if you’re not keen on the seed-sowing stage!
Of course, as with all Whatever fruit and veg resolutions, willpower and work are required. you choose to grow, You must tend your you’ll be rewarded with crops, keep weeds at bay, a taste sensation and provide food and water, unrivalled freshness which etc. Your produce patch will contain the tastiest will impress not only you, plants in your garden, but also your friends so make sure you get to and family! enjoy them, deal with any pests promptly, especially slugs and snails. Try to be organic, particularly if you have to resort to sprays for certain problems. Call into The Garden Enclosure for helpful advice and all you’ll need for ‘growing your own’!
Cheers, Ken
The Garden Enclosure at Banham
for growing appetites!
Onions and shallots are simple to grow from immature bulbs called sets, which are available now together with potato tubers. Grow an ‘early’ variety of seed potato as they’re less prone to problems and they’ll crop when prices are still high in the shops, if space allows add a ‘main’ crop which is lifted later and is suitable for storing. Fruit trees and bushes should be planted now and once established they’ll produce large crops for you every year – that’s a lot of puddings sorted!

LESS CHAT, MORE CHIT “Chitting” is the process of encouraging seed potatoes to sprout roots by exposing them to sunlight before planting them out. It is essential to do this in order to produce good crops of “first early” potato varieties.
PLOT
TIME TO SPRING TO LIFE
At the beginning of February, set your seed potatoes out in egg boxes or trays with the “rose-end” facing up (the end with the most eyes in it). Place them in a light, frost-free room and leave for about four to six weeks. Once they have sprouted roots in early March, they are ready to be planted out. As their name suggests, first early potatoes grow to maturity fastest – about 100 days from planting – so they will produce lovely little new potatoes in June.

TRANSFORMATION OUTSIDE YOUR WINDOW
The drab, dull, cold grey outside is soon to be a distant memory, for the first of this year’s flowers are beginning to show their colourful little heads. There’s something special about the first signs of spring, so here’s our early-budding favourites.
Narcissus February Gold - this bright yellow, trumpet-shaped daffodil has outer petals slightly lighter than the rest. When planted in distinct groups the effect is even better.
Tulipa saxatilis - this pink tulip opens wide in the sunshine (when there is any!) to show its bright yellow centre. As the earliest tulip to appear, you can expect to see this beautiful flower from early March.
Galanthus nivalis - the common snowdrop is the first sign of life in early spring, flowering between January and April. These elegant little plants produce dainty, drooping white flowers that are commonly seen in the wild.
Anemone blanda - with large daisy-like flowers, most commonly in a purple-blue shade, this plant grows in well-drained soil, often below deciduous trees plants or in shady corners.
EARLY SPRING LAWN MOWING Regular trimming encourages grass roots to spread, so it is good to mow your lawn regularly throughout the year but less frequently in colder seasons. Once every two-to-three weeks is about right in early spring to encourage healthy, lush-looking grass and deter weeds. Check the blade of your mower is raised to about 5cm (just under 2ins) and aim to remove only the top third of grass as this retains nutrients stored in the leaf blade and protects the soil from sunlight, preventing weeds.

Protect our vulnerable hedgehogs
n the 1950s, it was estimated there were 36.5 million hedgehogs in Britain. According to the Peoples Trust for Endangered Species, we appear to have lost around 30 per cent of the population since 2002 and it is likely that there are now fewer than a million hedgehogs left in Britain.
If you find a collapsed, lifeless, “sleepy” or orphan baby hedgehog:
Hedgehogs in our country are declining at the same rate as tigers globally – at around 5 per cent a year – and they are in danger of becoming extinct in the future.
• Place the hedgehog tummy-down on top of the heat, then cover the hedgehog with another towel.
• Find a high-sided box and pop the hedgehog inside. • Fill a hot water bottle or other plastic, leak-proof bottle with hot – but not boiling – water and wrap the bottle in a towel.
• Make sure there is room in the box for the hedgehog to get off the heat. • Do not offer any food or water until you have spoken to a professional as sick hedgehogs can not digest until they have recovered.
For more information, visit Waveney Valley Hogspital’s website at hogspital.co.uk or call 07912 674844. Alternatively, call the British Hedgehog Preservation Society on 01584 890801.

Nip parasites in the bud
t’s the beginning of spring and the weather will soon be warming up, but with this comes better breading grounds for parasites.
There’s something special about the longer hours of sunshine and the first time you leave your winter coat behind to walk the dog. Most pets love it too – more opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors! However, cats and dogs in particular are very good at bringing parasites home with them from the fields, woodlands and overgrowth that they so dearly love to explore at this time of year. Unfortunately, parasites spread like wildfire and can make our pets very ill if preventative measures haven’t been taken against them. There are two important things to remember; use a good-quality product and make sure that the treatment term has not expired. Here’s why: Fleas - Their main food is blood from the animal they are living on and their saliva contains an ingredient that softens, or “digests” the animal’s skin for easier penetration and feeding. Flea saliva, therefore, is irritating and allergenic. It drives our pets – and us – mad itching as a result and can cause fur loss, soreness and a lot of discomfort. Flea infestations can lead to Flea Allergy Dermatitis amongst other illnesses. Ticks - These creatures belong to the same family as spiders and, like fleas, they feed

on the blood of animals. Ticks tend to go unnoticed when they first bite an animal and latch on to their skin because they are about the size of a pinhead at this stage. It is usually not until they have swollen with blood that they are spotted, but they can transmit diseases via their bite, such as Lyme disease. Mites - Unlike most other parasites, mites can only be seen with a telescope so it is not until symptoms appear that an infestation is noticed on a pet. Mites cause irritation and inflammation when they burrow into an animal’s skin to feed and lay their eggs, so owners are likely to see their pet scratching, licking, chewing, biting and rubbing parts of their body to relieve the itch. In addition to illness, this can lead to secondary problems such as bacterial infections in wounds. Worms - Pets that have eaten raw meat, contaminated faeces or grass, or have been around other infected animals, are at risk of contracting worms. Signs that a pet has worms include an increased appetite, diarrhoea, vomiting, weight loss and poor fur condition. Worm-infected pets are likely to be restless and, as with all parasites, must be treated quickly as they are at risk of disease. There are a variety of parasite prevention methods available so speak to a veterinary professional about the best treatment for your pet.

schoolmaster and schoolmistress
wanted for local workhouse The second in a series of articles about education in our region over the centuries, Sarah Doig takes a closer look at workhouse schools.
I
n the first years of Queen Victoria’s reign, our region witnessed the rapid construction of many workhouses for the poor. This was as a result of the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834, which changed the previous system whereby each parish was responsible for their own paupers, to the creation of new Poor Law Unions. The provision of new, purpose-built workhouses meant that paupers were no longer given money or provisions to support themselves in their own home. Instead, they were forced to enter the strict regime of the workhouse. Depwade Union workhouse in Norfolk was built in 1836. It was designed to accommodate up to 400 inmates. Families were split up on arrival and housed in separate wings for men, women, boys and girls. Under the 1834 Act, Poor Law Unions were required to provide at least three hours a day of schooling for workhouse children, and to appoint a schoolmaster and/or schoolmistress. The Board of Guardians in charge of the Depwade Union workhouse duly advertised for these positions in the Norfolk Chronicle newspaper in May 1847. All candidates had to be single persons between 25 and 40 years of age. The salary for the schoolmaster was to be £25 per annum and the schoolmistress was to receive £20 per year. Both were also given board and lodging in the workhouse. This package was a relatively attractive one for such teachers.
workhouse schools offered tuition in more practical skills as well as ensuring that they would be able to keep basic accounts, and write bills and invoices.

The quality of the education provided in workhouse classrooms varied considerably, but in some cases was probably better than was available in other types of school. It is also probable that many of these pauper children would have been required to help fathers working on the land or to stay at home to look after younger siblings while the parents went to work if they had been living out in their communities. So despite the harsh regime for inmates, many children undoubtedly benefitted from the schooling they received in the workhouse. Depwade Union Workhouse
The children in the workhouse school were taught “reading, writing, arithmetic, and the principles of the Christian Religion, and such other instruction as may fit them for service, and train them to habits of usefulness, industry and virtue”. For some poor children, the workhouse provided the only education they received. Many would eventually be apprenticed to a master tradesmen and many

Fly high
with the East Anglian Air Ambulance lottery Would you like the opportunity to win £25,000, AND help to save lives at the same time?
s
upporting the East Anglian Air Ambulance Lottery is one of the easiest and most sustainable ways to keep the charity flying and saving lives in the region. The EAAA lottery contributes to around 45 per cent of the charity’s income, so it is essential in order for it to continue its lifesaving work. For just £1 per week, you can enter the EAAA Lottery and be in with a chance of winning one of the 18 cash prizes available in each weekly draw, from £50 to £1,000. If that wasn’t exciting enough, you will automatically be entered into the accumulator prize which increases by £500 a week until it’s won – up to a whopping £25,000! Recently the accumulator reached an incredible £15,500. Tom Hamilton, 72, from Great Yarmouth, has supported EAAA for many years and won £1,000 in the lottery in August 2014. “I was taken
completely by surprise, but I am delighted to have won,” said Tom. “I’m not quite sure how we are going to spend it yet, but we are looking forward to taking a welldeserved holiday in the New Year!” EAAA Lottery Manager, Mike Burt, who has been working at the charity since February 2014, said: “It never ceases to amaze me how generous the people of East Anglia are when it comes to supporting the EAAA, and playing the lottery is a great way of showing support whilst having a little flutter and giving yourself a chance of winning a useful cash prize.” Playing could not be simpler! You can buy membership online, download a form on our website, eaaa.org.uk, or give us a call on 01603 489400. Players must be aged 16 or over.
Tom Hamilton won £1,000 with the EAAA Lottery
So if you fancy taking a chance – or you are looking for a present for someone who does – why not join a lottery which supports a service you may need someday?

Mulbarton women join international performer
to help suffering children
International performer, Philippa Hanna, is championing self-esteem in suffering children with the help of a group of women from Mulbarton Church and their hand-sewn raggedy dolls.
T
heir handiwork was presented to the singer-songwriter during a South Norfolk performance to boost the work of the Raggedy Doll Foundation that distributes hand-sewn dolls to children in hospices and hospitals with a message of god’s love. The acclaimed artist, who is currently touring the nation with Britain’s Got Talent 2014 winners, Collabro, took centrestage at Mulbarton Village Hall to tell her restoration story from a broken teenager to a woman of faith with the help of her song, Raggedy Doll. Pretty, blonde and talented, the young girl from Sheffield explained that she was a once a depressed adolescent who mostly watched TV, took Prozac and later escaped a difficult relationship. She says: “It is never too late to turn everything around after failure and difficulty and start again – my life is unrecognisable from a decade ago.”
any more – tiny bits of God’s plan followed as he put people and scriptures in my path and I saw that God created me with musical talent.” Her four albums, tours and book – Following the Breadcrumbs, charting her journey from darkness to light – give hope to others. Particularly when she sings Raggedy Doll, which took barely an hour to compose, she admits. “Whenever I play it, there’s a crazy reaction as its simplicity awakens something of the child within us. Once I owned a doll that lost all its hair but it was my favourite toy; the song is really a metaphor about how God loves us, warts and all.” www.philippahanna.com
When Philippa was a teenager, news of the outbreak of the fatal CJD disease hit the media and she was gripped by fear and anxiety about her health. This gradually led to depression and caused her to end her studies, but her difficulties began to change when she made a pact with God. “I needed to be found and rescued and in my heart. I asked that if God was real, for him to get through to me and give me a new life. I found I was not helpless

Reconnecting with Fundenhall’s fallen St Nicholas Church in Fundenhall has launched a research project with Sixth Form students from Norwich High School to mark the centenary of the First World War. Together they are researching the lives of the brave men from Fundenhall who lost their lives in the Great War. The 13 men fought in a number of regiments – one as far away as Cheshire – and several have been given high military honours, including the Military Cross. There are two plaques in St Nicholas Church which display the names of those from Fundenhall who fought in the war, but details of their life in the village and their war stories are unknown. The group would love to hear from you if you have any information on the following men:

Why is our water hard?
ere it comes again: rain, rain, rain! Have you ever wondered where it all comes from? Well, yes, the sky… but how does it get up there? Much of the earth is covered by oceans and lakes and as water evaporates from their surfaces, it rises in to the atmosphere forming clouds. When conditions are right, the water vapour in the clouds becomes rain or snow, falling back down for the cycle to start again.
Here in East Anglia, much of the rain falls on to the earth and seeps down into aquifers – large caverns in the underground chalk containing vast amounts of water. Water suppliers pump water from these aquifers, cleaning it and diverting it to our homes. Unfortunately, a lot of chalk dissolves in to our water, which causes the “hardness” in our water supply.
Hard water creates the scum we see in our baths, basins, and in our tea and coffee cups, and when this water is heated, it creates the scale we see around our taps and in our kettles. Scale also exists throughout our plumbing systems, where we can’t see it until it is too late and a costly failure has occurred.
The answer to our hard water Th problem is the installation of a good-quality water softener. Water softeners save a lot of expense over time by providing scale free, scum free water throughout a home. To find out more, call UK Water Services on 01603 713606 or visit www.ukwaterservices.com

lamb steaks
roasted with rosemary sweet potatoes This recipe will soon become a favourite; ridiculously easy and quick to do mid-week yet also worthy of presenting at a dinner party! It has just a handful of ingredients although you may want to add an extra lamb steak in as there’s bound to be a cry for “more”...
Ingredients (serves 4): 4 lamb steaks 3 sweet potatoes – finely sliced 1 or 2 red onions – halved and sliced 3 sprigs of rosemary (or 11/2 tsp dried) 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil 2 tablespoons of wholegrain mustard 5 or 6 cloves of garlic - peeled & left whole Alternatively: You could swap the Lamb for Pork – just remember to cook the pork through, about 10 minutes longer. And feel free to add extra vegetables (leeks, carrots, peppers – chopped into bite size chunks), making a fabulous one pot, full of flavour, delicious meal.
Method: 1. Pre-heat the oven to Gas Mark 7/220C 2. Heat half the oil in a solid roasting tray (or a suitable dinner party version!), over the hob on a medium heat, and brown the lamb steaks on both sides. Set aside. 3. Remove the tray from the heat and add the remaining oil, garlic cloves and 2 sprigs of rosemary. Toss in the potato and onion and roast in the oven for 10 minutes (5 minutes if you’ve been able to slice your potatoes super thin). 4. Next, lay the browned lamb steaks on top, brush with mustard (if using), scatter with the remaining rosemary, and roast everything for 15-20 minutes. The lamb will be cooked and the potatoes meltingly soft. 5. No more cooking steps – just serve up and enjoy!

Peugeot 308 BlueHDi car review
By tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist twitter @carwriteups www.carwriteups.co.uk
p
eugeot now has some good-looking motors in its automotive stable, including the 308. The appearance of the 308 is more akin to the latest Mercedes Benz A-Class than anything else. The front of the car is dominated by a “floating” front grille and by a dazzling lighting signature. Slim full-LED headlamps glitter like jewels and the attention-grabbing illumination continues at the rear, with the three Peugeot lion claws displayed in red LED lamps. Inside, the 308 includes a touchscreen panel on the dashboard for added extravagance. It also has a practical purpose; bringing together many of the infotainment controls in one place for ease of use and to create a current and uncluttered cabin. Everything is arranged for a drive that is instinctive and relaxing so that you can focus entirely on the road ahead. The head-up instrument layout means that data can be read easily and safely, looking over rather than through the wheel. The 308 also has a compact steering wheel and newly-developed electric power steering, resulting in a quickto-respond and controlled driving experience. My BlueHDi dieselpowered model certainly impressed me with its ability to bond to the road and embrace bends – even when pushed hard. But the biggest “wow factor” is the cars’ fuel economy – the Pug has a claimed 70.6mpg on the combined cycle!
This car is filled to the brim with safety packages and the five-door hatchback also offers plenty of room for shopping, as well as for you and your front-seat passenger. Rear-seat travellers don’t have quite so much legroom, but headroom is satisfactory and the rest of the car is cosseting enough to provide a serene ride. The latest Peugeot 308 is genuinely worth considering if you’re after a medium-sized family car. The fact that the model is manufactured and sold in China indicates just how
much global faith there is in this car’s ability. Arcade ISBN 9780956071422 Paperback £9.99 William Bennett enlisted in August 1914 and served through the Great War until demobbed in May 1919. He fought on the Somme and at Paschendaele, was wounded more than once, but came through the conflict relatively unscathed. These fascinating journals have a strong local connection: the first chapter is full of local colour and Bennett describes his various returns to the county, on leave or for medical treatment. Inevitably, though, it’s when the author describes the almost unimaginable horrors of the trenches that the book’s pages come most alive and there are many striking and poignant incidents recorded in these pages.

illiam of Norwich was an English boy whose death was, at the time, attributed to the Jewish community of Norwich and was a notorious medieval accusation against the Jews of ritual murder. Many theories have been put forward about what actually happened to the boy, but whatever the truth of the incident, it sparked an anti-Jewish backlash and helped foster a culture of intolerance that persisted through generations. Now Bill Albert, historian as well as novelist, has taken this notorious incident and woven a fascinating story around it that might just offer a plausible version of those obscure historical events.

his book does what the title suggests: well-known aerial photographer Mike Page has produced a beautiful photographic record of nearly two hundred of Norfolk’s religious buildings and there is every chance your local church will be featured. The authors make clear in the introduction that this is not a church guide – there are many of those already – but an attempt to reawaken interest in these beautiful buildings that are such an integral part of our county’s landscape. Virtually every page has a high-quality colour aerial photograph of one of Norfolk’s churches.

arks Press, so often the publishers of fine local history titles, have produced another fascinating book – this time about the East Anglian village of Elveden and the development there of the world’s first battle tanks, which had their first outings on the battlefields of World War I. Roger Pugh, the book’s author, describes the secret site on Lord Eveagh’s Elveden estate where the tanks were tested on an imitation battlefield designed to replicate the mud and craters of no-man’s land. He goes on to describe their fascinating first outings on the battlefield.

arah Perry is a Norwich resident and this, her first novel, has attracted a large amount of media attention – notably the title having been named East Anglian Book of the Year 2014. Her style has been compared with, among others, Iris Murdoch and even Viriginia Woolf. The book has a Norfolk setting, at the end of a hot, claustrophobic summer, in a fictional country house that seems to be located in an amalgam of Thetford Forest and Holkham Woods. Sarah Perry is a fine writer and we’re already waiting impatiently for her next book.
Dead Innocent Tim Laurie
Clock Hill Publishing ISBN 9781908387677 Paperback £6.99 Local author Tim Laurie has selfpublished his first novel, a riveting crime story. There’s frequently an assumption that “self-published” means second-rate, but this book gives the lie to that view. It’s a real page-turner, with the bonus that the book’s events are set firmly in and around Norwich. When a local businessman with political ambitions finds himself facing scandal and career disaster, he realises that sacrifices will have to be made – including the life of Fisher Bayley, the novel’s central character. Accused of murder, he needs to prove his innocence and find the real killer, but time and hope are running out…

Collecting antique jewellery
b
uying a piece of antique jewellery is, for most people, linked to a special event like an anniversary or birthday so emotions and sentiment will play a big part in the purchase. But choose wisely and it can also be a good investment!
There are many categories within the subject of jewellery collecting. Below is a small insight into the various periods and types available. Georgian Jewellery (1714-1837) Handmade, intricate designs with natural themes. Jewellery from this era is rare and of high-quality, so understandably it is highly sought-after and can command a high price. Early Victorian, Romanticism (1837-1860) Similar to the Georgian era, jewellery from the Romantic era was naturalistic, characterised by gold filigree and floral designs. Bracelets with jewelled buckles were very popular, along with lockets and brooches.
Edwardian Jewellery (1901-1910) Jewellery design was elaborate, lavish and ornate, with lots of attention to detail in Edwardian times. Diamonds, pearls and brilliant gemstones were all prominent. Art Deco Jewellery (1920s-1930s) Art deco jewellery is characterised by strong geometric shapes and bright colours. It was also influenced by Japanese, Egyptian and African cultures – resulting in long necklaces, ornate earrings and chokers. Retro Jewellery (1930s-1950s) This was the age of Hollywood, with jewellery reflecting its bright lights and dazzling style. Jewellery is big, bold and very sparkly from these years! Large cocktail rings, charm bracelets, glitzy watches and necklaces were popular.
Susan
Mid Victorian, Confidence & Revivalism (1860-1880) The death of Queen Victoria’s husband brought about “mourning jewellery” – sombre-designed pieces using dark stones like jet, amethyst, onyx and deep red garnets were prominent. Late Victorian, Aesthetic (1880-1901) This period saw a shift from hand-crafting to mass production, with an emphasis on diamonds and gemstones to meet the growing demand for fine jewellery. Hat pins and sentimental brooches were also popular. Art Nouveau Jewellery (1895-1915) Incredible effort was put into art nouveau pieces, with jewellery designers taking reference from the furniture and architecture of the era. Jewellery from this period often featured flowers and insects, and moonstones, opals and pearls featured heavily.

Fad calorie-restrictive diets and lots of aerobic exercise is a recipe for failure. To maximise results, embrace a lowcarb eating plan for 10 days then have a “carb feast” meal day. Then repeat the process with just four days between carb feast meal days. The purpose of this style of eating is to switch the metabolism from a sugar-burning one to fat-burning. Metabolism-boosting exercise that isn’t monotonous is also needed. A simple circuit of two upper-body, two lower-body and a core-based exercise – each for 30 seconds or so and repeated twice – will provide a cardio-vascular benefit from moving fast. When done well, these exercises will create a big elevation to your metabolic rate, which will continue for several hours while the body is repairing (known as exercise post-oxygen consumption). Three weeks later, your body will be a better fat-burning machine which will help reduce your body fat percentage over shorter time.

Helping a loved one with hearing loss
earing is an easy thing to take for granted, but if you suspect someone you care about might have hearing loss, it’s likely you are looking for ways to help.
A common signal that someone has hearing loss is when there’s repeatedly no answer when phoning or knocking at the door – only to find the loved one has been blissfully unaware when contact is finally made.
Initially, you may have a giggle at the misunderstanding of words or the bizarre interpretations your loved one comes up with, but after a while miscommunication leads to concern and frustration.
Why is there often resistance to book a hearing test?
Hearing loss makes life less easy. It is difficult to converse in a crowded room or over the phone and it is not always that things aren’t loud enough, it may be that they are not clear enough. Some people suffering with hearing loss accuse others of mumbling and may not realise they have stopped hearing sounds such as the birds chirping, because the noise has faded so gradually it’s gone unnoticed. Left untreated, hearing loss can affect relationships and erode quality of life. So it’s important to learn how to help with communication difficulties and motivate your loved one to take necessary action.
The main reason is denial. Research has shown that it takes people with hearing loss five to 10 years before having their hearing tested, and more than four million people in the UK would benefit from wearing hearing aids, but don’t.
Tips to convince a loved one to have their hearing tested:
the benefits of seeking help and what they are missing out • Discuss on, such as social occasions. them that modern devices are small, discreet and the • Reassure technology is simple and automatic.
about the dangers of undiagnosed hearing loss – not being • Talk able to hear properly while driving, for example, as well as the fact that hearing deteriorates quicker when hearing loss is left untreated.

Q&A HEALTH What’s the difference? Q:
I am seeking a professional for some advice and treatment for my foot. I wonder, is there any difference between a chiropodist and a podiatrist?
A:
Basically, no. “Podo” is Greek for foot or leg while “chiro” is Greek for “of the hands”.
In the UK, the term Chiropody was generally accepted to mean the treatment of the lower limb, especially the foot, and Chiropodist being the person who performs such treatment. In recent years the more globally accepted terms of Podiatry and Podiatrist were taken up in the UK to clarify the role as being the treatment of the foot. Anyone calling themselves a chiropodist or podiatrist must be qualified to degree level or equivalent and registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Another group involved in treating minor foot problems are foot health practitioners although they

are not necessarily qualified to degree level. The degree-level training undertaken by HCPCregistered podiatrists allows them to treat a wide range of foot problems and to use a variety of different treatments. In addition to managing common problems of the nails and skin, they can perform nail surgery with local anaesthesia and use progressive treatments, such as lasers for fungal nail infections and needling for verrucae. They may also have specialist knowledge and expertise in areas such as biomechanics and wounds. With thanks to Alistair from Footsure, Wymondham

Smart Money Secrets
is peer-to-peer a more rewarding option for your cash savings? By Andrew Hagger independent personal finance analyst from www.moneycomms.co.uk
T
ens of thousands of people will have put their savings in cash-based new Individual Savings Accounts (NISAs) this year to save paying tax on their interest, but many will be dismayed with the low-level of returns currently on offer.
It’s in a different league from the best one-year fixed-rate NISAs, such as the Post Office paying just 1.70%.
Unfortunately for savers, the NISA market mirrors the depressing outlook for the savings market as a whole.
RateSetter even offers a monthly access account paying 2.6% at time of writing, so you can dip your toe in the water with a minimum deposit of just £10.
In cold hard cash terms, 1.70% interest on the maximum cash NISA allowance of £15,000 would give you an annual interest return of £255, compared with a far healthier £420 net from the RateSetter oneyear bond.
With rates at rock-bottom and further cuts taking place every week, maybe now’s the time to consider an alternative and potentially more rewarding home for your savings – peer-to-peer lending. The returns from peer-to-peer providers look more appealing than ever, with RateSetter for example offering 3.5% for a one-year bond as I write. Even when with 20% tax deducted, the net return is 2.8% AER.
Zopa remains the biggest player in the peer-to-peer marketplace and is equally competitive with its rates. It currently boasts more than 52,000 savings customers – not surprising when you see that it currently pays a 5.10% return over five years. With a NISA people will quite rightly point out that you can ring fence your savings from the taxman, which is something not currently available
£
£ £
with a peer-to-peer provider. However, if industry mumblings are to be believed, this may well be something that changes in the nottoo-distant future. One final plus is you’re not restricted to a maximum annual allowance as with a NISA – so if you wanted to save £20,000 or even £50,000 that’s an option. One of the main concerns with peerto-peer providers has been that, although the returns far outweigh those paid by the banks, they don’t offer the cast-iron guarantee to savers that bank customers enjoy under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. However, peer-to-peer providers have their own methods in place to protect depositors. Peer-to-peer is here to stay and, as long as providers keep rates competitive and bad debt levels under control, there’s little doubt that this saving option will become an even bigger thorn in the side of the traditional banks. If you’re fed up with the miserly bank and building society tax free deals this year, maybe it’s time to look elsewhere. Always seek independent professional financial advice before making any investment decision.

ickens wrote many fine books, but he wrote one too many for my liking when it came to Our Mutual Friend. I am immune to Dickens’s charms and I object to his use of the word mutual: he should have called it “Our Friend in Common”. “Mutual” is a specific word with a precisely distinct definition. It is reciprocal between two people and it is not to be bandied about as a posh alternative to “in common with”. The word mutual can be thought of as an “I scratch your back; you scratch mine” sort of word; only two can play. Mutual respect is respect by person A for person B, at the same time as respect by person B for A. As there is no third party, it would be nonsense to say that A and B have mutual respect for person C. Likewise, you and your neighbour cannot have a mutual cleaning lady. She may clean for both of you, but she is best described as a shared cleaning lady or a cleaning lady in common. Best not to call her “a common cleaning lady” – and certainly not in her hearing! Not that it would be incorrect, just easily misunderstood. Laying, lying and telling fibs “Every time he speaks, he lies” “He lied every time he spoke” “He is in the habit of lying” “They knew that he had lied” It’s all pretty straightforward and most people can deal with the grammar of it. (If not the lies told!) But then get yourself in to a prone position, and it all goes to pot. Are you laying down, or lying down? “We lie on our beds at night” “I lie on my side; he lies on his back” “They lie in a row” These are all correct. To “lie” is what’s known as an intransitive verb; this means that you don’t do “it” to anything else – you just do “it”. Unfortunately, it gets confusing when we get into the past tense. “Lay” is the past tense of “lie”.
Granny Grammar Series
Dickens was wrong!
And then there is another totally different verb: to “lay”. Hens lay eggs; you lay your clothes out on the bed; you lay cling film over food. Note that each of the three examples contain something that is being laid – eggs, clothes and cling film. This is because it is a transitive verb, meaning you have to do “it” to something else. The past tense is: “I laid my clothes out last night” and “the hens laid six eggs last week”. Yours and theirs When my first article was published, my friend emailed me the following comment: “I bet your pleased, I would of been.” It was a joke… but this sort of sloppy English is taking hold! So, ask yourself who is pleased. You are! Now abbreviate it with an apostrophe in the place where a letter is missing, and you get “you’re pleased”. Simple. Similar Similarly: “Their going to London.” Who is going to Lo London? They are! “T “They’re going to London.” Who else is going? We are. So “we’re going” and no doubt you are going too? “Yes, I’m going too.” And as for “I would of been” – my computer automatically changes that back to “I would have been”, as if it couldn’t bear to leave it like that!
“Yesterday I lay on my other side”
76
Also correct is: “I had lain like that for three hours”
