NEWTON FLOTMAN AWARDED NATIONAL LOTTERY FUNDING

The Big Lottery Fund has awarded Newton Flotman Village Centre a grant of £4,643 to install state of the art audio visual equipment. An electric 2.4m widescreen, HD projector and hearing loop are just some of the new equipment which will help re-vitalise social activities in Newton Flotman. Newton Flotman’s village shop closed almost five years ago, and its only pub closed last year, leaving the village with no community hub. After consulting widely in the village, and after discussions with regular users of the Village Centre, such as Newton Flotman Football Club

and Newton Flotman Preschool, the management committee came up with the idea of installing a big screen, projector and speakers, so the building could be used for a wide variety of social events. The new equipment will enable the Village Centre to hold cinema evenings, set up a social club and show live sporting events. The equipment will also be available to anybody hiring the Village Centre for parties and events. Newton Flotman Village Centre hopes to launch its first cinema evening later this month, and already has plans in place to use the big screen for other social events in the near future.

NORFOLK WALKERS ONE STEP CLOSER TO ENJOYING ENGLAND COAST PATH People in Norfolk are one step closer to being able to walk around the entire English coastline as Natural England announce that work has started on every stretch of the England Coast Path. The England Coast Path is an inspirational project to create the world’s longest continuous coastal trail. In Norfolk there are four stretches included in the project including Sea Palling to Weybourne, which has been open since December 2014 for everyone to enjoy and Hopton-on-Sea to Sea Palling which has been open to the public since October 2016. Ramblers’ volunteers now are working with Natural England to discuss the best route that the England Coast Path should take from Weybourne to Hunstanton and Hunstanton to Sutton Bridge. At almost 3,000 miles long, the path will stretch around the entire English coastline. Not only will this open up new paths, it will create new areas of open access land so people can freely explore headlands, cliffs and beaches, right up to the water’s edge. WYMONDHAM CHURCH OPENS COMMUNITY CAFE Wymondham Baptist Church has opened a community cafe in Wymondham town centre. Roots Community Cafe will run on Mondays and Fridays from 10am to 1pm, offering a safe, warm and welcoming place for members of the community to find a conversation or encouragement. Church supporters have raised funds and worked hard to develop a spare room at the church into an attractive space that will be comfortable for everyone, including those with pushchairs and wheelchairs. A small children’s play area will also be available.

The cafe, which will have room to seat more than twenty visitors at a time, is being run by the church in order to tackle loneliness in the community. Project Director Emma Smith commented: “In the 2013 Who Cares survey, we found that loneliness was overwhelmingly the need most commonly shared across all age groups and circumstances. ALZHEIMER’S SOCIETY LAUNCHES NEW GR R OU P IN LONG STRATTON N

SALLY RETIRES AFTER 21 YEARS AT GLASSWELLS Sally Blake, catering assistant in the Place to Eat restaurant at Glasswells, has hung up her pinny for the last time, after 21 happy years at the family-run home furnishings store in Bury St Edmunds to spend some more quality time at home with her husband and grandchildren. Sally joined the team in 1996 as a part-time waitress and, as the restaurant has expanded, so did her role. Paul Glasswell, managing director said: “Sally is part of our ‘20 Year Club’, currently made up of around 30 members of staff totalling over 850 years’ service, plus 20 retired colleagues. 20 years is a significant milestone in employment terms and we thank Sally for her long service and loyalty to Glasswells. Although we are obviously sad to see Sally leave, we wish her a very long, happy and healthy retirement with her husband, Mick.”

The Alzheimer’s Society, which runs several dementia cafes, activity groups and carers’ groups across Norfolk, ha as recently launched a new activity group at Long Stratton Leisure Centre. The group aims to help people with dementia keep physically and mentally active and support their carers. People who attend will be able to take part in a range of activities delivered by a qualified fitness instructor. Carers will be able to meet other people in the same position as themselves in a safe, supportive place for a coff ffe ee and a chat. A ‘kinda’ APPRoACh to BUsINEss The KindaBusiness Hub, a nurturing space for social enterprises, has just been launched in Norwich by local charity, the Missing Kind. Every project the Missing Kind creates starts with the core values of kindness to people, the planet and animals and this one is no exception. People starting their own social enterprise often work from home, with limited resources and a variety of barriers, which can become a very isolating experience. The KindaBusiness Hub provides a space for both emerging and growing social businesses to flourish. Hub members will have use of our coworking space, meeting rooms, storage facilities and regular networking events. The hub also offers a free 14-week training programme, which delivers practical workshops on business processes, on how to face the fear of starting a business and managing setbacks. fter a little bit of unplanned sight-seeing we located this café down a minor road just outside Harleston. It is situated opposite Shotford Hall Farm in a new, purpose-built addition to the farm complex, and very nice it is too. Light and airy, fresh and cheery were my first impressions and as the meal progressed my instincts proved to be right. There were tables inside and out and we discovered the place to be comfortably busy. We said we were gasping for a drink and I was delighted when my black coffee came with a little jug of cold water to reduce its temperature. This is a weekend only café, open from 9 till 4 on Saturday and Sunday, and is staffed by energetic and charming individuals. Sadly it is not licenced but offering a range of hot and cold drinks. The menu offers snacks, breakfasts and sandwiches plus a range of tempting dishes, but ‘proper gravy dinners’ are not offered, nor are hot puddings with custard. It specialises in light lunches and excels at it. I chose the mackerel pâté with toast and salad which comprised a very good sized portion of pâté, wholemeal toast and mixed salad without raw onion as, for once, I remembered to ask for it to be omitted. My friend dithered between eggs benedict, eggs florentine and eggs royale, but plumped for the royale version with poached eggs, smoked salmon and the most dreamy hollandaise sauce. Both meals were excellent; not too large but satisfying and refreshing. Having being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, I have not eaten cake since the beginning of April. Now I have discovered that I am not very diabetic (if that is possible) and certainly not on the danger list, so I was determined to have some sort of sweet, gooey afters. There were several gateau type cakes to choose from and to compound my transgression I asked for a scoop of Suffolk Meadow ice cream to accompany my lemon drizzle cake.

Let me tell you, after four months without cake it was pure heaven; zingy with lemon and squishily moist. There is also a gluten free cake option and all are very reasonably priced. The bill came to £21.80 which is one of the cheapest ladies who lunches I have done. I really enjoyed being at this place and the staff were cheery and welcoming. We both found the room a bit noisy but I think curtains would address that problem. The venue can be hired out and they also offer farm visits, educational facilities and conference catering – visit the website to find out more!

CAROLINE FLACK ‘comes home’ TO STAR IN MUSICAL

popular TV personality who grew up in Norfolk is coming home this autumn to make her Norwich Theatre Royal debut in a new production of a musical favourite. Caroline Flack will star in the highly anticipated tour of Crazy For You which comes to Norwich Theatre Royal from 31 October to 4 November. She will play Irene opposite Tom Chambers who portrays Bobby. He stars as Sam Strachan in the BBC’s Casualty and is also no stranger to city audiences who enjoyed his high-energy performances in Top Hat back in 2011. Caroline grew up near Thetford and went to Great Hockham Primary School and Wayland High School. She trained in musical theatre before becoming a hugely popular TV presenter

on The X Factor and Love Island. Both she and her co-star Tom have also been crowned winners of Strictly Come Dancing. The visit to Norwich follows a hugely successful run of the show at the Watermill Theatre in Newbury which wowed audiences and critics alike. It tells the story of Bobby, a banker sent to close down a failing theatre, who falls for the daughter of the building’s proprietor despite being engaged to be married to the feisty Irene, who will be played by Caroline. Mistaken identities, plot twists, heartbreak, happiness and a wealth of memorable tunes are all featured in this all-singing, alldancing story set to a Gershwin soundtrack which includes the likes of I Got Rhythm, They Can’t Take That Away From Me, Nice Work If You Can Get It and Embraceable You.

The show also boasts a strong creative team. It is directed by The Watermill’s artistic director Paul Hart with choreography by Nathan M Wright (High Society), design by Diego Pitarch (The Addams Family) and musical arrangements by Catherine Jayes (The Color Purple on Broadway).

Pete Leavesley tells us more about a hobby which keeps all ages entertained…

expect many villagers from the Forncett and Tacolneston area have travelled along Stickfer Lane and wondered what the little mowed patch at the top of the rise is for. Some people think that the carefully manicured lawn is probably a cricket pitch, and have registered some surprise when I’ve told them what it is actually used for. For the last twenty five years or more, the field has been loaned by an exceedingly generous landowner to the South Norfolk Model Flying Club to be used as a miniature airfield. The club uses the mowed area to take off and land a wide variety of model aircraft, ranging from the simplest chuck glider – the sort of thing you often see in newsagents or sweetshops – to larger, complex models, some driven by electric motors, others by small internal combustion engines. If you pass the field and spot somebody on it, you might see any of these models in flight.

The flying club has been in existence for over forty years and currently has about seventy members. Our youngest member is a lad of only nine years (though his skills are the envy of many of his elders) whilst a few of our older members are well into their eighties, and have been engaged in the hobby for scores of years. We also use a field at Suton, just a couple of miles south of Wymondham, which at eleven acres or so is somewhat larger than the mead dow in Forncett. Club members come from all walks of life but are drawn together by their common interest – flying model aeroplanes. into the blue. The social side of the club is a much valued aspect of its activities – well, it doesn’t cost anything, does it? The activities of the club are overseen by a body called the British Model Flying Association (founded in 1922) which is directly responsible to the Civil Aviation Authority, which governs all types of flying in the United Kingdom. The models we fly are classified legally as ‘small aircraft’ and must comply when being flown with Air Navigation Orders – these are the laws by which we must abide. The club is always happy to acquire new blood and welcomes modellers of all abilities, from outright novice to complete expert. We will instruct beginners in the art of model flying and in the assembly or construction of models and the intricacies of radio control. Although skill and safety are treated seriously, the club’s main aim is to ensure that members are able to enjjoy y this immensely enjoyable hobby whilst remaining in harmony with its neighbours.

Lightening the darkness at Norwich Castle A major exhibition of prints, paintings and drawings by the world-renowned Dutch artist, Rembrandt, will be displayed at Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery from 21 October to 7 January.

embrandt: Lightening the Darkness focuses on one of the less well-known aspects of Rembrandtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s output, namely his fascination with print-making. In particular, the exhibition demonstrates his use of the medium to produce evocative images of the Dutch landscape, biblical scenes full of drama and pathos, as well as sensitive portraits, including many introspective self-portraits. Forming the core of this compelling exhibition is the nationally important but little known collection of Rembrandt etchings. This collection was

bequeathed to Norwich Castle in 1951 in the will of the London art dealer Percy Moore Turner. Turner spent part of his life in Norwich and was involved with the castle during the 1920s and 30s. He believed in the importance of museums, and that the public should have access to great art. The etchings are complemented by a selected group of paintings and drawings loaned by the National Galleries of Scotland, The National Gallery, The Royal Collection and the British Museum which show further examples of Rembrandtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s use of light and darkness. Rembrandt: Lightening the Darkness is the latest in a series of world-class exhibitions

hUMMINGBIRD CAKE Hummingbird cake, which hails from the southern USA, is like an exotic carrot cake. At The Pennoyer Centre, it’s a real signature bake that flies off the shelf, but the good news is it’ll keep for a week. Use cheap tinned pineapple in syrup – the flavour is better – and if you prefer, you can ice with your favourite cream cheese frosting. Finally, don’t panic about the long list of ingredients – the payback is the method, which is easy. Serves 14-16 INGREDIENTS

540kcal, 64g carbs per slice

300ml rapeseed oil 300g caster sugar 3 mashed bananas (about 400g when unpeeled) 3 eggs 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 300g plain flour 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda ¼ teaspoon salt 125g pineapple, drained, in bitesize pieces 100g pecan nuts, roughly chopped 450g icing sugar, sieved 160g unsalted butter, in pieces, softened 40ml milk Whole pecans and ground cinnamon, to decorate

METHOD 01. Preheat the oven to 170ºC. Base line 3 x 20cm round cake tins with baking parchment. 02. Put the oil, sugar, mashed banana, eggs, cinnamon and vanilla extract in a bowl or mixer, and whisk until all the ingredients are well combined. 03. Mix the flour, salt and bicarb together, then slowly add to the wet mix. Stir in the chopped pineapple and nuts. 04. Divide the mixture between the three round cake tins, trying to make them equal. Smooth with a palette knife and bake in the oven for about 20-25 minutes until they’re golden-brown and springy to the touch. 05. Leave the cakes to cool in their tins for five minutes, then turn out onto a rack to cool completely. 06. Now make the frosting: put the icing sugar in a large bowl, add the butter, and beat until the mix resembles crumbs. Add the milk gradually, then beat for at least five minutes until the frosting is light and pale. 07. Put one cake on a plate, then spread with ¼ of the frosting. Add the second cake, and spread another ¼ of the frosting on this. Top with the final cake then spread a very fine layer of frosting over the top and down the sides of the cake. Leave for 20 minutes to harden up – this keeps the crumbs out of your icing. Spread the rest of the frosting on the cake, and decorate with the whole pecans. Dust with cinnamon. Tip: Use the blackest bananas you can find – we pop any overripe bananas straight into the freezer (no need to wrap), then defrost in a bowl for an hour before use. They’ll be ready mashed!

rass - it’s not just for sitting on, there’s always mowing, feeding, weeding, edges to be clipped and tidied, moss to be treated, leaves to be raked up, and stripes to be added - the perfect green sward is a time-consuming labour of love, to be admired, envied and even enjoyed! Fortunately not all members of the grass family are so demanding. Most are easy to keep and when placed within a garden setting they add a certain elegance and grace, whether planted in containers (try blue Festuca or a bronze Carex in matching coloured pots), or in the borders where they make a stunning foil to other plants, such as Echinacea, Perovskia, and tall Alstroemerias. One of my favourite feature grasses is the light and airy Stipa gigantea, or ‘Golden oats’. The thin leaves form an evergreen mound, and out of this rise tall seed wands which sway in the gentlest of breezes without obscuring the view behind. This group contains several other dependable members; S. arundinacea offers a wonderful show of colour late in the season leading to its common name of ‘Pheasant grass’, while the ‘Pony tail grass’ S. tenuissima has densely packed upright hair-like blades, tufted at the tips when the seeds form,

which swish around with the wind. The Miscanthus family is one of the most adaptable groups, these herbaceous plants build up into really bold clumps over the years. The taller varieties such as M. sacchariflorus make a good screen, and if planted in a row will act as a natural windbreak leave the stems to stand through the winter, then clear to the ground as new growth emerges in spring. Other great varieties include M. ‘Morning Light’ (grows to about 4ft, 120cm) with thin arching silver-margined blades, and the horizontallybanded ‘zebra’ grasses; M. ‘Strictus’ at 2mtr plus is very striking, or for something more compact try M. ‘Gold Bar’, 45 to 60cm high and very stripy! This is just a taster of the huge range of grass varieties, colours, sizes and textures available, there’s choices suitable for all kinds of positions, from very dry to permanently wet, in full sun or dappled shade, so dig up that worn-out patch of lawn and plant some grasses instead!

Traditional Chinese Medical Acupuncture is a fundamentally dualistic system. From the basic pairing of yin and yang, we separate everything into polarities; hot or cold, full or empty, acute or chronic and the most important of all – cause and effect (the underlying imbalance and outward manifestation). If you have a leak under your sink, it’s sensible to fix the leak before mopping up the water. A small puddle will dry naturally if the leak is fixed. Addressing the symptoms of the leak without fixing the pipe will yield only shortterm results.

In Traditional Chinese Medical Acupuncture we understand symptoms as messages of distress from the body, a signpost that something is not functioning correctly. MEMORIES OF DICKLEBURGH Local historian, Dennis Cross from Diss, shares with us his fascinating collection of old postcards, focusing on a different village in every issue. This issue, we take a walk down memory lane in Dickleburgh

Norwich Rd, Dickleburgh in 1910 looking towards the village and All Saints Church from the green. These delightful thatched cottages were demolished in the mid-1960s to make way for a row of bungalows.

Steward & Patteson This 1915 postcard shows the former Kings Head Inn serving Steward & Patteson beers. George Cattermole was landlord at this time. This former public house has now been converted in houses.

This early view of Rectory Road in 1910 shows John Outlaws’ butcher shop on the left. On the right is W Smith & Sons millers’ agricultural merchants. Today the butcher’s is a post office and a recently modernised Premier Express store. On the right now is a housing estate called Smith’s Close. The Norfolk Postcard Club meets regularly in Trowse in Norwich and new members are very welcome. The next meetings are on 11 October & 8 November. Dennis is also the author of several local history books that can be purchased by contacting him direct.

Dickleburgh Rectory was built in 1839 and situated at the Rushall end of Rectory Road. At this time in 1911 the reverend was Rev. John Gregory Forbes MA. This delightful building was demolished in the 1970s and a large housing estate was built shortly afterwards.

Rural funding approaches £2m WIth MoRE oN thE WAY!

orfolk County Council has contracted 46 rural projects for grants in excess of £1.8m with a further 20 projects to be proposed later this year. The council will be working hard to ensure that the money is spent across rural Norfolk and north Suffolk and aim bring in further money to boost business and services in the region.

Local Action Groups (LAGs) deliver the funding under the ‘LEADER’ approach, which decentralises the decision and funding powers in order to support the rural economy at a local level. The LAGs are made up of representatives from businesses, community organisations and public authorities, and help small businesses and community organisations create and sustain employment. A variety of projects have been funded including animal welfare projects, brewery expansions and wine producers, forestry projects, cheese production and care farms. Flint Vineyard received a grant of £42,500 from the Waveney Valley Local Action Group to help equip a state-of-the-art winery at Camphill Farm, Earsham. The project also includes a new visitor centre and specialist equipment to enable the best handling of juice and wine.

teacher from Tacolneston & Morley Primary Schools Federation has been selected to take part in a prestigious teacher exchange with a partner school in Shanghai.

Georgia Ryan is among 70 expert mathematics teachers from schools across England taking part in an exchange as part of the Maths Hubs programme. Tacolneston and Morley Primary Schools are working with the Norfolk and Suffolk Maths Hub. The purpose of the exchange is to develop approaches to teaching maths, both in Georgia’s school and other local schools where she will be working this year. This is one part of the Teaching for Mastery Programme, run by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) in conjunction with the Maths Hubs programme, and funded by the Department for Education. Funding for the four-year programme, amounting to £41m, was announced in July 2016. The group of teachers, all of whom have completed training as Mastery Specialists in a programme

run by the NCETM and Maths Hubs, will be visiting Shanghai in September and hosting their partner teachers from Shanghai in English schools later this year. There are 35 Maths Hubs, spread across England, each led by a school with a record of high achievement in maths and of supporting improvements in maths teaching and learning in neighbouring schools. This is the fourth teacher exchange with schools in Shanghai since the Maths Hubs programme was launched in autumn 2014. LoCAL Stories By Neil Lanham

y mother said to me many times, “If you do someone a good turn, boy, you will get it back a tenfold and you will know.” I have often dwelt upon her words and the strange fortuitous things that have happened since. This is an absolutely true tale of one of them… We moved to Newmarket in 1951. I was a teenager and knew no-one but a little jockey chap who lived next door, called Doug. He took me round a few pubs and the like when I was

hardly old enough to go in. He befriended me and bought me drinks when I did not have enough pocket money to pay and we would play darts. Four or five years later, when I had got into business and had a few quid in my pocket for the first time, I casually asked my mother if she had seen Doug lately. “Oh!” she said. “He is in a terrible way.” He had got into carrying on with a man’s neglected wife and the husband had got three heavies in and they had beaten Doug to a pulp and left his body in an old burnt out car on an abandoned site.

Fortunately someone heard a groan about a day or even two days later and they had got him out and saved his life. He was now in hospital and would be there for a long time. Mother told me who had done it and that Doug had enough evidence to have a legal case against this chap who now kept going in to see him, telling him how sorry he was and offering him money to settle. “He hasn’t offered him much,” Mother said, “but Doug hasn’t got any money at all and is worried about the rent on his flat.” I told Mother that I would send a few quid over, which I did on more than

Local stories one occasion, not expecting or worrying about getting anything back. Well, Doug finally accepted this fiend’s offer and went away to recuperate in the north of England somewhere. We did not hear from him again until about 10 years later when I heard that he had returned to Newmarket and was asking for me, but we never met up. I knew the culprit who got the heavies in and swore vengeance against him which is something that one should not do. About 40 years after this deed I was doing some alterations to my garden and had a spot beneath a shaped brick wall ideal for one of those period curved stone garden seats like you see in Sotheby’s catalogues but they would be too expensive and I could not afford it. This particular hot spring day I had had my lunch and was lazing out at rest gazing at the spot where the seat would have gone when suddenly the evening newspaper arrived. Now this was usually delivered early evening, so I asked the paper man why and he said that the papers had unexpectedly arrived early so he thought that he would distribute them and be done. I lazed back in my chair now browsing the paper and when I had drifted through all else I scanned the small ads which is a thing that I never ever do. I suddenly noticed an advertisement that read: ‘Curved stone garden seat – £150’ with a telephone number. An absolute bargain, I thought, and ran to the phone only to

be answered by a pre-recorded answerphone. I left the message that if they would phone me I would come immediately and had the cash ready. Knowing that when things are offered this cheap you never hear because someone – a neighbour perhaps – usually buys it. Nevertheless about two hours later the phone went and an old squeaky voice said “Hello Mister Lanham, it’s about the seat. I’ve had phone calls from numerous people about it but you were the first so if you can come over now you can have it.” “Wait for me,” I cried, “I’ll be there in 20 minutes.” And I roared off down the road. When I got there, who should be selling the seat but the very man that I swore vengeance against for beating up my mate all those years ago. I knew him but he fortunately did not know me. My jaw dropped and my eyes were popping at the sight of the stone seat so I shelled out the £150 and shook his hand as quick as I could, telling him that I would get it picked up the next day.

I knew his history and was sure where this seat had come from but he confirmed that it was from an old mansion that he had bought to pull down in the 1960s. He then almost insisted that I bought two carvings that had come out of the ballroom at this house. I told him that I did not want them but when I saw the large caryatid of Janus with one face looking to the new year and another looking to the old I just could not resist them for about the same money as the seat. We enjoyed these things for a few years and when we moved house we put them in a local auction. The seat went for £3,000 and the carvings £2,000 which was a clear profit of even more than Mother’s tenfold. The greenhouse is a good T pla ace to start; clean the ou utside first to let in as much lig ght as possible now that days arre shortening. Then move in nside, removing any debris to o help reduce diseases and pests. You can use a a garden disinfectant like Jeyes g Fluid to clean the inside of the glass, just make sure the greenhouse is well ventilated for the next few days so it dries out.

Take the opportunity to clean tools before storing them in your shed or garage. Again, make sure that any metal tools are well-dried so they don’t rust. Sharpen shears and secateurs and consider sending your mower for a service before putting it away for the winter. Tidy your borders by digging up annuals and adding them to the compost pile. Now is a good time to use that compost – spread it generously around the garden. Your autumn tidyup will soon re-fill the compost heap for next year.

the compost heap. In well-trodden areas of the garden, compacted soil can cause drainage problems. Use a garden fork to make deep holes across the area, allowing air and water to permeate the soil and breathe life into your lawn.

Your vegetable patch doesn’t need to lay dormant just because temperatures are dropping and days are shortening. Plenty of vegetables continue to grow over the coldest months and sowing now will give you a head start in spring. You may already have some winter vegetables on your plot, such as brussels sprouts and kale, which will be well on their way by now. If not, don’t worry, there are lots of delicious vegetables which can be sown outdoors now, including spinach, broad beans, asparagus, peas, onions and garlic. Most of these vegetables are very hardy, but if you’re concerned about frost on the coldest nights, add some fleece for extra protection. Onions, shallots and garlic are particularly easy as they practically look after themselves. They have a long growing season and won’t be ready until the following summer, but it’s worth the wait. Another favourite is perpetual spinach which will produce lots of tasty leaves throughout winter. If you keep cropping regularly (and why wouldn’t you, when it’s such a perfect accompaniment to autumnal roasts?) it will keep growing back until summer.

LAUNChEs IN NoRWICh This issue, writer and artist Kristy Campbell finds out more about a new arts course at the Anteros Arts Foundation in Norwich. on the ground floor, a music room above, and artist studios in the top rooms, there is ample knowledge on offer and likeminded craftsmen to be met.

nteros Arts Foundation, based in the heart of Norwich, is a not-forprofit organisation dedicated to the rise and restoration of arts education and creativity. Homed in a handsome Tudor mansion, the charity comprises three floors brimming with talent and opportunity. With two galleries

The venue has housed auctions, concerts, and workshops, and now its latest venture: The Anteros Arts Diploma. The Anteros Arts Diploma com mmences in Sep ptember 201 17,

and has acquired a full course of students for its first year, ready to embark on an exploratory journey into new media. The diploma encourages adults of all ages and abilities to examine their relationship with familiar and contemporary techniques. With the assistance and guidance of mentors, the students aim to produce a body of work to commemorate their progress over the 28week period. The timetable is designed to work alongside prior commitments, with classes predominantly in the evenings and on Saturdays.

Arts

160 hours of contact time entitles students to a spread of distinctive workshops including drawing, painting (watercolour/ spray-paint), sculpture, printmaking and art theory, with 24-hour access to studios based on the premises. The tutors are a collection of established designers, makers and artists with backgrounds linked to the National Trust, Dulwich Picture Gallery, the Sainsbury Centre and Dove Street Studios. Although the course is not an accredited award, it will nurture a professional artist’s practice, building on confidence, strengthening styles and actively including students in seminars and dialogues to help them learn about and review their subject area. Throughout the course, students will complete various modules such as ‘Community art’ in which the students are expected to organise 12 hours of internship/ volunteering work in an arts context outside of Anteros. Marked by a tutor, this is the first milestone to present on a CV and a chance to build on business/administrative skills alongside practical ones.

Bergh Apton was once two separate villages of ‘Bergh’ and ‘Apton’. This circular walk starts at Bergh Apton village hall. Quiet lanes and footpaths lead us through two local conservation areas, before passing near the church that served ‘Bergh’. ith a last tweak of his tie Gary called out to his wife: “I’m off, love.” Off to sanitary purgatory, he mumbled to himself. Shirley ambled into the room and was rewarded by a kiss on the cheek. “New tie?” she queried. “Yes, red is too Donald Trump” Gary retorted as he shrugged into his suit jacket. “Ew yes you’re so right. Go slay ‘em tiger, show ‘em how it’s done,” was Shirley’s parting shot. The slow commute into the city centre gave Gary time to reflect. The wrong side of 50, he had been struggling for some time not only to fit into his suit but into the sales team at Better Bathrooms. The team was getting younger and younger and Gary found little common ground. The new manager, Roger – some 15 years his junior – had recently shared the branch sales figures with the aside “not looking good, Gazza,

gotta make some changes.” Perhaps redundancy might not be such a bad option, Gary mused.

Car parked, Gary took a deep breath and with a determined smile walked into the rear of the showroom. The others were already there and wearing red polo shirts emblazoned with the blue BB logo – the unlikely combination of an upright mermaid under a shower head.

With the rest of the team building a new installation, it was left to Gary to deal with the customers. First to enter the showroom was a glamorous couple. Gary left them for a while to peruse as he hated the ‘pounce on them’ mantra espoused by his boss whose eyes, he could feel, were boring into the back of his head. Better show willing, Gary thought as he caught up with the heels clattering across the laminate flooring.

“Er, have I missed something?” Gary faltered. Five blank faces swivelled in his direction. “Oh sorry, Gazza, didn’t you get the memo? Probably head office’s fault. Never mind. You can wear yours tomorrow,” Roger said smoothly. Gary knew it had been a deliberate ploy to wrong foot him. He also knew that he would look ridiculous in a polo shirt. His pecs had long since headed down south to meet his expanding paunch. If I’m going to be inched out of here,

They clip out and can go into your dishwasher,” Gary responded. The woman looked aghast, “Eew! I’m not having a nasty toilet seat with my best china in the dishwasher! Come on Tris I’ve seen enough, you can take me for coffee now to get rid of that nasty taste in my mouth.” She pulled Tris’ arm as she teetered towards the entrance. Next in was a rather scruffily dressed man who made a beeline for Gary. “I’m looking for a minimalistic suite that won’t look dated in five years’ time with one of those fancy rain showers,” he stated confidently. “Certainly sir, I believe I know exactly which suite will suit you,” Gary responded, leading the customer down towards the new installation. Once again Gary was aware of Roger who was looking the customer up and down in a rather

disparaging manner. After explaining the features and asking pertinent questions Gary was somewhat taken back when he heard “Well, Gary, that’s just the job. Now let’s see what sort of a deal we can strike.” Gary was so unused to making an easy sale and also fazed by the use of his name – despite the prominent name badges they were forced to wear. Roger was mouthing something at him too.

And I’m sure your missus, or girlfriend, wouldn’t say no to a weekend away!” Gary’s flushed face brought Roger almost running to the desk. “Er, is everything alright here? Can I help, Gazza?” The

Newton Flotman

In the latest of her new series of articles, Sarah Doig explores the history of Newton Flotman from the perspective of its village sign.

he village sign for the Norfolk community of Newton Flotman is passed by literally thousands of people of every day. But I wonder how many of us who have made the journey up the A140 to Norwich have ever given it a second glance? It stands on the recently named King’s Green alongside the main road and tells the story of the village in just a few simple images. The cast-iron sign is mounted on an oak post which is embedded in a millstone. This stone represents the village’s connection with the milling industry over the centuries.

Newton Flotman sits alongside the River Tas which forms the boundary between this parish and the parishes of Saxlingham Nethergate and Tasburgh. Whilst the first part of Newton Flotman’s name means simply “new town”, the second part is derived from its position on the banks of the river. When the Tas was a wide, navigable river, a ferry or “flote” (in Old English) man was needed to transport people and goods across the waterway, hence the name “Flotman”. The Saxon ship depicted on the village sign shows what sort of traffic this larger river might have had. The five-arched stone bridge, which was built in medieval times, has pride of place on the village sign. It is a Grade II listed building and is one of the oldest surviving structures in the parish. It was extended and widened in brick in 1838. The main road no longer passes over the bridge but in Tudor times it would have been a major route for travellers going to Norwich. So it is highly likely that the large timerframed building which stands alongside the northern tip of the bridge, which dates from around 1500, was built as a wayside inn. Until the late twentieth century it was called the Maid’s Head. It has most recently been the Relish Restaurant and Bar. Several other medieval and Tudor buildings survive in the village, including two barns.

The other building on the village sign is the parish church of St Mary’s which mostly dates from the 1400s. However, excavations in 2003 revealed some graves below the foundations, pointing to an earlier church on the same site. The existing St Mary’s Church houses several interesting monuments and memorials, the most prominent of which is one commemorating a number of generations of the Blundeville family, who were lords of the manor for over 500 years. In November 2016, the church was sadly targeted by thieves who stole valuable lead from the roof and the church is now trying to raise funds for the expensive repairs. For more stories visit www.refreshingwaters.co.uk Despite success, Hannah sees herself as “just a mum who paints” and she works on the kitchen table after clearing the breakfast dishes and doing the school run. As Hannah ended her medical career the artistic talent that had flourished as a child re-emerged and so did a new creative path to share her Christian faith. It began when she was asked to paint two pictures for a public exhibition at the city church she attended near her former home. “The event was expected to attract lunch time shoppers and business people so I painted bold colourful pictures that I hoped would draw in the onlooker to discover the words of scripture within them.”

Her inspiring designs are available as cards, pictures, calendars, journals and more recently a reflective book, telling the stories behind her artwork that includes a windmill inspired by visits to the Norfolk Broads. Her illustrations are also featured in a bible to be published by Hodder Faith on 2 October. The former GP (whose brother-in-law, David Dunnett, is the organist at Norwich Cathedral) ended her career six years ago to devote more time to her growing young family and she now follows in the footsteps of her late grandfather, a Suffolk artist. Her musician husband, Ben, gave up his teaching job three years ago to help run the company in SW England and manage the website after their third child was born. The couple fit business around their family and despite no previous commercial experience there is now a small business unit and three part-time staff to deal with growing orders and expanding stock.

With encouragement from family and friends she added more designs and now increasing numbers of Christian bookshops, cathedrals and conference centres stock her work. “My artwork is just a little vehicle to take the bible to others which is humbling and a privilege. Psalm 139 has been a favourite since childhood. To be known by God, to the core of my being, and to know I am never beyond his reach makes me feel deeply loved – makes me feel safe. “The ‘God of all Comfort’ picture has been helpful to people during times of loss and bereavement. I spent a long time on this picture thinking really hard about which verses would encourage someone in that situation; it took me three attempts to paint it.” This summer, Lion Hudson published ‘More than Words’ detailing the friends, images, experiences and loved ones that have inspired many of her pictures. “I painted a sailing boat on an ocean because my dad loves sailing which he did in Norfolk during his childhood holidays. ne of the first things all beauty therapists are taught is the importance of the patch test. This means applying a tiny bit of tint or hair dye in advance of the full treatment to check for allergies.

If you are having a treatment at a new salon, you will need a patch test 48 hours before the treatment. It is important to repeat your oa patch test regularly, as repeated exposure to product can eventually develop into an allerg gy. Besides client safety, comfort and wellbeing, patch testing is an insurance requirement. Iff you do react to a tinting treatment without a patch test having taken place, some insurancce companies will class the insurance as invalid and refuse to pay out for any claims. It is important to point out that asking a client to sign a disclaimer does not provide the salon

with any comeback as such a thing will not stand up in court. And it isn’t just lash and brow tints that require patch testing. It is also essential to patch test adhesives for eye lash extensions and false lashes. If your therapist insists that the product does not touch your skin – walk away. ortgage rates may have fallen sharply in recent years, but that doesn’t mean that the job of finding the most suitable home loan has got any easier. The number of different mortgages on offer is mind boggling and even if you’ve already worked out whether it’s a variable rate or fixed rate product that’s best, you still need to fathom out how long you want to fix for, weigh up all the fees and try to figure out the cheapest deal for you.

Unlike loans or credit cards the answer isn’t as simple as looking at a best buy table on a comparison website, although many lenders still market attention grabbing interest rates, hoping that it will be sufficient to win custom from those who don’t take the time to shop around or use the services of an independent mortgage broker. Unfortunately some lenders only sell their products directly via branch networks or increasingly online, a situation which has hit the brokers hard. Banks and building societies continue to develop products with profit margins based on a wide range of rate and fee combinations, and whilst it may work for their business, for the man on the street it can be a big headache. One of the biggest problems for consumers is working out which is the most appropriate mortgage based on the total cost, i.e. not just the interest rate but also the associated fees which can vary enormously between lenders, Loan to Value (LTV) and individual products. Choosing the right mortgage product isn’t a two minute job because it’s not a case of one mortgage fits all. The best deal will also depend on your own personal circumstances including the length of the term and the amount you’re looking to borrow. It doesn’t help matters when you see newspaper front pages proclaiming ‘lowest ever’ mortgage rates – in reality the media has fallen for the PR and marketing hype and failed to factor in the impact of four digit associated fees. When you consider that your mortgage is likely to

be the biggest financial transaction you’ll undertake in your lifetime, it makes sense to seek advice to ensure you don’t make what could be a potentially expensive mistake.
