Good News FROM OUR REGION LATITUDE LINE-UP ANNOUNCED Suffolk’s favourite festival has announced the line-up for their twelfth edition, which takes place on Thursday 13 – Sunday 16 July in the stunning grounds of Henham Park near Southwold. Fresh from their Best British Group win at the BRIT Awards and two sold-out nights at the O2 Arena, The 1975 will headline Friday night at

Latitude, bringing with them a remarkable stage set up and a fiercely dedicated fan base. Mumford & Sons will take to the Obelisk Arena as Saturday night headliners.“This collaboration with Latitude is one of the most exciting things we’re doing this year,” said the band, who will be curating the line-up for Saturday night.“It’s almost like creating a mix tape with a best friend, but instead it’s a whole day of music, across multiple stages, with 40,000

people!” Fleet Foxes make their Latitude debut this July as Sunday headliners. Returning from a hiatus and armed with a platinum debut album, their first British performance in five years will no doubt make for a memorable end to the weekend. The festival will also see performances by some of today’s most exciting and respected artists. Some acts to look out for include Goldfrapp,

The newly expanded and modernised Corn Hall will open its doors for its first performances at the beginning of May. Glynne Lloyd-Davis, chair of the Diss Corn Hall Trust, said: “It has been an extremely complex project but great credit is due to our staff and volunteers who have kept the Corn Hall running its vibrant tour while waiting for the hall to reopen. With our new, elegant extension, we will be able to arrange more activities and with a new café and bar open daily, we aim to become the maiin centtre for entertainment in the area,

a position that the hall has occupied since 1854.” The Corn Hall is the first part of the £3.2 million Heritage Triangle project to be completed. It will be followed in the spring by the creation of a new community garden behind the council offices which will join a boardwalk running across the mere to Kings Head Yard. Angela Sykes, Director of the Corn Hall said: “I love that there is so much anticipation from everyone about the reopening in May. The goodwill, support and patience we’ve received from so many quartters in the town has been wonderful.”

WALK FOR PARKINSON’S AT BLICKLING HALL

WAVENEY VALLEY SCULPTURE TRAIL The Waveney Valley Sculpture Trail is set return to south Norfolk this August. The popular event annually attracts thousands of visitors to the region to see the work of artists from around the country. Organised by Waveney & Blyth Arts, the event will take place at The Raveningham Centre, four miles south of Loddon. The trail is part of‘Celebrate the Waveney & Blyth 2017’, an annual programme of events that highlight the unique character

10

of the two valleys situated in north Suffolk and south Norfolk. The Raveningham Centre is an inspiring location for artists, with new opportunities for site specific work and sculpture in the grounds of Castell Farm, a Tudor farmhouse with an old orchard and kitchen gardens. The exhibition will be open daily from Friday 18 August until Sunday 3 September. More information can be found at www.facebook.com/ WaveneyBlythArts

Take part in the Walk for Parkinson’s at Blickling Hall this spring and help raise vital funds for people affected by Parkinson’s. The walk takes place on 13 May at the beautiful Blickling Estate with a 2.5 mile route and a 5 mile route. Walkers will enjoy views of the breathtaking red-brick mansion and its ancient yew hedges at the heart of a magnificent garden and historic park. The landscape, with its hedges and narrow tree-lined lanes, has changed little over the centuries and is quintessentially Norfolk. All walkers will receive advice about training for the walk, plus a Walk for Parkinson’s t-shirt and a medal. To enter and find out more, visit www.parkinsons.org.uk

WHAT’S ON YOUR BUCKET LIST? James from Eaton tells us about #64 on his bucket list… and it’s a big one: “My bucket list is lengthy, sporting entries from the downright fanciful (‘go to space’) to those a little more within the realms of reality (‘learn to backflip’). Every now and again I dig out the life goals and select the next targets. I’ve been eyeing up #64 for 4 years – running the London Marathon. So, on 23 April, I’ll be supporting Make-A-Wish UK for the 26.2 mile slog-athon through

the capital’s ‘frog and toads’. This is the golden opportunity to take another gander at #12: ‘make a difference’. So, utilising that pesky time slot set aside for nocturnal slumber, I created the Fund:Mustard website aiming to do just that! Dreamgirls A big day out

W

beautiful theatre and our seats were some of the best in the house. Don’t just take my word for it; a very well-known television presenter was sitting in the row behind us.

We were picked up at Ipswich (there are various local pick-up points) and were soon on our way to London in a very spacious and comfortable coach. Our driver, Jim, was clearly an experienced and steady driver as well as being passionate about his work. He transported us with great care whilst sharing many amusing and interesting facts about London landmarks. It certainly was a first-class service from Jim and all we had to do was sit back, relax and enjoy the completely stress-free journey.

Dreamgirls follows the fairy tale story of a young singing trio from Chicago who sing their way to stardom. Effie (Glee’s Amber Riley), the natural singing lead, is side-lined by the prettier, poppier Deena who fronts the group. Amber Riley is simply outstanding. She gave an incredibly sassy, emotional performance and the whole cast, choreography, costumes and staging was simply dazzling. The first half’s showstopper of ‘And I Am Telling You’ was packed with such soul, pain and passion that the whole audience were on their feet. It was a glittering, shimmering, brilliant show.

hen Cat and Kirsty from Galloway Coach Travel invited us out on one of their day trips, we were more than happy to say yes. A day out in London to see a top West End show – what a treat for us office girls! And wow, how comfortable is coach travel these days.

Galloway Travel are offering a ‘diner card’ for just £20 which can be used at a variety of restaurants in the heart of London. We used ours to enjoy a three course lunch at Chiquitos in Leicester Square. The food was great and this deal also ensures that no time is wasted looking for somewhere to have lunch. A ‘pub card’ (available for £14) can be used at a range of pubs in the area. And so – on to the main event. Dreamgirls at the Savoy Theatre in the Strand. It’s an absolutely

We made our way back to the comfort of the coach through Covent Garden and the hustle and bustle of lively London. Yes, it took a little time to get out of London, but as with the whole day, we were able to sit back and relax. How enjoyable and effortless a day out in London can be if you do it right! No delayed trains, no trouble parking, no stress and no big spend. It was great value for money and we even made some new friends.

If you would like to experience this for yourself and your loved ones the next Norfolk departure for Dreamgirls is 6th September which is in addition to the Suffolk departure leaving on 19th April.

This gluten-free cake makes a perfect pudding for Easter lunch, and keeps for about four days in the fridge. You can omit the cranberries if you prefer. Minus the topping, it is delicious with a cuppa at any time. If you want to decorate with crystallised flowers, you should allow at least eight hours’ drying time. INGREDIENTS 250g ricotta l 140g butter, softened l 140g ground almonds l 140g caster sugar l 5 eggs, separated l 1 lemon, zested and juiced l 25g polenta l 75g dried cranberries l 170g sour cream l 120g lemon curd Optional: l Fresh flowers l 1 egg white l White caster sugar

l

TOP TIP At this time of year, edible flowers include violets, pansies, primroses, primulas and freesias. You can also crystallise herbs such as rosemary or even scented geranium leaves. But if in doubt about a flower, don’t use it!

The Pennoyer Centre’s volunteer BakeForce make delicious cakes for sale in the café, which in 2014 won the EDP Norfolk Food & Drink “Best Baking” Award. The café, in Pulham St Mary, is open Mon-Sat from 9.30am to 3.30pm. www.pennoyers.org.uk – 01379 608054 The Pennoyer Centre, Station Road, Pulham St Mary, Norfolk, IP21 4QT

METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 180ºC. Grease a 23cm round cake tin and line with baking parchment – a spring-form tin, if you have one, makes life even easier. If you’d like a deeper cake, use a 20cm tin. 2. Beat together the ricotta, butter, almonds, sugar and egg yolks in a large bowl until they’re thick & creamy. Stir through the lemon zest, juice and dried cranberries. Whisk the egg whites until stiff and gently fold these, along with the polenta, into the ricotta mix. 3. Pour into the prepared tin, and bake for about

16

35 minutes (c 40 minutes for a 20cm cake) until it’s pale gold, and just firm to the touch with no wobble in the middle. Cool in the tin. 4. Mix together the sour cream and lemon curd, and spread this topping over the cake. Decorate with fresh edible flowers just before serving. 5. To crystallise flowers: beat the egg white lightly with a fork until just starting to froth. Paint a thin layer on the petals, sprinkle with castor sugar and set on baking parchment. Dry for at least eight hours, preferably overnight.

WIN TICKETS TO SEE OLLY MURS and JESS GLYNNE AT NEWMARKET NIGHTS

WIN

Newmarket Nights is back with a fantastic line-up for 2017 and we’ve teamed up with The Jockey Club to give you the chance to win tickets to two of the summer’s biggest acts: Olly Murs and Jess Glynne. Newmarket Nights has a great reputation for combining a fun-filled evening at the races with a spectacular concert in a relaxed open-air setting. Last year’s season welcomed acts including Little Mix, Tears For Fears, Mark Ronson and the Kaiser

Chiefs to the Adnams July Course, collectively playing to over 100,000 fans. With Little Mix, Olly Murs and Jess Glynne confirmed for 2017, it’s already set to be a great summer at Newmarket Racecourse.

Olly Murs Friday 18 August 2017 This year will mark Olly’s first performance at Newmarket Racecourse and he can’t wait! “I’ve never done anything like this before,” he says. “I can’t wait. I mean, what’s better? Go to a racecourse, have a little flutter on a couple of the races and then do a gig in the evening. Perfect.” Although he may not have performed at Newmarket before, he has enjoyed the races with friends in the past:

“I went last year for my mate’s birthday; it was such a good day out. Hopefully we’ll get a lovely day weather-wise so everyone has a really nice summer evening!” Olly will be embarking on a massive arena tour this year, but says that racecourse gigs are a bit special: “At a racecourse people get to see a different vibe, different set, different sound and you get to see different people.”

Jess Glynne Saturday 26 August 2017 Due to overwhelming demand for her sold out show in 2016, Newmarket Nights are looking forward to welcoming back Jess Glynne to the Adnams July Course this summer. First coming into the public consciousness as the vocalist on Clean Bandit’s Grammy Award winning and #1 hit ‘Rather Be’; pop sensation Jess Glynne has since become one of the biggest UK breakthrough acts of recent years. Her number-one charting debut album,

To win a pair of tickets to see either Olly Murs (18 August) or Jess Glynne (26 August), visit www.village-people.info

‘I Cry When I Laugh‘, has turned double platinum in the UK, making it the highest selling debut album of the past year. Jess is also one of only two British female solo artists to have five consecutive UK number one singles. “It’s going to be great fun playing Newmarket Racecourse on 26th August after the races,” she says. “My show there in the summer was one of my highlights as the fans were so amazing; I can’t wait to come back!”

Alexandra Burke to star in

Sistter Actt

From Saturday night TV superstar to stage sensation, Alexandra Burke is fast becoming a big star in theatres across the country. Fresh from wowing the nation in The Bodyguard, she now takes on another iconic stage role in Sister Act, which is heading to Norwich Theatre Royal on May 1-6. She will play Deloris Van Cartier, the sassy singer who witnesses a gangland murder and is placed out of harm’s way in a convent. She admits she took a little bit of persuasion to bring Deloris to life. She recalled: “The producer Jamie Wilson offered me the role and I actually wasn’t too sure about saying yes, although I knew it was a fantastic opportunity. I didn’t know if I was made for the role. I think it is a confidence thing. “I was the same when I was offered The Bodyguard. Again, it was an issue about me not having enough self-confidence.” But Jamie gave her the soundtrack, script and the film to watch while she mulled over his offer. “I watched half of the movie and I listened to the soundtrack and it was actually the soundtrack that made me say yes. The songs are just so beautiful and I thought it would be a privilege to sing them,” she said. Alexandra also believes this stimulates her in lots of new ways. The mix of comedy and drama in the musical, as well as the challenges her character faces, made it a role she felt she had to take. “Deloris is a very interesting character and very different to Rachel Marron in The Bodyguard but I am looking forward to taking on this new adventure,” she said. After winning The X Factor back in 2008, her debut single Hallelujah became a European record holder for single sales shifting a massive 105,000 copies in 24 hours. Concert tours, hit albums and West End success followed, but with it came a hugely strong work ethic to ensure every aspect of her performance is spot on. Alexandra is also keen to create a new characterisation of Deloris and not just copy the iconic performance of Whoopi Goldberg in the global movie hit version of Sister Act. She said: “I always want to put my own spin and my own interpretation on anything that I do.”

BUYING A PROPERTY

A buyer y ’s checklist: Topp 10 qquestions to ask House hunting can be an exciting experience but you often forget the most vital questions. It is important to take your time and make sure the property suits your requirements – local estate agents Fine & Country have written this checklist which might help!

26

Is the property leasehold or freehold? This is always a vital question to ask. Is the property leasehold or freehold? Talk to your estate agents and your solicitor about the intricacies of leasehold vs. freehold. It is a complicated area and it is best to seek expert advice. How long is the lease? If you are buying a leasehold property, you should always check the length of the lease. If is only has a few years left, ask about the possibility of a lease extension and how much it will cost. How long has the property been on the market? This is an obvious question but it is always worth asking. This gives you an indication as to how keen the owner is to sell. You should also ask if there are others interested in the property. What is the area like? Don’t just view a property once, but several times. Canny buyers will look at their potential new home during the week, weekends and in the evenings. You are not only viewing the interior – check the surrounding neighbourhood, too. Is there damp? When walking into a property, look out for tell-tale signs of damp, including flaky plaster work and possible stains on the walls or ceilings.

6 7 8

How much is the service charge? It is always worth asking the annual service charge rate if you are buying an apartment so you can factor this into your budget. Are there any major works planned? Areas are constantly evolving, with improved infrastructure or transportation. It is worth asking whether there are any works planned for the area or nearby in case they could add to the value of the property. How old is the plumbing and wiring? Expert advice is highly-recommended as it is a technical area. However, simple things to check on a viewing could include: running the tap/ shower for water pressure, asking the age of the boiler and looking whether the pipes are insulated.

9

How old is the roof? If the roof has been recently repaired, then it is a reassuring sign that the property is cared for by its current owners. Enquire when the roof was last repaired as this an important factor to consider.

10

Is the property sound proof? Many properties have measures in place to reduce interior and exterior noise. Does the property havve double glazing or secondary glazing? Assk your estate agent ab bout the insulation off the walls for peace of mind.

Garden Jottings from Keen

pring is here, you can see its magic exploding all around you, lush green leaves unfurling, herbaceous perennials erupting from the soil, beautiful blossom bursting into clouds of colour on ornamental cherry and crab apple trees… go outside and take a deep breath, the new gardening season has truly arrived, you can smell it in the air! Fragrance adds another dimension to the garden, but individual likes and dislikes vary, personally there’s nothing quite like freshly-cut grass in spring, or the aroma of a good bonfire in autumn, but for most it’s undoubtedly flowers that top the wish list of garden smells. Your garden should be able to provide you with a combination of scents all year round. Spring and summer months have the widest selection to choose from, starting with spring bulbs such as bold hyacinths and many daffodils. Early-performing shrubs can include Witch hazels with their spidery crumpled petals which appear on bare stems, as do the incredibly fragrant flowers of Viburnum ‘Dawn’, while the blooms of evergreen choices such as mahonia and sarcococca are deliciously sweet-scented. The summer flower borders can feature bearded iris, lilies, dianthus (pinks and carnations), roses, and Crambe cordifolia with its haze of tiny white star flowers. If your garden is sunny and free-draining, try growing Melianthus major, the flowers are honey-scented but the leaves have a strong aroma of peanuts (an interesting combination), or

the shrub Calycanthus occidentalis which has deep velvetred flowers smelling of mulled wine! Walls, fences and obelisks can all be clothed with fragrant climbers such as jasmine, a few choices from the clematis family, roses again, or a well-trained wisteria (always buy a grafted plant, preferably in bloom, to avoid a long wait for it to reach flowering maturity). It’s not just flowers that produce scent, the foliage of hundreds of plant species release fragrant oils when brushed or crushed, ranging from ground-cover thymes, lavenders and other shrubs, right up to mighty trees such as eucalyptus, or Cercidiphyllum japonicum which smells of rich burnt sugar when the leaves drop in autumn. Colourful bedding and basket plants can also add to the perfume concoction, try upright and cascading petunias, or musky verbenas and nicotianas for the summer, then in Autumn plant wallflowers, Sweet Williams, violas and primroses to provide interest through to late spring. When selecting plants for a fragrant garden think about flowering time, size, colour and a suitable position where you can get close enough to enjoy them at their best, and I know it sounds obvious but do check that the choices you make really are fragrant - honeysuckle, roses and sweet peas are all known for their perfume, but varieties vary from those that fill the air with gorgeous aroma to many which have no scent at all!

Cheers, Ken

PLOT

READY, STEADY, GROW!

ON THE VEGETABLE PATCH There’s a lot of growing to be done in April and May, both indoors and outside. Indoors, it’s time to sow seed of courgettes, squash and pumpkins. In April you can also sow cucumbers, tomatoes, celery, aubergines and artichokes. Sow seed outdoors for beetroot, carrots, Swiss chard, summer cauliflower, lettuce, leeks, radish, turnip, spring and pickling onions, peas and perpetual spinach in well-prepared soil. Plant your asparagus crowns, shallots, onions and garlic. If the weather is mild,

sow sweet corn outside in blocks, at least 45cm apart with two seeds per hole. It’s also time to sow your French beans but be sure to protect them from late frosts with fleece or cloches. Keep a look out for pests on your seedlings, particularly flea beetles on brassicas, asparagus beetles and slugs. Netting can be used to protect your peas and brassicas from pigeons. Keep watering well to encourage growth despite any pest damage and most of all, keep weeding!

Home & Garden BEE-FRIENDLY GARDENING

LAWNS Now that spring is in full swing, remember to mow regularly – once a week should keep the garden looking neat and tidy. Keep the lawn edges trimmed and use an edging iron to create a 7cm gutter around the lawn edge to prevent grass from spreading into the border. From mid-April to early May you can sow new lawns or repair dead patches in an existing lawn. To prepare the ground, level it out and lightly firm the soil. After sowing grass seed, avoid walking over it and do not mow the grass until it has reached at least 5cm in height. Even then, start off with a light trim at the highest setting on your mower. Make sure that new lawns are well-watered, especially during a dry spell. Think about more environmentally-friendly options than using the hosepipe – using grey water from the kitchen or perhaps a rain water butt. Don’t worry if a few weed ds appear in your new lawn; these will go when regular mowing begins.

If you want your garden to be buzzing with life this spring, then provide lots of nectar rich flowers to encourage bees to nest. Some of the most attractive plants for bees include foxgloves, honeysuckle, marjoram, sweet William and lavender. The beautiful scent from these plants will be attractive to human visitors, as well as the bees! Flying insects such as bees perform an important pollination service in our gardens. Without them, many plants cannot be fertilised which means they will not produce a seed, or in some cases, fruit. With many reports saying that bees are in decline, planting nectar rich plants is a great way to ensure pollination can continue, allowing fruit and vegetable crops like apples, strawberries and tomatoes to thrive. It is unlikely that you will be stung in your garden if you treat bees with respect. All female bees have stings but they aare e not agg aggressive and will only use the sting for sself-defence. To avoid id nd too close to a nest this happening, don’t stan usiness of collecting and leave bees to their bu m buzzing around d your nectar when you see them flowerbeds.

How it had survived the war years when Lightning Lock the local scrapman would call every week, I do not know, but when Uncle Tickles Alleston died my Auntie Mary made sure that it came to me. I got it going and took it to Wantisden Rally. The first morning that I rode it out there were about four hundred people watching a demonstration by a gyro tiller, but when my velocipede appeared round the corner, the four hundred people turned to watch me. It was photographed for Old Glory Magazine and the following week came a phone call from Derek Raynor, the road roller archivist, who said that it was unique and could he come and see it.

Robinson, riding a wooden prototype in his garden at The White House in Barsham near Beccles. He explained the dog clutch mechanism that gave it two speeds and how the differential threw one wheel side out of gear for easy turning. It really was before it’s time. I later sent a photo to the Antiques Roadshow who were keen to feature it on Fiona Bruce the show at Layer Marney Towers near Colchester. At the show I met the charming Fiona Bruce who was determined reenact my mother’s pose on the machine. To close the show as she rode off into the sunset on my wonder garden roller!

PART 7

The Stowaway cat My father had two rules about holiday driving. One was that the minute he shut the car door he was on holiday; the journey was part of the fun and not just something that needed to be endured at both ends of the time away. The other rule was that we designated a point on the map, not too far from home, which was to be the “point of no return”. Regardless of whatever we had forgotten to pack, after that point, we never turned back. I was telling Jess about this as we drove through the village. She began making suggestions. “Lindrick golf course?” “Not far enough,” I said. “The big roundabout on the A1, with that weird café thing and the steep turn off to Lincoln.” “That’s too far.” “That lay-by near Worksop, where you can buy bacon and five cigarette lighters for a pound, from that hut thing?” “Subsumed by Wilkinson’s transport depot.” “I give up,” she said finally, reaching for the last of the travel sweets. “I know!” I said. “The entrance to Clumber Park – we can do a U-turn there if we need to.” Silence (barring the odd slurp from my left) enveloped us both. Neither of us had remembered any forgotten item by the “point of no return” so I drove on and muscled my way into the

traffic on the A1, going south. “That’s it then, definitely no going back,” I declared, as I took a deep breath and settled back in my seat for a 30 mile blast down the tarmac. Once I was in top gear and wanting to pass everything that got in my way, I looked into the rear-view mirror to make sure that Eddie Stobart and Norbert Dentresangle, behind us, had sorted out their differences and had settled for first and second place in the slow lane, when I realised that all I could actually see in the mirror was a face. A black face. A round, black, furry (back-to-front) face, looking rather crumpled. As if it had been buried underneath something – hiding. “No going back?” the black face whispered. “Not at all? Never-ever-ever?” I sighed, closed my eyes (momentarily) in despair and shook my head slowly. “Only I was in danger of Suffolk-ating under all that lot. It’s very dangerous piling things up like that, a cat could get hurt.” I said nothing, hoping it was just a mirage. I decided to overtake a long procession of army vehicles, out on manoeuvres, to take my mind off the problem. Jess dutifully waved to all the drivers, but received scant acknowledgement. Once in front of them, I cut back in rather suddenly and Milly was thrown against Jess’s head. “Whatheheck…?” Jess begged to know. “Stowaway.” “What? Who?” She turned in her seat scattering sweet papers everywhere. “NO! How did she…” Milly spoke again: “You were sneaking off again, weren’t you? Going on holiday and leaving me on half rations.” There was nothing for it but to embrace the situation and make the most of it. “Welcome aboard Milly, I think you might find this interesting.” Part 8 continues in the next issue. Remembering your loved ones in the digital age

F

or many people, the world-wide web is much more than a means of staying connected to people, news and information. It is a way of documenting their lives via websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, LinkedIn, Tumblr and Google. As a consequence, the digital record of these individuals is the most substantial collection of information on them after they die. Popular social media platform Facebook has over 1.8 billion users, of which it is estimated that more than 312,500 of them die every month. By 2012, 30 million people who had created Facebook accounts had died, leaving their accounts and all the collected information and memories on them, inaccessible to their loved ones.

an account and all information associated with it, including profiles with subsidiary companies of Google such as Blogger, YouTube and Picasa. Many of these procedures depend on an individual having planned for their digital afterlife prior to their death. Due to current privacy laws, families may be required to seek court orders to have their deceased relatives’ accounts removed. The digital age is one more reason that families should have open discussions about death and the legacy they would like to leave behind. With thanks to Anne Beckett-Allen from Rosedale Funeral Home

As a result, lawyers are urging people to bear their digital lives in mind and leave passw words to their various accounts in their will. Additionally, tech giants Google and Facebook have established step-by-step procedures which allow an individual to manage their online legacy. When Facebook is made aware of someone’s passing, their profile becomes a Memorialised Account. Google launched the ‘Inactive Account Manager’ in 2013, which allows for the nomination of a ‘Trusted Contact’ with whom your data will be shared after a predetermined period of inactivvity of either three, six, nine or twelve months. Alternative ely, the manager can be set up to delete

Local craftsman keeps tradition alive Trevor Clarke has worked as a traditional plasterer and pargetter for the past 34 years and as time passes he still gets as much satisfaction from his work as ever. Trevor’s work has been featured in various books and over the years he has acquired excellent references and a qualification in heritage plastering. He has created a wide

range of pargetting work including plants, birds, animals and friezes such as wild rose, oak leaves, acorns, hares and owls. No job is the same so Trevor will always spend time speaking to the customer and discussing the unique needs of each building, whether it’s a listed building or a modern home.

Make a difference with

homeopathy

When homeopathy is chosen by top sports professionals like David Beckham, Martina Navratilova and Boris Becker, it makes sense for everyone to use it – young and old alike! Homeopathy is so popular in Europe that it forms an integral part of everyday healthcare. In France, 67% of medical practitioners consider homeopathy to offer effective and cost efficient treatment. In England, 42% of physicians refer their patients for homeopathic treatment. Britain’s royal family has sought homeopathic care from the 1830s to the present day. George VI was so impressed with the positive effects of homeopathic remedies that he named his prize racehorse Hypericum after a homeopathic remedy for nerve injury. The Queen, who rarely takes time off due to illness, is a strong believer in homeopathy, as was her mother before her. Prince Charles is an outspoken supporter of homeopathy and natural medicine and our former Prime Minister, Tony Blair, has gone on record to say that he uses homeopathic remedies for his children.

Many Hollywood stars use homeopathy to speed recovery and maintain their vitality. Catherine ZetaJones, Pamela Anderson, Tina Turner, Jane Fonda and Sir Paul McCartney to name just a few. With homeopathic hospitals in London, across the UK and worldwide, is it time for you to discover these amazing remedies by training for a new career as a professional homeopath? With weekend training at the Homeopathic College of East Anglia you can make a difference and build a new future for yourself. Find out more at www.homeopathic-college.com or call 01603 665173

Early Bridges of Suffolk

Carol Twinch ISBN 9781911311157 £10 Suffolk’s prosperity has always depended on good transport links, from the days of the Anglo-Saxon kings to the medieval bridge hermits who collected tolls from pilgrims on their way to East Anglian shrines. The construction and upkeep of bridges was essential but it raised a fundamental question: who would pay?

76

V historian Janina Ramirez introduces a Norfolk woman who lived over six hundred years ago: Julian of Norwich. Based on a series of mystical visions she received in the 1300s Julian’s book Revelations of Divine Love is regarded as one of the greatest works of literature in English, engaging with questions about life, love and the meaning of suffering; although Julian’s famous line “all shall be well, all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well” offers timeless reassurance.

olkham Hall’s archivist Christine Hiskey shares 400 years of Holkham’s history. From the Coke family’s creation of Holkham Hall, the development and use of the park as well as the changing fortunes of the two villages of the ‘town’ and the staithe to how 350 years of intervention by the Coke family has transformed the coastal landscape of marshes, dunes and creeks. A thorough study of Norfolk’s great estate.

umorous blunder and a twist of fate unshackles Norfolk from the United Kingdom to become an independent country. All seems to be going swimmingly until West Norfolk develops a taste for self-government. A satirical timely tale.

Foster caring – have you got what it takes?

If you’ve got what it takes, we’d love to hear from you. To find out more visit www.norfolk.gov.uk/fostering or call 0344 800 8020. Diane* looked after two sisters who had witnessed domestic abuse. “The children were scared and angry and simple routines like meal times were a constant battle, with tantrums and screaming.” The girls were used to violence at home and expected Diane to

he allways shout or hit them but sh remained calm and reassuring. Diane stuck to the regular routines and very slowly the girls began to enjoy family life. “They liked being clean and well fed and listening to a bedtime story. They became calmer and showed more kindness.” For Diane, one of the rewards of fostering is helping to bring the best out of the children she cares for. “To see them happier, healthier and more confident is fantastic. They’re not perfect – none of us are – but they’re able to make friends and take part in activities in school and outside.”

* Diane’s name has been changed to protect confidentiality. Picture posed by models.

But if you’re robust and enjoy a challenge, if you’re patient, calm and encouraging and want to make a big difference to a child’s life, becoming a foster carer could be right for you.

Being a foster carer is hard work – there’s no point pretending otherwise. It requires tons of commitment and a huge investment of time.

Smart Money Secrets

If you’re looking for a personal loan give the high street banks a wide berth B By A Andrew d H Hagger iindependent d d t personall fifinance analyst l t ffrom www.moneycomms.co.ukk

E

ven though bank base rate sits at a lowly 0.25% some banks are still charging interest at a staggering 20% plus when it comes to personal loans of less than £5,000. The battle for our personal loan custom is as fierce as it’s ever been, but the problem is that many lenders are cherry picking and focusing on the higher value end of the market.

Another option to consider is the Low Rate credit card from MBNA, although this isn’t strictly a personal loan, there’s nothing to stop you using this card in the same way you would as a loan as it allows you to transfer money from the card into your bank account with no fee.

Five lenders currently fighting to be top dog and advertising record low interest rates of between 2.9% APR and 3.1% APR, but only for larger amounts, i.e. £7,500 and above.

If you transfer your balance to the card and set up a monthly standing order from your current account, it works exactly the same as a personal loan. The interest rate is 4.9% APR for any transactions made in the first 60 days and remains one of the cheapest and most flexible ways to borrow.

For lower value loans it’s a very different picture, with the majority of lenders charging double digit rates on a £4,000 advance and Barclays and Lloyds Bank amongst the most expensive at 22.9% APR and 26.3% APR respectively.

The potential cost savings on a loan of £3,000 with the low rate options mentioned here could save you up more than £20 per month so don’t automatically assume your existing bank will offer the best option as that’s rarely the case.

There are cheaper options available, but my research shows you’ll do well to give the big banks the elbow if you want get the best deals.

It’s definitely worth spending 10 or 15 minutes to shop around for the lowest rate.

There are three borrowing options that stand out, if you want to borrow £5,000 or less. Zopa, the first peer to peer lender in the UK is now in its eleventh year and RateSetter one of the more recent but fastest growing lenders in the peer to peer market both offer some of the best value deals at 5.3% APR and 5.2% APR respectively for a £3,000 loan over 3 years. Just because you’re not familiar with the name, it doesn’t mean you should discount them – the peer to peer market has quickly established itself as a credible alternative to the big banks – and the low interest rates are much better than you’ll find on the high street.

There are some much cheaper options out there and by taking advantage of dealss fro om le esser known lenders you could literally be quids in when it comes to the amount of interest you’ll save.

Equity release schemes allow you to release tax-free cash from your home to boost your finances in later life • Many clients use this money to repay an existing mortgage, make home improvements, buy a new car and even go on a holiday of a life time, while others may wish to offer financial assistance to their children or to improve their own quality of life in retirement. • Business Matters is qualified and registered through the Financial Conduct Authority to offer a valuable equity release service for homeowners aged 55 or over. • B u s i n e s s M a t t e r s o n l y r e c o m m e n d a p p r o ve d schemes from The Equity Release Council.

Make the most of your retirement

W

e are all living longer and planning to do more with our free time, but a changing economic climate and pension provisions mean many people don’t often have the money to realise their retirement dreams. Equity release allows you to release tax-free cash from your home to boost your finances in later life and it is beginning to play an important role for home owners aged over 55. In my experience the most important factors for people seeking advice are as follows: • There must be a ‘no negative equity guarantee’ to safeguard your beneficiaries • You are able to remain in your own home for as long as you wish • You have the right to sell your home at any tim me to down-size or move into other accommodattio on, the amount owed is then repaid with any balaance transferred to your bank account

purchase or to enhance their own lifestyle. Before deciding whether equity release is suitable for you, your questions should be answered to your total satisfaction. Be prepared to take time over this, never be rushed into something if you are in any doubt. If you are single or living on your own, consider inviting a friend or a family member to be with you. This will enable you to discuss and reflect on the advice given. Before making any decisions you are advised to seek independent professional advice from a person qualified and approved by the FCA. There are many options available to you hence the reason why it is necessary to be fully informed. With thanks to Michael Boon, member of the Equity Release Council. For more information visit www.businessmattersifa.co.uk

• Money borrowed will be at a fixed rate of inte ere est for life, is tax-free, and can be used for any purpose • No monthly payments are made, as interest is rolled up on a lifetime mortgage. If a Home Reversion plan is more suitable, you would se ell a proportion of your property and remain in yourr home for life with no roll up of interest on the e percentage of the value retained. There are many reasons why people raise money using equity release: to repay an existing mortgage, home improvements, buy a motor home, travel abroad, help their children with ho ouse

Support for Norfolk carers

E

ach year, hundreds of people in Norfolk become ‘unpaid carers’ for a family member or friend who, due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction, cannot cope without their support. People often don’t realise they are ‘carers’, they’re a husband or wife, son, daughter, relation or friend. As a result, they often don’t take up any of the support which is on offer locally for carers. This month, Norfolk Carers is reaching out to people in Norfolk to urge them to get in touch if they’re caring for someone and think they might benefit from some extra help. Kevin Vaughan from Norfolk Carers says: “We have support workers in your area who can provide individual support, meeting at your home or at a community venue of your choice.”

met a Norfolk Carers support worker: “It was the best thing that I could have done, finally I felt supported.” Norfolk Carers is a one-stop service for carers in the county providing a range of services including practical and emotional support through a free Advice Line, Norfolk Carers Handbook, Time for You (breaks), Grants and Funding and Individual Support. Christine, 66, from South Norfolk cares for her husband who has Parkinson’s, and a number of other health problems. “The stress creeps up on you,” she says. “You don’t realise you’re taking on more and more until you’re forced to take stock.” The crunch came for Christine when she had a panic attack caused by the strain of trying to support her husband’s emotional health. Eventually, she found a lifeline during an open day in her local library where she

2 Accessible from the north of the river, the Abbey of St Benet (top) is the only Norfolk monastery founded in the Anglo-Saxon period that continued in use until the Middle Ages. It was largely abandoned in 1530s. All that is left standing is the gatehouse and the 18th-century mill within. This atmospheric site is owned by the Norfolk Archaeological Trust. Drainiing mills are scattered through the landscape (above).

We walked on a sunny but chilly Valentine’s Day. St Benet’s gatehouse and undulations across the river hinted at the amazing spectacle of a huge abbey rising above wild marshland in the distant past. Some of that wildness has returned: we were rewarded with the sight of two Marsh Harriers, hundreds of Pink-footed Geese and our first ever emotional sight of Common Cranes in ‘Broadland’.

Common Cranes (above), once common in Norfolk, have established a small breeding colony in The Broads. They have a loud trumpeting call and are one of Europe’s largest birds. 3 Upton Broad and Marshes Nature Reserve is home to some of Norfolk’s rarest wildlife including ten nationally scarce or rare plant species. Recent land acquisitions have increased the area around the reserve and surrounding farmland has been restored to marshland.
