Welcome

Time certainly does fly when you’re having fun! This Late Summer issue celebrates Village People Magazines’ seventh birthday!

I can’t believe it’s been seven years since I launched the first issue – from the end of my dining room table in Talcolneston. My, how we’ve grown! Never would I have believed Happy 7t h B irt hday to us! that our huge popularity meant that very quickly we would be publishing three separate editions with 50,000 magazines delivered every issue by Royal Mail. And to celebrate our birthday, we’d like to treat one lucky reader and a friend to a meal out. Next time you go out for food in the local area, take a photo on your phone and post on Instagram tagging @vpmagazine. Tell us where you are and you might be returning for a meal for two on us! Find out more by reading our competition page inside. We love it when you connect with us on Instagram – and we’re forever sharing sneak-peaks of our retro office and the VP girls hard at work! Make sure you find us @vpmagazine and say hello with a picture! Our fabulous local community is buzzing with events, places to go and things to see as well as money off vouchers just for you, so set aside some time for a good read and enjoy our birthday issue. At first, we thought ““I should be so lucky” lucky to see Kylie Minogue at Newmarket Races this summer. And rightly so – tickets to the international superstar’s one-off concert sold out in minutes. But it certainly was good news for us! The VP girls were given press passes to join one of the biggest crowds ever at the worldrenowned Nemarket Racecourse.

And the Spinning Around star didn’t disappoint. Kylie looked better than ever as she danced about and donned three costume changes. Singing along to her string of hits – including On A Night Like This, Can’t Get You Out Of My Head and Locomotion – the VP Girls were certainly “Wow”ed! Don’t miss Sir Tom Jones and Spandau Ballet also at the races this August.

lOcal aMatEUR RIdER qUalIFIEs FOR hORsE OF thE yEaR Jenny Welham, from Stoke Ash, has earned herself a place at the Search for a Star 2015 Championship Finals after coming second in the qualifying round.

Riding her own horse, Jays Remembrance – known as Remi – Jenny will now go on to compete at the Horse of the Year Show 2015 at Birmingham NEC this October. She said: “For the first year I owned Remi I was convinced that buying him had been a huge mistake. I rode him and he absolutely terrified me so I put him in the field and didn’t ride him. We then started doing some in-hand showing and took it fr from there.” For more information, visit search4astar.org.uk Ph Photo: SMR Photos

EvERyONE INvItEd FOR walk OF REMEMbRaNcE

Anyone that has lost a loved one is invited to join a Walk of Remembrance in Diss on Sunday 2 August.

There are two routes: a threeand-a-half-mile walk or a one-mile walk, both starting at 11.30am from St Marys Church following a one-minute silence and a dove release. The walks are being organised by Rosedale Funeral Home and will raise valuable funds for The Salvation Army. Derrick Leeder, a funeral director at Rosedale, said: “Last year’s walk was the first of its kind in Diss and we received such positive feedback from those who joined us that we have decided to make it an annual event.” Registration costs £10. norMandy Veterans return Ted Bootle, president of the Stradbroke & District Branch of the Royal British Legion, and member Alan King have both returned from a five-day trip to Normandy. The two men landed on Sword Beach early on the morning of 6 June with their families. Ted travelled

with his son and daughter in law, Alan and Molly, and Alan travelled with son-in-law, Brian, grandson Oliver, and grandson-in-law, Ben. The trip was courtesy of the Libor Fines, who sponsored the return of the D Day veterans to Normandy who originally landed on the beach on 6 June 1944.

22-yEaR-Old tURNs hObby INtO bUsINEss Saffy has opened her own shop in Harleston at the tender age of 22. Selling a wide selection of items she personally loves, the shop is aptly-named Spit Spot Loves. The shop reflects Saffy’s individual, bubbly personality –“The quirkier the better!”she says. And the young entrepreneur hasn’t stopped there. She’s also launched daily craft classes, as well as a local group where ladies of all ages come along on a Tuesday evening without commitment or cost to craft, gossip, enjoy a cuppa and a sweet treat.

I’m not “fussy”,

I have a food intolerance By nadia render, food writer Twitter @NadsNorfolk Facebook NadsNorfolk

I

n December 2014 new legislation was passed which requires food businesses to provide allergy information on food sold unpackaged at catering outlets and restaurants, etc. The rules also changed with regards to allergen labelling on packaged products. I have a life-threatening fish and shellfish allergy. And I am a vegetarian by choice. My sister is a type 1 diabetic. The table in the restaurant with the women dissecting the menu is us and, sadly, people tend to have an intolerance to our intolerances. Short of pulling out my epi-pen and my sister pulling out her insulin and waving them in the air, we just have to put up with the disapproving glances and comments. My vegetarianism works in my favour. Anything that carries the Vegetarian Society Approved “V” mark in the UK is free from meat

AND fish – with no cross contamination with nonvegetarian products during the production process. I scrutinise every label, but there are times when even I have been caught out. My partner once brought home a carton of tropical fruit juice. I poured myself a glass happily one morning and was reading the carton to see exactly which fruits were in it as I took my first sip. That’s when I saw it: “With added omega 3 fish oils”! Thankfully I hadn’t yet swallowed, so I spat it out. I called my doctor and took a double-dose of antihistamine but, even with such a low level of contact, my hands swelled and I felt really rather awful for a couple of days. My partner felt worse… But this is not the kind of place you would expect to find fish, is it? Another “hiding” factor is when production lines are on shared

premises, posing a crosscontamination issue. This is a particular problem for people who are allergic to foods and there are certain brands of olives and jarred peppers that I can’t touch as the label states that they are packaged in the same premises as fish products. This is also a huge problem for nut allergy sufferers. Allergens are hidden everywhere in everything we eat and drink, and even in the beauty products we use every day. A new openness from producers and sellers about what’s in their products is brilliant. It has also given us a whole new world of choice in terms of products, for example, the new “Free From” ranges are starting to appear all over. For further food intolerance information and advice:

Beware of the risk: Seasonal Canine Illness S

easonal Canine Illness (SCI) is a mystery illness affecting dogs and is generally seen between August and November. Here in Norfolk and Suffolk we are in an area which is known for the illness and it is therefore useful for all dog owners to be aware of it. The most common clinical signs of SCI are sickness, diarrhoea and lethargy, usually within 72 hours of walking in woodland. It can affect any breed, shape, size or sex of dog. If you suspect that your dog is suffering from SCI please contact your vet as soon as

possible. Information provided by the Animal Health Trust (AHT) states that dogs who have received veterinary treatment quickly for SCI usually recover with seven to 10 days.

At this time the cause of SCI is still not known and therefore there are no preventative measures, but most vets advise keeping up to date with Ectoparasite treatment (for fleas, ticks and mites) which may help to decrease the risks. There have been cases of SCI reported in Thetford Forest and on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, Rendlesham Forest in Suffolk, and also two other Re sights sigh in Nottinghamshire. Research by the AHT has ruled out man-made Re poisons, poisons water quality, fungi and flora but unfortunately they are looking for a needle in a unf very ve large hay stack! Information gathered in 2011 has helped to narrow the search area but the public are ar being urged to help with any information they may ma have. Research still continues at the five study sites where Re cases have been listed but SCI could happen in any woodland so vigilance is key. In order to continue wo helping with research, the AHT asks that if you have walked your dog in these areas please visit their wa website to fill in an online questionnaire. we The Th questionnaire and more information on SCI can be found at www.aht.org.uk With thanks to Nicole from Uplands Way Vets

Watch the Tour of Britain in Old Buckenham

T

he Tour of Britain is British cycling’s premier road cycling event and the country’s largest annual free-to-spectate sporting event. Once again, the race is expected to attract some of the world’s top teams. Previously, Sir Bradley Wiggins’ has won the Tour of

Britain and last year’s UCI World Tour teams included Team Sky, Etixx-Quick Step and Cannondale. On Saturday 12 September, stage seven of the tour comes to our region, starting in Fakenham and finishing in Ipswich. The 225km route will come right through the south Norfolk village of Old Buckenham – giving cycling fans the chance to see the world’s best riders racing on our doorstep! Old Buckenham will be the best place to watch the tour as it races along the straight road that cuts through the famous village green. To support this major event, residents of Old Buckenham are organising a fun-filled day of entertainment for cyclists and families alike – including amateur cycling races, a funfair, beer festival, and food and craft stalls. There will also be ample parking for cars, and also a secure bike park. To find out more, visit facebook.com/oldbuckenham.tour

Rebecca

A best-loved book is brought to the stage this September

D

aphne du Maurier’s timeless Rebecca is a book loved by generations of readers, as well as an iconic Alfred Hitchcock movie, and now it is brought to Norwich by the internationally-acclaimed Kneehigh Theatre.

The show runs at Norwich Theatre Royal from September 21 to 26 and Kneehigh’s multi-award-winning creative team has combined Cornish romance and theatrical magic in the new production. Following the mysterious death of his first wife, Maxim de Winter returns to Manderley with his new, young bride. Surrounded by memories of the glamorous Rebecca, the new Mrs De Winter is consumed by jealousy. She sets out to uncover the secrets of the house and a past fiercely guarded by the sinister housekeeper Mrs Danvers, and discovers that all is not what it seems in Manderley.

The cast is led by Tristan Sturrock as Maxim de Winter, Emily Raymond as Mrs Danvers, and Imogen Sage as Mrs de Winter. Tristan Sturrock graced television screens earlier this year as miner Zacky Martin in another Cornish classic – the hugely-successful Poldark. He has enjoyed a 28-year association with Kneehigh Theatre, in particular, starring in the theatre’s international productions of Brief Encounter. Kneehigh Theatre is based in Cornwall, just a stone-throw from Daphne du Maurier’s home. The company has grown from humble beginnings and carved a global beg re reputation, creating productions with the National Theatre and the Royal Ro Shakespeare Company as well we as its own international hits. The Th production’s joint-artistic director, Emma Rice, described dir Rebecca Rebec as a “gripping whodunit” and a “social satire”, and revealed that Daphne du Maurier’s son said it used to drive his mother mad when she heard Rebecca described as a romance.

“She insisted – and this is a direct quote – that it was ‘a study in jealousy’,” explained Emma. The production team had wanted to bring a du Maurier tale to the stage for a while. “Daphne and Kneehigh share a Cornish connection and it felt that a piece based on one of her writings was long overdue. “We use a number of different elements; acting, music, film, design to tell the story and we stitch together a great big tapestry of ideas. Audiences coming to Rebecca will see a recognisable 1938 world but with something of a twist. Those [who are familiar with] Rebecca via Hitchcock’s 1939 film version may be surprised.” The production’s design is by Leslie Travers whose credits include Peter Grimes on Aldeburgh Beach, with lighting design by Tim Lutkin, winner of the 2014 Olivier Award for Chimercia. Sound design and original music is by Olivier Award-winner Simon Baker.

Rebecca comes to Norwich Theatre Royal from Monday 21 to Saturday 26 September. Tickets are available from the box office on 01603 630000 or book online at theatreroyalnorwich.co.uk

Village People works together with Waitrose and Wymondham High Academy

T

he local community really does matter to us here at Village People and our regular readers will know we like to support local good causes wherever possible.

Our latest project links us with Waitrose in Wymondham and Wymondham High Academy. Working in partnership, Village People has funded the most fantastic display cabinet for Wymondham High Academy’s artwork, which is proudly on show in the café at our local Waitrose store.

L-R: Fran Fr Young from Waitr itrose, itrose ose, Editor Lily Goulder and Neil Moulton, Head of Art Ar at Wymondham High Academy, with the proud students

The display cabinets currently feature work from Year 10, entitled The Environment and Natural Form; showing a selection of paintings, photography and textiles by the talented youngsters. The artwork will be changed every month so locals can really get a feel for the wonderful work being produced by the students at Wymondham High Academy of all ages, right up to A Level stage. As its school holiday time, during the month of August the displays will engage with even more of the local community by going “on loan” to feature work from the Wymondham Photographic Society. The local society was formed back in 1969 by Doug Fulcher and the club’s current president, Mike Cooper. The group welcomes anyone from

beginners to experienced photographers, ienced phot phers using a wide range of cameras, and hold weekly meetings during term-time at Wymondham Dell Bowls Club. “We’re very grateful to Wymondham High and Waitrose for offering us the opportunity to display some of our work through the summer break,” said Mike Cooper, president of Wymondham Photographic Society. “We hope you enjoy looking at it!” September brings with it the new school year, so we will return to focusing on the students, with the displays featuring A-level Art Multimedia during the beginning of term. So plan a trip to Waitrose, do your shopping and enjoy a coffee whilst browsing some amazing original art – and know that, by reading Village People Magazine, you are supporting the wider local causes that we love to be involved in.

Garden Jottings from Ken F

or a bit of gardening inspiration there’s nothing better than taking a look at a display of show gardens, such as those at the Chelsea Flower Show, Britain’s pinnacle of horticultural excellence, Hampton Court, Tatton Park or at some of the fantastic county events such as Sandringham or an agricultural show. Whether you attend and experience the atmosphere for yourself or just watch on TV (where I’m sure you see more of the show gardens) you can’t help but wish that your garden looked that good all year round - so why doesn’t it?

Firstly, most display gardens are a bit of an illusion, a snapshot of one moment in time when everything is brought together at its peak (that’s not to say they are impractical or unreal). Secondly, budgets need to be generous as instant is expensive, and thirdly, the attention to detail is very time consuming, requiring a skilled team to install and maintain the design. However, putting aside these minor details, there’s no reason why much of what you see cannot be created in some way in your own garden. Show gardens express the importance of structure, the balance between hard surfaces (patios, pathways, steps, features etc.) and the softer elements of the plants, creating an inviting and harmonious space.

including Cirsium “Atropurpureum” (a ruby-red thistle), Crambe cordifolia (a sweetly-scented member of the cabbage family) and Polygonatum “Striatum” (a shadeloving variegated Solomon’s seal). Green in all textures, shades and forms naturally creates the backdrop for these blooms - lush hostas, soft conifers, bold fatsias, neat hornbeam hedges and sharply clipped box balls, interspersed with drifts of blousy lavenders or light and airy grasses moving gently in the slightest breeze. These borders look fantastic now, but for your own plot try to extend the season with planting that will reward you with successional interest throughout the year. At The Garden Enclosure we stock all kinds of plants and have access to thousands more from our dedicated local nurserymen, so call in and turn your wish into reality, create a space that’s special, you don’t have to do it all at once, take one step at a time and your dream garden will no longer be an illusion!

Cheers, Ken

Th Garden Enclosure at Banham The

ful of show-stopping full st stopping plants!

The majority of flower colour is produced by herbaceous plants, such as the beautiful sunloving bearded iris, wonderful large-flowered oriental poppies, fragrant dianthus and carnations, centaurea (Knapweed), foxgloves and many other “cottage garden” favourites. A few more interesting choices to catch the eye regularly feature, If the opportunity arises go and have a look at some local open garden events, where residents bravely open their side gates for a good cause, and allow the public a sneaky peek into their private space. These are genuine gardens maintained on an average budget in the owners’ spare time, giving you a realistic snapshot of what you can achieve in yours.

Collectingg militaria

nlike some of the other fields of collecting, militaria has never been out of favour and its value has always steadily increased. Collecting militaria continues to be a very popular hobby.

There are so many militaria sub-categories which one could specialise in collecting: ting: medals, helmets, uniform, bayonets, badges, cloth insignia, field equipment, antique and deactivated weapons and much more. There are also areas within each category, such as specific periods, conflicts and items from certain countries. But be careful. For as long as there has been a demand for such items, items there has been unscrupulous people manufacturing reproductions which have become more and more accurate and harder to detect. It’s amazing how many genuine souvenirs are still tucked away in people’s lofts or at the back of our cupboards. If you have an interest in militaria, ask family members if there are any such items stored away – you may be surprised at what is uncovered. Many families will have medals which have been kept through generations and some are named. First

World Wa Wo War medals, medals for fo example, ample have ha the recipient’s details stamped on the rim. It will have the service number, rank, name and Corp or Regiment, and information can be Regi found from these details using the Internet. There are many ways in which to source militaria, including auctions, private websites and specialist shops. I believe that actually seeing something and handling it before you commit to buying it is always the best option. Militaria fairs are held regularly across the UK with specialist dealers always in attendance, and these are great places to learn more as you admire the items and talk with the sellers. The Thetford Militaria Fair is held at Breckland Leisure Centre four times a year and has around 40 specialist dealers. There is always a varied selection of items available from some of the country’s leading dealers including D&B Militaria (de-acts), NB Antiques (RFC/RAF) and Grendon Militaria who specialise in bayonets. In addition, there are dealers in medals, war documents, surplus, uniforms, postcards, helmets, books, badges and general military collectables. If you have something you want to sell or wish to have valued, bring it along to the next fair and ask for me, I`ll be happy to point you in the direction of the most suitable dealer.

Thanks, Susan

Next militaria fair is Sunday 27 September at Breckland Leisure Centre, Croxton Road, Thetford, Norfolk, IP24 1JD

reaP the rewardS! It’s the season you’ve been waiting for, harvest is coming so be on the lookout to catch your fruit and veg at its peak.

Pick and eat early varieties of apples as soon as they’re ripe. Cup the fruit and gently twist – if they come away easy they’re ready.

Onions are ready when the leaves begin to flop over, and squash should be raised off the ground to ripen in the sun before harvesting.

Cut back strawberry plants with secateurs after they’ve finished fruiting otherwise they’ll spread very easily – don’t worry if they look bare, new strawberry leaves will appear soon.

relax & enjoy But not for long – there’s maintenance to do! Pruning, dead-heading and watering are key jobs when the garden is in full blossom to help keep your plants healthy. Now’s also a good time to divide perennials (plants that live for two years or more) to create extras. Do this by lifting the plants and splitting them either with your

hands or two forks, but ensure each division has some leaves and roots before replanting – this will ensure the new sections continue to grow vigorously. The older centre of the plant should be removed altogether. As ever, it’s also time to be thinking ahead to springtime. There’s seeds to be sown and bulbs to be planted for next year so get planning!

A lot of damage can be done to lawns and plants if they’re not regularly watered during dry, hot weather. Make sure you have someone reliable who can help out and, of course, return the favour when it’ time for their holidays!

The new BMW 1 Series CAR REVIEW

By tim Barnes-clay, Motoring Journalist Twitter @carwriteups www.carwriteups.co.uk .carwriteups.co.uk

N

early two million 1 Series models have been sold since the introduction of the first generation a decade ago – and now the latest incarnation is here. The M135i, in three or five-door formats, feels like the heady motor that it is. Its testosteronefuelled 322bhp petrol lump with well-weighted, razor-sharp, steering enables you to slice through corners with style. The 120d, in contrast, feels domesticated. Its steering is light and, with diesel power,

46

there isn’t the same level of zest. In many ways the oil-burner drives like any number of premium quality hatchbacks; cars like the VW Golf and Audi A3 spring to mind. Whichever model you drive, the 1 Series hasn’t undergone a radical change. Its looks have altered a bit with a nose and tail nip and tuck, and the interior kit has been bulked up. But it is the new power-plants that make the biggest difference, and particularly the ushering in of the 1.5 litre three-cylinder diesel that features in the latest MINI, which has been fitted to the BMW 1 Series 116d. Fresh four-pot petrol-turbos appear in most of the other motors. When it comes to the diesels, the threecylinder 116d sets free 114 horses in both normal and Efficient Dynamics guises, while the 118d, 120d and 125d models all use varieties of the same 2.0 litre four-cylinder unit, putting out 148bhp,187bhp and 221bhp. It is the three-cylinder that produces the major savings at the pumps, but all these engines are more cost-effective than their predecessors. Step inside any of the latest 1 Series cars and you’ll find well-manufactured cabins, with dashboards that look rational, yet classy. The seats are comfy too, but the most awe-inspiring and stirring model is the M135i. Its chunky steering wheel, bucket seats and guttural exhaust all point in the direction of real athleticism. The M135i is a hardcore hot-hatch. Six cylinders give it an instant lead, while the silkiness of the 322bhp engine, harmonising with the tuneful

tailpipes, combines to make this Bimmer one heady concoction of bliss. It will do the 0-62mph dash in just 5.1secs and will race all the way up to 155mph. The M135i’s adroitness and adhesive-like road-holding make it such a great motor to drive, especially on our winding British rural routes. 100th anniversary of courageous Nurse Cavell

Norfolk journalist, Sandie Shirley, spotlights the inspiring stories of men and women from the region and beyond that have seen them reach for victory. For more stories visit: www.refreshingwaters.co.uk

T

he 100th anniversary of Nurse Edith Cavell’s death this year is being marked with events in Norfolk, London and Brussels, BBC TV coverage and a British £5 coin.

The sacrifice of this extraordinary nurse from Swardeston helped over 200 Allied soldiers escape from behind enemy lines during World War I resulting in her execution. Within days Edith – who assisted soldiers on both sides of the war – was hailed a heroine and martyr across the globe. The daughter of the vicar of Swardeston, she was taught to run mercy errands to support poor villagers. From an early age she pledged: “Someday I am going to do something useful. It must be something for people. They are, most of them, so helpless, so hurt and so unhappy.” That statement set the seal on Edith’s life which ended before a firing squad on 12 October 1915 after she was arrested by the German secret police, questioned and held in solitary confinement for over two months. Accused of “assisting men to the enemy” and tried by a military court, the only incriminating document was a thank you postcard from an English soldier after he reached home.

The cell where Edith spent her final days in St Gilles Prison, Belgium

The night before her death she told a visiting church minister: “I am glad to give my life, rather than any of my soldiers should have fallen into the hands of the Germans. I know patriotism is not enough. It is not enough to love one’s own people. One must love all men and hate none.” From governess to nurse, her career included working at two Poor Law Institutions as she became a matron. She prayed for the seriously ill at their bedside and pressurised suitable convalescent homes to provide care and rest for needy patients, often making personal donations towards their upkeep. After praying for future guidance she began professional nurse training in Brussels in 1907 then continued to excel in leadership. When Brussels fell, German nurses replaced their English counterparts who were

despatched home, home but Edith and her chief assistant stayed behind. Colonel Dudley Boger and Sergeant Frank Meachin were the first of 200 fugitive soldiers to be sheltered and cared for by Cavell during the next nine months. Without safe shelter, Edith was asked to help, providing them with medical treatment and a hiding place for two weeks. It began a long and dangerous crusade as soldiers were harboured in homes and hospitals despite growing random checks by the Germans who warned that anyone found sheltering Allied troops would be shot. Edith knew the dangers but refused to cease her activities. Facing death on that October dawn she said: “Think of me only as a nurse who tried to do her duty.” www.edithcavell.org.uk www.cavellnursestrust.org

Ladies Who Lunch fredricks fine foods

Norfolk House Courtyard, Diss IP22 4LB • 01379 652594 • www.fredricksfinefoods.co.uk

Snug, warm, cheery pubs can wait ‘til autumn – today we’re having a picnic. You will find Fredricks Fine Foods in an extraordinary courtyard off St Nicolas Street at the top of Diss, together with other interesting artisan shops of all kinds. Fredricks had some deliciously-tempting flat, stuffed mushrooms on offer and there were at least five different pâtés: smoked salmon, duck, pork, chicken and mushroom. There was also a range of bread loaves and a wide selection of cheeses, but we turned our attention to the large individual quiches. We selected one mushroom, one ham, cheese, and tomato. Then, dithering between the humongous sausage roll and dinky little pork pies, we decided to go for one of each to swap and share. Also vying for attention was a spinach and salmon “slice”.

If you’re taking the food away, like us, bring a cool box with you so you can buy the food early in the day and take a slow meander down pedestrianised Mere Street. Fredricks will supply you with plastic cutlery if needed. If the sun shines on a Friday, go then: it’s market day; and down at the bottom of the street, there’s a book shop, an ice-cream vendor and toilets. Here also is the entrance to Mere Park – the Mere being the large lake in the heart of the town with plenty of ducks to feed and a beautiful fountain. There is a buggy-friendly path right through the park, and here you will find a safe children’s play area, a “roof-onlegs” shelter and a small café for hot drinks. We had bought the food after much discussion about what to have; for £3.20 we could fill a container with our own choice

taken from nine different salads. We focussed mainly on the ones we wouldn’t make at home: tomato, olive and garlic salad; and beetroot dusted with chopped mint that gave it a sweet, almost floral, taste. There was also egg mayonnaise, pasta and feta cheese, asparagus and noodles. The aforementioned pork pie had a pleasant peppery flavour which didn’t kick in until you had said, “No, I didn’t notice that”, and the spinach and salmon slice was very filling too. For desert, I chose a delicious Portuguese custard tart and

my friend went for the lemon meringue tart. I personally think it would have benefitted from less meringue and more lemon, but she actually prefers it the other way around so was very happy with her choice. The shop sells wine, but being unsure about drinking alcohol in a public space, we chose apple and elderberry cordial which was so fragrant and uplifting in the sunshine. All in all, our luxury picnic cost £22.19 and there was more than enough for two.

The way we were:

Transport

In the first of a new series, Sarah looks at different aspects of life in East Anglia 150 years ago, 100 years ago and 50 years ago. In this issue she takes a closer look at modes of transport.

T

he year was 1865, 150 years ago, and the railway network in East Anglia was expanding rapidly. Rail travel had first reached Norfolk in 1845 with an extension of the line to Norwich from London which had previously stopped in Essex. A number of small train companies ran various different branch lines until the Great Eastern Railway was formed in 1862, amalgamating many of these. Among the other towns served were Great Yarmouth, Ipswich, King’s Lynn, Lowestoft, Norwich, Hunstanton and Cromer. Indeed some seaside resorts owed their success to the coming of the railways and the rail network transformed the wider rural landscape by changing agricultural practices. Farming intensified as expanding railway links ensured that farmers could provide freshly-picked fruit and vegetables to London, rather than just local markets. Meanwhile on a sad note, local newspapers for 1865 reveal that there were many fatal railway accidents. These were mostly due to people not realising how dangerous and fast the new mode of transport was. By 1915, motor cars had become commonplace in East Anglia, although they were still luxury items with leather seats and polished metalwork. Those who could afford a car were often rich enough to employ a chauffeur and the speed limit was just 20 miles an hour. However, for the ordinary East Anglian, horse-drawn carts were still used to transport goods and people

alike. Milk was delivered on horse-drawn carts with a big milk churn on the back from which householders’ individual jugs were filled. A popular form of mass transport at this time was the charabanc. These were open-topped with a large canvas folding hood and rows of bench seats for the passengers. By the early twentieth century, the horsedrawn charabancs had been replaced by models sporting a motor engine. These vehicles were popular for organised day-trips to Norfolk and Suffolk seaside resorts. Fast-forward 50 years to the 1960s, an era many East Anglians will probably agree was the heyday of bus transport. The Eastern Counties Omnibus Company dominated bus services in East Anglia and, because in the late 1950s a large swathe of the rural rail network was closed, buses were poised to take over public transport routes. They also ran special summer routes to seaside destinations, including to the popular local holiday camps. New buses were introduced in the 1960s to allow for one-person operated vehicles. They were starting to lose money due to mass car ownership, a trend which has continued to this day. If you would like to discover more about the history of your family or house then Sarah can help. Give her a call on 01379 890215 or visit www.ancestral-heritage.co.uk to find out more. Battle of the Bangers

Meet Norfolk’s number one sausage expert

A

fter discussions in the pub about who makes the best sausages, Stephen Plume set up sausagefans.co.uk. It’s about sharing recommended, quality British sausages, recipes and cooking tips and it’s visited by thousands of people each week. He’s even been touring the UK in search of the finest sausage makers. Sausages help regions celebrate their identity. We all know the Lincolnshire sausage and the Cumberland ring, but did you know about the Norfolk sausage? The recipe was dreamt-up by Rob of Scott’s Field Pork, with their amazing rare-breed Norfolk pork, and Icarus Hines, an awardwinning butcher with shops in Sheringham and Cromer. You can get in on the sausage action closer to home too! A key date for any food lover’s diary has to be The Battle of the Bangers, which takes place just up the road at the Norfolk Food and Drink Festival in Norwich. This year’s event is on September 13 and takes place in Chapelfield Gardens. It will see 10 of Norfolk’s finest sausage makers fight it out for The Battle of the Bangers topspot. Visitors will sample all 10 sausages and vote for the most delicious, crowning one sausage maker “The People’s Choice”. A panel of hand-picked experts will then meet to savour the flavours and discuss the merits of each sausage before deciding “The Experts’ Choice”.

It’s a hotly-fought contest with the pride of the county at stake. For those who are slightly less die-hard sausage fans, Norfolk Food and Drink Festival as a whole is a great, free event for the whole family with delicious tastings and various stalls and entertainment on offer.

Stephen would love to meet Village People readers at the event and wants to hear your recommendations for seasonal sausages from all over the country, especially Norfolk. Tweet him @sausagekinguk or get in touch via www.sausagefans.co.uk

Eye Church Art Show

E

Friday 28 to Monday 31 August

ast Anglia is full of artists, creating all sorts of pictures of all sorts of subjects. For over 25 years, St Peter and St Paul’s Church in Eye has been running an annual art show as a “shop window” for these artists and as a way of raising much-needed funds for the church. At a conservative estimate, the church has displayed 14,000 paintings and sold over 2,000 during this time. Not bad for a small-town church in the middle of East Anglia. This year, the show starts with a preview evening on Thursday 27 August and runs through to Monday 31 August, but the preparation work began back in June when invitations were circulated to over 200 artists.

The church opens with wine and nibbles on the first night, and is attended by established buyers, artists and friends. (Invitations for the preview evening are freely available ailable to those who want to be sure of getting a very special picture before anyone else can buy it – just use the email address below). belo Thereafter the show is open through to Th the end of the bank holiday, excluding Sunday morning, and there will be tea, Sunda

The artists range from beginners to highly-experienced professionals, all with their own unique viewpoint to express. Prices vary accordingly from less than £30 to over £500, but average prices are generally less than £100. Many artists also submit a range of unframed pictures and cards at lower prices. Once the responses come in, the flavour of the new show will be seen. Many artists return retur year after year, year but there is usually a turn-over of about 25 per cent, where wher last year’s artists are replaced ar by newcomers bringing new br variations in style and subject.

coffee, Pictures ffe cake and a raffle ffle available ailable to visitors. visit Pi are normally left on the walls throughout the show, but exceptions can be made for those who purchase an item that have travelled from afar. Please note: cash and cheques only. At the end of the week, buyers return to the church to collect their purchases whilst the artists pack away for another year. This is a story of church community effort which brings together lots of volunteers and lots of artists to generate funds for the church. But it can only be done with the support of the general public... So see you in Eye this summer! For more information contact Anne Willoughby on awillobee@btinternet.com

Homecare or care home?

s we grow old, many of us will need help and support with daily living tasks. When this happens, moving into a care home may seem the only option, but doing this is a major commitment for your future.

There are pros and cons for moving to a care home, and it is a great option for many elderly people and their families as they grow older and need more care. Many people like the routine, the company and the 24/7 assistance. But it’s not an ideal choice for everyone. Fortunately, there are alternative options available as we get older too.

care home, yet it enables the individual to maintain independence, dignity, wellbeing, peace of mind and happiness. More importantly, it allows the individual to remain safe, whilst living in the familiar surroundings of their own home. With thanks to Jonathan from Empathy Care.

It is almost inevitable as we reach later life that we will require more everyday assistance and it’s often a gradual process. With the support of dedicated, highly trained and courteous carers, you can remain living independently, in your home. The option is out there to choose a person centred support package that will assist you with such things as personal care, medication management, food preparation, shopping and household duties. Often, home care is less than half the cost of living in a

What can I expect at a hearing test?

O

ne in six people in the UK experience some form of hearing loss, but a large percentage of people have never had a hearing test nor sought professional advice. One of the main factors that stop people is fear of the unknown. But having a hearing test is simple. It doesn’t hurt and won’t take much time. A full hearing assessment is carried out by a hearing aid audiologist – a healthcare professional who is highly-trained in the prevention, identification and non-medical treatment of hearing disorders.

The first part of a hearing test is called the case history. You’ll be asked about your medical history, hearing loss symptoms, family history of hearing loss, history of noise exposure, and any concerns you may have. This will provide the hearing aid audiologist with an overview of your medical situation and will help them better assess your results. Next the hearing professional will examine your ear canals and eardrum with a specialised light called an otoscope. This allows them to check for issues such as wax in your ear canal or infection of the outer ear bef before starting the hearing test itself itself. At this point you will be placed in a sound-treated te booth or test a quiet room. Du During the hear hearing test, a ser of tones series

of different frequencies (also known as pitches) as well as speech signals will be presented to each ear separately through earphones. You will respond to test signals either by pushing a button, or in the case of speech signals, repeating what was heard. Your hearing thresholds are the lowest levels of the test signals that you can hear at least half of the time. Thresholds are recorded for each frequency and each ear on a chart called an audiogram. Once your type and degree of hearing loss has been determined, your hearing care professional will be able to decide what is the most appropriate next step for your individual case. With thanks to Karen Finch from The Hearing Care Centre

Set a goal with a deadline: Without a clear goal in mind it will be impossible to achieve what you want – write it down and be realistic.

2

Use a plan: It will be much easier to achieve your goal if you have a plan to follow.

6

3

Get started: The sooner you start the better. many people procrastinate when it comes to exercise.

4

Use weights: lifting weights three times a week is one of the best types of exercise for changing your body shape quickly. It will also speed up your metabolism to burn more body fat whilst you are not exercising.

5

three times a week will perfectly compliment weight-training. A simple interval workout that anybody could start with is a one-minute walk followed by a one-minute run for 20 minutes. The run needs to be maximum effort as intensity is key when it comes to intervals.

Interval training: Performing interval training

Increase your water intake: When working out regularly you will need more water than usual. Two to three litres a day is a rough guide for most people.

7

Increase protein intake: A higher amount of protein is needed for those who exercise often to assist with speeding up recovery and repair of your muscles which get broken down during exercise. If protein intake is not increased you could feel worn out and run down.

Whole foods: This is one of the keys to good health, building lean muscle and reducing body fat. Eating more foods that come from nature and only contain one ingredient, and avoiding most man-made foods.

Sleep: A good night’s sleep should be high on your priorities if you want to lose body fat and gain lean muscle as this is essential to reducing stress. You will have a hard time trying to burn fat if your stress levels are high.

hen it’s time to consider your options. You no longer need to be a celebrity to access cosmetic treatments – they are on your doorstep right in the heart of Norfolk. Whether you require a quick, lunchtime procedure or are considering cosmetic surgery, the option is available to you. Does your skin pigmentation, birthmarks, scarring or age spots get you down? Then consider

photorejuvenation treatments. Perhaps you are tired of seeing your leg-veins, varicose veins or unwanted hair… then it’s time for you to look at laser therapy – there’s no needles! Do you long to see an improvement to your fine-lines and wrinkles? Who doesn’t! These can be treated too, with a combination of injections and lasers, which also have a preventative value.

It’s time to invest in your confidence!

what is esoteric healing therapy?

H

ow we live on a daily basis is somewhat different to 30 years ago. Everything is faster now: cars, food, the Internet... As a result, we too have become more “racy”. This raciness has a direct affect on the physical body and as a result we can often feel un-easy. This presents as stress, exhaustion, frequent colds and headaches, and sometimes more severe

conditions can develop. Esoteric (innermost) healing therapies offer the body an opportunity to remember its own natural rhythm. Esoteric massage is a gentle form of massage that reminds the body how to move in a supportive way as opposed to causing harm. It is deeply healing. Esoteric chakrapuncture (a needling technique using very fine, tube delivered,

Elderly centre celebrates being 30 years young

I

t’s Edith Cavell Day Centre’s birthday soon, so the Swardeston-based charity is celebrating 30 years of fulfilling the lives of older people.

The day centre, which runs at the Lakenham-Hewett Rugby Football Club, first opened its doors in 1986. It now welcomes visitors – mostly in their 90s but some younger, some older – three times a week for food, activities, day trips, health checks and, of course, lots of friendly chatter. Providing support and respite for families and carers, the day centre offers a safe, sociable environment as well as providing eye tests, chiropody, hand care, reflexology and a hearing aid repair service at the venue. Visitors can be collected from their home if required and dropped back again by one of the centre’s drivers and will enjoy a delicious home-cooked meal during the day. The elderly also benefit from the many activities run throughout the day, including quizzes, crafts, exercise and informal services led by local clergy.

flexibility security ..an opportunity you’ll love..

There are also regular day trips organised by the centre, which have most recently taken visitors to Pensthorpe Nature Reserve, a boat trip on the Broads and a seaside visit to Gorleston. The day centre welcomes up to 24 visitors every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday between 10am and 3pm and is run by two qualified managers, kitchen staff and several volunteers. It costs from just £20 a day. For more information, visit www.ecav.co.uk or call 01508 578826

Q&A HEALTH Preventing indigestion Q:

Why do I suffer with indigestion? It’s miserable and I often wonder why I suffer but those around me don’t. Why me, and what can I do to prevent it?

A:

Acid reflux, or reflux, is when the acidic contents of the stomach leaks backwards and upwards into the oesophagus (gullet) or mouth.

In normal circumstances, a muscular valve lying between the gullet and the stomach prevents reflux occurring. It is designed to allow food to pass only in one direction – from the mouth into the stomach – however, this mechanism can sometimes fail.

76

Taking regular anti-acid products generally creates a cycle of the acid being forced artificially lower, only for the body to over-produce acidity in order to compensate! Unlike other herbal indigestion remedies, A.Vogel’s Digestisan comes in the form of a herbal liquid. Digestisan contains four herbal extracts obtained from herbs organically cultivated ed in Switz Switzerland. land

There are several health conditions which may cause or be associated with acid reflux, including hiatus hernia, indigestion, pregnancy and being overweight or obese.

This is a traditional herbal medicinal product used to relieve indigestion, feelings of fullness and flatulence, exclusively based upon long-standing use as a traditional remedy.

Indigestion is a common problem experienced by many people. Eating more than you need is a common factor, but others include a diet rich in fats and alcohol, rushing meals, stress and not chewing food properly.

Smart Money Secrets

An independent mortgage broker is a sensible move By Andrew Hagger independent personal finance analyst from www.moneycomms.co.uk

M

ortgage rates may have fallen sharply in the last few years, but that doesn’t mean the most suitable home loan has become any easier to find.

Unfortunately, some lenders continue to bypass the broker community and sell their products directly via branch networks or, increasingly, online. This has hit brokers hard.

based on the total cost – not just the interest rate, but also the individual products and the associated fees, which can vary enormously between lenders, as well as the Loan to Value (LTV).

The number of mortgages on offer is mind-boggling and even if you’ve already worked out whether it’s a variable or fixed-rate product that you’re after, you still need to fathom how long you want to fix for and which is the cheapest option available to you.

Banks and building societies continue to develop products with profit margins based on a wide range of rate and fee combinations. Whilst this may work for their business, it can be a big headache for the average Joe.

Choosing the right mortgage product isn’t a two-minute job because it’s not a case of one mortgage fits all. The best deal will depend on your own personal circumstances, including the length of the term and the amount you’re looking to borrow.

Unlike personal loans or credit cards the answer isn’t as straightforward as referring to a best-buy table on a comparison website. Many lenders will advertise attention-grabbing interest rates, hoping they will win custom from those who don’t take the time to shop around or use the services of an independent mortgage broker.

It doesn’t help matters when you see newspaper front pages proclaiming “lowest ever” mortgage rates. In reality, the media has fallen for PR and marketing hype and failed to factor in the impact of four-digit associated fees. One of the biggest problems for consumers is working out which is the most appropriate mortgage

When you consider that your mortgage is likely to be the biggest financial transaction you’ll undertake in your lifetime, it makes sense to seek advice to ensure you don’t make what could be a potentially very expensive mistake. If you want to take the first step to seek out a new home loan, you can find details of an independent mortgage broker in your area by visiting www.unbiased.co.uk and entering your postcode.

The Artful Hare Alan Marshall

Mascot Media

ISBN 9780992991418 Hardback with many colour illustrations £27.50 Perhaps because this is still a region where hares can be seen reasonably frequently out in the wild, it seems the public here have a particular affinity with the animal. Alan Marshall’s painstaking compilation shows some of the very best prints by British artists depicting the charismatic hare. You might remember The Printmaker’s Cat, Alan’s anthology of the best prints of cats, which has been a bestseller over the last year or more. The new book inevitably does for hares what the previous one did for felines and every page contains a striking, beautiful, or arresting image.

hen people think of charity cookbooks they generally envisage a handful of not very inspiring recipes. In this case, though, think again. Here’s a book every bit as well-produced as anything by Rick Stein or Nigella Lawson and brimming with mouth-watering recipes contributed by the great and the good of Norfolk cookery and celebrity. The entire cover price will go to the Marie Curie charity, so you can feel doublyvirtuous by buying this book, both in helping a brilliant cause and gaining a genuinely fine cookbook.

orfolk and Suffolk are united by the course of the picturesque River Waveney as it meanders through meadows, towns and villages, before finally meeting the North Sea near Great Yarmouth. Its influence has helped shape the fortunes of a number of the region’s towns and this new book charts that influence, as well as recounting the stories of some of the fascinating people who have lived and worked in the Waveney Valley through the centuries. It chronicles the wealth of historic buildings in the area and some of the history that goes with them. Christopher Reeve is well-qualified to write this book: he was born in Bungay, worked in the region and has produced a number of local history titles.

n a bid to ensure that all internet users have the same experience regardless of which device they are using, Google recently announced that all websites need to be fully-optimised to work on smart phones and tablets, or they will be ranked lower.

past, the search engine has made updates to ensure websites it lists are “configured” (built) properly and viewable on modern devices. Just think of those websites that you are forever pinching, stretching and scrolling about on – the aim is for that to be a thing of the past.

Up until only a few years ago the Internet was accessed mainly by people on their computers and laptops… but along came smart phones and tablets, which have opened up Internet access to anyone, anywhere, anytime using a mobile device.

From late April 2015 Google started to expand its mobilefriendliness. The change means websites that aren’t compatible with modern devices are ranked lower than ones that do, despite the relevance of the information they contain. This affects mobile searches in all languages worldwide and is having a significant impact on Google search results.

When it comes to Google search on mobile devices, users are used to getting the most relevant and timely results, whether the information comes from mobilefriendly webpages or not. However, as more people use mobile devices to access the internet, Google has to adapt to these usage patterns. In the

Consequently, users will find it easier to get high-quality search results that

are optimised for whatever device they are using. What this means for your website If your website is not mobile device-friendly then its ranking on Google will be affected. Instead of appearing on the first page or two on Google, it may be buried under an avalanche of results. This will make it much harder for possible new business to find you, whilst mobile-friendly websites will rocket to the top and be found first. Take steps to make sure your website is compatible with multiple devices so your business isn’t affected by the change. Any reputable web-design service will be able to help you in doing so.

Megan’s main focus is general dentistry. Having been a dental phobic, Megan has excelled in assisting patients of all ages overcome their dental fears.

Netherton Dental Practice Thinking about getting your teeth whitened this summer? Beware who you trust to do it! Who can provide tooth whitening?

Q

Legally only registered dentists, dental therapists, dental hygienists and clinical technicians can perform tooth whitening.

How is it done?

Evidence shows that the most effective way is to apply a safe concentration of gel frequently. This is achieved with a tray which fits onto your teeth like a mouthguard. The tray is designed to keep the gel in place and to stop it leaking which can cause gum irritation.

Q

What is Tooth Whitening?

Tooth whitening is a simple way of enhancing the appearance of your teeth. This is achieved with a gel containing the active ingredients hydrogen or carbamide peroxide, which only dental professionals can legally use.

Q

Q

Can anybody have tooth whitening?

Tooth whitening will only affect natural teeth. Any fillings, crowns or denture teeth will not lighten! Whitening is also not advised during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

What are the side effects?

How long does it last?

Q

Teeth generally stay whiter for up to two years, but this can vary between individuals. Smoking, tea/coffee drinking can affect tooth whitening.

If performed safely there are very few side effects of tooth whitening. Occasionally teeth can become sensitive to cold during or after treatment. Gum irritation can also occur. These symptoms are usually temporary and disappear within days of finishing treatment.

Q

What do I do next if I wish to have my teeth whitened or find out more? Speak to your dentist or alternatively more information can be found online at www.gdc-uk.org or www.safetoothwhitening.org.
