I love that advert ‘it does exactly what it says on the tin.’ It’s a bit like that here at Village People HQ as our fabulous magazines are planned, written, created and delivered to ‘people who live in villages’! And if you’re interested in numbers, our 3 editions get delivered straight through the letterboxes of 45,000 of these lovely village homes and we’re now up to 190 villages in south Norfolk. Phew…

Drink Festival. How lucky are we to live in an area with so many talented local food and drink producers.

Kenyan school appeal success! Last December we told readers about the appeal to connect this remote mountain village school in Kenya to the mains electricity supply. We are pleased to announce that after 3 years of fund-raising the school is finally connected! Working with the school patron, Joshua Matu, Adullam’s Cave in Stowmarket have held several fundraisers and special sale events to raise the £3,000 needed. The school was finally connected in the summer. Sadly, only weeks after completing the work, Joshua died in hospital but not before seeing his greatest wish fulfilled. Thank you to all our customers and fundraisers who helped make this possible.

We are funded by local councils and are always in need of people with a spare room to let to someone who may be homeless or potentially homeless.

Lodgers are aged 18-65, single and have little or no support needs. They may have fallen out with their parents or had a relationship breakup. Very easy to locate, The King’s Head has a spacious car park where we reversed into a shady spot under a tree. My first impression of the place was of a typical ‘side of the road’pub; the road being the B1332 from Norwich to Bungay. We were greeted cheerfully by the staff and I ordered a half pint of Adnams Best Bitter. It was absolutely cold and lovely. We chose a corner table in the bar area, although, on later inspection, we discovered a separate proper dining room, and also a garden outside with tables available to diners. The menu offered about 14 different main course options and there was also a blackboard offering ‘Chef’s Recommendations’.

There is another option of a two course meal for £12, or three for £15 from a smaller three-option menu. Determined to try something other than fish I opted for the pan fried chicken with smoked bacon, croutons, anchovies, and Caesar salad. The strips of chicken were scrumptious; golden brown and tender in the centre, the salad was fresh and crisp, but I have to admit to not really liking anchovies, so I left them. My companion, who was responsible for picking the pub nearest to a brilliant garden centre, chose pan fried salmon, smoked salmon, prawns and artichoke risotto. Having once been witness to the soggiest, wettest risotto, I worried about her choice. No need; it was creamy and moist and held together well. Her salmon was big and beautifully cooked. Both our meals were very prettily arranged on rectangular white plates, and were of really generous proportion. No tiny servings with palm trees made out of cucumbers and circles of jus drizzled on huge plates here! We needn’t have worried, in fact my friend (who is thinner than I am), was compelled to leave a little of hers to make room for pudding.

Oh pudding! I chose treacle tart, and was delighted by the more than satisfactory size of it; my friend chose chocolate and amaretto tart, also plentiful. Both of these came with ice cream – mine vanilla, the other pistachio – and were decorated with physalis berries and succulent aromatic raspberries. Very pretty, very delicious. To finish, I asked for strong black coﬀee and was not disappointed. The service was timely and attentive but without that annoying ‘is everything all right’ every two minutes. The pub looked lively with notices about entertainment and quiz nights. Unfortunately the toilets were down four steps, and not large, so I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant for disabled use. Having said that, the facilities were being refurbished, so watch this space.

And the garden centre? Just down the road you’ll find Homestead Nurseries at Kirstead; quality plants at small prices. Well worth a visit.

BOTTOM LINE

t ’s always nice to combine lunch with a trip to a nearby attraction; more so when the attraction is a garden centre, and a jolly good one at that. But that ’s not what you want to hear about is it?

The Maddermarket beautiful andTheatre intimate

The 92-year-old theatre thrills audiences with their in-house productions of stage plays and visiting productions that include everything from rock to light opera. The Snow Queen which opens 20th December through to 4th January. The Snow Queen is a superb family show and is one of Hans Christian Anderson’s most widely acclaimed stories. When Kay is snatched from his home by the beautiful, cruel Snow Queen, his friend Gerda sets out on an epic journey to rescue him. As she searches, she encounters a series of strangers who help her to find the Snow Queen’s icy palace. For this show the theatre has introduced two new levels of great value family ticket. People Mixing the poignant and the humorous, Alan Bennett’s story of companionship, family ties and nostalgia is on its way to Norwich Theatre Royal.

eople follows two sisters pondering the future of their family pile to decide whether to sell it to shadowy corporate interests or donate it to the National Trust. Alan Bennett talked to Village People about the National Theatre production and its stunning cast.

People is like much of Alan Bennett’s work. On the surface, it is a richly characterised piece about some gloriously eccentric women living in surroundings that could almost be described as shabby chic. But dig a bit further and, as with much of the legendary Yorkshire playwright’s work, you find a rich mine of humour, superb dialogue and comment on people’s love of browsing around houses. As Alan explains: “When I go around country houses and sometimes exhibitions, I look at other people and I think ‘what have they come for? ’Straight after that, I think ‘what have I come for?’ “When the play first started being performed at the National Theatre, it was taken to be a criticism of the National Trust but it’s not really. It is about looking at country houses, the business of conservation, and how you present and show oﬀ these places. I couldn’t settle that in my mind which is why I wrote the play.” It follows the story of two sisters pondering the future of their home which, although beautiful, beautiful has fallen into disrepair disr and needs some work doing on it. A huge hit in London, the touring version boasts some strong casting with the hugely experienced exper Siân Phillips and the everpopular Brigit Forsyth in the cast, along with Selina Cadell reprising her National Theatre role. Passion for theatre has been at the core of Alan Bennett life since he Bennett’s was a boy heading to The Grand Theatre Th in Leeds

to enjoy the latest touring productions. He recalled: “All the London plays would either come on a pre or post-London tour often with the original cast after a West End run. I saw Laurence Olivier in The Entertainer and the original production of Waiting For Godot. Sometimes there were only 30 people in the audience.” Alan is already jotting down ideas for future projects. “The History Boys was very hard to follow because it was such a big success and we had such a good time doing it. I was relieved when A Habit of Art did well,” said Alan. “I have a funny relationship with the National Theatre director Nicholas Hytner, who has also directed People, in that it ought to be master and pupil in terms of age with me being master but it is actually the other way around. I do feel I want to please him. That’s a great spur.” This production once again combines those Alan Bennett themes of humour, poignancy and characterisation that truly make him deserving of the title National Treasure.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Based on Suzanne Collins’ hit young adult novel, The Hunger Games was not only extremely successful (making almost $700m at the box oﬃce) but also an excellent film. Director Gary Ross shot it in an edgy, handheld style that conveyed the horror of a world where teenagers are sent out to fight to the death for public amusement and political repression. Graced by a superb performance by Jennif Lawrence, which Jennifer no doubt contributed to her Oscar win as Best Actress fo Silver Linings Playbook, for the film had a depth far be beyond most teen fare. Th new film brings to The the screen the second book in Collins’ trilogy, trilogy and the action becomes darker and even more tragic, though edged with the hope that President Snow (Donald Sutherland) so fears. Directed by Francis Lawrence (who made the excellent Constantine with Keanu Reeves) this is sure to build on the strengths of the first film and will hopefully add more richness, both to the characters and the visuals. Highly recommended. Release: 21st November

The Counsellor

Master stylist Ridley Scott directs a beautiful cast in a Cormac McCarthy thriller about a lawyer caught up in drug traﬃcking. With Brad Pitt, Natalie Dormer, Goran Visnjic, Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Cameron Diaz on acting duties, there is sure to be someone you fancy watching. Scott has made a great career for himself with his sci-fi classics Alien and Blade Runner, and epic masterpiece Gladiator, but has also made a steady stream of thrillers, such as the classic Thelma and Louise and the more recent Hannibal and American Gangster. Sometimes you get the feeling that his films suﬀer from a surfeit of style over substance, but with McCarthy hy on writing duties and a very able cast, perhaps this one will right that balance. A very watchable film is in any case assured. Release: 15th November

Thor: The Dark World I wasn’t going to include a comic book adaptation this time, but Natalie Portman is in it. The perfect Ms Portman has not done anything else since Thor in 2011 (though she is set to be in Terrence Malick’s upcoming sure-to-be masterpiece Knight of Cups). Portman has grown into both her beauty and her acting ability, and fans have great hopes for the rest of her career - she is likely only to get better. In this sequel Portman reprises the role of scientist Jane Foster, girlfriend of Thor. This time she is the target of the evil baddies, and as the poster has her in Asgardian garb she will probably get to meet her parents-in-law to be. Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor, fresh from his adventures with fellow Marvel Avengers, as does brother Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston. Let’s hope that that film’s success brings an even bigger audience to Thor’s world it’s one worth getting to know. Release: 30th October

UK’s rarest dog arrives in Diss E arlier this year, one of the world’s rarest dogs arrived in Norfolk all the way from Schoonhoven in Holland. She is only the 6th Stabyhoun on UK soil and one of just 3,500 worldwide.

Yoda has been imported as part of an initiative to establish this wonderful breed in England.

ABOUT THE STABYHOUN The UK Stabyhoun Association was formed in January 2013 and a few months ago, the group began taking applications from people in England interested in getting a Stabyhoun puppy. The first litter was born on English soil this summer.

Christina Savage began working on the project early in 2012. She said: “When I was born my family had a lovely female Stabyhoun named Blijke. She was a truly wonderful family dog; loving, gentle and very child-friendly. At that time I was living in Denmark where a small population of this breed exits. When the UK import rules changed on 1 January 2012 it became possible to bring puppies into

this country. It opened the door for me to get a Stabyhoun again and now we are introducing this amazing dog to other families in England.” The role of the UK Stabyhoun Association is to manage all import of Stabyhoun puppies to the UK as well as implement a controlled and closely monitored breeding programme to build a healthy population and protect the health and temperament of the breed. Christina added: “Families in England who are interested in one of these very special dogs will not only get a loving and loyal companion; they could play an important role in establishing this breed of dog in the UK.” Anyone who is interested in a Stabyhoun puppy should email christina@stabyhounUK.com for a copy of the application form.

She has been dining out and about in our area for many years, seeking out restaurants that offer great value, quality and above all else are child friendly. do not usually write reviews on chain restaurants, however, I felt I needed to make an exception for Loch Fyne.

Restaurants specialising in fish are very far and few between unless you are lucky enough to live in coastal towns. But when I chanced upon Loch Fyne, I was so impressed by their ethos and family welcome that I decided to break with tradition and recommend a chain! As soon as you walk through the doors of any Loch Fyne restaurant you immediately feel that you are by the seaside! You can see an abundance of fresh fish and shellfish in the display counter right by the chef, so it’s evident that fresh ingredients are used. The interior is fantastic and my children just loved it. It’s bright, airy, fresh and modern. Families are encouraged and welcomed, with children given crayons and a menu with puzzles and pictures to colour in. Loch Fyne oﬀers a great introduction to fish for children, although I would have preferred more fish options (three out of six are fish options whilst the others are pasta, burger or bangers and mash). The fish choices include mussels and fries, salmon fillet with broccoli and crunchy haddock goujons with mushy peas. The children’s menu includes two courses, including ice cream for dessert for a very reasonable £6.

My husband choose the seafood tagliatelle for £14.95, but luckily ordered the seafood medley side order which consists of a few fresh mussels, scallops and a grilled king prawn, as the portion of pasta was very small. Despite a couple of blips, we would certainly go back again as we loved the ambiance, the wine list is great and it doesn’t have the ‘chain’ feel to it. It actually reminds me of some of the restaurants I used to go to on the Jersey Shore when I lived in the States. I would recommend going as a family for lunch or dinner before 6pm as they oﬀer a set 2 course menu for adults for £9.95 and 3 courses for £11.95 which oﬀers better value for families.

There are 42 restaurants in the UK, so if you are out and about and see a Loch Fyne, pop in and give it a try and see what you think. One thing I will guarantee is that if you love fish you will find it hard to choose from the extensive menu and you will end up looking at all the dishes coming out to see if someone has ordered something better than you!

I ordered the salmon fillet at £13.95, which you can have cooked three ways; pan fried, grilled or steamed. I chose pan fried and I have to admit that it was overcooked and very dry, which was a shame as salmon should be juicy and succulent.

Masterpieces from East Anglia

o mark the opening of Masterpieces: Art and East Anglia, a new exhibition at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Art, we have selected some items which celebrate the rich and distinctive culture of East Anglia, and what’s more, they’re all from villages near you. The exhibition will present some 250 objects like this, which the region has inspired, produced and collected, as well as treasures that have long been associated with the area. From paintings to sculpture and photography to fashion, Masterpieces promises to be a diverse and ambitious exhibition.

A Shoot in a Swede Field 1901, by Alfred Munnings

Alfred Munnings (1878-1959) was born on the Norfolk-Suﬀolk border at Mendham Mill and lived at Swainsthorpe in the early years of the 20th century, while painting some of his best pictures. A Shoot in a Swede Field, set under the glow of an October sun, records a shoot which took place in the parishes of Bunwell and Ashwellthorpe. Munnings said the work had “...a truth about it...” noting each of the characters recognised their portraits and those of their dogs. His work at this time was in the tradition of British Rural Naturalism, akin to that of Herbert Henry La Thangue, for whom he felt an aﬃnity.

The Crownthorpe Hoard drinking cups AD 60, unknown maker This magnificent pair of drinking cups were part of a larger deposit known as the Crownthorpe Hoard. The hoard was discovered in 1982 in the parish of Wicklewood at the site of a Late Iron Age settlement. The cups were deliberately hidden in the ground, together with other vessels, when the Iceni tribe rose against the Romans under the leadership of Queen Boudica.

Mary Newcomb (1922-2008) was a visionary painter, who lived and worked at Newton Flotman for 20 years from the late 1970s. She turned to painting in 1955 to articulate quirky responses to the world of the Waveney Valley around her and the visual poetry within her. Her subjects were rural rituals and festivals,

the seasons, light and night in the countryside, ﬂora and fauna, and incidents observed from her bicycle, or a bus or a train. The Apple Pickers Going Home is one of two paintings recalling her time working in an orchard at Weybread near Harleston.

1988, by Margaret Mellis Margaret Mellis (19142009) was both a pivotal figure in modernist British art and an artist of great versatility and originality. She lived and painted at Syleham for 25 years from 1951, and got her inspiration for much of her work from the Suﬀolk coast.

1960, by Robin Welch Robin Welch, painter and potter, is based at Stradbroke in Suﬀolk where he has developed his characteristic thrown, coiled and slab-built forms. He has designed for major companies such as Wedgewood and Denby. This particular stoneware bowl from the 1960s belongs to Sir David Attenborough, a great collector of modern ceramics and champion of Welch.

At an Aylsham Fair in the 1860s a canny Norfolk entrepreneur probably saw a steam organ engine and roundabout devised by Sidney Soame of Marsham. utumn – is it the start or the end of the gardening season? Yes, it’s true that the natural growing cycle is coming to an end and plants are beginning to shut down for a winter rest, but at the same time, many gardening jobs can commence now the fullness of summer has passed. So, the answer to the question is ‘both’!

made up of daffodils, tulips and alliums, but whatever you fancy try to choose a mixture of varieties that will flower at different times so that you can keep the colour show going for as long as possible. Many bulb flowers are also great for cutting, so be generous in planting which will allow you to bring bunches indoors for vases. If space is limited, plant bulbs in pots and containers, then top off with some cheerful winter pansies or violas for a colour splash both now and later on.

As the long days shorten and nights draw in, temperatures start to cool, triggering deciduous trees and shrubs to take on their autumn hues, giving a diﬀerent feel to the garden. The fiery reds of acers, buttery yellows of ginkgo and the warm orange tones of cotinus start to appear. These along with other magical choices such as hamamelis (Witch hazel), berberis, amelanchier and Euonymus europaeus (Spindle tree), all put on a fantastic show, whilst on walls and fences parthenocissus (Boston ivy and Virginia creeper) and grape vines make everything around them seem to glow.

Mulches of chipped bark or decorative stones applied now will not only look great, but if spread thickly will insulate and protect delicate roots from damaging winter frosts – and if combined with a fabric weed control will reduce another task in the spring! Try to spend some time outdoors looking at your own and other people’s gardens assessing what looks good now and what performed well during the summer, then plan any changes you may wish to make. Autumn is a great time to plant as the soil is still warm below the surface and has moisture within it to help plants establish, giving them a head-start over spring plantings. Good soil improvement and a sprinkling of bonemeal or Vitax Q4+ (with mycorrhizal fungi) into planting holes will help encourage plants to put out roots more quickly. Changes and improvements can be major or minor but any will make a diﬀerence. Minor changes could include the planting of some spring-ﬂowering bulbs; maybe a simple patch of early crocus or great blocks of colour

Very soon the autumn leaves will fall, leaving stems naked and herbaceous plants dormant. This heralds the start of the traditional bare-root season when we offer a wide range of plant choices sourced locally and lifted fresh to order. Field-grown plants grow strongly and offer substantial cost savings over container-grown stock, so talk to us if your plans include a patch of perennials, some ornamental trees (birch, sorbus, flowering cherry, etc), productive fruit (apples, pears, plums, currants, etc), or a new hedge made up of native species (hawthorn, dogwood, sloe, beech, hazel, etc) which will be of great benefit to wildlife. Gardens shouldn’t look bare at any time of year, evergreen plants, such as elaeagnus, osmanthus, mahonia, heathers and a host of exciting conifers are just a few choices that will add structure and may provide shelter, so make sure to include some in your scheme for a never-ending, year-round gardening season!

Tree Seeds

n the last issue we looked at the different kinds of tree flowers. The seeds are produced when the female flower is fertilised. Trees cannot move so they either make the seed edible so they are distributed by animals and birds or utilise wind and water; the aim is to get the seed as far away as possible from the parent tree.

Berries and fruits are brightly coloured to attract birds and the seed gets passed out with the droppings. Nuts are edible seeds and are distributed by mammals and birds when they are buried for future consumption but forgotten and germinate instead. Some seed casings are impenetrable to all but the most determined

foragers – the Brazil nut is one of the toughest but it is the staple food for the agoutis. Many dry seeds rely on the wind for dispersal. One of the smallest is eucalyptus seed which is like a fine dust. Some have wings, like sycamore keys, which help keep them air borne. Alder trees grow alongside water; each of their seeds is attached to a droplet of oil which keeps the seed aﬂoat, wherever it touches land it will attempt to grow. The largest seed comes from the coco de mer palm which is found in the Seychelles. It looks like an enormous double coconut and takes 10 years to ripen. They can weigh up to 45lb(20kg).

Inside each ripe tree seed are the beginnings of a root, shoot and two specialised leaves – cotyledons. The first to appear is the root which no matter how the seed lies will grow downwards (geotropic). Once this starts supplying water and nutrients the shoot appears – upwards (heliotropic). The cotyledons begin the photosynthesis and shortly afterwards the true leaves appear and the tree begins to grow. Amazing things – trees.

October and November bring with them damp, mellow days and in these conditions something strange happens. Almost as if there has been an alien invasion, mushrooms appear complete with ﬂying saucer shaped caps. This issue, wildlife expert Jon Tyler takes us on a trip into the magic world of mushrooms.

hese amazing life forms look other-worldly with a myriad of shapes and colours that seem curiously out of place, like a modern art instillation gone feral. With names ranging from toadstools to fairy rings, an association with witches and even ones that glow in the dark, it’s no wonder that mushrooms (also known as fungi) provoke strong feeling, both positive and negative. Here are 10 distinctive species to get you started on your journey to another world. As aliens go the Stinkhorn fungi takes some beating, it even hatches from an egg! The scourge of Victorian sensibilities with its provocative shape and unpleasant aroma of drains; yet on closer inspection it’s an engineering marvel with its intricate woven lattice structure. Look (or smell) for them in leaf litter early in October. If the stinkhorn is the alien then the Shaggy Ink-cap is more of a magician, complete with disappearing trick. Also known as the Lawyers wig mushroom they don’t hang about, dissolving into inky spore goo, which is then

washed into the ground by rain; blink and you might miss it! More magic arrives in the form of the Fairy –ring champignon, well known for growing in circles on lawns, sports fields and pasture. Legend has it that if you washed your face in the

dew inside a fairy ring at sunrise you would meet your true love within the year. Let us know how you get on. Everyone’s favourite fairy tale mushroom, the Fly agaric, is a photogenic species with its distinctive red cap and white spots; always growing close to birch trees. It belongs to a group of mushrooms that contain some of the most poisonous species in Europe; with names to match such as, Death-cap and Destroying angel. Easily over looked in leaf litter under trees, Earth-stars continue the other- worldly feel. Starting off as a sack, they split open in a more or less star shaped pattern which then curls underneath to raise the central ball up on a platform like a fungal Lunar Lander. Closely related, Puffballs are nature’s golf balls or footballs depending on which type you encounter! Giant puffballs can be up to a metre in diameter and contain as many as 7 trillion spores. Which if they all germinated would cover the entire land mass of the

earth with puffballs, how’s that for an alien invasion! The Amethyst Deceiver is very common and is one of only a handful of purple mushrooms. As the name suggests they can be very variable in tone; ranging from a rich vibrant purple when fresh and young, fading to almost buff when older and dry, although the gills underneath always retain the amethyst hue. Candle snuff fungus is small but amazing to see, growing all year round on dead tree branches and stumps, they really do look like snuffed out candle wicks. On the other hand Dead man’s fingers grow Fly agaric

in similar places but have a more gruesome name and appearance. The Jelly ear can be spotted as rubbery appendages on the dead branches of elder trees any time of the year; fat and squidgy when wet, they become shrivelled and brittle when dry. Of course there are many edible wild mushrooms, but with such wondrous species out there, why not take the opportunity to get to know more about the amazing diversity found in the fungi kingdom first. wildforwoods.co.uk

In the fourth of a series of five articles, Sarah Doig looks at the observations made by François de la Rochefoucauld who visited Suffolk and Norfolk in 1784.

o far in my series looking at travel writing through the centuries, I have quoted from observations made by British visitors to East Anglia. This time, however, it is the turn of the Frenchman, François de la Rochefoucauld. He and his brother stayed for a year in Bury St Edmunds in 1784; a time when the town was considered at the height of its prosperity and a fashionable place to be and to be seen. The 18 year old Frenchman toured the region and recorded his observations of East Anglian life. “You cannot imagine the quantity of travellers who are always on the road in England. You cannot go from one post to another without meeting two or three post-chaises.” These horse-drawn, closed carriages contained one seat for two or three passengers, and were available to hire.

He remarks on the “depth of wisdom and justice” in Parliament having passed laws governing the labourer’s day: “All working days are fixed between six a.m. and six p.m., summer and winter: from these twelve hours, one and a half are subtracted; half an hour for breakfast and an hour for dinner... Their wage is fixed, but depends on the district they are in... On the farms they hire their regular workmen by the year, as in France. In the Bury neighbourhood they are paid between eight and nine guineas a year, and food, lodging etc. They have nothing to do but clothe themselves... “At harvest-time the arrangements are completely diﬀerent: the farmers contract for all the hands they need and make a bargain with them to complete the whole job. In the Bury neighbourhood they give four and half guineas to each man for cutting and harvesting all the wheat, oats and barley.”

He goes on to describe the other two ways to travel at this time: “Saddle-horses cost two shillings for an occasional hire, and three [shillings] when you take them for a day to go for a trip for two or three days. Cabriolet-horses, with the cabriolet, cost four shillings the occasional hire and five for the day when you go on a journey... I don’t even find these prices exorbitant. When you take a post-chaise to go out to dinner or see someone in the country, you pay from five to eight shillings according to the distance.” François de la Rochefoucauld also wrote extensively about his experiences of farming in the late eighteenth

All the young people that I see in society appear badly brought up: they hum, they whistle, they sit in the largest armchairs and put their feet up on the nearest chair.”! ever heard of NORLSAR? Well, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not surprising considering that last time I checked, Norfolk hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t got any mountains that people can either get lost or fall down on! Nevertheless there is still a requirement in Norfolk for search and rescue services.

Norfolk Lowland Search and Rescue (NorLSAR) are a registered charity consisting of a group of volunteers, who are trained in search and rescue techniques and are prepared to help Norfolk Constabulary search for vulnerable missing people 365 days a year. NorLSAR are a 24/7 service and they aim to always have a team

ready to help search for missing people. Along with 26 other Lowland Search and Rescue teams in the country, NorLSAR form part of Lowland Rescue, who are associate members of Mountain Rescue England & Wales and also form part of the UK SAR Operators Group along with the police, fire, ambulance, RNLI and coastguard services. Most searches are undertaken on foot by search teams, sometimes supported by the mountain bike team and the trained water bank search team. They also work with swiftwater rescue teams as well as air scenting search dogs. Training is undertaken twice a month, either outdoors at locations around Norfolk or indoors in Norwich, Dereham or Hethersett. Training is often carried out jointly with other organisations such as 4X4 Response, HM Coastguard, and Norfolk Fire & Rescue together with their Urban Search & Rescue Team.

A nine-day celebration of the best local food and drink

Friday 4th October - Sunday 13th October The festival kicks off on Friday 4th October with a food debate at the Fisher Theatre in Bungay. Following that will be a week of fantastic events taking place across the whole Waveney Valley including the Battle of the Bangers in Diss on Saturday 5th October. Diss has been named one of the healthiest places to live in Norfolk – only one of a handful of towns awarded Cittaslow (literally slow city) status. The aim of Cittaslow is to improve the quality of life for its residents and visitors, by resisting the day-to-day hustle and bustle of modern times encouraging people to take time over enjoyable aspects of life, including food. Characterised by its tranquil river and its mile upon mile of stunning views across some of the richest farmland in England, the Waveney Valley produces an outstanding quality and diverse range of food and drink.

Award-winning ales from fabulous microbreweries, to fresh pressed cider and apple juice, rare breed meats, artisan chocolates and talented local chefs – the Waveney Valley has it all. After the big success of last year’s festival, the 2013 festival has been extended to last all week, so there’s sure to be an event you’re interested in. Autumn Recipes And here we are, in the middle of autumn again! Whether you love or loathe the ‘trick or treating’, the bonﬁres and the ﬁreworks – the food is always lovely and comforting.

Simple Tomato Chutney Stilton, Potato and Onion P ie INGREDIENTS

1kg ripe tomatoes, peeled and chopped 750g cooking apples, peeled, cored and chopped 375g light muscovado sugar 250g onions, chopped 250g raisins (optional) 1 green pepper, deseeded and chopped 2 tsp salt ½ tsp ground ginger 350ml cider vinegar 1. We have such a glut of tomatoes around us and this is possibly the simplest chutney ever! Tomatoes are easy to peel if you drop them in a jug of boiled water for a minute or so and the skins will split for you. 2. In a large pan, and over a medium heat, add all of the ingredients and bring to the boil. Stir occasionally until the sugar has dissolved, and then allow the mixture to continue boiling, uncovered, for about 45-50 minutes until thickened, and the fruit is tender. Cool, then transfer to a sterilised jar and seal.

Preheat the oven to 2000C/Gas Mark 6 1. Boil the potatoes until they’re tender (15-20 minutes) 2. Meanwhile half the onions and then cut each half into 6 segments (like an orange). In a heavy based pan, and over a moderate/low heat, melt half of the butter and add the onions until they are nicely sticky – this should take 20-25 minutes and is worth every one! 3. In a small pan, boil the milk and turn oﬀ the heat. Drain the potatoes and tip into a large bowl. Mash as you slowly add the milk, and then the remaining butter. Stop mashing before it becomes gloopy. This is easier in a food processor should you feel inclined. 4. In a buttered baking dish, spoon in half the potato and add the softened onions in a layer on top. Season with a few grindings of pepper. Chop or crumble the Stilton and add this on top of the onion layer. Spoon over the remaining 1.5kg potatoes, floury ones, peeled potato and smooth a little. Sprinkle over the parmesan and quartered and bake for half an hour, or 4 medium onion, peeled until the filling is bubbling up and the top is lightly golden. 225-250 g Stilton (or your

This autumn, we talked to Rod and Hazel Champkin about their business, Classic Covers. What sort of covers do you make? All sorts! Over the years we’ve made covers for everything from big expensive boats to a dog bed! Nothing is too big or too small. A cover can be a simple ﬂat sheet, or a tailored 3-dimensional shape. How about material? There’s a huge choice of fabric to work with. It all depends on what you want it to do, and we’re always happy to advise on the best for your needs. Plain green PVC is inexpensive, and popular for garden and trailer covers, for example, while marine cover fabrics are high-tech, breathable and fade-free. It goes without saying that they’re waterproof.

Can you repair damaged items? Of course. We can often fix something that looks beyond repair, so it’s worth showing us what you have. Tents and awnings often need new zips & windows – no problem! If your cover is protecting something important, we can usually do a same-day repair, provided we know beforehand. Does my cover need maintenance? In a nutshell, yes – the old saying about a stitch in time is very true. If you have an older cover, the fabric may be fine but the threads used might be suﬀering from sunlight degradation and be starting to fail, in which case we can restitch it. This is easier if the cover hasn’t actually fallen apart yet! Keeping your

Make your own autumn shades earrings Can’t ﬁnd what you’re looking for in the shops? Why not make it yourself? This issue, our crafty lady, Caroline, shows us how to make earrings!

1. Place three of your beads (one of each shade), onto your first head pin in the order you prefer. 2. Using your rosary pliers and fingers, bend the head pen to one side.

7. To make a tidy finish, I like to clip oﬀ the end of the head pin wire at an angle.

3. Now, move your pliers to help you bend the head pin in the other direction. This is the beginning of the loop which attaches to your ear hook.

8. Open the loop on one of your earring hooks and place your completed head pin onto it. Be sure to open the loop side ways so as not to stress the metal.

4.With your fingers, bring the head pin around to form a full circle. 5. I hate to waste long head pins so I like to wrap them around twice to form a unique double loop. You might find that you need to turn your head pin around for better leverage. 6. Now wrap the remainder of the pin just below the loops you have made. A second pair of pliers may come in handy at this point.

Why women should lift weight to lose fat Increasing and maintaining muscle is one of the best ways to keep body fat at bay and to improve overall fitness, particularly as we age. The best way to build muscle mass is by weight lifting. So, why is it that the number of women participating in strength training remains low? By combining cardiovascular training, such as running, cycling or rowing, with strength training, you will see the benefits, fast.

The trainers at Fit Club have compiled a list of six reasons why women should train for strength: 1. Be physically stronger. With moderate training, a woman’s strength can increase by 30-50% making daily chores easier. 2. Lose body fat. nternational textile artist, tutor and author, Annette Morgan, is showcasing her quilts in Wymondham to help launch her fourth book, Sticks and Stones which was inspired by Thetford Forest and the flint cottage where she lives. The solo exhibition from October 21 to 28 at the Wymondham Arts Centre, Becket’s Chapel, Church Street, is a celebration of this gifted quilt artist who has pushed the boundaries using all types of mixed media and has exhibited in America, Australia, Europe and Japan. Her new book is a unique joint venture with husband, church leader and artist, Dan, who has painted many of the illustrations at the workshop in their Thetford garden while Annette’s labour of love is done from their conservatory. She draws on a rich depth of artistic talent that runs through her family and a tireless enthusiasm and energy. “I have always liked to sew and knit and was taught by my late father,” says Annette who went on to make clothes and wedding dresses. But her textile journey began when she visited a quilt exhibition with a friend in King’s Lynn. Annette was fascinated and recognised the scope they oﬀered. She borrowed a book from the library

to help her make her first quilt and soon joined a two-year City and Guilds class at Norwich City College 20 years ago. Since then she has never looked back; invitations to show and demonstrate her work and teach followed as she has built on her expertise. “I thank God for the talent he has given me. I believe your gift from God is what God has given you and your gift to God is what you do with it. If there is anything in your heart that you wish to do I would say get the training and do it,” she insists. “I enjoy the process of making. If they get selected for exhibition, sell or win awards that is a bonus,” says the former theatre sister who showed a natural ability for teaching student nurses during their placements in the operating theatres. Today she is teaching the new and innovative textile techniques that have taken months and years to hone and perfect using image transfer, photography, screen printing, foils, paper, paint, and dye to dramatically change black or white fabric into works of art. “I see myself as a facilitator,” says Annette who runs two-year and four-year City and Guilds Certificate and Diploma courses at the Women’s Institute headquarters in Ipswich for a wide cross-section of women through Creative Stitch Suﬀolk

She also runs workshops, distance learning courses through the WI and Denman College and is a quilting judge. “I like to think I have helped put women on the road to their own creative well-being,” says the woman who has been President and Vice-President of the Quilters’ Guild, won numerous prestigious awards and has been featured regularly in the textile press. Annette is also co-founder of two exhibiting groups. Your employer may pay some sick pay, but it will certainly be less than you normally get. The situation is more severe for those who are self-employed, as no work means no income.

his car handles far better than it looks. It’s also punchier and more comfortable than you might imagine. You see, the Chevrolet Cruze 1.7 VCDi LT Hatchback gives the impression of being a tiny bit boring and mediocre. From the overly-ﬂexible door panels to the hollow-sounding interior plastics, everything just oozes ‘budget’. But is this a bad thing if the car is reasonably priced? Probably not in today’s economic climate.

You see, people still want nice things, even when life isn’t quite as sweet as it used to be – and a shiny motor is one of them. Let’s face it, there’s nothing quite like the heady scent of a brand new car – and knowing you’re the first owner gives you a kind of thrill. So, what’s the Cruze like inside? Straight away, the iﬀy looking parttextile covered, plasticky dashboard lets things down a bit, but in lots of other ways the Chevy is admirable. For a start, getting comfy behind the wheel is easy. The driver’s seat hugs PROS ‘N’ CONS . In mid-range LT trim, under review here, the Cruze Hatchback incorporates features such as cruise control, electric windows, a multifunction trip computer, parking distance sensors, remote audio controls and a leather steering wheel and gearknob. What a shame I couldn’t find a USB port for my i-Phone though.

Under the bonnet, lurks a 1686 cc four cylinder 16 valve turbo diesel engine, although it feels more like a 2.0 litre oil-burner. There’s heaps of low down shove, meaning you can stir up a swell of power quite easily – and that makes overtaking easy. The six-speed manual gearshift is slick and precise and getting from 0-62mph only takes 9.8 seconds. Okay, that’s not blisteringly speedy – but it’s impressive enough for a five-seater family car.

Regardless of some seemingly low-rent materials used on the Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback, it’s not a bad piece of kit for £18,115. Indeed, in five-door guise, the car is even more practical than its saloon sibling which already has one of the biggest load areas in its class. The boot is big, square and deep, so that should tick a major box for anyone looking for a new set-of-wheels that will swallow a pushchair or two, and the weekly supermarket shop.

The engine isn’t just a respectable performer; it’s also fuel-efficient and emits low carbon dioxide (CO2). Returning an official average of 62.7 mpg and giving off just 117 g/km of CO2, the 1.7 VCDi propelled Cruze Hatchback is likely to appeal to private and fleet customers alike.
