We had a film crew in the office this week as Village People was chosen to feature at this year’s prestigious Independent Publishers Conference. All very exciting and it got me thinking just how far we’ve come in six years; from producing and delivering 5,000 magazines back in 2008 (with my office just one end of my dining room table) to the massive 50,000 copies we produce now and a growing team of six. With the help of my calculator I’ve worked out that we’ve produced 870,000 fabulous magazines in the last six years; all packed full of local and interesting content. Saturday 31st May saw people with a range of disabilities taking part in a sponsored walkathon around Whitlingham Broad to raise money for BUILD Charity. BUILD is a Norfolk based independent registered charity, oﬀering social, leisure and learning opportunities for people with physical, sensory and learning disabilities. The walkathon saw members, volunteers, staﬀ, trustees and family members walking one or more of the 2.25 mile laps around Whitlingham Broad. One of the 55 walkers was 82-year old member Victor Hall who has long-term health problems but managed the lap with his stick. The youngest walker was 17-year old Katherine Beaumont, who completed two laps with her parents, both of whom are volunteers for the charity. SOMETHING HISTORIC IS HAPPENING IN DISS

A complete regeneration of the historic heart of Diss is taking shape. The plans will transform the way people see the town’s traditional centre – the Corn Hall and the ‘Heritage Triangle’ which links St Nicholas Street, Market Hill and Market Place. And a new aspect of the Mere will be opened up. It’s hoped that these plans will bring more shops and activity to the town, with more visitors and more jobs. Diss will be an outstanding shopping and tourist attraction in South Norfolk and an even more rewarding place to live.

EY CHURCH EYE CHUR ART AR EXHIBITION Given a long August Bank Holiday weekend what can you do? Why not come to Eye in Suﬀolk where once again the parish church will be full of wonderful art for the annual exhibition and a sale of pictures. It all started as a sale of paintings, but over the years photographers, printmakers and textile artists have come too, making “pictures” a better description. Artists come from all over East Anglia and beyond, some professionals and many amateurs, all producing high quality work to show and sell. As well as the framed pictures on the screens you can buy unframed originals, prints and cards. The Art Exhibition raises funds for Eye church. It is open all day on Friday 22nd, Saturday 23rd and Monday 25th August and all afternoon on Sunday 24th August.

Plans include regeneration of the Diss Corn Hall, including improved facilities and an attractive courtyard. The Mere will gain a boardwalk to take pedestrians from Mere Street to a floating island. LEARN TO UNDERSTAND DEMENTIA The ‘Virtual Dementia Tour’ is a fairly new approach in the UK, to providing care workers with handson experience of what it’s like to have dementia. Participants use technology and wear special clothing to recreate the sensory impairment experienced by people with dementia. It is endorsed by leading clinical practitioners in the dementia field as possibly being the most powerful tool developed, enabling carers to understand how dementia aﬀects people.

Flagship is one of the first care providers in the UK to promote this initiative as it reflects the Flagship ethos. Flagship has Extra Care Schemes that have specialist areas that cater for people with early stage dementia. NORWICH SUNBLINDS SUPPORTS MS-UK Norwich Sunblinds are a local company who have decided to give something back to the community. They’ve promised to contribute £1 for every blind and pair of curtains sold this year to local charities. Each month they will be supporting a different local charity. The staff are looking forward to finding out how many blinds/curtains have been sold each day to contribute towards the charity. farm shop! This is (reputedly) the best, it’s near where I live and I have been told about it over and over again – but never been. From the outside it’s a large silver-grey building which can almost be seen from the A140 just south of Long Stratton. Oh… but inside! As Howard Carter said, peering into the Tomb of Tutankhamen: ‘Yes, wonderful things’. We had gone there to eat – of course – but had to inspect the tempting retail goods on oﬀer first. Delicatessen cheeses and meats, gourmet ready-meals, epicurean loose teas, oils, vinegars and dressings (take your own bottle for a refill), homemade cakes and biscuits and veg of course… oh you get the picture. And it’s so big! And so to eat: we had reserved a table, but as there were about 20 pine tables in the spacious food hall booking may have been unnecessary. Lunch options were chalked up on boards including allday breakfasts and various baguettes for about £6.50. There was a ‘Today’s Specials’ board from which my friend chose pork curry with rice and garlic bread and I chose quiche with chips and salad.

The quiche came in three diﬀerent varieties; feta and olives, quiche lorraine and a cheese and tomato one. They sell wine by the glass, and the cost of a large one was a reasonable £4.20. Once seated we didn’t have to wait long for the food. It looked splendid but my portion of quiche looked as if half of it was missing, so I mentioned this to Lara, our waitress. She went back and forth between our table and kitchen to ascertain whether I wanted (a) another bit, (b) hot or cold and (c) would I accept a diﬀerent filling as the cheese and onion one had expired. ‘Yes, hot, and the one with olives’ secured me not just a top-up but a whole extra piece at no extra charge, and done willingly. My friend with the curry, meanwhile, while, pronounced it a decent level of spiciness for ladies. Mango chutney was sourced to accompany it (thank you!). We had already seen and inspected the puddings and there were at least a dozen cake-type slices to choose from, and sizeable portions at about £2. Also banana splits, and meringue delights.

We chose one chocolate brownie and one maple and pecan slice (both very tasty and big enough), and coffee. When I mentioned I took mine black she returned to the coffee pot and filled me up to the top! I do sometimes feel a bit cheated by the three-quarters-of-acup effect that you get with black coffee and this was literally the first time anyone has ever done that. Thanks very much Lara.

The service here is bright, quick and cheerful, the place is clean and tidy and the loos are very spacious. Access to all areas is good for the disabled. I really like this place and will return to do some serious shopping in the delicatessen part of the shop, then try another one of those cake slices.

Northern Ballet invites you to the ball

Northern Ballet, a firm favourite with Norfolk audiences, will bring the Nor ultima rags to riches fairytale to the Norwich Theatre Royal stage ultimate this October with a magical new production of Cinderella by awardwinning choreographer David Nixon OBE.

The colourful tapestry of Russia will lend new magic and wonder to this very traditional story. Rather than a fairy godmother, a magician is one of the central protagonists, and in preparation for the production Northern Ballet’s dancers have learned magic and circus skills. Northern Ballet commissioned Philip Feeney to write a new score which will be played live by the Northern Ballet Sinfonia at all performances. Tim Mitchell is creating the lighting and Julie Anderson assists David Nixon in costume design. Cinderella is David Nixon’s 15th new full-length production for Northern Ballet where he has been Artistic Director since 2001.

David Nixon has placed some universal themes at the heart of his ballet, showing the contrast between ween the lives of those who experience freedom, warmth and love, and those who experience loneliness, depicting both the many faces of love, the darkness of grief and the transforming power of generosity. David explains: “My Cinderella strays far from the pantomime interpretation. Amidst all the action, magic and fun lies the storyy of a real woman and man who must travel their separate roads to ultimate happiness even though that journey is fraught with challenge. Cinderella is ultimately

Art in the Park This summer, Diss is getting arty! We spoke to Issy Coe, who is part of Waveney Springs Art Collective, to find out more.

aveney Springs Art Collective was formed in 2008 so that artists and makers living and working within approximately a 15 mile radius of Diss could come together to share ideas, give workshops and exhibit as a group. Members of the collective live and work on both sides of the upper Waveney River, hence the name.

“We would love members of the public to join in”, says Issy. “Whether you are a professional or amateur artist, or have never painted before, all are welcome so please come and join us for a fun day! Waveney Springs members will be on hand to help and advise and there may be a workshop or two taking place as well.”

In April the group had an exhibition of work at The Corn Hall Gallery in Diss and this year saw the seventh open studios event taking place over the spring bank holiday at the end of May and the following weekend.

Clean Bandit UEA – 20th October Having just scored a UK number one single with the anthemic ‘Rather Be’, Clean Bandit are the band of the moment. Following appearances on Jools Holland and huge festivals all over Europe, the Cambridge four-piece have swiftly put themselves at the forefront of the British music scene with their debut album New Eyes, using electronic music with dance and even classical elements. Their tongue in cheek humour caused many to see them as a ‘joke band’, but their classical approach to pop music soon caught on, as they made a name for themselves as one of the most unique live acts in the UK today.

Balance and Composure Epic Studios – 15th October American punk five-piece Balance and Composure are about to embark on their biggest UK tour to date. Having toured with the likes of La Dispute and Touche Amore, the band’s name has become synonymous in the rebirth of the post-hardcore genre, giving it a more progressive and emotional layer. With a mix of an abrasive delivery similar to Nirvana, progressive melodies and a severe depth with singer Jon Simmons’ lyricism, you can expect an extremely intense performance.

Manchester Orchestra Waterfront – 28th September No, not an actual orchestra (and not even from Manchester...), Manchester Orchestra are the complete opposite. Touring their new album Cope, the Atlanta based alternative rock band are the American equivalent of Biﬀy Clyro, somehow managing to make weird music mainstream.

The band (with an impressive array of beards) range from melodic soft rock with atmospheric touches not far away from Arcade Fire to a relentlessly aggressive delivery that you’d expect to come out of a metal band. Having toured the world multiple times, their onstage performance has been honed to acute perfection.

Legends of the folk music circuit, the popular duo of Steve Knightly and Phil Beer once again bring Miranda Sykes along for an evening of traditional English folk music. Having previously headlined prestigious venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, the group are treating their fans to not one, but two full sets in Norwich. Collecting Antique Silver

or many hundreds of years silver has been avidly sought after for its beauty, value and practicality. Traditionally silver was seen as a sign of wealth within families and religious establishments, with the added advantage that it could be melted down and used as bullion if the need arose.

Steer clear of worn, dented, repaired pieces – always go for quality. Finally price should be considered – a good clean, honest, unusual and interesting piece will always command a higher price. Expect to pay a premium too for pieces by a particularly sought-after silversmith and pieces assayed in Scotland and Ireland.

The English hallmarking system began in 1300. Only pieces containing at least 92.5% silver to 7.5% copper could be termed sterling and receive the official mark. Assay offices were established across the country, but only 5 are still in operation today: London, Birmingham, Dublin, Edinburgh and Sheffield. I will go into more detail about hallmarking in the next issue. When you purchase a modern piece of silver today you are mostly paying for the design and workmanship, whereas historically the majority of the cost was down to the weight. Georgian pieces (1714-1811) were plain in design whilst in the Victorian period (1837-1901) the fashion was for elaborate chasing and decorative, heavy embossing. Consequently family pieces were often sent back to the silversmith to be reworked rather than sold and new purchased. Today these ‘altered’ pieces are given a wide berth by the fastidious collectors who don’t consider them as ‘original’. If you are considering collecting silver then buy the very best you can aﬀord. An altered piece will always have a lower value should you decide in the future to sell or pass on your collection. Many readers will be familiar with on-site auctions. If you are a novice I would think very carefully before purchasing this way. My advice would always be to try and handle the piece you are interested in. Pick it up, feel the weight and the gauge (thickness). Look carefully for any damage, repairs or alterations. Talk to the seller – do they have any history on the piece? Who is the maker? Don’t be afraid to ask questions. If you are unfamiliar with the hallmarking system ask the seller to date the item for you. A reputable seller will be happy to share their knowledge.

ingham is one of my favourite small market towns in Norfolk. Nestled between Watton and Norwich, it boasts a great butcher, post office, gift shops, cafes and even a Boots! But most importantly it’s home to one of my favourite brand of shoes, Unisa. With a factory outlet right on the edge of town it manages to lure me at least a couple of times a year when they change their seasonal range! Not only is the prospect of a new pair of shoes reward enough, we also love to visit the central pub and hotel, The White Hart.

The particular highlights were the twice baked cheese soufflé, the pan fried trout with samphire, and to finish off, a rich chocolate fondant with pistachio ice cream and chocolate Cointreau sauce. The children’s menu is pretty standard for a pub with the usual offerings of pasta, burger and fries, sausage and mash etc, but I was told the chef would try and accommodate more mature tastes by offering half portions from the main menu. With an extensive wine list for even the fussiest of tastes, and locally produced beers, there is something to satisfy all palates.The owners positively welcome families and the whole ambiance is very chilled out and relaxed. I can’t wait until the winter boots come in at Unisa so I have a great excuse to visit the White Hart again!

The White Hart was taken over in 2011 by Kiwi Inns, which is a group of pubs based in Norfolk. After a seriously impressive refurbishment the pub has been restored to a flourishing eatery in the heart of the town. Their food is fresh, contemporary, locally produced and above all else, delicious. At lunchtime you can eat from a choice oﬀ the main menu or there is also a set menu for £12.95 for two courses, and on Sundays the set menu is £16.95 for two courses. We ended up having 3 courses each, and every single one delivered in its promise of quality and flavour.

Lily Poisoning in Cats

his issue, Tilly Morgan from The Old Golfhouse Veterinary Group warns cat owners about the dangers of having lilies in your home.

Sadly, many cats with lily poisoning will die despite our very best effort, although the chances improve slightly if supportive treatment (including intravenous fluid therapy) is commenced within 6 hours of exposure.

Having seen a recent case of lily poisoning, The Old Golfhouse Veterinary Group would like to raise awareness of the risks that come with having this beautiful flower in your home. All cat owners need to be aware that having these flowers in your home can actually prove fatal for cats.

If you suspect your cat may have been exposed to lilies please seek veterinary advice immediately.

Contrary to popular belief, any part of the plant is poisonous if consumed. Even if a cat rubs against the lily they can be poisoned, by licking off the pollen later or inhaling it.

By far the best way of protecting your cat from this fatal disease is to prevent them coming into contact with lilies in the first place. For more information, contact The Old Golfhouse Veterinary Group on 01953 451100.

The first signs of lily poisoning occur thirty minutes to two hours after ingestion. Symptoms include vomiting, depression and loss of appetite. Vomiting usually subsides a few hours after exposure however this does not necessarily mean that your cat is making a recovery. As the toxins start to affect the kidneys, depression, excessive thirst and lethargy will occur. Acute renal failure usually occurs 1-3 days after ingestion, and death will follow within 5 days. Prompt medical treatment is absolutely vital if you suspect your cat has been poisoned, but even with immediate veterinary attention, there is no guarantee that your cat will survive.

s it time for a change of décor? Are your walls in need of freshening up? Do you like soft tones that blend in with your surroundings to create a space that’s calm and tranquil, or bright contrasting colours and bold textures for a real statement of vibrancy? Either can bring your outdoor room to life!

The use of climbers is not just restricted to boundaries and hiding eyesores, they look fantastic over arches, pergolas and obelisks too.

Climbing plants oﬀer an easy solution to clothing unsightly walls, fences and ugly objects (such as oil tanks and old sheds), with choices suitable for any situation.

Both will cover a large area, happily scrambling up into trees if left to their own devices, but be sure to give C. armandii a very sheltered and well-lit position in order for it to thrive.

Speed of growth can be impressive, Fallopia baldschuanica (Mile-a-minute or Russian vine) tops the running order, covering virtually anything with ease; it’s the climbing equivalent of Leylandii, but with semievergreen leaves and panicles of cream flowers in late summer it has its place. Another ‘fast-growing’ family is Parthenocissus (Virginia creepers and self-clinging Boston ivy) oﬀering good coverage and wonderful autumn leaf colours. A new variety, Fenway Park, has bright yellow foliage which makes it a great foil for other garden plants. Clematis

If your site is cool and shady, climbing hydrangeas will perform incredibly well, the deciduous H. petiolaris and evergreen H. seemannii both have white lace-cap flowers, and they support themselves (come on you hydrangeas!) by means of aerial roots, as do Hedera (ivy). Choose a cream or gold variegated ivy to brighten up a dull spot, and if you’re changing the carpet as well as decorating the walls then ivies also make colourful weed-suppressing ground cover (underplant with spring bulbs for added eﬀect).

Use fragrant types near seating areas, most honeysuckles, jasmines and wisteria give good scent, as will Trachelospermum jasminoides and some clematis, such as the rampant C. montana Elizabeth, and evergreen C. armandii which smells lightly of vanilla.

A sense of privacy is an issue for many people, so why not create a living screen? Clematis are simple to grow; plant large-flowered hybrids a little deep, train new growth almost horizontally, snaking the stems from side to side or spiralling around the support to encourage more shoots and flowers (this method of training can be used on many climbers and will ease the problem of too much top growth and nothing beneath), then maintain a frame–work by clipping back after flowering to keep plants tidy. Increasing the height of your boundary fence by the addition of trellis and climbers is one option when privacy is a concern, or you might instead wish to consider putting up a free-standing structuree ccloser loser to the house. A 5ft high screen near to the patio, smothered with suitably chosen climbers, can gi give ve you more privacy than a large tree at the end of the garden, and in the process you’ve created a room oom within a room, your very own outdoor sanctuary!

August and September are the best time of the year to harvest fruit. The hedgerows are teeming with delicious wild fruits like blackberries and sloes whilst apples, pears and plums will be ripening in the orchards. KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR HERBS In hot weather, herbs like parsley, basil and rocket are prone to bolting – i.e. flowering prematurely before you’ve had time to use them. Cut back your herbs to promote growth and prevent this from happening. Now is the best time for drying your herbs, particularly oregano and marjoram. Cut the stems, tie with string and hang upside down in the airing cupboard for about a week. Then store in an airtight container ready to use in those warming winter stews. Why not try doing the same with some strongly scented flowers like lavender?

Petrol will go oﬀ, so at the end of the season, drain oﬀ your petrol and refresh at the beginning of the next season. DON’T use two-stroke petrol! It has oil in it which can damage the mower. 10. If your mower doesn’t sound right, get it checked out. It could save you lots of money in the long run!

As the inverter box creates alternating current, this is taken to the appliances in the house that are using it. The electricity goes directly from the inverter box to your appliance as you’re using it. Anything you don’t use goes back to the national grid to be used by someone else. Any energy that isn’t used by you will create an income for you, using a tariff system to sell it to the national grid. If you’re not connected to the grid, electricity can be stored, usually in large batteries.

Nurture by Nature Forest School was first conceived by Hannah four years ago. After months of planning, the non-profit Community Interest Company became a reality last year when she teamed up with Lee Storer, MD and owner of Anglian Demolition, who sponsored the development of the learning centre at the enchanting Attleborough Wood.

The courses are designed to create a therapeutic environment that embraces self-discipline and selfmotivation through a foundational study of natural history, the wilderness and independent living skills. The Great War and the Home Front

In the last two issues I have written about the men of our region who went to war and sadly did not return. Apart from the devastating effect this loss had on their families and friends, the First World War had an enormous impact on the lives of everyone in Norfolk and Suffolk. For those families in rural towns and villages in which agriculture was the main source of income, life did not just carry on as normal.

he outbreak of the war in August 1914 did not immediately affect agricultural communities as that year’s harvest had already been brought in by the time the young men started to sign up at local recruiting offices. However, by 1915 the national agricultural workforce had dropped by 7% and a poor harvest that year meant that County War Agricultural Committees were created in an attempt to improve the situation. One way in which they tried to boost the local workforce was encouraging women to leave their household duties and to work in the fields instead.

However, it is clear that work by women on the agricultural tasks previously undertaken by the men of the community was not sufficient. County Education Committees in the region therefore brought in a system of school exemption certificates which were issued to farmers who could give work to boys over twelve years of age (the normal school leaving age at the time was 14). Later on provision was also made for girls to be exempt from school if they were needed at home to look after their younger siblings while their mothers worked.

5th May 1916 – There are 15 children absent through sickness and agricultural employment 30th June 1916 – Many children are frequently absent as the mothers are working on the land and the elder children are looking after the younger ones 15th June 1917 – The Attendance Officer visited [and] took the names of 7 boys employed in Agriculture 1st March 1918 – The attendance for the year has been only 81% due to abnormal sickness and to a large number of boys on Agricultural Employment 22nd March 1918 – There are now 9 boys temporarily released for Agriculture, and as many more are casually employed, the attendance and progress of these boys are greatly hampered. County initiatives such as these were supplemented by the national Women’s Land Army which organised the employment of around 20,000 women across the country in all sorts of land-related jobs. However, it is clear that the Great War not only had an eﬀect on the generation of men who fought for their country. The impact on their families left behind was also tremendous, not least on the countless boys and girls who missed out on vital, basic education in order to keep the economy of their agricultural communities afloat. everend Briant Smith’s visit to the Norfolk Broads when he was 13 inspired a longlasting love affair with the area. Now, more than 50 years later, the former biologist, who has retired from the Methodist church circuit is putting his unique stamp on the magical waterways that have become his‘parish’.

The part-time chaplain for the Broads, who lives on the Norfolk Suﬀolk border, ventured into new waters more than five years ago with a job that has fostered his love for nature, art and spirituality. The man who was also a biology teacher for 25 years has been busy developing educational resources for school visits as well as running walks, courses and sailings on a unique trading wherry while being Vice President for Broads Tourism. “A lot of what I do is about gently pushing doors and seeing what happens,” he explains as he builds relationships with tourists and those that work in the area, particularly businessmen. “There is a great deal to oﬀer in terms of spiritual heritage,” says the nature lover, who is happy amongst the waterways and varied wildlife and village and urban communities. “The culture and history, with ancient religious buildings and other historic icons, continue to help individuals and groups with their ongoing personal development. “An increasing number of people are searching for spiritual meaning in their lives and part of their search involves a deeper appreciation of the natural world for spiritual exploration, growth and development,” says Briant, whose findings are included in the five-year blueprint for the Broads’ sustainable tourism.

The subject is close to his heart after a dramatic awareness of our Creator through the wonders of creation. “I had been at a boarding school from the age of 11, where matins and evensong were compulsory, but they did not help my spirituality. A few years after leaving, I was working on a farm in the Isle of Wight. As I looked out towards the sea and the surf and the white cliﬀs, I had to turn oﬀ the tractor as the view was so spectacular and if I had not prayed, I would have wept.” His course and resources for ‘seekers and searchers’ visiting the Broads allow them to leave the material world and wallow in the beauty through recreation. “It is about stopping, looking and immersing yourself in the moment and perhaps writing, taking a photograph or drawing and thinking, where is God in all this?” says Briant. His ‘Broadside’ series of photographs and meditations encourage further reflection while various ‘Pilgrim’ trails are available through the chaplaincy which was appointed by the East Anglia District of the Methodist Church. What does your surname say about you? When we start to look at our family history, one of the first things we look for is the meaning of the name. This issue Glynn Burrows from Norfolk Tours explains what your surname says about your ancestors.

Surnames which are common in Norfolk: Rallison, Frary, Benefer, Cason, Gurney, Grimmer, Filby, Hipkin, Howling, Foulger, Gotts, Whalebelly In fact, if you are a Benefer, I can guarantee that your ancestors came from King’s Lynn. My great grandmother was a Benefer and I have not yet found any Benefer who isn’t related to me. So, how do we find where our family name originated from? Obviously, if it is a name like Smith or Jones, it will be very difficult but if you have an unusual name, it is always worth putting the name in an early census search on a family history index site and see what comes up. If 99% of the hits are from one area, it could be a good place to start! If I put Rallison or Benefer into a search of the 1851 census index, the only hits are people born in Norfolk.

Thetford Voices Thetford Music Project provides exciting opportunities for young people aged 6-16 to get involved in music. This could mean having after-school lessons, playing as part of a band or performing in a concert.

hetford Voices is the vocal part of the Thetford Music Project. They deliver in-school workshops and promote singing collaborations between schools across the town, growing with the generous support of local and national funders. This summer, young singers from across Norfolk and Suﬀolk are warmly welcomed to take part in a popular event in Thetford. Oversubscribed in 2013, Thetford Voices is back this summer with even more going on during its two days of singing workshops on Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th August. For the main programme for 6-14 year olds, the group will be discovering more songs of stage and story. Annie and Cats are two of the musicals the group will be drawing on, with Billy Elliott and Matilda among others making an appearance. As ever, songs are chosen to suit the range of age

and experience of those taking part, with big choruses, comedy numbers, semi-staging and partsinging building up to another of the exhilarating concerts for parents and friends which happen at the end of the course.

Council, the D’Oyly Carte Trust and Norfolk County Council’s Arts Project, fees remain low: £7 for the two days of the main course and £2 each for the additional sessions.

Course directors are Christopher Wray (Director of Fulham Children’s Choir) who joins Thetford Voices again straight from directing the children’s choirs at Dartington International Summer School, and local song leader Sarah Skinner. Sarah will also lead one of two additional sessions, a toddlers’ hour from 10.00 - 11.00 on Tuesday August 12th. Later that evening (6.30 - 8.30), Chris heads a youth music theatre session, featuring Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, with singers from 15 year olds to young adults welcome. Ten Years of

The Big Sing

hen this popular event returns to St Mary’s Church in Diss on Sunday 3rd August it will be hard to believe that ten years have passed since it began. Over the space of time its popularity has grown and grown and people come from far and wide to enjoy a lively summer’s evening of singing their favourite hymns in a top ten form chosen in advance. We spoke to Gerry Hosking, organiser and presenter of The Big Sing about what you can expect from this wonderful event. He says: “Because we are celebrating a milestone we will be singing some of those best loved hymns that you have chosen over the last ten years. If you have never attended this event before then you have really missed a good uplifting occasion where we have an organist along with the church choir and the Diss Salvation Army Band to make this evening go with a swing.”

Each year a charity is chosen and the collection is presented during this 70 minute solid hymn singing event. If you arrive by 6pm you can enjoy listening to the band playing a warm up before you start to sing. “All are welcome to come and enjoy themselves,” says Gerry. “People have chosen many great hymns that you don’t often sing in church and on this note please remember you do not have to be a church-going person to attend.” For more information contact Gerry on 01379 641487

Due to the generosity of Norfolk people donating items of good quality furniture over the last year coupled with a fantastic agreement with local removals company, Abel’s, Big C found themselves in the position of having a large amount of furniture in storage which was just too much to sell through their existing shops. As a result, the Furniture Emporium was born. Fressingfield Music Festival

celebrates 10th anniversary Tasmin Little

Tuesday 23 September Tasmin Little, the world-renowned classical violinist, returns to Fressingfield to open the Festival with a performance of works by Beethoven, Arvo Pärt, Kreisler and others. Tasmin will be accompanied by the acclaimed pianist John Lenehan.

Thursday 25 September New to the festival this year, the Choir of Norwich Cathedral’s repertoire will include classic English works by Byrd, Purcell, Parry and Vaughan Williams, amongst others.

Saturday 27 September Baroque ensemble Badinage brings the festival to a buoyant close with performances of Handel’s Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, Bach’s F Major harpsichord concerto, and works by Vivaldi, Albinoni and Telemann .

Concerts commence at 7:30pm (doors 6:45pm). Refreshments are available before concerts and during intervals. Friday 26 September Firmly established at the heart of the British jazz scene since appearing at the opening of Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in 1959, Brian Dee, one of the world’s leading jazz musicians has recorded and appeared with stars such as Bing Crosby, Peggy Lee, Chet Baker and Ben Webster. To celebrate the Festival’s 10th anniversary, Brian will be joined by a selection of friends for what will doubtless be a memorable evening of pure jazz.

5 mistakes women make in the gym Women get curves by building muscle. We show those curves by losing body fat. Simple. So why are we doing everything to make both those things so hard?

Mistake 1: Fear of getting “too big” You will never get too big unless you have a mansized amount of testosterone and you’re eating huge regular meals of protein and carbs. Only would a combination of this give us a chance to get “too big”.

Anything can work for about 6 weeks, then you need to change it and progress it. On the flip side you need to do something routinely enough and intense enough to force physical change, if you flit from one exercise to the next or one workout to the next you are not allowing time to see the eﬀects.

Mistake 5: Fear of food Eating too little will tell your body to go into starvation mode. This means that the body holds on to fat and lets muscle get broken down for fuel – the opposite of what you want to happen. Remember: it’s fat loss we want, not necessarily weight loss. Combine eating healthily with weight training 3 times per week and it will help you maintain muscle and shift fat.

Mistake 2: Doing too many sit-ups Here’s a shocker: everyone has a six-pack; you just have to whittle away enough fat so that it shows. Granted, you may want to build the abdominals so they’re more pronounced, but stop thinking that you need to dedicate half your workout or more to working abs. Spend time doing activities which burn fat instead.

Mistake 4: Workout monogamy or promiscuity

Mistake 3: Doing too much aerobic training Aerobic training for too long burns muscle and leads to skinny fat syndrome. There are far more eﬀective ways to burn fat. Visit to the Denny Centre in Diss

hen I was asked to check out the facilities on offer at the Diss Day Support Club, I was worried that a day centre wouldn’t be the highlight of my week; but I was so wrong! What a caring, happy place this is. There is a leaflet available and I couldn’t hope to better it for sheer information and contact details, but here is a snapshot of what I discovered: The Day Support Club at the Denny Centre, near Diss station, opens twice a week (Tuesday and Friday) from 9.30 to 4 pm, and is a bright spacious place where about 30 older people spend the day doing whatever they like - before and after lunch. There is a wide range of things to do but if you want peace and quiet and a chat you will also be accommodated. There is a television, but it remained off all day; only the genuine laughter and quiet conversations between guests and staff were to be heard. During the morning, several ladies (and gentlemen too) disappeared, only to re-emerge with their hair beautifully tended by the on-site hairdresser. And if you should want your nails done – hands or feet - the staff are ready to oblige with a dazzling array of glorious colour varnishes, some of which were eagerly selected by the ladies (the chaps declined!). There’s Scrabble and dominoes to be played, knitting and crochet, jigsaws, and for the artistically inclined, glass-painting with Amanda who knows all the tricks for getting the best possible result. I was very impressed with the ratio of staff and volunteers to guests, almost one to five. This is lovely as no one is left to struggle. All the members of staff and volunteers remained cheerfully busy throughout; a friendly volunteer brought us coffee during the morning and laid the tables. I was invited to join the

guests fo for lunch so had chosen roast chick chicken fr from the extensive menu of good old English favourites like bangers and mash and lamb casserole. The gentleman sitting next to me was diabetic so this was taken into consideration with an omelette and plenty of veg, after which he tucked into a special diabetes-friendly sponge and custard pud! Lunch costs a very reasonable £5.50. Afterwards there was the option of going outside into the lovely garden area for a chat and a sing-song in the sunshine, or staying inside for a little doze in a comfy chair. The warmth and care I saw at this centre is astonishing and the staff would like as many people (over 55 years of age) as possible to know about it and make use of it. All you have to do is ring 0303 3000 129 and a very nice man will talk you through the options. He can post you a leaflet (which incidentally may be available at your doctor’s surgery) then pass your phone number to the Day Support Club staff who will contact you within two working days. New guests may be offered a trial visit to the centre. They will help you with the transport and possible funding arrangements; all you have to do is let them know that you may be interested. The centre is open on two days but this could be increased according to demand which is great for everyone.

ith the summer holidays coming to an end, it’s that time of year when many of us start planning those minor home improvement jobs and DIY projects that we want sorted before Christmas gets here. Not everyone’s lucky enough to have cash in the bank to pay for that kitchen makeover, revamp of the bathroom or new extension, so picking the right finance is important if you’re looking to keep the costs in check. It’s important to do your homework before signing on the dotted line for a loan or credit card as making the wrong choice can end up costing you a lot more than it ought to.

he C5 is an outstandingly comfy euro-barge. The seats are a treat to sit in and the Citroën’s electronically controlled springing and damping give a ride akin to a hovercraft. The cost-conscious diesel HDi 200 engine on the flagship Exclusive model, on test here, is mated to a refined six-speed automatic transmission. Top speed is 143mph and idle to 62mph comes in 8.3 seconds, but the C5 is contented at 6065mph on the motorway – it never hassles you for more. All the same, muscle is there if you need it and when you do, it kicks in well, leaving others to suck on your twin-tailpipe emissions. With its laminated side windows the French motor is a hushed and pleasant place to see the world whirl by. Sure, there are superior looking sets of executive-class wheels on the market, but with the Citroën’s admirable ride, comfort, and its fuel efficiency (up to 47.9mpg, which is good for an

automatic); its tame appearance can be excused. To boot, if you buy a C5 the chances are it won’t get stolen. The car has a list of security devices as long as your arm, including: an alarm, immobiliser, deadlocks and remote control central locking. To weigh up, the Citroën C5 is a high-quality vehicle in many ways, but little things such as minuscule buttons for the radio and sat-nav –

and less than logically placed kit disappoint (where’s the cup-holder, for instance? Oh yes, hidden inside the centre armrest). With these irritating faux pas it’s hard to rationalize the Exclusive HDi 200 Saloon’s near £30k price-tag. If I were you I’d wait 18 months and get a second-hand one – then you really will be getting a large slice of car for your hard earned wedge. What you need: Ingredients: For the Papillotte 7 oz /200g salmon fillet with skin on (ask fish monger to pin and trim) Lemongrass Kaffir lime leaves Pinch of paprika Small chilli (finely chopped) Bay leaf Basil Chives Sea salt and cracked pepper Olive oil or butter For the Salsa 1 punnet cherry tomatoes (quartered) 1 red onion (finely diced) Splash of cider vinegar 1 tsp caster sugar A good glug of quality pomace olive oil or extra virgin 1 tsp ketchup 2 spring onions (chopped) Fresh coriander, mint, basil & parsley 1 small chilli (deseeded and chopped finely) You need A lit barbecue Greaseproof paper & tin foil

Method 1. Put the greaseproof paper on top of the foil and cut it in a 30cm/12” square 2. Put the salmon fillet on top of the greaseproof paper and drizzle with the olive oil 3. Throw the lemongrass, lime leaves, paprika, chilli, torn basil leaves and chopped chives randomly on top of the salmon and again drizzle some more olive oil 4. Carefully fold the sides of the tin foil and greaseproof to make a bag. Pinch together so the parcel is sealed but leave a few gaps to get that smoky BBQ flavour. 5. Place on the BBQ and cook for about 10-15 minutes whilst the salmon infuses with all the lovely flavours 6. Whilst cooking prepare the salsa (it’s really easy!) Just chop all the ingredients and mix thoroughly. You can add more chilli if you fancy it a little spicier…

Serve with that chilled Pinot (or maybe Chardonnay), relax, eat and enjoy! There you have it: a healthy, tasty BBQ dish done within minutes…
