new high wire visitor attraction, an upgraded restaurant and a new building are on offer to visitors of Roarr! Dinosaur Adventure this summer following a £2 million investment. This year, the family-owned theme park in Lenwade near Norwich launches its new Predator High Rop pes attractio on

At 35 metres long, Predator High Ropes is the longest in Europe with two levels of difficulty and is part of the new round of investment to the popular dinosaur themed family park, which this year won Best Large Visitor Attraction in the 2018 EDP & EADT Norfolk and Suffolk Tourism Awards. Owned by the Goymour family since 2006, Roarr! Dinosaur Adventure, which rebranded

in 2018 from Dinosaur Adventure, attracts over 300,000 visitors a year and has seen major growth since 2011. “This latest round of investment means that the park will appeal to older children and crucially the teenage market, which strengthens our family feel. We have also invested heavily in the infrastructure as well as a significant £900,000 upgrade to The Explorers restaurant,” said Adam Goymour, Park Manager. The 85-acre park, which is open all year round except Christmas Day and d Boxing Day offers true family fun adventure of a Jurassic nature, including animatronic dinosaurs in natural settings, Dippy’s Splash Zone and Dinomite – Norfolk’s largest indoor play area. “The park is family owned and managed and we are hugely proud of what we offer to families. We believe that our approach of continually investing in our offering, means that we are always improving our visitor experience and giving families a reason to keep coming back to us,” said Adam. A PLASTIC-FREE FUTURE FOR FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS A Norfolk funeral director is reducing the amount of plastic used in floral arrangements by offering fully biodegradable memorial wreaths and tributes as an option. Rosedale Funeral Home has teamed up with local florist and grower Gabriel’s Garden to provide the service after seeing all the media coverage about plastic reduction and thinking about what they could do to contribute. Director Anne Beckett-Allen said: “We are committed to reducing the amount of plastic and non-recyclable materials we use generally as a company. I think many people will be surprised at just how many floral arrangements can’t be composted so we believe that offering this option to our clients is a real positive step for the environment.”

The campaign to have a Harleston Hare over the summer has been successful and she was unveiled, sitting on a plinth outside St John’s Church, on 24 June to mark the official start of the GoGoHares Trail around Norfolk. Stephen, who has recently been appointed to the South East Area Council of Arts Council England, will use his expertise and knowledge of local issues to help support future strategies. NORFOLK’S HERITAGE OPEN DAYS FESTIVAL It’s a double weekend!

ans of Heritage Open Days (HODs) are in for a treat this September. Festival organisers have announced that for the first time in HODs history the much-loved annual event will run across two weekends this year instead of one. The all-important dates for your diaries are 6-9 and 13-16 September. So get ready for eight busy days of tours, talks, walks, open days, exhibitions, performances and open gardens. HODs is a chance to celebrate our local community, meet new people, share stories and learn more about where we live. Visitors can explore, be curious and enjoy a sneaky peek inside places that aren’t always open to the public… and what’s more it’s all free! This September, hundreds of participating Norfolk venues will throw open their doors to reveal their hidden heritage and history including; a twilight tower tour at St John’s Cathedral in Norwich, a tour of Lazar House – a 900 year old former leper hospital, a behind-the-scenes look around Norwich Theatre Royal, an open day at Gressenhall Farm & Workhouse, family activities at Diss Corn Hall, storytelling at Caistor Roman Town, and a step back

in time at the Wymondham Vintage Day. With almost 300 free events on offer, there is something for all ages and all interests. There are plenty of family friendly events and look out for some special themed events to celebrate local extraordinary women. Many of the festival events are drop-in but must be pre-booked. henever we venture into Suffolk, we fall foul of the tiny writing on road signs and generally have a certain amount of unplanned sight-seeing en route to our venue. Last year I told you about the Marsh Larder near Harleston; this café is very similar, but this one opens all week, so put on your cowboy shirts and… ’Yee-hah! Let’s go see the horses!’ Throughout our visit – seated outside in the sunshine – we were treated to the sight of beautiful horses being walked past us. All the café staff were attentive and happy and the service was paced really well. We ordered coffees; my espresso was large and strong, and my friend Alice’s filter coffee just right. Both coffees came with a tiny exquisite shortbread biscuit that simply melted. At first the menu appeared a bit rustic, but it was more a case of ‘hearty and home-cooked’ – none of your vast white plates covered with a scattering of pomegranate seeds here! I opted for an asparagus and chicken tart with mushroom – much like a quiche actually, with excellent pastry. It was accompanied by a pot of coleslaw, new potatoes and salad. Alice chose a mushroom and stilton omelette with crisp, tasty sweet potato fries. We didn’t leave a crumb! No room for pudding? Not likely! There was a hot pudding available – a crumble – but we had already spotted the cakes, all generously sized, so we ordered a slice of coffee and walnut, and a brownie with ice cream for me. Bliss! Alice’s coffee and walnut disappeared before I could assess it, but was declared ‘wonderful’. We both liked this place, it was a happy and efficiently busy café. Sitting outside in good weather is always a bonus but the inside looked as if it would be a warm welcoming place for evening use. Tractor seat stools and horsey paraphernalia decked the walls, and there is a set of horns on the wall over the counter which I would have hung my hat on – had I got one.

The café isn’t licensed but you are more than welcome to take your own bottle – no corkage charges. It is also disabled friendly, with special parking and a spacious disabled The Good, The Bad loo. and The I don’t know one end of a horse from the other, except to say that one end bites, the other kicks, and both ends smell, but if you are horse-mad do come here – it’s lovely.

rom the dust and drama of the fall of Saigon to the peace and tranquillity of a Norfolk village – Ashley Gilmour is set to experience both when he plays Chris in Cameron Mackintosh’s epic production of Miss Saigon this summer. It has to be one of the most exciting roles in musical theatre playing Chris, the American soldier whose life changes forever on a night out in Saigon’s sordid and sleazy Dreamland bar. Ashley, who will play the challenging role when the show comes to Norwich Theatre Royal from 15 August to 15 September, is relishing the opportunity for many reasons. One is the chance to perform on home turf. Born and brought up in Cambridgeshire, his parents moved to Feltwell three years ago and he is hoping they will come along to see the show with his six brothers. As an added bonus, he gets to stay with his mum and dad and rediscover village life. “We visit all these fantastic cities around the UK while we are touring, but it is nice to go home. Feltwell is charming and everyone says hello when they walk down the street,” said Ashley. It is certainly a far cry from the dust and desperation of the musical’s setting.

LIME, POPPY SEED & ELDERFLOWER SYRUP CAKE Summer calls for straightforward cakes that can be taken on a country picnic or even in a plastic container to the beach. This cake fits the bill: it’s easy to make, has no icing to melt, will put up with life in a box (so it’s a popular takeaway cake from Pennoyer’s café) and is tangy and moist. Serves 9 - 12

100ml milk 4 tablespoons poppy seeds 250g caster sugar 4 limes 4 eggs 1 tablespoon elderflower cordial 230g soured cream

5. Spoon the mix into the tin, smooth with a knife and bake in the middle of the oven for about 60 minutes until golden and springy to the touch, and a skewer comes out clean. 6. Meanwhile, make the syrup. Put the water, lime juice, sugar and cordial in a pan, and stir over a low heat until the sugar dissolves. Simmer gently for 10 minutes without stirring. Turn off the heat and add the strips of lime zest. 7. Leave the cake to rest for 5 minutes, then turn out onto a cooling rack set over a tray or plate. Spike all over with the skewer and slowly pour the hot syrup over the cake. Drain the excess in the tray and pour again over the top, then leave to cool. You can save any remaining syrup for dipping! 8. Cut into 9 or 12 squares to serve. Keeps up to five days in a box.

Dragon Boat Festival

Local and national charities will receive a boost from the Dragon Boat Festival taking place this August.

he eagerly anticipated East Anglian Dragon Boat Festival will take place on 11 August at Oulton Broad near Lowestoft and it’s a great opportunity for teams from local companies to have fun and raise money for charity. Although there can only be one winner in the dragon boat races, a number of charities will also be winners this year. The festival, sponsored by Warner Leisure Hotels, is an open event where entrants can raise money for their choice of charity. Amongst the charities set to benefit are Nelson’s Journey, QEH King’s Lynn Breast Care Unit, EACH Nook Appeal, The Big C, Princes Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support with many more great causes expected to be nominated before entries close on 1 August. Associated British Ports (ABP) will be entering two teams made up of staff members from the Lowestoft, Kings Lynn and Ipswich ports. Their captain, Lucia Firman said: “The dragon boat race is a great way to get people from the various different ABP ports together, have fun and raise money for charity at the same time.”

Keep an eye on what’s in season and you’ll get the most out of all the fresh local produce that Norfolk and Suffolk have to offer. VEGETABLES n Broad beans are still in season – try them in a risotto with some freshly grated parmesan. n Aubergines are fun to grow if you have a greenhouse and absolutely delicious cooked in a tomato sauce with mozzarella and basil. n Beetroot – Try buying some of the heritage varieties from your local farm shop. Delicious grated raw in a coleslaw.

n Strawberries – How about making your own strawberry gin… n Gooseberries are unexpectedly delicious with greengages and nectarines in a pie! n Early pears will start to arrive at your farm shop from now on. If you see the tiny Robin Pears around, give them a try – a really old fashioned treat.

n Courgettes – If you’re growing them at home, keep picking as soon as they start to fruit or you’ll have marrows overnight.

n Halibut – This wonderful meaty fish is definitely worth trying and goes well with chorizo, broad beans and asparagus.

n Radish is great with fish dishes and lovely when paired with fennel.

n Mackerel – Mix a cooked and skinned mackerel fillet with cream cheese, dill and tabasco and spread on some sourdough toast, then drizzle with some tapenade.

n Fennel gives a lovely flavour to coleslaw or green salads and is great roasted or stuffed into bell peppers. n Globe artichokes are an unusual treat but worth all the effort.

How about taking the children on a bug hunt in the garden? Firstly, ﬁnd a sma plastic box (cream cheese small boxees are the best because they havee clear plastic lids) and line it wiith some soil and stones.

Search for bugs in damp, shady areas and teach children to pick them up carefully using a piece of card. Once they’re in the box, children could use a magnifying glass to examine the bugs more closely… What colour are they? How many legs do they have? How do they protect themselves? They could even draw their bugs. Just don’t forget to put them back where they came from!

GARDEN TREASURE HUNT This activity is a great way to get young children looking more closely at the garden – and if they have friends round you can turn it into a competition too! All you need is a list of things for them to look for in the garden. You could ask them to look for diﬀerent colours – can they ﬁnd an example of all the colours of the rainbow?

Or how about different shapes – can they find a square, rectangle, triangle, circle a star or a spiral? Or improve their vocabulary by asking them for find things which are fragrant, prickly, smooth, ugly, beautiful, hot or cold. Print out a copy of the list for each team – and off they go! This activity works well in a park too.

HARVEST TIME AT THE KITCHEN GARDEN This is a time of abundance, so keep harvesting your fruit and vegetables. Children will really enjoy this task – especially if it results in a delicious snack. Fruits like raspberries, blackberries, tayberries, early apples and pears should be ready to harvest – if they come oﬀ the tree easily then you know that they are ripe. Going fruit-picking is a lovely way to get children out-and-about and to show them that food doesn’t need to come from the supermarket! August is the last month to sow salads outside, so make the most of it with some rocket, lettuce and sorrel. Growing lettuce is a great place for children to start – it’s simple to sow and they’ll get a sense of satisfaction when they see the ﬁrst shoots within a couple of weeks.

BECOME A SEED HUNTER Collecting seeds is a worthwhile activity for children and adults alike – all you’ll need is some small envelopes. Go around the garden and tell children to look out for plants where the flowers have fallen off and the seed heads are growing. If they are fat and brown, they should be ripe and ready for collection – if not, leave them for a little longer. Aim to collect seeds from annuals like poppies, cornflowers and nasturtiums. Remember to label each envelope and if your children enjoy drawing, they can decorate with a picture of the plant too. Leave the seeds to dry out and keep them safe until planting time in the spring.

Dogs for Good trains dogs to help children and adults with all sorts of challenges, including autism, physical disabilities, special educational needs and dementia. BUMPER HOLIDAY fun for youngsters

hether it’s handling a snake, learning circus skills or trying their hand at African drumming, youngsters can enjoy a unique, bumper experience at Hub Community Project in Wymondham. The Project at Ayton Road provides fun in the school holidays (FISH) with afternoon activities for up to 60 children. Youngsters aged 5-11 are invited to attend weekly events during the school holidays. The sessions are run by a team of volunteers including experienced children’s worker, Elisabeth Louis, and include lunch followed by a host of fun workshops.

“A hot lunch is always available and the meals are freshly prepared in our kitchens,” says Elisabeth. During the last 18 months, since the sessions began, there have been visits from a variety of specialist companies. One came with snakes and creepy crawlies for the children to handle, another provided puppet making materials and instruction. Others have organised science, circus, drumming and animation workshops. Various schools in Wymondham and the surrounding area send FISH invites to parents of children who they feel would benefit from the activities. Sessions will be held every Wednesday in August from 12.45-2.15pm and parents and younger siblings are welcome to join in. Hub Community Project is a charity whose initiatives have snowballed since it began eight years ago. It runs regular and varied activities to help strengthen the local community, including outings and imaginative activities for carers (‘Cup of Caring’) and those who feel lonely and isolated (‘Meeting Point’). ost of the ‘magic moments’ in my life have been provided by children, with their mixture of innocence and naughtiness. It’s surprising how true the saying out of the mouths of children is… It was a bitterly cold winter’s day and the early snow had been replaced by a biting north easterly wind and clear skies. It was freezing hard. As the fiery red sun was sinking fast in the western sky, my son and I were driving home to our house in the village. We turned off the main highway and immediately I sensed how very slippery it was. The morning’s precipitation had frozen onto the road and the verges were already white with frost. “Careful father”, said Matthew. I gently pussy-footed the car along the treacherous road, until we came to a sharp bend. Tyre marks could clearly be seen across the verge leading towards the ditch. “It looks as though someone’s gone off the road,” said Matthew. “We’d better stop and have a look.” As we carefully came to a halt and turned on the hazard lights, a car roof could clearly be seen. The biting cold wind tried its best to pull the door out of my son’s hands, as he jumped out and crunched his way across the verge. “There’s people in here”, he shouted. I zipped up my jacket, wound my scarf round my neck and followed his steps across the verge. Two very frightened young women and two children were in the car, unhurt, but in a state of shock. As we approached the window came down. “We can’t open the doors as we’re jammed

in by the ditch,” the driver called out, her voice trembling with emotion. “You’ll have to come out of the windows,” I called back. “Pass the children out first.” The first one out was a little girl, Emma, about five or six years old, obviously unfazed by the accident and a right little madam. I can see her now, tiny and self-confident in her pink anorak and bright red wellies, her bobble hat pulled down tightly down over her golden curls. Matthew carried her out of the car and put her down on the verge, where she imperiously stamped her foot and, with her hands on her hips, said in a very loud voice to be sure everyone could hear: “I knew this would happen, I just knew this would happen!” David Clark

hafts of light streamed through the stained glass windows of the cloisters, casting patches of iridescent colour onto the old slate flagstones. She stood silhouetted for a moment against the early morning light, as motionless as the statues that graced the hallowed walls. Not even a bird stirred the whisper of her reverie, until she sighed, turned and sat down, her book open at her lap. In the courtyard garden a gardener appeared, his bronzed muscles labouring under a weight of soil which he was about to deposit in the beds, still host to the last of the summer’s flowers. He put up his forearm to shield himself from the dazzling light and to wipe his

brow which was wet with the efforts of his labours.

He paused. There was something familiar about the form he saw sitting quietly a few yards from him. Tentatively he moved forward, his heart beating and his adrenaline rushing in anticipation. “It is you, mia cara,” he said.

Giovanna’s coif had slipped and a strand of golden hair was struggling to free itself of her habit. “You must go, Giorgio, there can be no future for us. I fear you will be punished!”

Giovanna gave a start, her heart fluttering and the book she was reading dropping to the floor as she met the eyes of the man in front of her. Her hands fumbled uselessly as he came towards her, picking up her book. Their fingers touched and a frisson of sensation, like an electrical current, coursed through their bodies. “You never came for me,” she accused. “I waited and waited but still no word from you.” Her skin, which had always been pale, had turned a whiter shade as she trembled with emotion. She shrank as he came nearer. “I came but your father sent me away, bellissima. And now I find you here.” Upstairs, in the bell tower, Mother Superior chanced to glance below and saw the drama that was being enacted in the cloisters. Briefly crossing herself, she gathered her skirts and swept down the stone

Mother Superior crossed herself again as she approached, her wrinkled, old face, wise as the years that had passed in her life, twitching in anger as she confronted the pair. “You must remember your vows, sister!” she hissed. “It is time for matins. Come with me at once!” Powerless, with a last lingering look at Giorgio, Giovanna obeyed, unable to do otherwise than comply. “You will no longer see that man,” said the older nun. “His contract will be terminated forthwith.” Giorgio could only watch helplessly as the two sisters disappeared from sight. The cloisters, witness to many dramas that had preceded this one, descended once again into silence; the light from the windows at either end casting colour onto a floor which had borne the feet of hapless lovers for centuries, whilst the bells chimed for matins within the sacred walls. © Jo Carr Attleborough Writers’ Group

ature is amazing, take the chameleon, having the ability to change the colour of its skin in order to stand out and be noticed if it so desires, or to blend in and magically disappear into its surroundings in order to creep up on prey or to stop other predators from finding it, a really useful feature in life’s daily struggle.

Most of us have something to hide, a scruffy old shed, an ugly oil tank, a rickety fence, bikes, abandoned toys, barbeque, wood piles, compost bins and general ‘it’ll come in useful one day’ outside stuff.

The view of oil tanks, bins and piles of ‘stuff’ can be interrupted by planting a line of shrubs (mixed or of the same variety) to form a short hedge, this could either be in a straight line or curving around the offending item, clip out the top and sides for a formal look or loosely trim for a more naturalistic style. If space is restricted use posts with rails covered with netting to give support for evergreen climbers.

Like the chameleon you can either choose to make a feature of the item, or disguise it to help it blend into the surroundings. For example, you could paint the shed in bright colours and turn it into a desirable-looking beach hut (even if it’s full of junk on the inside), surround it with pebbles and a few rocks and cobbles, add a bit of driftwood, then plant some maritime perennials such as eryngium (sea holly), limonium (sea lavender), crambe maritima (sea kale), and cushion-forming armeria (sea pink, or thrift). If you make space for a couple of deckchairs you’ll have your own beach-side retreat for a fraction of the cost of a real one, without the risk of watching it float away on a high tide! The other option is to paint it in a dark colour to reduce its visual impact,

Of course you may not wish to hide an object but be hidden away yourself, try installing a living screen or small-holed privacy trellis to one or two sides of a patio area, and at 5 or 6 foot high it’s the equivalent of a large tree at the end of your garden shielding you from being overlooked, so you can relax, camouflaged in your own surroundings.

History of the WAVENEY The River Waveney Trust explain more about the source and the course of the river

he source of the River Waveney is a ditch on the east side of the B1113 road between the villages of Redgrave, Suffolk and South Lopham, Norfolk. The river rises close to the 82foot contour and fl flo ows in an easterly direction though the towns of Diss, Bungay and Beccles. From its source it form ms the southern boundary of Bressingham and Roydon before reaching Diss. At Scole it is crossed by the course of a Roman road, with the A140 bypass just to the east. There is a weir at Billingford d and Billingford Windmill is situated a little to the north.

Beyond Billingford Bridge the River Dove, flowing northwards from Eye, joins on the southern bank, the Mid Suffolk Footpath crosses and the river drops below the 66-foot contour at another weir. east to reach Brockdish and It turns to the north-e Needham before passing to the south of Harleston. There are several lakes on the south bank, the largest covering 100 acres, which were once Weybread Gravel Pits, but now used for fishing. Below the lakes are the remains of a Cluniac Priory and the extensive drained area of Mendham Marshes. Mendham, the birthplace of the artist Alfred Munnings, lies on the Suffolk bank, Wortwell in Norfolk, and Homersfield again in Suffolk. In 1869, Homersfield Bridge, one of the first bridges to be constructed from concrete and iron

Local nature was built across the river. It was commissioned by Sir Shafto Adair, had a span of 50 feet and predated the introduction of true reinforced concrete by several years. It is now the oldest concrete bridge in England and is a Grade II* listed structure. Road traffic was diverted onto a new bridge in 1970 and it was acquired by Norfolk County Council in 1994. They passed it to the Norfolk Historic Buildings Trust, who managed its restoration in 1995. The former Otter Trust had one of its three UK centres, which opened in 1978 and closed in 2006, having successfully boosted otter numbers on the river. At Bungay, the historic head of navigation, the Waveney forms a wide oxbow meander, carry ying with it the Norfolk/Suffolk border. On to Ditchingham, Broome and Ellingham before Geld deston, where an isolated pub stands next to the site of a lock, now replaced by a sluice. This is the current limit of navigation for craft larger than n a rowing boat and at this point the Waveney beco omes tidal. Next stop Gillingham before the riverr gathers waters at Beccles and enters the Broa ads. Beccles old town bridge here restricts navigation to craft with an airdraft of less than 6.5 feett, its quay beyond that changes the nature of the river from a gentle rural feature to a gateway to the North Sea. Beccles was a fishing port for many years and the parents of Lord Nelson were married in the church of St Michael. The river meanders past Barnby Broad and Burgh St Peter to Somerleyton. Here Oulton Dyke branches off the Waveney to Oulton Broad towards Lowestoft. A sea lock, known as Mutford Lock, divides fresh from seawater and

links Oulton Broad with Lake Lothing and the North Sea. This lock is operational and allows traffic through. At Somerleyton the Lowestoft to Norwich railway line crosses the Waveney on a swing bridge, while at St. Olaves the Haddiscoe Cut branches off left to connect the Rivers Yare and Waveney. The Cut was excavated in the 19th century to provide a direct route between Lowestoft Docks and Norwich. Finally the Waveney flows past Burgh Castle into Breydon Water at the confluence of the two rivers. It now forms part of the river Yare and reaches the sea at Great Yarmouth. There was a special version of the Norfolk wherry in use on the Waveney, with boats measuring no more than 70â&#x20AC;&#x2122; by 16â&#x20AC;&#x2122;. There were also steam wherries. BROAD BEAN BRUSCHETTA WITH GOATS’ CHEESE AND THYME

This is a great starter for a relaxed meal or makes a delicious summery lunch for a sunny day. Serves 4 INGREDIENTS

½ a sourdough loaf 300g fresh broad beans 2 spring onions, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 small red chili, deseeded and finely chopped 200g goats’ cheese or halloumi 1tbsp freshly chopped thyme Olive oil for brushing Juice of one lime

METHOD 1. Blanch the broad beans for a couple of minutes until softened and allow to cool down.

LOCAL HISTORIAN

MEMORIES OF REDGRAVE Local historian, Dennis Cross from Diss, shares with us his fascinating collection of old postcards, focusing on a different village in every issue. This issue, we take a walk down memory lane in Redgrave.

The Mill, Redgrave. In 1915, Redgrave Tower Windmill was situated at the South Lopham end of the main street. Sydney Witton was the miller at this time. The outbuilding housed a diesel generator to drive the mill machinery. The mill was burnt down in 1923.

The Knoll, Redgrave. This 1915 view shows the Cross Keys pub. George Arnold was the landlord at the time. Notice the building on the right behind the tree which is being rethatched by local thatcher Mr Doe.

This postcard shows the view looking up Redg grave main street in 1908. There was a baker, butcher, shoemaker, post office, coacch builders, wheelwright, blacksmith, dressmakers and various other shops in Redg grave at this time.

History

The Redgrave Public Elementary School opened in 1845 and was enlarged in 1909 to hold 160 children. The headmaster was Henry J Caston when this picture was taken in 1910. The school closed in 1994 when a new school opened in Botesdale. The building has now been converted into residential housing.

Redgrave g Hall was situated in a well-wooded deer park of 300 acres and overlooked a 46 acre lake. It was used as a military hospital for American soldiers during the Second World War. Sadly this magnifi ficcent hall was demolished after the war.

The Rectory, Redgrave. This 1912 postcard shows an elegantly designed rectory in the centre of the village. Reverend Leonard Holt-Wilson was the rector at the time. The building is now a private house.

The Th Norfolk Postcard Club meets regularly in n Trowse in Norwich and new members arre very welcome. The next meeting is on 12 2 September. Dennis is also the author of several local hiistory books that can be purchased by co ontacting him direct.

The Street, Redgrave in 1920. It was a very peaceful street; no cars, no lorries, just the occasional horse and cart. The population of the village was 492.

The Central Norfolk Walking for Health group put on 6 or 7 walks a week in Norwich and the surrounding area.

GRADE 2 Suitable for those looking to increase their activity level. They are between 30 to 60 minutes long, and may include moderate slopes, steps, stiles and the ground may be uneven.

EXPLORE the private life of a powerful Norfolk family

nowledge of the affairs of Norfolk’s powerful families throughout history has come down to us through many sources.

One of these families, the Pastons, is being celebrated by an exhibition at Norwich Castle Museum this summer. Thanks to a remarkable woman from the fifteenth century, we have graphic accounts of the life of this family struggling to climb the social ladder in a troubled and lawless period. Margaret Mautby was already a wealthy heiress when she married John Paston in about 1440. Although it was an arranged wedding, it seems that the couple were very loving. However, John was often away on business and his wife was left to manage the household and the affairs of a large land holding across the eastern counties. It was thanks to John’s frequent absences that we know so much, for Margaret was a prodigious letter writer and happily for us much of their correspondence has been preserved and published. Shortly after the exhibition at the castle, a WEA evening course will be taking place in Hethersett on Margaret’s letters and what they can

WILDLIFE in Common

Helen Baczkowska of Norfolk Wildlife Trust tells us more about a new project designed to make the most of our local commons.

n early medieval times more than a quarter of Norfolk was common land, where local people had rights to graze their livestock or gather firewood. By the mid-twentieth century, many commons across England had been “enclosed” (fenced as part of farms or estates); most were lost during the 18th and 19th centuries, fuelled by improvements in agriculture and the need to feed growing industrial cities. Many people resented this loss of their livelihood as the commons were fenced, leading to riots and protests, such as those in 1893, in the village of Roydon near Diss. Today more than half of Norfolk parishes retain fragments of common land and relics of commons also survive as fuel allotments or poors trust land, kept to provide assistance for the parish poor. Commons surviving today are frequently poor agriicullturall land d, offten boggy, sand dy, or heath hy areas that can form important refuges for wildlife. Some are protected as nature reserves, such as Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s New Buckenham Common.

Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s new ‘Wildlife in Common’ project aims to help communities celebrate their local commons and learn more about the historic and ecological importance of them, whilst raising awareness of the role commons play today, as places where people can walk freely, unwind from the pressures of modern life and encounter wildlife. Over the next two years and with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Essex and Suffolk Water, NWT will work alongside Norfolk County Council’s Environment Team and the University of East Anglia’s Landscape History Group. Norwich Writers’ Centre will engage schools in learning about common land and NWT’s corporate supporter, Archant, will help produce two short films celebrating Norfolk commons.

FOND MEMORIES of Ipswich Town FC

Neil Lanham celebrates the 40th anniversary of Ipswich Town’s FA Cup victory.

his being the 40th anniversary of my Ipswich Town football team winning the FA Cup, many glorious memories have been rekindled.

As a young boy I used to make drawings of the town players and send them in to the club where they were duly signed and returned. When they won the second division in 1968, I ventured forth to draw the whole team in cartoon fashion, printed out some copies, took them down to the last match of the season, gave them to the players, had a chat and brought home a signed copy. Ten years on and the team had qualified for the FA Cup final, so I got out my ‘68 cartoon sheet, changed the faces and the event and a friend said th hat he would print some forr me. Back he came with a tho oussand. A thousand indeed! So I phoned the club an nd Tommy Parker (the Co ommercial Manager) said he e would take 500. When I de eliv vered them he said that he had a spare table for the play yers’ dinner, so would I like to have that instead of mon ney. “You bet,” I said! Flushed with my success, I prepared

my drawings on a pint mug. Along with nine mates, I took 14 mugs down to the dinner, and whilst Bobby Robson was having his coffee I showed him a mug. He was over the moon and could not believe that I gave him enough for all the players. Our Wembley day was equally as brilliant. Dressed as Yokles we positioned ourselves in front of the twin towers where we sold our posters and sung songs like ‘Big Alan Hunter’, which is still doing the rounds. The best day of my life – apart from the wife and kids of course, but she was there, collecting the money God bless her!

Wymondham Heritage Museum

ymondham Heritage Museum makes an ideal summer holiday outing for all the family.

Children can become archaeologists digging for artefacts in the sandpit or telephone operators on the old Abbey Hotel switchboard. They can ‘clock in’ to the brush room and have a go at operating machinery from the 1890s. They’ll love using the interactive computers to discover what life was like for children in prison or finding out more about the spooky dungeon. For the adults there is a display charting the history of the Market Cross which celebrates its 400th anniversary this year. New this season is the Wymondham Women in the First World War display and the refurbished Robert Kett display now includes copies of the original indictments against Robert and his brother William. They are in Latin – but don’t worry, full translations are provided.

You’ll need a break after all that history and The Bridewell Tearoom is conveniently located off the main gallery. Here you can enjoy a welcome cuppa and a slice of homemade cake or a tasty scone. Cold drinks and snacks are also available for the children. While you’re in the tearoom, don’t miss the wishing well. Toss a coin, make a wish and you never know, it might just come true. The tearoom is free to enter so if you’ve already visited the museum you can pop in any time on Monday to Friday 10.30am to 3.30pm. The museum is open Monday to Saturday 10am4pm, Sundays 1pm-4pm. : Insomnia is a complicated sleep disorder that is still misunderstood, but as 30-50% of the population are affected by insomnia most will experience it at some point in their lives. Don’t let your kids leave for university without it

oung people heading off to college this year will be faced with soaring fees and having to learn to cope with debt, but unfortunately some could end up seriously out of pocket due to inadequate insurance. Take a look in the average student’s room and you’ll discover thousands of pounds worth of hi tech items, including laptops, tablets, TVs, digital cameras and smartphones. Insurance is one of the things often overlooked when students set off for campus, so here are a few pointers for those going to university for the first time. Essentially, there are three ways for students to get insurance: Existing family home insurance Before you fork out for any insurance – check your parents’ home contents insurance policy. More comprehensive standard home insurance policies include cover for family members when they’re away at university. Check the maximum limit for each individual item that’s covered, it’s normally around £1,500 – but could be less. There may also be caveats around specific items (like an expensive laptop) and certain circumstances (like communal areas) – so make sure you check the policy wording carefully. If you want to take your bike to uni with you it’s worth remembering that it’s unlikely it will be covered under your parents’ home insurance policy. It should, however, be fairly simple and inexpensive to add this cover onto their existing policy. Alternatively, you can

a get stand-alone policy to insure your bike – but this could work out to be more expensive. Stand-alone cover Specialist cover exists for students in the form of stand-alone policies which are deliberately designed to take into account student needs. This is usually the most comprehensive of the three options, but can be the most expensive. University accommodation insurance Many universities offer cover for those students who are in halls and other types of accommodation owned by the university. Such cover can be good value as you don’t ‘pay’ extra for it, but is generally quite limited. Around 80 universities have this core cover – so it’s worth checking if yours is one of them. If you’re in a rented house, building insurance should be covered by your landlord, but make sure to confirm this before signing your contract. Getting your insurance in place is a great idea for students as not only does it protect your valuable possessions but it’s also one less thing to worry about – enabling you to fully concentrate on your studies.

South Norfolk artist and sculptor is heading up an epic mission to build a path of blessing for walkers and riders across the breadth of the British Isles from Lowestoft in Suffolk to St David’s in Wales. Steve Eggleton is pioneering a unique pilgrimage with regular stops of rest and spiritual refreshment along a 400-mile route using artwork to tell the nation about God’s love. Via Beata – A Way of Blessing – began as a valiant faith venture with wife Gill but now there is growing widespread support as it continues to blaze a trail of hope across East Anglia, the Midlands and into Wales.

The initial concept was plotted on ordinance survey maps using rural footpaths and quiet roads before Steve learnt that the line cut straight through his property in Banham and which later became the site for the first ‘way station’, or resting place, in 2009. Since then more than 15 have been added and half a dozen are currently under construction “As the project has developed we are constantly surprised by the way it has touched individuals, churches, groups and events. It has been far beyond our wildest dreams,” says Steve. While marking and changing lives, Via Beata has also brought new spiritual injection to many rural churches and centres as they become part of a collaborative venture that includes dedication services and annual celebration weekends. Creative ideas and connections have dovetailed as the vision for a ‘way station’ approximately every ten miles of the route gathers pace. “We could never have done this on our own – it has been a chapter of miracles,” reflects Steve, who teaches a weekly group of apprentice woodcarvers that include a local Anglican minister. Together, they help design, carve, oil, paint and erect some of the artwork installations including a giant oak cross and brightly painted relief panels depicting some of Jesus’ parables. “Producing the artwork brings great joy and it is a wonderful way to share the gospel,” says Steve.

Ex-offenders and struggling addicts have developed new job skills to help them back into society during numerous workshops. Some of the men also cycled the entire Via Beata route from St David’s Head in West Wales wearing jumpers bearing the words: ‘A Way of Blessing’.
