Welcome

Before this issue goes off to print, I’ve found several events to attend, a course to book myself onto, a cake to bake, a facial treatment from #needlequeendiss, a couple of coach trips and three competitions to enter! Just think, you could be seeing ‘The Jacksons’ (or several other top acts) if you’re lucky enough to win tickets to Newmarket Nights or Forest Live. WOW. Is this really all from a local magazine that is delivered free through your door? Well yes, lovely readers, it is! You and 49,999 other village homes get all this delivered, and more, every two months. Not to mention the details of hundreds of fabulous local businesses who offer their products and services just for you. Let’s all do our bit and support local! Summer is my time of year and I’m counting the sleeps until Latitude kicks off on Thursday 13 July. Full details of the line-up and how to buy your tickets can be found at www.latitudefestival.com. Keep a look out as we will be there in our 1976 VW camper, Queenie. Just a reminder that we’re very happy to support anything and everything local so if you are organising a community event this year, or you know someone who is, do remember that you can promote your events for free with Village People by submitting them directly to our website www.village-people.info. With thousands and thousands of readers, it’s the best way to get free promotion in the region. If you know someone who runs a local business (large or small) and is thinking of promoting themselves in the local area, please pass on the message that one of our three magazines, the South Norfolk edition, is now completely full, but we have started a waiting list, so a quick call or email to me can get their details on the VIP list! Happy summer everyone!

Since its revival in 2008, Diss Carnival has gone from strength to strength – it’s the annual party that the whole town gets involved in. Residents and visitors line the streets of Diss to watch a procession through the town then join in the entertainment at the fun day. This year, the carnival is set to be bigger and better than ever before, celebrating carnivals through the ages. Taking place right in the heart of Diss, in the

park, there’s plenty of fun in store. Expect the unexpected, from Vikings to vintage vehicles – and everything in between. Meander around the iconic Mere and enjoy the stalls and activities, or join us ringside for some fantastic entertainment! This year, you can enjoy Diss’ own version of It’s A Knockout with five inflatable challenges from sumo suits to a bucking pig, as well as games in the arena.

The procession kicks off from the high school at 12.45pm, finishing at the park. The fun day will run from 1pm – 5.30pm. With so much taking place throughout the day, make sure you pick up a copy of the Diss Carnival programme so you don’t miss a thing! For more information, visit www.diss-carnival.co.uk

A WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE IN PALGRAVE Memories of Palgrave with Photographs and Anecdotes has over a hundred old photographs, some dating back to the 1850s. The book started out as a history book, with Ken Knockles leading a research group of fellow Palgravians. After a couple of years, Ken sadly died, and it seemed that much of the enthusiasm did as well. Peter Atkinson had been entrusted with all the photographs and after a few years of little progress on the book, he decided to publish the photographs as a tribute to Ken. Using some of the material he had already collected, Peter pulled together a selection of anecdotes from a few of the older Palgravians to paint a picture of village life and give e everyone the chance e to see Palgrave as it oncce was. The book is availab ble from Wortham Post Office and Leslie Ward’s Gift Shop in Diss, priced at £7 (with profits going to o Palgrave Church).

BEAT THE BONK WITH A TUDOR BOOST BAR South Norfolk based Tudor Bakehouse have developed an energy boosting bar for riders of the Nine Town Sportive. The organisers of Diss Cyclathon have been working with Paul Muncilla, owner of Tudor Bakehouse, to formulate a unique, high-energy cyclist’s snack bar. Neil Collins, organiser of the Nine Town Sportive at Diss Cyclathon said:“When you’re riding 50 or 100 miles it’s hard to eat enough to keep your energy levels up. The Tudor Boost Bar is perfect and packed with goodies.” Tudor Bakehouse will be

providing the new bars as part of the free lunch pack on offer to the 50 & 100 mile Nine Town Sportive riders. The bar will also be on sale in all five of the Tudor Bakehouse stores: TB2, Harleston, Diss, Eye and Long Stratton. The Diss Cyclathon will take place on 25 June and celebrates all that is great about cycling. With rides from 5 to 15 miles and the Nine Town Sportive with distances of 25 miles, 50 miles or 100 miles, there is something for everyone. To find out more, visit www.disscyclathon.org.

FRONT-OF-HOUSE THEATRE MANAGER WINS GREEN AWARD A front-of-house manager at Norwich Theatre Royal is one of the first people in Britain to be given national recognition for her work to safeguard the environment within the cultural sector. Helen Tully has been presented with one of the inaugural Creative Green Awards by environmental body Julie’s Bicycle. It follows the efforts of her and colleagues to cut carbon emissions and introduce environmental

initiatives within the theatre, such as boosting recycling, introducing dual-flush toilets to reduce water use, the use of rechargeable batteries for on-stage microphones, and encouraging staff to reduce car use travelling to and from work. The awards were presented at London’s Somerset House by Caroline Lucas, co-leader of The Green Party, and were open to over 50 arts organisations across the country.

Ladies Who Lunch THe WHiTe Horse

The White Horse, Thelnetham www.whitehorsethelnetham.co.uk 01379 898 779 Hopton Road, Thelnetham, Diss IP22 1JN

The White Horse pub sits on the Norfolk/Suffolk border between Hinderclay and Hopton in the pretty village of Thelnetham. With beautiful walks and striking views, Thelnetham is well-known for the restoration of its historic windmill. I last visited The White Horse approximately 18 years ago when we lived close by and would drop in with the children after a long walk. As the children grew up, the lure of“coke and chips”at the pub was often the main reason for the walk! I remember it being quite cosy, decorated with knickknacks and food served in baskets with maroon napkins. Times and indeed food fashions have changed! Fast forward 18 years and The White Horse is now run by Peter and his mother Veronica. I had read a number of very positive reviews so was really looking forward to lunch. My friend and I arrived at 12.15 on a Wednesday and were greeted by a lovely, smiley girl who served us our elderflower cordials. We could see a good selection of draught ales including Adnams Broadside and a Thelnetham Thirst Quencher, made at a local brewery. With Aspalls on tap I suddenly wished I wasn’t driving! For lunch I chose the chicken pie and my friend had the vegetable moussaka. Mine was beautifully presented. A creamy mash on the bottom, perfectly cooked broccoli and a neat pie sitting on the top. The pastry was crisp, the chicken tender and the mushroom and bacon sauce well-seasoned. Delicious!

16

My friend’s moussaka, described as‘deconstructed’, certainly was! It was more of an attractive, appetising jumble of chargrilled vegetables with a tasty coriander pesto and sweet potato and harissa puree. For pudding, my friend hit the jackpot. A fabulous bitter chocolate and peanut torte with honeycomb ice cream and brittle. The perfectly sized portion of torte and ice-cream rendered her speechless for the few minutes she took to finish it! I chose the rhubarb bakewell. I really love panna cotta, which was the other option, but the thought of it with pina colada was a stomach curdling moment… so bakewell it was! More good pastry, the filling was dense and there was a lovely rhubarb jam at the bottom.

Lunches were priced at two courses for £12 which was good value. The menu changes monthly using locally-sourced, seasonal ingredients, and I’m pleased to report that there wasn’t a maroon napkin in sight! Pop along and see for yourself – and why not combine your visit with a lovely walk at Knettishall Heath or a visit to the windmill. Lunches are available Wednesday – Sunday, 12pm - 3pm

HARLESTON & WAVENEY “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” – Picasso. Our readers living on the Norfolk/Suffolk border will be pleased to hear that a superb collection of talented professional and local artists are once more opening up their studios to the public this summer to host the Harleston & Waveney Art Trail (HWAT). Tucked away in the Waveney Valley is a thriving arts community that come together annually to present an abundance of artworks inspired by their reading, their writing, but most importantly by their beautiful surroundings. The team of more than 30 artists welcome buyers, browsers, curious minds and keen learners to venture out to view and engage with this accessible and alternative entertainment held at weekends over June and July 2017. HWAT was established in 2004 when artists began opening their studios and workshops to the public – this has continued to be a success for more than a decade of consecutive years now. In previous

Art Trail

years, the Harleston Gallery functioned as the hub of the trail and exciting guest invitations and appearances attracted audiences from afar. Since the Harleston Gallery closed, the collective has become an exhibiting group. This year’s exciting newly-designed trail brochure provides details of each artist’s studio and also of the exhibitions planned throughout the summer months. Not limited to any one media, the trail aims to shed light on the broad range of skill, technique and bespoke artwork available in this picturesque town, each year showcasing emerging and established artists that contribute to this contemporary scene. Going through the long list of artists that bring this trail to life, I have selected a few that demonstrate the diversity of backgrounds, styles and concepts waiting to be discovered. With summer unfolding before us, it is wonderful to see such a spread of colour bursting out of the studio doors. • Nell Close’s arrangements of floral scenes take the viewer’s eyes on a long winding journey down geometric painted paving. The vibrant and exotic nature of her work is immensely refreshing. www.nellclose.co.uk • Keeping with the outdoors, Anne Steel’s intricate sculptures of insects and birds have a timeless elegant manner about them. Exploring structures through bringing recycled jewellery parts together (Angel Wasp), Steel assembles these unique sculptures as both commissions and collections. www.annesteel.co.uk • ScribblyRoo is definitely a fine contemporary name to watch out for this summer; painting, crafting and designing. A Graphic Communications

23

graduate, she brings out a playful and inventive narrative through a mixed media body of work. Strong simplified compositions, fascinating characters and intriguing unsaid concepts enhance her evident creative flair. www.scribblyroo.co.uk • Valerie Lindsell presents some hugely satisfying works this summer, focusing directly on the landscape, how it comes together, the lines and levels curating a scene, further portraying through an abstract design the form and shape of our surroundings. The clear division of parts and thick blue tones in Summer Fields lets out a warm sigh on my eyes. http://valerielindsell.com • Similarly abstract is Dom Theobald, exercising brilliant hues in his work bringing together rigid designs of objects. Having shown his work in prestigious venues including the Tate Britain, I would advise taking the opportunity to meet him in this raw familiar environment. www.domtheobald.com • Nicky Stainton introduces a very engaging element to her practice; a delicate and complex one. In focusing on the idea of a‘close-up’or far away view, she draws attention to‘presence’and ‘invisibility’. Her portrait series looks at detailed figures, women’s stories and the narrative held in a gaze, wonderfully depicting the relationship between age, journey, wisdom and wonder, as shown in Godmother IV. www.nickystainton.artweb.com • Last on my list is textile artist Caryl Challis. The combination of material and process unites fabrics, waxes, dyes and the picturesque South Norfolk landscape in this colourful and detailed collection. I am especially interested in the relation the‘method of making’has with the construction of the countryside; where in this body of work

24

each addition to the scene is a contrasting complexion, every angle of an object or surface has been considered hence the introduction of new perspectives. www.carylchallis.com And that’s only seven of them! Be sure to put aside some time and look at these brilliant artists online and visit www.hwat.org.uk for more information on the Harleston & Waveney Art Trail. One last thanks to Malcolm Cudmore, Christina Greathead and Caryl Challis for bringing this very impressive troop of artists in to the limelight, and to Nicky Stainton for bringing this to our attention! Key dates and times: 24-25 June 2017, 1-2 July 2017, 8-9 July 2017 Studios open: 11am - 6pm Kristy Campbell kristycamp17@gmail.com instagram: kristycamp

Redwings’ Open Day Returns! The UK’s largest horse sanctuary is opening the doors to its Norfolk headquarters this July for an exclusive look behind the scenes.

Join Redwings Horse Sanctuary’s team on Sunday 23 July for a day of tours, demonstrations, food and fun at their Hapton headquarters, south of Norwich. Although the sanctuary has visitor centres across the UK, it is only on special occasions that Redwings opens its headquarters to the public, so there is a great deal of anticipation for the return of the Redwings Hapton Open Day this summer – and with a jam-packed schedule of activities in store, the event definitely will not disappoint!

Redwings’ rehoming team will be showcasing how the charity trains its horses to get them ready to find loving homes outside the sanctuary. And special guests Norfolk Fire and Rescue will be there on the day to offer a fascinating demonstration of how they rescue animals from tricky situations – with the help of training model horse Randy of course! There will also be lots of opportunities for visitors to get hands-on with the horses themselves with “Meet the ponies” tours, pony grooming and even a chance to meet Redwings’ mascots Red and Wings – so don’t forget your wellies! The Redwings Open day is free and will take place on 23 July from 10-4pm at Redwings Hapton, Norwich, Norfolk, NR15 1SP.

Strawberry elderflower cake

n

othing says early English summertime like strawberries and elderflower. This cake is perfect for a picnic or afternoon tea in the garden. Make it up to four hours before serving and store in the fridge. If you’re transporting it for a picnic, it might be wise to do so ‘deconstructed’! There’s a few optional ideas noted too, for adding to ‘the base’, to help you along as you experiment.

Tip: If life’s too short to make ‘jam’, you can use a good shop-bought one instead. It’s not as delicious, and you may want to reduce the sugar in the cake slightly to compensate, but it’ll still taste great. Serves 10 – 12 495kcal, 53g carbs per slice

Ingredients

Cake: 150g butter, softened 300g caster sugar 3 eggs 375g self-raising flour 60ml elderflower cordial 125g strawberries Filling/Decoration 500ml double cream 30ml elderflower cordial 10g icing sugar 250g strawberries mint sprigs to serve

‘Jam’: 125g strawberries 25g caster sugar

Method: l

Preheat the oven to 190ºC. Grease a 20cm round deep springform cake tin and line with baking parchment.

l

First make the cake: Chop the strawberries into sultana-sized pieces. Beat together the butter and caster sugar until light and fluffy.

l

Add the eggs one at a time, adding a spoonful of flour with the final egg to prevent curdling. Fold in the flour, then add the elderflower cordial, stirring gently. Add the strawberries and gently mix through.

l

Pour the mix into the cake tin and spread it evenly. Bake for 50 – 55 minutes until the top is firm to the touch and deep golden. Leave to cool in the tin.

l

34

Meanwhile, make the ‘jam’. Halve or quarter the strawberries, depending on size, and put in a small pan with the sugar and a tablespoon of water. Heat until the sugar dissolves then boil rapidly for two minutes until the berries are soft and mushy. Allow to cool.

l

l

Whip the double cream with the elderflower cordial and the icing sugar until it’s stiff. Choose the ‘best’ strawberries – about 8 – 10 berries, and halve them. Thinly slice the remainder. When the cake has cooled, take it out of its tin and cut in half horizontally, to make two cake discs. Spread the ‘jam’ onto the lower half, then add a layer of elderflower cream about 1/3 of it. Finish with a layer of thinly sliced strawberries. Top with the second cake, then spread the remaining cream on top. Decorate with the halved strawberries and a few sprigs of mint. The Pennoyer Centre’s volunteer BakeForce make delicious cakes for sale in the café, which in 2014 won the EDP Norfolk Food & Drink Best Baking Award. The café, in Pulham St Mary, is open Mon-Sat from 9.30am to 3.30pm. www.pennoyers.org.uk 01379 676660 The Pennoyer Centre, Station Road, Pulham St Mary, Norfolk, IP21 4QT

Garden Jottings from Kenn

here is a saying ‘no rain, no rainbows’, and here in the east sightings of these beautiful arcs can be few and far between as we live in one of the driest parts of the country. as gardeners though, feasting the eyes on a myriad of magical colours is not so hard, as plants come in more shades than any rainbow could wish for. now that the danger of frost has receded and things are warming up, bedding and basket plants are rapidly putting on growth and bursting into colourful bloom. swinging proudly on brackets and adorning tubs and containers to welcome all who pass them by, these wonders can be a bit labour-intensive but should put on a show that lasts all summer, as long as you continue to tend them with water, food and regular dead-heading. When creating or revamping parts of your garden think about how you use colour, as flowers make a garden it’s always nice to have at least something in bloom. Unlike annual bedding plants, most shrubs, climbers and herbaceous perennials only have a relatively short flowering period of a few weeks, so it’s important to ensure that your selections include a succession of overlapping bloomers to keep up the floral interest. There are a couple of ways to achieve this, either visit a local independent garden centre that specialises in plants and can offer sound horticultural advice based on experience, or alternatively, purchase plants in flower every month over a year to build up a complete collection.

shrubs help to create the structure of the garden, and by using choices of different heights, leaf shapes and colours they will provide the backdrop for other plants to grow against. Try sambucus ‘Black lace’, cotinus ‘royal purple’ or Berberis atropurpurea for a dark leaf influence, and the foliage of spirea ‘Gold Mound’, choisya ‘sundance’ or lonicera ‘Baggesen’s Gold’ to add lighter splashes of interest. don’t forget that green is also a colour and is the most predominant shade across the garden, from the humble lawn to hedges and trees. Use plants with deep green leaves behind strong vivid-coloured blooms for a bold statement, and lighter shades with paler choices for a calmer combination. Herbaceous perennials are the stars of the borders, available in a riot of colours and traditionally used in mixed beds and cottage-style gardens, but if kept to a simple but intentionally limited colour selection, such as whites and blues, they can look equally elegant in more a contemporary style. They say that at the end of the rainbow you’ll find a crock of gold to fulfil your dreams, but until that time comes, well chosen good quality plants are not necessarily expensive and are a great investment to enhance your surroundings.

Cheers, Ken

BRING ON THE SUNSHINE

ON THE VEGETABLE PATCH By June, your vegetable patch will be in full swing with salad crops ready to harvest. Resow lettuces every two weeks to keep your salad bowl full over summer. Early potatoes will also be ready and if the leaves are yellowing on onion and garlic plants this means that they are ready too. Tomatoes should be setting fruit so make sure that they are well-fed and pinch out any side shoots to create new plants. If the

leaves are yellowing on your tomato plants, feed them more regularly. Now the risk of frost has passed, plant out tender vegetables like squash, sweetcorn and courgettes. Start picking courgettes and marrows early to encourage more fruit. It’s not too late to plant runner beans, which can be sowed directly into the ground. When the pods start to grow, make sure you pick them regularly to make space for new pods.

BEAUTIFUL BUTTERFLIES Planting the right flowers can encourage a beautiful display of butterflies in your garden. Like bees, butterflies are attracted to nectar, so nectar-rich plants like buddleia (also known as butterfly bush) will encourage them to visit your garden. Purple coneflower is a particular favourite of the monarch butterfly, along with clethra, which has

a lovely fragrance and a pretty mid-summer bloom. Marjoram is great for butterflies and, as a type of Oregano, it can also be used in cooking. Choose warm, sunny spots for the ese plants and soon your garden g will be alive with colourful c butterflies.

PEST WATCH While your garden is abundant with fruit and vegetables, it is also attractive to pests. June and July is a key time for vine weevils which can cause your plants to wilt. Vine weevils can affect a wide range of plants, especially those grown in containers. Nematodes can be used to co ontrol them if you don’t wish to use pesticides. Re emember that lots of insects are on you ur side! Ladybirds, lacewings and hovverflies will feed on greenfly and other pests, p so it is worth protecting them. Lacewing larvae can even be used as a natural pest control – just apply to leaves where aphids have taken hold. Look out for powdery mildew on pllants, remove any affected parts and use a fungicide to prevent it from spre eading. In dry weather powdery mildew is a particular p p p problem for plants such as roses and clematis,, so keep p an eye y out.

SUMMER FRUITS To accompany your freshlyharvested vegetables you need some juicy fruit for dessert – and what’s better than perfectly ripe strawberries on a summer day? June is the ideal time to harvest strawberries so check plants daily to get them at their best. It’s also the last chance to harvest rhubarb, so make the most of that before leaving the plant to grow normally so it is in good shape for next year. July is a great time for

cherries, if you can get them before the birds do! When picking cherries, use a pair of scissors to remove the stalks as well as the fruit – leaving them on the tree can cause disease. Protect developing fruit with netting and keep plants well fed and watered with potash liquid feed. Prune your plum, apricot, cherry and peach trees now to reduce the risk of silver leaf disease and enable more fruitful harvests in future years.

The Blossom & Yarn festival returns Following the huge success of the 2015 Blossom and Yarn event, the knitting and flower festival is back for 2017. Held over 4 days from Friday 7 July, each of the six churches in the Wayland parish h group will be adorned with knitted displays complimented with flowers and foliage. Artistic Director, Lois Gill, a celebrated craftswomen and three times RHS Chelsea Flower Show medallist is leading a team of enthusiastic knitters, gardeners and florists to create a festival around the theme of creation. Each church will have a different theme from an undersea world to the Garden of Eden. Work is already well underway with Percy the peacock and assorted parrots and monkeys already created from recycled knitted squares from the previous festival and new patterns that Lois and her team have devised.

Friday 7 July to Monday 10 July Times: 10am to 6pm

Once again the aim of the festival is to bring the six parishes together and create a sense of community whilst having fun. The funds raised will help ensure that the ancient historic churches remain at the heart of the life and landscape of these six rural Norfolk villages.

How pets can help the bereaved In the UK we love pets: 40% of households own a pet and there are 57 million pets across the country. The companionship of animals is proven to make you feel happier and can therefore provide significant physical, emotional and psychological benefits to the lonely and bereaved. It is scientifically recognised that humans have an instinct towards physical contact and touch. A lack of this can raise your blood pressure and make you more susceptible to depression and insomnia. Interacting with an animal fulfils our need for physical touch, thereby increasing our resistance to these issues.

Therefore, it is no accident that a study performed with the recently bereaved elderly revealed that widowed women who own pets experience fewerr symptoms of disease and use less medication n than those without pets. With thanks to Anne Beckett-Allen n, Director of Rosedale Funeral Hom me

Grief or loneliness can also lead to a reluctance to leave the house or care for oneself. Not only has playing with a cat or dog been shown to naturally elevate levels of serotonin and dopamine, but the experience of caring for an animal may encourage you to better care for yourself, as well as provide a reason to go outside and potentially talk to new people. The higher rates of exercise associated with pet ownership will release endorphins and elevate your mood, putting you in a better position to deal with the loss of a loved one. health benefits of having a pet include: Being less likely to suffer from depression Feeling calmer and more relaxed Providing a sense of physical closeness A good excuse to get out of the house and do more exercise.

Mulbarton Words Week 2017 Mulbarton’s annual celebration of words, written, spoken and sung, will be back for a third year at the beginning of June, running from Sunday 4th to Saturday 10th at various venues in and around the South Norfolk village of Mulbarton. The week-long week long festival is designed to bring enjoyment to the community and the organisers’

aim is to provide something for everyone. In previous years events have included everything from poetry to rock, authors and actors to walks and quizzes and the 2017 festival promises to maintain that momentum with more exciting events throughout the week. The first day will include the Big Quiz at The World’s End, a fun evening with a variety of intriguing challenges as well as the usual quiz questions!

Monday night will feature historical fiction novelists including Rory Clements, the award-winning author of the John Shakespeare series of Tudor spy thrillers, historical crime fiction writer Margaret Callow, and Guinevere Glasfurd, whose first novel, set in 17th century Amsterdam, was shortlisted for a Costa book award. The popular Wymondham playwriting group Four by Four will be back with another excellent evening of theatre in the Village Hall on Tuesday. As in previous years Mulbarton Words Week will be funding visitors to the village schools with children’s author and illustrator Grace Sandford making a welcome return, this time working with children in years 3 to 6, whilst children’s author Kevin Price will be visiting the younger children. This year’s Hanover Gardens event (open to all) will be an afternoon tea party with Tina Chamberlain, Norfolk’s answer to Pam Ayres, reading some of her original and highly entertaining work. The 2016 tea party was a huge success so be sure to book early. Wednesday evening will see a guided walk led by local history author Jill Wright around Mulbarton Church, the village pond and onwards down the

old turnpike towards Norwich. Although the walk is free of charge, numbers will be limited so advance booking is essential. Mulbarton Community Choir, which was founded in the autumn of 2016, has proved immensely popular and will be performing as part of a musical event taking place at Mulbarton Village Hall on the Friday evening. The Raising Voices Youth Choir is among the other choirs taking part. All profits from this evening will be shared between EACH and the East Anglian Air Ambulance. Another music event, this time at nearby Hethel Church, will bring the week to a close on Saturday night with the highly acclaimed Upper Octave performing their successful show ‘From Bizet to Broadway’. The Words Week festival is organised by a small group of volunteers (more help always welcome) who want to create an event that the village can be proud of and which will help enhance the spirit of community. For further information, including details of how to buy tickets, check out the Words Week website, www.mulbartonwords.org or visit their Facebook page.

f you know someone who struggles to read the small print in local newspapers, Waveney Words might be able to help. For the past thirty years the organisation has been recording local news and information so that blind and partially-sighted people in our community do not miss out on what’s going on. The secretary of Waveney Words, Trevor Freeborn, has been involved with the Talking Newspaper since its inception in Diss. Under the guidance of the National Talking Newspaper Association, Trevor and the team distribute a free recording of local news every fortnight, by means of a memory stick which can be played through a computer or ‘boom box’. The organisation even has a few boom boxes available for loan if required. The group has recently appointed a new chairman, Audrey Moskowitz, who is partially-sighted and has benefited from the service herself. Audrey will

Shelfanger school and rectory The school and rectory were situated next to the parish church. These are all now private houses.

bus Shelfanger had a population of over 300 in 1938. A bus is seen passing the recently closed Cross Keys pub to pick up passengers bound for Diss on market day.

Shelfanger village shop In 1915, the village shop was run by John Kerridge and was situated between The Crown pub and the blacksmith. These are all now private houses.

Getting around our C ommunity

Living in this part of East Anglia in retirement is a pleasure which many of us are fortunate enough to enjoy to the full. However, the rural idyll can become a challenge when we are no longer able to drive, or choose not to run a car, and have to depend on the vagaries of the local transport network to get us to appointments, to do the weekly shopping, or to visit friends or family.

There are various commercial services operating rurally but few are as customer-focussed, or as reasonably priced, as the much-used Community Bus Service based in Rickinghall. Generally, though not exclusively, operating on weekdays on a notfor-profit basis, the Community Bus Service is run under the auspices of the Rickinghall Parish Council and currently provides transport for anyone wishing to take advantage of the service. Now covering around 20 local communities with a friendly, comfortable and safe transport service around Suffolk and Norfolk, the Community Bus Service’s specially-adapted vehicle can accommodate up to eight passengers, or seven passengers and one wheelchair. It is available for visits to the doctor or hospital, shopping trips, transport to and from a railway station, for club outings or simply for visiting

Stop thieves getting into your home this summer W

arm and sunny weather is an ideal time to relax in the garden but the summer months can bring rich pickings for opportunist thieves targeting your home. A spokesman for Malthouse Security, based near Diss, said: “It is very tempting to leave doors and windows open to create a draught and enjoy a summer breeze and, when having a barbecue in the back garden, homeowners often tell their friends to let themselves in through the front or back door or a gate. “Unfortunately it is also very tempting for burglars to strike and this can be heartbreaking for a family. Within seconds they can lose their valuables and then when they try and claim on their insurance they will often find that there are no payments on an unlocked property.

“Our advice is simple – remember to lock your doors, sheds, outbuild dings and garages, and put away gard den and play equipment. Don’t leave downstairs windows open at night and make sure any ladders are padlocked and cannot be used to access upstairs windows.” Malthouse Security can provide CCTV, intruder alarms and door entry systems including wireless, keyless and a video door entry system. To find out how Malthouse Security can help protect your home or business call 01379 890 606, email sales@malthouse-security. co.uk or visit the company’s website www.malthouse-security.co.uk

Installation service & maintenance of all type of security and communications systems, covering East Anglia www.malthouse-security.co.uk “After having our iron gates stolen, Malthouse Security came highly recommended. A person came out to discuss our requirements, followed by the engineers who fitted everything then showed us how it worked. All very quick and easy and most importantly we now have peace of mind.” The Dell Caravan Park in Thurston

Mum’s mercy mission for refugees

Norfolk journalist, Sandie Shirley, spotlights the inspiring stories of men and women from the region and beyond that have seen them reach for victory. For more stories visit: www.refreshingwaters.co.uk

W

hen mother-of-two, Alison Marlow, saw the graphic news reels of Middle Eastern refugees living in sub-zero temperatures, her heart burned with compassion – especially for the barely-clad children and helpless babies. Two years later she is a vital channel for material aid, having sent 550 boxes of quality clothing to the vulnerable and overlooked, after joining national Christian charity, Samara’s Aid Appeal as a registered collector. Alison’s mission began in January 2015 when she mounted a heart-felt plea to her church – Hope Community Church in Wymondham – for warm clothing for refugees trying to survive the harsh winter. Within two weeks, two car loads of clothing for adults and children were boxed and labelled in time to join the charity shipment across Europe to the Iraq border. It was the beginning of God’s on-going, miraculous provision, with offers of help coming from both inside the church and the wider community. Alison extends a rallying call for donations from her Wymondham community and beyond – response is growing through word of mouth and support from Browick Road Primary School and Wymondham Girl Guides. Now she is looking for a larger dry storage area to enable her to continue with the work and is hopeful for a team of volunteers to help pack prior to each shipment The quality clothing is earmarked for minority groups of refugees mainly in Syria and Iraq, people who haven’t made it to the big UN and Red Cross camps, where the main aid is, and who are living in tents and partially-built buildings without windows, she explains. Alison recalls the TV footage that highlighted those who fled to the mountains for safety in just the lightweight clothes they were wearing; she was heartbroken. As a mum, she was also moved by the suffering of tiny vulnerable babies when

she saw a mother holding her new born. “Instead of smiling with joy she looked so hopeless,” says Alison, who also promotes fund-raising initiatives to provide basic hygiene packs for expectant mothers and their babies. Her faith in action is prompted by the Bible passage, James 2: 15-16, and the reminder to clothe and feed the poor. Today she is encouraged when she learns about the mobilisation of churches nationwide to collect generous donations for Samara Aid Appeal. There are even furry boots for children to wear in the snow instead of flip flops and some refugees are dressed in mink coats in place of summer t-shirts to stave off the freezing winter temperatures that claimed 6,000 lives, primarily in Iraq, during the winter of 2014/15. Samara’s Aid Appeal began when Brighton woman, Samara Levy, rallied the mums at her son’s school to donate clothing. Soon UK churches also became involved with prayer and practical aid to help ease the atrocities with three annual shipments in September/October, January and around Easter.

Improve your hearingg: Did you know that tackling your hearing loss can change your life? It’s no grand boast: we hear these words all the time from patients who enjoy the benefits of hearing aids.

Change your life!

But most important of all, once your new hearing aids are programmed for you and fitted, you can try them out for a while with a refund if you don n’tt agree that they HAVE changed your life.

They tell us about the joy of hearing all the sounds that make up everyday life; birds singing, raindrops on the windowpane and leaves rustling in the breeze. Gone is the embarrassment of constantly having to ask people to repeat what they said, and the redfaced moments when they thought they’d heard, but in fact, mis-heard. And our patients say they can once more enjoy the TV or listen to radio or music because their partners stop complaining that the volume is far too loud. But most of all, they lose the sense of isolation they had felt because they weren’t able to communicate with family and friends. They no longer avoid social gatherings because now they don’t have to struggle to take part in conversations because of the background noise. The first step in enjoying all these benefits is to make an appointment to have a hearing test and discuss the dozens of options that are available to you to help with your hearing loss. Our range of hearing instruments is wide and our audiologists are highly trained to help you make the right choice to suit your hearing needs, lifestyle and pocket.

By Karen Finch rhad fshaa frsa Karen Finch is the Managing Director and lead audiologist at The Hearing Care Centre. The multi-award winning, family-run company has 23 centres across Suffolk and Norfolk. For more information visit www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk or call 01473 230330.

Q&A HEALTH Q:

Can homeopathic remedies help to treat insomnia?

A:

Homeopathy has a remarkable history of treating insomnia. Finding the right remedy depends on the cause of your insomnia. Whether it be anxiety or grief, one of the following suggestions may help: Ars Album can help if you are anxious or restless. Anxiety, fear and worry prevent sleep by causing you to wake with a jump and can get worse after midnight. Coffea Cruda may help if sleeplessness is caused by rapid thoughts or an active mind. It will calm a constant flow of ideas, physical restlessness and nervous energy. Gelsemium will help with sleeplessness from anticipatory anxiety. Try this if your mind feels dull and drowsy; if it’s hard to think yet difficult to go to sleep. This type of insomnia gets worse with bad

news or when you focus on thinking about your problems. Ignatia can be used to ease insomnia if your symptoms include intense, repeated yawning or frequent sighing. It may also help when sleeplessness is caused by a recent disappointment or grief. Sleep is important so it is worth trying some different remedies to get it right. If insomnia is not fully relieved by the remedy that seems to match your sleeplessness, it may be due to other health problems. A Sign of the Times:

Old Buckenham

In this new series of articles, Sarah Doig explores our village signs ns and what they tell us about the community and its history.

T

he Old Buckenham village sign, sited in a prominent position on the common ground in the centre of the community, is a splendid example of its kind. First erected in 1979 by the local Women’s Institute (as many village signs were), it captures perfectly the village’s long history. The main feature of the sign is a castle. In fact, it represents the two castles that once existed in the parish. The first was founded in the eleventh century by the lord of the manor, William d’Albini (or d’Aubigny). Its successor was built in the following century by his son. The remains of this castle sit just outside the more recent village of New Buckenham. Coats of arms on the sign are of the lords of the manor. Set on either side of the castle are two deer which, according to locals, signify the derivation of the name Buckenham. However, scholars believe that Buccham (as it was called in the Domesday Book of 1086) was named after a man called Bucca who lived there. Even if this is true, Old Buckenham’s medieval great park would have been stocked with many bucks and so the animals have a rightful place on the village sign. The sign also depicts four people which tell the story of the village. The central figure, set in the open gateway of the castle, is a miller at work alongside his millstones and machinery. Over the centuries there have been several mills in Old Buckenham. The first documented mills date from the thirteenth century but only one mill remains. This red-brick towermill was built in 1818 and, although it was unused and derelict by the first half of the twentieth century, has been restored recently to its former glory. It is open to visitors on certain days in the year.

which has all but disappeared from the landscape. The left-hand character is said to be one of the local blacksmiths who lived on the green. The final person on the sign is a cricketer. The first recorded cricket match in the village was in 1817 when some of the inhabitants were fined for playing a match on a Sunday. Nearly a century later, a wealthy Australian stockbroker, Lionel Robinson, bought Old Buckenham Hall. In the grounds of the estate he created a cricket pitch, reportedly using turf specially brought over from Australia, and employed a former England captain as cricketing manager. The ground hosted six first-class cricket matches between 1912 and 1921 and is still used today as it is now the home to Old Buckenham Cricket Club.

The central figure in the three windows of the castle is a monk who on one side of the sign is writing at his desk and on the other is praying. He tells us of the twelfth-century Augustinian priory

Smart Money Secrets Is it time to switch your bank account? b Andrew A d h d d t personall fifinance analyst l t ffrom www.moneycomms.co.ukk by hagger iindependent

D

oes it annoy you that your bank doesn’t pay you interest when you’re in the black, or that it charges you the earth if you go slightly overdrawn? – If the answer’s yes then maybe it’s time to up sticks and sign up for a more suitable bank account. With the official Current Account Switch Service now bedded in, it’s much quicker and easier to take your custom elsewhere – just choose your new bank and they’ll look after the rest. The process will take a maximum 7 working days and there’s also a guarantee that you won’t incur any charges during the switch over. Too many of us have put up with sub-standard products and poor service for too long, but now it’s much less hassle to vote with your feet and switch to an account that mirrors the way you manage your money.

£1,500 or Tesco Bank 3% up to a maximum £3,000. For larger balances Santander 123 is tops, paying a very competitive 1.5% gross up to a maximum balance of £20,000. If you’re seeking a cheap debit card for use overseas then Metro Bank offers this facility for free in Europe whilst Nationwide Building Society is much cheaper than the main banks wherever you travel in the world. Picking the wrong bank when it comes to debit card costs abroad can cost far more than you’d imagine. Your two week summer holiday could easily see you shelling out an extra £50 or more in charges – for many of us that saving will more than outweigh the total interest you’ll earn on your bank account in a whole year.

Although each bank and building society has its own tariff and rate details clearly displayed in marketing literature, working out which account is best can be a big headache.

Yet for some of us, all we really ask is for the ability to talk to a human being at a UK call centre 24/7 and to receive a consistently good level of customer service. Current top performers for service continue to be First Direct and The Co-operative bank.

There is not one account that works out as the top choice for everybody, it’s more about weighing up the individual elements of an account that are most important to you.

The decision to switch is not something people undertake lightly or want to do on a regular basis, so it’s important to do your homework and pick an account that reflects the way you run your finances.

For some a low cost overdraft will be the priority, while for others interest on credit balances or a debit card offering low cost transactions abroad will be key. I’ve carried out some research to try and establish which accounts are strongest in each of the different areas. If it’s a cheap overdraft that’s most important, then take a look at First Direct (first £250 interest free), M&S Bank (first £100 interest free) or the FlexAccount from Nationwide Building Society. If you’re looking for interest on your credit balances, then consider TSB which pays 3% up to a maximum balance of

PART 8

The Stowaway cat In the last instalment, Su and her friend Jess discovered that Milly the cat had decided to join them on their trip from Sheffi ffield fi to the Norfolk coast… So there we were, trundling down the A1 to the seaside on a bright but cold morning between Christmas and New Year. My dear old estate car was on cracking form and my best friend Jess was snoring quietly in the passenger seat. What could possibly spoil this idyll? Well, for one thing, the word ‘seaside’ doesn’t carry much weight in late December, particularly as it was the windswept North Norfolk coast we were heading for. Thick woollies, gloves and voluminous waterproofs were piled up in the back of the car rather than buckets and spades. We were heading for Tony Campbell’s B&B; not as guests for a pleasant post-Christmas break, but to help him tidy the place up, redecorate and hopefully avoid his inevitable bankruptcy. How long we would stay was anyone’s guess. Straight on to Kings Lynn, then up the coast road, past Sandringham where the Royal Family goes to ease its Christmas hangovers (morning Ma’am!), then onwards to where the land dissolves into mud, the mud melts into the sea and the sea fades into the sky; where the winter visiting birds swoop mournfully back and forth across the endless cold grey expanse, searching…

little voice in my left ear saying, “I wish you wouldn’t do that, it makes me all giddy.” I swerved the other way and she cracked her head against mine and dug her sharp claws into my shoulder. “Owww!” I cried. I was in no mood for back-seat drivers. Milly rubbed her head against the back of my neck by way of an apology, and crooned: “You were leaving me, again. I get lonely and Muffin comes in and bullies me. I had to come – you need me.” Most of that was an exaggeration, if not a downright lie: a cat was the last thing we needed over the next few weeks. “You will be a perfect nuisance,” I said. “You will get in everyone’s way, bring fleas into the place, poo everywhere, then with a bit of luck escape into the muddy expanse and never be seen again.” It was unfair, but I was annoyed after taking so much trouble to set her up with a brand new nest next to the radiator which even had a red velvet cushion for her ladyship to rest her weary bod on. After doing absolutely nothing all day, how could she not be in perfect solitary bliss? Copyright Susan lidster

It was just after the point-of-no-return on our journey that we had discovered our famous stowaway. I was considering what to do about her as I rather belligerently swerved off the A1 at Newark, when I heard a quiet
