A

couple with a passion for East Anglian beer have set up Twisted Hops, an online shop that showcases the exceptional craft beers being produced by local breweries.

Sarah Giles and Lawrence Cooke moved to Harleston three years ago and have a healthy obsession with beer and how it’s made. “We love trying beers from different breweries and the craft beer scene,” says Sarah. “Lawrence's job came to an end in December 2020 due to

Covid-19, so we decided to take the plunge and set up Twisted Hops.

“East Anglian microbreweries are producing superb quality craft beers, with exciting styles and flavours, and we want to help them to become better known, and support them both locally and across the UK. Our aim is to also help people experience beer in new ways and think more about what they drink. In the future we'd love to have a physical shop where people could visit, have a brew while choosing their beers, or come to a tasting event.

“We stock lots of different craft beer styles, beer boxes, multipacks and there are gift options available too. For Father’s Day we have a special gift pack including local craft beers, a glass and a snack.

Lawrence also brews commercially, and we stock his beers in our online shops as well.

People Go ‘Wild’ For Local Book

A

book about the fascinating flora and fauna around Bungay is proving a huge success and has so far raised over £1,700 for Suffolk Wildlife Trust. ‘Wild About Bungay’, produced in memory of Jasmine Lingwood, who re-established the Bungay branch of Suffolk Wildlife Trust, contains around 250 beautiful colour photographs of plants and wildlife in and around Bungay, many of them taken by local photographer Frances Crickmore.

Chris Reeve, who with his brother Terry created the book in memory of their sister, Jasmine, said: “We are thrilled with the success of Wild About

Bungay so far. We have sold over 450 copies and we hope to raise over £2,000 overall. Our sister Jasmine was a tireless champion of wildlife and this book is a fitting tribute to her dedicated work. Time for a Friendly Chat?

C

an you spare a bit of time to become a telephone befriender?

This vital service from Age UK Norfolk is a lifeline for older people who may be lonely or isolated, and for some it will be the only person they speak to all week.

Even if you only have half an hour a week, you could support an older person by enjoying a joke, sharing an experience or completing the quiz the service provides. One older person said about their befriender: “We get on so well even though I’m 91 and she is in her 20s. I make her laugh and she

makes me laugh too. We talk about all sorts of things; houses, TV, gardens. I think she’s lovely and I do look forward to our chats.”

For the befriender, the service is flexible, can be done from home and at a time that suits everyone. A befriender said: “It’s lovely when somebody says thank you for ringing me. I enjoy chatting to people; they have some great stories to tell.”

The cost of the call can be reclaimed. Volunteers will need email and access to a computer/tablet, as the induction and follow-up a month later are carried out by Teams (similar to Zoom). This is free, straightforward and full instructions are provided. The telephone interview and induction take place during office hours. Most telephone befrienders are women and more are needed…as well as men.

magine taking a bath with a sea sponge! You will most likely conjure up an image of a traditional Greek honeycomb sponge, with its large pores resembling a Swiss cheese… perhaps you had one as a child.

Sponges excel at cleaning, exfoliating and polishing the skin in a way that hands — or a cotton flannel — cannot rival. With their open texture, sponges build soap lather, while their absorbent qualities help with rinsing. Most of all, they make any shower or bath supremely pleasurable, as children discover at bath time and in paddling pools!

Despite the soft feel of the honeycomb sponge, it’s remarkably

durable, often outlasting a year of bath duty to offer further use as a household cleaning tool. Finally — after providing wonderful washing and cleaning experiences — it will biodegrade when discarded, leaving you with a clean conscience.

There are many different species of sea sponge. About a dozen of these are harvested, but none from cold British waters. At Natural Spa Supplies, with our emphasis on traditional sourcing, our sponges are collected by trained divers in Greece, who are also marine conservationists.

Harvesting the sponges by hand ensures the root is left firmly in place, allowing regeneration of the same sponge.

ere comes summer! Nothing to do outside but relax with a glass of your favourite tipple and listen to the gentle hum of insects as they go about their busy lives.

Not all bugs and beasties are bad, in fact many are positively good, everything has its place in nature!

The secret is to get the balance right, nature-friendly gardening doesn’t mean simply leaving the garden to do its own thing (although this would give you more deckchair time!) it’s about encouraging beneficial creatures which provide a useful service such as helping to reduce pest numbers.

Food is key, by growing plants which are rich in nectar or provide seed and berries your garden will become more attractive to a whole host of willing workers. Bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects are top of the wish list, as without them seeds and fruit will not form. Next on the list are predators such as ladybirds, lacewings and hoverflies whose larvae consume hundreds of aphids. Even annoying wasps do a fantastic job of caterpillar and aphid removal!

Widen your appeal to wildlife by siting bird baths and feeders in your garden, keep them topped up and you’ll not only get to enjoy some fascinating bird antics, but

they in return will polish off more bugs, slugs and snails. Water in the garden brings in other friends such as hedgehogs, but do remember to provide for your helpers all year round to stop them abandoning you for a better neighbour!

The following plants give colour and interest while also attracting insects and birds. For easy and reliable shrubs try buddleia (aptly called Butterfly Bush), Viburnum tinus (evergreen and winter-flowering), cotoneaster and pyracantha (flowers of both attract bees and their berries are enjoyed by birds in autumn), plus heathers, hebes and English lavenders. The flower border should include foxgloves and ajuga for spring feasts, then scabious, astrantia,

echinacea, achillea and eryngiums, some of these are so nectar-rich that the bees fall asleep on the flowers! To keep the bee food going into autumn grow sedums, verbenas and asters.

On the veg plot try sweet peas with runner beans for good pollination, and limnanthes (Poached Egg Plant) for blackfly control by hoverfly larvae. Nature is amazing, so make it work for you!

Now put down that drink, there’s planting, watering, deadheading, pruning, grass cutting and weed pulling to be done!

Access for all — Consider cutting a small hole 13cm by 13cm in your fence to allow hedgehogs to get around easily.

VEGAN RECIPE

Vegan Chocolate Orange Cake

This sumptuous chocolate cake is incredibly easy and quick to make.

It’s particularly delicious served hot with ice cream.

Makes: 16 squares Time to prepare: 15 minutes Time to cook: 40 minutes

INGREDIENTS 300g demerara sugar 100g vegan dark chocolate 400g self-raising flour 200ml rapeseed oil 430ml water 2 tbsp grated orange rind 3 tbsp squeezed orange juice 2 tsp baking powder ½ tsp cider vinegar Pinch of salt

Tip:

Cut into squares when cool, freeze and take out as needed.

METHOD Pre-heat the oven to 1800C. Lightly grease a large oven proof dish, approximately 22cm x 30cm. Melt the chocolate in a bowl over boiling water.

Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl and blend thoroughly. Pour the mixture into the greased dish, place in the centre of the oven and cook for 40 minutes.

CAKE RECIPE

Baked Strawberry & Raspberry Cheesecake Baked cheesecake needs time to prepare and mature, but it’s worth it!

This one is topped with strawberries in a raspberry sauce, a great way to improve early season strawberries, or supermarket buys that turn out to be less than tasty!

Serves 12 – 14 512kcal/ 28g carbs per serving

INGREDIENTS Base: 250g digestive biscuits, finely crushed 1 tablespoon caster sugar 150g butter, melted Cake: 6 large eggs, separated

Add a few chopped strawberries to the cheesecake mix before baking for a surprise treat!

100g caster sugar 1 heaped tablespoon cornflour 500g cream cheese 250g mascarpone 150ml sour cream 150ml double cream 2 teaspoons vanilla extract Grated zest of a lemon Topping: 200-250g fresh strawberries 300g raspberries (frozen are ideal) 50g icing sugar Lemon juice (optional) Icing sugar to dust

METHOD 1. Mix together the biscuits, sugar and melted butter, then press into the base of a 23cm springform cake tin. Chill for at least half an hour. Preheat the oven to 170oC. Whisk the egg 24

whites to stiff peaks. In another large bowl, mix together the sugar and cornflour, then add the cream cheese and mascarpone, beating until combined.

2. Add the two creams and the vanilla extract, beating constantly, then add the lemon zest. Fold through the egg whites, then pour the mix onto the chilled biscuit base. Bake in the oven for about 60-90 minutes, until golden brown and just set. Switch off the oven and leave for a further two hours. Put the cooled cake in the fridge overnight to mature.

3. Next day, prepare the topping.

Put the raspberries and icing sugar in a sieve and press through to make a sauce. Add lemon juice to taste. In a bowl, mix

together the strawberries with the raspberry sauce. Run a knife around the cake to release it from its tin. Dust with icing sugar, then pile the berries on top, reserving surplus sauce to serve on the side.

The un-topped cake will keep in the fridge for three to four days.

BROAD BEANS

Let’s be ‘broad’ minded!

T

hese unassuming, but delicious, legumes are a summer star! Best eaten young when tender, broad beans have a fresh, creamy texture, making them a perfect match for salty foods and bold flavours. But remember to remove the skins if they are tough.

Here are 6 easy ways to add their vibrant green punch to your diet.

Snack attack!

A moreish alternative to crisps or nuts. Heat about 1/2 inch of oil in a large pan and fry shelled broad beans until golden brown and crispy (about 10 minutes). Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. Leave to cool and toss in salt or spices.

Deeply dippy Steam broad beans for 3-5 minutes and d leave to cool. Whizzz in a food processsor with some fresh garlic, mint, parsley, olive oil, chilli and d seasoning.

Perfe ect as a dip with pitta brread, celery and tomatoes, or as a

sandwich filler. A great way to use older beans.

Pesto pronto Steam broad beans for 3 mins and run under ice-cold water to stop them cooking. Fry some garlic and a few anchovies until golden, stir through the broad beans, then crush in a pestle and mortar with Parmesan, lemon juice and oil.

Superb stirred through pasta, or even spread on toast!

Raw power Young broad beans are sweet and tender and can be eaten raw, pods and all! But if you prefer them podded, throw them into all manner of salads with bold flavours such as fennel and beetroot, or just eat them as they are for a healthy snack and a massive vitamin boost.

BBQ beauties Forget about podding – this charred broad bean recipe is delicious and fun. Brush young whole pods with olive oil, cook on the bbq for 5-8 minutes until they are charred on both sides.

The beauty of smarter choices Caroline Topping looks at more ways we can refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle and rot

T

he above has become a bit of a mission for me. A couple of years ago I started thinking about my mother’s dish cloths. I have no idea why I used washing up sponges when I set up home.

Ease, maybe, or my partner’s influence on me. But seeing how many germs they harbour, how dirty they become and knowing they have to be thrown into my incineration bin has made them a ‘no go’.

So I started knitting my own cotton ones, which can be used, washed with my other laundry and used again until they start to fall to pieces…when they can then be re-knitted. For stubborn washing up that needs something more rigid, I use a hard scraper and some of my friends use a piece of coconut shell.

Moving on to deodorant, some time ago I put a request on Facebook ‘What do people use for deodorant which has longevity, is better for the planet and uses minimal packaging?’ I was pointed in the direction of ‘Pitrok’ natural crystal deodorant

stick. I have to admit the £5 price tag did make my eyes water, but I’m glad I made the change.

That container of Pitrok has served me for nearly two years, saved me approximately 10 cans of alternative spray deodorant (my previous item of choice) and left me with only one small plastic container to dispose of.

A purchase I will be definitely be repeating when it finally expires.

My latest find and, again, something which has previously accumulated a lot of waste, is my daily skin care products. I cleanse, tone and moisturise twice daily, so that’s three items of packaging I’m left with every couple of months. I emailed the manufacturer of my current product of choice and asked them to collect this packaging in and recycle, but they replied they had no plans currently to do that.

So I found a company called ‘Beauty Kitchen’. The product is made in England, they don’t test on animals, they take back all their packaging, wash and reuse it. This is a total win-win-win for

me and the product feels great on my skin. Finally, I have to say that I love my ‘Who Gives a Crap’ toilet paper. They donate 50% of their profits to help build toilets and improve sanitation in the developing world. It feels strong, lasts ages and no plastic packaging.

uring lockdown, art educators Matthew Magnus and Shelly O’Brien established Norfolk Threads as a community interest company, with the aim of improving people’s wellbeing through art and engagement with the local environment and creative technology.

Norfolk Threads has recently launched its first community art project, which is completely free to take part in and open to everyone. “The Leaf Project encourages people to engage with nature and get creative with photography, drawing and textiles,” says Matthew.

“It showcases what Norfolk Threads is really about; we mix

a photo of your drawing and send it to Norfolk Threads via email, or our Facebook page. We will stitch your drawing out on our digital embroidery machine as a unique piece of textile art and send it back to you in the post.”

LOCAL HISTORY

Memories of Thorndon Local historian, Dennis Cross from Diss, shares with us his fascinating collection of old postcards, focusing on a different village in every issue.

This time, we take a walk down memory lane in Thorndon.

Kerrison Reformatory School for Boys was established in 1856 by Sir EC Kerrison (Baronet), and taken over by the county in 1887. The boys worked the 200-acre estate and had a brass band with over 40 members.

They can be seen here in 1912 at one of the many local functions they played at.

Thorndon Public Elementary School was built in 1874 on the site of the old workhouse, at a cost of £450. It was enlarged in 1911, costing a further £226, for 120 children. At the time of this 1910 postcard, Charles Weston was headmaster.

In 1910, Thorndon had a grocer, draper, bootmaker, patent medicine vendor and ironmonger, all run from the Post Office by Herbert Cracknell. He is seen here with his staff.

This 1910 postcard shows boys and teachers from the Kerrison Reformatory School for Boys peeling osier willow. The boys also learned carpentry, shoemaking and land work. Mr and Mrs Frederick Gill were master and matron. The school has been closed for some years and is now being converted into housing.

This early multi-view postcard would have been on sale in the village shop to advertise the postcards available.

p in 1905,, The Black Horse pub with horse and carts waiting for their owners. Harry Balls was the landlord, and the population at this time was 572.

The pub is still open today.

This post mill on main street, shown here in 1908, was reputed to be one of the tallest in Suffolk at 55ft, and its round house was struck by lightning in 1923. The mill belonged to the Lock family for four generations of men, each with the christian name Nathan. The mill is now a private house.

The Norfolk Postcard Club meets regularly in Trowse in Norwich and new members are very welcome. Meetings have currently been suspended. Dennis is also the author of several local history books that can be purchased by contacting him direct.

Gospel from The Saints

S

o, what did you go for first; seeing family and friends – catching up with all your special people at cafes and restaurants?

Or had you been looking forward to entertaining at home once more? Did you throw as much caution as is legally allowed to the wind, or are you still careful – reticence being so ingrained that it rules the day?

Being allowed to reunite outside (no more than six) was a good entree. Chatting freely with plenty of distance between us and a welcoming, warm breeze caressing our every sentence, we practised being at ease in the company of others again. For so long we have followed the conditioning to basically avoid other people and concentrate on our personal safety.

Will you delight in travelling away from home (when we finally can), or have we learned to value our surroundings far more and be satisfied with simpler reunions – less being more when you’ve experienced a year of definitely less?!

I wonder how many of our lockdown habits will persist? As life inevitably accelerates, will we shed our appreciation of the small things, the details we considered and recognised as significant contributors to our happiness?

As human beings, will we be able to contain our lust for more and, well – I’m afraid to say – more and more thereafter?

How overwhelming, or at least noticeable, has the increased

traffic and general hustle and bustle been? Did you wrap yourself in the burgeoning cacophony, thinking “I’ve missed this,” or did some part of you think “oh no, too much, both now and in general”?

What about the time we have at our disposal? Does a wealth of opportunity engender a sense of ‘time richness’, or has the rate at which this precious commodity slips through our fingers speeded up again? ‘So much to do and catch up on’, now that we are allowed. Many people found a slower pace soothing. It gave time to appreciate, to savour, to live. The belief that more is more remains hugely influential.

Doing is important, working, or at least activity, is laudable.

This is magnetic and hugely convincing to our psyche. Going slow is unproductive, slothful, less worthy, to be avoided… hmmm! This poses an interesting question; is more, be it anything – acquiring, socialising, exercising, working, general experiencing – all done at a smart pace, superior to less action that is valued, treasured even? We acknowledge that consumption is the addiction hastening our downfall. Yet will we let go – especially now we know that we can?

And, finally, as the novelty wears off, will a lack of restriction smear the shine on our desires?

Once it’s a case of ‘go ahead, help yourself’, will all that we have longed for sparkle quite so much?

L

ockdown, personal loss and suffering have not thwarted the spirits of Bertie Emes-Ellis, who simply lives to give. Her smile is wide; her eyes gleam and there is an endless stream of hope and love pouring from her heart.

Although Bertie has special needs and resides in supported living accommodation in Norwich, the challenges throughout her 31 years have been borne with inner strength and resource. It has given rise to joy on the outside and a childlike faith within.

She has put her life on hold to comfort and encourage young and old, including three close friends who have died during or before the COVID-19 pandemic. Her mother, Sallie Wright, founder of a Norfolk children’s charity, takes up the story: “I have watched as Bertie interacts with people as a willing vessel of love. She laid down her life caring for dying friends, while feeling the full impact of lockdown for five months last year, unable to see family or interact with outside activities — although she still attended online church meetings.

“Bertie was born with Down’s Syndrome, and although she has learning difficulties she is receptive, communicative and her spirit is not disabled, and we should not limit those like her because of what we see or think.

"Bertie (short for Roberta after

her maternal grandmother) is a triplet with five siblings, including a brother who also has special needs. Growing up in a home of love over trial and faith over fear has been an empowering building block for her life.

“She now lives in a bungalow in the community alongside the elderly and vulnerable and raises staff morale. She is known to be bright and happy: dancing and twirling; singing loud songs; saying loud prayers and spreading faith.

“Her compassion was evident as two housemates lived out their last days. She prayed, cared, and gave.

With hope and happiness, she wholeheartedly shared her simple faith with its values and truths and through bible stories and DVDs. Staff and families caring for one of her late friends said Bertie made a difference to their lives during this time and throughout the pandemic lockdown.

“Her compassion and love have been there since childhood.

Growing up in church she would always display kindness and acceptance; there were no judgments or reservations. When the drug addicts and homeless people came and sat in the back pews, Bertie readily embraced them with huge hugs which had a big impact on them.

“I knew there would be difficulties, especially with education needs, but after her

birth I read: ‘Angel Unaware.’ The book tells the compelling story of Roy Rogers (known as the ‘Lone Ranger’ in the fifties) and his wife Dale, whose daughter was born with serious health issues as well as Down’s Syndrome.

Life Through a Lens!

Art writer Kristy Campbell showcases three talented local photographers who are pushing creative boundaries.

A

common theme of my art column seems to be me encouraging the reader to capture small moments. Over the past year, there has certainly been a rise in attending to the little things and celebrating the anythings!

Following on from National Photography Month (May), I am dedicating this column to a hand-picked selection of local experts, who have kindly granted us insight into the development of a professional photographer.

This iconic trio have mastered the technical magic of the lens, describing how they go about seizing the moments in between, telling us just why it is so important to continue adding to our archives of notions and motions occurring in and around the every day.

their master’s degrees at Norwich University of the Arts. While connected by their alma mater and their knowledge of skill, style and photographers alike, they each maintain a novel practice spanning imagery for bold and lively commercial projects, and pausing, securing and appreciating the complex lives of people.

On becoming a photographer Photography has proven to be a valuable resource, or outlet, for enriching understandings and for communicating explorations of matter that cannot be expressed otherwise. Through her crossover of creative paths from Graphic Design to Photography, Smith demonstrates how her immersion in visual information throughout her career spurred her on to develop and fabricate inspired documentary material of her own design, reflecting:

“Photography is my creative medium for processing and distilling information; it helps me to make sense of the issues that concern and intrigue me. It’s a way of forcing me to explore and intellectualise life’s challenges and communicate my conclusions.”

Morgan took hold of the camera in a venture towards selfdiscovery during a time of personal limits and boundaries. From here she found a portal through portraiture, a territory where she could nurture herself mentally and physically.

Patel’s interest in photography stemmed from curiosity; he began learning about and adapting to technological advancements inspired by his creatively ambitious social circle, from which he drew closer to realising the possibilities available via the lens. He tells us about his interest in ‘the usual’: “I try to focus my work on subjects with whom I have some form of genuine connection…with whom I am somehow authentically engaged, sharing an experience.”

On collaboration Patel describes the importance of collaboration, recounting how it can “open your eyes to areas of culture and creativity that you may not have immediate access to,” and therefore “forces me to rethink my work in a way I could not do on my own.”

beyond one’s limits. While the pandemic has put limitations on collaborations, our trio have managed to stay inspired by looking to the works of other designers and makers. They have shared a short list of people who inspire them: Andreas Gurksy, Andrej Krementschouk, Nadav Kandar, Ori Gersht, Masahisa Fukase, and Martin Parr.

The technical Visibility! While it may seem that everything is viewed from a screen in this age of technology, try not to limit yourself to social media outlets. As mentioned above, collaboration is a great way of making your work more tangible, helping to foster a presence within networks of like-minded creatives. Keeping a portfolio both in print and online will prepare you for a host of situations and may encourage collaboration with others outside your surroundings.

Make yourself discoverable online through a website and a spread of works across different social platforms for a range of audiences.

When it comes to taking photos, our photographers have tried and tested a vast collection of equipment, from iPhones and disposable cameras, to full-blown Nikon kits. There is, of course, a process to finishing a series or shot, and Smith has hinted at Lightroom, Photoshop and InDesign as her go-to programmes for fine-tuned edits. However, the process will differ greatly between 48

photographers. Patel tells us how he has become quite sentimental about his cameras, building an attachment to the production process, reliving the feel of the “manual, twisty, clunky control dials” in his interview.

Projects Morgan is currently involved with a host of exciting projects, including a recent commission with The Conscious Candy Company. She recalls having the freedom to be playful with the products and explore possibilities for the brand’s visual strategy.

Smith discusses a forthcoming conceptual work of hers, touching on the current environmental crisis. “All Fall Down is the study of a landscape that straddles both comprehension and disbelief.

What appears terra firma today has already begun its decline towards ‘nowhere’ tomorrow.

The land is literally disappearing before our eyes, creating a tangible sense of both physical and psychological disturbance.” On show: Cley Contemporary, 2021.

Patel has an ongoing collaboration with pop artist Matt Robinson, in which Robinson modifies Patel’s works and prints through his painting practice, forging a literal abstract fastening of media, further expanding the possible access points of the work.

Advice Photography acts as a mediator for these remarkable individuals’ thoughts, the camera provides a vessel in which they can compose ideas and begin a process of realisation.

o, how will your ‘re-entry’ be? In extremis, you will have acquired a darling little lockdown puppy whose experience has been wall to wall human company.

Attention-rich, real-life-situationpoor, it is now your responsibility to help your dog adjust to the approaching normality – and this might be challenging.

For puppies, there is a crucial optimal window in which to expose them to as many stimuli as possible. While the brain is still plastic, they can absorb experiences and become well adjusted and capable of coping with what life among us humans is likely to offer. A dog deprived of these opportunities will find it more difficult to cope. Care, consideration and patience will pay off. Don’t expect too much too quickly, and you’lll definitely be on the right track.

We elcoming visitors to our homes once more presents the perrfect opportunity to remind people that they should ignore the dog when they arrive, and only say hello once it’s com mpletely relaxed.* When out walking g, with social distancing ingrrained in all of us, it should feel easier

to ask people to refrain from touching your dog without asking first.

If you are no longer working from home, the day-long company and hustle and bustle your dog has become accustomed to will change, so introduce as many aspects of this new routine as soon as possible. It’s not difficult to understand how upsetting it could be for your dog to be catapulted from long lazy breakfast time and leisurely walks, to a snatched whizz round the block, followed by total silence as they are left in an empty house.

If you do leave your dog at home while you go to work, it’s essential that they are not left for more than three hours at a stretch before someone comes to at least let them into the garden

and provide company for a while, preferably taking them for a walk or play. A young dog or puppy shouldn’t be left for long at all. It’s entirely wrong and very unkind to leave them alone. A gradual and careful build up to being left must be carried out as they mature, something I can only hope some ‘lockdown owners’ took on board.

Quite honestly, if a dog is to be left day after day, proper ‘day-care’ must be organised.

At The Globe, turn left onto The Street towards All Saints Church. Turn right just before the church down Roger’s Lane. After about 100 yards, turn left down the tree-lined track though the woods. Keep on the main path, and cross a stream on a plank bridge further along.

At the field, go straight across and at the boundary go over a plank bridge and continue along the path of this field until you come to the Boudicca Way. Turn left along the track and follow the Boudicca Way signs, going straight for some distance.

Pass over a plank bridge, a pond on the left where seating is available, and continue slightly right past a cottage on the left. Continue straight on through a kissing gate until the end of the track where you leave the Boudicca Way and turn left down the path that becomes a track leading to Market Lane.

Turn left into Market Lane and continue along the road which then becomes Brooke Road and then The Street, using the footpaths along these last two roads. Continue all the way down The Street, passing the Alms Houses, now called Trinity Hospital and All Saints Church, until you reach The Globe.

Turtle Doves – the dwindling sound of summer

F

or many people, the gentle rolling purr of the turtle dove is evocative of the splendour of high summer, but this once familiar sound of the sunlit country lanes of rural Norfolk is rapidly being lost. Once common around every village in Eastern England, the turtle dove’s last surviving heartlands is the south of Norfolk.

In much of the countryside, this migratory bird has been replaced by the slightly larger, and resident, collared dove. But the turtle dove’s disappearance has little to do with its fawn coloured cousin and is more about the destructive nature of humanity. Despite this, you may be lucky enough to see a turtle dove this summer, although centuries of hunting across continental Europe has led it into secretive habits and it’s quick to take flight if you approach. A small, slim dove with a thin neck and protruding round head, its wings are neatly patterned with light orange-

brown and black, and it has a blue-grey panel that’s visible in flight. The head and breast is a soft subtle pink, with adults bearing black bars on their necks.

The turtle dove feeds almost exclusively on weed seeds and, although associated with arable parts of the county, it prefers varied and mixed habitats.

tidy. Lanes have their verges cut before flowers can take to seed, elsewhere herbicides are freely used on ‘unsightly’ weeds, and hedgerows are cut down each autumn, preventing them becoming tall and unkempt, which turtle doves prefer. Being quite shy, quiet corners of our countryside are hard for it to find too.

Despite this, all is not lost!

Several studies have identified

the bird’s requirements, and conservation organisations such as the Norfolk Wildlife Trust have been working with farmers, landowners and other stakeholders to improve its favoured habitats. The now famous Knepp Estate re-wildling project saw two singing males in 1999 increase to 16 in 2020, proving that with proper consideration the turtle dove can be saved as a UK breeding bird.

However, as with many aspects of conservation, it takes an international effort to achieve lasting success. The migration of the turtle dove takes it on a perilous journey to sub-Saharan Africa and back. If the birds escape the mist nets along the coast of the Mediterranean they are then met by the hazard of tens of thousands of guns. In Malta alone the slaughter claims 100,000 birds, with 800,000 shot legally each spring in Spain.

In addition, both legal and illegal glue traps take countless numbers across France and Italy.

Bravo Bungay!

B

ungay has been officially recognised for its fantastic good neighbour scheme, which was set up in March 2020 to provide much-needed help and a good dose of old fashioned kindness during the pandemic.

Bungay Emergency Community Support Group has risen to the many challenges of the past year, and its volunteers have so far undertaken over 2,200 tasks, such as delivering shopping and prescriptions, posting parcels, doing odd jobs and giving advice, to over 450 residents of Bungay, Broome, Ditchingham, Earsham and Homersfield.

At the end of 2020, the organisation received a muchdeserved award “In Recognition of Outstanding Service to the

Community in Suffolk during the Covid-19 Pandemic,” from Clare Countess of Euston, HM Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk. It was also signed by Bridget McIntyre MBE, High Sheriff of Suffolk.

Grateful resident, Pat Blakeburn, said: “I was offered this superb service last year and took advantage of it. I telephoned to ask if someone could do my shopping and within an hour or two a friendly volunteer turned up and collected my shopping list, money and shopping bags. My shopping arrived a little later.”

The group has now been renamed Bungay Community Support, and will continue to provide the same vital service for locals, but also befriending and linking people with other organisations in Bungay.

he face you look at in the mirror today has travelled down a long and winding road from childhood to adulthood. Our skin is exposed to environmental stress on a daily basis, which means it’s the most telling indicator of our age.

As a woman enters perimenopause, usually in her early 40s, oestrogen production begins to decline and this also means a loss of collagen — the essential protein that puts the bounce in your bones, muscles and blood and which comprises three quarters of your skin and a third of the protein in your body.

An appeal to reunite the extraordinary women who chose a life of service

o you have any Wrens in your family? I’m not talking about the tiny feathered variety in the garden, but the indomitable women who joined the Women’s Royal Naval Service; and specifically those who joined up between 1946 and 1981 and did their basic training at Training Depot Burghfield/HMTE Burghfield/HMTE Dauntless/HMS Dauntless/Reading.

Dauntless Divisional Photos is a nationwide project, in collaboration with the Association of Wrens, to gather divisional photographs and memories from those training days, and also to reunite women with old friends, share anecdotes and relive exciting moments.

The Women’s Royal Naval Service was formed in 1917 and early recruits served in WWI. Disbanded in 1919, it was revived

20 years later as the world was once more plunged into conflict.

In 1993, the service branch became part of the Royal Navy.

W

hen the Queen turned 95 on 21 April 2021, she served as a very public reminder of how much longer, as a society, we are living. In her own family, four generations are now all alive at the same time, from the Queen herself, down to her latest great-grandchild. An increasing number of families now find themselves in the same position, which has implications for financial planning.

As a nonagenarian, Her Majesty is far from alone. The number of people over 90 rose by 44% between 2008 and 2018, according to the report ‘Estimates of the very old, including centenarians, UK: 2002 to 2018’, published online by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in September 2019.

We are now witnessing a phenomenon where baby boomers – those born in the post-war era and in retirement – represent the wealthiest generation in society.

However, while they enjoy the fruits of their labour, they are sandwiched between elderly parents facing the challenges of old age and children struggling with the hangover of university debts and rising house prices.

For those born after the Second World War and in the 1950s, the economy of their working years was benign and kind to them, but it was less so for those born in the 1980s and 1990s – the so-called ‘millennials’ – who are finding it harder to get jobs and onto the property ladder.

While our children are struggling with their finances,

that people may need to start reassessing how they plan for the later stages of life.

Traditionally, wealth has passed from one generation to the next upon death. However, intergenerational wealth management challenges that notion and looks at how families can use their wealth more collaboratively to support each other during their lifetimes. This offers legitimate estate planning and tax mitigation opportunities, while providing the much-needed assistance to help alleviate the financial burdens of everyday life.

A Guide to a ‘Good’ Divorce’ Amanda Maruca, Partner at Spire Solicitors LLP, advises couples going through lockdown break-ups

S

ince the first lockdown in 2020, couples and families have spent more time together than usual. In many cases, this has been a catalyst for break-ups already on the cards, especially if normally separate routines masked problems.

Lawyers often talk about ‘divorce day’ in January, but this year has been different due to the pressures and stresses of Covid-19.

While troubled couples may have tried to stand together to offer support with homeschooling at the start of the year, the reality is that proximity exacerbates tensions, and with children now back at school lots of couples are seeing this as the right time to start the divorce process.

Currently, there are only three grounds for divorce: the marriage has broken down irretrievably through adultery, unreasonable behaviour, or desertion; two years of separation, where both parties agree to divorce; and five years of separation, where the consent of the other party is not required.

Couples seeking a no-fault divorce will have to wait until Autumn 2021, and under the new legislation couples can make joint divorce applications, alongside the current option for one party to initiate the process.

Meanwhile, it is vital that couples receive the support they need to navigate the process and help them avoid a recriminatory

approach — even more important when children are involved. So, what can you do to achieve a ‘Good Divorce’?

• Communication – sit down and talk to your spouse, if safe to do so, or with the help of a mediator or counsellor.

• Support – talking to family or friends, or a counsellor, about how you feel.

• Choose a process that supports your goals – the court process may result in more conflict in the future.

• Advice – meet with a solicitor who is a member of Resolution.

They can advise on your options, assist in the negotiation of your settlement and draft documents to record your agreement. An independent financial adviser can also look at your options

for perhaps raising a mortgage, investing a lump sum to produce replacement income for the future and on pension sharing — very often a feature of many divorce settlements.

Divorce can be hard and stressful, and particularly so in the current crisis. But it serves a crucial role in allowing people to move on from unhappy and unhealthy relationships, and can offer a new beginning and increased happiness.
