Welcome

I think I can safely say we’re all going to be busy bees in June and July with so many village fetes, boot sales, festivals and carnivals taking place in our region. Our Village Notice Board pages are bursting with places to go and things to do, so make sure you keep your magazine handy. The newest addition to the VP family is Queenie – our 1976 VW camper – in-keeping with our vintage/retro office theme. Give us a wave if you see us driving round the villages at the many events we already have in our diary. It’s going to be a busy summer! We’re loving our latest Instagram tags and I’m pleased to print pics of one of our youngest, and one of our oldest (but young at heart) VP girls! A special mention also has to go to talented local photographer Ian Trice for his impressive local shots of all things Wymondham. mondham.

Queenie

If music is your thing you’ll be spoilt for choice this summer with huge artists rocking up at all the top venues in the area. We’ve got several pairs of tickets up for grabs so don’t miss the opportunity to be a winner and enter our fab competitions now! I’m delighted to share several exclusive “Village People offers”, so whether it’s money off a local pub meal, cash back on a new car, £500 off estate agent fees, free wine at the Royal Norfolk Show, we have it in this issue! Be sure to read from cover to cover so you don’t miss anything. We’re back at the end of July so for now, bring on the sun! Feel free to get in touch with your comments and do follow us on Instagram – @vpmagazine – to get a sneak peak at life behind the scenes here at VP HQ. The revamp to boost community facilities at St. Peter’s Church, Swainsthorpe, is almost complete following the opening of a new, locallyfunded pathway. The pathway provides safe access to the new church facilities, which have been part of a major fundraising project by the people of Swainsthorpe over the last five years – in particular for

the Project Idea Group, also known as the “PIGs”. Thanks to the project the church can now also be used as a community centre, so Swainsthorpe is hosting a “The Sound of Musicals” evening on June 20, performed by The Upper Octave. dEFIbRIllatOR IN FORNcEtt phONEbOx Forncett St Peter has joined the many rural villages to have a public-access defibrillator in place for the community. It has taken eight months of planning and fundraising to get the life-saving equipment installed, and the site chosen is a redundant telephone box in the village – newly transformed with a lick of bright red paint. A series of CPR and defibrillator awareness sessions will now be held for villagers to attend. More information can be found at www.forncett.info

Puttin’ On The Ritz

One of the must-see stars of Strictly Come Dancing, Siberian beauty Kristina Rihanoff is set to bring her dancefloor prowess to Norwich as a hit 2014 show gets a new look 12 months on.

P

uttin’ On The Ritz wowed Norwich Theatre Royal audiences during its last visit with a mix of showbiz style and panache, celebrating the golden era of movie musicals. Now the show is getting a revamp and reboot ahead of a summer return to the city on July 21 to 25. The show’s return brings with it a popular duo – well known to fans of Saturday night TV – Strictly Come Dancing’s Kristina Rihanoff and Robin Windsor. “It features some great music which is fantastic to dance to,” said Kristina, who cannot wait to be a part of the production. “It is a show that Robin and I are looking forward to. There is a lot of style in the show and it will be great to perform in.” Kristina grew up in Siberia in a musical household and her passion for Latin dance was stirred when she began studying at dance school. Following a string of championships, Kristina started teaching at the tender age of 16, yet still went on to gain a Master’s degree in

Tourism and Hospitality alongside her busy dance schedule. In 2001, she moved to Washington, USA, where she turned professional and competed all over the world, from the traditional ornate setting of Blackpool Tower, through to the highly-competitive South African Championships. Kristina’s joined the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing in 2008, and has since been paired up with political journalist and TV presenter John Sergeant, rap personality DJ Goldie, Coronation Street star Jimi Mistry and actor Colin Salmon. The show has become a huge part of her life, but she still finds time to work on various other projects. How does she do it? “Dancing is all part of my lifestyle and I am also very lucky because I really love what I do,” Kristina explains. “If it was just a job, you would get to five o’clock and not care but I really enjoy doing what I do, working on these projects, dancing, and I also do some work talking to people about their diet. It is fantastic.” And, one of the great joys of Puttin’ On The Ritz for Kristina will be working with her Strictly co-star, Robin, once again. “We have been dancing together now for about five years.

Starting to work with him was one of the best things that ever happened to me. We never argue and we really bring out the best in each other. When we get together, we really want to push the envelope and do the best that we can.”

Puttin’ On The Ritz comes to Norwich Theatre Royal from Tuesday 21 to Saturday 25 July. Tickets are available from the box office on 01603 630000 or book online at

Six medieval village churches in rural Norfolk are getting colourful this July

he Blossom and Yarn Festival will be quite unlike anything you have experienced before. Teams of knitters have been busy producing thousands of small, knitted squares which are being crafted together, along with hundreds of other knitted items, to create themed scenes in wool.

Each church will be immersed in its own theme – Christmas, Easter, wedding, christening, harvest or remembrance – and the displays will be enhanced with flowers. Visitors’senses will be aroused by a skilful blend of sights, sounds and smells.

The six churches are part of The Wayland Group of Parishes and their rector is The Rev. Bob Nichols. The congregations of the six villages worship together every Sunday, using each church building in rotation, and they are combining their fundraising efforts to put on the Blossom and Yarn Festival. All the villages are pretty and peaceful, and are nestled in beautiful Norfolk farmland.

The artistic director is Lois Gill, a celebrated craftswoman, gardener and floral artist. She is a NAFAS (National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies) qualified national demonstrator, speaker, teacher and judge. Lois’s talent has been recognised

Out & About

Brian’s Wine of the Moment This month customers have joined winemaker Jürgen Wagner, from Celler de Capçanes and enjoyed dinner at the Oaksmere hotel near Diss. The aim was to sample through their whole range accompanied by some great food prepared by Alan Dann. Alan who has worked with the Roux brothers, and numerous other Michelin Starred chefs, did not disappoint. Celler de Capçanes is one of the leading estates of Montsant and arguably one of the great producers of Kosher wine. Their story began in 1995 when the Jewish community of Barcelona asked Capçanes if they could produce a Kosher wine, and kosher wine is all Capçanes might still be doing if Jürgen who was working at Clos Mogador in Priorat, hadn’t joined Angel Teixido to take advantage of this new investment and equipment. This investment meant they could utilise the high quality wines from the old vine Garnacha and Carinena grown in the local villages to make the non-kosher Merlot based Vall del Calas and Cabernet based Costers del Gravet. Capçanes and others around them are making serious wines and the reputation of Montsant wines is spreading, both abroad and at home. Montsant won’t remain so humble forever, already at the high end, there is the Capçanes Cabrida, an old-vine Garnacha that rivals much of the output from Priorat and the rest of Spain in cellar potential.

Wymondham Carnival 2015 t

After the resounding success of last year’s “Wymondham-on-sea” event, the Wymondham Business Group have been busy planning 2015’s carnival.

he event, which last time saw over 6,000 people line the streets of Wymondham, is to be held on Saturday 25 July. It promises to be an even bigger and more exciting spectacle this year, as the town gets set for all the fun and frolics of “Wymondham-on-the-farm”. “The team have been working away behind the scenes since the day after last year’s event,” said Tony Holden, Chair of the Events Committee. “The buzz we all felt when it worked so well encouraged us to put on a bigger and better show in 2015.” Carnival day itself is just the culmination of a number of events that will be going on in the run-up to the event. Auditions for Wymondham’s Got Talent are underway, where local, budding superstars showcase their talents. The prizefund has increased this year, from £500 for the winning act to £700! Second place will win £200 and third place will win £100. To find out when the live shows are, look at the carnival’s Facebook page – see below for full details. Mark Cole, a Wymondham High teacher who is organising the competition, said: “This year we are expecting an even

greater number of entries. ies We want the widest possible range of talented local people to come and audition. “This process provides a platform for those people who want to break into performing at any level on stage and we all have a great time watching them grow in confidence and improving at the live shows.” Wymondham Carnival 2015 will also include a separate, special event to crown this year’s Carnival Queen on Friday 26 June. Event details and an application form can be found at www.facebook.com/wymondhamcarnival or contact Tony Holden from JPs at tony@jpslunch.co.uk

Garden Jottings from Ken C

lose your eyes and think of an English garden, go on, try it… wrong, think again… sorry, still not right! Our gardens are created from a wide range of plants from around the globe so there’s not really such a thing as an ‘English garden’, the nearest to it would be a native wildflower meadow or indigenous woodland. I reckon though that the majority of you will have conjured up an image of a country ‘cottage garden’ in mid-summer, with bees buzzing amongst a rich tapestry of flowers. At its entrance maybe a rustic arch overgrown with sweetly-scented honeysuckle or a blousy clematis, stone pathways flanked by neatly clipped box or soft drifts of lavender leading towards a doorway or an old weathered bench. Was I right? Well I’m sure you’ve got that image now! This kind of garden can contain a wide mix of plant types, utilizing evergreen and deciduous shrubs for structure, climbers on walls, fences and obelisks, and even herbs, vegetables and fruit can join the mix of carefully ordered chaos – but it’s the flowering herbaceous perennials that will have caught your mind’s eye. Whatever the site or soil type, this collection of plants has something to offer. Tall and stately; hollyhocks, delphiniums and verbascum all like their heads in the sun, or for more shady areas try acanthus, thalictrum and foxgloves. Low ground cover; spring-flowering aubretia, dianthus for summer colour, or the grass-like Liriope muscari for autumn blooms. If your soil is wet, some really bold plants are at your disposal; the mighty Gunnera manicata with its enormous leaves,

rodgersias, ligularias and Telekia speciosa with tall yellow daisy flowers, and then to more diminutive choices such as Astilbe chinensis, hostas (watch out for slugs!) and a whole host of primulas. Generally most plants classed as herbaceous perennials die back to the ground at the end of the year, but there are some which give year-round interest; beautiful hellebores, many euphorbias, bergenias (elephant’s ears), plus heuchera and heucherella which have undergone a breeding bonanza resulting in a magnificent number of enticing names and exciting foliage colours. Perennials require little maintenance other than a good annual feed, possible staking of taller varieties, water (especially in year one), deadheading and a tidy-up in Autumn (or Spring, since many have attractive seed-heads). It’s also a good idea to lift, divide and replant many types every three to five years to maintain their vigour.

There are so many great choices for any garden style and any position, call in for planting suggestions and advice!

Cheers, Ken

during June and July. Plants that need sewing around this time of year include wallflowers, pansies and daisies. Autumn-flowering bulbs – such as autumn crocuses, Colchicum, Amaryllis and Nerine – can also be planted now, as well as most winter bedding plants.

It’s important to remove them quickly because they take nutrients, water, sunlight and space from neighbouring plants. Simply dig them out with a hand or border fork and make sure no roots are left in the soil for them to grow back again.

The best time to water is in the evenings so plants keep cool overnight and try to water generously once a day rather than little and often. Focus on plants that need it most, such as large-leaf plants, and water the roots rather than the leaves. Invest in a water butt and use “grey” water as much as possible for environmentally-friendly gardening. Tip: Placing bark or gravel around the plant helps to minimise evaporation

Wortham goes to the Chelsea Flower Show Howard Nurseries displayed a collection of Heritage Irises at the 2015 event

a

n intriguing and significant display was produced for the 2015 RHS Chelsea Flower Show by Howard Nurseries, based in the village of Wortham, with help from Suffolk Plant Heritage and the former head gardener at Sissinghurst Castle, Sarah Cook. Sarah spent the last decade searching for the Irises originally cultivated by Suffolk artist Sir Cedric Morris, who ran the East Anglian Art School from his

home at Benton End. It was here that he taught students, including Lucien Freud and Maggi Hambling. The Irises Sir Cedric cultivated have a real visual clout as they were originally bred to be painted. You can see this with their strong, elegant stems and variegated petals. This provided both Morris and his students something intriguing to draw, and they were the inspiration for one of his most famous paintings, Iris Seedlings, which is on display at the Tate in London. When Sarah began her search for Morris’ Irises back in 2004, only four of his original 90 cultivars were available to buy. The Irises were found all over the world, in collections from the USA, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. Thanks to Sarah’s work her display at Chelsea featured 25 cultivars which had not been displayed since the 1960s.

Whilst Sarah was busy collecting the Irises, Howard Nurseries were busy growing them on their Suffolk farm. To try and reduce the environmental impact of horticulture, nurserymen at Howard’s grew the Irises in peat-free Melcourt potting compost. Howard’s have a long and successful history with the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, having previously won gold and silver-gilt medals at the event. They have also supplied plants to a number of medal-winning gardens, including those of designer Chris Beardshaw. The 2015 RHS Chelsea Flower Show was held on 19 to 23 May 2015.

here were quite a few things that annoyed my mother – myself included – but nothing irritated her more than a dangling modifier. They came at her from all directions, not only from her school pupils, but also from bank managers and council officials.

ExamplE 1

Cute, obedient, and cuddly, my friend Alison chose well with her new puppy. What has happened here is that the sentence started with no indication of who was being described; only that he/she/it was cute, obedient, and cuddly. The clause is simply dying to attach itself to the very next thing that is mentioned – in this case it’s Alison. The writer’s intention was to describe the puppy as “cute, obedient, and cuddly” and Alison as the person who chose the puppy. Alison may be cute, but that’s another story. After hanging there for weeks on end, Beryl decided to remove the cobweb. Poor Beryl. Put her out of her misery and try this: Beryl decided to remove the cobweb which had been hanging there for weeks on end. And so, to get back to my mother, she received many official letters containing dangling modifiers. Take a look at the following which she received: Dear Headmistress, As the local nit-nurse, you will be pleased to hear that the recent infestation is under control. Dear Parishioner, Being February, I decided to contact you about your plans for celebrating Easter.

There are several ways of putting this right:

Dear Policyholder As your insurer, you should appreciate the pitfalls of underinsurance.

Cute, obedient, and cuddly; Coco, my friend Alison’s new puppy, was a good choice.

Dear W.I. member Being Thursday, you may find our meetings difficult to attend.

My friend Alison chose well with her new cute, obedient, and cuddly puppy.

Dear Customer At a cost of £6 each, your pupils should really enjoy their day out.

My friend Alison chose well with her new puppy; Coco is so cute, obedient, and cuddly.

After going to seed, Ellen would meticulously dead-head the chrysanthemums. My mother was called Ellen, but I have no memory of her going to seed. Her chrysanthemums would if she didn’t keep an eye on them… You can start the sentence the same way, but be careful to put the flowers next to the “going to seed” to ensure that the correct attribution is made from the start. Either of these would be acceptable:

After going to seed, the chrysanthemums would be meticulously dead-headed by Ellen.

Walk in wet rooms. Sounds like something you might do after a flood had receded, but actually it is from an advert for wet-rooms; more specifically, walk-in wet-rooms.

Ellen would meticulously dead-head the chrysanthemums, after they went to seed.

Schools for

“children of the labouring poor” In the fourth of her series of articles about education in our region over the centuries, Sarah Doig looks at the rapid expansion of education for the working classes in the Victorian era.

I

n rural areas of East Anglia in the early 1800s, education for working-class children was patchy. The highlysuccessful Sunday school movement offered young children the opportunity to learn basic reading and writing skills, and in some villages, charitable endowments from wealthy residents allowed the opening up of small schools. However, in 1811, the National Society was founded and started offering grants to help build more local schools – kick-starting the emergence of national schools. Local committees were set up, often headed by the rector or another influential resident, who raised money from local inhabitants and applied for grants from both the National Society and the government. Committees had to demonstrate that “this school is intended for the instruction of the children of the labouring poor”.

Rickinghall National School

for pupils. In the latter part of the nineteenth century, government grants also depended on attendance levels and examination results, so any local happenings which impacted on attendance levels can also be found. Extracts from the Rickinghall National School logbooks:

Some of the most fascinating and revealing documents from these Victorian village schools are the logbooks kept by the head teachers. They offer us a window into the history of the teachers, pupils and even how “goings-on” in the wider community impacted on the school.

1863 Wedding of Prince of Wales, all children four to fourteen given a good dinner. Next day several sick – the effects of yesterday’s feasting

They often contain school inspectors’ reports, records on the appointment of teachers, academic success in examinations and both prizes and punishments

1882 Smallpox in village. Whooping Cough and Scarlet Fever in village

1864 Small pox epidemic. School closed for four weeks. 1875 Feb – only 54 present – Whooping Cough

1891 Children away with chilblains, colds and measles

These rural village schools had, inevitably, to also fit in with the pattern of the agricultural year. When the harvest started, schools closed to allow children to help their parents bring in the crops and there are frequent absences recorded for boys in particular, who were helping with stone-picking, field work and gathering herbs and other useful wild flowers.

Collecting antique drinking glasses

t

he eighteenth century saw the beginning of one of the greatest periods of British history in terms of creativity. Georgians liked to drink and to show off their wealth. Beautiful drinking glasses allowed them to do both.

Georgian glass is heavily collected – always handmade using crude implements, and the simple elegance of the glassware has arguably not been transcended in any period since. For nearly a hundred years, English glass dominated and was in demand around the world.

Georgian twist stem glass

The earliest drinking Th glasses made in lead crystal were the heavy balusters. and Th Thick-walled heavily-striated, hea this type of glass dominat until dominated about 1725 when the balusters became lighter, then ev eventually declined int no more than into a plain stem with a sw swelling.

Plain stem wine glasses were made throughout the eighteenth century and featured many different bowl types. Feet were folded and conical, or domed, or conical without a fold, or were thickened to make a firing foot. As with the balusters, the centre of the foot had to be raised off the table to avoid the rough pontil mark scratching the furniture on which the glass stood. Stems were made in various ways. Drawn stems are so called because they were pulled from the same piece as the bowl of the glass, and the foot was made from a separate piece of glass and fused on afterwards. Other techniques involved making the bowl, stem

Around 1740, glass-makers realised that the air-bubble in baluster glass could be manipulated to form a decorative feature/twist in the stem. This was quickly followed by the introduction of Georgian baluster glass white enamel rods resulting in an opaque white enamel twist. Coloured rods were then introduced – most commonly in reds, greens and blues. Today, brown and turquoise twist stems are considered very rare and are highly collectable. The bowls of Georgian glasses were frequently decorated with engraved images. This was achieved by using a diamond point or engraving wheel. Wine glasses were engraved with vines and grapes, cider glasses with apples and ale glasses with barley and hops. The Antiques Fair at Dunston Hall, Norwich, has several specialist glass dealers offering glass from the Georgian, Victorian and Art Deco period. They will be happy to advise you on your purchase or help you source what you are looking for.

Horse Riding Lessons: What Can I Expect? It is estimated that there are over one million horses in the UK and 4.3 million riders, making horse riding more popular than rugby, fishing or cricket in this country both as a hobby and as a serious competitive discipline.

W

hen choosing a riding school there are a few important things to check. Firstly it must be licensed by the local council, which provides a yearly check on the horses, facilities and procedures to help ensure safety. Secondly, it should be approved by either the Association of British Riding Schools or the British Horse Society to ensure a good-quality establishment. Riding schools generally offer group, private and joint-private lessons of varying lengths of time. Check on numbers in group lessons; it is fun to ride with others and make new friends but ensure you have room

to work, especially as you get more experienced. Consider visiting before your first lesson to get an idea of how things run and get a feel for the yard. Prices do vary, but check what’s included, such as hats and other necessary equipment. An indoor arena is a real asset to a riding school as it allows you to ride comfortably no matter what the weather is like. It is likely you will be able to untack your horse at the end of your lesson, which is an opportunity to get handson and learn some horse care skills if you wish to do so. Many schools also offer stable management classes, where you can learn even more about horse care.

limit depending on the horses it has to offer, so a few questions will be asked when booking your first lesson to ensure you are given a suitable horse, instruction and lesson level. As you progress, it is inevitable that you will find a favourite horse and, although it is important to try new ones, you should feel you can talk to the staff if you are not happy with a horse you are given. Riding is an age-old sport which is fun for all abilities and ages. Schools are pleased to see both regular riders and “as and when” riders, so why not visit your local riding school to see what they can offer you?

Gold: then & now Great fun f or al l tHe famil Y

The success of the carnival depends on the support from local people so why not drop by and help make this year’s event the best yet? It’s not Fathers Day this year, so the Carnival Committee look forward to welcoming huge numbers of guests to the town.

Love it or hate it, we are all touched in some way by its shiny resilience, its overpowering strength and versatility, and its ability to look good even if it has not been worn for years. Gold has had a varied history of uses. Apart from adornments, it has been used as both currency and held as gold reserves by nearly all the major countries of the world. It is the only truly safe commodity that governments trust our money to, and in these large quantities it has a power that has been trusted for decades. In recent years, gold has found another highlyvalued use in the technology industry. It is used as a conductor for electronics and has therefore seen a huge surge in value due to the insatiable and growing demand of the mobile phone and tablet market.

Gold has seen such a steady rise in value over the last few years, it has prompted the public to dig deep into their drawers and jewellery boxes in order to find some forgotten, long-discarded or broken gold to sell or part-exchange while the price is high. It is often a shock to find out that unwanted jewellery is worth so much. Many pieces can be renovated and resold, giving the customer a chance to buy a unique pre-loved piece of jewellery with genuine history and in styles that are no longer produced. Perhaps you dream of winning the lottery so you can own a vintage car or a Georgian mansion, but you don’t have to win the lottery to have your own small slice of the past when you purchase a second-hand piece of jewellery. As well as the history behind pre-owned jewellery, it is also fantastic value for money and will be loved for generations to come.

Once Upon a Tide Godfrey Sayers

Godfrey Sayers

ISBN 9780992808761 Hardback with many photographs and illustrations £19.99 Godfrey Sayers has lived most of his life on the north-Norfolk coast and the sea has been a significant part of that life: sailing on it, swimming in it and perhaps most importantly of all, painting it in all its bleak and fragile beauty. For many summers Godfrey could be found in a wagon on Blakeney’s Carnser car park, selling his paintings and looking out over the mudflats. Now he’s written the story of his life and a hugely entertaining and sometimes moving story it is. For anyone who loves this restless coastline and wants to know more about it, I recommend this fine book unhesitatingly.

56

ohn Craske was a Norfolk seaman and later a self-taught artist, both as a painter and maker of tapestries. His reputation has never equalled that of Alfred Wallis, the other great self-taught artist of seafaring scenes, but Julia Blackburn’s fascinating new biography may help to redress this. Many of Craske’s beautiful creations are illustrated in the book, as Blackburn teases out the facts of his obscure life. This is as much a book about the author and her search for Craske as it is for the shadowy subject himself and this moving story is likely to find itself up for literary prizes later in the year.

The Shepherd’s Life – A Tale of the Lake District James Rebanks

Allen Lane

ISBN 9781846148545 Hardback £16.99

M

ost of the books reviewed here have regional connections; this one doesn’t, but I expect many people of our region will enjoy it and it is so well written. James Rebanks is indeed a shepherd. His family have farmed in the Lake District for hundreds of years and he’s part of a traditional way of life that clings on in odd corners of these islands. He is less than effusive about the tourist hordes – you and me – who descend on the Lake District every year, contending that they generally don’t notice and certainly don’t understand the working lives of those who live in the place. He writes clearly, fascinatingly, unsentimentally about work on the fells in all extremes of weather and the dangers of the place.

View our region from a different perspective with this fascinating selection of local titles from Chris Rushby of Jarrolds’ Book Department Wild Guide – Southern and Eastern England Daniel Start, Lucy Grewcock & Elsa Hammond

Wild Things Publishing

ISBN 9781910636008 Paperback with many maps, photographs and illustrations £15.99

T

he Wild Guides started as a single book about finding places for wild swimming, but the series has grown and this new “compendium of adventures” features the best wild places to visit in southern and eastern England – including East Anglia in this volume. It contains ideas for slow food and the more bohemian kinds of accommodation. From swimming rivers, secret beaches and lost ruins to ancient woods, meadows and orchards. It makes a useful alternative to the conventional tourist guide and will help the visitor – and the local – find some off-thebeaten-track places they may not otherwise have discovered.

Graeme Cameron

MIRA

ISBN 9781848453623 Paperback £7.99

M

ake no mistake, this isn’t a read for the faint-hearted: the narrative is gripping and gruesome. The narrator, we soon discover, is a serial killer who appears to have been getting away with murder for many years – in fact, he has turned it into a chilling and well-organised hobby. Finally, though, he comes across someone who stirs feelings of affection in him that might just bring him back towards the fold of humanity if it’s not too late. Author Graeme Cameron lives and works in Norfolk, therefore many of the places featured in the novel are recognisably local ones. I defy you not to be drawn into this pageturning read – but only if you can cope with pretty high levels of violence in your crime-thriller reading.

Coastlines – The Story of our Shore Patrick Barkham

Granta

ISBN 9781847088970 Hardback with line illustrations £20 Patrick Barkham is a features writer for Guardian and is one of the best of the current generation of nature writers. His previous books, Butterfly Isle and Badgerlands have won him both critical praise and literary awards. His new book tells the story of the British coastline, a tale told in a series of walks made by the author along some of the most picturesque and fascinating stretches of the coasts of the four home nations. Being a Norfolk man, Patrick’s travels inevitably take him more than once to this region, including a return to Scolt Head Island, where he spent some happy childhood holidays.

Best cars for dogs By Tim Barnes-Clay Motoring Journalist www.carwriteups.co.uk Twitter @carwriteups Dogs are part of the family and don’t like being left behind when everyone else goes on a road trip. That means you need a dog-friendly car, and some are better for the job than others. I’ve collated five of the most suitable motors for you and your pooch.

Mazda CX-5

Most Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) are great for taking your dog out to the local wood or off the beaten track. The Mazda CX-5 is no exception; it has liberal front and rear legroom and a roomy boot (463 litres) plus a premium feel, superior functionality and low noise levels for a pleasurable ride. Easy-to-use features include three-piece 40/20/40 split folding rear seats with release levers in the cargo area. It’s an excellent choice for most dog owners, especially if children are involved as it’s officially one of the safest cars in the world.

Honda CR-V

This SUV is perfectly suited to many dog lovers’ way of life. It behaves and drives like a “normal” car, yet has the space of an estate, 4x4 safety, plus enough grunt to tow a trailer, caravan or horsebox. The boot capacity is a spacious 589 litres, and this extends to 1669 litres when the seats are down, so your hound(s) will have heaps of space.

Peugeot 3008

The 3008 is a medium-size car, so it is versatile and roomy, but not so big it’s intimidating. It benefits from a user-friendly load area and access is made easy by a split tailgate of which the lower part can become a seat or be used to support a weight of 200kg. This makes it ideal for your canine companion to bounce in and out of. The conveniently-flat boot surface can easily be compartmentalised, thanks to the cleverlydesigned floor with its three adjustable positions.

Mercedes-Benz E 300 BlueTEC Estate Being of hearse-like appearance it’ll come as no surprise that the Mercedes-Benz E 300 BlueTEC Estate is big enough to carry a coffin, probably. In other words, the car’s load area is colossal and ideal for Pongo and Patch. It’s also low, meaning you can pack up the vehicle without giving your poor old back any more strain than it needs. If truth be told, it’s very hard to fault the MercedesBenz E 300.

Volvo XC70

If you have a dog and you really don’t want an SUV, your best alternative is an estate car. The Volvo XC70 is a perfect example as it’s been created especially for your pet and outdoor devotees. It has a dog barrier to ensure your pet’s wellbeing whilst travelling and its rear seats can be folded down in three 40/20/40 sections. Collapse all of them flat and the load space swells from 575 litres to 1,600 litres. Another handy function is the power-operated tailgate and a divider to keep your furry friend safely in the loadarea alongside your shopping.

Meet the author: Timothy Bentinck He’s an actor, an IT-whiz and now a children’s book author. From BBC Radio 4’s The Archers, to his book, Colin the Campervan, Timothy Bentinck has proved he has a way with words.

i

t’s no wonder Timothy Bentinck’s voice precedes him. He’s spent some 30 years lending his vocal cords to David Archer in the iconic radio soap opera series The Archers, all the while voicing audio books and adverts too. Bentinck’s face is also familiar to many – he’s been acting since his twenties, appearing both on screen and on stage.

With computer-programming and home-renovation skills also under his belt, the multifaceted creative is now turning his career in an even more colourful direction. He’s written a children’s book called Colin the Campervan. “It came as a complete accident actually,” said Timothy. “I wrote it not as a book, but as a story for my children. “When they were young we had a campervan which was old and didn’t have a heater. We froze to death in it and it kept breaking down. So I wrote it into a

‘supervan’as a sort of wish-fulfilment. I read the story to my boys and then it sat as a Word file on my computer for 20 years until Kindle came out. Then, because I’m a bit of a computerprogrammer, I turned it into Kindle format and uploaded it onto there, not really thinking any more of it.” But soon after that publishers were expressing interest. The storybook, illustrated by Owen Claxton, has a yesteryear charm now a rare find on the high street. “It’s the same as the storybooks from when I was younger,” he explained. “It’s timeless. There’s enough brashness and computerised stuff around, whereas this is slightly wistful. Everybody has a relationship with their car in some way – particularly back then with the older cars which often didn’t work properly. Modern cars have less character because they’re more reliable.” Bentinck is already writing the next instalment of Colin the Campervan. “I can sort of imagine writing a whole series, with Colin guesting on the next Pixar Cars film,” he said. “Then I could put my feet up and not have to work so hard!” Colin the Campervan is out now, through FBS Publishing, £5.99

In good HealtH Nothing Improves Without Change Sticking at a good training programme and doing it well for six weeks is good and should reap some reward. Anything, if you work hard at it, will reap some reward. But if it hasn’t happened in six weeks, then it’s never going to happen.

I

f you train consistently then you are providing a good stimulus to force physical change. If you work hard and push your limits then that forces you body to get better too. However, your body is stubborn and without change you will simply maintain where you are at physically – rather than improving. Aim to change and progress your training programme every six weeks for regular results. The same can be said about food. If you have found yourself in a position where you have more around your middle than you would like then it’s your consistent food choices that have put it there. Rubbish is still rubbish no matter how big or small the portion size, so do your body a favour and change your nutrition. Consistently eating a better range of food will impact fat loss, not to mention your health and wellbeing.

Q&A HEALTH Taking the stress out of life Q:

I often get worked up over small, insignificant things, when I know I shouldn’t. I don’t deal with the stresses of life very well, so how do I find ways to cope?

In our modern society, it is difficult to avoid the increased demands of a busy life. You may feel that you are going to buckle under the pressure, however if you can find a coping strategy there is no reason why this should happen.

A:

It is important to learn some quick-fix stress-management techniques to help you get through a particularly difficult day or moment:

• Laughter - distract yourself by reading something funny,

talking to someone who is funny or sharing a joke with someone you get on with. Humour helps relieve the symptoms of stress by producing “feel-good”chemicals in the brain.

• Deep breathing - learn a few breathing techniques to help you relax. Simply counting to 10 before responding to a stressful situation is often all that is required.

• Take a walk - get away from it all and clear your head by

taking a brisk walk outside. Sometimes a change of scenery and some fresh air can help you forget the stress you’re under.

• Speak to a friend or a colleague - if you have a work problem, a colleague may be able to help you by taking responsibility for a few of the tasks you have not got round to.

• Make a cup of tea - herbal is best. Try peppermint tea to calm any digestive symptoms or chamomile tea to help you relax. Even the few minutes spent making a cup of tea can help you to take your mind off the situation.

• Use other herbal remedies, such as Bioforce Vogel Swiss

Stress Relief Daytime, which is made using the gentle herb valerian. A good Vitamin B Complex, such as Solgar Vitamin B50 complex, will all help to support the nervous system and restore calm when taken daily.

• Consider seeing a specialist practitioner or joining a meditation or mindfulness group.

Love’s mission in the darkest suffering Norfolk journalist, Sandie Shirley, spotlights the inspiring stories of men and women from the region and beyond that have seen them reach for victory. For more stories visit: www.refreshingwaters.co.uk

esperate lives destroyed by disease, poverty and prejudice are being transformed as people work together to end leprosy. That’s the message highlighted by Mike Griffin from Thetford as he rallies support for leprosy. “We aim to stop leprosy destroying lives and cure patients,” says Mike who works for the Leprosy Mission. With a heart for broken, suffering outcasts, the regional manager for SE England, Wales and the Channel Islands is a continual driving force for change, acceptance and support. His job takes him to the front-line of suffering where sacrificial love brings healing and revolution to some of the poorest, marginalised people across the globe. He has visited India and Bangladesh and returned from his second trip to Nepal last November with wife and long-standing volunteer, Linda. The Leprosy Mission provides health care and training at hospitals and satellite clinics and is dedicated to reversing the hatred and anger that breeds stigma. “The darkest places of suffering are alive with God’s presence. They are unique, special places and the tangible sense of God at the leprosy hospital is very healing for the patients, whatever their faith,” says Mike who has worked for the Mission for 11 years after leaving church ministry. “The disease can be cured within six months with multi-drug therapy but tragically we also see those who are thrown out by their families – they may lose their homes, jobs and access to their children and be denied health care. e.” In Nepal self-help groups help beat the challenges of the marginalised and those affected by general disability. Struggling widows and those disabled by leprosy and general disability receive support and grants to rebuild their lives with new skills and jobs so they cease to be a burden on the community.

68

“The groups bring dignity and empowerment which is inspirational. People are given a second chance which they are quick to grab as they stand united to become farmers, shop keepers, dressmakers or other income-generating opportunities of their choice,” says Mike.

Rev Mike Griffin, the Leprosy Mission’s Regional

“The initiative is Fundraising Manager encouraged where there is a high level of stigma but once the groups are registered the door opens to further support that benefits the whole community which helps to reduce the stigma.” Last autumn Mike and Linda visited Nepal with a group of Leprosy Mission volunteers who, on their return, were further enabled to tell out a message of hope and on-going need to local churches after they saw the work in action.

Linda Griffin with a leprosy sufferer

“We took 14 vo volunteer speakers with us for the first time; the they were completely overwhelmed by the love they saw and felt from the staff whose heart and desire is to follow Jesus,” says Mike. Smart Money Secrets

Time to give your bank the elbow By Andrew Hagger independent personal finance analyst from www.moneycomms.co.uk

D

oes it annoy you that your bank doesn’t pay you interest when you’re in the black or that it charges the earth if you go slightly overdrawn? If the answer is “yes”, maybe it’s time to switch to a better bank account. With the new Current Account Switch Service it is so much quicker and easier to take your custom elsewhere – just choose your new bank and they’ll look after the rest. The process will take a maximum of seven working days and there’s also a guarantee that you won’t incur any charges during the switch over.

Too many of us have put up with sub-standard products and poor service for too long, but now it’s much less hassle to vote with your feet and switch to an account that mirrors the way you manage your money. Although each bank and building society has its own tariff and rate details clearly displayed in marketing literature, working out which account is best can be a big headache. There is not one account that works out as the top choice for everybody, it’s more about weighing up the individual elements of an account that are most important to you. For some, a low-cost overdraft will be the priority, while interest on credit balances or a debit card offering low-cost transactions abroad will be key for others.

I’ve carried out some research to try and establish which accounts are strongest in each of the different areas: it’s a cheap overdraft that’s most • Ifimportant, then take a look at First Direct (first £250 interest-free), M&S Bank (first £100 interestfree) or the FlexAccount from Nationwide Building Society.

looking for interest • Ifonyou’re your credit balances, then

consider TSB which pays 5% up to a maximum balance of £2,000 or Tesco Bank which pays 3% up to a maximum balance of £3,000.

larger balances, Santander • For 123 comes out on top, paying

a very competitive 3% gross from a balance of £3,000 up to a maximum of £20,000.

seeking a cheap debit • Ifcardyou’refor use overseas then

Norwich & Peterborough Building Society offers this facility for free worldwide, whilst Nationwide

Building Society is much cheaper than the main banks in this area. (Picking the wrong bank when it comes to debit card costs abroad can cost far more than you’d imagine. A two-week summer holiday could easily see you shelling out an extra £50 or more in charges – a saving that will more than outweigh the total interest many of us earn on our bank account in a whole year.) some of us mostly • Meanwhile, value a consistently good level of service and the ability to talk to a human being at a UK call centre 24/7. Current top-performers for customer service continue to be First Direct and The Co-operative Bank.

The decision to switch is not something people undertake lightly or want do on a regular basis, so it is important to do your homework and pick an account that best reflects the way you run your finances.

Family law

need-to-knows What is a common-law husband/wife?

Unmarried couples who live together and share their lives and finances under the same roof are often under the mistaken assumption that they have legal rights as a common-law husband or wife if they separate. However, there is no such thing as a common-law husband/wife. Unmarried couples do not have the same rights if the relationship ends as they would if they were married and getting a divorce. In fact, they have no rights at all, save some limited circumstances.

A spouse can ask for spousal maintenance from the other spouse, they can ask to share in the other’s spouse’s pension assets and have the right to share in all property and capital assets, whether the property is jointly owned or not. Unmarried couples have no such rights and it is harder to make claims to share property or assets on separation. If an unmarried couple owns property jointly, they will usually each have the same rights in respect of that property. There may be an argument whether the equity should be divided equally or in other shares and if the property is in one of the couple’s sole name, the other may have no rights at all – even if they have been paying towards the mortgage or household expenses. In some cases, it may be possible to claim that the non-owning party has acquired rights over the property but they have to be able to prove that they have contributed to the house and that the property was intended to be held jointly, even if was owned by one person. Take advice to find out what rights you do and don’t have, especially if you are thinking of moving in with someone and either they own the property or you own the property. If you already live with someone in that situation it is not too late to find out where you stand and there are things you can do protect your position. For anyone going through separation, it may seem a legal minefield but sensible legal advice can help you get out of the mess amicably with your ex.

What do you know about credit unions?

A

n alternative to a bank, credit unions are cooperative businesses, owned 100% by their members. Any surplus that they make is shared as a dividend to its members at the end of the year. Many credit unions offer a wide range of services, such as:

• Secure savings • Affordable loans • Online account access • Same-day bank transfers • Debit-card facilities via a prepaid VISA card • Paypoint cards which can be used to pay in money at Post Offices and some shops

In our region, Eastern Savings & Loans Credit Union (ESLCU) offers membership to anyone who lives or works in Norfolk, Suffolk or Cambridgeshire. It is registered under Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies, and is a member of the Association of British Credit Unions. ESLCU was created in January 2014 from the merger of two of the region’s largest credit unions, Norfolk Credit Union and Ipswich and Suffolk Credit Union. It now has more than 7,000 members across Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, with over £2.5million in assets.

Members pay a £2 joining fee, deposit an initial minimum of £5 into their savings account, and pay a small membership fee of 25p per week. Anyone over 18 can join as a full member, and there are junior accounts for under18s which can be opened free of charge and offer 2% interest on the balance. Eastern Savings and Loans Credit Union is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA), regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and registered under the Credit Unions Act 2010. Deposits are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. To find out more about ESLCU’s services, call 03336 000690 and quote “Village People Magazine”.

Village wanderings East Ruston and Honing

This circular walk begins at East Ruston and sets out across tracks and grazing marshes. The path crosses the North Walsham & Dilham Canal at Tonnage Bridge and then follows the bank of this quiet waterway through fields and woodland. Re-crossing the canal at a disused lock, the path joins the Weavers’ Way that leads back to the starting point. Distance: approximately 3.5 miles. Using OS Explorer Map OL40. Start grid ref: TG 346272. 1 The grazing marshes on the north side of the river are full of the ‘Yellow flag’ iris. It is one of two iris species native to the UK and thrives in marshy areas. Other early spring flowers already in evidence included primroses, blackthorn and goat willow.

4 The name of the Weavers’ Way comes from the weaving industry based around North Walsham during the Middle Ages. This section of the 56-mile Way follows the track bed of the former Midland & Great Northern Railway.

Honing Common

1

3 3 Honing was one of six locks on the nine-mile North Walsham & Dilham Canal. This is said to be the only canal in Norfolk and was opened in 1826. It was used for transport of goods, including a weekly ‘cabbage’ wherry to Great Yarmouth! It fell into disrepair in the early 1900s. It is now managed by the North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust.

2

We loved the quiet ‘wildness’ of the formerly busy rail and water ways. With Spring struggling to make headway in this cold start to 2015, the wonderful icingsugar blossom sprinkled on the blackthorn was a harbinger of things to come. Walked, written and designed by Kevin Parker (keeper.kev@btinternet.com) and Kaarin Wall (kaarin@wizgraphics.co.uk) © 2015.

78

Tonnage Bridge 2 Every vessel using the canal had to pay a toll, collected at Tonnage Bridge. The bridge collapsed in 1980 and was rebuilt shortly afterwards to allow the crossing of farm machinery.
