Welcome

Quarterly, monthly, bi-monthly? We’re often asked how many times a year we publish, so to answer the question, it’s bimonthly. But this doesn’t fully answer the question as the dictionary description of bi-monthly is ‘occurring or produced twice a month or every two months’. And before you cry out that you know the answer, it is of course, every two months. That’s a lot of magazines a year if you bear in mind that we print 50,000 copies of every issue; 300,000 to be precise! We now reach over 200 villages in South Norfolk and we really love hearing from readers if you have a story to share about your village. In this issue, we cover the amazing success of one of South Norfolk’s smaller villages who has won itself nearly £1 million of lottery funding for community projects over the last two years. Walking round its quiet lanes, you might be tempted to call it sleepy, but I think you’ll agree from reading our article that it’s anything but. Can you guess which village I am talking about? With spring just around the corner, would you like the chance to have a new look? Well this issue’s competition is just for you as we have teamed up with John Lewis to offer one lucky reader a personal styling session at John Lewis in Norwich. Hop onto our website where you can follow our easy instructions of how to enter. Just a reminder that we’re very happy to support anything and everything local and community based so if you are organising an event this year, or you know someone who is, do remember that you can promote your events for free with Village People by submitting them directly to our website www.village-people.info. With thousands and thousands of readers, it’s the best way to get free promotion in the region. Until next time readers, well two months to be exact!

ARE YOU BRAVE ENOUGH TO TAKE ON THE CHALLENGE?

Only the Brave, East Anglian Air Ambulance’s obstacle course challenge event, is back for the second year, taking place at the Elveden Estate near Thetford on 1 and 2 April 2017 to raise money for their life-saving charity. There will be six races in total over the weekend with three each day. People can enter individually or as part of a team and they can choose between a 5 or 10 mile mud run with over 40 obstacles; running, crawling, climbing, and scrambling to the finish line. And this year, it’s bigger, better, and muddier than ever before! East Anglian Air Ambulance needs to raise over £11m this year to keep its helicopters in the sky and Only is the Brave is one way to help achieve this. For more information about this event and to register to take part, please visit: www.eaaa.org.uk/events/only-the-brave/

the creation of a multisport ‘hub’ that will address the current and future sporting needs of Long Stratton and the surrounding villages. Darren Huckerby, who lives locally and now works at Norwich City FC as their Under-16s coach, said: “What a brilliant new pitch this is! My playing days and role as a coach have made me appreciate just how important these types of facilities are, with youngsters needing to get out there and enjoy their football on top quality playing surfaces.”

THE SOUND OF NATURE An art group is launching a new project to make music and connect with nature. Sensing Nature, a new initiative by Waveney and Blyth Arts, will explore the nature of sound and sound in nature, and will lead to bespoke outdoor musical performances in 2017. Working with the Norfolk and Norwich Association for the Blind and a group of professional musicians, the group will partner with locally-based visually impaired singers and musicians to inspire people to become sound-aware.

Jan Dungey, co-project manager, said: “Local animals, birds, insects and other creatures make the most extraordinary sounds – from barking foxes, to melodic nightingales, to chirping crickets.” The resultant sound trail, comprising instrumental and vocal performances, will be performed to the public at Thornham Walks, a beautiful area of woodland near Eye, in June 2017. For more information, please contact Mike Davison from Waveney and Blyth Arts on 01379 852501 or email davisonmike@outlook.com.

PART 6

The Stowaway cat In Part 5, Su was having second thoughts about her lunch date with Graham when Milly the cat got completely stuck on the bedroom windowsill… “Hang on!” I shouted as I went upstairs into the bedroom, intending to open the window, and let her in. “Budge up, woman,” I said, pointing to the other side of the window. “I can’t move!” was the retort I received. She was standing on the narrow sill, trying to twist her head so that she could stare inwards through the glass, her whiskers flattened the wrong way against her face, and her eyes wild and staring. “Yes, you can move,” I yelled, “and it might help if you backed away from the opening part of the window, so that I can let you in!” All this I had to shout loudly because of the efficiency of the double glazing and the inefficiency of the cat brain. She whimpered. “I can’t hear you. I can’t get down. I’m frightened. I don’t like it here. HELP ME!” Having no other choice, I ran downstairs, found the garage key, got the car out of the garage, found the ladder, went back indoors, upstairs, changed shoes, went back down, outside, positioned the ladder under the window, found two bits of brick to level-up the ladder, hoisted my skirt up to the waist and effected a rescue worthy of the fire brigade. She wriggled a bit on the way down the ladder, but my vicelike grip on her head foiled her useless attempts to free herself. Her teeth, locked in a similar but more painful vice-like grip on my arm, meant that I only had one elbow available to steady myself on the descent, so I leaned forwards, supporting myself with my forehead on the rungs.

14

Within the space of four minutes all my efforts to look presentable for my lunch date with Graham were undone. “It was only a bloody grass snake, you dim-wit,” I growled as we made our undignified way back down the ladder. She jumped out of my arms to do the last 6 inches totally unaided. “Ah, back on solid ground,” she purred gaily, sounding like an astronaut landing on Mars. “I don’t know what all the fuss was about,” she trilled brightly. “Now I’ve got to put the ladder away, in case of burglars,” I muttered. So, at the very moment Graham rolled up in his magnificent car, I was frantically trying to re-apply lipstick without looking, squirting perfume to hide the smell of antiseptic cream on my gnawed bits of flesh, and generally trying to adopt a relaxed appearance. “Well, look at you!” he exclaimed, as he got out of the car. I panicked just for a moment, wondering which part of Milly was still sticking to me. “My very own fashion model,” he went on, smiling rather too smugly for my immediate comfort. Ah well, let’s get it over with, I thought. Part 7 continues in the next issue. Copyright Susan Lidster

Going, going, gone! Elizabeth Talbot, Director of TW Gaze, Diss Auction Rooms and BBC television antiques

expert predicts what will be selling fast in the auction room this year. 2016 was a very dynamic year for the auction market: activity was frenetic, interest in buying and selling was strong, prices for certain specialisms were seen to rally. So, what can we expect for 2017 and where should our attention turn if we want to follow a winning trend? Last year saw a steady return to favour of a variety of classic auction room favourites, with competition between bidders pushing values up. Whilst fashions change very quickly in the modern consumer-led world, I see no reason why these current contenders should not shine throughout 2017 as well: 1. Local photograph postcards, especially those privately executed and produced – the rarer the image subject, e.g. floods, fires, early transport, shops and services, advertising or views now lost, the more successful the card 2. Period oak – a long-overdue return to an appreciation of England’s finest wood 3. Vintage and classic cars – this market has returned to the fast lane after dawdling, some would say almost on the hard shoulder, for a few years 4. Good quality 20th century studio pottery – especially by British potters, who have somewhat stolen the crown from Scandinavian producers in recent months

5. Local art – the distinctive East Anglian art tradition extends over many centuries and is alive and well today; collectors tend d to be very loyal and this continues as an area for both appreciation and investment 6. Musical instruments, classic and evocative of their time – e.g. 18th and 19th century violins and 1950s/60s electric guitars, especially Fenders and Gibsons: genetic “all-so-ran” examples are not faring so well 7. Ercol furniture – interestingly it is currently the light elm colour and not the dark mahogany shades which are finding favour: this has been a complete reversal in taste in just a few months 8. Vintage and retro music systems, especially by Bang & Olufsen – sparked by the well-publicised surge in vinyl revival 9. Craftsman’s tools from bygone eras – these have never really been out of favour, but nonetheless, there has been a hearty appetite for these throughout 2016 and prices have continued to rise; I see no reason why this should abate 10. Weird and wonderful, quirky and ugly, tend to yield surprises, so never dismiss anything – often pretty and beautiful result in the biggest disappointments Whether you wish to collect and invest or divest and liquidise, a full auction calendar can be found at twgaze.co.uk

Ladies Who Lunch THE BOARS

Bunwell Road, Spooner Row, Wymondham, Norfolk, NR18 9LL 01953 605851 • www.theboars.co.uk

One of my favourite up-market eateries, The Boars, has recently changed hands, and I was interested to see what changes have been made. I have eaten there half a dozen times in the past and always enjoyed the food and the company.

W

e were shown to our reserved table by a Nice Young Man, and were handed a newspaper-style menu each; there were also specials on a blackboard which caught my eye.

While we perused the options, I started on my cool draft Adnams Southwold ale, and my companion drank her San Perito. The menu included pork, beef, duck, bream, smoked mackerel and two vegetarian options. I liked the idea of the red onion tart with goats’cheese and leeks, and my friend asked for the smoked mackerel. Nice Young Man brought our food after about 25 minutes which gave us time to study the other pages of the menu. There is a Little Piglets section with two courses for a reasonable £7, and a Sunday menu showing the roasts – sirloin of beef, chicken, loin of pork, and a nut roast – all at £12 or £13. Interestingly, the Christmas special three course lunch with a free glass of wine was only £29, so roll on next December! I discovered my buttered leeks hiding under the onion tart that was surrounded by red pepper pesto, the beetroot and the pomegranate seeds added a sweet and bright red touch to the meal which was generously proportioned and extremely

20

tasty. By this time, my friend had all but finished her smoked mackerel and was waiting for Nice Young Man to bring her a spoon to finish up the sauce. Cubes of garlic potato and fennel and chicory surrounded her generous portion of fish. Both dishes had pea shoots scattered over them giving a light-hearted touch with their curly tendrils. For pudding I had spotted an orange and Cointreau panna cotta with cranberry ice cream. It came with cranberries sprinkled over it and was delicious, and not too sickly sweet. A generous size serving at a reasonable price. My friend chose star anise and red wine poached pear with orange sponge and vintage orange marmalade which she pronounced perfect, especially the orange sponge. A couple of espressos finished the meal off beautifully, and they were hot and strong, and

came with a lovely freshly baked Christmassy biscuit each. I really enjoyed this meal, and the place is warm and very friendly. If you want peace and quiet away from the food, there is a dog-friendly snug with a log fire. For followers of the gin craze, there are 12 different gins on the menu, and the same number of whiskies.

The

musical with the holiday vibe

The first ever UK tour of Mamma Mia! arrives in Norwich for a four-week stay from February 28 to March 25, bringing this much-loved sunny and funny tale of family and friendship, and Abba’s iconic and timeless music, to a Theatre Royal audience.

M

amma Mia! is producer Judy Craymer’s ingenious vision of staging the storytelling magic of the songs of 1970s/80s supertroopers Abba.

Set on a Greek island paradise, writer Catherine Johnson’s storyline features a daughter setting out on the eve of her wedding to discover the identity of her father and in doing so, she brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago. Enthralling theatre audiences since 1999, it has now been seen by more than 60 million people around the world, with the London production alone being seen by the equivalent of 10% of the entire UK population. To date, there have been some 50 productions of the show in 16 different languages, while the 2008 film Mamma Mia! The Movie – which starred Julie Walters, Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan – is the highest grossing liveaction musical film of all time. In 2011, it became the first Western musical ever to be staged in Mandarin in the People’s Republic

of China, while more recent conquests have also included a vast cruise ship which tours the Caribbean with a Mamma Mia! that can be seen by 1000 seafarers. For Norwich theatre-goers, Judy Craymer promises a show with a big heart. “People love it so they return. In the audience sometimes one member will turn to the other and say ‘Is this your first time?’ It’s like ‘welcome to the club’. It’s also a show that people like to see in a community atmosphere. They like to bring friends and family,” she said. The star of the show is undoubtedly the fantastic catalogue of Abba songs, but its cleverly-crafted emotional story of love, friendship and identity also strikes a chord with those who see it, casting a magical spell thanks to characters that everyone can empathise with and a storyline that tugs at the heart-strings. Plus there is the chance to say ‘Thank You For The Music’ when audience members get to their feet to dance to Waterloo and Dancing Queen, sung by Donna and the Dynamos in wonderful Seventies spandex outfits in the show’s finale. Mamma Mia! runs at Norwich Theatre Royal from February 28 to March 25. Tickets are available at the box office in person, by calling 01603 630000 or online at www.theatreroyalnorwich.co.uk

Spring Vegetable Soup

W

ith so much flavour bursting into life this spring season, it seems a shame to restrict ourselves to a rigid recipe! So, here’s a base recipe for a delicious and fresh flavoured soup, which will work extremely well with any combination of spring vegetables. It will also do an admirable job of using up any leftover veggies you have in the fridge. There’s a few optional ideas noted too, for adding to ‘the base’, to help you along as you experiment.

Method: l

l

l

Ingredients 2 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, peeled and chopped 1 garlic clove, peeled and chopped Salt and pepper 500g vegetables, prepared as appropriate and chopped roughly. You could use potatoes, cauliflower, leeks, root vegetables - feel free to mix and match whatever you fancy 1-11/2 litres of stock - vegetable or chicken, or vegetable cooking water

30

l

l

In a large saucepan, fry the onions and garlic gently in the oil for a few minutes, until softened. Add in your vegetables, stirring to coat everything in the oil, then continue to cook gently for 10-15 minutes. You could also add a bouquet garni here if you want a more aromatic soup, or even a couple of chopped chillies if you prefer a little kick. Add in about a litre of the stock (the remainder can be used later to thin the soup if necessary), and season with salt and pepper to taste. Simmer until the veg is tender (15-20 minutes). You could add some chopped tomatoes here for a tomatoey soup, or even a little cream for a richer one. Blend if you fancy (with a hand blender or liquidiser) all of the soup, or even just half of it (which is quite good). Thin down with the remaining stock if required, and check the seasoning. Reheat and serve when ready!

There’s something special about a fresh spring vegetable soup, but then again that can be said of a hearty winter vegetable soup too - so keep hold of this recipe, it’ll become a good friend!

10 Top Tips for a Happier Relationship A new relationship is like a young plant. At first we are caring and attentive, happily watching it grow. As the seasons pass we can become neglectful, and the plant may wilt. To prevent wilting in your relationship, consider these tips:

1. 2. 3.

Deal with your unhealthy behaviour. Jealousy, infidelity and criticism (and more) do not create happy relationships. Be generous with your love. Give and receive with equal appreciation. Boost your partner’s self-esteem whenever possible. Open, honest communication is vital to a healthy, happy relationship.

4. 5.

6. 7. 8. 9.

Sincerely apologise if you have hurt your partner. Don’t apologise simply to keep the peace. Be assertive when asking for help. If you say, “It would be nice to have some help around here”, you’re not actually asking for anything, so it’s likely to sound like complaining. Be specific, “Will you vacuum while I cook dinner, please?” Be respectful to your partner, privately and publicly. Be best friends for each other – honest, loyal, trustworthy, supportive, caring and loving. Be intimate. Share some of your thoughts, feelings and experiences only with your partner. Be loving and keep it special. During a relationship crisis, don’t assume that leaving is your only option. Explore what could get you both to a healthier, happier place.

10. All stages of your relationship can be

interesting and rewarding. Enjoy each other and the relationship which you share.

Poaed Chicken Hotpot This is a lovely sppring recipe, using a steamerr (one that sits neatly over the saucepaan is ideal) and - most imporrtantly - using good quality, locally soourced ingredients. It’s especially quick to make, is low in fat and blissfully healthy (for those of us still sticking to our New Year’s resolutions) yet deliciously satisfying and full of fresh flavours. It can’t fail to become a regular family favourite.

Ingredients 750ml stock (chicken or vegetable) 4 skinless chicken breasts 100g smoked streaky bacon, chopped (optional) 1/2 a smallish savoy cabbage, cut into 4 wedges 6 carrots, peeled and cut into large chunks A bay leaf and a sprig of rosemary Salt and pepper to taste

If you’re feeling indulgent, (and keeping the chicken and veg warm in the steamer to one side) you could simmer the stock for 5-10 minutes reducing it by half, then adding a splash of brandy and double cream, simmering for a further 5 minutes, to make a rich and velvety sauce. For a fishy version of this, you could swap the chicken for 4 x 100g smoked haddock fillets, steaming these for 5 minutes at the end until just cooked - so versatile!

34

Method

1. Heat the stock, with the bay leaf and rosemary,

gently in the saucepan, and add the chicken and bacon (if using bacon). Next, add seasoning (go easy with the salt if you’re using the smoked bacon).

2. Sit the carrots and cabbage in the steamer over

the stock, and simmer everything gently for 15-18 minutes, until the cabbage has wilted, the carrots are tender, and the chicken is cooked through.

and serve the chicken, cabbage and carrots 3. Divide in 4 deep bowls, (removing the herbs and slicing

the chicken if you need to) and ladle over the stock with the bacon pieces. (You may need a spoon or some crusty bread so as not to waste the fragrantly infused broth!)

Garden Jottings from Ken

ave you taken part in the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch? This annual event encourages members of the public up and down the country to watch and record all types of birds and other creatures that visit their garden over a one hour period on a set weekend in January. Individual observations are then collated, and the results build up an over-all picture of the spread of wildlife across the UK, and an indication of species increasing or declining in population. For those of you that already take part it’s worthwhile fun and a personal challenge to beat the previous year’s count, but what can you and newcomers to this activity do to increase your odds and attract more of our feathered friends into your gardens? Obviously, the best way to tempt garden birds in is to provide something they just can’t do without, and food is pretty high up on the list. Imagine if every restaurant in the country served free food, you would naturally choose to eat at the best and most convenient outlets, where the food is fresh, nutritious and plentiful, then you and many others would literally be flocking in! For nature it’s much the same, the quality, accessibility and variety of food available will determine the numbers and types of birds you are e likely to attract.

Cheap basic seed mixes usually contain a large amount of wheat and other bulking ingredients to help keep its cost down, but most small birds will sift through these in order to find more nutritious seeds, discarding all but the best bits onto the ground, either for larger species such as pigeons and pheasants to hoover up, or to germinate into a small lawn. Try upgrading to a ‘no mess’ mix which will contain a larger proportion of small seeds and no husks, plus any wheat that is included should have been crushed or rolled (our mix is also heat-treated which softens the seed making it more palatable, and also stops it from germinating). Birds adore sunflower seeds and most can split open the husks of black sunflowers, but for an even more rewarding snack sunflower hearts will fit the bill! These provide a luxury food source for almost all species, and a choice feed for goldfinches instead of the usual thistle (nyger) seed which requires a specialist feeder to stop wastage. Peanuts and suet-based snacks are high in fat and gre eat for feeding year round but especially in cold weather. Once again, quality varies greatly, so we now stock a premium fat ball, and although each costs a few pence more you can really see the difference, packed full of seed and containing 59% more protein than standard ones. Always keep your food offering fresh by putting out just enough for a couple of days, and try to serve at different heights, some at ground level for foraging birds such as dunnocks and thrushes, on tables (robins and blackbirds love mealworms), or in feeders for acrobatic tits and finches, and don’t forget to provide a source of clean water as eating is thirsty work! Call in for more suggestions on creating a garden that’s enticing for you and for wildlife.

Cheers, Ken

THE FIRST SIGNS OF SPRING

FLOWERS If you want lilies to flower in the summer then February is the time to plant them. Grow them in pots indoors (or in a greenhouse) until the flowers appear, when you can move them onto the patio and enjoy the display! When bulbs start to appear in the rock garden then you may wish to protect them from the elements. A sheet of Perspex propped up on piles of bricks does a good job of protecting bulbs from rain or snow. Early spring is the time

to sow hardy annuals in pots (or directly into wellprepared soil in milder areas) to provide some colour in your garden. Try clarkia, cornflowers or Californian poppies for a colourful display. In March you can sow sweet peas; place them in a sunny spot in your greenhouse to ensure they get plenty of light. It’s also the time to plant summerflowering bulbs like allium, begonia, gladiolus and the so-called ‘fireball lily’, scadoxus.

PONDS

HOUSEPLANTS Houseplants can really brighten up your home during the winter, but they need special care to be kept in good condition. Cyclamen are a popular houseplant, but can be prone to yellowing leaves. This may be a sign that the plant has been watered too much. It’s best to water cyclamen from below by filling the saucer, leaving it for half an hour to absorb and then pouring away the remaining water. You should keep cacti dormant until March, with very little water and no feeding until then. With a Christmas cactus,

twist off some of the stem segment to balance the shape of the plant and encourage growth. You can use the detached segments as cuttings, if dried and kept warm for a week, to create more plants. Check that your houseplants are getting enough light but don’t leave them too close to single-glazed windows on frosty nights. In the winter and early spring water your houseplants sparingly until the weather starts to warm up and they come into active growth.

March is a good time to dig a new pond, so the showers of April can help to fill it up. Make sure that your pond is at least 2ft deep (at the deepest point) so that it does not fully freeze over. The pond shouldn’t be the same depth throughout; create sloping banks and shallow areas to promote wildlife and make it look more natural. A new pond can be prone to algae but filling the pond with rain water rather than tap water will reduce the problem. It also helps to introduce plants with floating leaves, like waterlilies, to create some shade. Spring is the time to start feeding the fish and remove any heaters from your pond. You can also clean out filters and water features for the new season. Look out for frogs, toads and newts, which begin to spawn as the spring arrives. If small children visit your garden then consider a mesh covering for your pond for safety – but make sure it still allows wildlife to access the pond.

Protect your home from burglars

O

ur sheds and outbuildings typically house tools, bikes and gardening equipment worth more than £1,000 and yet are easy prey for thieves. Sheds also often contain ladders and tools which a burglar can use to get into your home. This year consider installing a lockable chest for your valuable equipment and a new wireless intruder alarm which can be extended to cover sheds, garages and outbuildings. Peter George, owner of Malthouse Security at Rickinghall, near Diss, said: “Think about security lighting for garden areas in deep shadow, upgrade your outside lighting, fit a visual burglar alarm to the house and don’t leave ladders and tools outside that make it easy for burglars. “You can install locks for shed windows too and we advise security lighting and padlocks for an oil tank so you don’t lose your valuable oil for heating during the colder months.

“If you do choose a recordable CCTV system, give serious consideration to including a dedicated video recorder securely located within your home. “If you connect the cameras to your household video recorder and you are burgled, not only could the recorder be taken, but the recorded evidence with it. “Contact us and we can help you stay safer this year.” Call security system installer Malthouse Security today on 01379 890 606, email sales@ malthouse-security.co.uk or visit the website www.malthouse-security.co.uk for more details of how the company can help your home, or your business.

How to sell your Historically, the best time to sell a country house was in the spring. However, in recent years buying patterns have changed somewhat and it’s nothing to do with global warming or the change in the seasons. When the children go back to school after the Christmas break, enquiry levels increase every day and these early season house hunters tend to be serious buyers rather than summer holidaymakers. Therefore it’s no longer necessary to withhold marketing your property until the spring, but it is important to present your home to show it off at its best. The presentation of your property is really important when you want to sell your home. We have all read about de-cluttering the house and baking bread or putting on the coffee to make the house appear welcoming, but it is equally important to tidy up the grounds and ensure that the first impression of the property is good.

house this season A tip which I find makes a huge difference is putting down fresh shingle or gravel on the drive or parking areas – you would be amazed at the outcome. Secondly, rake up the leaves, cut the hedges and edge the lawns – again the transformation will surprise you. De-clutter outside as well – get rid of old cars, boats and caravans, ensure that there is plenty of room for viewers to park and turn around. Make them feel welcome by opening the gate before they arrive and, most importantly, put those over-friendly dogs in a kennel or in their crates! Prospective purchasers come to look at the house and must not be distracted and aside from this some people are nervous of dogs. All or any of the above tips may seem obvious, but are well worth embracing and will certainly give you a better chance of selling and indeed achieving the best possible price. With reference to price, pricing a property accurately is of paramount importance and it is therefore necessary to employ an experienced agent to ensure the guide price is correct.

Local craftsman keeps tradition alive

Trevor Clarke has worked as a traditional plasterer and pargetter for the past 34 years and as time passes he still gets as much satisfaction from his work as ever. The traditional craft of pargetting, a decorative form of plastering, dates back to Tudor times and is particularly associated with our region. Trevor has a keen interest in the history the craft and the buildings he works on, and uses his knowledge and experience to give each building a new lease of life.

Trevor’s work has been featured in various books and over the years he has acquired excellent references and a qualification in heritage plastering which enables him to work on Grade 1 listed buildings. He has created a wide range of pargetting work including plants, birds, animals and friezes such as wild rose, oak leaves, acorns, hares and owls. No job is the same so Trevor will always spend time speaking to the customer and discussing the unique needs of each building, whether it’s a listed building or a modern home.

Go-ahead Gissingg

ith around just 200 residents, Gissing is one of South Norfolk’s smaller villages. Walking round its quiet lanes, you might be tempted to call it sleepy but over the last two years, it has won itself nearly £1 million of lottery funding for community projects. In 2017 that money will be making itself felt. The village’s new community building is well on the way to completion and in the spring, work to repair and improve Gissing‘s beautiful 12th century roundtowered church, will begin. What is really impressive, and what makes living in Gissing so special, is that although these achievements were initiated and directed by small groups of dedicated people, they have involved a very wide range of local talents. While some villagers drew up the business plans and justifications demanded by the Lottery, others

used their professional skills and equipment for more practical work. And although the two projects were bid for by separate village charities, there has been co-operation – and money saving – wherever possible. The new community building has been specifically designed to make life better for people here by attracting more services into the village. The improvements to the church are similarly expected to bring in more visitors and users. I came to live in Gissing as much by chance as anything but, having been part of its extraordinary achievements over the last few years, as well as some of its more regular but equally satisfying activities, I count myself very lucky. With thanks to Frances ances King. King

n 1977 Mike Harvey came up with the idea of renovating the old control tower at Thorpe Abbotts Airfield to form a living museum dedicated to personnel of the 100th Bomb Group, U.S. 8th Air Force who served at the base during the Second World War. Several like-minded people agreed and the landowner Sir Rupert Mann was approached, a 999 lease was agreed and volunteers started to clear a corner of the old airfield which included the control tower. More members of the local community got involved and the control tower, which had fallen into disrepair, was restored to its former glory. In 1983, all their hard work was rewarded when the museum was officially dedicated with many 100th Bomb Group veterans from the U.S. in attendance.

FEATURED ARTISTS – DAVIDE LAKSHMANASAMY www.davidelart.com This Italian-born, Singapore-raised, Norwichnurtured young artist talks of process as a means for discovery and understanding. Studying structure via deconstruction, fabrication and identity within his production makes for a sizeable learning experience. Davide’s perception of the theme ‘Beauty and Decay’ features amongst other subjects in the foundations of his making. With this, the idea of ‘the beautiful’ and ‘the ugly’ are conjoined, transmitting a more pleasurable impression to the spectator. Language within art is essential when we attempt translation. Here, we see a conversation between diverse materials working with and against one another, ultimately learning to master unfamiliar qualities assigned by the artist. This dialogue constructs the illusion that the materials share dominance throughout their durational existence, not dissimilar to the rules of turn taking in speech. Much of what we portray as artists can be assigned a formula composed through experience with particular things during our childhoods. A raw connection between Davide’s infancy and professional practice surfaced. Imagery of scaffolding, skyscrapers and a small boy assembled this tactile, deconstructive practice,

48

Norwich Contemporaries dismantling and fragmenting in order to rebuild a far more accessible and interactive playground. November 2016 saw Davide in residency alongside sound artist Bene Pooley, located at Dove Street Studios, hosted by Norwich Arts platform Dyad Creative. Suspended high above the audience, the work formed immense shadows that drenched the room; fitting, as the piece was originally mounted on the water for the Waveney River Trail. As the light and sound penetrated the weighty waves of metal, the experiential ensemble seemed to force and indent the negative space around the sculpture. The bassy soundtrack of machinery in use lay heavy on me as I stood watching the tremendous form in very slight motion. I envisioned looking up in my innocence, to the madness of the world moving around me, voiceless and uninformed. Occupying vast physical space, Davide aims to

instigate reactions in viewers while they observe the piece reacting to its new self. Extracting the typically grotesque from our surroundings, he forges a new ordinary, redefining the beautiful, which is attained through trial and error; through experience. It is a practice founded on playfulness and satisfaction with collaborative experience at the heart of his intentions. This is the justification of his freedom to make. Watch out for new additions to Davide’s collection online and for forthcoming shows in East Anglia.

EMMA CRACKNELL www.emmaleecracknell.co.uk On occasion, language fails us. That is why the maker makes, the dancer dances, and precisely why the painter paints. Painting is a very traditional means of preserving a moment in time. Generation after generation have been inspired to pursue this creative art of skill and technique, encouraging contemporaries like Emma Cracknell to take on the conventional gallery’s white cube, employing this very immersive medium. Exposing solitary instances through the application of colour, her practice aspires to provide a place within each piece for the onlooker to speculate, but most notably, to think. Capturing a specific point, instance, occurrence, colour, or even transitory feeling, is not dissimilar to the style of highly acclaimed artist Mark Rothko. Emma sheds clarity on the difference between a photograph and a painting; how many people can feature in a piece, and how even more people can be looking at said piece,

but that no one person will ever possess the same perception; no one instant is entirely shared. It is this perception and found place within the everyday that fuels her drive towards making. Studying for her Honours and Masters degrees at Norwich University of the Arts, which she refers to as ‘the creative island of free thinking’, Emma identified themes within her practice regarding the denial of visual information and the desire to acquire said material. This examination led to the execution of an artwork coined her final and most conclusive piece to date; the painting made for her Masters Show. It was a representation of the drive that pulled her through education, the state of euphoria gained through acquired conceptual weight, but predominantly, it was a celebration of passion. She tells me how painting is as much an asset as a personality is. How that when she paints she is arrested by this nonphysical place, buried in pleasure. The visual aspects of Emma’s practice have transposed through her artistic career from oils in a heavy Prussian Blue balanced with Payne’s Grey, through to Titanium White and Cadmium Red. These pigments have been selected to portray a very honest, definite conceptual affair. The desire to paint, ability to make beautiful, and to craft a simplified edition of a complex matter, has made for a highly determined work ethic, making Emma Cracknell one to watch. Featuring in Aesthetica Magazine and Vogue UK, this Emma’s online presence will certainly prove captivating. Kristy Campbell kristycamp17@gmail.com instagram: kristycamp kristycamp.tumblr.com

Standing up for sitting down Charity Anchor is ‘Standing Up 4 Sitting Down’ as it calls on shops to do their bit to reduce older people’s loneliness and health issues by providing seating. A recent report found that older people are unable to engage in cultural and social activities, such as visiting shops, cafes, restaurants and theatres, as much as they would like to due to a lack of places to rest. As well as impacting economic growth, Anchor’s campaign highlights the link between poor accessibility and a lack of seating to loneliness and the related health problems it causes.

go out to shop less due to a lack of seating

Anchor resident Nona Hall, 93, from Attleborough, Norfollk said: “Being independent is so important to me. Even with my walker, it would be very difficult for me to make it to the shops without stopping for a rest part way. More seating would allow me to be more active and venture a bit further into town on my own. It would make it more enjoyable and stop me from missing out.” For more information about Standing Up 4 Sitting Down and to lend your support to the campaign, go to www.su4sd.org.uk, call 0800 731 2020 or join the conversation on Twitter using #su4sd.

How to avoid a

W

ith many retailers promoting ‘Spring Sales’ and ‘Perfect Mother’s Day Gifts’, scammers will be doing their best to hide in the crowd and ply their trade. Personal information and credit card details are the best present you can give these canny criminals – they can use your details to make purchases, or sell them on to someone else. So where will they attack? Scammers see an email inbox as the perfect phishing spot. Long gone are the obvious messages from Nigerian officials looking to share vast sums of money with you and all you need to do is pay the ‘fees.’ Today, these criminals will use cleverly disguised messages that mimic a true brand or be vague enough in the detail to trick people into clicking the malicious links or opening the attachment. As scammers continue to hone their craft, it becomes harder and harder to weed out the good emails from the bad. But it’s not impossible. Take five minutes and look for these five clues: 1. Have you interacted with the brand before, or do you know the person asking for help? If not – junk it.

online 2. Is it too good to be true? If what’s on offer seems ‘unbelievable’ then it probably is. 3. Another common theme is a “delivery confirmation” from Hermes, DHL, Parcelforce, DPD, UPS, FedEx, and TNT that must be opened via a .zip attachment. DO NOT OPEN THIS ATTACHMENT. Big postal and package delivery services never send .zip attachments, so it’s probably a fraud. 4. This follows to the next point – hover over all URL links within the email. If Amazon sends you a sale alert, and there’s a link to a gadget, take two seconds to hold your mouse over the link before clicking. If it shows amazon. co.uk or smile.amazon.co.uk, you’re good to click. If it shows akljfaasedaf.com, Amazon definitely didn’t send you that deal! 5. Use your common sense – if you smell a rat, or a phish, don’t take the bait. Phishing scams are among the most prevalent forms of cybercrime, especially in the UK, but knowing what to look out for will help keep you safe.

STORIES FROM OUR REGION

Tom Blackmore

W

and the School Inspector

hen I was a young valuer at Boardmans in the early 60s we used to go round to the farmers doing their annual valuations for income tax. There were loads of small farmers then; they were the salt of the earth and the backbone of the village communities. One such small farmer was Tom Blackmore, who farmed in our region. Tom would always have a plate of shortbread and a cup of tea ready for you and he always had a story to go with it.

Now, when the Corn Exchange closed and the agricultural reps got cars they would call round on the farmers making themselves a damned nuisance. So Tom put up a big sign in his yard saying: ‘Callers Strictly Only by Appointment’.

later, Tom was working in his barn when a smart clean car roared up into the farmyard and drew up. “Mr Blackmore?” said the man, getting out in his pinstripe suit and black polished shoes. “I want a word with you. You’ve been keeping your son away from school,” he shouted across the yard. “And without permission.” “Well,” said Tom, “he’s leaving school in a fortnight and I thought it would do him good to learn about drilling.” “Don’t you want your son to learn to read and write?” said Pinstripe. “Yes,” said Tom, “but you can’t read can you?” “Of course I can read, don’t be ridiculous, man!” came the reply.

Tom’s son Bugsy was only about a fortnight away from finishing school when Tom badly needed a hand on the drill. He said to Bugsy: “Don’t you go back to school, boy, you come and give me a hand,” which he duly did.

“You certainly can’t read,” said Tom. “Otherwise you’d have read my sign up there! Now be off with you!” And Tom never heard any more from Pinstripe.

Now, Tom could have told the school a lie about his son’s absence, but being an honest to goodness man, he wrote a note telling the truth. A few days

Crime And Punishment

N

In this issue, with the help of old newspapers, Sarah Doig uncovers what happened to our local forebears when they fell foul of the law.

ineteenth-century rural life in this region was tough. With much of the agricultural work being seasonal, families often resorted to stealing. Local newspapers from the 1800s are simply littered with reports of trials of individuals for stealing food, livestock and clothing; in fact, anything they could either consume themselves or sell on to get some money to feed the family. Punishments handed down to petty criminals were severe by modern standards. For instance, the Norwich Mercury reported on the Norfolk Quarter Sessions in January 1859 which included the following men who all pleaded guilty to their offences: John Smith (20), a labourer, who stole a female ass, belonging to Ann Bailey of East Carleton. He was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment with hard labour. Edgar Clarke (25), bricklayer, broke into the house of James Scarfe at Starston and stole a cloth coat and other clothes to the value of £5, as well as several tools. Edgar was sent to jail for nine months. William Johnson was sentenced to 21 days’ hard labour for stealing a pair of trousers and a waistcoat. Hard labour in prison might mean quarrying or building roads. But often it meant working the treadmill, where prisoners had to endlessly step on a giant wheel. Some wheels powered machinery to grind corn but there was usually no end product. Critics called it “the most tiresome, exemplary punishment that has ever been contrived by human ingenuity”.

A prison treadmill

68

Some criminals escaped hard labour. The Suffolk Chronicle of 13 January 1838 recorded that: Elizabeth Knott, a respectably dressed female, was indicted for stealing 3 lbs of Suffolk A nineteenth century cheese, the property of Mr gamekeeper W Garrard of Gislingham. Guilty, but recommended to mercy – Imprisonment for one month in solitary confinement. It is difficult to see how this punishment was more lenient than she might have received, although perhaps solitary confinement was better than having to work the dreaded treadmill. One of the most common local crimes in rural parts in the Victorian era was poaching. East Anglia was home to numerous country houses, owned by the rich who liked to indulge in gentlemanly sports like hunting and shooting. As a result, many country estates had thousands of rabbits, hares and game birds which proved a great temptation to working class families eager to feed their children. According to the Norwich Mercury, Charles Paul, a brickmaker of Costessey, appeared in the local court in December 1891 to answer a charge of night poaching on the Earlham estate. He had been found with four pheasants, one of which had only recently been shot, together with gun and ammunition. Charles admitted the offence, adding that he was sorry but that he was out of work and had three children at home ill. Even though Charles had been fined for the same offence a month earlier, the magistrates took pity on him and jailed him for just 14 days.

Get on your bike, get fit and all for a good cause Sign up now to ride the Nine Town Sportive! This summer, Diss in South Norfolk will again turn into the cycling centre of the region with the second annual Diss Cyclathon on 25th June. It will include organised rides for all ages and abilities along with lots of stalls and entertainment for the whole family. It will also host the Nine Town Sportive which challenges riders to tackle 25, 50 or 100 mile routes around the beautiful lanes of Norfolk and Suffolk with the 100 mile route taking in nine of the area’s market towns. Organiser Alan Franks said “We had such positive feedback from last year’s Cyclathon that we simply didn’t have any choice but to run it again in 2017. We’re also aiming to make it bigger and better with space for twice as many riders this year so hopefully we’ll raise even more money to support local cycling as well as our partner charity East Anglian Air Ambulance. More than anything, however, it is about celebrating all the fantastic things about cycling in Norfolk and Suffolk and getting all the family in to Diss to enjoy the day.”

Holly Noon from East Anglian Air Ambulance said: “With the charity receiving no direct government funding, the East Anglian Air Ambulance relies on the generosity of individuals and events such as this across the region to continue the lifesaving service our outstanding helicopters and crew provide in East Anglia, 365 days a year. We’re delighted to be working with Diss Cyclathon for a second year and hope that the 1000 riders in the Nine Town Sportive will support us too with their fundraising and sponsorship.” Find out more at disscyclathon.org and sign up for the Nine Town Sportive today.

Pancake Day

L

ent is the time of abstinence for Christians. It starts on Ash Wednesday and finishes 40 days later on Easter Sunday, when it is the tradition to give eggs (mainly chocolate ones now). Fat, butter and eggs are traditionally strictly forbidden during Lent so it has become a custom to eat up all this prohibited food that remained on the day before - Shrove Tuesday, and to fry them up to make pancakes. Thus, this Tuesday is now known as Pancake Day. Students of the English language have traced the word ‘Shrove’ to be the past tense of the verb shrive, which means absolution.

This year Pancake Day is 28 February, and all over the country busy mums and dads will be making their own form of pancakes for their family. The traditional way to make a pancake is to sieve some flour and salt into a basin, make a well in the centre and break two eggs, one at a time, into the well. The mixture is then gradually beaten together adding milk, little by little, to make a creamy batter. This should be whisked to aerate it and then left to stand for about an hour. A frying pan should then be heated with a little butter and with a ladle, sufficient batter poured in to cover the bottom of the pan. Then it should be cooked for a couple of minutes or until the batter is dry, and then turned over to cook on the other side. The method of turning the pancake usually takes the form of tossing it into the pan from one side to the other. Once brown the pancake is turned out on to a plate ready to be embellished. Still the most popular is the lemon juice and sugar, perhaps with a hint of honey. However, over the last hundred

72

Flipping Fantastic

years all sorts of alternative embellishments, both sweet and savoury, have come into fashion, some have remained, many have disappeared. Pancakes may be eaten flat or folded three ways. There are variations to make pancakes in different parts of the UK. For instance, Scottish pancakes are smaller but thicker. Welsh pancakes are normally made with buttermilk, sour cream or cream and have tiny holes in their cooked surface. Once cooked they are placed on top of each other on n a large plate and the top one spread heavily with butter which seeps through to each pancake. All sorts of races take place on Pancake Day. The most famous is perhaps the one in the villagee of Olney in Buckinghamshire, said to date back to 1445, where only women are allowed to compete. They wear a traditional housewife headscarf and apron, and carry their pancake in a frying pan which has to be tossed three times before reaching the church. The winner receives a prayer book from the vicar and a kiss from the bell-ringer.

Q&A HEALTH Q:

I think I have constipation what can I do to get things moving?

A:

Constipation is one of the most common digestive complaints with 25% of people affected, most often due to a diet of refined foods, inactivity or stress. It occurs when food moves too slowly through the digestive tract and too much moisture is reabsorbed by the large intestine. Making sure that you are sufficiently active and exercising is key and it is crucial to remember that diet is important too. Often small dietary changes or a more active lifestyle can make a big difference. Remember that certain medicines – prescribed and over-the-counter – can lead to constipation.

Do eat lots of fruits and vegetables, drink plenty of water and take a good probiotic acidophilus capsule daily to maintain the friendly bacteria in your gut. Try Optibac Acidophilus capsules or Solgar MultiBillion capsules. Another excellent product from your health food shop is called Linoforce. It contains linseed, coated with senna and frangula and is a licensed herbal remedy for relief of constipation. Chew the granules well and take with plenty of water. How healthy are your gums?

G

um disease affects 80 per cent of adults and 50 per cent of teenagers in the UK but what is it and how do you know if you have it?

Periodontal or gum disease is caused by germs which live in your mouth. The bacteria stick to your teeth and if they are not removed with regular brushing and flossing they will irritate the gums. If left untreated, gum disease will destroy the attachment of the gum to the tooth causing your gums to recede, teeth to become loose and eventually fall out! Everyone is susceptible to mild gum disease but smokers are more likely to get severe gum disease. If you have the early stages of the disease you may not notice a problem at first but the signs to look out for are red and swollen gums, bleeding when you clean your teeth or bite into hard foods or bad breath.

Treating the early stages of gum disease is quite straightforward. Your dentist may recommend that you see a dental hygienist to remove plaque and tartar, floss and polish your teeth to leave your mouth feeling clean and fresh. You will also be shown hygiene techniques to use at home to maintain good oral hygiene. For more severe cases of periodontal disease your dentist may refer you for intensive periodontal treatment, which will include the removal of plaque, tartar and calculus from the periodontal pockets. After treatment, your gums will be healthier, bleeding and soreness will reduce, your breath h will be fresher and your teeth may feel firmer. With thanks to Bryan Colborn BDS (Lond) LDS RCS (Eng), PG Dip (Clinical Periodontology) from Guildhall Dental.

Cheap beauty products - too good to be true? So you’ve just found that fantastic cure-all beauty product online and it’s a snip at 20% off. Out comes the debit card and moments later that package is winging its way to you. Quick, efficient, cheap and very possibly illicit. We all love bargains but that old adage ‘too good to be true’ can frequently be applied to such purchases. Welcome to the ‘Grey Market’ – not the buying power of the superannuated and retired – but the trade of commodities or products through unofficial or unauthorised distribution channels. It’s also known as diversion and currently diverts up to $63 billion of U.S. industry sales each year. That’s death to some brands by either destroying their profit margin or credibility. Many products are the real thing but still might be very close to use-by dates or in old or damaged packaging.

pH to that of high acidity. But put in a well-known branded bottle who’s to worry about that? New security software is used by some of the major names to monitor sales and track illegal distributors but its not available to everyone so consumers must play their part in being vigilant. Check the three P’s. Price: If a luxury brand doesn’t usually discount and it’s suddenly really affordable, it’s best to steer clear. Packaging: Check logos, colours and spelling to see if they match up with usual quality expected. Lastly, look at the Point of Sale. If the vendor’s site looks dubious it’s best to buy direct from the brand itself, or its authorised distributors and stockists. You might pay the market price – but that’s better than paying for it in other, less pleasant, ways.

Much is plain old counterfeit and that’s a pain in the credit card if you find out your Rolex is fake but when you’re buying personal goods such as perfume or cosmetics there is a real element of danger when you’re unsure of the provenance. Unauthorised sellers are flogging cut price counterfeit cosmetics on line with expired, degraded or back-street concoctions which, due to chemical changes or additives could endange er health and safety. What our advertisers say Advertising in Village People really works – but don’t just take our word for it! Village People has built my business significantly over the last 3 years. I always ask new enquires how they found me and VP comes up all the time. People I speak with really enjoy the magazine and all the editorial there is to read.

Robert Foulger Lake & Pond Aquatics 01379 652720 www.lakeandpond-aquatics.co.uk We are getting lots of calls from Village People. The best ad / promotion we have done to date.

Gard’n’ Cox Garden Care 01359 221220 gardncox@hotmail.com

I always know when the latest Village People magazine has dropped through the letterboxes, our phone gets even busier! When I ask customers where they’ve heard of us, 9 times out of 10 it is through our advert in Village People. It is always good to hear readers praise the magazine too, giving me reassurance that I chose the best publication to advertise in! I would definitely recommend this magazine to any local business if you are looking to grow your business.

Sylvia Smit h Ticketyboo Cleaning Agency 01379 871995 www.ticketyboocleaning.com

As a provider of care services to individuals in their own homes, many of whom are isolated and rural, it was vital that we found a source of communication that would reach these sectors in an eyecatching and interesting way. We have worked with Village People since their launch 8 years ago and have been delighted with their flexible approach to our advertising needs, as well as their commitment to increasing their coverage in line with feedback from customers such as us. The publication is professional and innovative and most importantly delivers the results we need at a price that is fair and competitive.

Smart Money Secrets

Peer to peer could be a more rewarding option for your nest egg B Andrew A d H i d d t personall fifinance analyst l t ffrom www.moneycomms.co.ukk By Hagger independent

I

t’s been a miserable time for savers in recent years with interest rates gradually edging closer to zero, making it nigh on impossible to get any meaningful return on your nest egg. With rates at rock bottom and further cuts taking place every week maybe now’s the time to consider an alternative and potentially more rewarding home for your savings such as peer to peer lending. The returns from peer to peer providers look more appealing than ever (with RateSetter for example offering 3.7% for a 1 year bond as I write this) and are in a different league from the best 1 year fixed rate ISAs with very few products paying 1% or above. In cold, hard cash terms 1.00% interest on the maximum cash ISA allowance of £15,240 would give you an annual interest return of £152.40 compared with a far healthier £563.88 from the RateSetter 1 year bond option. Zopa remains the biggest player in the peer to peer marketplace and is equally competitive with its rates. It currently boasts more than 59,000 investors, not surprising when you see that at present it offers a 3.9% return for up to 5 years. RateSetter is becoming one of the fastest growing P2P firms and saw an inflow of £60 million in the last month alone. It even offers a monthly access account paying 2.6% (at the time of writing) – so if you’re a little nervous

or unsure if this is right for you, you can dip your toe in the water and try it out with a minimum deposit of just £10. One of the main concerns with peer to peer providers has been that although the returns far outweigh those paid by the banks, they don’t offer the cast iron guarantee to savers that bank customers enjoy under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. Providers have their own methods in place to protect depositors. RateSetter for example maintains a ‘provision fund’ with a balance of more than £22 million built up from borrower fees. The fund is used to reimburse lenders in the case of late payment or default. This safety net has ensured that since it started over six years ago, every penny of capital and interest has been returned to every single lender. Peer to peer is here to stay and as long as providers keep rates competitive and bad debt levels under control, there’s no doubt in my mind that P2P will become an even bigger thorn in the side of the traditional banks. If you’re fed up with the miserly bank and building society tax free deals this year, maybe it’s time to look elsewhere. Always seek independent professional financial advice before making any investment decision.

Village wanderings Geldeston and Beccles

The River Waveney divides this walk of two counties: Suffolk and Norfolk. Starting in the Suffolk market town of Beccles and following the Angles Way, the route crosses the river into Norfolk at the historic Locks Inn, Geldeston. Continuing through the village, a riverside walk on the north of the river then leads you back to Beccles. Distance: approximately 7.2 miles. Using OS Explorer Map OL40. Start: grid ref: TM 423912, sat nav: NR34 9BH.

3 The round-towered medieval church of St Michael is Geldeston’s earliest surviving building. The village once had three pubs and a brewery: the Locks and the Wherry Inn still survive, but the Garden House retains only its name. This meandering wall looks as though its builder might have been ‘under the influence’!

The Big Dog Ferry operates between Beccles Lido and the Geldeston Locks Inn along the beautiful River Waveney. From Easter to October there are five trips daily, the 40-minute boat ride being an ideal way to view the wildlife and tranquil scenery. (www.bigdogferry.co.uk)

2 The Locks Inn is said to have been built in the 1560s, first as a mill-keeper’s cottage, later being used by lock keepers. Wherries and other craft hauled goods from the seaports through the lock (one of four) to Bungay. It was granted a public license in the 17th century at a time when its marshy remoteness was a haven for cross border smuggling. Now a freehouse but still without mains supplies, the pub is frequented by more law-abiding walkers and boaters.

The Waveney valley provides ideal habitat for the ‘ghost’ or barn owl. This barn owl box was one of three spotted en route.

Walked on a bright January day with fieldfares and redwings ‘talking’ of long journeys from the north. The marshes were partly flooded, tempting ‘darts’ of teal with their wild, high-pitched whistling calls. As a result of this mild winter, premature signs of spring were seen in the flowering of dead nettles and violets.

1 The riverside market town of Beccles is dominated by the 16th-century bell tower of St Michael’s church. The town Museum is housed in the building that was once Sir John Leman High School, founded in 1631. The town sign depicts the granting of the charter by Queen Elizabeth I to John Baas in 1584.
