LOCAL STUDENTS VOLUNTEER IN HONDURAS AND PERU Before taking up their university places, current Culford School Upper Sixth students, Sophie Jamil and Eve Holder, are spending 12 months volunteering with the charity, Project Trust.

Starting this August, Sophie will be helping disadvantaged children by teaching English in a primary school in Honduras. Meanwhile, Eve will be providing social care in an orphanage in Peru.

After a rigorous selection process, they have been tasked to raise the money required to support them as they volunteer throughout the year. Both girls have been busy raising funds in many ways, alongside their A level studies – for example, Eve recently did a sponsored skydive and Sophie has been re-selling donated goods online.

HOPE AND HOMES FOR CHILDREN Imagine growing up not knowing what a family is; not having the sense of belonging, comfort, nurturing, protection and security that a family provides. This type of upbringing is what charity Hope and Homes for Children are working to eradicate.

Supporters Roz Williams and Sharron Whales will be carrying out the Love in Every Step Trek in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania from 11 to 18 September, to raise funds for the charity.

MENDHAM CROWNED “SUFFOLK’S MOST ACTIVE SMALL VILLAGE 2015” The Eastern Enterprise Hub, Ipswich, have recently unveiled a brass plaque naming Mendham “Suffolk’s Most Active Small Village 2015”.

The award was given in recognition of the parish’s many weekly classes at the village hall, including keep fit, PiYo, line dancing and TaiChi. There is also a flood-lit Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) available for football,

tennis, basketball and netball all year round.

The community also hosts an annual inter-village rounders competition, and a pub versus parish cricket match. Other active groups include the Community Council, Youth Club, Bell Ringers, Choir, W.I. and the Over 60’s.

Work is even due to start soon on the installation of a boules piste in

the grounds of the village hall.

FIRM SCOOPS GOLD AT 2016 UK COACH AWARDS Norfolk-based family holiday firm, Eastons Holidays, has received the gold award for their 2016 Tour Programme at the recent National UK Coach Industry Awards, held in Manchester on April 21.

WYMONDHAM MUSIC FESTIVAL 2016 21st Festival returns from Friday 1 July to Saturday 16 July Celebrating its 21st birthday, Wymondham Music Festival fortnight kicks off on Friday 1st at Central Hall with the Festival Ceilidh, featuring Whirligig at 7.30pm.

Wymondham High Academy will then officially launch festival fortnight in the Market Place at 10am till 12 noon the following day.

The festival’s largest event, the Jazz Picnic, returns to Becketswell on Monday 4th from 6.30pm till 9pm, with Simon Nelson’s Dixie Mix - and the popular Teddy Bears’ Picnic for the under fives will be held at Kings Head Meadow on Sunday 10th from 11am till 1pm.

Folk fans have a real treat in store; Hannah Sanders and Ben Savage will be at Central Hall, supported by Wymondham’s own Johnny Steinberg & The Bluefish on Friday 8th at 8pm.

Also at Central Hall, local talent will feature at Wymondham Entertains on Thursday 14th at 8pm, followed by gutsy blues from Spikedrivers at The Regal (Ex Servicemens Club) on Friday 15th at 8pm.

Natalie lost 10 stone to avoid type 2 diabetes - and is now getting married Natalie Williams’s snacking eventually saw her weight jump to almost 21 stone and on the verge of diabetes she turned her life around, losing 10 stone.

Achieve new goals

with hidden health club

T

ucked away next to the Diss High School, it would be easy not to have come across Heywood Health and Fitness club.

The club, owned by Tom and Amy Bobbins, was founded in the 70s as a squash club and it has since evolved to become the diverse health and fitness centre it is today.

Tom and Amy took over the club three years ago, with an aim to create a supportive and friendly environment where the members feel comfortable – regardless of their age, shape, size or fitness ability. To help them achieve this goal, they removed all of the free weights and heavylifting machines and replaced them with practical, easy to use equipment and increased floor space.

Heywood Health & Fitness boasts three solid-wall squash courts (including a glass-backed show court), three floodlit tennis courts, astro turf, a toning gym and a studio, which holds 11 state-of-the-art spinning bikes.

The club has a very busy class schedule, with regular spinning sessions, due to popular demand! There are also weekly classes in aerobics, pilates and circuits.

In addition, Amy has brought a new range of classes to the timetable since the start of the year under “The Jungle Body” brand. It offers five programmes, called Konga, Vyper, Jagua, Burn and Tyga. So far, classes have been very well received and are proving very addictive!

Tom runs 15 internal squash leagues, plus two club teams in the Norfolk league, as well as being a Level 2 ERSA coach. Tom puts his coaching to good use with weekly racketball sessions held on Tuesday evenings at the club for all ages and abilities.

Heywood Health and Fitness is currently developing the club’s social area, with its lounge refurbishment, including a fully licensed bar, almost due for completion.

Nutritious drinks and light snacks are also being planned for the menu.

“We have a wonderful demograph of members here and it is great to see them brought together through the club,”

said Tom.

“Our plan is to make Heywood Health and Fitness the busiest social venue within a five to 10-mile radius and somewhere people can wind down after exercise or just pop in and enjoy a drink with friends.”

The queen of carnivals Diss Carnival is in its 9th year and will take place on Sunday 12 June, with a procession theme of “Celebrating the Queen’s 90 years” led by Smokehouse Blue Marching Jazz Band.

Entertainment already booked includes Spider Web Mountain, Norwich Samba Band, Pete’s Inflatables, magician Sean Goodman (who recently had his own show at the St George Theatre, Great Yarmouth), Park Radio, Bazza Bizarre and SERV Norfolk Blood Bikes.

Demonstrations will include the Diss Woodturners Club, the Army Cadets, a farrier and Jowal Rangel, our local football juggling artist, who has won European competitions for his talent.

There will also be live music from local bands, including Purple Jimi (A Jimi Hendrix tribute), Revelation Brothers and Joe Aiken.

The carnival costs on average £6,000 to stage and part of that cost each year is offset by the entrance charges from the previous years’ event, fundraising and donations. The Carnival Committee however, have reduced this year’s entrance charge to £2 per adult, £1 per 10 to 16-year-olds and children under 10 go free.

Collecting provincial in al art inci ar Norwich’s prominence as a centre of provincial art started in the late 18th century, when it became home to a rapidly growing and developing artistic community.

There were many professional artists, drawing masters, scene, sign and heraldic painters, framers and gilders. In addition, the city and county as a whole attracted many eminent visiting artists, who found patrons among the county’s wealthy landowners.

This artistic activity in the city culminated in the founding of the Norwich Society of Artists

by John Crome (“Old Crome”) in 1803.

This was the first major provincial school of artists in the country and was the first provincial group to exhibit their work.

Four years after its formation, the group was joined by John Sell Cotman, one of Britain’s finest watercolour artists.

The society survived for over 30 years and was central to some famous artistic families, including Stark, Ladbrooke and Stannard to name a few. Out of the society also grew the Norwich School of Artists - excelling in landscape art.

After the demise of the Norwich Society of Artists there were many calls for facilities for local artists to hold major exhibitions. But it was not until 1885, when Edward Elliot and Robert Bagge Scott met with Charles John Watson, that firm proposals for Norwich Art Circle were developed.

Wigg (1889-1969) still grace walls of many homes, depicting beautiful scenes of the Broads in times gone by and - in the case of Leonard Squirrell (18931979) - many of East Anglia’s attractive towns and villages.

The circle rented a room in Old Bank of England Court for holding their meetings and exhibitions, and remained there for 10 years. Thus began an artistic group that continues to this day and whose list of members and exhibitors include many of the great artists of early 20th century Britain, including Arnesby Brown, Munnings and Seago.

Not only are we graced with a beautiful landscape which still draws artists from far and wide, but we also have abundant bird and other wildlife which has not escaped the notice of some of the country’s leading bird artists; JC Harrison and Rowland Green can hold their own in this field along with many of the greats.

There are so many others, who may not be so well known, but have contributed considerably to the rich tapestry of Norfolk art nonetheless.

And so we have to be grateful to our forefathers who started this regional artistic excellence and fought so hard to preserve and encourage it. The Antiques Fair at Dunston Hall always has a selection of paintings (pre-dating 1940) by local artists. Please pop along to the next fair to see them!

Open Gardens for a personal “thank you” “Get checked out dad,” my daughters kept telling me.

I had never thought about it and, despite the repeated plea, I never had time.

And then I did. I got checked and everything ything changed.

M

y name is Philip Greenacre. My wife Chris and I were farmers until our retirement in 2008. We had always worked hard, so in retirement we knew we needed a project. Chris loves gardening and I love Chris so it seemed natural when we bought Furze House in Rushall, with its two acres of land.

To be honest, when we moved in the garden was no more than lawn, with quite a few trees and four herbaceous beds.

The garden has evolved during the last eight years and now boasts over 50 beds full of shrubs, perennials and rare plants sourced from all over the UK and Europe.

We entered the National Garden Scheme yellow book in 2010 and received our five-year certificate in 2015.

The same year I was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

I had no symptoms, so going to the doctors was not a priority. I felt fine, but was gradually worn down by the determined nagging of my two daughters (no idea where they get that from).

The first test came back slightly higher than normal and the second test, three months later, showed an increase so I was referred to a urology consultant for a biopsy. The results stated that 50 per cent of the samples were cancerous. This was when the NHS, and especially the wonderful staff at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, really got going.

The first step wass a course of hormone tablets followed by hormone injections. I then became a member of the “37”club as I endured 37 days of radiotherapy. diotherapy.

It was hard - there is no getting away from that - but the staff at the NNUH were nothing short of exceptional. Everyone always had a smile and was always positive.

Chris and I felt we needed to give something back to the NNUH for the marvellous treatment I had received, and we could see no better way than to reopen our garden to raise funds for the radiotherapy department.

So that is what we are doing with two open weekends this year, plus all the“by appointment”group visits.

And if you are wondering, this February I got the all clear! So my advice to all those gentlemen out there of a certain age: listen to the nagging and get yourself checked.

en years… impossible! Ten years… really? Yes, it’s our tenth birthday, and we can’t believe how quickly it has passed. I know in the big scheme of things it’s only a short space of time, but a decade… we must be doing something right.

Our customers know that they’ll find a wide range of plants here for all types of gardens, from the ordinary to the extra-ordinary, whether it’s trees, shrubs, perennials or seasonal bedding we’re here to help. For instance super tough shrubs such as dark-leaved Sambucus ‘Black Lace’, and fragrant Viburnun carlcephalum (as sweet smelling as a daphne without the fuss), to specialist shrub choices such as Cornus florida and chinensis (‘flowering’ dogwoods with amazing petallike bracts), Cercidiphyllum japonicum (its leaves fill the air with the smell of candy floss when they fall in the Autumn), or Piptanthus nepalensis (glossy leaves and black stems make an attractive backdrop for the bold yellow pea-like flowers in late Spring).

Almost all of our plants are sourced right here in East Anglia from dedicated nurserymen and women who grow an enormous selection of plants, which gives us the best quality at sensible prices, and means that if we haven’t got it in stock we may be able to find it for you.

For those of you who have been visiting since we opened, you’ll know that we pack a lot into a small space, and even as we have expanded over the years this hasn’t changed, more space has resulted in more choice to help you make the garden of your dreams.

Popular additions include timber arbours, and timber or metal arches, obelisks and trellis for beautiful climbers to scramble over or twine through. Blousy clematis, fragrant honeysuckles, exotic-looking kiwi, and wonderful wisterias will all put on a reliable show every year and are easy to grow (we supply grafted varieties of wisteria at flowering maturity so you won’t have to wait seven years or so for a blooming display!)

Alpine plants are once again in fashion, giving you

the chance to enjoy some of nature’s more diminutive treasures. With plenty of varieties to choose from, these miniature wonders look fantastic planted in shallow bowls topped off with a layer of horticultural grit or small stones. Choose a few containers to make an arrangement, or really go for it and create a rockery using stone from our selection of rocks and boulders, surrounded by a decorative weed-suppressing shingle or slate mulch.

Plants are a bit like pets, they need to be looked after, provided with food and water, given shelter from the elements, and trained to keep them under control. Our shop is stocked with everything you need to keep them happy, tools and quality composts, fertilisers and chemicals, water butts and hoses, canes and ties, and more. As we all like our creature comforts we also stock bird food and pet supplies for our wild and not so wild friends, plus gifts, greetings cards, preserves, sweets and snacks for everyone else.

TIPS FOR A QUENCHED GARDEN • Water butts - available from garden centres, water butts collect rainwater, allowing you to water the garden with what mother nature has already provided. You may also use old household water (as long as it it isn’t dirty or full of detergent) and pour it into the butt to recycle in the garden.

• Less of “little and often” - Whilst containers and hanging baskets need watering daily, watering elsewhere thoroughly two to three times a week encourages plants to put down roots in search of water rather than coming up to the surface. Try it!

• Trickle hoses - a length of old hose, punctured with little holes. Leave it running for about an hour under newly-planted hedges for best results.

• The key to successful planting - Soak the rootball in a bucket of water for about half a day for any shrub, tree or plant. Fill the planting hole with water about the same time and allow it to drain away. Now plant, fill the hole and water it well to give the plant a huge advantage.

The truth about ticks With the recent discovery of a new disease transmitted by ticks found in the UK, it is now more important than ever to understand ticks, the diseases they carry and methods of prevention available.

Ticks have four life stages and are related to the spider family.

There are approximately 20 different species of ticks in Britain.

Without the ability to jump or fly, they wait on vegetation for an animal (or “host”) to walk by before attaching themselves.

The diseases that ticks can carry are usually acquired through feeding on blood from one host to another, rather than being born with them.

Ticks can transmit many diseases; the most prevalent currently being Babesiosis.

Babesiosis infects red blood cells causing them to multiply and rupture. This condition results in anaemia and subsequent organ failure if not diagnosed and treated promptly, therefore this disease can quickly become fatal.

Another disease that can affect both you and your pets is Lymes disease. This is a bacterial infection caused by a tick bite that is usually identified by a distinctive rash on the skin.

Climate change and the adjustment of the Pet Travel Scheme - whereby it is no longer compulsory to use tick prevention before entering the UK - are both contributing factors towards an increase in the tick population.

To help keep your pets safe from ticks and their potential diseases, regular and specific products are recommended to prevent parasites. Please contact your vet for further information.

ou have ha got to wonder why people spend so much on a lump of metal with four wheels attached to each corner. At first it seems a bit daft, when all we want is a means of independent transport to get us around.

But the reason is that we are human - we have emotions… and egos. Some of us like to prove to our families, friends, colleagues and people we don’t even know, that we have done well for ourselves. Whatever “done well” actually means… either. I mean, in the UK we buy more convertibles than many other countries in Europe! Why, when most of the time our country is damp and overcast?

I guess doing well in the Western world is also about self-gratification and having an easy life. Let’s face it; we would rather have a cool, plush motor to ride around in than a jalopy. And that desire for pleasureseeking can override the practical side of us (what bank balance?) when we are choosing a car.

Again, it comes down to wanting to feel good. Going roofless when there’s a burst of sunlight in Britain generates a massive feeling of positivity.

The Evoque Convertible has a fabric roof that can be activated on the move as long as the car isn’t doing over 30mph. The five-layer rag-top will drop in 18 seconds and it will raise in 21 seconds.

The Evoque will seat four-up and, for a soft-top, it has a decent 251-litre boot too. The other nice thing is that the roof opens and closes quietly and it folds away tidily, instead of stacking-up on the tailgate.

Inside, the massive 10.2 inch InControl Touch Pro nav is attractive - and, more importantly, it works really well. Truly, the “pinch-to-zoom” function is as quick as an iPad. You can choose either petrol or diesel, supported

On and off-road, the soft-covered SUV seems just as accomplished as its tin-topped sibling. Indeed, at the car’s media launch in the French Alps, the Evoque eased up, down and through everything requested of it - including snow.

We’re in the Mediterranean Melanzane Parmigiana

S

o the sunshine has come and gone, and come and gone again – as has the rain. There are times during the Great British summer when you need to do something to bring back that warm summer glow. And I’ve found it with this Mediterranean delight!

Perfect for al fresco entertaining; it is a wonderfully light but satisfying sharing dish.

Here’s my take on Melanzane parmigiana.

Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 1 hour

Ingredients:

2 medium aubergines, thinly sliced and sprinkled with salt (to draw out the moisture) 1 large red onion, finely chopped 1 vegetable stock cube 1 tin chopped tomatoes 150 ml red wine 1 bunch fresh basil, roughly chopped 1 tsp dried oregano 2-3 garlic cloves, finely chopped ½ tsp dried chilli flakes (optional) 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp soy sauce 1 tsp sugar 150 g fresh buffalo mozzarella, thinly sliced 150 g mature cheddar, grated Salt and cracked black pepper, to taste Olive oil (for frying)

Method: • In a griddle pan, fry the aubergine slices on both sides to seal them, until they are all golden brown.

Put them to one side.

• Now gently soften the onions, garlic, chilli, half the basil, oregano, balsamic, soy and crumble in the vegetable stock cube.

• Pour in the red wine and bring to the boil, then stir in the chopped tomatoes and add the sugar.

• In a flat oven dish, layer in the aubergines until the dish is full. Pour over the tomato mixture until it covers the aubergines evenly, spreading it around if necessary.

• Now sprinkle over a layer of grated cheddar and follow with the slices of mozzarella.

• Bake at 180°C for 45 minutes to an hour, until it’s bubbling and the cheese is browning. If you like your cheese a bit crispy, put the dish under the grill for the last two to five minutes. (But keep an eye on it so it doesn’t burn!)

• Sprinkle over the remaining basil and serve with a fresh green salad and a side of sliced garlic herb toast.

In the third of the current series of articles, our local historian, Sarah Doig, delves into o our region’s old newspapers to discover how our ancestors spent their free time.

T

oday, with the benefit of both affordable travel to exotic locations and access to nature documentaries on television, we are familiar with wild animals from across the globe.

However, in the 19th century the only way most people would be able to experience such wild beasts were by visiting travelling shows such as the famous “Wombwell’s Menagerie”.

This large collection of animals included elephants, llamas, gnus, tigers, lions, zebras, polar bears, ostriches and pelicans, and they were transported around the country in wagons accompanied by a brass band. The Norfolk Chronicle of 4 January 1840 reported: “This splendid menagerie has, since our last notice of its arrival in Norwich, been visited by crowds of all ranks and ages. It certainly affords a very great treat as well to the intelligently curious as to the more careless or less informed observer to see so many noble and interesting specimens of remarkable animals”.

Wombwell’s Menagerie In times before recorded music was available to listen to in the comfort of your own home, concerts were a popular form of leisure activity. These ranged from large-scale events - with visiting professional orchestras at venues including the Diss Cornhall to small parish fund-raising concerts, comprising recitations and musical “party pieces” played by locals.

One, rather odd, Victorian invention was the concept of “smoking concerts”. These were live performances, usually of music, but which sometimes took the form of readings or lectures, where the solely-male audience would smoke and talk about politics.

Our local newspapers contain accounts of such

events, including one in East Harling, as reported in the Diss Express in May 1890: “On Monday evening last a successful social smoking concert was held at the “Towel and Hammer” Inn. Mr Towell [chairman] stated that the concert was of a nonpolitical nature, and that no parish affairs were to be introduced. The East Harling Saxhorn Band, under the leadership of Mr George Barnard, gave selections [of music].”

During the second half of the 19th century, “reading rooms” started to appear in villages across Suffolk and Norfolk. These were often founded and run by the lord of the manor, local clergy and other prominent residents. One of the main aims was to The former reading room try to keep working in Walsham le Willows class men out of the public houses by providing alternative evening entertainment. It was hoped that the provision of newspapers, books and gentlemanly games would elevate labourers’ characters of mind and improve their conduct. The reading room in Walsham le Willows was founded in 1858, when a new building was constructed in the main street for this purpose.

Judging by the reports the region’s newspapers, members of neighbouring villages’ reading rooms often competed in closely-fought matches of the various games available in these rooms. The Bury and Norwich Post of 18 February 1890 records that, luckily, honours were shared in a competition of draughts and bagatelle held between teams from the Botesdale and Rickinghall reading rooms. Rickinghall won the draughts match by 12 games to six, but Botesdale defeated its rival in the bagatelle match.

Mulbarton Words Week returns!

A

fter a successful first year in 2015, the south Norfolk village of Mulbarton will once again be hosting a Festival of Words: spoken, sung and written, from June 5 to 11.

With a larger and more diverse range of events planned for 2016, the organisers hope that the week will attract even bigger audiences this year.

Amongst the offerings this summer will be an evening devoted to wildlife and natural history writers, including Mike Toms, author of Owls, from the British Trust for Ornithology, and an afternoon vintage tea party, with Phyllida Scrivens, who will be talking about her book, Escaping Hitler, the story of a Jewish boy’s flight from Nazi Germany and how he eventually became Sherriff of Norwich.

On Sunday, there will be a morning talk, an exhibition looking at the effect the Bible has had on English literature, and The Big Quiz - complete with an extra special table round this year - will take place in the World’s End pub in the evening.

My companion this time was a dear friend; 88 years of age, a pillar of the community, and a staunch Methodist (this matters – later).

The World’s End was warm and welcoming; a log fire crackled and a cheery lady showed us to a table and provided menus.

And what extensive menus they were: we had a choice of light lunches, specials, an OAP selection and a classic menu.

We both decided to go with the latter menu as we were both ready for a good-sized meal. I chose the chicken forestiére, which is a pan-fried chicken breast in a wild mushroom sauce, accompanied by seasonal vegetables. My companion chose the traditional homemade fish pie, which promised chunks of cod, prawns and leeks in a creamy white sauce, topped with cheesy mashed potato and vegetables.

I like to arrive early for lunch and this often means places appear to be sparsely occupied, but it filled up in no time at all.

I ordered a small glass of white wine and my companion had orange juice and, meanwhile, I noticed that a gentleman nearby received his chips served in a (clean) plant pot! I was worried the fish pie might come likewise so I asked if it could be decanted onto the plate for my friend, which they kindly did.

Th The service vic was just a tin tiny bit slo slow, but our having arrived on the dot of 12 noon probably accounted for that. When the food arrived, I was stunned to see so many vegetables – peas, carrots, mange tout and new potatoes – and lots of them. I can’t abide meals that are all protein and sauce, so five stars for that!

My chicken was deliciously enhanced by the sauce, which was composed of bacon, shallots, mushrooms and all sorts of delicious subtle flavours. The fish pie was stuffed to the gunnels with big chunks of fish, and all the other promised ingredients.

Not surprisingly, my friend had to admit defeat by leaving a little of it.

Being 88 allows all sorts of licence!

Even so, we both found space for pud. I had almost chosen the raspberry roulade but my friend beat me to it, and she finished it off, despite being a good-sized portion. Mine was a vanilla and toffee cheesecake with ice cream (or cream), and what a fabulous treat it was.

Suitably replete (after coffee and

mints urse) we wished them mints, of course) farewell and drove off – WITHOUT PAYING! Halfway home the cold realisation dawned on me and we returned post-haste; the reputation of my staunch Methodist friend and my reputation as Village People magazine’s restaurant writer intact.

Yes I certainly would go again! In the summer, to sit in the extensive outside area, maybe on Curry night (Wednesday) or Steak night (Thursday) or even the take-out fish and chip night (all week).

Sprucing up the garden Hartismere Place care home in Eye is a luxurious and welcoming home for older people, complete with its own coffee shop, cinema and hair and beauty salon.

Is hearing loss affecting your relationships?

One in six people in the UK experience some form of hearing loss. Your wife, husband or partner may be one of them.

• You are always being accused of mumbling and the frustration of them not being able to hear can lead to arguments.

Untreated hearing loss does not only affect an individual’s quality of life, it also has an impact on relationships - especially the most important ones.

This is because hearing loss affects one’s ability to communicate and, by definition, communication involves a least one other person.

Some or all of the scenarios below might sound familiar if you know somebody with hearing loss: • Telephone conversations turn into arguments and shouting because they cannot hear you properly. e.g.

You: “Please pick up some milk tonight.” Partner: “What about tonight?” You: “MILK, I said can you get some milk?” - You may also revert to texting one another rather than talking.

Assessments begin with a discussion about the individual’s hearing ability and any impact it may have on their daily life. Then a variety of tests are carried out in a sound proof environment.

Having a loved one come along for support really helps during these assessments. It can also help the audiologist gain a different person’s perspective on how the hearing loss really is affecting you both.

• You may have to watch TV in separate rooms because your loved one has to have the volume up too loud.

• Parties and social gatherings may be avoided because the individual thinks they will not be able to hear what people are saying and don’t want to look silly when they respond to a question with the wrong response. It becomes easier just to stay at home and social life suffers as a result.

• You may now pick restaurants based on their noise level, over where you actually might like to go. If the ceilings are too high or the music is too loud it will make it impossible for your loved one to hear.

From a family carer’s perspective

The people who attend the Age UK Norfolk day centre at Diss have a great time.

There are people of a similar age to chat to about old times; they can have a nice meal, and even get their hair and nails done if they so wish.

But what of those who care for them at home?

Ann Young

Beryl Uwins, who cares for her mother, 93 year old Ann Young, found the Diss Day Centre a “real godsend”...

“I went online because my mother has dementia, and we were finding it difficult. I tried for ages to get her to go to a day centre, but she always said she didn’t want to go “Then my brother came over from America and we decided between us that she needed to be with people of her own age.”

Mrs Uwins said that the decision about the Diss Day Centre was really made for her when she took her mother to Morrisons to do some shopping.. “While I was sorting out and paying for my shopping, she sat down on a seat to wait for me. When I came back she was talking to two other women, and laughing, and I thought ‘that’s it’.

“It’s what she needs. I found the Diss Day Centre online and it’s been brilliant. It gets her out to be with people of a similar age.”

Mrs Uwins said that she and her husband are in their late Sixties, and found it difficult to get out, as they couldn’t leave Mrs Young on her own. “But when she goes to the day centre it gives me a few hours break” she said.

She said she had found the Diss Day Centre “very useful” and had high praise for the staff there. Mrs Young goes on both days when the centre is open.

“I can only speak positively of it. It’s very nice and they do a wonderful job,” she said.

Laura Valentine, who cares for her mother, Shirley, said: “I was being assessed as a carer by the council, and they mentioned the Diss Day Centre, so we got in touch. Mum was a bit reluctant to go at first and I promised her that if she didn’t like it she needn’t go again.

Shirley Valentine as caring for her mum, and said that she intended to contact the council to see if her mum could go to the centre for the two days a week that it opens.

“She always comes back and says what a good time she has had” said Laura. “She enjoys talking to people, and the staff there are just superb – so caring and attentive.”

So how did she feel about Age UK Norfolk? “They have given me an absolute lifeline and I can’t thank them enough.”

South Norfolk Climbing Club, in partnership with Morley village and sports hall, have unveiled a new, state-of-the-art climbing wall.

It is the only public indoor wall in South Norfolk, standing seven metres tall, with 12 rope lines. There are more than 36 routes up, from grade 3 to 7a – along with a 1.6 metre overhang and tufa climb.

Ruth is currently helping mums at a local children’s Ruth Tong, life coach, speaker and writer centre to widen their horizons and grow in confidence through Hillsong’s “Shine” self-esteem course that began in Australia. The seven-week course is proving a success and other doors are opening to take it into the wider community, explains Ruth.

Until then various abuses had kept her locked in rejection and low self-esteem during childhood and adolescence, leading to wrong choices that only deepened the wounds.

She runs the sessions with church member Libby Manning. The women on the course are loved, honoured and nurtured. The 90 minute sessions aim to promote worth, strength and purpose which is helping to empower their lives afresh. The lesson plans provide a framework so they can be tailored to each group explains Ruth.

“When the sacred place of a woman’s heart is violated it is a terrible thing,” says Ruth. “It can mean you look for love and affection in all the wrong places.”

“We include refreshments and there is a small gift and some inspiring quotes to take home each week while role play encourages them to share heart issues.”

It is the power of love that drives Ruth forward in her quest to release God’s best for the women she encourages. She will be hosting the annual women’s conference on 11 June with the help of a team of women at Eternity. The Stowaway cat Su had a feline something wasn’t right…

I

got out and walked to the rear of the car and hoiked up the tail-gate, “Come on - show yourself,” I ordered. Eventually a worried little black face emerged from between my swim-bag and the basket. I had been to inspect a tom-cat with the intention of adopting, but ‘he’ had turned out to be ‘she’ – and was currently hiding in my car.

“Well? What have you got to say for yourself?” I asked her, “before I take you right back where you came from.”

She shuffled backwards in an attempt to hide herself. Poor desperate creature; I have never actually seen a cat cry, but I felt that this was close.

She poked her head out and peered at me.

“I don’t deserve this!” she began defensively. “I’ve tried to keep myself going, I’ve raised my kittens all by myself and, now that I can’t have any more, noone wants me.

“And… if you must know,” she added. “It’s a strain having to pretend I am a tomcat.”

She paused for effect, but I was having none of it.

“You’ll go outside to–” “–Oh, of course!”

“And you’ll keep your claws out of me and my furniture?”

“Constantly retracted,” she said convincingly and unblinking. She had such a sweet innocence that I quickly overcame my reservations.

For safety’s sake, I decided that the rest of the journey should be spent with the cat in the cat basket. She had no chance to argue, and her wails of displeasure were drowned out by me and Bobby Dylan singing very loudly about the Mona Lisa, who also happened to have “the highway blues” as we travelled home.

When we got to my house I released her from her wicker prison and she very kindly ate everything I offered her. She even made herself scarce when I was busy; I had obviously done the right thing in bringing this dear, little cat home.

The tranquil relationship lasted no more than 72 hours.

After just those three short days, she was already lording – or, to be strictly accurate, ladying – it about.

“Those friends of yours said you were my last chance before they got the vet to take care of me. You know what that means don’t you?”

That was then though; just give it a year….

I did. She was right; the vet would certainly “take care” of her.

Well, a year came and went and nothing had yet changed.

Poor thing, she deserved to spend her twilight years in modest comfort. So I thought long and hard about it.

Well, short and hard – she was very persuasive.

“Promise me there will be no more kittens,” I said.

“There won’t – I can’t.”

“And you’ll not be a picky eater?”

“Give me anything; just a few crumbs and I’ll be happy. Honest.”

Smart Money Secrets Be card smart and keep your holiday spending in check

W

ith the summer holiday season fast approaching now’s a good time to check whether your debit or credit card is a cheap option if you plan to use it in foreign climes.

It may be that you need to consider applying for a different card in advance of your trip, and one that isn’t going to cost you an arm and a leg when used outside the UK.

We tend to take our debit cards for granted, especially as they don’t cost anything to use whilst in the UK. Unfortunately it’s not the same when you’re overseas and it’s something that holidaymakers sometimes overlook.

As with credit cards, there is a similar usage fee for cash withdrawals, plus an ATM withdrawal charge typically between £1.50 and £5.00.

Traditional debit and credit cards may offer a secure and convenient way to pay, but the fees and charges vary greatly and are often an expensive way to pay when abroad, so it’s worth thinking of a cheaper alternative before you travel.

However, the card charges that catch most people out are those levied for debit card purchases, which are subject to the usage fee above, plus up to an additional £1.50 per transaction regardless of the amount.

With credit card transactions, most banks add a foreign usage fee to all ATM cash withdrawals and purchases.

In most cases it’s around 2.75 per cent to 2.99 per cent extra.

The worst offenders are Halifax (£1.50 per purchase transaction), Santander (£1.25), Lloyds Bank and TSB (both £1).

But that’s only half the story; on top of the foreign usage fee, most credit cards charge a withdrawal fee of about three per cent extra. So £100 worth of Euros from the hole in the wall can easily set you back a combined charge of around £6.

If you’re looking for a fee free-debit card for using overseas, consider a current account with Norwich & Peterborough Building Society or Metro Bank.

It’s worth spending a couple of minutes to check with your bank what the charges are for your particular plastic before you set off, rather than getting a nasty surprise when you check your account on your return.

Prepaid currency cards from Centtrip, Access Prepaid, FairFX and myTravelCash are amongst the most competitive according to my recent research and the cost savings make it worth carrying a specialist travel card along with your passport whenever you venture overseas.

A final warning, whatever type of plastic you use overseas beware of an increasingly common custom (particularly in Europe) where the foreign retailer or ATM gives you the option to pay in pounds sterling, known as Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC).

Although it may seem like a good idea to know exactly how much you’ll be debited, the downside is that it gives the retailer the opportunity to use an uncompetitive exchange rate which could see you paying way over the odds – the golden rule is never pay in British pounds when abroad.

What a joy to walk in an area with such an abundance of footpaths: not only public rights of way, but permissive paths also. We have not included the permissive paths because they can change, but they are signed at various locations, including the Playing Field.

Start grid ref: TM 281 887. Postcode IP20 0BD. 2 There are various theories about the origins of the name of ‘Misery Corner’.

One can’t help but think its proximity to ‘Hangman’s Hill’ might be relevant!

3 Darrow Wood (right), owned by the National Trust, includes a series of earthworks including a motte and bailey castle. The comparatively small size of this 11th/12th-century castle suggests it was only occupied for a short time. 1 High hedges bordered Pockthorpe Lane which was full of spring flowers including stitchwort, cowslips and a few early purple orchids.

No Swallow or cuckoo yet when we walked in mid April, but Spring in full flow, with flowers and the varied greens of different hedge plants.

Darrow Wood castle evoked a sense of ‘old England’ with the clamour from the rookery within.

4 Denton United Reform Chapel dates back to 1658 and was the first non-conformist establishment in the area. The present United Reform Church was built in 1821 and still has the original box pews with a gallery.

5 The 4-acre ‘Rogerson’s Wood’ was planted as part of the village millennium celebrations. The land was bought from the Rogerson’s Charity by the Woodland Trust.
