One week in May was particularly poignant, as the museum was honoured with visits from two veterans who were based at Thorpe Abbotts during the Second World War, Joe Urice and Dewey Christopher. The visit was marked by a flypast by four KC135 aircraft – a real treat for all involved. The museum continues to be open at weekends and bank holidays until the end of October and Wednesdays until the end of September. On 3 September it will host an event called ‘Remembering the Past’ where people who lived near the base during the war will be telling stories of those far-gone days. LONG STRATTON CHARITY SHOP NOMINATED FOR AWARD

East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) would like to thank their customers for nominating the Long Stratton charity shop to receive an award at the South Norfolk Independent Retailer Awards in June. The shop was nominated by its customers and short listed for the Best Charity Shop award, receiving a commendation at the ceremony. Some of the volunteers attended along with shop manager, Liz Allen and they were all wearing outfits from the shop! Liz, who has been the shop manager for over three years, said: “I am extremely proud of the team and this nomination is testament to the contribution of their personal time, as well as support from our donors and customers.” EACH has 23 charity shops which collectively contribute over £700,000 towards the charity’s specialist palliative care services for children and young people with a life-threatening condition. NORWICH APP CONNECTS THE COMMUNITY Three UEA graduates have developed Grabbit, an app which mixes community values with social media. It all began when one of the Grabbit team members arrived in Norwich, fell ill, and was unable to get out of bed. As a newcomer to the area, he had no friends, no social network of the old-fashioned, face-to-face kind, and no-one to help him get food and medicine while he was ill. Once he’d recovered, he and two other UEA graduates started to question whether technology could help to connect communities and help people to help each other. The Social Delivery was the answer, a new mobile application with an easy-to-remember name: Grabbit. It’s a simple idea, with a simple function. People send shopping requests (currently grocery

and medicines) to be delivered to their door by someone in their community. Grabbit was launched in May and in under two weeks, 150 people had signed up in Norwich. The highest demand came from people with impaired mobility, mental health issues and the isolated and lonely – people for whom daily tasks demands more effort. The team found that while many people sought help with daily activities, they also valued social interactions with people they know they can trust. In other words, Grabbit had the potential to be a delivery service and much more. Now the team have secured funding from UEA and are hoping to work with Age UK Norfolk and Norfolk Carer Support to expand the network. NORMANDY VETERAN IS WISHED HAPPY 93RD BIRTHDAY BY THE DUTCH ARMY

Stradbroke and District Royal British Legion Branch President, Alan King, has just returned home from his third trip to Normandy this year. The latest visit was at the invitation of the Dutch army, who invited Alan along to a training event along with three other military guest speakers. Alan is a Normandy D Day veteran who landed on Juno Beach in France on 6 June 1944. Alan spoke of his experiences, from being

brought up in a small Suffolk village to being called up and training for Operation Neptune – the invasion of the beaches of Normandy. On the last evening of his visit, Alan was invited to lay a wreath at Colville Montgomery at a service of commemoration, led by the town mayor. As a fitting end to his trip, the whole unit wished him a happy 93rd birthday in song. Happy birthday to you, Alan!

John Stork of Norwich and Jo Devo of Thorpe are volunteers for the transport charity Norwich Door to Door, a local organisation who are struggling to cope with the increasing number of passengers requesting support. The pair say becoming a volunteer has greatly enhanced their own well-being. Ms Devo said: “I get an enormous amount of pleasure working as a volunteer. The people I help have become good friends and I get a tremendous sense of well-being from the work I am doing with the group.” Mr Stork said: “I just love my role as a driver. I get so much pleasure from helping people to get out and do what they need to do. I do two days a week which gives me a focus, helps me keep fit and gives me a chance to get out of the house and meet people.” Norwich Door to Door operates ten accessible buses

he lady who lunches has been a bit poorly recently – I am recovering slowly, but the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes is the last thing a restaurant reviewer needs. My puddings! How can I write about squidgy, sweet, chocolatey things now? How can I eat only three chips and leave the rest? Well, for those of you who share my condition, you’ll be glad to know that from now on everything I eat will be suitable for diabetics and those on a weight-loss diet. But I did want to tell you about a lovely pub restaurant I went to recently. It’s 100% vegetarian and can cater for vegan and gluten intolerant individuals too – they even crafted me a bespoke pudding so I didn’t feel left out. Our party consisted of six old friends who met at college and have been in touch ever since so it was lovely to catch up and reminisce about the olden days! The pub is light, bright and warm, and the dining area is spacious. The service is brisk and attentive without being in any way oppressive. Once we all had our drinks – mine being the tiniest bit of prosecco, honestly – we turned to the menu to make our choices. Some of the mains were a little complicated for me, too much fat, too much carbohydrate, that sort of thing, so I decided to have a starter as a main. I chose the vegetable soup with an extra side order of fresh vegetables. The other five round the table chose thyme roasted squash, goats cheese and pecan tart, lentil, vegetable and red wine ragout and an asparagus turnover cooked in puff pastry. Silence then descended which is rare when we six meet up, but the food was fabulous and we all cleared our plates in no time at all. As I said, I had privately arranged for a bespoke pudding, so I turned a blind eye to the pear crumble with cream to the left of me, the sweet potato, cinnamon and pecan pie with custard to the right of me, and the lemon posset opposite. I tucked into my emmental cheese and fresh pear and was more

than satisfied. Four of us had a selection of coffees to follow – thank heaven I have not been forbidden my beloved espresso! I really liked this place; the staff were so friendly, the place clean and welcoming with great big plants on all the windowsills, and for once I got a decent serving of properly cooked fresh vegetables. The disabled access is ‘doable’ although there are a couple of steps into the building but the staff are more than happy to help. The bill for all six of us came to just over the £100 mark, so that’s about £17 each; jolly good value for money.

Prep: 10 min + 20 min cooking

INGREDIENTS: 400g cooking apples, peeled, cored and cut into chunks 1 tsp ground cinnamon Pinch of ground cloves Grated zest and juice of ½ lemon 2 to 3 tsp granulated sweetener 50g plain flour 50g rolled oats Pinch of ground cinnamon 30g low-fat spread 1 tbsp demerara sugar

01. Pre-heat the oven to 200°C, gas mark six. 02. Put the cooking apples, ground spices, lemon zest and juice in a saucepan and cook gently over a low heat for 10 mins until the apples are tender. he Rotary Club of Diss & District are bringing another free music event to the town on Saturday 12 August. The park in Diss will come alive with live music from 5.45pm with the pavilion as the stage and the park as the auditorium.

Thirty years since her journey began, Shirley Valentine is set to visit Norwich Theatre Royal on a major UK tour and Jodie Prenger cannot wait to take on the role. Shirley Valentine was the ultimate bored housewife. Stuck in a rut with the highlight of her life being food preparation for her distant husband, excitement was sorely lacking. So when her friend wins a fortnight’s holiday in Greece, she decides to go with her and that journey changes her life for ever. The inspirational, bittersweet and at times hilarious story has been a West End hit and a famous film. With Willy Russell’s beautifully crafted production celebrating its 30th birthday in 2017, what better way to mark

the anniversary than a major UK tour? It will reach Norwich Theatre Royal on September 5-9 and features top theatre, TV and radio star Jodie Prenger as the heroine in the one-woman show. Having this opportunity is a dream come true for Jodie. She said: “I can just remember watching the film and thinking ‘oh, that’s wonderful.’ It has that fantastic Northern humour and Shirley just says what us girls would say.” As preparation, she has also met up with Willy Russell and Glen Walford, who directed the original production 30 years ago and is returning to the play for the birthday tour. Even the ever-bubbly Jodie realised she was in the presence of theatrical royalty. She laughed: “I already knew Willy’s work through Blood Brothers and Educating Rita so I didn’t know what to do.

I thought I needed to curtsey!” Jodie credits her love of performing to her early life in Blackpool, the place where many say show-business is in the water. “I can remember all these huge summer seasons with big stars like Russ Abbot and Danny La Rue. I remember my nan taking me to these shows and I was just amazed. I think it definitely contributed to me wanting to step on the stage.” So, are there any theatre shows she still wants to do? “Give me 20 years and I would love to do Gypsy, or just any show that will have me really,” she joked. So it does sound that 30 years on, Shirley Valentine is in very safe hands.

MANGO & NECTARINE MERINGUE ROULADE At the height of summer, no-one in the Pennoyer volunteer ‘BakeForce’ wants to spend hours slaving over a hot stove. This meringue roulade can be in the oven in 10 minutes. Once cool it’s just a case of compiling before serving. The blend of perfumed mango with sweet pavlova-like meringue, spiked with a tiny tartness of nectarine is perfect, but it’s up to you: any ripe summer fruits will be luscious. Serves 10

the baking tin and smooth gently with a palette knife. Bake in the oven for 30 minutes until lightly golden. Remove from the oven and cover the tin with a damp tea towel until cool. 04. Meanwhile, whip the double cream until quite stiff then add the crème fraiche to lighten the mix. Lightly stir in the mango puree. Sweeten with icing sugar to taste, remembering you have sweet meringue too. 05. When ready to serve, dust a large sheet of greaseproof paper with icing sugar. Turn out the roulade – bits of the crust will flake off, but don’t worry, that all adds to the gorgeousness of the cake. 06. Spread the mango cream mix across the meringue then scatter with the cubes of fruit. Take the long edge of the greaseproof paper and roll – actually, it’s more of a fold – the roulade, then lift and gently turn out onto a serving plate or board. 07. It is at its best within a couple of hours, whilst it still holds its shape – however, we find it doesn’t usually hang around for long!

FILLING INGREDIENTS 300ml double cream 60ml half-fat crème fraiche 5 tablespoons mango puree (see tip) Icing sugar to taste 1 large ripe mango, half sliced, half roughly cubed 2 ripe nectarines, one sliced, one cubed

METHOD 01. Preheat the oven to 140ºC. Line a 22cm x 33cm baking tin with baking parchment. 02. Whisk the egg whites with an electric mixer until stiff peaks form. Add the caster sugar a tablespoonful at a time, whisking in each spoonful. When all the sugar is added, whisk for another minute. 03. Add the cornflour, vinegar and a good dash of vanilla extract, and beat these in. Spoon into

BIRDS PREPARE TO FLY SOUTH As autumn approaches, birds like swifts, swallows and house martins prepare for migration. Swifts are first to head south for warmer weather in Africa, leaving by mid-August. Swallows and house martins stick around a little longer and you will see them gathering in large flocks before embarking on their long

migration a few weeks later. With the migrating birds gone, our resident all-year-rounders like wrens become quieter and return to warm roosts at night. To see them in your garden, keep your bird bath topped up with fresh water and raise it well off the ground so visiting birds have a clear view of any danger.

ON THE VEGETABLE PATCH By late summer, your vegetable patch will be in full swing – keep looking after your plants to maximise their crop. Potatoes can be harvested for immediate use and replaced with late season varieties to give you a second crop in October. If the weather is hot and humid, you can protect against potato blight with a fungicide spray. Vegetables like courgettes, cucumbers and beans should be picked regularly to make space for further crops. You’ll also find that courgettes are much tastier when picked early. When runner beans reach the top of their supports, pinch them out to prevent further growth upwards. Likewise, pinch out any side-shoots on tomatoes and tie the leading shoots to canes for support. Keep watering plants which are in flower or fruiting, and add a fertiliser which is high in potash every week.

WHEN TO WATER? Watering an important – and timeconsuming – job in the summer months, but you may find that you can save water and keep your plants healthy. Lots of gardeners water more often than they need to, which encourages plants to grow shallow roots. If you water thoroughly, but less often, plants will start to reach deeper into the soil for moisture. The RHS recommends thorough watering to a depth of 30cm every 10-14 days. It’s also important to water in the right way, at the right time. Spraying water onto foliage does no good to the roots and wet leaves may cause disease. Instead, direct water to the soil at the base of the plant and never water in the middle of a hot day – early mornings and evenings are the best times to water in order to avoid loss from evaporation. On the vegetable patch, lettuces should be watered more often, along with seedlings and new plants. Legumes, sweetcorn and tomatoes will benefit from more water than root crops, especially when flowering and fruiting. But too much can mean more leaves than fruit, so be careful!

ummer is here, and there’s nothing quite like a little alfresco time… sitting back watching the world go by, a nice cool drink at your side, maybe a can of beer, perhaps sharing a bottle of wine, or simply enjoying a glass of pure fresh water nature’s finest tonic and an essential requirement for almost all living things. As gardeners we rely on water to keep our plants stress-free and healthy, but what can we do to reduce our dependence on this most precious resource and yet still maintain a beautiful outlook and a productive vegetable plot? Soil improvement should be considered an essential part of the preparation of a new bed or border as this may be your only chance to add structure to the soil, which will help retain moisture and nutrients at root level, and make heavy soil easier to work. Use well-rotted farmyard manure (available from us in clean sealed bags) and any spare compost you may have. If your garden is already established, the next best option is to lay a surface mulch of the same material. Do this after a period of rain to help lock in moisture, the mulch will gradually be drawn down

by worms, releasing goodness over time. For a more attractive finish you can use a mulch of chipped bark or decorative stones (over a weed-suppressing membrane), but apply a general purpose fertiliser such as pelleted poultry manure before spreading the topping. Many plants are drought-tolerant having evolved to withstand their native environments, so take advantage of this when making new selections, try eryngium, echinops, rosemary, hardy English lavender, hebe and potentilla to name just a few. Plants prefer natural rainfall as it contains a proportion of easily-absorbed nutrients (which is why everything looks so good after a steady downpour), so look around for any suitable sites where a water butt from our range of sizes may be installed. Concentrate on watering newer plantings and pots, as established plants should be able to fend for themselves for a period of time.

or the third year running, Wymondham Town Centre is set to brighten up shop fronts with impressive floral displays. Wymondham in Bloom is an independent floral competition with a small local committee consisting of Martin Ford, Garry and Brenda Growcott and Ivan Flatt.

The aim is to add to the atmosphere and visual appearance of Wymondham Town Centre with hanging baskets, planters, window boxes and more, all bursting with flowers. The scheme has secured funding from South Norfolk District Council, allowing it to team up with Wymondham Garden Centre and offer town centre shops a massive 50% off floral displays. Businesses are also free to source their plants and hardware independently or even grow their own! Martin Ford said: “Over the past two years, we’ve seen all sorts of displays including flowers bursting out of shoes, wellington boots, furniture, suitcases and even bubble gum machines. All in all, this has really helped to add to the welcoming summer feel of the town and make the town centre a great

destination for locals, visitors and holiday makers alike!” Local businesses will be invited to vote on their favourite display by handing in their voting slip at Mad Hatters Tea Shop or Wymondham Garden Centre. THE TASBURGH ENIGMA unveiled?

ucked away in the village of Tasburgh is an enigma – a scheduled earthworks heritage site with no specific dating. Roughly oval in shape, the earthworks lie close to the medieval church of All Saints and in places rise to a height of 3m. Suggestions as to their age range from Iron Age to Viking.

Research is now underway to try and find some answers. Archeological test pits within the village have revealed some surprising finds including stone age flint scrapers, as sharp as the day they were made, Georgian coins, Saxon and medieval pottery, buttons, trade tokens and a .50 calibre WW2 bullet. This was a truly village project as the diggers included school children, scouts, village volunteers and members of the Caistor Roman Project. In charge of the archaeological excavations was Giles Emory of Norvic Archaeology.

initial research being undertaken by the Tasburgh Research Group into the village history at the Norfolk Archive Centre. The archaeological research forms part of a wider Imagined Land/Norfolk Archaeological Trust heritage lottery funded project. The results of the research will form the catalyst for a series of creative workshops in Tasburgh led by community artists involving music, art, writing and drama over the summer period. “We are really delighted to be helping Tasburgh to discover its past. The people of the village have shown great interest and enthusiasm and we look forward to working with them in going some way to unlocking mysteries surrounding the originss of this significant site and of the village itselff,”” says Simon Floyd of Imagined Land.

Geophysical surveys of the heritage site have revealed the existence of previously unknown Saxon houses and pottery. A travelling exhibition is being created which will be on display at Tasburgh Village Hall and All Saints Church in mid July before moving to the Long Stratton Library. This exhibition will highlight the results of the archaeological study as well as

GARDEN BIRDWATCH

ost people have heard of the Big Garden Birdwatch which takes place during the last weekend of January every year. Many of you will have taken part; it’s something you can do on your own or with other people, like children or grandchildren.

There is also another Garden Birdwatch that happens continuously throughout the year. It’s organized by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), which is based in Thetford. Statistics collected from ordinary citizens throughout the British Isles provide a wealth of information over time and enable research scientists to understand the size of different bird populations and how they change with the years. This information is compared with other factors like weather conditions and changing land use and informs what conditions can cause a decline in birds so that preventative action can be taken. Birds are at the top of the food chain and a dearth of them can indicate serious failure further down the chain. After being persuaded to grub up hedges and copses in the sixties to increase the size of their fields for mechanized agriculture, some farmers are now being encouraged to replant them as habitat for nature, leaving wider headlands around arable fields. These provide food and shelter,

not just for birds, but also for small mammals and invertebrates. They also provide corridors along which birds and animals can move, another important factor in a healthy wildlife population. As a result, some species are recovering. The BTO needs more garden birdwatchers to boost its research. People are asked to record the birds they see in their gardens each week in a specific way. It is not onerous, and can be done by just looking through your window each day!

SCULPTURE TRAIL

to grace the Waveney Valley this summer A trail of sculptures and site-specific artwork will lead visitors to an idyllic site in the Waveney Valley this summer. Trail and a portable hearing loop for workshops. There is also a British Sign Language interpreted Curator’s Walk and some of the trail is wheelchair accessible.” The Ravenous Café, on site, will be open throughout the trail and will host the exhibition of paintings, prints, textiles and 3-D work by the Harleston & Waveney Art Trail Collective. There are also a number of other businesses at the Raveningham Centre including M D Cannell Antiques, Norfolk Rugs, Helen Howes Textile Artist and Hobbies.

he fourth Waveney Valley Sculpture Trail will host the work of more than 50 artists on a three-acre site of hidden paths, romantic groves and secretive corners in a littleknown site on the edge of the Waveney Valley. Organised by Waveney & Blyth Arts the event builds on the success of last year’s trail and will take place at the Raveningham Centre near Beccles. Many established artists such as Vanessa Pooley, Liz McGowan, Gordon Senior, Patrick Elder, Simon Griffiths and Meg Amsden will be joined by up-and-coming artists taking part for the first time. Curator Sarah Cannell, who has encouraged artists to create work in response to the site, said: “I am thrilled to be curating the sculpture trail again. The threeacre site is an exciting challenge

for both myself and the artists. It has a variety of different settings from open meadow to magical secret garden and is all set in the grounds of a beautiful Tudor farmhouse.” A programme of workshops, guided walks and events will accompany the event, including a family day and a guided tour of the site to give people an insight into how the sculpture trail was created.

The trail is open every day from Friday 18 August until Sunday 17 September from 10am until 5pm. Admission is £5 for adults, £4 for members of Waveney and Blyth Arts, under 18s go free. Well behaved dogs are allowed on a lead.

The group has put a number of assistance schemes in place to ensure as many people as possible can enjoy the trail. Nicky Stainton from Waveney & Blyth Arts said: “We are very keen to promote greater access and will have a pre-recorded audio guide to the Sculpture

WYMONDHAM Heritage Museum The writing is on the wall at Wymondham Heritage Museum. A timeline is the latest addition in the ongoing development of visitor attractions at the museum which is based in The Bridewell on Norwich Road.

he timeline measures 1.6 x 0.9 metres and is split into two sides. On the left it charts the history of the town and The Bridewell from the 14th century through to the opening of the museum in 1996. Milestones include the birth of the town’s most famous citizen, Robert Kett, in 1492 and the rebellion he lead in 1549. The Great Fire of Wymondham in 1615 and reformer John Howard’s visit to The Bridewell in 1779 also play their part on the timeline.

On the right hand side, the timeline records significant events in history including the accession of monarchs throughout the ages beginning with Edward II who came to the throne in 1307. Other historical highlights include Christopher Columbus discovering America in 1492, the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 and the Pilgrim Fathers landing in America in 1620. Museum volunteer, Amanda Oelrichs, carried out the initial research, producing the significant dates for Wymondham and The Bridewell. The task was then taken on by another volunteer, the museum’s IT manager, Trevor Woods. He did further research, adding dates of other historical events on the right hand side to provide context to what was happening in the town. On the Wymondham side the last public hanging in the town took place in 1713 while on the other side, we see the last hanging in the country was 1964. Mr Woods also sourced photographs and designed the timeline. He says: “I used a spreadsheet to put the basic dates in. But I couldn’t scale up and down in blocks of years so I got some software which allows you to scale it in proportion.” The result is a colourful and informative panel which completes the refurbishment of the museum’s reception area.

LOCAL HISTORIAN

MEMORIES OF WORTHAM Local historian, Dennis Cross from Diss, shares with us his fascinating collection of old postcards, focusing on a different village in every issue. This issue, we take a walk down memory lane in Wortham

The Ling roller mills were converted from a windmill at the turn of the century. The miller in 1909 was Ernest Youngman. Some of the buildings remain, including the millerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s house, which is now a private residence.

Wortham Public Elementary School was built and opened in 1870. Over the main arch entrance, carved into the brickwork, were the words faith, hope and charity.

Around 1911, the landlord of The Magpie public house on Magpie Green was Mr Arthur Garnham. Wortham had four other public houses over the years; The Cherry Tree on Mellis Road, The Queenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Head on the Bury St Edmunds road, The Tumbledown Dick on Wortham Ling and The Dolphin (now called the Manor House) on Long Green.

A group of villagers celebrate the end of the First World War and the safe return of soldiers outside Wortham Queen’s Head in 1918. The Primitive Methodist Chapel was built in 1898 on Long Green. After closing in the early 1980s, it was converted to a private house. This photo was taken in 1911 when the population of Wortham was 830.

Wortham was a widely scattered village and parish consisting of 5 hamlets; Long Green, The Ling, Magpie Green, The Marsh and The Brook, with approximately 270 acres of common land. This picture, taken in 1911, shows the road to Bury St Edmunds which has now been altered to stand where the trees once stood. The Norfolk Postcard Club meets regularly in Trowse in Norwich and new members are very welcome. The next meetings are on 9 August & 13 September Dennis is also the author of several local history books that can be purchased by contacting him direct.

History

A SIGN OF THE TIMES Thwaite In the second of her new series of articles, Sarah Doig takes a closer look at the Thwaite village sign and what it tells us about the community’s history.

ost Suffolk people might be forgiven for thinking that all there is to Thwaite is a row of old houses and a pub (for many years the Buck’s Head although recently reopened as a vegetarian restaurant called The Walnut Tree) lying along the busy A140. However, lying to the west of the main road is the village centre where the village sign sits alongside the churchyard. The date AD 890 on the sign refers to the approximate date of the original settlement here by the Vikings. It was these founders who gave the village its name which in old Norse means a forest clearing or meadow or, more usually, a fenced field. It is the church, dedicated to St George, which takes centre stage on the sign. For many centuries, it had played a key part in the lives of the parishioners until it was declared redundant in 2008, having fallen into some disrepair. Happily, residents stepped in to take on the building and, after extensive renovation, it was reopened as St George’s Hall which is now used for community events. The two flashes of colour on the wrought iron sign are provided by the coat of arms of two of the key landowners in Thwaite in times gone by. The Reve family’s seat was Thwaite Hall (now sadly demolished) and in the early 1700s, Anne, the daughter of Sir Robert Reve, married John Sheppard thus uniting the two families.

The sun and the clouds with rain are not there simply to make the sign look more attractive; they have an important significance. They represent the famous poet and weather prophet, Orlando Whistlecraft, who lived in the village for almost all his life. Amongst other things, he earned a living as the village schoolmaster and shopkeeper. Whistlecraft was a largely self-taught scientist who, from an early age, wrote letters to the local newspapers on all aspects of nature and science. For sixty-five years – from 1827 through to 1892 – he kept a weather diary, recording thermometer and barometer readings. It is the wonderful little details on the Thwaite village sign that make it one of the best in the region. A duck and ducklings waddle along underneath the church,

surrounded by ears of wheat and flowers. Another nod towards Thwaite’s rural setting is the tractor which sits by the church. Between the two coats of arms you can see a pulpit which is a depiction of the one in the church, said to date from the fifteenth century. And If you look closely, you will even see a broken fence which harks back to the origins of the village’s name.

at the undertakers

n the 1970s I was putting an extension on my house and needed some oak boards. I saw an advert in the local paper saying that John Jennings, the auctioneer of Apthorpes of Diss, was holding a sale of the effects of Coppins (the undertakers) on their premises at Stradbroke. I duly attended and found the place swarming with all sorts of characters who had donned their best suits for the occasion as was their tradition. Now these suits were not ordinary suits but horseman’s clobber, having raised seams everywhere, fall front trousers with no fly, jacket and waistcoat high to the neck and horseshoe buttons set in threes. Having been bespoke made, mostly by the legendary local tailor Curtis and Rowe of Debenham, many had been adapted and decorated at the request of their clients. I can only describe the banter, country wit and idiom of the people who formed the auction company that day as quite beautiful. On the way home I composed this little appreciation of my day:

It is a cold winter’s day and snow lays on the ground Today there is an auction sale, at Stradbroke I’ll be bound They’ve been going for years and years, generations I declare But it’s Coppins sale this day, the undertakers there The wind does blow, the frost does freeze on this day in mid-winter As many souls for bargain sake huddle round the auctioneer The auctioneer a frozen through and with a dewdrop on his nose Like a stalagmite from morn to night it just grows and grows and grows Its sixpence here and a shilling there for this undertakers gear Until to the joiners shop they go to sell coffin boards in there As all do squash in this small space beneath the auctioneer An old boy, some strong tobacco smokes and it drifts into the air Oh how the auctioneer does shout, inhaling fit to burst Until the smoke gets in his lungs, well you can guess the worst He coughed he choked, he cannot stop as on these coffin boards he stood And then a wag from out the crowd said “Sir, do you think you should While you’re a selling them coffin boards, in view of your state of health Keep one lot back because it looks as though you may need it for yourself.” 69

CARING FOR deaf and blind CATS

Rita Thompson from Breckland Cats Protection shares her advice for looking after deaf or blind cats.

ats can lose their sight very gradually, so owners don’t always realise how bad their eyesight has become. Blind cats usually adapt very well to the loss of sight, compensating by using their other senses and their whiskers to understand the world around them. Common causes of blindness include the herpes virus or an eye injury. If caught early enough the blindness can sometimes be reversed. If blindness is caused by disease or injury, one or both eyes may be removed. In this case the cat may become disorientated and be unwilling to leave his sleeping area, or be unable to find his litter tray. To help a blind cat, keep him inside for his own safety and encourage him to walk around indoors on his own. Cats have scent glands on their paws that leave a trail to follow. Talk to him as you approach to avoid startling him. Avoid moving furniture, food and litter trays and don’t leave obstacles where your cat could walk into them. Encourage him to play with jingly toys so that he can exercise to avoid becoming overweight.

Some cats are born deaf, but many cats lose their hearing gradually as they age. Sudden loss of hearing is normally a result of illness or injury and may be temporary or permanent. Deaf cats compensate for their lack of hearing by using their other senses

more, so much that it may be hard to tell whether or not they are deaf. You can tell if your cat is deaf if he meows more often and more loudly or goes completely mute. Other symptoms may be failure to respond when spoken to or being easily startled. Signs of dizziness or disorientation and no longer being afraid of the vacuum cleaner are also signs of deafness, as is shaking the head or clawing at the ear, or a discharge or unpleasant odour from the ear. As deaf cats are unable to hear danger, such as cars or other animals, it is best to keep them indoors for their own safety. Deaf cats can learn to recognise hand signals or flashing a torch if they can’t hear you calling them. Make sure the signal you choose to call your cat is distinct and consistent so he doesn’t get confused. 5 Filby Broad is one of the ‘Trinity Broads’. These in fact consist of six broads: Ormesby Great, Rollesby, Lily, Ormesby Little, Filby and Little. These are some of the deepest and cleanest broads in ‘Broadland’. Their isolated position away from the general river system has resulted in less pollution and over-fertilization. This has promoted good water quality along with reduced eutrophication and silting by comparison with many other broads.

Walked in Midsummer sunshine, the abundance of butterflies along Muck Fleet was breathtaking. The wider area was once an island known as Flegg. Many of the village names end in ‘by’, which infers a Danish Viking origin. We saw no Vikings, but some of the locals do look a little fearsome! CLIMBING HIGH FOR Maisie AND TEENAGE CANCER TRUST Human nature is a wonderful thing; in the face of adversity people often launch into positive actions. Maisie Colquhoun certainly did.

Maisie received chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant at the Teenage Cancer Trust’s (TCT) C9 ward at Addenbrooke’s. She was told of the likely outcome but chose to put up a courageous and inspiring fight. The Colquhoun family felt so strongly that the wonderful support and expert treatment she received was something that every young person should have access to and so decided to raise funds for the C9 ward at Addenbrooke’s. Dr Helen Hatcher, consultant oncologist at Cambridge University Hospitals, said: “Evidence shows that a dedicated unit staffed by specialist consultants and nurses results in better surv rvival v rates and faster recovery ry.” y

Ice Cream & Sun Cream is the first non-music book that the rock photographer has produced and was shot entirely on location in Norfolk including Sheringham, Cromer, Weybourne, Blakeney, Mundesley, Holt, Norwich, and Hunstanton, as well as the North Norfolk Railway’s Poppy Line. The culmination of two year’s work, the 166 page book features over 200 images as seen through the eyes of an eight year old boy. entral Norfolk Walking for Health offers a range of free health walks in The Broads, Norwich City and parts of South Norfolk with walks graded to suit most ability and fitness levels. Walks vary from 30-90 minutes long so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s possible to choose the one which suits you best. The programme includes walks in Poringland, Brooke, Framingham Pigot and Bergh Apton.

Try a short, slower-paced walk or a more challenging one and see how your fitness improves over time. : What is an enlarged prostate and how does it affect men?

: The prostate is a small gland found in men. It sits just under the bladder and with age, the prostate has a tendency to enlarge. This condition is commonly referred to simply as an enlarged prostate. The medical term is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BHP). The use of the word benign is significant – it indicates that the condition is not lifethreatening, in contrast to prostate cancer, the prostate problem we hear about more frequently. Instead she lives life to the full, sharing her creative skills with others and investing in her health. “I have a God-given duty to look after myself so I have lost weight and keep active with swimming and walking.” During 2011 she was in constant pain and plagued with visual disturbances for months that even resulted in the temporary loss of her eyesight one afternoon which, she explains, could have resulted in a stroke.

ulbarton grandmother, Sue Oxbury, loves to spend time with her family and enjoys the simple pleasures of life. But the active, young-at-heart pensioner believes that the everyday joys she once took for granted could have easily been snatched away when her life was hanging by a thread.

Despite the persistent difficulties and terrible headaches, Sue was determined to maintain a normal life. From the onset, the Swardeston church member found courage and hope through her resilient Christian faith that had grown through various life challenges. Eventually she underwent complex surgery. “When I was wheeled down to the operating theatre for the anaesthetic I felt calm as I drifted off to sleep, knowing God’s hand was holding me tight.

Today Sue is full of gratitude, believing that miraculous intervention has given her a second taste of life after the main artery in her neck was blocked, requiring a high-risk operation in a bid to save her life.

“God is not just about history and what has happened in the Bible – he lives among us now, walking beside us through the good and bad times offering us hope and strength for whatever life brings.”

“I was taken from the brink of death to life during eight hours of dangerous surgery when I could have died within eight seconds if my artery was severed,” recalls Sue. “But the skill of the surgeon, along with the hand of God, truly saved me that day and restored me to wholeness to see my daughter marry

Sue is a keen crafter and needlewoman whose labour of love three years ago was her daughter’s satin and lace beaded wedding dress. She also makes church banners and hand-crafted gifts to sell at church events while passing on techniques to others and helping those around her.

DON’T FORGET to brush your teeth!

he Oral Health Foundation have looked at just how long we spend brushing our teeth during our lives with some amazing findings.

With the UK’s average life expectancy currently standing at 81.5 years, if a person brushes their teeth for two minutes twice a day over the course of their life it would equate to the equivalent of 82 days. That equates to more than 1322 football matches, 1487 rugby matches, or 16 five-day cricket test matches! You could also watch all of the current 60 episodes of Game of Thrones a whopping 33 times each, or the whole run of 236 episodes of Friends 23 times. In reality we know that a lot of people do not always spend two minutes twice a day, every day brushing their teeth. But you should be! The shocking statistic is that more than 40,000 children have had teeth removed under general anaesthetic in hospitals within the last year alone due to tooth decay.

• The enamel on the top surface on your tooth is the hardest part of the entire body.

• In the first adult dental health survey in 1968 over one third of the population (37%) had no natural teeth – it is now about 6% of adults.

• If we only had five minutes to get ready in the

e know that hat even the mildest dehydration can an affect our mood and rob us of the ability to think clearly. The worst part is that the urgent feelings of thirst don’t kick in until we’re already dehydrated and it has started to affect us. It takes even more time to show in the skin but its effects are long-lasting. After the summer months dehydration is a common problem in the skin clinic. olo Housing are a charity based in Diss, Norfolk. Their aim, since 1985 has been to help single people find suitable and affordable accommodation. One of the services offered by Solo Housing is the ‘Lodgings scheme’. This is currently operated in the South Norfolk, Waveney and Suffolk Coastal areas. Individuals are referred to Solo Housing either by the local authority, self-referral or through other agencies and ‘word of mouth’. Many hundreds of single people have been helped through the scheme over the years. This scheme is totally reliant upon a steady supply of suitable landlords/landladies who are able to offer a room in their homes, where Solo Housing can help place a client who is seeking somewhere to live. All single people who come to Solo Housing for assistance are interviewed to enquire into their own particular circumstances, to establish how they can best be helped. Solo also visit potential landlords who wish to be included in the scheme to establish what kind of accommodation they have to offer, and to ascertain the criteria they are looking for in a lodger.

he newspapers are sometimes quick to criticise the banks about poor value products and low interest rates. Don’t get me wrong – some of this is justified, but some of the accounts on the market are pretty good and don’t deserve to be tarred with the same negative brush. In recent years the big high street names have been given a rough ride, particularly concerning ‘packaged current accounts’ – i.e. accounts where you get a host of extra benefits in return for a monthly fee. Now whilst some of these accounts may not be overly competitive, there is one stand out product that I think it is worth making you aware of.

In my opinion the best packaged account by a country mile is the Flex Plus account from Nationwide Building Society in terms of what you get in return for your monthly subscription. It will cost you £10 per month for the Flex Plus account, but before I give you the lowdown on the associated benefits it comes with, your ears may soon prick up when I tell you it pays you 3% interest on credit balances up to £2,500 – that’s an excellent rate in today’s ultra-low savings rate environment. If you maintained £2,500 or more in your account for a full month you’d earn £6.25 in interest, so in effect you’d end up paying a net £3.75 each month for the account. These accounts only represent good value if you make use of the extras on offer, so let me give you a quick run-down of what you get with Nationwide’s Flex Plus to see if you think it could work for you. 1. The account comes with worldwide multi trip family travel insurance which even includes cover for winter sports and golf equipment. 2. The second key benefit is UK and European vehicle breakdown and recovery assistance – and where the account is in joint names then up to 2 vehicles can be covered. 3. Another handy extra is mobile phone insurance which covers the phones of the whole family if they are lost, stolen or damaged. You can only claim a maximum of twice in any one year, but it’s

still great value especially when you realise that Vodafone insurance for a single iPhone will set you back £12 per month. 4. Flex Plus also comes with 12 months extended warranty on household electrical goods where the cover begins immediately upon expiry of the standard manufacturer’s warranty. I know you’re thinking this sounds like a bit of a sales pitch but I can assure you I have nothing to gain by recommending this product – it’s just that I think it offers tremendous value and is worth closer inspection. So whilst many bank accounts may be criticised as being a bit drab and run of the mill, Flex Plus proves there is still the odd gem out there waiting to to be unearthed– but only if consumers know they exist.
