GreeN caN alsO be glam! recognition FOr lOcal lady Joyce Cooper is a member of the stradbroke and District branch of the Royal British Legion, who has been carrying the Branch standard for the last four years. she takes seriously the fact that a Branch standard represents lives lost at war within the local area and says she feels quite humbled to carry it – but hates the outdated uniform, especially the beret!

The role is just one of Joyce’s many duties in the community, including volunteering as a Royal British Legion Welfare Case Worker in Norfolk and suffolk, which involves visiting referred veterans, their dependents, widows or widowers of all ages and using her social Work degree to help them. Joyce urges other recentlyretired people to utilise their life skills by becoming a volunteer, like she has done.
The sinfield Nature Conservation Trust, in its quest to raise sustainable funding to carry on protecting, preserving and maintaining a pristine wildlife environment in an unspoiled area of suffolk countryside, has constructed a really rather magical glamping site in the midst of the meadows. The income received from guests who holiday at secret Meadows, in turn, helps to fund the ongoing work of the trust. bOwled Over by world-record breakers Lynne ainge set herself and teammates at Diss and District Bowls Club an impressive task: to break the Guinness World Record for the longest game of bowls, all in support of Norfolk’s cancer charity, Big C. Until recently, the record for the longest indoor bowls marathon was 40 hours and held in australia. In February, the team took on the challenge to bring the record to Norfolk and play for 50 hours non-stop at Potters Leisure Resort in Great Yarmouth, the home of the World Bowls Championships, and they were successful! “I’ve had a few traumatic years” explained Lynne. “Not only did I have breast cancer myself, I lost my husband and soul mate, Pete, as well as my dad, Bert. pring has finally arrived and, after what seemed like a long winter, it’s great to turn our attention to the garden and an outside lifestyle.
There is a current trend in creating another room space in your garden and having the flexibility to accessorise and re-order your flower beds – often referred to as the “movable garden”. It really does not matter if you have a large acreage, a small courtyard, a period look or a modern look; the basic principal remains. e careful if you arrange to meet-and-eat at Jarrold; there is not one but four eateries. In the basement is the self-service Café Metro, in the wonderful book department is Chapters – where you can revive yourself and read awhile – and the top floor has The Pantry, which is also self-service. But if you wish to dine elegantly, comfortably and be waited upon, Benji’s is the place; tucked away on the first floor in a corner of ladies’ fashion. On the menu is a large variety of meal types. We were tempted by one of the sharing platters but decided against because I like to report on two different meals – anyway the ladies at the next table were busy demolishing the fish sharing platter and it looked fabulous (but more on that later*). I was in the mood for roast meat, and was pleased to see “Rump of Lamb, twice cooked, with pesto mash and sweet and sour aubergine”. My companion chose the special all-in lunch, which comprises two courses chosen from a designated list, with a glass of wine. This was particularly attractive as the three elements bought separately would have far

exceeded the“mealdeal”price of £12.50. My lamb was thickly cut, prettily pink in the middle and generous in proportion. The pesto mash was creamy and complemented the meat very well. The crisped-up aubergine peelings lay atop the meat, whilst the rest of it was under the mash providing a welcome, sharp, sweet and sour contrast. My friend’s coq au vin came in its own mini casserole
and was decanted onto her plate; the vessel being whipped away smartly by our attentive waitress. Once released, it revealed itself to be a very generous portion. It was accompanied by cabbage – the telling vegetable – which was cooked to perfection, and also creamy mash. My friend’s glass of white wine was indistinguishable from my full-price one, and both were chilled and mellow. My friend’s pudding was a base of a creamy, rich, salted caramel and peanut mousse, topped with icecream and pinioned by a shard of
clear, boiled sugar, encapsulating tiny dark vanilla seeds. It was enchanting to look at and wonderful to taste. I have difficulty veering away from ice cream, but as the alternatives were a chocolate orange brownie (not fond of oranges), the concoction that my friend was having, or a sharing-platter pudding – I was easily redirected to the“Ice Cream affogato”. To save you searching out your dictionary, I can report that this is a coffee-based beverage, created from a scoop of vanilla ice cream and “drowned”with either hot or cold strong espresso coffee. Fortunately, the elements were served separately and very elegantly with slices of biscotti biscuit to dip. Then my friend had an americano to finish. *As to the fish sharing-platter, my friend returned to the
restaurant the very next day and shared one with her husband. Plenty for two; smoked salmon, prawns, mackerel paté – you name it. Delicious!

Now in its 26th year, National Pet Month aims to bring pet fans from across the UK together for fun and educational events around the country. This year the theme is “Pets and the Elderly: Enjoying Later Years Together”, which recognises the amazing impact pets can have on the lives of older people as well as highlighting the need for forever homes for older rescue pets. Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is launching its first Great British Dog Walk in 2015 and your closest event is taking place at the National Trust’s Ickworth Park, near Bury st Edmunds, on sunday 10 May. Everyone is welcome and you don’t have to have a dog to take part. There are two walk routes to choose from – 3k and 7k – where you will also have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Ickworth Park. In addition to the walk, there will be lots of other activities to enjoy, including craft and fundraising stalls as well as games for the family. The fabulous Hearing Dogs display team will also be demonstrating during the day – and there may even be a puppy or two to meet!

striped pyjamas
Based on the best-selling novel by John Boyne, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a heart-wrenching tale of an unlikely friendship between two innocent boys.
t
he story is seen through the eyes of Bruno, the eight-year-old son of a concentration camp commandant during World War II, whose forbidden friendship with a Jewish boy on the other side of the camp fence leads to a startling and devastating conclusion. This fable of a friendship, which challenges extreme prejudice, is brought to Norwich Theatre Royal from May 5 to 9 by The Children’s Touring Partnership which previously produced Swallows and Amazons and Goodnight Mister Tom – both of which delighted Theatre Royal audiences. The book, first published in 2006 and made into a Miramax film in 2008, has been adapted for the stage by theatre and film director angus Jackson. It is directed by Joe Murphy, who most recently worked on Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies for the Royal shakespeare Company.
author John Boyne is thrilled to see the play coming to Norwich, a city he loves. The Dublin-based writer studied Creative Writing at the UEa, where he was awarded the Curtis Brown prize in 1995, and he has recently been back in the city teaching on the very same course. He said: “I love Norwich – I was a student here myself – and have been back and forth over the years with various festivals and then was asked to teach.”
Having seen his novel adapted for the cinema, he is now keen to see the reactions from theatre audiences to what is a difficult and traumatic subject to dramatise. “The script is a fairly faithful adaptation of the novel. It will be very interesting to see it on stage and I think it will be quite moving,” he said. He anticipates the communal nature of a live theatre experience will create a strong emotional reaction from the audience. “With cinema, there is a distance between you and the screen and, with a book, you are reading on the page and can put it down. It’s a completely different experience when the actors are right there in front of you performing it. “I hope audiences will be moved by it. Those who haven’t read the book may well be taken by surprise and
shocked at the ending, but that was the reaction of the original readers to the book. The playwright and the theatrical producers want people to come out with an emotional response as well.” an author of nine novels for adults and four novels for younger readers, Boyne’s books have been published in 47 languages. The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas has an appeal for all ages with a recommendation of 11-plus.

Asparagus and broad bean penne with feta cheese The time of year has come when all those delicious fruits and vegetables that only show their faces for a couple months of the year are in season. The time has come to ditch the heavy winter dinners and eat fresher, lighter and more vibrant foods. So in honour of the approaching warmth of summer (so we say, filled with hope), here’s a fabulously simple and delicious pasta dish for you and all the family.
Ingredients: • One red onion, diced • One heaped teaspoon of mixed herbs • Two tablespoons of olive oil • Two cloves of garlic, finely chopped • The juice of a whole lemon • about 10 green olives, diced • a large bunch of fresh asparagus,
chopped into around 2cm-long pieces
• 200g feta cheese • One vegetable stock cube, dissolved in about 30ml of boiling water

• Two handfuls of baby spinach • 190g broad beans • Large splash of white wine • salt and pepper to taste • 350g penne pasta (cooked until El Dente)
Method: Fry the onion, garlic and herbs in the olive oil and half of the lemon juice. season with salt and pepper – be generous with the pepper but careful with the salt as the cheese is quite salty already. add the olives and the stock, stir, then the asparagus and broad beans, and stir again. Next, add the spinach and the rest of the lemon juice, crumble in the feta cheese, and give it a good mix before adding the white wine. Leave to simmer for around five or six minutes. If the mix looks a little thick, add some boiling water to loosen it up slightly. Now add the cooked pasta to the sauce and mix well. serve with a simple green salad tossed with olive oil and lemon juice (we used baby spinach). This dish tastes gorgeous fresh out of the pan, but it will serve perfectly as a cold pasta salad the following day – that’s the beauty of it! Mulbarton Words Week Sunday 31 May to Saturday 6 June 2015

e will soon see the first ever Mulbarton Words Week taking place in and around the South Norfolk village of Mulbarton. The week aims to celebrate the written and spoken word and will showcase both established and up-and-coming authors, songwriters and poets – the majority of whom live in the East Anglian region.
Organised by Mulbarton Book Club, the week kickstarts with a words-themed pub quiz at The World’s End on sunday, May 31. This will be followed on Monday by a talk by author Brian Nevill, whose book Boom Baby recalls growing up in 1950s and 60s south London; freelance journalist, author and poet, sandie shirley, who lives in Tacolneston; and atlas author and local history expert, Jill Wright, from Mulbarton. Together, they will be giving an insight into the work involved in researching, writing and publishing.

he long-running suffolk Open studios initiative has announced that over 128 suffolk artists will be opening their studios to the public over the weekends of June 2015. as always, visitors will be treated to a huge range of art, from watercolours and acrylics, to photography and printmaking, and jewellery and sculpture. Everyone is sure to find local art that captures their interest, which is why the event grows bigger each year.
Chairman of suffolk Open studios, Tom Lund-Lack, whose vision drives the initiative, said: “I love the variety in artists that we attract each year; returning artists, up-and-coming artists, as well as established ones who are new to Open studios. We hope to have record numbers of visitors this year as previous years of success suggest we will.” suffolk Open studios has been running since 1993 and has grown from its humble beginnings of a group of around 15 local artists in the snape and aldeburgh area. day out for visitors. a number also demonstrate their craft, allow the public to try their skill for themselves and provide refreshments. although there are some ready-mapped trails available, suffolk Open studios covers such a big area, visitors are encouraged to use the website and directory in advance to check routes and opening weekends to make a day of it. “We encourage suffolk Open studios guests to plan their route, including somewhere to stop for lunch, to ensure an enjoyable day that runs smoothly,” explained Tom. “This is an experience designed to open your mind to art, there is no pressure to buy but please leave with your head full of creativity and inspiration!” The suffolk Open studios committee is also keen to keep growing and to attract new artists to join. artists nearly always work alone which may feel lonely at times and means there may not always be a source of feedback for new ideas and work. We’ve had feedback from members before
that being part of the Open studios network gives artists a sense of belonging and a ready-made network for discussion on all things arty and creative! With their membership, artists receive exposure via the Open studios website, social media and of course, in the directory. In the lead up to June, some of our artists will be participating in art about Town, a scheme which collaborates with friendly local shops, cafes and restaurants allowing artists to exhibit to help promote their work. Woodburners: The latest “must have” for your home

ince the dawn of civilisation people have been lighting fires for both cooking and heating purposes. now in the modern age of central heating, gas fires and electric heaters you would think that lighting fires would be something of the past – but you’d be wrong!
Woodburners have become a “must have” for many households. The market for woodburning stoves has grown by 20% per annum since 2007, according to Hetas – the industry regulatory body. This equates to around 175,000 households per year!

However, most stoves are 70% plus these days, with some achieving over 80%. 3. Wood or multi-fuel stove Wood is a carbon-neutral fuel, as the carbon it gives off is counteracted by the carbon it takes in while growing. a woodburning stove is designed to run only on firewood, whereas a multi-fuel stove will run on either solid fuel, anthracites, smokeless fuel nuggets or wood. some multi-fuel stoves can be run on “slumber” overnight, whereas woodburning stoves can’t, but you will need to have the chimney swept at least once a year. 4. stove installation You will need a qualified installer to ensure the installation meets building regulations. Spring lawn care top-tips Why do we think grass stops growing?
While it certainly slows right down, our lawns never actually stop growing throughout the year and therefore neither should the cutting. But it’s hard to say exactly how often the mower needs to come out at this time of year – it’s just when it needs doing! But one thing’s for sure, there’s no need to leave your lawn looking a mess during the colder months of the year when you take such pride in it during the summer.
However, there are some things to remember:
Most importantly, never walk on the grass when there is a frost because it breaks the grass blades. also, try to keep debris off the lawn, as fallen branches and leaves can do damage when left lying on the grass. Do not try to mow the lawn if the ground is waterlogged or if the soil is soft. But otherwise, at this time of year simply set the blade higher than usual, make sure it is nice and sharp, and just be careful when turning not to drag the machine and tear the grass.
What can I do to improve my lawn?
Hopefully you have already applied a spring fertiliser; this will strengthen the root zone and promote new growth. a moss-control treatment will also help. Watch out for birds pecking at the lawn because they may have found chafer grub – a nasty pest that eats the roots of grass and can soon devastate a lawn. If this is the case, treatments are available to help remove the bugs from your garden quicker than a bird is able to. spring is also the time to consider scarification – a method that in effect rakes out old grass stems, dead moss and debris – this can be done as soon as new growth appears. You may even chose to get professionals in to take the burden of this job away from you. Now you can enjoy a healthy lawn that won’t require weeks to bring it back to its best for summer!

hat’s the difference between a back garden and a back yard? Simple, plants make a garden, whereas yards tend to be used for storage or parking. Of course, if your outside space just contained plants you wouldn’t get through the door without stepping on a few, gardens are made up of many different elements and the plants are just one part.
a beautiful garden is a balance between the plants, the essential and practical things such as paths, sheds and fences, plus items that are placed around to enhance the overall appearance, and to allow the plants to be shown off, or appreciated, at their best. Climbing plants such as honeysuckle or jasmine need some form of support, you could just grow them up a pole or allow them to scramble through a mature shrub, and depending on your garden style this may be fine, but imagine how nice they might look over an elegant wooden arch spanning a pathway, where you can enjoy their fragrance as you pass underneath. similarly, how about building a pergola (available as a complete kit) which would give robust support for several climbing choices, such as roses, wisteria, or even a grapevine where bunches of fruit will offer temptation dangling down from above as they ripen in the sun.
Top tip - Obelisks create stately focal points for moderate climbers such as colourful sweet peas, blousy clematis, or maybe some tasty climbing French or runner beans. Gardens are not all about work, they are spaces to relax and unwind in after a busy day, a private retreat in which to immerse ourselves away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. The feeling of privacy is an issue for many
people, so why not create an intimate space by installing a screen of trellis around your seating area, either freestanding, or over a raised planter made up of rusticlooking mini timber sleepers, that way you can surround yourselves with some lush planting creating your very own outdoor sanctuary.

ver the space of 40 years, my greatgrandfather gradually changed his name from uriah Hircock to Hugh Lillie Harcourt. The census returns over those years show the following names: uriah Hircock (1851) ➢ uriah Hircock (1861) ➢ uriah L Harcourt (1871) ➢ Hugh Hircock (1881) ➢ Hugh Harcourt (1891). It is irksome that my mother, Uriah’s granddaughter, knew all about the name change and the reasons for it. she had promised to tell me all about it one day – hereby hangs the regret – but she never did. I remember sitting beside her hospital bed, debating whether to ask her about it. Would it be an indication that she was about to die and would it upset her? The dilemma sadly resolved itself all too quickly. My late uncle had all the documents that related to the name change, but his widow had cleared out all the “in-laws” papers and photographs. at this point I fear it is the end of the quest to solve this riddle – but I will not give up as something might turn up one day. If only I had…
Many years ago a casual conversation about family history lead to the discovery of a wonderful family photograph. It was found on the wall of a house in North Walsham which was known to have once been owned by the Wilson family. I found a local, elderly gentleman who said he had known the baby in the picture; it was a Florence Harriet Wilson – my grandmother – born in 1870. she had told him that it was her in the photo along with her mother, father and grandfather (my great-great-grandfather, William Wilson, born in 1811). This all gave more meaning to my father’s stories about little granddad and big granddad, which related to their size rather than their age. I’m glad I did…

Collecting inkwells and writing compendia
i
nkwells have been around for thousands of years and have been made out of almost every material imaginable – iron, bronze, brass, treen, stone, marble, leather, silver, ceramics and more. The main period of history for collectors is from around 1750 to 1930 and the history of inkwells is complex; they are, of course, linked to the history of writing, education and social class.
The collection of three ecritoires – French for “writing cases” – below, illustrate the desire once upon a time for writing sets to be produced in quality boxes. More often made from tortoiseshell, mother of pearl, shark skin and natural agates, plus edged in silver, the box became as important as the tools it contained! High-quality ecritoires with their original contents are now almost impossible to find and are highly sought after by collectors.
Powerful rulers, priests, court officials and doctors moved around the country and their “scribe” – the person who did their writing – accompanied them. It was important that writing equipment was portable and, over centuries, the design of writing equipment was influenced by attempts to make it easier for scribes to travel without being burdened by excessively-heavy cases of equipment. Portability was facilitated by making things smaller, lighter and multi-functional. By the 20th century, the journey ended with the fountain pen – the ultimate compendium, with its own ink reservoir, durable nib and a carrying clip. These components were essentially the same as the 18th century Penner, which had its own inkwell, quill knife, sander and sharpenable quill, all in a carrying case.
Travelling inkwells, such as the ones seen below, developed through time from being purely functional to being almost novelty. They were made in the shapes of hat boxes, rugby balls, doctors’ bags, suitcases, walking canes and pistols. Exotic animal and bird designs were also popular with the Victorians and were purchased on the grand tours of the wealthy.

“learn the grammar and Latin tongue” In the third of her series of articles about education in our region over the centuries, sarah Doig examines the fascinating life of our ancient grammar schools.
P
rior to the 19th century, most education had to be paid for by the pupil’s family. And, since the advent of universities in the medieval period, the aim of schools was to prepare boys for university education, concentrating on the classics and other traditional subjects. These schools were known as grammar schools – often founded by local benefactors and supported by an initial endowment which was topped up by further endowments and bequests in wills.
The origins of Eye Grammar school, which closed in 1965, date from around 1495. A licence was granted by the Lord of the Manor for the grammar school, stipulating that “they might teach all the seven sciences”. The subjects to which this refers are logic, rhetoric, arithmetic, music, geometry and astronomy. The original school was held in the Guildhall situated next to the church – a building which survives today. Regulations dating from 1566 for the grammar school in Eye state that boys were to “learn the grammar and Latin tongue” and had to be able to read Latin and English before they were admitted. The schoolmaster was to receive £10 a year, and had also to maintain

the church choir when required, present a comedy or tragedy performed by the scholars once a year and also ensure that the scholars attended church on sundays and holy days. Most grammar school endowments made provision for the education of a number of free pupils, usually local boys. The schoolmaster’s salary was often covered by this endowment and he would then take in paying day scholars and/or boarders to top up his money. The former Eye Grammar School The number of free places varied greatly in East Anglia, from just a handful to over 40 in Framlingham and Beccles. sir Nicholas Bacon of Redgrave Hall founded Botesdale Grammar school in 1561 in the former Chantry Chapel (now Botesdale Chapel of Ease). His endowment allowed for a £20 yearly salary for the master, £8 per year for an usher and 40 shillings for repairs to the school buildings. Bacon also set out lengthy ordinances – rules – for the school. It was to be limited to 60 pupils, the sons of poor men were to be educated for free and had preference over wealthier sons, and the school day should begin at 6am in the summer, 7am in the winter, and finish at 5pm (apart from saturdays and holidays when school ended at 3pm). Parents had to provide their sons with ink, paper, pens, books, a candle for winter, a bow and three arrows, bowstrings, a shooting glove and a brace to practice shooting. y now, you may be thinking that I am a grammar-purist with a stack of reference works on correct English usage by my side… well, yes and no. Currently my pile contains The Kings English by Fowler and Fowler, which reveals its age by its very name, and on top of that is the immeasurably more readable Eats, Shoots & Leaves by Lynne Truss, who has a common-sense approach and lighthearted literary style. But it does matter – correct use of language and punctuation ensures that the right information is transmitted to the recipient. Consider this unpunctuated sentence; it would throw a fastidious hostess into a paroxysm of uncertainty:
We invited George a woman and a good friend to dinner so how many people are coming? Let’s punctuate the sentence and see if we can find out. I’ll sling a couple of commas in to start with: We invited George, a woman and a good friend, to dinner Or one could use dashes instead of commas without altering the meaning, which is clearer and probably preferable: We invited George – a woman and a good friend – to dinner Now it’s clear that only ONE extra place setting would be needed for Ms George smith, whom we consider to be a good friend. But look at the same sentence punctuated differently: We invited George (a woman) and a good friend to dinner In this instance the hostess would need TWO extra place settings on the table; one for Ms George smith and one for the good friend. Exactly whose “good friend” is unclear – it could be ours or George’s – but never mind that today. Let’s look at a third arrangement of punctuation marks: We invited George, a woman and a good friend to dinner Now THREE are coming: George (who could be male or female), an unnamed woman and someone’s good friend.

Next we have a sentence of only seven words that could give rise to a lawsuit if improperly punctuated: The man said the Judge was mad The man, said the Judge, was mad In the first instance it’s the Judge who is bonkers, and “the man” who is telling us about it. In the second example it’s “the man” who is potty according to the Judge. With quote marks it’s even clearer: “The man,” said the Judge, “was mad” Punctuation is all about clarity and precision; it informs the reader of things unspoken. Consider the difference between the following: My brother, Martin, is coming to dinner My brother Martin is coming to dinner In the first example, the commas serve to tell you that I only have one brother and his name is Martin. If both commas and the name were removed, the sentence would still imply that I only have one brother, but inserting his name gives him identity. The second example (without the commas) tells you that my brother Martin is coming but my other brothers are probably not. I will leave you with a sentence to practice on: This article is dedicated to my lovers Lynne Truss and God

sarah produces handmade, bespoke bridal tiaras and invests in people’s marriages with husband Alan. When the couple “tied the knot” sarah became the answer to Alan’s late wife’s dying wish when she lost her fight against cancer at just 31. “she wanted him to marry a good woman and have the children that she could not give him,” says the 41-year-old who will celebrate her 10th wedding anniversary in July. “Marriage is from God and it needs to be nurtured and when God is happy with the marriage you cannot go wrong,” says a triumphant sarah who has seen her creator rebuild her life after divorce with a new life partner and two young children. “When I focus on the tiaras I make, I see God shining through because he has restored my life and made me shine from when life seemed so bleak.” she launched Hartfelt Tiaras last summer and makes fascinators while using her hairdressing skills of 25 years to dress bridal hair. Gift-boxed tiaras are made with intricate wire, freshwater pearls and swarovski crystals denoting the bride’s personality and wedding theme. “My work enables me to be creative

and have time for Alan and our two young children,” says sarah who donated a tiara to last year’s Wymondham carnival queen. she found her saviour Jesus when she was nine and was baptised with her two sisters five years later. she grew up with the nurture and love of Christian parents who were farmers but says: “From a little girl I had a massive delight for weddings and confetti and I was thrilled by hair and creating.” During her early career tragedy struck when her two-year marriage ended. Vulnerable and hurting, her faith took a back seat as she looked for happiness elsewhere. “I was in love with the idea of being in love and I looked for love and a new spouse. Eventually I realised I needed to get my faith back on track because I could not live without God and I left my future in his hands,” says sarah who met widower, Alan, seven years later who “has been a healing touch from God with his kind and caring ways.” sarah prays for hurting people, is part of the worship team at Hope Community Church Wymondham and helps run a Biblical marriage course with Alan. she says: “My life has burst into bloom and I soar on the thermals of God’s love like the eagle.”

Does the prospect of planning a holiday or even an outing with a friend feel daunting because of your arthritis? Exercise, which is appropriate to your type of arthritis, is one of the most useful and direct ways that can help minimise pain and other limitations that arthritis may throw at you. Even if you are a wheelchair user, there are “seating” exercises that you can try. Before taking up exercising, just think about how much and what type of exercise you can plan into your day. The important point is not to do too much so you don’t aggravate your condition. Try to resist the temptation to overdo things on “good” days and combine exercise together with some relaxation into your day for the upmost benefit.
Making the first step is always the hardest, so if you don’t like exercising on your own why not find a buddy? Together you can try gentle exercise classes, such as Tai-Chi, Pilates or even chair-based exercises. By taking part in a suitable exercise programme, eating healthily and thinking positively you will soon start to feel a difference. In the Norwich area, Group Arthritis in Norfolk (GAIN) meets bi-monthly for social support and interesting talks from health specialists about coping with arthritis.

Local women’s sport advocate launches website

ifelong sports fan, Jennie Powell, moved to Eye in suffolk with her husband in 2009 after nine years of living and working in the Netherlands.
At the beginning of last year, Jennie declared in a hissy fit that she intended to begin her own sports website. The hissy fit was caused by growing frustration, first at being unable to follow the progress of the England women’s cricket team in Australia as they played back-to-back Ashes tours, then as she struggled to find out how the women’s 6 Nations rugby was progressing. so began several months of research and late nights as Jennie’s husband built the website she had dreamed of.
4 the Love of Sport was eventually launched in september 2014, covering England’s senior women’s football, hockey, netball, rugby union and cricket teams.
British forces women’s sport is also Jennie aims for 4 the Love of gradually being added to the website, Sport to be the leading UK following a suggestion from Jennie’s women’s sports site father-in-law – a retired army lieutenant colonel. she also hopes to cover women’s rugby league and basketball in the not-too-distant future. “I find these women so inspiring, they don’t complain, they just get on with it and each day I discover something new to admire,” she said. “For instance, most of the rugby team took unpaid leave in order to train and compete in the World Cup. some were even brave enough to give up their jobs completely! Now, 20 of them have been given professional contracts – but some have taken a pay cut in doing so.” Jennie’s passion for sport is no new thing; she was instrumental in starting youth football clubs in both the UsA and UK when her children were young. Whilst watching her son play football at a soccer camp, she

With the encouragement of other parents, Jennie advertised football training sessions and some 30-odd children turned up at the first one! A football club was born, which grew to include eight teams, including two girls’ teams that Jennie coached herself. Jennie even passed her referees exam in order to gain a little more credibility among the men! Her motivation for the website was brought on by frustration at the amazing successes being achieved by sportswomen int internationally, with so little acclaim. team won back-toback Ashes series, plus summer tours against both India and south Africa; the rugby team won the World Cup and came second in the 6 Nations; and the football team qualified unbeaten for the 2015 World Cup – almost filling Wembley on their first appearance there. “Pick up any newspaper and you’ll be lucky to find one story covering women’s sport,” explained Jennie. “But we have a chicken and egg situation; in order to generate bigger crowds there needs to be more media attention and to encourage more media attention we need more interest and bigger crowds.”

I suffer with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) and, although this means there is no cancer present, is there any way to deal with the everyday discomfort of it?
An enlarged prostate is a common problem in men, especially as they mature but fortunately there are many ways to improve the symptoms of BPH and protect against any further development of the problem. One of easiest ways is altering your diet.

A study in the Journal of Nutrition found that higher dietary intake of carotenoids (the colourful stuff found in carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, butternut squash, mangos, apricots, peaches, pears, pineapple, nectarines and papaya) and vitamin C were both associated with a decrease in BPH symptoms. Having a diet that is high in fresh vegetables – veg loses nutrients as it ages – and low in saturated fat is another simple alteration that will help. The saturated fats you want to avoid are those from fatty meat and heavily-processed meat products, because they have an inflammatory effect. swap these for healthy fats, found in unsalted, unroasted

nuts, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, avocados and oily fish – such as salmon, mackerel, herring, trout, sardines and tuna. To cheer you further as you contemplate your plant-based, “nutty” and delicious future diet, moderate alcohol consumption (no more than 2-3 units per day) is associated with the easing of BPH symptoms. Finally, it is well worth considering a daily supplement of the herb saw Palmetto, which acts to restore the prostate health and size, so you will soon start to feel better. Annabel Karmel’s MUMP RENEUR Annabel Karmel is a UK authority on feeding babies, children and families. With 40 books under her belt, she’s on a mission to encourage other working mums onto the path of business success. In her latest book, Mumpreneur, Karmel encourages any mum with an entrepreneurial streak to become a mumpreneur and give their own business idea a go. What’s a mumpreneur? Annabel explains… “A mumpreneur is a mother who starts a business to follow her vision and her passion and to be the master of her own destiny in a way that will allow her to fulfil her role as a parent in a way that she wants. It can be done – and the stats prove it – the number of selfemployed women is rising at nearly three times the rate of men.” What can readers expect to get from your book? “I’m on a mission to empower mums wanting to become their own boss, and my brand new book, Mumpreneur, is filled with practical advice and inspiring stories to help you get started. “After building my business from scratch, I’m now using my experience in juggling the demands of work and motherhood to help equip other mums with the selfbelief, skills and tools to set up their own businesses; from believing in yourself and your idea, to finding a niche, embracing your failures, and taking on investment. “Each chapter embraces a different ‘ingredient’for success. I want to install confidence and explain that, as
mothers, we’ve got so many skills – organisational, planning – all those sort of things that are very important when you set up your own business.” What finance advice can you give mumpreneurs? “I would advise against using your house as security to finance your start-up if it’s high-risk. I used my book royalties to start my business. It was me putting money from one business to another so I was fortunate, as it was quite risky setting up a food business when you consider the giants in the industry. It was a gamble for me but luckily it worked out.” Where should a mumpreneur run her business? “In the beginning it’s probably a good idea to run it from home because it keeps your costs down. I used my dining room, converted into my office, and I think I stayed there about four years. You might have a spare room, a garage or a shed. When I started to employ a full-time person I paid to take a bit of space in my husband’s office – right in the middle of the room where people came down the stairs – but eventually I got my own office. You don’t want massive overheads to begin with.” What helped you become a mumpreneur? “In setting up a business, it’s important to have a compelling story. For me I lost my child, and my second child was the world’s worst eater. I ran a playgroup and would give out my baby food recipes on bits of paper. The mothers said, ‘These are fantastic, you should write a book about feeding children!’and it’s exactly what I did. “I never thought it would be successful, never expected it to turn into a career, but it was something that kind of came out of what happened to me; losing my child, having a child who wouldn’t eat. I had a compelling story and the book ended up selling four million copies.” Mumpreneur, Annabel’s new business book for mums, is out now.

Smart Money Secrets don’t let overseas card fees take the shine off your holiday

ith the summer holiday season fast approaching now’s a good time to check that your “plastic” is a suitable travel companion. It may be that you need to consider applying for a different card in advance of your trip – one that isn’t going to cost you an arm and a leg when used outside the UK.
Traditional debit and credit cards may offer a secure and convenient way to pay, but the fees and charges vary greatly and are often an expensive way to pay when abroad, so it’s worth thinking of a cheaper alternative before you travel. Foreign-usage fees Most traditional banks add on a “foreign-usage fee” to all credit card purchases and ATM cash withdrawals abroad. In most cases it’s an extra 2.75% to 2.99%, but that’s only half the story… on top of the foreign usage fee, most credit cards charge a
withdrawal fee of around 3% anyway. so £100 worth of Euros from the hole in the wall can easily set you back a combined charge of around £6, thus best avoided. As with credit cards, there is typically a 2.75% to 2.99% usage fee for cash withdrawals made using UK debit cards abroad, plus an ATM withdrawal charge of usually between £1.50 and £5.00. That said, the debit card charge that catches most people out are those made on foreign purchases which are subject to a usage fee, plus up to an additional £1.50 per transaction regardless of the amount being spent. Among the offenders are Halifax (£1.50 per purchase transaction abroad), santander (£1.25), Lloyds Bank and TsB (both £1) – so it’s worth spending a couple of minutes checking with your bank what the charges are for your
plastic before you set off, rather than getting a nasty shock when you check your account on your return. What are my options? If you’re looking for a fee-free overseas debit card, look at opening a current account with either Norwich & Peterborough Building society or Metro Bank, for example. Prepaid currency cards are another payment option whilst abroad – these are chip and PIN secure, accepted wherever you see the MasterCard symbol and offer a far cheaper way to pay than most high-street debit and credit cards. Are prenups legally binding?
Not in the UK (yet!), but there have been recent court cases where couples have been made to stand by a prenup on divorce, even when one of them wanted to change their mind. Every case is different, but as a general principle, prenups are more likely to be upheld in court if: 1. Each party’s needs are taken into account – especially where there’s children involved. 2. Each party has taken legal advice on the prenup before signing it. 3. Each party has disclosed details of their wealth to the other party to ensure the prenup was signed in full knowledge of the facts. 4. It was freely entered into by both parties – neither party was pressured into signing.

Village wanderings The Burnhams
This stretch of the north Norfolk coast is within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB): a salt marsh wildness, serpentined with tidal creeks and pools and, at this time of year, frequented by large gatherings of migrating birds. This figure-of-eight walk begins at Burnham Norton and loops round Norton Marsh, then continues inland to Burnham Overy Town. Crossing fields, the route drops down on to the marshes then Burnham Overy Staithe, before returning to the starting point.
1 These Brent Geese were just one of the many species of birds spotted whilst walking. Their noisy conversational call was likened to a ‘swarm of bees’! 2 The white-sailed windmill and the nearby watermill (3 below) were both built by Edmund Savory. The watermill dates from 1790 and is flanked by a row of workers’ cottages. The windmill was built in 1816. Both properties are now owned by the National Trust and let as holiday accommodation.

After a dull start the sun, as usual, shone for us. The sound of the bird life was so evocative of the area in winter: the piping of Redshank, the haunting flute of Curlew and the wild ‘yelping’ of high skeins of Pink-footed geese. An agile hunting Merlin was the star bird of the day.
