One thing I LOVE about my job is hearing all about new local businesses opening up. I especially like it when we have exclusive reader offers to tell you all about and this issue is no exception. build your own aT norwich casTle museum From Saturday 3 October, Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery will be exhibiting Build Your Own: Tools for Sharing. Running until 3 January 2016, the exhibition, which debuted in Liverpool, provides a fascinating insight into today’s making revolution. It will feature robots that can manage gardens, a global network producing prosthetic hands created by 3D printing, and will explore new ways of repairing city spaces, empowering communities and reflecting local craft traditions. An exciting programme of events and workshops will run alongside the show in various Norwich locations, designed to engage people of all ages, experience and knowledge. Hannah Higham, curator at Norwich Castle Museum, said: “Build Your Own is a dynamic exhibition that is constantly evolving. It is about celebrating making and the use of both old and new tools.”

The newly-published No-Nonsense Guide to Green Parenting aims to inspire families about nature and encourage them to take steps to look after the planet and themselves in a fun, ecofriendly way. Boasting a real local flavour, the book’s author, illustrator and photographs are all South Norwich-based and the book launch is taking place at Jarrold in Norwich this October. Kate Blincoe, the book’s author and local freelance journalist, said:“This book will help your family open your doors to the outside and become truly free-range animals. You’ll live a greener lifestyle and your children will learn to enjoy, appreciate and care for the world around them.”

IT WOULDN’T BE FAYRE TO MISS THIS Glittering lights will fill the sky above the Abbey Gardens as this year’s Bury St Edmunds Christmas Fayre opens in spectacular style. Starting at 4pm on Thursday 26 November, the event will bring discounted fairground rides, a children’s parade from the stage in the Arc, and the annual East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) carol concert at the cathedral at 6pm. The opening evening will then close with a

fantastic fireworks display. The fayre continues all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with more than 300 Christmas market stalls, live music and Santa in his Abbey Gardens Grotto from noon on Friday. Add to the mix fun fairs, face painting, street entertainers, a Christmas bazaar, historical stalls in Moyse’s Hall Museum, water walkers, a snow dome, a climbing wall and a Dr Who exhibition – and it promises to be another unmissable weekend.

A local cookbook that raises funds for a worthy local cause has just been published.

From Soup to Syllabub is a recipe book containing a collection of over 70 varied recipes from the kitchens of Eye and the surrounding villages. What’s more, book sales are being put towards the continued restoration of Eye Town Hall. Magnificent Obsessions: The Artist as Collector celebrates the many and varied motivations for collecting artwork and the exhibition presents the fascinating personal collections of postwar and contemporary artists, including Andy Warhol, Arman, Peter Blake, Edmund de Waal, Damien Hirst, Howard Hodgkin, Sol LeWitt, Martin Parr, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Pae White.

While many of the participating artists are recognised internationally, their collections are often less well known, and the majority have never been seen in our region before this exhibition. The collections range from mass-produced memorabilia to rare art and artefacts, from natural history specimens to curios, as well as objects reflecting popular culture. Magnificent Obsessions: The Artist as Collector is curated and organised by Barbican Centre, London, and comes to an end on 24 January 2016.

lasswells is an out-oftown warehouse-style superstore – perhaps the last place you might expect to find an eatery; and a good one at that. So after drooling over the fabulous furniture department, and the trendy curtains, bedding and fabrics, we made our way to The Place to Eat, based on the ground floor within the store itself.

When the waitress came to show us to a table, we asked if we could sit at one outside. The menu offered brunches, sandwiches, and jacket potato lunches. There was about 25 choices in total, each one about £5 or £6, and including vegetarian options. The waitress returned to take our order once we were acquainted with the choices – it was so nice not to have to trawl back to the counter. My companion chose a seafood pancake that contained smoked hake, salmon, prawns and pollock in white sauce, together with a decent-sized serving of mixed salad. I had stuffed peppers; half a red one, half a yellow, filled with mince and onion mix made to a Bolognese recipe and topped with melted cheese. Mine was accompanied by brown rice and assorted vegetables were mixed in with it. My friend’s pancake disappeared before I had a chance to taste it, but it was pronounced perfect. My peppers were fabulous, and quite filling, and I loved the brown rice for a change from white – so much more taste. I drank a medium-sized white wine and my friend chose freshly squeezed orange juice, which again was a generous serving.

For pudding, we considered some of the tempting cakes and gateaux that we had spotted on the way through to our table, but I succumbed to ice cream and my friend chose the peach and almond tart with custard. Both came beautifully served; indeed the whole meal was elegant without being pretentious. It was good, honest, professional food. We both followed with an espresso coffee that came with a long tubular crispy biscuit and a glass of water – perfect! We could have chosen from an extensive range of coffees and teas, including Darjeeling or Assam, both of which are rare to see, or even a “Bambinochino” for the children, which appeared to be a sweet, frothy milk with a dusting of cocoa. Service was brisk and unobtrusive, and the restaurant was decently busy with people of all ages. The

shop itself has wheelchairs to borrow, and cars may drive right up to the entrance before going to park. There are lifts in the shop, a very spacious layout, and the loos are wonderful. And of course I fell in love with some furniture!

Hand bagged

Susie Blake cements her deserved title “national treasure” whilst playing the Queen in her latest role. The hit West End comedy she stars in, Handbagged, comes to Norwich Theatre Royal from Tuesday 10 to Saturday 14 November.

roving her versatility as an actress – from a prim and proper TV announcer on Victoria Wood As Seen On TV, to Deirdre Barlow’s best friend on Coronation Street – Susie has enjoyed a dynamic career. She has also worked with some of the country’s most highly-regarded companies. But preparing to play the Queen in her latest show, Handbagged, is just the challenge she was after. The comedy, which follows the relationship between the monarch and former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher during the Iron Lady’s 11 years in power, is already a hit in the West End. Susie admits the role is a challenge but also strangely comforting. “The Queen has become more and more a part of my life. As you get older and you lose your parents, you think she is the one person who has been around all the time. For a lot of us, she is the only monarch we have known and has been a constant presence.” The show chronicles the Queen and Thatcher’s weekly meetings through a host of key events and, though it does reflect some of the major events and news stories which shaped history, it also sees how the relationship between the two most powerful women in the land evolved and changed. And while a lot of the show merely imagines what they talked about,

Handbagged also looks at the many moral issues the two faced. Susie explained: “It is really interesting to see that a lot of the things they were doing were right. You also find yourself having more sympathy with Mrs Thatcher; she really did believe she had come up with the best solutions for dealing with problems, and that she and the Queen would be on the same page.” It’s not a far cry from where Susie’s life in the performing world began. She trained at the world-famous Elmhurst Ballet School, went to the Arts Ed and Lamda drama schools, and began professional acting at Leeds Playhouse. Her theatre career has encompassed productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre, UK tours of The Rocky Horror Show and Boeing Boeing, and even a spell in the West End playing Madame Horrible in Wicked.

Waveney Valley Food & Drink Festival Friday 2 October to Sunday 11 October

he fourth annual Waveney Valley Food & Drink Festival will be based in the seven market towns of Beccles, Bungay, Diss, Eye, Halesworth, Harleston and Loddon – as well as in the surrounding countryside and villages.

The event centres on the fantastic food and drink that the Waveney Valley has to offer from its fertile pastures, arable land, forestry and river. It also increases awareness of the many food and drinkrelated businesses in the area. Local growers, farmers, producers and retailers as well as pubs, restaurants and cafes will host numerous “foodie” events offering an opportunity to try, buy, learn about and enjoy products direct from the producer and retailer. It’s a chance to taste something new; visit a working farm to find out what’s involved in raising our meat and poultry, producing milk and cheese or eggs; see a demonstration from a local food and drink producer to discover how our favourite goodies are made; enjoy a menu of local food and drink from some of the area’s best restaurants, cafes and pubs; and visit a farmers’ market to buy fresh fruit, veg, meat, bread and more, direct from those who made it, grew or raised it.

A new festival event for this year will be “Taste of Harleston” on 3 October, including the Harleston Country Kitchen Street Market – something a little bit different – with cookery books, kitchenalia, cake decorating, kitchen antiques, arts, crafts and street performers. The Festival culminates with the two-day Waveney Valley Food & Drink Festival Fair on the weekend of October 10 and 11. It will be set against the beautiful backdrop of Bungay Castle and visitors are invited to browse stands from local producers, selling an array of delicious goodies, such as cakes and pastries, organic vegetables, meat and poultry products, preserves and chutneys, oils and sauces. There will also be a programme of live music, cookery and butchery demonstrations, as well as various children’s activities.

In the second of a series looking back at aspects of life in our region, Sarah focuses on what farming was like 150 years ago, 100 years ago and 50 years ago in East Anglia.

arming was at an undisputed peak in East Anglia 150 years ago, during 1865. There were over 6,500 farmers in Norfolk alone, who were mostly farming under 100 acres. Their methods were largely the same as they had been at the beginning of the 19th century; they used the four-crop rotation system and produced their own manure and their own fodder for livestock. But they were experimenting with early, artificial fertilisers and beginning to use manufactured cattle feed.

The 1860s also saw huge developments in farm building. Many new farm outbuildings were constructed in an “E” or “U” shape, with shelter sheds enclosing the yards, for more efficient working units. One of these buildings was Hall Farm, South Lopham. The newly-designed farmstead consisted of three cart horse stables with yards and shelter sheds, two bullock yards, cow byres and a yard, piggeries with boiling houses, and a barn. At the outbreak of the First World War, one of the leading trade magazines reassured its readers that

One time and labour-saving innovation during WWI was the steam tractor, which drew ploughs and reapers previously driven by horses and men

“agriculture of all industries is the least likely to be affected by the war”. But it soon became evident that the country could no longer import flour and animal feed in the quantities it had before. In 1915, farmers were instructed to increase output by growing successive cereal crops on existing arable land. They were also asked to return back to arable land previously laid down to pasture but, at the same time, the government did not want the number of livestock to decrease. So the war years proved a huge challenge for the farming community in East Anglia. Despite skilled farm labourers being formally exempt from having to enlist in the armed forces, Norfolk list a third of its workers; a higher proportion than any other county. Fifty years later, in 1965, it was livestock farming that saw big change. In the early parts of that decade, the consumption of pork, in contrast to beef and lamb, had risen by about 50 per cent. There were also more subsidies available for pig farming. As a result, the pig population in Norfolk rose by 120 per cent, surpassing every other county in England and Wales. And it is the numerous pig fields still visible from almost every road in the region today that is one of the most memorable sights in East Anglia. burgundy venison The perfect autumn dish

Head chef, Ian, from Sherbourne House in Attleborough shares his delicious seasonal recipe with us.

Prep time: 25 Minutes Cooking time: 31/2 hours Servings: 6 to 8

Method:

1. Marinade the red wine, beef stock, brandy, onion, carrots, garlic, parsley, thyme, rosemary, peppercorns, cloves, and venison pieces overnight in the fridge.

Ingredients: 2 glasses dry red wine

1 dried bay leaf

2. Separate venison, vegetables and marinade.

0.5 pint beef stock

1 tsp crushed juniper berries

3. Melt two tablespoons butter in a large saucepan then fry bacon until crisp.

1.5kg venison, diced

4. Remove bacon, add venison and cook over high heat until browned.

0.5 glass of brandy 1 white onion, chopped into large pieces 2 carrots, peeled and cut into 2 inch pieces

8 oz bacon, cut thickly then coarsely chopped 3 tbsp softened butter

2 garlic cloves, crushed and chopped

1 tbsp tomato paste

1 tsp chopped parsley

1 lb shallots, peeled

1 tsp dried thyme,

1 lb button mushrooms

1 tsp dried rosemary

0.5 tsp salt

3 cloves, whole

5 peppercorns

1 tsp allspice berries

1 tbsp plain flour

2 tbsp olive oil

5. Remove venison, sautĂŠ the marinade vegetables in the pan with the remaining fats for about five minutes. 6. Drain, then stir in tomato paste and remaining marinade liquid to form a smooth sauce and return the meats to the saucepan. 7. Cover with a lid and cook in oven on a very low heat for about three hours, until venison is very tender. 8. Halfway through, skim fat from the sauce, sautĂŠ the shallots in a large pan for 10 minutes, then add the mushrooms, salt and pepper and cook for another five minutes. 9. Mix the final tablespoon of softened butter and plain flour to make a roux. Stir into the shallot mixture until it thickens slightly, then add to stew in the oven.

an experience like no other

ou may remember the television pictures from 1967 of Francis Chichester sailing his yacht, Gipsy Moth IV, back into Plymouth after a 28,500-mile, 226-day voyage around the world.

He commissioned the single-handed yacht and aimed for a 100-day passage to Sydney. Weekly radio contact with Chichester was reported in the newspapers but there was no safety support, so the nation held its breath. Chichester arrived after 107 days at sea but his yacht had suffered serious mechanical failure so repairs and modifications had to be made in Sydney. Gipsy Moth IV also capsized in a gale on the journey home – but she made it. Gipsy Moth IV sailing in 1967

Chichester was knighted at Greenwich by the Queen and for 37 years Gipsy Moth IV sat in a dry dock at Greenwich rotting away. But a nationwide appeal to restore her launched in 2005 and later, when she was almost certain to be sold overseas, she was saved by East Anglian business colleagues Eileen Skinner and Rob Thompson, who have since created The Gipsy Moth Trust. hat a mixed summer we had, lots of sunshine, interspersed with the occasional spell of rain, giving your garden a welcome drink. rain is wonderful stuff for plants as it contains a proportion of nutrients that plants can easily absorb (which is why everything looks so much fresher soon after a good downpour), unlike the ‘clean’ stuff piped to your door by the water company (although using this is infinitely better than failing to give your plants a drink at all!)

rainwater is also lime-free which is great for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons, leucothoe, camellias and blue hydrangeas. if you can, install water butts or tanks at any point where rain can be collected, from off your house, shed or greenhouse roof (or even off your patio or driveway if an underground tank is possible). our range of water butts come as complete kits including stand, butt with tap, child safety lid and easy to fit down-pipe diverter, so you’ll be ready to start collecting in no time, whilst helping to keep your water meter stationary. Plants, like us, need a constant supply of food and drink to keep them healthy, especially those grown in pots, baskets and other containers, so make sure you keep up a feeding regime. soluble feeds mixed with water will give the equivalent of a quick snack and should be applied regularly, whereas most granular forms tend to be slow-release in nature which gives plants a larder full of food to keep them growing for weeks. One of the most overlooked groups of plants are conifers, there are choices for all kinds of situations in many shapes, sizes, colours and textures, some are fast growers but many are slow, and as nearly all are evergreen and very hardy they make a fantastic low maintenance option for traditional and contempary gardens in pots and borders alike. Take a fresh look, try a few and you’ll soon see them in a different light!

Hopefully autumn will continue to bring us good weather, giving you the chance to sit outside a little longer with family and friends, so make sure that your patio and borders are looking in tip-top shape. if you made up displays of colourful bedding plants in the spring most varieties will have flowered themselves out and finished, so now is the perfect time to refresh them or create some new ones. Winter pansies and violas always bring a bit of welcome cheer with their painted faces, they’re a lot tougher than they look, just keep dead-heading them to encourage more blooms, and although they may look a bit sad in the worst of the Winter weather they’ll soon bounce back in the spring. these aren’t the only choices for arrangements at this time of year, mini cyclamen, ivy, heathers and wallflowers are all available from us now, together with a large selection of mini evergreens including lonicera, thymes, ajuga, euonymus and salvias, plus a selection of grasses. by combining some of these you can create an individual look for your garden, and for an extra special show in the spring tuck in some earlyflowering bulbs such as crocus, snowdrops or dwarf daffodils. if all this seems a bit complicated you could use just one evergreen shrub or perennial per pot, and as the sunlight is now lower in the autumn sky try to use varieties with glossy or coloured foliage for better impact, such as aucuba, holly, pieris, or maybe some heucheras, we have lots of the newest varieties at only £4.99 each. so get outside and enjoy some time in your garden, just don’t forget to feed and water!

t is hard to believe the Suzuki Vitara has been around since 1988. That makes me feel old because that’s the year I passed my driving test.

More than 26 years have gone by; I’m not 17 anymore and the Vitara heritage has evolved. Now the sports utility vehicle (SUV) has compact dimensions to meet contemporary needs and incorporates Suzuki’s cutting-edge ALLGRIP four wheel drive system as an option. Of course, one major thing has changed since 1988 – and that’s the automotive industry’s obsession with fuel efficiency and clean engines. The new Vitara certainly promises both, due to weight-saving measures and tech. A good example is the 1.6-litre DDiS model with two-wheel drive and six-speed manual transmission. It has CO2 emissions of just 106g/km.

But what about aesthetics? Well, the new car has a strong looking design. The clamshell bonnet gives the front end a look of solidity, and a trapezoid motif front bumper indicates a powerful grip on the ground. Pronounced body side character lines and bonnet side louvres form motifs reminiscent of the first generation Vitara. What’s more, Suzuki’s pursuit of good aerodynamics is reflected in optimally-designed bumper openings. It also shows in the roof line that slopes smoothly downward towards the rear. Additionally, LED headlamps contribute to energy saving while creating a cool impression. Step inside, and a boldly-shaped instrument panel indicates SUV toughness while the round clock and round ventilation louvres help give the cabin a youthful, sporty look. Some interior plastics still feel hollow and scratchy, but the important touch points are nicely padded. I drove the equivalent to the SZ5 1.6-litre DDiS ALLGRIP spec in Portugal recently. The diesel stands out with its powerful, torquey performance. 0-62mph arrives in 11.4 seconds and the top end is 112mph. A six-speed manual

transmission is mated to the engine. The gearbox is noticeably smooth and moving up and down the cogs is effortless, thanks to a shift lever counterweight. For those who don’t like left-foot action, you won’t have long to wait; a six-speed automatic will be available in the summer. Of course, Suzuki is renowned for its four wheel drive technologies and the previously-mentioned ALLGRIP system, which debuted on the S-CROSS, impresses. It has four modes, auto; sport; snow and lock, for safe, enjoyable motoring on diverse surfaces and has earned a deservedly great reputation. ntiques might not be the most conventional way to make money but, provided that you know what to look for, they can provide potentially impressive long-term returns.

Unless you are experienced, beware of buying “blind” from internet auction sites. As with most antiques, it is always best to see the piece for yourself and speak directly to the seller for its history. Also be aware, if buying at auction, that you will also need to pay a “buyer’s premium”. This will be a percentage of the final hammer price and can add as much as 30 per cent on top of the cost of the item you’ve bought.

Most machine-made pieces date after 1860, so if the piece you’re examining is perfectly finished without shallow cuts being evident, this clue points to it being made in the late 1800s or beyond. Machine-made furniture will have components that match more perfectly, whereas handmade pieces usually show some irregularities indicative of a hand plane being used. Screws weren’t made completely by machine until 1848, so if you find a furniture item using screws that have completely rounded shafts, pointed ends, and

What to look for

Different types of wood were used during different furniture periods and if you’re good at recognising them it helps determine the age of furniture. Oak was used prior to 1700, and mahogany and walnut were very popular thereafter. In the 1800s, maple and cherry were commonly used and Victorian furniture manufacturers used mostly mahogany and rosewood throughout the late 1800s. Then, around 1900, oak became very popular again.

hen former missionaries, Simon and Tania Davies adopted two special needs siblings it opened a new chapter of blessing and joy.

Despite sleepless nights and endless therapy, three year-old Harley and younger sister Daisy are heaven sent. “They inspire love and have expanded our ability to love,” says school teacher Simon. Tania, a trained nursery nurse who has worked with special needs children, adds: “We have also seen another side of love from our own teenage children who readily agreed to a new expanding family. “I have always been passionate about children and especially those with special needs. Three weeks after we married and while working at a nursery the fostering of two little boys broke down and I just wanted to bring them home.” Eighteen years later, the couple bring new life and hope to two youngsters with learning difficulties that few wanted to adopt because “most people want the perfect baby to enlarge or create their family,” says Tania. The couple’s love mission followed six years in Andalusia with the Spanish Gospel Mission. They moved to Mulbarton seven years ago and joined the church, finding a community of love and care that helped re-envision their lives. New direction came after reading about an inspirational Christian musician who adopted three Chinese children. “I had been thinking of what we could give. We are not very well off so we could not give much money but we did have a family and a bit of space to give a child a loving secure home and there are plenty of children here in the UK that need homes,” says Simon. The couple who moved to Costessey, Norwich, in April began the long adoption process. After seven months of set-backs and disappointments, Harley finally joined the family home and his two-year-old sister, Daisy, who has vision impairment, followed

after 10 months. The couple celebrate their birthdays and adoption days and, in January, Daisy and Harley met three of their siblings for the first time at a union party in Mulbarton. Daily therapy and specialist help encourages their development. Tania says: “I have worked with children who have autism and cerebral palsy which has given me experience and a network for professional help and I feel God has something special for these children. A church thanksgiving service was held for Daisy and Harley and we continue to persevere and take them to Sunday services; it is wonderful to see the joy on everyone’s face when we arrive.” Simon says: “God has prepared these children for us and he will continue to give us strength and provision for a walk of faith. “We would love to hear from other Christian adopters and foster carers in Norwich and Norfolk to create a support network, arrange informal gatherings and discuss ways to encourage churches to consider how they can support families to get involved in this important task under the umbrella of the charity Home for Good.” www.homeforgood.org.uk sim_davies@yahoo.co.uk

I endlessly worry that my teeth are decaying and have had a life-long fear that one day I will start losing my teeth. How can I prevent this from happening?

Like the rest of the body, good oral health can be supported by certain foods. Calcium provides structural support, protects against gum disease and helps keep jaw bones strong and healthy – preventing loosening teeth. Vitamin D helps absorb calcium, and vitamin C helps teeth and gums fight off bacterial infections, as well as preventing loose teeth and bleeding gums.

Sugar is sticky and therefore builds-up bacteria and plaque so, when you do consume sugary things, always try to wash them down with water. Most sugary drinks also contain phosphorous and carbonation, which wears away the enamel on your teeth, so always drink these with a straw to limit contact. Most people don’t manage it, but it’s recommended that you should brush your teeth for at least two minutes at a time, twice a day. Not much to ask!

However, you may have noticed the warning on a tube of toothpaste about the dangers of ingesting sodium fluoride. If concerned, avoid fluoride with a herbal toothpaste such as the Swiss company’s Bioforce Dentaforce toothpaste – they also have a mouthwash. Finally, visit your dentist regularly; they are the key to prevention.

The benefits of volunteering work both ways

oluntary Norfolk now runs a Health Volunteer Programme in South Norfolk, which involves matching volunteers with local people for befriending, driving, gardening and much more. “Our volunteers are marvellous because they provide a lifeline for many local residents,” said Karl Hills, Senior Co-ordinator for the charity. “Some help out for an hour a fortnight whilst others choose several hours a week, but their value cannot be measured in time alone.” Volunteering is a way to give something back, but is also an opportunity to benefit from new experiences, make friends, gain skills and have fun. There has recently been a rise in flexible volunteering so people without the time to commit to a regular activity can get involved too. Case study: Turning the tables Michael has been volunteering with Voluntary Norfolk since he was made redundant at the age of 58. Having given so much time to his career, he suddenly found himself with no reason to get up in the morning. He felt he’d lost his identity and was prescribed anti-depressants by his doctor. When the medication failed to help, the doctor suggested Michael started volunteering as a way of coming out of his shell and interacting with people once again.

Michael visited the Thetford branch of Voluntary Norfolk where his skills were soon put to good use. He now says volunteering was one of the best decisions he ever made.

Michael’s voluntary work has been a great benefit to both his own life and the community at large. He now helps more than Karl Hills, Senior Co-ordinator 15 people with transport for Voluntary Norfolk to medical appointments, help with shopping and spending time with people who are lonely and in need of company. He goes beyond the call of duty in a number of ways, such as phoning his clients to check they are okay. Last year, one of Michael’s clients faced being on their own over Christmas, so he invited them to spend Christmas with his family. On another occasion, he prepared an evening meal for a client who was tired of eating ready-meals. The people Michael helps say that his calls, his dependability and the time he spends with them is priceless. They often cherish the little moments of his time and attention. Michael believes volunteering has given him the identity he desperately needed and has brought him into contact with lots of interesting people from all sorts of backgrounds, each with a different story to tell. The book has images from his whole career, as well as a biography and a section demonstrating his working methods. This is a truly local interest title – having been written, designed and published in Norfolk – and with a local man as its subject.

The rumour spread that this was a ritual murder committed by the Jews of Norwich. In all likelihood that was completely false, but the story grew and became known as the “blood libel”. Method:

People have been cooking food on wooden planks for thousands of years. Fish gets a wonderful flavour, colour and texture from using smoking planks and they double-up as protection from the direct heat of the charcoal. Food is able to gently steam as it heats, releasing moisture and infusing flavour into the fish. The plank needs to be soaked in water for a minimum of 15 minutes before use so it does not ignite during cooking. In this recipe we are using a cedar plank, but you could also choose from oak, maple or alder. Tubby Jacks setup Set up your Tubby Jacks for “direct” cooking. You want it at 400°F/200°C with the stainless steel grid resting on the fire ring.

Golden Star Morris want to change that, and are inviting people to take a fresh look at what Morris dancing has to offer as a leisure pursuit by running some taster workshops. Formed in 1979 in the pub of the same name on Colegate in Norwich, Golden Star Morris were the first Morris group in the local area. Its men and women danced together – quite a radical thing at that time! Smart Money Secrets avoid the big banks for loans of £5,000 or less

espite bank base rates being stuck at 0.5 per cent, some banks are still charging interest at a staggering 20 per cent APR plus for personal loans of under £5,000.

same way you would a small loan as it allows you to transfer money from the card into your bank account with no fee. The interest rate is 6.6 per cent APR, so just set up a monthly standing order to pay it back.

The battle for our personal loan custom is as fierce as it’s ever been, but the problem is that many lenders are cherry-picking and focusing on the higher-value end of the market.

The potential cost savings on a loan of £3,000 using the above options could save you more than £20 per month, so don’t automatically assume your existing bank will offer the best rate as that’s rarely the case. It’s definitely worth spending 10 or 15 minutes shopping around for the lowest rate.

Five lenders are currently fighting to be top-dog and advertising record low-interest rates of between 3.6 per cent APR and 3.8 per cent APR – but only for larger amounts i.e. £7,500 and above. For lower-value loans, it’s a very different picture. The majority of lenders are charging double-digit rates on a £3,000 advance, with Barclays and Lloyds Bank amongst the most expensive at 22.9 per cent and 24 per cent APR respectively.

There are some much cheaper options out there and by taking advantage of deals from less well-known lenders you can save yourself a sizeable sum in interest charges.

My research shows you would do well to give the big banks a wide berth to get the best deals. There are three borrowing options that stand out if you want to borrow £5,000 or less: Zopa, the first peer-to-peer lender in the UK is now in its eleventh year, and RateSetter, one of the more recent but fastest growing lenders in the peer-topeer market, both offer some of the best value deals at 5.5 per cent APR and 8.1 per cent APR respectively for a £3,000 loan over three years. Don’t discount them just because you’re not familiar with the names – the peer-to-peer market has quickly established itself as a credible alternative to the big banks and the low-interest rates are much better than you’ll find on the high street. Another option to consider is the Low Rate credit card from MBNA. Although this isn’t strictly a personal loan, there’s nothing to stop you using this card in the

A Taste Of Harleston

n Saturday 3 October the pretty town of Harleston will be brimming with food-related activities and entertainment as part of A Taste of Harleston, a new flagship event for the Waveney Valley Food & Drink Festival 2015. A Country Kitchen Street Market (9.30am to 4pm) will see the Market Place and Exchange Street closed to traffic, with stalls selling a great array of locallymade food and artisan products. Fresh herbs and garden produce, cakes, pies and pastries, pickles, jams and preserves, cookery books, new and antique kitchen equipment, kitchenalia and farmhouse furniture are just some of the delights on offer. The theme ingredient of the day is delicious locally-reared pork, and throughout town there will be street food stalls selling sizzling sausages,

Anyone who loves delicious food will be able to follow a Food Safari around some 20 food shops, cafes, tea shops, pubs and restaurants in the town, to collect stickers and enjoy samples and special offers, before having lunch or tea at one of the establishments.

Meanwhile, at The Swan Hotel, the historic coaching inn in the centre of town, there will be a programme of cookery demonstrations by local chefs featuring pork recipes and a guest of honour will judge pork dishes made by students from Archbishop Sancroft High School. The venue will also host Ready Steady Bake, a competition to find the best sausage rolls made by primary school children and their families. Look out for Chorizo and Cumberland – Harleston’s prize sausages – as they sashay around town to greet visitors.

Children and families can take part in fun craft activities, including making colourful vegetable jewellery and decorations, and papercraft fantasy dishes (12 noon to 3.30pm at The Swan). Look out for the winning displays in the foodie-themed shop window display competition, and for some surprising street entertainments. You can also hop onto the bright red vintage bus that will be ferrying visitors for free to the open day at Hill Farm and Shotford Hall Farm.

Village wanderings Buxton and the River Bure

The walk begins at the Buxton Station on the Bure Valley Railway. The path runs beside the railway line and crosses three bridges, before dropping down the embankment to ‘The Mermaid’. It then follows the River Bure, winding past mills, locks and ponds. Across the river there are views of grand houses as well as cottage back gardens. Finally the route passes Buxton Mill back to the start point. Distance: approximately 5.4 miles. Using OS Explorer Maps OL40 and 238. Start grid ref: TG 232 229. Postcode NR10 5ET.

3 The Domesday Book indicates that the River Bure was used to drive a water mill near this site, but since then the course of the river was altered to create greater power for the present Burgh Mill. The mill has featured in many films and was still in use in 1977.

The banded demoiselle flits like an iridescent fairy along the fringes of clean, slow-moving rivers and streams. 4 At one time the mills would have ground corn from Russia and America and the yellow ‘monkey flower’ that grows on some of the banks is thought to have originated from seeds mixed in with barley from Russia.

5 Oxnead Hall was the principal residence of the Paston family from 1597–1732. It had 79 rooms at the time but was described as ‘ruinous’ by 1744. It was more recently re-designed and rebuilt and is now a venue for weddings and events.

We walked in mid-August and were surprised and delighted to find an abundance of wild flower species alongside the railway path. The ‘icing on the walk’ was a brilliant view of a Kingfisher in the sunlight, just prior to Buxton Mill.
