‘Acid damage’ or ‘acid erosion’ – the gradual dissolving of the tooth enamel (Enamel is the hard, protective coating of the tooth, which protects the sensitive dentine underneath)

What causes the damage?

• Carbonated drinks. All soft drinks (even dietary varieties) contain a lot of acid and can dissolve enamel on your teeth especially if you hold the drink in your mouth until the bubbles disappear! • Fruit juice and wine. Juice and wine have similar effects on your teeth because of the acid. • Fruit, pickles, yogurt and honey. These foods are acidic; don’t let them linger in your mouth. Swallow them as soon as you’ve chewed them enough.

How w ill I know if my teeth are damaged?

Thinning and chipping of the tips of the front teeth. (However, significant damage has already taken place!) You may experience pain and sensitivity when eating hot, cold or sweet foods and drinks. Teeth may become darker (this is due to the enamel showing darker dentine through and teeth appear darker faster).

How can I reduce/avoid acid damage? • Keep fizzy drinks as a treat and not an everyday event. • Rinse the mouth with water after a fizzy drink. • Do NOT use a toothbrush immediately this brushes off the surface of the weakened enamel. • Wait for at least half an hour before cleaning teeth and the enamel will have slightly hardened off. • Clean your teeth before breakfast. • Always use a fluoride toothpaste. • Finish your meal with a glass of milk or a piece of cheese to cancel out the acid.

What shall I do if I am concerned? If after reading this article you have any questions or cause for concern you should consult your dentist as soon as possible.

Remember: It is easier to prevent acid damage than it is to repair it. Try this at home: Place a brown coin in a fizzy drink – particularly cola – watch how effective the acid is in stripping the surface off the coin. The same happens in the mouth!

The revamp to boost community facilities at St. Peter’s Church, Swainsthorpe, is almost complete following the opening of a new, locallyfunded pathway. The pathway provides safe access to the new church facilities, which have been part of a major fundraising project by the people of Swainsthorpe over the last five years – in particular for

Sticky Greek walnut cake with cinnamon syrup The Gamekeeper, Old Buckenham, is a family-run pub located on East Anglia’s largest village green. Here’s a recipe especially for sweet-toothed Village People readers from the head chef, Matthew Derges.

Ingredients:

Cake ingredients:

Whisk egg yolks, vanilla and 120g of sugar until pale and stiff

in another bowl, whisk egg whites until peaking and stir in remaining 200g of sugar

fold the two egg mixes together

in another bowl, mix flour, baking powder, salt and nuts, and when done fold everything together so far

line a 20cm spring form cheesecake tin with baking parchment, pour in mix and bake at 180°c for 40 to 45 minutes

for the syrup, place all ingredients in a pan and simmer for 10 minutes

When cake has cooled, poke a lot of holes in top and pour over half of the syrup and serve with the remaining syrup

One of the must-see stars of Strictly Come Dancing, Siberian beauty Kristina Rihanoff is set to bring her dancefloor prowess to Norwich as a hit 2014 show gets a new look 12 months on.

uttin’ On The Ritz wowed Norwich Theatre Royal audiences during its last visit with a mix of showbiz style and panache, celebrating the golden era of movie musicals. Now the show is getting a revamp and reboot ahead of a summer return to the city on July 21 to 25. The show’s return brings with it a popular duo – well known to fans of Saturday night TV – Strictly Come Dancing’s Kristina Rihanoff and Robin Windsor. “It features some great music which is fantastic to dance to,” said Kristina, who cannot wait to be a part of the production. “It is a show that Robin and I are looking forward to. There is a lot of style in the show and it will be great to perform in.” Kristina grew up in Siberia in a musical household and her passion for Latin dance was stirred when she began studying at dance school. Following a string of championships, Kristina started teaching at the tender age of 16, yet still went on to gain a Master’s degree in

Tourism and Hospitality alongside her busy dance schedule. In 2001, she moved to Washington, uSA, where she turned professional and competed all over the world, from the traditional ornate setting of Blackpool Tower, through to the highly-competitive South African Championships. Kristina’s joined the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing in 2008, and has since been paired up with political journalist and TV presenter John Sergeant, rap personality DJ Goldie, Coronation Street star Jimi Mistry and actor Colin Salmon. The show has become a huge part of her life, but she still finds time to work on various other projects. How does she do it? “Dancing is all part of my lifestyle and I am also very lucky because I really love what I do,” Kristina explains. “If it was just a job, you would get to five o’clock and not care but I really enjoy doing what I do, working on these projects, dancing, and I also do some work talking to people about their diet. It is fantastic.” And, one of the great joys of Puttin’ On The Ritz for Kristina will be working with her Strictly co-star, Robin, once again. “We have been dancing together now for about five years.

Starting to work with him was one of the best things that ever happened to me. We never argue and we really bring out the best in each other. When we get together, we really want to push the envelope and do the best that we can.”

Diss Carnival 2015

Taking place on Sunday 14 June, Diss Carnival will present a street procession through the town and will host a Fun Day at Diss Town Football Club.

ntertainment on the day will begin with a display of Zumba dancing in the market place, which commences at approximately 12 noon, followed by the procession, which leaves Roydon Road at 1pm and makes its way through the town centre, finishing on Shelfanger Road at about 2pm. The procession theme is “Pot Luck” – giving participants the freedom to choose their own theme. The floats and walking groups are sure to be colourful, spontaneous and certainly not something to be missed! The Fun Day starts, as usual, at Diss Town Football Club in Brewers Green Lane at 2pm. New attractions for this year’s event will include children’s entertainer Adam Strange, a bouncy castle and spider-web mountain, and a Spitfire fly-past. Combat Paintball, Park Radio and the ever-popular Bazza

Bizarre are all coming to the event once again and there will even be a guest appearance from Dinsdale the Duck – Diss Carnival’s much-loved mascot. esperate lives destroyed by disease, poverty and prejudice are being transformed as people work together to end leprosy. That’s the message highlighted by Mike Griffin from Thetford as he rallies support for leprosy. “We aim to stop leprosy destroying lives and cure patients,” says Mike who works for the Leprosy Mission. With a heart for broken, suffering outcasts, the regional manager for SE England, Wales and the Channel Islands is a continual driving force for change, acceptance and support. His job takes him to the front-line of suffering where sacrificial love brings healing and revolution to some of the poorest, marginalised people across the globe. He has visited India and Bangladesh and returned from his second trip to Nepal last November with wife and long-standing volunteer, Linda. The Leprosy Mission provides health care and training at hospitals and satellite clinics and is dedicated to reversing the hatred and anger that breeds stigma. “The darkest places of suffering are alive with God’s presence. They are unique, special places and the tangible sense of God at the leprosy hospital is very healing for the patients, whatever their faith,” says Mike who has worked for the Mission for 11 years after leaving church ministry. “The disease can be cured within six months with multi-drug therapy but tragically we also see those who are thrown out by their families – they may lose their homes, jobs and access to their children and be denied health care. e.” In Nepal self-help groups help beat the challenges of the marginalised and those affected by general disability. Struggling widows and those disabled by leprosy and general disability receive support and grants to rebuild their lives with new skills and jobs so they cease to be a burden on the community.

“The groups bring dignity and empowerment which is inspirational. People are given a second chance which they are quick to grab as they stand united to become farmers, shop keepers, dressmakers or other income-generating opportunities of their choice,” says Mike.

“The initiative is Fundraising Manager encouraged where there is a high level of stigma but once the groups are registered the door opens to further support that benefits the whole community which helps to reduce the stigma.” Last autumn Mike and Linda visited Nepal with a group of Leprosy Mission volunteers who, on their return, were further enabled to tell out a message of hope and on-going need to local churches after they saw the work in action.

lose your eyes and think of an english garden, go on, try it… wrong, think again… sorry, still not right! our gardens are created from a wide range of plants from around the globe so there’s not really such a thing as an ‘english garden’, the nearest to it would be a native wildflower meadow or indigenous woodland. i reckon though that the majority of you will have conjured up an image of a country ‘c ottage garden’ in mid-summer, with bees buzzing amongst a rich tapestry of flowers. at its entrance maybe a rustic arch overgrown with sweetly-scented honeysuckle or a blousy clematis, stone pathways flanked by neatly clipped box or soft drifts of lavender leading towards a doorway or an old weathered bench. Was i right? Well i’m sure you’ve got that image now! this kind of garden can contain a wide mix of plant types, utilizing evergreen and deciduous shrubs for structure, climbers on walls, fences and obelisks, and even herbs, vegetables and fruit can join the mix of carefully ordered chaos – but it’s the flowering herbaceous perennials that will have caught your mind’s eye. Whatever the site or soil type, this collection of plants has something to offer. tall and stately; hollyhocks, delphiniums and verbascum all like their heads in the sun, or for more shady areas try acanthus, thalictrum and foxgloves. low ground cover; spring-flowering aubretia, dianthus for summer colour, or the grass-like liriope muscari for autumn blooms. if your soil is wet, some really bold plants are at your disposal; the mighty gunnera manicata with its enormous leaves,

rodgersias, ligularias and telekia speciosa with tall yellow daisy flowers, and then to more diminutive choices such as astilbe chinensis, hostas (watch out for slugs!) and a whole host of primulas. generally most plants classed as herbaceous perennials die back to the ground at the end of the year, but there are some which give year-round interest; beautiful hellebores, many euphorbias, bergenias (elephant’s ears), plus heuchera and heucherella which have undergone a breeding bonanza resulting in a magnificent number of enticing names and exciting foliage colours. Perennials require little maintenance other than a good annual feed, possible staking of taller varieties, water (especially in year one), deadheading and a tidy-up in autumn (or spring, since many have attractive seed-heads). it’s also a good idea to lift, divide and replant many types every three to five years to maintain their vigour.

Horse Riding Lessons: What Can I Expect? It is estimated that there are over one million horses in the uK and 4.3 million riders, making horse riding more popular than rugby, fishing or cricket in this country both as a hobby and as a serious competitive discipline.

hen choosing a riding school there are a few important things to check. Firstly it must be licensed by the local council, which provides a yearly check on the horses, facilities and procedures to help ensure safety. Secondly, it should be approved by either the Association of British Riding Schools or the British Horse Society to ensure a good-quality establishment. Riding schools generally offer group, private and joint-private lessons of varying lengths of time. Check on numbers in group lessons; it is fun to ride with others and make new friends but ensure you have room

to work, especially as you get more experienced. Consider visiting before your first lesson to get an idea of how things run and get a feel for the yard. Prices do vary, but check what’s included, such as hats and other necessary equipment. An indoor arena is a real asset to a riding school as it allows you to ride comfortably no matter what the weather is like. It is likely you will be able to untack your horse at the end of your lesson, which is an opportunity to get handson and learn some horse care skills if you wish to do so. Many schools also offer stable management classes, where you can learn even more about horse care. Riding schools operate a rider weight-

limit depending on the horses it has to offer, so a few questions will be asked when booking your first lesson to ensure you are given a suitable horse, instruction and lesson level. As you progress, it is inevitable that you will find a favourite horse and, although it is important to try new ones, you should feel you can talk to the staff if you are not happy with a horse you are given. Riding is an age-old sport which is fun for all abilities and ages. Schools are pleased to see both regular riders and “as and when” riders, so why not visit your local riding school to see what they can offer you? Six medieval village churches in rural Norfolk are getting colourful this July

he Blossom and yarn festival will be quite unlike anything you have experienced before. teams of knitters have been busy producing thousands of small, knitted squares which are being crafted together, along with hundreds of other knitted items, to create themed scenes in wool.

each church will be immersed in its own theme – christmas, easter, wedding, christening, harvest or remembrance – and the displays will be enhanced with flowers. Visitors’senses will be aroused by a skilful blend of sights, sounds and smells.

the six churches are part of the Wayland group of Parishes and their rector is the rev. Bob nichols. the congregations of the six villages worship together every sunday, using each church building in rotation, and they are combining their fundraising efforts to put on the Blossom and yarn festival. all the villages are pretty and peaceful, and are nestled in beautiful norfolk farmland.

Wymondham Carnival 2015 After the resounding success of last year’s “Wymondham-on-sea” event, the Wymondham Business Group have been busy planning 2015’s carnival.

he event, which last time saw over 6,000 people line the streets of Wymondham, is to be held on Saturday 25 July. It promises to be an even bigger and more exciting spectacle this year, as the town gets set for all the fun and frolics of “Wymondham-on-the-farm”.

“The team have been working away behind the scenes since the day after last year’s event,” said Tony Holden, Chair of the Events Committee. “The buzz we all felt when it worked so well encouraged us to put on a bigger and better show in 2015.” Carnival day itself is just the culmination of a number of events that will be going on in the run-up to the event. Auditions for Wymondham’s Got Talent are underway, where local, budding superstars showcase their talents. The prize-fund has increased this year, from £500 for the winning act to £700! Second place will win £200 and third place will win £100. To find out when the live shows are, look at the carnival’s Facebook page – see below for full details. Mark Cole, a Wymondham High teacher who is organising the competition, said: “This year we are expecting an even greater number of entries. We want the widest possible range of talented local people to come and audition. “This process provides a platform for those people who want to break into performing at any level on stage and

Collecting antique drinking glasses

he eighteenth century saw the beginning of one of the greatest periods of British history in terms of creativity. Georgians liked to drink and to show off their wealth. Beautiful drinking glasses allowed them to do both.

Georgian glass is heavily collected â&#x20AC;&#x201C; always handmade using crude implements, and the simple elegance of the glassware has arguably not been transcended in any period since. For nearly a hundred years, English glass dominated and was in demand around the world.

The earliest drinking Th glasses made in lead crystal were the heavy balusters. and Th Thick-walled heavily-striated, hea this type of glass dominat until dominated about 1725 when the balusters became lighter, then ev eventually declined int no more than into a plain stem with a sw swelling.

Plain stem wine glasses were made throughout the eighteenth century and featured many different bowl types. Feet were folded and conical, or domed, or conical without a fold, or were thickened to make a firing foot. As with the balusters, the centre of the foot had to be raised off the table to avoid the rough pontil mark scratching the furniture on which the glass stood. Stems were made in various ways. Drawn stems are so called because they were pulled from the same piece as the bowl of the glass, and the foot was made from a separate piece of glass and fused on afterwards. Other techniques involved making the bowl, stem

and base in three separate pieces, or building the stem itself from several pieces. Around 1740, glass-makers realised that the air-bubble in baluster glass could be manipulated to form a decorative feature/twist in the stem. This was quickly followed by the introduction of Georgian baluster glass white enamel rods resulting in an opaque white enamel twist. Coloured rods were then introduced â&#x20AC;&#x201C; most commonly in reds, greens and blues. Today, brown and turquoise twist stems are considered very rare and are highly collectable. The bowls of Georgian glasses were frequently decorated with engraved images. This was achieved by using a diamond point or engraving wheel. Wine glasses were engraved with vines and grapes, cider glasses with apples and ale glasses with barley and hops. The Antiques Fair at Dunston Hall, Norwich, has several specialist glass dealers offering glass from the Georgian, Victorian and Art Deco period. Wortham goes to the Chelsea Flower Show Howard Nurseries displayed a collection of Heritage Irises at the 2015 event

n intriguing and significant display was produced for the 2015 RHS Chelsea Flower Show by Howard Nurseries, based in the village of Wortham, with help from Suffolk Plant Heritage and the former head gardener at Sissinghurst Castle, Sarah Cook. Sarah spent the last decade searching for the Irises originally cultivated by Suffolk artist Sir Cedric Morris, who ran the East Anglian Art School from his

home at Benton End. It was here that he taught students, including Lucien Freud and Maggi Hambling. The Irises Sir Cedric cultivated have a real visual clout as they were originally bred to be painted. you can see this with their strong, elegant stems and variegated petals. This provided both Morris and his students something intriguing to draw, and they were the inspiration for one of his most famous paintings, Iris Seedlings, which is on display at the Tate in London. When Sarah began her search for Morris’ Irises back in 2004, only four of his original 90 cultivars were available to buy. The Irises were found all over the world, in collections from the uSA, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. Thanks to Sarah’s work her display at Chelsea featured 25 cultivars which had not been displayed since the 1960s.

Whilst Sarah was busy collecting the Irises, Howard Nurseries were busy growing them on their Suffolk farm. To try and reduce the environmental impact of horticulture, nurserymen at Howard’s grew the Irises in peat-free Melcourt potting compost. Howard’s have a long and successful history with the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, having previously won gold and silver-gilt medals at the event. They have also supplied plants to a number of medal-winning gardens, including those of designer Chris Beardshaw. the 2015 rhs chelsea Flower show was held on 19 to 23 may 2015.

Meet the author: Timothy Bentinck He’s an actor, an IT-whiz and now a children’s book author. From BBC Radio 4’s The Archers, to his book, Colin the Campervan, Timothy Bentinck has proved he has a way with words.

t’s no wonder Timothy Bentinck’s voice precedes him. He’s spent some 30 years lending his vocal cords to David Archer in the iconic radio soap opera series The Archers, all the while voicing audio books and adverts too. Bentinck’s face is also familiar to many – he’s been acting since his twenties, appearing both on screen and on stage. With computer-programming and home-renovation skills also under his belt, the multifaceted creative is now turning his career in an even more colourful direction. He’s written a children’s book called Colin the Campervan. “It came as a complete accident actually,” said Timothy. “I wrote it not as a book, but as a story for my children. “When they were young we had a campervan which was old and didn’t have a heater. We froze to death in it and it kept breaking down. So I wrote it into a

‘supervan’as a sort of wish-fulfilment. I read the story to my boys and then it sat as a Word file on my computer for 20 years until Kindle came out. Then, because I’m a bit of a computerprogrammer, I turned it into Kindle format and uploaded it onto there, not really thinking any more of it.” But soon after that publishers were expressing interest. The storybook, illustrated by Owen Claxton, has a yesteryear charm now a rare find on the high street. “It’s the same as the storybooks from when I was younger,” he explained. “It’s timeless. There’s enough brashness and computerised stuff around, whereas this is slightly wistful. Everybody has a relationship with their car in some way – particularly back then with the older cars which often didn’t work properly. Modern cars have less character because they’re more reliable.” Bentinck is already writing the next instalment of Colin the Campervan. “I can sort of imagine writing a whole series, with Colin guesting on the next Pixar Cars film,” he said. “Then I could put my feet up and not have to work so hard!” Colin the Campervan is out now, through FBS Publishing, £5.99

“children of the labouring poor” In the fourth of her series of articles about education in our region over the centuries, Sarah Doig looks at the rapid expansion of education for the working classes in the Victorian era.

n rural areas of East anglia in the early 1800s, education for working-class children was patchy. the highlysuccessful sunday school movement offered young children the opportunity to learn basic reading and writing skills, and in some villages, charitable endowments from wealthy residents allowed the opening up of small schools. However, in 1811, the National Society was founded and started offering grants to help build more local schools – kick-starting the emergence of national schools. Local committees were set up, often headed by the rector or another influential resident, who raised money from local inhabitants and applied for grants from both the National Society and the government. Committees had to demonstrate that “this school is intended for the instruction of the children of the labouring poor”.

These rural village schools had, inevitably, to also fit in with the pattern of the agricultural year. When the harvest started, schools closed to allow children to help their parents bring in the crops and there are frequent absences recorded for boys in particular, who were helping with stone-picking, field work and gathering herbs and other useful wild flowers.

I often get worked up over small, insignificant things, when I know I shouldn’t. I don’t deal with the stresses of life very well, so how do I find ways to cope?

In our modern society, it is difficult to avoid the increased demands of a busy life. you may feel that you are going to buckle under the pressure, however if you can find a coping strategy there is no reason why this should happen.

It is important to learn some quick-fix stress-management techniques to help you get through a particularly difficult day or moment:

• Laughter - distract yourself by reading something funny,

talking to someone who is funny or sharing a joke with someone you get on with. Humour helps relieve the symptoms of stress by producing “feel-good”chemicals in the brain.

• Deep breathing - learn a few breathing techniques to help you relax. Simply counting to 10 before responding to a stressful situation is often all that is required.

• Take a walk - get away from it all and clear your head by

taking a brisk walk outside. Sometimes a change of scenery and some fresh air can help you forget the stress you’re under.

• Speak to a friend or a colleague - if you have a work problem, a colleague may be able to help you by taking responsibility for a few of the tasks you have not got round to.

• Make a cup of tea - herbal is best. Try peppermint tea to calm any digestive symptoms or chamomile tea to help you relax. Even the few minutes spent making a cup of tea can help you to take your mind off the situation.

fascinating previous life

he first time I met Lorna was at one of those award small-talk events that I normally hate, but within minutes of meeting her I knew I was going to have a good time.

“Well, she said, “I’m a lawyer now, but I used to be a pop singer.” The story came out, with Lorna laughing and slightly embarrassed. After growing up in Ipswich, she was doing her law degree, with Japanese, at the university of Westminster and used to go dancing in the evenings at various clubs. She was a good dancer – she came sixth in the World Ballroom Dancing Championships aged 16 – and was soon spotted by Marcus Thomas from the rap band, Clock. “Marcus needed some dancers for a video and he asked me and my friend if we’d come along,” she explained. “He gave us the record company details, we checked it out and it was legitimate. “Then, very soon afterwards, the lead singer quit. All she had to do was say the line ‘keep on pushing harder’ three times at the end of the song… so I said, ‘well, I can do that’ and the rest is history!”

Within weeks of Lorna joining, Clock had a number-four hit record and was appearing on Top of the Pops. At first, Lorna tried to squeeze being in the band with being a law student but it quickly proved impossible. So the university gave her five years to return to finish her final year. Her life became an unimaginable whirl of premieres, events and photoshoots. Clock toured both Europe and Japan (where Lorna’s language skills came in very useful), and they toured with STEPs, Peter Andre and Ant and Dec (who were, at that time, PJ and Duncan). By the time the band ran out of steam, five years had passed. At this point Lorna was being offered various TV presenting jobs, but her life was taking a very different turn. Her father, who still lived in Ipswich, had developed Alzheimer’s disease so she decided to return home to help with his care. “Dad always used to worry about me giving up the law to sing and, one day, I received a letter from a

lawyer at a local solicitors firm. He said that my dad had been a regular visitor to his practice – he used to just pop in and chat to him about his daughter whose dream was to become a lawyer.” With the kind lawyer’s help, Lorna began working and training on the job. After six years she became a fully-qualified legal executive and has been specialising in wills and probate since 2008. She now works at Jackamans in Diss. “The work I do now is very special because of what has happened to my dad,” she said. “I have an affinity for helping people prepare for the future, sometimes at a very sad time in their lives. Village wanderings East Ruston and Honing

This circular walk begins at East Ruston and sets out across tracks and grazing marshes. The path crosses the North Walsham & Dilham Canal at Tonnage Bridge and then follows the bank of this quiet waterway through fields and woodland. Re-crossing the canal at a disused lock, the path joins the Weavers’ Way that leads back to the starting point. Distance: approximately 3.5 miles. Using OS Explorer Map OL40. Start grid ref: TG 346272. 1 The grazing marshes on the north side of the river are full of the ‘Yellow flag’ iris. It is one of two iris species native to the UK and thrives in marshy areas. Other early spring flowers already in evidence included primroses, blackthorn and goat willow.

4 The name of the Weavers’ Way comes from the weaving industry based around North Walsham during the Middle Ages. This section of the 56-mile Way follows the track bed of the former Midland & Great Northern Railway.

Honing Common

3 3 Honing was one of six locks on the nine-mile North Walsham & Dilham Canal. This is said to be the only canal in Norfolk and was opened in 1826. It was used for transport of goods, including a weekly ‘cabbage’ wherry to Great Yarmouth! It fell into disrepair in the early 1900s. It is now managed by the North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust.

We loved the quiet ‘wildness’ of the formerly busy rail and water ways. With Spring struggling to make headway in this cold start to 2015, the wonderful icingsugar blossom sprinkled on the blackthorn was a harbinger of things to come. Tonnage Bridge 2 Every vessel using the canal had to pay a toll, collected at Tonnage Bridge. The bridge collapsed in 1980 and was rebuilt shortly afterwards to allow the crossing of farm machinery.
