Garden Jottings from Ken Moving home is regularly listed as one of the most stressful things to deal with in life, but of course it’s not just your house that you leave behind, it’s also your garden If you are selling, your garden is key to giving a positive impression, particularly the front garden as it sets the mood when prospective buyers come to view. All round should be neat and tidy with weeds relatively under control (nobody wants to be stung by nettles or strangled by bindweed whilst viewing), keep grass and hedges clipped, pathways and patios swept, remove clutter to the shed or garage, and if its rubbish get rid of it. It’ll soon look so smart you’ll want to stay put! If you have a nice garden it will sell itself, if not cheat a little bit...attractively planted baskets and pots will definitely help! Fill these with cheerful bedding such as dainty diascias, pretty petunias or traditional red geraniums which will flower all summer long. Hardy perennial choices for containers could include penstemons, campanulas, or the bold daisy blooms of rudbeckia, gaillardia or leucanthemum. For something larger try stylish shrubs such as phormium, endless summer hydrangea, nandina or many choice conifers, these all look great planted on their own or surrounded by low-growing or trailing plants to soften the edges of the pot. Position your pots of inspiration to frame doorways, surround seating areas, or as focal points to distract the eye from unsightly objects (oil tanks, compost and wheelie bins etc).

If your accommodation is temporary or rented go for a concoction of portable pots and that way your oasis can travel with you. harles Darwin spent 40 years investigating earthworms in the garden and how their burrowing helps aerate the soil. Worms have a secondary function, however, which is just as useful and often overlooked; they are able to digest organic matter fast, to create nutrient rich vermicompost (sometimes called wormcast).
Research into the use of vermi-compost has shown it to aid seed germination and root development, and more recently it has been shown to help suppress some soil-borne and foliar diseases. These benefits can be harnessed in the garden, by creating your own cheap vermi-compost. A garden wormery is a great way to create your own vermicompost and at the same time get dispose of kitchen scraps like carrot peelings, coffee grinds etc. There are two main types of wormery: an all-in-one compartment type and a multiple tray
system. Inside a wormery the worms tend to live in the top 15-20cm of the contents. Here they digest the organic matter, turning it into the nutrient rich vermicompost. To prevent the worms escaping wormeries have tight fitting lids that also have breather holes to allow air to get in. One of the most common questions Attleborough based Wormfields gets asked is “What is the difference between a wormery and a conventional composter?” The answer is that worms speed up the decomposition process dramatically, instead of the 2-6 months with a garden composter; worms can digest organic matter within weeks. Also with a wormery the worms eat the organic matter so there is no heat or smell created.

U
ntil fairly recently, tree surgery (known locally as tree falling), was a somewhat basic affair. All you needed was a good saw and strength. There was a local tree faller who used to strap a 2 man hand saw on his back and cycle to work, tie one end of the saw to a stake with a tyre inner tube and cut trees down by himself. There was no thought of safety gear, indeed my father in law thought gloves and helmets were for the weak; this goes a long way to understand why my husband is a little deaf and has some impressive scars! Chain saw trousers and boots had yet to be invented.
Typically, today’s tree surgeon will wear chainsaw trousers and boots, a high vis coat, a helmet with ear defenders and visor, a climbing harness and chainsaw gloves. His gear will contain ropes, lanyards, a cambium saver, a handsaw and a whole range of shackles, karabiners and, of course, a first aid kit.
He will carry a topping saw, these can be used one handed and are quite light and suspended at the end of a rope from his harness. He will have a range of different chain saws for different sized trees, hedge cutters, pole saws and loppers. The big machinery needed includes chippers, stump grinders, hoists and lorries. Waveney Tree Specialists have two chippers, one tracked for all terrain work; two stump grinders, one which will tackle any size stump and is also tracked; a small cherry picker; a 20m hoist for bigger trees; a 7 tonne lorry for carrying timber and two tipping trucks. Tree surgery is the second most dangerous occupation; deep sea Atlantic fishing is only just worse. This means that proper training is a must. All twelve men at Waveney Tree Specialists have been to college and gained many certificates. All the kit is checked every six months; any worn or dangerous item is destroyed and replaced.

How to become a water-wise gardener
W
ater is a precious resource locally and globally. Rainfall in Cambridge has averaged only 557 mm annually over the last 30 years and Cambridge’s climate is classified as ‘semi-arid’. With hosepipe bans in place across much of the region, it is time for us gardeners to look at how we can reduce reliance on costly mains water in our gardens. One of the most sustainable and forward-thinking moves to make is to review your plant selection.
Despite a permanent hosepipe ban in the beautiful Dry Garden here at the Botanic Garden in Cambridge, it nevertheless flourishes. This is principally down to choosing plants that can survive short-term drought and to using appropriate horticultural techniques, such as applying thick, moisture-conserving mulches and planting closely to help reduce loss of water from the soil. Of the 100 different species in the planting mix, many are Mediterranean natives such as Lavender, Thyme and Blue Spurge (Euphorbia myrsinites). Drought-tolerant characteristics to look out for in water-wise plants include small leaves that reduce water-loss, silvery, reflective foliage that minimises solar gain, or hairy leaves that trap moisture. Bulbs and annuals both demonstrate life-cycles that avoid summer drought by surviving as underground storage organs through the hot summer months, while annuals tend to grow, flower and set seed early in the year to ensure the next generation. There are also a number of British endemics like Stinking Iris (Iris foetidissima), the Sea Buckthorn (Hippophaë rhamnoides), that are included on the basis of many years observation of what grows easily here in our conditions.
A pergola forms the backdrop to the Dry Garden and is draped with drought-tolerant climbers such as Clematis armandii and Vitis purpurea that provide light shade for the table and chairs here. This affords the perfect spot from which to take notes on how to incorporate water-wise gardening into your own garden at home:
• Don’t worry if your lawn is parched and brown in the summer and resist the urge to water it from the mains supply—your lawn will recover when the rain eventually comes. • When choosing plants for a dry garden, look for grey–leaved, waxy-leaved or aromatic plants, which are indications of good adaptation to drought conditions (you can download the Dry Garden plant list from www.botanic.cam.ac.uk) • Mulch a dry garden in spring with bark chips or coco shells to conserve moisture in the ground. If you mulch with rich organic matter, the plants will put on fast, lush growth which will be more susceptible to drought damage.

Thornham Hall Goes Green
hornham Hall has been the country seat of the Barons of Hartismere and Henniker for four centuries. In that time the Hall has seen a great many changes. Part demolition, fire damage, re-building and now the installation of a Solar PV system to bring this buildings eclectic history up-to-date.
With the cost of energy bills rising all the time and fears over the impact of increasing pollution, the current owner Lady Henniker-Major wanted to secure her children’s future in the Hall. She saw Solar PV as a viable solution which would also offer her a good tax free income. “With such a significant property to protect, it was of upmost importance that I found a trustworthy local company who understood the heritage of the Hall and would give us a competitive price using high-quality products. It is also important to many of my paying guests that their break away is sustainable. So when I found Aspiration Solar, a company based in Diss, it was like a breath of fresh air. Poussin À la Provençale Cooking time: 45 minutes
INGREDIENTS • 2 poussins • 4 tomatoes • 1 green pepper • 4 cloves of garlic • 1 small bunch of basil • 50g pitted black olives • 3 tbsp olive oil • 1 bouquet garni • Salt and pepper METHOD 1. Peel the tomatoes, remove the seeds and chop. Soak the olives for 5 minutes and drain and cut the green pepper into strips. Peel and crush the cloves of garlic.
5. Wash the basil and add to the casserole dish together with the garlic, tomatoes, bouquet garni, pepper and a little salt. (Remember to keep some basil for garnish.)
2. Cut the poussins into two lengthways.
6. Finally, add the poussins, cover and leave to cook over a gentle heat for 25 minutes. Add the olives 10 minutes before the end of cooking.
3. Heat two tablespoons of oil in a casserole dish over a high heat then brown the half poussins for 5 minutes on each side. Place to one side and keep warm.
7. Serve in a dish with the sauce and sprinkle with the remaining basil.
4. Add an additional tablespoon of oil to the casserole dish and fry the peppers gently for 10 minutes.

Celebrate the summer sunshine... or lack of it! Did you know that Norfolk is one of the driest areas in the UK? It has roughly half the amount of average annual rainfall than Cornwall and considerably less than the Lake District. So, fingers crossed for a summer of BBQs, trips to the seaside, days in the garden and picnics! In case you’re stuck for ideas, here are some of our suggestions... 1. Take up skiing Crab, oysters and cockles are all coming into season now. Why not wait for a sunny spring day and take yourself off to the seaside to enjoy these delicious shellfish the way nature intended - in the fresh air! And don’t forget, that classic fish accompaniment and local delicacy, samphire, is also about to come into season. 2. Throw a Summer Solstice party Channel your inner pagan and celebrate the Summer Solstice on the 21 June. It has more hours of daylight than any other day in the year and has been celebrated in various ways for centuries by many different cultures and religions. In England, thousands of people congregate at ancient religious sites, such as Stonehenge and Avebury, to see the sunrise. You might even spot a few druids in your local woodland! 3. Go boating Of course, the most obvious place to go boating is on the famous Norfolk Broads. Why not visit the pretty village of Horning and take a trip on Mississippi paddle boat, The Southern Comfort? This beautiful, double-deck luxury cruiser was purpose built for the broads and runs regular trips along the picturesque River Bure.
4. Go to the beach The Norfolk and Suffolk beaches are a great place to visit at any time of year, but they really come into their own in summer. Whether you like bustling piers, penny machines and ice cream shacks or prefer to see nothing but sand dunes and seals, there’s a beach to suit everyone. In fact, East Anglia is one of the few counties in England where you can still find a quiet spot on the beach, even in August. 5. Follow the Olympic torch Obviously, we couldn’t let a list of summer activity suggestions pass without some mention of the Olympics. Tickets have been hard to come by but, if you’re not one of the lucky ones, you can still join in the fun by following the Olympic Torch on its journey through East Anglia. The torch relay will visit 12 locations across Norfolk over the 4 and 5 July; including, Great Yarmouth, Cromer, Lowestoft, Aylsham and Fakenham. There’s an evening event to mark the flame’s arrival in Norwich, at Chapelfield Gardens on the 4 July. The park is one of 66 locations in the UK to host the flame overnight and is celebrating with a two-and-a-half hour show, staged by London 2012. The Norfolk route forms part of the torch’s journey from Land’s End, on 19 May, to London for the start of the Games on 27 July. www.lindentreenorthgate.co.uk Conveniently located right by the station and not too far from town, you could be fooled into thinking that this is a typical town pub with no real garden as such. However, the first thing that greeted us when we sat down in the dining room was the beautiful mature gardens at the back of the pub. The garden is big enough for children to run around in and have fantastic games of hide and seek! With a seesaw and picnic benches to sit out in the sun in the summer, you could forget you are in a town! At the very back of the restaurant is a conservatory, which when we visited was decorated ready for a party and could easily seat 20-30, but usually is a great place to sit and enjoy lunch/dinner watching over the children playing outside. The Linden Tree has a very family friendly atmosphere and we even found a box full of books for the children to read on a rainy day or whilst waiting for their food to arrive. Our food was above the standard of many pubs, which I attribute to everything being made fresh in house. One of our party had the Original Linden Burger and I cannot recommend this enough! It looked amazing and by all accounts tasted it too! The freshly made onion rings were bigger than the bun!! I had one of the best Chicken Caesar Salads
With the children at school, a holiday to Wales and myself busy with work since the last edition, we have found ourselves not eating out as much as usual. However, the half term holidays gave us a perfect opportunity to try a new pub and as we were in Bury St Edmunds (at Curvemotion) we decided to try a recommendation from a friend.
I have ever had, just the right balance of dressing, chicken and lettuce. The children’s menu is equally as impressive. Priced at £4.95 for two courses, each freshly made and included scampi, macaroni cheese, sausages (quorn or pork), grilled or battered haddock, burger, spaghetti bolognaise, chicken curry and rice and crispy chicken - all served with a choice of mash potato, jacket potato, new potato, chips, and peas, salad or vegetables! I was truly blown away by the vast choice on offer and they clearly treat children as mini adults that like to have the same choices as their parents. Dessert for children was just as delicious. Warm chocolate fudge brownies or ice cream, of which both were at hit with the children. It really was great value for money. Daily specials are also on offer, with such dishes as fresh salmon or seabass to tempt us. The main menu also included some great classics including, fish pie, chilli, battered haddock and gammon to name a few, all cooked to perfection and presented very well. When it came to dessert, it was great to see some old classics also peppered with some new and exciting sounding puddings i.e. Salted Caramel Torte, Expresso and Ameretto Cup, and Lemon Lush. We found this pub to be very reasonably priced for the quality of the food produced, in a wonderful tranquil environment that will have you believing you are in a country pub in the middle of nowhere!

lmost a year ago I went to lunch with my ‘twin’; we are not related but share the same birthday. We agreed to go again on our actual birthday, which occurs in February, but the weather at the time wasn’t very good so we postponed it until the spring with the belief that it would be ‘lovely’. Pouring rain and a stiff breeze greeted us as we arrived at the pub we had selected, and after struggling with the wheelchair in and out of doorways we discovered that this was the only day that they were not doing food. Why do I never learn to phone and check?
So we repeated the huffing and puffing through the doorway of the Crown at Burston, and with a little help from a nice man-and-his-dog Nero, we settled at a table near the open log fire, steaming quietly whilst studying the menu. Determined to get away from my usual choices, I opted for a vegetarian pancake stuffed with spinach and cream cheese, accompanied by a salad. As it was rotten weather I ordered a side dish of chips – no real logic there but I don’t really need an excuse. My twin chose shepherd’s pie with vegetables, and agreed to help me out with the chips. A bubbly young woman greeted us warmly, made my friend comfortable and took the order. The whole place had a young-ish cheery feeling, and the nice man-and-his-dog chatted to us whilst we waited for the food; we discovered that the village of Burston is famous for the school strike of 1914–1939, the longest strike in English history.
Bottom line
Once the food arrived, I began to regret the extra chips as the pancake was satisfyingly big, but the chips were big, crisp, and homemade so I courageously battled on. The shepherd’s pie came with a dear little jug of extra gravy and freshly cooked carrots, cauliflower and beans.

The pie was in a separate dish and my friend decided to decant it to make eating easier; I did likewise with my pancake, which was truly delicious - I simply didn’t want it to end! There was a substantial amount of spinach (unlike one occasion when my ‘wilted spinach’ turned out to be just three leaves looking like a collapsed balloon on top of whatever it was I was eating) and lots of lovely melted cheese on the top. My friend’s pie was stuffed with meat, and he loved the extra gravy and the gently cooked veg. Excellent! I do like a large pudding, and I wavered between sticky toffee pudding and lemon tart. Eventually I opted for the tart so as not to repeat what I have written about before. It was elegant, sharp/sweet, and accompanied by crème fraiche and a cape gooseberry, but just a bit too small for me. My friend had a rhubarb fool which was much more substantial, so I helped him to finish it. There is something about the word ‘rhubarb’ that makes me think utilitarian, dutiful, and economical; I always forget just how temptingly sweet and succulent it can be especially when smothered in cream*. The pub is clean and bright and there is a wide choice of food from sandwiches and snacks to full meals. I would love to go again; for the atmosphere, the lightheartedness and the roaring log fire, and for another go at that pancake. * P.S. I remembered that I had some rhubarb growing at my allotment, so we deviated on the way home to go and pick some – in my BEST NEW SHOES! A crumble for my friend, and a pie for me – tomorrow!

he beloved British musical Oliver! is coming to Norwich Theatre Royal this summer, in what promises to be one of the theatrical events of the year! With a cast and crew of 108, Oliver! features a host of talented West End performers. Headed by the legendary theatrical impresario Cameron Mackintosh, this show brings to life the timeless characters in the story of the boy who asked for more. One of Britain’s best-loved entertainers Brian Conley is taking on the role of Fagin. A few weeks before he takes over the part from previous on-stage Fagin Neil Morrissey, he admits he can’t wait to get started. He said: “I have always wanted to play Fagin. It is a loaded part in one of the greatest ever British musicals. It is written by Lionel Bart who is truly a legend although I know Charles Dickens had something to do with the story!” Ever the joker, Brian’s natural sense of humour stood him in good stead learning the craft of show business. He started his TV career as a warmup man for the likes of Terry Wogan and Noel Edmonds and since then has enjoyed a varied career doing everything from starring in the sitcom The Grimleys to appearing in several films.
Most recently, Brian has also become a renowned stage star, winning an Olivier Award for his West End role in Jolson at the Victoria Palace, and is now following in the footsteps of a host of top stars that have taken on the part of Fagin onstage. Brian recalled: “Of course, Ron Moody played the part in the film. Initially the producers didn’t want him even though he was Fagin in the West End because they didn’t think he was famous enough…they tried for Dick Van Dyke. Can you imagine him playing the part? Eventually they went with Ron Moody and thank goodness they did. Every Fagin stems from that.”
This touring production - which has already wowed audiences in Cardiff, Manchester and Birmingham – has a long-running link with theatrical impresario Cameron Mackintosh. Cameron first fell in love with the show while working as a stagehand in Camelot at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, in London’s West End. He recalled: “I desperately wanted the job of assistant stage manager and managed to persuade the show’s formidable general manager, Ann Jenkins, to take me on after subjecting her to a three hour interview rant in which I precociously told her I intended to become a producer by the time I was 25. I actually managed it five years earlier.” As assistant stage manager, he was expected to sing and dance in the chorus as well as move props. Cameron recalled: “I was slightly less tone deaf than the other ASM’s so
I got the job and, to my delight, had the undeserved thrill of being in a huge, popular musical bringing down the house while knowing I had absolutely no acting talent at all.“ This was the start of Cameron’s longterm association with Oliver! which saw him meet the show’s creator Lionel Bart, when he took him to meet the cast on opening night at the Manchester Opera House in November 1965. Cameron believes the show’s versatility is a reason for its continued success: “Unlike most musicals, Oliver! works as well in a school hall as the vast reaches of Drury Lane. The magic of the show is the combination of Dickens’s timeless story and unforgettable characters coupled with Lionel’s brilliant adaptation…” He promises audiences are in for something very special if they head to Norwich Theatre Royal to see the show between July 3 and August 4. “If you have never seen Oliver! before, I am sure you will instantly consider yourself one of the family and succumb to its magic… I hope this new production will inspire many new generations to come to the theatre – as it did me.”

The Great UK A
lthough only the 79th largest county on the planet – tipping the scales at a ‘mere’ 94,500 square miles in area – the UK packs an incredible amount into its limited space. Fascinating cities that radiate culture and history exist sit beside delightful chocolate-box villages; and snow-dusted mountains rear up above grassy lowlands, but can be reached within hours. Perhaps the most obvious example of ‘The Great UK’ is its twisting shoreline. At 7723 miles, there is a lot of it (more than can be boasted by Spain, Italy or

The Cotswolds Just 60 miles west of London lies the Cotswolds. Deemed ‘an area of outstanding natural beauty’, its landscape is shaped by honey-stone villages and unspoilt scenery, a place that William Morris called “an earthly paradise.” Here, the softly undulating hillsides play second fiddle as the backdrop to the prettiest towns and villages in England. The Cotswolds also boasts one of England’s most magnificent stately homes – Blenheim Palace, the ancestral seat of the Duke of Marlborough and birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill.
Edinburgh Few cities are as visibly tied to their past as the Scottish capital. From the ramparts of the castle on its lofty crag (and the Royal Mile rising to meet it) to the 18th century sophistication of the Georgian New Town, a stay in Edinburgh is a history lesson – but, with restaurants and shops aplenty, never a dull one. A special event which is not to be missed is the magnificent Royal Edinburgh Tattoo. Set to the amazing backdrop of Edinburgh Castle, there is fantastic music from the popular Massed Pipes & Drums as well as marvellous displays from the Massed Military bands.
Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coast Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coast has a breathtaking and rugged coastline which merges into the romantic landscape of its deep silent glens and lush forest parks. The region has been made famous by the Causeway Coastal Route which is seen as ‘One of the World’s Great Road Journeys’. A spectacular stopping point is the UNESCO World Heritage Site - The Giants Causeway. Created, according to legend, by a giant who wished to walk over the sea to Scotland (but in reality by volcanic eruption), the Giant’s Causeway sits on the northeast coast of Northern Ireland. It’s astonishing mesh of 40,000 interlocking basalt columns look like a colossal set of stepping stones. This spectacular tourist attraction is an amazing once in a lifetime sight which cannot be missed!

Snowdonia Snowdonia, known in Welsh as Eryri (the land of the eagles), is a land of high peaks, steep, plunging valleys and open moorland, and is bounded on the west by the Lleyn Peninsula and the Cardigan Coast. Here the rocky mountains, glacial lakes, stunning waterfalls and rugged wilderness all compete for attention. No visit to Snowdonia is complete, however, without a visit to the famous Mountain Railway. This iconic attraction is a service that, for over a century, has made the steep 4.7-mile journey to the top of Snowdon easy. The country’s highest mountain (which rears to 3560ft), views from Snowdon’s summit are spectacular – and well worth the trip.
England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Island each of course have their own national flavour and distinct personality, and have an abundance of attractions for even the most discerning traveller. So, with the increased popularity of the so called ‘staycation’, why not take time to enjoy the many facets of these island jewels.

he 17th annual Wymondham Music Festival is centred on Festival Fortnight, June 23 to July 8, but features concerts until October. In total, more than 90 events celebrate a range of different musical styles, including Americana, classical, folk, world, jazz, swing, disco, funk, soul and early music. Hosted in a range of venues across Wymondham, highlights include O Duo’s percussion extravaganza, the award-winning Demon Barber Roadshow’s high-energy mix of music and dance, jazz pianist Craig Milverton and the Cuban style of Cuarteto Guarachando.

Village wanderings
5 Long’s Wood was created in 1994 by Dennis Long, a far-sighted farmer who turned 40 acres of arable fields into woodland. More recently extended by another 20 acres, this woodland is now enjoyed by many and provides a varied wildlife habitat. These frogs are depicted on one of 20 relief bosses forming a sculpture trail through the Wood.
Ashwellthorpe and Wreningham This circular walk starts at Wreningham village and continues across fields and paddocks to Ashwellthorpe. Turning off the main street, the path skirts the ancient woodland of Lower Wood, managed by the NWT. A short distance across fields, and in complete contrast, is Long’s Wood – a relatively new wood, planted from 1994. The comma butterfly (left) is so named because of the white mark on the underside of its wing.

4 Lower Wood, Ashwellthorpe, is a 90-acre ancient wood managed by the NWT. It is coppiced by volunteers and consequently the wood is rich in wildlife and flora: in spring it is carpeted with bluebells, ramsons (wild garlic) and wood anemones.

Rooks were busy at their nests by the church and, on a detour into Ashwellthorpe Wood, many birds were vocal; common buzzard and nuthatch being two of the most persistent. Ramsons were just beginning to flower. A sense of expectation pervaded the countryside.

We check out the best of the new releases Moonrise Kingdom In the latest offering from Wes Anderson, director of The Fantastic Mr Fox, we head back to the 1960s, following two pre-teen lovers who flee from their town and spark a huge game of hide and seek with a disproportionately scaled search party. Moonrise Kingdom is refreshingly different to the glut of summer blockbusters- expect to be impressed by the gorgeous 1960’s setting, which features some great retro-styling and an eclectic soundtrack. The cast is probably Anderson’s heaviest-hitting to date, including Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton, Edward Norton, Bill Murray and Frances McDormand.
Men in Black 3 A decade has passed since the release of ‘Men in Black 2’, the fun but slightly underwhelming sequel to the brilliant original, released in 1997. This film sees Barry Sonnenfeld returning as director with the original cast and original writer, resulting in high hopes for this sequel. We expect space age gadgetry and action galore as Agent J (Will Smith) sets out to save the life of his partner, Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) encountering all manner of alien beasties along the way. The old classic also sees some new faces, with Josh Brolin starring as Young Agent K, Alice Eve as Young Agent Oh and Emma Thompson as Agent Oh.

Goodbye First Love French director Mia Hansen-Love tells the story of Camille, (Lola Créton) and her inability to shake the memory of her first love, Sullivan. We see Camille develop from young, precocious lover to a twenty-something architect, attempting to mature. The traditional coming-of-age format is somewhat mellowed in Love’s narrative, which avoids the conventional peaks and troughs of emotion in a more realist, laid back style, which can be a challenge to viewers. This film moves from the intensity of first love to absence and attempts to mature- as much about the teenager we carry with us as the adult we become when we shed our childish ways.

Burn Fat with HIIT
H
IIT (high intensity interval training) is more popular than ever and for good reason, IT WORKS! There is a good chance you have read a little about the subject before but if you have not, HIIT is a short intense burst of exercise followed by periods of rest and then repeated.
So many people think HIIT is just running (run 1 minute/ walk 1 minute). Although that is a great way to workout it is not the only way to apply HIIT. To stray from boredom we need variety and with HIIT there are endless different ways to exercise. In addition to the more obvious cardio options such as cycling, rowing, steppers and cross trainers etc which you can perform HIIT on, there are forms of circuit training which will give you the same effect when performed correctly. For example you could do 8 exercises such as squats, step ups, running on the spot, mountain climbers etc for 40 seconds each with 20 seconds rest between exercises. Perform all 8 exercises then rest 1 minute and repeat the circuit another 2 times.

When doing exercises with HIIT, you need to focus on what you are doing and train to your maximum effort. It does not last long and you can soon take a break. This type of training is hard work but that is the beauty of exercise you really do get out what you put in. The best part of HIIT is that it does not take long to complete to achieve results. HIIT is about training harder and smarter not longer, so the ‘I don’t have time to workout’ excuse is not going to work, sorry folks! Life and death - The hand of God escribed as a ‘living miracle’, Bob Morrish believes he was saved from death to play a part in the miracles he sees in others during his Norfolk prison visits.

no-one there. It was absolutely amazing; physically I had God’s hand on my back where the disc was out and it has never slipped out again since,” said Bob, who is a member of a South Norfolk church.
The sports car Bob was driving was a mangled wreck when police covered his body with a sheet, presuming he was dead. But Bob still had a pulse despite the terrible injuries that included umpteen broken bones, a ruptured spleen, damaged internal organs and facial injuries requiring 54 stitches.
Bob now shares his amazing testimony and life-changing experiences with male prison offenders and is seeing their lives transformed. “I have the proof of healing, joy and blessing in my life and I want to encourage others,” explained Bob, who became a member of Prison Fellowship – a volunteer organisation across 112 countries.
He underwent hospital surgery after an ambulance team passed the accident scene by chance and discovered he was still conscious after a horrific head-on collision with a lorry.
“I started to go into prison on a Wednesday evening. I soon realised that God has given me a one-to-one ministry for encouraging offenders. As I have got close to many of them I have seen God change them over time.”
“Surgeons believed my injuries were too severe for me to survive the night,” said Bob, who astounded nurses by leaving his hospital bed and walking unaided within weeks.
Bob has helped numerous offenders change their lives: “I recall one guy - an ex-Hell’s Angel. It took 26 armed police men to arrest him but he found Jesus in prison and the change was amazing. I kept in touch with him following the end of his sentence and remember his wife saying she had a new husband who became drug and alcohol free who helped with the housework; sometimes cooked the meals and even began attending church!”
The accident three decades ago did not take Bob’s life but it did rob him of his joy, causing severe depression. He suffered a slipped disc after his original injuries, which caused him to spend five days a week at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, over a course of ten months. Having reached rock bottom, Bob responded to a church invitation by his eldest daughter. He received prayer and gave the reins of his life to Jesus Christ: “Until then I thought religion was reserved for children and old people but within a few days I was singing with a new joy and my life started to get interesting.” Two years later Bob suffered a second slipped disc, but within a fortnight he was invited to a church healing service. He struggled to get out of his car to walk through the church door 28 years ago yet experienced a miracle at the service: “Two men stood either side and prayed for me with a hand on my shoulders and my head. Afterwards, I turned round to thank the person behind me since I felt a hand on my back with much warmth but there was

If the private school you are considering is selective, your child may have to sit an entrance exam and the school may want to interview prospective pupils (occasionally with their parents). Generally, independent senior schools are very positive towards ex-state school pupils, welcoming the breadth and diversity of their primary education.
It used to be thought that only rich and privatelyeducated people sent their children to private schools. This is certainly not true now, as more than half the children entering private education have parents who were educated in the state system and come from every sort of background. OPPORTUNITIES FROM YOUR INVESTMENTS
Income is important, even more so in today’s difficult economic climate. The difficulty is, that in an uncertain world, investment income is hard to find right now. It is harder to profit from investments
Investors looking for income have faced great challenges since the beginnings of financial downturn in 2008. Dividends came under pressure, Bond markets were unnerved and commercial property fell from grace. In short, there are currently few places for income-seekers to turn. Central Governments worldwide have tightened their purse strings, forcing interest rates to record lows. Consequently, investors wanting to secure an income stream have realised that they must accept some risk by looking beyond traditional cash deposits.
Shares are a safer bet
History shows that investing in equities, or shares, has provided investors with a better chance of outpacing inflation over the long term versus other asset classes, particularly if the companies are able to increase the dividend payments year after year. The latest data from Capita Registrars Dividend Monitor, July 2011, shows that a total of 247 companies paid a dividend in the second quarter of 2011, compared to 221 in the same period of 2010. Of these, 210 companies increased, reinstated or started paying dividends. The increases and reinstatements outnumber the cuts and cancellations by 6.5:1. With dividend payouts on the turn, the outlook for equity income funds could also be on the up. Equity income funds have a strong track record for delivering attractive, sustainable income and steady returns over the long term, but inevitably were impacted by the crisis of recent times. Many equity income funds were heavily exposed to the big banks, but the banks’ obligations to rebuild their balance sheets meant their dividend distributions were reduced. Payouts are still lower than they used to be; UK listed banks account for just 10% of all dividends paid by FTSE100 companies in 2010 compared to 30% in 2007.
Choose what sort of income you need
It is worth remembering that not all equity income funds are the same. Some are better for income, while others provide better prospects for total return investors through the reinvestment of income. Make sure you research and understand the individual fund fully. There has been a new increase in the demand for overseas equity income

funds, following improvements in the dividend yield of companies across Continental Europe and Asia-Pacific, as they have moved to accommodate the demands of a global shareholder base. Corporate bond funds, income producers by nature, remain popular, particularly with cautious investors. However, choosing which bond fund to invest in is less clear-cut. Investment grade corporate bonds suffer at times of inflation (as the fixed interest rate means that the real value of the income is eroded over time), while noninvestment-grade bonds, which pay a higher yield, tend to struggle during a recession (as more companies default). As applies with all asset types, a diversified fixed interest strategy will ensure that investors capture the potential of the wider corporate bond market. Commercial property is also beginning to regain attention after it felt the full effects of the credit crunch - the fall in property values left investors nursing significant losses. History suggests, however, that commercial property will keep its place in a portfolio for income investors. Its long-term track record is strong and it offers important diversification from shares.
Exercise Caution
Commercial property, like other investments, is not without its risks. Property prices rose by 14.5% over 2010, but most of those gains were made in the first half of the year. If the UK economy does fall back into recession, the property sector could come under pressure again. Those investing for income need to remember that no one asset class is the panacea. With interest rates likely to remain low for some time to come, a well diversified, well-managed portfolio which blends different forms of investment remains the most suitable strategy for investors taking a longer-term view of their income needs.

At first glance, it doesn’t appear fast, but it is; it doesn’t give the impression of being comfortable, but it is. Do you see where I’m going here? It is fun to drive – mainly because it zips away from a standing start easily, albeit in a highly-strung manner. On the other hand, I don’t like the lack of load space because, as a dad of two, I need a boot which is bigger than the Juke’s. That said, if you’re going away on holiday or business, it is adequate for your flight case and your partner’s travel case. The Juke on test here, in flagship ‘Tekna’ trim, has enough room for four and, with its 1.6 turbo and 188 horses under the bonnet, it’ll undoubtedly set all occupants’ pulses racing. With a 0-62mph sprint of 8.0seconds and a top speed of 134mph you can feel that Nissan meant this car to have a sporting, ‘hot-hatch’ character.
Vauxhall Astra GTC 1.4 Turbo The new Astra GTC lays down the gauntlet to VW’s Scirocco and Renault’s Megane Coupe with a heady mix of dynamic excellence, dramatic design features and competitive pricing. The car looks like it’s been yanked from the class above, with its low, wide stance and simple, yet rakish lines. In fact the only elements the GTC shares with its siblings are the door handles and the roof aerial – even the wheelbase and tracks are different. Norfolk and Suffolk Borders In the last issue of ‘Village People’, I wrote about Thelnetham Vineyard. Thelnetham is described in Wikipedia as ‘a village and civil parish in the St Edmundsbury district of Suffolk’ Located on the southern bank of the River Little Ouse (the Norfolk-Suffolk border), it lies six miles west of Diss. But the website for East Anglian Vineyards lists Thelnetham Vineyard as located in Norfolk – and the address as Lodge Farm, Thelnetham, Diss, Norfolk, IP22 1JL. It seems that many people were incensed at the possible mis-location of the vineyard that they felt obliged to write in to the editor. Why? Well, firstly, it seems that the border between Norfolk and Suffolk is quite a controversial matter. It is defined by its relation to the Little Ouse which, for much of its length marks the boundary between Norfolk and Suffolk. This river rises east of Thelnetham, very close to the source of the River Waveney, and flows westwards, while the Waveney flows eastwards to define the Norfolk-Suffolk border further east. But why on earth is Thelnetham listed on the website as a Norfolk vineyard, with a postal address that links it to Diss in Norfolk, but yet has an Ipswich postal code and is, apparently in Suffolk? I wonder partly because Brockdish, where I live, lies north of the Waveney River and is surely in Norfolk; yet it too has an Ipswich postal code, IP21 4LA. Disturbingly, however, according to some maps Brockdish lies south of the Waveney River and is clearly shown as being in Suffolk. The second map on the same website, fails to show Brockdish at all, although the Street, which runs through the village, is marked clearly as north of the Waveney River, and thus in Norfolk. The matter of borders is important, in large part because of the long history of difference and division between those north of the border (whatever and wherever it may be) - the ‘North Folk’ - and those south of the border - the ‘South Folk’.
The North Folk and the South Folk The two terms supposedly derive from the ‘Old English’ north folc and south folc, meaning the (land of ) the ‘north’ people and the ‘south’ people respectively; and certainly ‘Nordfolc’ is identified clearly as a distinctive region of East Anglia in the Domesday Book of 1086.

Today, the language most widely spoken across the British Isles is English, and a large part of the main island is called England; this is the result of the linguistic (and probably political) influence of the Angles, people who colonised the east of Britain and came originally from a region on the continent still called Angeln. It is not certain when the Kingdom of the Angles – the region colonised in the 5th century AD by people from Angeln – was first divided into two parts. According to some sources, Norfolk was the northern half of the Kingdom of East Anglia ruled by the AngloSaxon Wuffing dynasty. But even if the division existed already, at the time of the Angles, it was further deepened in the 9th century AD, when the northern part was subject to influences from across the sea to the north, while the southern part – known to the Romans as ‘the Saxon shore’, was subject to influences from across the sea to the east. In his excellent study of The Origins of the British (2006) Stephen Oppenheimer considers the archaeological, linguistic and genetic legacies of the two East Anglian regions. He suggests that ‘the cultural centre of gravity of early East Anglians’ was not so much Denmark and Angeln but further ‘northwards across the water to Norway and Sweden’. He also remarks that ‘other cultural links, including ceramics, ornaments and the practice of horse cremation, seem to link Norfolk and the areas of the earliest English rune finds with Schleswig-Holstein and the neck of the Cimbrian Peninsula’, while genetic studies suggest affinities between Norfolk and York (and the areas in between), and north Germany, Denmark and Norway. Certainly, later, in the latter part of the 9th century AD, Danish Vikings left their gene markers along the eastern coastal regions from York south to the Wash, with a striking cluster at Fakenham in northwest Norfolk. They are, by contrast, nearly absent from those parts of East Anglia and Essex previously identified by the Romans as ‘the Saxon shore’ (Essex, Sussex and Wessex). So the division between ‘north folk’ and ‘south folk’ has historical depth – at least some 1,200 years and possibly more – with the former associated with influences and peoples from the north, in Denmark and Scandinavia, and the

latter with influences and peoples from the east, in Saxony (and Germany more generally).
But what language did the people of East Anglia speak?
Linguistic similarities - and differences Both Norfolk and Suffolk and their inhabitants are today notable for their distinctive dialects, and are the butt of many jokes by ‘outsiders’. Folk from Suffolk often maintain that they cannot understand the ‘yokels’ (or ‘carrot crunchers’) from Norfolk (also a derogatory term used by West Midlanders for East Midlanders) though the folk from Norfolk in turn laugh at the ‘tractor boys’ from the south – a jibe turned proudly by some into an epithet for Ipswich Town Football Club. The Norfolk dialect, also known as Broad Norfolk, is a subset of the Southern English dialect group. It employs distinctively unique pronunciations, especially of vowels; and consistent grammatical forms that differ markedly from ‘standard’ English. Geographically it covers most of the County of Norfolk extending south into the northern parts of the county of Suffolk, in particular the town of Lowestoft and its surrounding area. Dickens shows some grasp of the Norfolk accent in his treatment of the speech of Ham and Daniel Peggoty from Yarmouth, in David Copperfield. Arnold Wesker’s 1959 play Roots also made good use of authentic Norfolk dialect; and, during the 1960s, Anglia TV produced a soap opera (“Weavers Green”) which used local characters making extensive use of Norfolk dialect, and was filmed at Heydon, north of Reepham, in mid-Norfolk. The publication of The Seventeenth Child (2006) by Ethel George (with Carole and Michael Blackwell) provides a written record of spoken dialect, though in this case of a person brought up inside the city of Norwich. The accent of Norwich is similar to that of the rural areas, but the vowels tend to be different. An erudite and comprehensive study of The Norfolk Dialect was made by Norfolk speaker and Professor of Sociolinguistics, Peter Trudgill and can be found in his book The Norfolk Dialect (2003), published as part of the ‘Norfolk Origins’ series by Poppyland Publishing, Cromer. The Norfolk dialect is undoubtedly distinctive. But it could be argued that the Suffolk dialect is equally so, although perhaps less celebrated. The Suffolk dialect has many distinctive characteristics, some of which, however, are similar to those of its northern neighbour. Yet it

A closely related accent can still be heard in the speech of older people in Colchester and its surrounding towns in northern Essex, where it has not yet quite been displaced by the Estuary dialect of south Essex and the Cockney dialect of the east end of London. The short story competition is open to everyone regardless of age or nationality, and they look forward to receiving entries on every subject imaginable as long as it has a Norfolk theme and a good dose of broad Norfolk dialect! ast Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) supports families and cares for children and young people with life-threatening conditions across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk.

We deliver a range of services including: short break care, specialist play activities, music therapy, hydrotherapy, parent and sibling groups, care at end of life and bereavement support for all family members.

We provide care and support wherever the family wishes – in the families’ own home, in the community or at one of our hospices in Ipswich, Milton or Quidenham. Our Norfolk hospice based in Quidenham celebrates its 21st birthday in 2012. From humble beginnings as a converted stable block and cottages catering for a small number of families, it has developed during the past 21 years to support more than 200 families annually. During this time Quidenham has undertaken building programmes to provide better facilities, introduced community-based care and pioneered a neonatal end of life care pathway with local hospitals and care providers. Also, a 24/7 symptom management support and advice service has been developed between EACH and True Colours Trust. Julia Shirtliffe, Head of Palliative Care Services at Quidenham, became a Queen’s Nurse and
