Welcome Villages, villages, villages. The longer we work on this fabulous little magazine, the more we learn about the many fantastic thriving villages that are in South Norfolk. Our latest focus is on Swardeston and I’m sure you’ll be fascinated to learn how village spirit has been brought back to life thanks to a full schedule of local community events and a great team of enthusiastic locals! Which village should we feature in our next issue? Is your village busy with clubs and activities, cricket matches and church meetings? Have you got a story to share? Do get in touch with me and maybe we could feature YOUR village in our next issue. On the subject of villages I’ve been overwhelmed with the popularity of our Village Notice Board. I could provide pages and pages of charity notices but we are limited with space so the message here is that if you’d like us to feature your event (for free), please make sure you get the information emailed over to us as early as you can. It’s been quite a challenge to keep our new stands in Waitrose Wymondham topped up! The magazines are certainly popular with shoppers in the town. And great to hear from so many of you with ideas for future issues. My ‘to-do’ list is growing longer by the week and quite apt that I happened to spot a very suitable ‘camera opportunity’ whilst on a recent family holiday. Bursting at the seams once again with so much local editorial, too much to mention individually, you’ll just have to read from cover to cover so you don’t miss anything! Read, enjoy & keep your copy handy over the next two months until we are back at the end of July. I’m off for a nap!

Lee West is pleased to announce the 40th anniversary of Diss Bed Centre. The shop was set up 40 years ago by his father, as a second hand and antique shop in Wills Yard, Diss. But the demand for new furniture increased so the family decided to move into beds. At this point, the shop was re-launched as Diss Bed Centre, which sold new stock rather than antiques. Diss Bed Centre was a permanent fixture in Wills Yard for the next 37 years. In 2011, the shop moved out of the town centre to Sawmills Road and this is where you will find it now! It’s still very much a family business, run by a father and son team who pride themselves on customer service and quality furniture. As well as beds, the shop now stocks other household furniture too.
To celebrate their anniversary, Diss Bed Centre are offering 25% off all solid wood furniture and 10% off all bed, mattresses and sofas throughout June. Pop into the shop on Sawmills Road, Diss, or visit www.dissbedcentre.co.uk to find out more.

TERRY’S CHARITY BIKE RIDE
As President of Wymondham Rotary Club and Chair of Governors of Chapel Road School in Attleborough, Wymondham architect Terry Hickman-Smith is not one to sit on his hands. However, for the first time in 50 years, he sat on a bicycle. For 4 days. Cycling 180 miles. He was raising money for Norfolk Special Schools and took a route from Attleborough, taking in all of these schools, going via Dereham, Kings Lynn, Sheringham, Cromer, Caister on Sea, schools in Norwich and back to Attleborough. The money is still coming in and he is hoping to raise a minimum of £5,000 for the schools. Pictured is Terry receiving a cheque from Wymondham Lions Club. Both Rotary and Lions raise money to give to those in need. They take no admin fees or wages for their charity work as all of their members are volunteers. Anyone wishing to know more about Rotary and Lions or help at their events can visit their websites or phone 0845 833 5749.
A TOKEN OF LOVE FOUND IN LONG STRATTON When local author, Ann Bowyer, cleared her father’s house, she discovered a battered locket containing her grandmother’s photo and a lock of hair. A Diss jewellery expert explained WWI soldiers were given these by their sweethearts and she realised her grandfather, a Canadian soldier, had taken it to Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele, where he was awarded the Military Medal. Inspired as a child by her grandmother’s tales, Ann travelled across Europe and Canada uncovering the horrors of WWI and the tough life of Prairie settlers. Through dust storms, plagues of grasshoppers, bitter winters and tornadoes, she reveals the amazing experiences of her grandparents. A Token of Love is available at Jarrolds, Diss Publishing and through Amazon. Ann gives talks on her research and can be contacted at www.annbowyer.com

W
ymondham Business Group are pleased to confirm that they are bringing back the carnival for 2014 and that plans are well under way. David Disney, the group chairman says: “We are planning Wymondham-On-Sea as the theme, and already we have donkey rides, children’s entertainment, a hog roast, a barbecue, and lots of typical seaside stalls including candy floss and toffee apples.
The town centre event will have a walking procession, with a carnival queen and many local groups and companies represented. We wanted to try and capture the fun and inventiveness of a traditional carnival, but remove the vehicles from the procession. The whole event will be taking place within the Middleton Street and Market Street area.”
a finale to the day, and this will be in the Market Place itself. The entertainment will be provided by the finalists of Wymondham’s Got Talent, and the first few auditions have already provided an incredibly high standard. Judges have been narrowing down the entrants at live shows at Wymondham High since April – from sixty acts down to just ten!”
David says: “We’re planning a typical end of the pier show as

Ladies Who Lunch The Marsh harrier
Ipswich Road, Norwich, NR4 6DX • 01603 507513 Ever since it changed from being The George – a pub with a mournful sign of King George the Umpteenth creaking in the wind outside – I have wanted to find out what this place is like. Somehow, whenever we went past it, we were on our way somewhere else. This time we made a special journey and I am glad we did. Access is simple; it’s on the A140 going out of Norwich towards Tesco’s. The car park is big and it’s a level playing field from the car to the door.
T
he place is a tardis; it seems much bigger inside than out. It has 60 tables, but they are scattered across a very large area so there is no feeling of being crammed in. There are also about 20 tables outside, but it was far too frappé for that! We bought our drinks at the bar, my friend had a whole pint of lager, but I spotted a Yorkshire real ale called Mary Jane so had a half pint (driving) but I could have handled a whole pint too. Nice and hoppy. We sat down and studied the menu. Nibbles are available, and I seriously considered the tear and share cheesy garlic bread, but I wanted to have room for pudding later. I had already looked at the menu online and firmly decided to have the slowcooked shoulder of lamb, until my friend beat me to it! So I changed to the classic fish pie. Bizarrely, we then had to return to the bar to order our meals. I didn’t mind too much, but I did hear mutters of consternation coming
from a nearby table of posh ladies who were ‘sitting comfortably’. We didn’t have to wait long for the food, but if you are an impatient diner, I would recommend booking an early table as the place filled up from om twelve thirty onwards. My fish pie was delicious; white fish, smoked fish and prawns in a succulent creamy leek sauce. My friend’s lamb just tenderly fell apart as she tried to cut it. The servings were generous but we still managed to clear our plates. Pudding however outfaced us both: I chose the ultimate chocolate brownie tower that was so big it was leaning over, resting on the ice cream that accompanied it. My friend chose the giant éclair which was … enormous! So much so that she had to resort to a doggy bag to take half home for her husband. Both were totally scrumptious. When it comes to coffee, I tend to feel that I should try something different from my usual filter or

espresso, so after espresso af r a nice chat with afte our waitress Ami, I ordered the Americano. Delicious but too weak for me; I really must remember to stick with the stronger varieties of coffee. My friend had standard filter coffee and was entirely satisfied. Stuffed with food and drink, I toddled off to the ladies; unfortunately the toilets are located upstairs although there is a disabled one on the ground floor. I struggled up the stairs thinking ‘I really should order smaller puddings…’ Maybe next time…

Pygmalion
The classic tale of the flower-girl transformed into a society lady has charmed generations of theatre-goers. Now one of the best-loved plays of the 20th Century – Pygmalion – is being revived with an all-star cast headed by Alistair McGowan, Rula Lenska and Jamie Foreman. We caught up with Alistair McGowan to find out more about his latest on-stage role.
B
est known kn perhaps haps as an impressionist, Alistair has also written and directed, starred in West End musicals and had a thriving career as an actor. Now he is returning to the boards in the role of Professor Henry Higgins in Pygmalion, which will be at Norwich Theatre Royal from 16th-21st June.
And perhaps his experience of being an impressionist makes him the perfect person to play Higgins. “We both share an interest in the specifics of the smallest sounds and we are both fascinated by what accent can say about who we are,” says Alistair. “We all make judgements about people based on how they sound: you hear someone speak and within a couple of sentences, it says something about their background.” Alistair reveals that he shares certain personality traits with Higgins. “I can get quite irritable about life and Higgins can get extremely irritable,” he says. “He’s obsessed with his subject and obsessed by his work. In a way, it’s quite therapeutic for me to get rid of my dark side through playing Higgins.”
Pygmalion runs from Monday 16th June to Saturday 21st June
Tickets are available from the Box Office on 01603 630 000 or Book Online
www.theatreroyalnorwich.co.uk Look at Eliza’s father, for example. Doolittle was much happier as a dustman. When he comes into money, he doesn’t want it.” Shaw’s ideas about the organisation of society and the way in which accent can reveal our place within the social structure are no less relevant today. How should we behave in such circumstances? “I think the key to Higgins and to an extent the key to Shaw is something my father instilled in me,” argues Alistair. “The important thing in life is not having good manners or bad manners but having the same manners. You should treat everybody with the same consideration.”
Alistair is inclined to downplay the element of romance in Pygmalion. alion. He contends that the author of the play, George Bernard Shaw, is dealing with more substantial issues. “I believe that what is important tant for Shaw and for Higgins is the place which each one of us occupies on the ladder. Shaw asks what would uld happen if you take a person like Eliza from one section of societyy and introduce her into another world. Will they be happy in this new milieu? We’ve been talking in rehearsal about Frankenstein, about The X Factor and what happens when people win the lottery.

Harleston
Antiques & Vintage Street Market and Midsummer Street Party For several hundred years Harleston held an annual Fair of St John in late June, which may have had its origins in more ancient midsummer revels.
A
noisy combination of commerce and celebration, it was a time of thanksgiving for the arrival of summer, celebrated with friends, neighbours and visitors. On Sunday 15th June this historic event is being reconfigured for the 21st century with the first Harleston Antiques & Vintage Street Market taking over the centre of town between 9.30am and 4pm. Over 40 antiques and vintage stalls, plus street musicians and various entertainers will provide a rich offering of attractions for local people and visitors. There will also be street food stalls including wood-fired pizzas, pulled pork, the Duck Truck’s crispy duck wraps and Flying Chef’s traditional chargrilled sausages, as well as locally-made Alburgh Ice Creams. Many local shops and businesses will be opening up specially and it will be a unique way for families to celebrate Father’s Day. In the evening, once stalls have been cleared away, a Midsummer Street Party will take over the Market Place with 3 hours of free music entertainment (6 – 9pm). With the centre of town closed to traffic, continental-style tables and chairs in the Market Place, an
outdoor music stage featuring music to suit all tastes and array of delicious street food on offer the organisers hope that this will be a night to remember for the whole community.
Up to date information will be posted on Harleston’s Future Facebook page, the Harleston Information Plus website (www. harleston-norfolk.org.uk/events) or call 01379 855235 for more details.

FREE microchips for Norfolk and Suffolk dogs
D
Chip, Chip, Hooray!
og owners can benefit from FREE microchipping for their pets at Chapelfield Vets thanks to the Dogs Trust Microchipping Through Vets campaign. Starting on the 1st April, local dog owners can contact any of the Chapelfield Vets surgeries to have their dog chipped. Microchips offer a range of benefits, not least the potential to reunite a lost pet with its owner. A microchip is a small electronic chip, around the size of a grain of rice, which is implanted under the dog’s skin and contains a unique number that can be read by a scanner. The dog owner’s contact details relating to each number are logged on a central database, so should the dog ever go missing or be stolen it can be scanned by the authorities and returned to his owner swiftly and safely. It is vital that the owner takes responsibility for updating their details with the database should their circumstances change.
reduce the number of dogs put to sleep in council pounds because their owners cannot be traced. “Microchipping will be compulsory for all dogs in England from April 2016 and Wales from April 2015 and Dogs Trust wants to ensure that all dog owners can have this simple procedure carried out for free. The vets of England and Wales are a vital part of this and we’d like to say a huge thank you to them for their support.” To make an appointment, dog owners should call Chapelfield Veterinary Partnership on: Brooke 01508 558228, Long Stratton 01508 530686, Costessey 01603 743725, Wymondham 01953 602139 and Norwich 01603 629046 .
The Dogs Trust is an international organisation with 18 rehoming centres in the UK and one in Ireland. The charity cares for over 16,000 stray, unwanted and abandoned dogs each year. Elvira Meucci-Lyons, from the Dogs Trust, says: “Last year 111,986 stray and abandoned dogs were picked up by Local Authorities across the UK, with only 40% reunited with their owners. Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts is shortlisted for Museum of the Year award
T
The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, at the University of East Anglia, Norwich is one of the six finalists for the prestigious Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year 2014.
he Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year, awarded annually with a value of £100,000, was established in 2003 to recognise the very best of the UK’s internationally acclaimed museums. It has been supported by the Art Fund since 2008. Previous winners include the William Morris Gallery, Walthamstow, London (2013); the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter (2012), and the British Museum, London (2011). 2013 was a standout year for the Sainsbury Centre coinciding with the 50th Anniversary of the University of East Anglia. This saw the opening of re-designed facilities including the largest temporary exhibition space in eastern England; a new East Gallery devoted to a complete redisplay of the Permanent Collection; flexible use of additional spaces devoted to modern and contemporary art; and a new shop, café and leisure area. These new spaces were launched
246 26
in September 2013 with the opening of the most ambitious exhibition in the Centre’s 35 year history; Masterpieces: Art and East Anglia. Celebrating the rich culture and artistic heritage of East Anglia the exhibition received national acclaim welcoming nearly 46,000 visitors, the highest attendance figure for a temporary exhibition at the Sainsbury Centre. The accompanying exhibition publication received the accolade of EDP-Jarrold East Anglian 2013 Book of the Year Award. Commenting on the news Paul Greenhalgh, Director of the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, said: “I am delighted that the Sainsbury Centre has been shortlisted for the Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year Award 2014. Our most ambitious exhibition Masterpieces: Art and East Anglia has achieved all the goals we set ourselves: it has placed the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in the public eye,
not only in the region but also nationally and internationally.” The other five museums which have been selected as finalists for the Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year are: Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft, East Sussex; Hayward Gallery, London; The Mary Rose Museum, Portsmouth; Tate Britain, London; and Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield. The winner will be announced at a ceremony at the National Gallery in London on Wednesday 9 July 2014. The Prize is also encouraging the public to show their support for their favourite museum by launching a photography competition and the Sainsbury Centre will be holding a photography workshop for budding photographers on June 7. All information about Museum of the Year 2014 and the photography competition can be found at www.artfund.org/prize

Garden Jottings from Ken
hat makes a garden unique? Well it could be any number of things – the shape, the style, the skill and enthusiasm of the gardener, or the time available to create and maintain it – but most of all it’s the way plants are chosen and used.
For fences and walls, try growing a ve velvety-leaved lvet lv ety-leave Kiwi (Actinidia deliciosa) or its relative, Actinidia tinidia ko kolomikta lomikta (Paint-brush vine). Evergreen screeners eeners may may include Hydrangea seemannii, (self-clinging, whit white lace-cap flowers, great for shade), Holboellia latif latifolia (fastgrowing with small inedible sausage-likee fruits), or an Akebia quinata (the Chocolate vine – need I say more!)
Getting the right plant in just the right place is not easy, it takes an understanding of its needs. Put a sun-lover in the shade and it may hang on, but it’s unlikely to perform well, leaving you disappointed and disillusioned, so please ask for suggestions and advice if needed.
Of course, you shouldn’t forget the flower bor borders borders, ders, choice plants might include Anthriscus ‘Ravenswing’ avenswing ave nswing’ a purple-leaved form of Cow parsley (d (dead-head ead-head to avoid seeding), the new Polemonium lemonium ‘Stair ‘Stairwa ‘Stairway way to Heaven’ with subtle tri-coloured leavess and light purple/blue flowers, Eryngium bourgatii, gatii, a cur curly-leaved ly-lea Sea holly which loves the sun and is ador adored ed by bumble bees (I counted 24 on a plant one summer!)
An elegant tree or shrub provides long-term interest and will create a focal point, many are slow growing and so are suitable for small gardens or for containergrowing. Flowering dogwoods are grown for their stunning flower-like bracts, try Cornus florida ‘Eddie’s White Wonder’ with ‘flowers’ 4” (10cm) across, or Cornus florida rubra with its beautiful pink hues. Ginkgo biloba, an ancient tree (around with the dinosaurs), has light airy foliage which turns butter-yellow in October. Japanese maples (Acers) have delicate drooping leaves, they require shelter from the wind but give breathtaking autumn colours.
For sunny positions the evergreen Carpenteria Californica will stun you with its pure white flowers, Lophomyrtus ‘Black Pearl’ has beautifully veined glossy maroon foliage, and Nandina domestica (Heavenly bamboo) offers changing interest all year-round.
Given the right conditions, you’ll be rewarded with a plant that fulfils your expectations – making your garden that little bit more special and you’ll be amazed by just what you can grow! If the site is open and reliably moist grow Caltha ‘Flore Pleno’, a double-flowered Marsh marigold, under the dark leaves of Rheum ‘Ace of Hearts’, or Ligular Ligularia ia ‘Br ‘Brittitt Marie Crawford’.Beauty is in the eye of the beholder beholder, and the above plants are just a few of my man manyy favourites. Every garden should have some tr treasur treasures easur that mean something special to you – fulfilling an ur urge, ge wish or desire – maybe a memory of people kn known own or places visited, planted to mark an event ent in the past, the present, or even the future. These ma mayy be ev every-day er yor unusual varieties, purchased by yourself urself or re received ceived ceiv ed as a gift, but it’s these plants that make your ur garden as individual as you are.
Cheers, Ken

PLOT SUMMER SUN
At this time of year, lots of villages around Norfolk and Suffolk organise open garden weekends. Take the opportunity to have a look around your neighbours’ gardens to see what other people are growing and get some new ideas for your own garden! See our Village Noticeboard to find out what is going on near you.
PLANT STRAWBERRIES Who can resist a bowl of delicious British strawberries and cream? For an almost instant home-grown supply, buy strawberry plants now and plant them in a sunny, sheltered spot. The soil will need to be well-drained as too much moisture can cause a mould disease. As the fruit grows big and juicy, protect the strawberries from drooping onto the soil by surrounding the plants with straw or black plastic. Keep the plants well fed with tomato food once a week.

THE KITCHEN GARDEN
The kitchen garden is really coming into its own by June and some of your herbs might be ready for picking. The best time to pick them is on a dry sunny morning (before the heat of the midday sun releases the herb’s essential oils) and make sure you use them shortly after you have picked them. If you want to dry them, tie the stalks together and hang them upside down in your airing cupboard. Once
dry, store them in an airtight container. Lettuce, radishes and other salads will be ready to harvest now too, along with some early potatoes. Again, the morning is the best time to pick, and make sure you choose the leaves around the edge of the plant. If you want to keep up your salad supplies throughout summer, keep planting fast-growing lettuces throughout the season.

HANGING BASKETS IN FULL BLOOM
Now is a great time to hang up those summer baskets, which will now be overflowing with colourful blooms and buzzing with bees. Make sure they are within easy reach because needless to say, they will need regular watering in warm weather. It is best to water your flowers in the morning or evening when the sun is still low and make sure you ask a neighbour to water them for you if you go on holiday.

Celebrate High Summer’s Blossom and Blooms June and July is the peak of summer and whether it’s a scorcher or a damp squib there is plenty to celebrate in the hedgerows, fields and meadows, says Jon Tyler.
S
pring may be the best time to make the most of the many flowers in woodlands before the tree leaves have shaded out the sun. By June grasslands are the place for the natural world’s flower show celebration. Sometimes with over 30 plant species per square metre old pastures and meadows can produce displays of blooms to rival anything at a summer flower show. There are elegant honey scented orchids (including bee, pyramidal and marsh) tall spikes of purple loose-strife and plants with evocative names such as goat’s-beard, ox-eye daisies, yellow rattle, lady’s bedstraw, ale hoof and dropwort. Meanwhile in the hedges, dog rose (derived from dagger -rose; a reference to the sharp thorns) and sweet briar are in full bloom and scent. Later in the year they will become rosehips, famous as a source of vitamin C. But in summer the soft flower petals can be dissolved in hot sugar syrup to make rose petal jam. If you’re a fan of the Turkish delight flavour it’s worth the effort of making some and it is gorgeous on scones for summer afternoon tea. Continuing the tea theme several summer blooms make fine flavoured drinks and infusions. Try out the delicate elegance and sophistication of lime tree blossom tea. Lime or linden might also be known as the
humming tree for on a warm day when the tree is bejewelled with sweet scented creamy flowers, so the air is filled with the sound of bees buzzing. Unsurprisingly limes tree blossom also makes a lovely fragrant light coloured honey. Elderflowers promise a myriad of tasty summer treats; from fizzy champagne and sorbet to decadent elderflower doughnuts where the whole flower head can be dipped in batter and deep fried. Make the most of the bounty and capture that summer feeling by making elder flower cordial. Then even in the depths of winter you can revive the sweet perfumed flavour and enjoy a glassful of the summer again. In July growing in glades and along woodland edges wild strawberries are easily over looked. This diminutive natural cousin of the garden variety makes up for it in taste what it lacks in size.
Not as sweet but with far more fragrance a handful tossed in with cream whipped up with a dash of cassis (blackcurrant liquor) is a true summer treat indeed. Alternatively if the weather is a little on the damp side take some comfort in the fact that it might not be good for tennis but when it rains so comes the fungi. Despite mushroom season being associated with the autumn there is an impressive number of summer fungi especially in fields; wax-caps, fairy ring mushrooms and field mushrooms can in some years be found in profusion. A particular summer delicacy is the vivid sulphur yellow coloured chicken of the woods fungi growing in tiers on the trunks of old trees. More like chicken nuggets of the woods when young, it can expand to a large size and amazingly it does resemble chicken though more in texture than taste. So with all these many wonders to be discovered, why not grab a picnic and get out into the wilds to make the most of nature’s own summer celebration.

The inspiring landscape of Norfolk
This summer, Glynn Burrows from Norfolk Tours talk us through the best places to whet your cultural appetite in Norfolk.
T
his area of England has always been a magnet for artists and writers. The landscape is such that the skies seem to go on forever and the beautiful shades of green, at this time of year, are breath-taking. It’s impossible to travel many miles without coming across a church, castle, cottage or a ruined building worthy of being painted, photographed or described. There are over 700 medieval churches in Norfolk alone and several of those are in ruins. Some of them are well kept but the more evocative are overgrown and hidden away, many along tiny dirt tracks or in the middle of fields. Castles? We have everything in East Anglia, from prehistoric earthworks to Norman castles and fortified houses. They never cease to fill me with awe. How on earth did those people, all those years ago, build such amazing structures? Some took generations to build and, even though they are hundreds and in some cases, thousands of years old, they still stand as a reminder of those that constructed them. For the specialists, the opportunities are there to look at some aspects for serious study. It could be medieval church architecture, font covers, stone memorials, life in a 17th century stately home or the paintings of The Norwich School of Art. There are a never-ending number of subjects which could be studied in great depth in the area. If you are studying life in a country mansion, you can
Blickling Hall
visit places such as Holkham, Houghton or Blickling but if it’s the cottages and workplaces of the common Norwich Castle folk who lived here in the past which is your passion, these can also be researched by visiting such places as Gressenhall Rural Life Museum. How families of ten lived in tiny cottages, how a windmill worked, what was that building used for are all questions which you might ask. These are the types of questions that have always fascinated me and many can be answered by visiting our wonderful museums. The seaside! We are very fortunate in that we have a very varied coastline, from golden sands, rocky shorelines, salt-marshes, cliffs and some beautifully noisy pebble beaches. (If you have never heard the noise made by the sea on stones, it can be deafening!) The opportunities for artists and photographers are endless and writers just adore the atmosphere this area offers. Next time you are out for a walk or a bike ride, take your camera and snap some typical Norfolk views. Try your hand at painting or write a short story about a local building or place of interest. You may just surprise yourself with some hidden talents!

he sound of swing is as popular today as it has ever been – whether it’s the classic sounds of yesteryear from legendary crooners, band leaders and musicians such as Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, Glenn Miller and Louis Armstrong, or more recent singers such as Harry Connick Jr or Michael Bublé. Even Rod Stewart, Christina Aguilera and Robbie Williams have got in on the act too by dipping into the Great American Songbook. Now Norfolk audiences can enjoy an evening of the best of the genre with a contemporary twist as the Kings of Swing orchestra performs at Norwich Theatre Royal on Sunday, June 22nd, at 7.30pm – and readers of Village People are in with a chance of winning tickets to be in the audience. This distinctive music developed out of the jazz craze of the early 1930s in America with the period between 1935 and 1946 becoming known as the Swing Era.

We shall not sleep,
though poppies grow in Flanders fields In the last issue local historian and professional genealogist, Sarah Doig, wrote about the men of our region who died in the First World War and who are commemorated on village war memorials. This time, Sarah has taken a closer look at one of the thousands of rank and file soldiers who lost their life in the conflict.
T
he surviving service record for Private Arthur Henry Everett, held in The National Archives, tells the tale of a young man born in Tasburgh, Norfolk. His next of kin recorded is his mother, Miranda Goose of Cats Corner, Tasburgh. Arthur Everett, an agricultural labourer born on 7th November 1893, was enlisted into the 9th Battalion of the Norfolk Regiment on 10th September 1914. The medical form records that he had blue eyes and light brown hair, was 5ft 10¾in tall and weighed 157 pounds. Details of his service show that he served at home until 29th August 1915 when he was sent to France as part of the British Expeditionary Force. A final, sad entry records that he was killed in action on 26th September 1915, place unknown.
This was a brass plaque just over 4½ inches in diameter bearing the inscription: “He died for freedom and honour” along with the name of each individual soldier. The accompanying scroll reads: “He whom this scroll commemorates was numbered among those who, at the call of King and Country, left all that was dear to them endured hardness, faced danger, and finally passed out of the sight of men by the path of duty and self- sacrifice, giving up their own lives that others might live in freedom. Let those who come after see to it that his name be not forgotten.” The Commonwealth War Graves Commission website (www.cwgc.org) gives details of the final resting or commemoration place of each soldier who died. Arthur Henry Everett is commemorated at the Loos Memorial in France which lists over 20,000 officers and men who have no known grave, who fell in the area from the River Lys to the old southern boundary of the First Army, east and west of Grenay. If you would like to discover more about the history of your family or house then Sarah can help. Give her a call on 01379 890215 or visit www.ancestral-heritage.co.uk to find out more.
Attached to Arthur Everett’s service record are the various signed receipts from his mother for the three medals he was awarded posthumously; the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. This set of three medals were primarily awarded to members of the British Expeditionary Force, and the set, or at least the British War Medal and the Victory Medal, are the most likely medals to be found among family heirlooms. Arthur Everett’s mother also acknowledged receipt of the commemorative memorial plaque and scroll which was given to the relatives of those whose deaths were attributable to the Great War. This memorial plaque is better known now as the “Death Penny”.

Hethersett Social Bowls Club
W
ith the fast approaching arrival of summer I and my fellow bowlers at Hethersett Social Bowls Club look forward to some long warm balmy evenings in which to enjoy our favourite sport of bowls. The game of bowls has a long history and records from 1299AD show that it was already well established in England then. There is a famous story from 1588 when Sir Frances Drake is said to have continued his game of bowls as the Armada approached with the words “we still have time to finish the game and to thrash the Spaniards, too.” So what is the fascination of this game and why do so many people play it? It really is an all year round sport that anyone can play. Outdoor or indoor it is a sport for all ages and abilities. Many people do enjoy the game during retirement, but there are many younger players from early teens to those like me rushing away from work on a regular basis to get to a game on time. The aim of the game is simple. Get your bowls as close as possible to a small white ball called the ‘jack’. It might sound easy, but the fact that the bowls do not travel in a straight line seriously adds to the tactical challenge. The bowls are not quite round and have
an in-built bias. As the bowl slows, it begins to roll in the direction of the bias. Bowlers will therefore change the side of the bias, depending on the direction in which they want the bowl to curve. The challenge of all shots is to be able to adjust line and length accordingly to ensure ending close to the jack. Outdoor there are several different versions of the game, played with 2, 3 or 4 bowls and in rinks (straight lines across the green) or roving (using most of the green). At Hethersett Social we play in 5 leagues with games 3 or 4 evenings a week either at home or away and also on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. We are always looking for experienced players to join our teams. If you simply would like to find out more, learn how to play the game or would prefer to just play socially, we have a roll-up on Thursday afternoons to which anyone is welcome. We can provide some bowls for new players to start with. We welcome new members, especially experienced bowlers but also newcomers to the game. For further information please contact Jack Walters, Hethersett Social Bowls Club on 01603 810959 Carole Slaughter Hethersett Social Bowls Club, Queens Road, Hethersett NR9 3DB

Latest Film Releases
This issue, our resident film buff, Ian Kemsley from Suffolk, previews a musical, a romcom and a sci-fi so there should be something for everyone!
And So It Goes
Jupi Ascendingg Jupiter
In an escape from the CGI hell that is modern cinema during the summer (Transformers 4… really?!), here’s a romcom for the (late) middle-aged. Rob Reiner re-teams with American President star Michael Douglas, who this time plays a grumpy estate agent with grandchildren problems who enlists the help of neighbour Diane Keaton. I feel this may veer into Nancy Meyer’s Something’s Gotta Give territory (which had Keaton sparring with Jack Nicholson), which is cause to recommend it. Frankie Valli co-stars. Release: 18 July Now, I couldn’t go the whole summer without some No kind of sci-fi fantasy CGI fix, I admit it. But at least this one’s not a sequel. And it’s by the Wachowskis, who made The Matrix (one of the best films ever made). They also made Cloud Atlas, which was just a mistake. It stars Channing Tatum (also soon to be seen in comedy 22 Jump Street) and Mila Kunis (the object of Natalie Portman’s paranoia in Black Swan), who may be the one to save the universe. Given the Wachowski’s storytelling and technical mastery, this is one to watch. And we can’t complain about endless sequels if we don’t give something original a try. Release: 25 July
Jersey Boys Clint Eastwood directs this film version of the successful and award-winning stage musical, which tells the story of the Four Seasons and their star Frankie Valli. Eastwood was keen to use the Broadway cast where possible, and John Lloyd Young makes the leap to the big screen as Valli. Eastwood has always had an interest in music, and directed Bird, a biopic of jazz legend Charlie Parker in 1988. He now often scores his own films. Here he builds on his post-Unforgiven mature work, which has encompassed biopics of Nelson Mandela and J Edgar Hoover, and a great non-CGI evening out is guaranteed for all, old and young. Release: 20 June

GREAT FUN F OR AL L THE FAMIL Y
Welcome to the Diss Carnival! The Diss Carnival takes place on Sunday 15th June with a theme of “Diss Through The Ages”. We spoke to the carnival co-ordinator, Doreen Collins, about what we can look forward to seeing at the carnival.
“W
e hope that those taking part will enjoy researching the history of our wonderful town,” she said. “Visitors can enjoy watching the colourful procession of floats and walking groups and we want as many people as possible to come along, take part and enjoy this great family event.”
52
The entertainment commences
at about 11.30am with the Hoxon Hundred Morris dancers and friends performing in the Market Place and Mere’s Mouth. The carnival procession of floats and walking groups, led by the Norwich Samba Band, leaves Roydon Road at 1pm and makes its way through the town centre before finishing on Shelfanger Road at around 2pm. As usual the fun day starts at 2pm at Diss Town Football Club
in Brewers Green Lane. A few very special visitors – the Falcons Parachute Display Team – will be dropping in. The RAF Falcons are widely recognised as the UK’s premier military parachute display team so prepare to be impressed! New for this year’s event will be Phoenix Rescue with their birds of prey and a fly past by a Spitfire. A few favourites attending again
Photos courtesy of John Hutton
include Bazza Bizarre, children’s rides, a climbing wall, bungee trampolines, Zoo-Tastic and by popular demand the craft marquee. Park Radio have agreed to attend again this year with their road show and there will be displays by the Norwich Samba Band and the young Arts Project members of Unit23 to name just two! As usual there will also be an assortment of stalls provided by local groups and businesses and refreshments will include a
BBQ, hog roast and vegetarian option. Keep checking the website www.diss-carnival.co.uk for more updates. “The success of the carnival depends on the support of the local residents and the clubs and societies that take part,” says Doreen. “We hope that this year’s event will prove to be the best yet and the carnival committee look forward to welcoming you all to this year’s event on Sunday 15th June!”

Behind the curtain
at the Theatre Royal
Do you enjoy theatre? The anticipation of the performance, the hive of activity in the auditorium and then the curtains lift, and behold great drama, opera, musicals and comedy.
W
hat many of you won’t know is the magic created beyond the curtain. As a registered charity, Norwich Theatre Royal works with about 5000 children each year, including 200 who participate in our flagship education programme the Norfolk Schools Project. The project introduces them to opera inspired by a touring production like English Touring Opera’s The Magic Flute or Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures’The Lord of The Flies. They write their own mini opera, which they then perform on the Theatre Royal stage. The biannual project takes 3 months each spring and autumn. Children, their parents and their teachers all say that they are more confident, proud, creative and work better in a team. Laetitia Webb, development director, recalls a moment from a past project in a rural school: “One child, who I thought was being bullied, was
actually excluding herself from class activities. It was as though she didn’t think her contribution was worthwhile. During the course of the project our arts practitioners brought her into the fold and involved her in the creative process. At the end of the three months I could hardly recognise her to be the same girl; suddenly a large beaming smile appeared as she skipped across the school hall in the final rehearsal. I’ll never forget that moment.”
If you would like to see a performance yourself, the project will be working with three Norfolk Primary Schools between September and November. Please contact Laetitia Webb for details. Tickets are free although donations on the day are welcomed. For more information e-mail L.webb@theatreroyalnorwich.co.uk or call 01603 598558

F
rench-born grandmother, Anna Bayles from Wymondham Catholic Church, may be nudging ninety but she has no intention of retiring from helping to clothe under-privileged youngsters from Africa and East Anglia.
Anna has been honing her stitching and knitting skills for over 75 years and now they are used almost daily for an extraordinary mission of love. Despite a busy domestic schedule and caring for her blind husband she brings joy and warmth to hundreds of youngsters with her pretty and bright creations. “God has given me such a wonderful gift to use,” says Anna, who is also a co-ordinator for Christian Hope International which distributes hand-knitted clothing to children’s homes and community outreach projects in Eastern Europe. “For birthdays and mother’s day my family often give me material which they know I prefer to chocolate and flowers, enabling me to sew more children’s clothes. I am always asking God to help me in what I do and I am mindful to thank him regularly for the energy and enthusiasm I have,” says Anna. The 89 year-old pensioner learnt to sew and knit while growing up in rural France, 35 miles from Paris. She was one of the youngest of 18 siblings and step-siblings when her mother married a man with eight children. She followed in her mother’s thrifty footsteps to ease the family budget with her make-do, mend and sew philosophy. She was taught to sew by a nun friend who also nurtured her Christian faith that grew with daily
church attendance before school. Anna’s needlework was further ther helped at regular sewing wing classes held at the family farm. “Although we were re too poor to afford the fees I was allowed to join the sessions for nothing since my mother let the room to the sewing tutor,” says Anna. Anna’s skills became a blessing when war broke out and the Germans moved in, terrorising her quiet neighbourhood. “We lost everything, including our freedom” she recalls. “When I was about 15 we were forced to evacuate for four months. On our return, our home had been bombed and looted. During the evacuation I helped my mother who did needlework for neighbours in exchange for a loaf of bread or some eggs,” says Anna. After she married and moved to her husband’s native Norfolk she sewed clothes for her family including the couple’s four adopted children, Martine, Philippe, Monique and Jean-Pierre. Three years ago the talents of the former French teacher birthed a passionate mission when she heard a stirring report about poor African orphans and Aids children during a church meeting. Now some of the couple’s pension buys bargain wool and material including duvet sets and curtains which together with fabric donations are turned into garments for Ugandan girls and boys and street children in Tanzania. “When the sun goes down in Africa it can be quite cold so I also spend every evening knitting jumpers to keep the children warm,” says Anna. The garments are collected regularly by friends who deliver them personally to the children. “I always involve my husband, telling him about each garment. Although he cannot see, he gives each item a stamp of approval as he feels the fabric and tests the elastic for size.” www.christianhope.org.uk

Discover the history of your village
with Quatrefoil books
Quatrefoil local history group was formed to research the history of the villages of Botesdale, Redgrave and The Rickinghalls in Suffolk and to make this research available to all by various means, principally by publishing books. The team wanted to stimulate new and renewed interest in the locality and its inhabitants over the centuries. The aim was to inspire people to discover more about local history and to enjoy walking in the footsteps of others.
Q
uatrefoil was awarded a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund under “All Our Stories Programme” presented by Michael Wood and the BBC. Helpful support was given by the University of East Anglia’s Ideas Bank initiative.
As a result of all this Quatrefoil, under the chairmanship of Sarah Doig, have now reached the end of the extended grant period and have published eight books on local history. These books include A Suffolk Boy in East Anglia, which is an inspiring story on the life of Samuel Speare, a fifteen year old boy who left Rickinghall to become a missionary in Zanzibar in 1868. A Walk Through Botesdale and A Walk Through Rickinghall are books telling the history of various parts of the two villages from the medieval period through to the present. St. Mary’s Church Rickinghall Inferior is a church guide mentioning local craftsmen where possible. Reflections on Redgrave: Parts One and Two are a miscellany of parish magazine articles on various aspects of the history of Redgrave. Victorian and Edwardian Rectors of Rickinghall tells the stories of some of the interesting rectors and their families. Botesdale Medieval Market is the result of years of research into the Latin Manorial Court Rolls.
The books sell for £5 each, apart from the church guide which is £3.
celebrating The original Quatrefoil team three books publication of their first
All the books are available from Diana Maywhort (01379 898785) or Jean Sheehan (01379 890 237). The church guide is available from Rickinghall Inferior Church and the remainder of the books from Hill Top Hardware Stores and Pet Food Store, Botesdale. The Redgrave books are also available from Redgrave Community Shop. Profits from the sales of these books will be used to finance further publications. The next three will be on WW1, WW11 and Basil Brown, the Rickinghall archaeologist who discovered the Sutton Hoo ship burial. Further information can be obtained on Quatrefoil’s web site www.quatrefoil.org.uk

Village spirit returns to Swardeston
Thanks to a full schedule of community events, Swardeston village spirit has been brought back to life, writes the chairman of Swardeston Live, Kirstie Pope.
I
t started as a casual conversation on a dog walk one fine sunny day on Swardeston Common: “We should do something as a village for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee”. It was decided a family fun day was the way to go, free to everyone in Swardeston. It was necessary to raise funds so we held a coffee morning and craft sale and were helped with donations from South Norfolk Council, Swardeston Parish Council & St Mary’s Church. The day included games for the children, sports day races for all ages, fancy dress and knobbly knee competition, bring and share lunch and a good old fashioned sing song to close the day. Our plans were to attract 100 people so imagine our amazement on the day when the crowds came....and came.....and came. We estimate 250-300 attended on the day. Following our success, we decided to form a group called “Swardeston Live” to continue providing entertainment to the villagers of Swardeston. Our first event in 2012 celebrated 70 years since the participation of the USA in World War II. “Across the Pond” included a 1940s dance with live swing band and a movie night in the village hall. The dance was amazing, we sold 100 tickets and the village danced the night away to the sounds of Glen Miller and the like. Our youngest attendee was 16 and our oldest was 90 (something). We even had a couple who met at a dance in Swardeston Village Hall during the war. Along followed Movie Nights at the Village Hall. “Philomena” in March of this year brought in 102 people! The doors opened and the crowds flooded in. Goodness knows how we seated them but we did and a great night was had by all. We now hold a coffee morning “The Jubilee Club” on the second Tuesday of every month at the Social Club where you can come along and
enjoy a gossip over coffee and homemade cake. We are also aware of an interest in village history which encouraged us to form a group called “Old Swardeston”. We hold regular exhibitions where people can submit photographs and documents to be displayed. Perhaps the most pleasing aspect of all of this is the effect on the various clubs and societies in the village, like the cricket club and the church. We now work together effectively and not only does this enhance village spirit but it is beginning to make the activities more successful. Swardeston has once again become a strong community. If you would like to share your village experience with us or hear more about our story, please e-mail us at swardestonlive@talktalk. net or like us on Facebook (Swardeston Live).

Blue Skies and Boat Trips – The Norfolk of Brian Lewis Alan Marshall Mascot Media 9780957181168 Hardback with colour illustrations £22.50
There are many books on the beautiful historic buildings of Norwich, but this isn’t one of them. Instead it is about the houses of ordinary people: the streets, terraces, courts and yards of a growing city. Clearly a great deal of research has gone into the production of this fascinating volume, which looks at how the city’s suburbs grew, as well as focusing on changes in local government and changing attitudes to the slums and substandard properties of Norwich.
Brian Lewis moved to Norfolk in 1981 and has been painting the county ever since. His canvases are largely about sunny days, blue skies, big views, wildlife, characterful people and places. The vibrant book is split into sections such as ‘Cromer & Felbrigg’, ‘Seal Trips’, ‘Norwich & Inland Norfolk’ and you have a sense that Brian has spent more time studying (and painting) the far-flung reaches of the region than most of its natives ever will.
BOOKS
Norwich, An Expanding City, 1801-1900 Rosemary O’Donoghue Larks Press 9781904006718 Paperback £10
The author takes five well-known lives that span over 150 years of the city’s history, including the writer George Borrow and the architect George Skipper (who, amongst many other commissions, designed much of the Jarrolds London Street store). Each is linked to Norwich, but Pete Goodrum makes connections between his five subjects to reveal how their lives were also extraordinarily interconnected.

V
iew your region from a different perspective with this fascinating selection of local titles from Chris Rushby of Jarrolds Book Department.
It may be hard to pick out a favourite part of such a beautiful region, but for quite a few people it would be the villages and coastline around Blakeney, Cley, Morston and Wiveton, subjects of this highly illustrated new book. A visitor will probably recognise many of the scenes recorded here; and if you’re local you’ll recognise many of the people: including artists, publicans, shopkeepers, seal trip skippers and café owners.
During the Cold War RAF Sculthorpe was a front-line nuclear bomber base for the American Air Force, as well as being a centre for intelligence gathering via secret surveillance missions over Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. Peter Gunn tells, for the first time, the full story of the base from its origins in World War Two, through its heyday in the 1950s, to its eventual deactivation.
Norfolk Broads – The Biography Pete Goodrum
Amberley 9781445613192 Paperback £16.99
The prolific Pete Goodrum (also author of Norwich In The 1950s and … In The1960s) has two books in this month’s selection, the second one a biography of the partly man-made waterway system that simply defines the region for many of its visitors. The book is crammed with facts, anecdotes and illustrations and covers the whole history of the Norfolk (and Suffolk) Broads from their origins to the present day.

Diss design collective
celebrates a year of creativity
Diss Designer Makers @ 21 are celebrating their first year of creativity this summer! An eclectic group of craftspeople are breathing new life into a huge Victorian shop on St Nicholas Street which they use as their studio and gallery. Designer Makers @ 21 was set up in May 2013 by four enthusiastic artists looking for somewhere to work and display their creations.
Now there are 11 highly skilled craftspeople working from the shop. Designer Makers @ 21 aims to continue building a collective of local makers and to encourage the growth of creative businesses in Diss. Open to the public on Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10am till 5pm, you can be assured of a warm welcome.
Meet the Makers
There is always a sense of discovery at Designer Makers @ 21 and visitors can expect to see something new each week as the crafters try new techniques. The whole spectrum of design is covered from lively upholstery to sculpture, textile printing on clothes to stained glass design. Visitors appreciate seeing crafters at work and enjoy commissioning original designs.
Work by Joan Johns in showcase gallery
Kathy Scott

Craft Workshops
Textile art, influenced by the smallest detail in the landscape, makes you want to take a second, closer look. The latest member, Kate Heath, works in silver and semi-precious stone, making individual pieces of high quality.
For those who like to be “hands on”, workshops are available in corsage millinery, mosaic design and Saori weaving. This Japanese form of textured weaving is unique in this country and one of the makers, Kim Marangan, has been to Japan to study this form of cloth making. Her studio is testament to her passion for the craft. The craft workshops are proving to be popular and to everyone’s surprise even a recent singing workshop was totally melodious!
Guest Designers Designer Makers 21 also show cases guest designers. At the moment, there are three local guest designers on show. This work will be on display for 3 months, then later in year new guest artists will be invited to bring their work to the showcase:
Tatty-Yaya’s Beautiful handmade colourful beads made into very wearable jewellery. Joan Johns Ceramics inspired by the Ibo Tribe and evocative wall hangings which reflect the Norfolk and Suffolk landscapes. Seren Papercuts Amazingly fine work which is a modern take on a much older skill.

Are you ready for a challenge??
Set yourself some goals Ha Have you ever joined a gym only to find that a few weeks we later you have fallen by the wayside? Why is this the case? There can be lots of reasons but the most common is that you never really had a target to aim for or weren’t sure how to hit it.
Are you serious about losing weight and getting into shape this summer? If the answer is yes, then you’ve got to try Insanity! We spoke to local fitness instructor, Lucia Alba, about this intense new fitness challenge.
At The Fit Club, we work with the S.M.A.R.T. principle, to help people set targets which they can achieve:
“Insanity is an extreme fitness challenge,” she says, “but the results really can be incredible. You perform long bursts of maximum-intensity exercises with short periods of rest. Each workout keeps you constantly challenged as you alternate between aerobic and anaerobic intervals performed at your max. You can burn up to 1,000 calories an hour, so it is perfect for getting a beach body for your holidays – fast!”
Specific: Make your goals as specific as possible S (i.e. I want to lose 7lbs of body fat) Measurable: easurable: Have a measuring system for your goal
In good
Agreed: You have agreed with your coach what is the goal and how you get there
HEALTH
Lucia loves fitness and has been dancing since the age of 4. She is passionate about Latin dancing and also runs Zumba and FitSteps classes in Norfolk.
Realistic: The goal you agreed has been confirmed or revised to be realistic by your coach Time bound: You have an end date for this goal
For help setting your fitness goals, call The Fit Club, Wymondham on 01953 606665
Find out more about Lucia’s classes by calling 07776201645 or visiting www.luciafitness.com
Rev up your metabolism
with weight training Genetics and gender play a part in how efficiently we burn off calories but there is still a lot we can do to improve our calorie burning efficiency. Every decade your metabolism slows down by around 5%. Hormones are partly to blame, but so is the typical drop off in physical activity. Based on these figures by the time you get to 35 you’ll burn about 75 calories per day fewer than you did at 25 and by the time you get to 65 you’ll burn around 500 fewer.
turning fuel into energy to help build muscle. In your 40s, your hormones start to diminish, slowing your metabolism further causing body fat. To maintain or build bigger muscle regardless of your age swap long hours of cardio for shorter, more intense workouts like Circuit Training or Kettlebells which combine weights with fitness work. Q&A HEALTH Natural solutions for your health problem Q: A:
I’ve been finding it hard to concentrate at work and feeling stressed and irritable. What can you suggest?
If you are feeling irritable, impatient, suffering with increased anxiety, low in energy or mood and finding it hard to concentrate, try drinking a couple of glasses of water. You may find the water picks you up more than you might imagine as the brain is one of the organs in most need of water.
When we fail to give our body healthy fluids, we are putting it under further stress. So increase your chances of keeping calm and carry on drinking the fluids that maintain good hydration. Here are some ideas to help you: • Avoid excessive caffeine or alcohol – both act as a diuretic and deplete the body of important minerals and nutrients • Avoid too much salt or sugar as they put strain on the kidneys and the kidneys are essential for regulating volume and balance of bodily fluids
• If you struggle with drinking plain water, try adding a slice of lemon or fresh ginger. • Increase fluid intake through consumption of fruit and vegetables by making broths and homemade green juices • Don’t drink your glass of water with your food, rather ensure that you drink it at least 20 minutes either side of a meal • Make sure that you drink one of your daily big glasses of water on waking. Some of the benefits of water at this time of day specifically are hydration of cells after a long period without water, detoxification and improved metabolism.

Ancient Oriental Astrology
FOR A MODERN LIFE To discover your Ki Star and for more information about Ki Astrology please visit: www.freeflow-fengshui.com. Below is your 9 Star Ki forecast for June and July.
9 Fire Star You may feel unwilling to entertain or socialize during June. It’s more of a time for soul searching and spiritual development. Picture the seed (you) building strength in order to grow. Act quickly if you feel the affects of a cold or recurring illness, it could take much longer to shake off than normal. 8 Earth Star Not a lot escapes your attention in June as you see clearly the truth of situations. It’s also a time for romance and indeed recognition for your recent hard work, as the cosmic spotlight shines upon you. July brings an inner focus; time to look at yourself and if necessary, make some changes. 7 Metal Star
Take things all in your stride during June and fight the urge to rebuff changes that happen. It’s often a necessary adjustment to get to where you intend to go, even if it doesn’t directly take you there. Your determination pays off in July, with clarity and insight you will start to see the wood for the trees.
6 Metal Star
After the hard work of previous months, it’s time to really relax and make the most of the summer season. Be truly grateful for all that appears in
your world, no matter how small or insignificant. Keep a positive, wide and open perspective, as July may bring certain changes or challenges, don’t fight – flow.
5 Earth Star
If you play your cards right, June could bring you an unexpected windfall. You have a clearer picture of your intentions and the capacity to focus on what’s required to achieve it. In July take a calm and reflective approach; don’t over-spend even if you feel keen to make the most of the sales.
4 Wood Star
Stay grounded and as static as possible in June; allow things to unfold at their own pace, whilst making the most of your connectivity to others. You may experience some turbulence, but rest assured things will settle down in July, where you will be in a stronger position to make serious decisions.
3 Wood Star
You are still in a phase of growth; opportunities waiting to be had, but make sure you pull up any ‘weeds’ before they get a foothold. Stick to your plans right now, whilst taking regular breaks from your daily routine. Plant your feet on the floor in July and avoid extremes in all forms.
2 Earth Star
It may be nearing summer but spring has metaphorically just sprung for you. It’s all about new beginnings and the onset of your plans. Don’t waste time; make yourself heard and instigate those changes you have been deliberating on. May the force be with you!
1 Water Star
June is a month for getting your ‘house’ in order, car boot the junk and a good de-cluttering. July on the other hand brings you a welcome burst of energy, and you could easily find yourself too busy to hold yourself back with menial household chores.

Windows 7 PC’s & Laptops
Seven seconds is the average time your website has to grab a visitor’s attention. So needless to say it had better be eye catching! But it isn’t all about looking pretty. The other essential function good web design performs is to create a clear journey for the user, says Laura Varey of Jigsaw Communications.
H
ow many times have you come across a stunning website to leave it soon after because you can’t find what you are looking for quickly enough? Behavioural studies have shown how impatient we are when we surf the net, so it is never good news when content and clarity have been sacrificed for style.
In addition, the explosion of the tablet market and other devices with even smaller screens presents another challenge: what will a busy website look like viewed on them, and how functional will it be at those sizes? With only half of all searches now done from desktop computers, and this number decreasing at warp speed, it isn’t a question you can dismiss. If your website has been created using responsive design, or if you have a specific mobile website, it will be fine, but for most SMEs on a limited budget, they are not an option and this is when it is all the more essential to think about creating a design that will be usable across various devices, especially if you also have an e-shop. When it comes to web design, the golden rule is ‘Keep it Simple’ - which is not the same as basic. For example, people will expect the menu to be towards the top or on the left side, which also supports studies that shows that we look at website in an ‘F’ pattern, i.e. our
eyes instinctively scan the top horizontally, then downwards on the left with a short incursion in the middle. The rest is, at first, pretty much ignored. So don’t let your website be too clever for its own good and do have your menus where people expect them. It is also important to remember that we don’t ‘read’ a website linearly like a book. You don’t know how your visitors will enter your site so each one should be put together assuming that they have no knowledge of the rest of your site, and each page should make sense on its own, from a design and content point of view. Then, last but certainly not least, don’t forget the end goal of your website - more business - and make sure that you have a clear call to action on each page, be it ‘Contact us’, ‘Subscribe to our newsletter’ or ‘Post a comment’ for example. For help with your website or marketing, call Laura on 07884 434263 or visit www.jigsawcommunications.co.uk

Smart Money Secrets Pack the right holiday plastic to avoid costly overseas card fees
By Andrew Hagger independent personal finance analyst from www.moneycomms.co.uk
W
ith the summer holiday season in full swing it’s a good time for a quick reminder of the charges you could face when using your plastic abroad. Debit and credit cards may be a secure and convenient way to pay when you’re away from the UK on holiday, but the fees and charges vary considerably, so it’s worth getting to grips with these before you jet off. If you use a credit card overseas most banks will add on a foreign usage fee of around 2.75% to 2.99% to all cash and purchase transactions however there are a few cards offering a better deal. Credit cards from Halifax (Clarity), Metro Bank (Europe only), Saga and Post Office don’t charge any usage fee, thus immediately saving you up to £3.00 per £100 of purchases. Debit cards may be free to use in the UK but that’s not the case when you use them abroad. Debit card transactions also attract a foreign usage fee for
cash withdrawals and purchases (2.75% to 2.99%) plus an additional ATM withdrawal charge typically between £1.50 and £5.00. But the charges that catch most people out are those levied for debit card purchases which are subject to the usage fee above, plus up to an additional £1.50 per transaction regardless of the amount. The worst offenders are Halifax (£1.50 per purchase transaction), Lloyds Bank (£1.00), Santander (£1.25) and TSB (£1.00). If you’re looking for a fee free debit card for using overseas, then take a look at the cards from Norwich & Peterborough Building Society or Metro Bank (Europe only). With the pound looking stronger against the Euro, your summer holiday may work out to be a little less expensive this year, so don’t go and spoil it by shelling out on unnecessary credit and debit card fees. It’s worth spending a couple of minutes to check with your bank what the charges are for your particular plastic before you jet off, rather than getting a nasty shock
when you check your account on your return. At least if you understand the overseas charges, you can adapt your spending pattern accordingly – for example, you don’t want to be making cash withdrawals or purchases of £10 or £20 if you’re going to be hit with fees of £1.50 plus each time. An alternative lower cost option is to consider a prepaid currency card in Euros or US Dollars from the likes of Fair FX, Travelex or CaxtonFX. The cards are chip and PIN secure, accepted wherever you see the MasterCard symbol and offer a cheaper way to pay than many high street debit and credit cards. These currency cards can be loaded from your bank account or your debit card and as such the exchange rate is locked in at the time the cash is transferred to the card, so you’ll know exactly what you’ll be paying for all your holiday transactions.
So as well as packing a good book, your sun tan lotion and your passports, make sure you take a card that’s not going to blow a big hole in your holiday budget!

CARAudiREVIEWS RS 7 Sportback
By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist Twitter @carwriteups www.carwriteups.co.uk
O
Ne of the beNefits of being a motoring journalist is that most press cars come with a tank of fuel. this is necessary for the job you understand. the thought of actually filling up a test vehicle and paying for it with your own wallet sends most hacks recoiling in horror. But very occasionally a car captivates you so much that you really don’t mind throwing fistfuls of cash at it when the free juice runs out. The Audi RS 7 Sportback is one such motor.
time of just 3.9 seconds and a governed 155mph top speed. If you have Autobahn aspirations, then you can increase the maximum speed to 174mph by specifying the optional Dynamic package, and enhance it even further with the Dynamic plus package, which calls a halt to acceleration at 189mph.
Why did it seduce me? Well, the car is simply a God on four wheels. It looks amazing; it delivers more thrills than the fastest rollercoaster you’ve ever been on; it sits four adults in total comfort and it’s made exquisitely. So let’s drill down a bit further into the very essence of this stunning car and look at the root of its monstrous muscle.
Despite performance of this magnitude, the RS 7 Sportback nevertheless manages to keep a firm grip on reality where economy is concerned. Thanks partly to an engine start-stop system it can cover up to 28.8mpg on an average run.
With the help of its two turbochargers, the 4.0-litre TFSI petrol engine delivers its formidable peak power of 553bhp between 5,700 and 6,700 rpm, and top torque of 516lb/ft between 1,750 . and 5,500 rpm. The turbochargers boost pressure, helping to generate incredible accelerative force. This gives the German goliath a phenomenal 0-62mph acceleration
In the RS 7, the Quattro permanent all-wheel drive system enables you to tackle long journeys in all weather without fear of losing control. The car is also pinned securely to the road by an electrically extending rear spoiler providing additional downforce. And when it comes to scrubbing off speed there’ll never be a problem, because behind the huge 20-inch
seven twin-spoke alloy wheels are four massive brakes which provide reassuring stopping power. The interior of the RS 7 Sportback conveys the sporting theme with subtlety, but leaves you in no doubt you’re travelling in a very special Audi flagship. RS logos appear in the dials with their white faces and red needles, on the flat-bottomed three-spoke multifunction steering wheel, in the illuminated entry sills, in the rev counter and in the displays. RS logos are also punched into the front RS super sports seats with their pronounced bolsters, integrated head rests and honeycomb-quilted Valcona leather upholstery. The two-seat rear bench, which is standard for UK models, also has well-defined contours for optimum grip. And, as befits the ultimate incarnation of the A7 Sportback, the RS 7 features a list of standard equipment, and it is possible to upgrade the inventory even further with a portfolio of driver assistance, driver entertainment and driver information systems, including adaptive cruise control, night vision, a Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System with 15 speakers and 1,200 watts of total power. Awesome? I think so. Price: £83,495

Garden Vegetable Risotto And finally: Summer is here...
...a little hit and miss on occasion but here none the less, so this recipe is for enjoying the fruits of our garden labours! The cheese additions at the end of this are optional, but they’re worth adding in if you have them available. And remember, risotto is a loose dish, a little like a rice pudding – or even a lot!
What you need: Ingredients: 150g arborio risotto rice 50g butter 3tbsp olive oil 750ml hot vegetable stock 150 ml dry white wine 1 long strip of lemon zest 250g broad beans (boiled for 1 minute and skinned) 1 bunch asparagus, trimmed and cut into short lengths 100g each of fresh (prepared) runner beans and garden peas 1 onion finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 bay leaf, 1 tbsp chopped fresh mint, and 3-4 sprigs of fresh thyme Sea salt and freshly ground pepper 100g feta cheese, crumbled, and parmesan shavings
49944
Preheat the oven to 200/Gas 6 1. Mix the chopped mint with 2 tbsp of the olive oil, set aside. In a large non stick pan, gently fry the onion in 25g of butter, until softened (5 minutes approx). Stir in the herbs, lemon zest and rice until everything is glistening. 2. Pour the wine into the pan and boil over a medium heat until reduced by half. Next, add the hot stock 1 ladle at a time, stirring thoroughly between each ladleful. The liquid should be almost completely absorbed each time. Leave 1/4 of the stock for later. Cook for approximately 15 minutes until the rice is tender. 3. Meanwhile, in a pan of boiling water, cook the runner beans for 3 minutes. Drain and return to the pan and toss with a little of the remaining butter, and season with black pepper. Set aside. 4. Remove and discard the thyme sprigs, bay leaf, and lemon zest from the rice. Stir in the peas, asparagus, and the broad beans with the remaining stock and cook for 3-4 minutes until tender. 5. Remove from the heat and stir in the feta (if using), then season to taste (the feta can be salty so season after adding this) and finally stir in the last of the butter. 6. To serve: spoon into deep plates, and top with the runner beans. Finally spoon over the minted olive oil and parmesan shavings. You can use chop and change these vegetables to suit what you have in the garden. Or even in the freezer!
