from our region The Art of Life
The Art Of Life, a local voluntary-led support group, helps people living in Diss and the surrounding parishes whose lives are affected by cancer to heal and find meaning through art and complimentary therapies.
Cancer is the toughest fight most of us will ever face but groups like The Art Of Life means that you don’t have to go it alone. Joining a local support group means that you can spend time with people who share, understand and accept your experience. Jay Hurley, the founder, says: “No artistic skills are
necessary. Just a willingness explore your emotions in a different way.”
The group meets monthly on the first Tuesday of each month from 1.30pm until 4pm at Roydon Village Hall, but plans are afoot to offer evening sessions for people with daytime commitments. ow, I get to go to some of the nicest places in pursuit of a lovely lunch, and this was no exception; in fact – thinking back – I don’t remember being in such elegant surroundings in my wanderings over the last four years. I say elegant; add to that smart and fresh and light and spacious but not overpowering or intimidating and you get the picture. Art deco items of furniture added a delightful touch to the place. We were greeted warmly and offered a choice of rooms to eat in: one was the large main dining room prettily laid out for a busy time later in the day. We chose the snug, a separate small room with about four or five tables, and a view over the village green. The drinks that we had ordered at the bar came quickly, and we settled down to study the menu: there was also a specials board in the bar to look at with a few more tempting dishes listed.
(chicken and sausage), and rather bravely (I thought) plumped for a spicy prawn salad. Would there be enough food? Should I order something to go with it? Portion size is always an unknown factor but I need not have worried. The salad was extremely plentiful with a light dressing, and the serving of spiced prawns was generous. What a combination of flavours; sweet, hot, piquant and sharp! Lovely. My friend (who has never uttered the word ‘diet’ in her life) chose chicken supreme with potato cake flavoured with fennel and garlic, all dressed with a light but tasty mustard and peppercorn sauce. This too was beautifully flavoured. There was also a lovely large piece of broccoli that was cooked to perfection, just at that elusive point between raw and overdone.
The pudding menu offered a choice of ice creams; a dark chocolate pot with rum and raisin ice cream; a cheesecake, and a plum tart. I chose the vanilla and mascarpone £6.50 cheesecake with toffee £6.95 sauce, and my friend £11.95 opted for the plum £11.00 and almond tart with £3.60 Chantilly cream. We both paused halfway through to wax lyrical about £40.00 the flavours; the careful combination of the
Drinks (one soft, one wine) Prawn Salad Chicken supreme Deserts Coffees TOTAL Closed on Mondays.
BOTTOM LINE
Being on a diet (when am I not?) I decided against the pie of the day
slightly salty toffee caramel sauce with the vanilla cheesecake, and my friend’s almond sponge sprinkled with pieces of toasted almond, above the succulent sweet plums nestling in the Chantilly cream. And as regular readers will know, I love a big serving of pudding, and neither of these would disappoint. Mine was a generous section, and was unusually deep with a strawberry on top. My friend’s portion was big enough to allow me a spoonful, purely in the interests of research, and lovely it was. We ordered coffee which was freshly made and nice and strong: this came with a chocolate filled biscuit. All the service was prompt and unintrusive, the waitress was cheerful and attentive. I was very impressed with everything I saw; access for the disabled is good, and staff would be on hand to offer assistance. I toyed with the idea of losing my notes about this restaurant so that I would have to go again, but I am not sure Madam Editor would be very pleased with that!

High Society
This summer, Michael Praed makes a welcome return to Norwich Theatre Royal to star in the long-awaited production of High Society. We caught up with him to find out more about his role in the glamorous and stylish show.
T
here is no doubt about it. Michael Praed definitely makes a role his own. From coming to prominence as the ultimate TV outlaw Robin of Sherwood through a foray into the highprofile and high-stakes world of US soap opera into a hugely successful career as a mainstay of hit stage shows, the actor is very passionate about every project he takes on.
And his latest sees him donning the straw boaters and pressed blazers of the high-class social whirl of Thirties America for his latest on-stage role as the ultra-suave and chiselled Dexter Haven in High Society. Taking to the stage on July 1-6, it follows the story of wealthy socialite Tracy Lord who is planning a lavish wedding to her husband-to-be. The trials and tribulations of organising such a huge event packed with the cream of the era’s movers and shakers is made worse when her ex-husband Dexter Haven, played by Michael, appears on the scene. And, if that’s not enough, she also catches the eye of charming reporter Mike Connor, played by West End stalwart (and the new voice of the Neighbours theme) Daniel Boys. Michael says one of the show’s big attractions for him was the score by the legendary Cole Porter, which features songs likes True Love, You’re Sensational and the unforgettable Well, Did You Evah! “The style of Cole Porter’s music is something that I am very familiar with. I have got a passion for it. The songs may have been written 60 years ago but they still have that great style and definition to them.”
And there is no doubt the look of Michael’s roles over his many years of acting has also helped define him. The leather tunics and snug tights of the Eighties TV hit Robin of Sherwood led into the designer garb of Prince Michael of Moldavia in the ultra-camp US soap Dynasty before he was sensationally killed off in a hail of gunfire in one of the best-known (and remembered) smallscreen cliffhangers. Alongside this, he has grown to become a highly sought-after stage star in a host of different roles and enchanted Norwich Theatre Royal audiences during his summer 2011 run as Captain Von Trapp in The Sound Of Music opposite Verity Rushworth, and it was a role (and tour) he particularly enjoyed. Working with a great cast and on a show he really enjoys is also ensuring each performance of High Society is really fresh. As Michael says: “Acting is first and foremost a job and one of the great elements of that is every job is different. You have to look at new ways of doing things and that keeps things fresh. The analogy is that it is like a football match. You may get the same result but every game is different and it is so important to keep that fresh.” As well as working on a show he really enjoys, he admits he is looking forward to returning to Norwich Theatre Royal. Michael said: “I really enjoy performing there. It is a very nice stage and there are fantastic backstage facilities which you don’t always get at other venues. The people of Norfolk are also always very friendly and I have always had a great time when I am there.”

Man of Steel
Man of Steel is produced by Christopher Nolan, director of the Dark Knight trilogy, Memento and Inception, and directed by Zach Snyder, of 300 and Watchmen fame, so it should be good! But do we really need another retelling of the Superman story? After Bryan Singer’s turgid Superman Returns of 2006, has the daddy of all comic book heroes lost his spark? Well, if anyone can lay my doubts to rest it’s the team of Nolan and Snyder. This has a great cast, with Russell Crowe in the role of Superman’s father Jor-El, whilst Kevin Costner and Diane Lane play Jonathan and Martha Kent. Henry Cavill dons the off-colour tights (don’t forget this is going to be a super cool, dark-tinged Superman). I remember him from the lovely adaptation of I Capture the Castle of 2003, though his turn as the Duke of Suffolk in the BBC’s The Tudors should hold him dear in our hearts – from Suffolk to saviour of the world in one giant leap. Release: 14 June See it if you liked: X-Men First Class (2011), The Dark Knight Rises (2013)
Much Ado About Nothing Joss Whedon is the TV genius behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly, who went on to helm the best comic book movie yet made: Marvel’s The Avengers. But whilst he was working on that pop culture masterpiece, Whedon took 12 days out to shoot this modern day version of Shakespeare’s play. Graced by alumni from Whedon’s TV series, this has Amy Acker (from Angel and Dollhouse) as Beatrice and Alexis Denisof (Wesley from Buffy and Angel) as Benedict, with support from Nathan Fillion (Firefly, and now Castle) and Fran Kranz (Dollhouse) amongst others. Given Whedon’s gift for fast-paced wise-cracking ensemble pieces, this could be the perfect antidote to all these CGI mashups filling the multiplexes. Release: 14 June See it if you liked: Much Ado About Nothing (1993), Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1996-2003)
After Earth A sci-fi action thriller starring father and son team Will and Jaden Smith, this is directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Auteur of the great The Sixth Sense and the excellent Unbreakable and The Village, Shyamalan’s last film was the woeful The Last Airbender, a mistaken attempt to break away from his twisty, suspenseful mood pieces. When a space mission goes wrong and father and son crash-land on a hostile, deadly planet, they are shocked to discover that it is, in fact, planet Earth. Are You a Responsible Pet Owner?
D
id you know that as of 2016, every dog owner in England will have to microchip their animal? This new compulsory legislation comes under plans intended to reduce the number of strays in the UK.
Microchipping is a simple and inexpensive solution that gives pet owners peace of mind. It allows vets to locate the owners of a stray dog if one is brought into the practice. It’s also much easier to trace and find a stolen dog.
The Old Golfhouse Veterinary Group are now running a special offer whereby you can microchip your dog for the special price of £9.99 including VAT. To ensure your other pets don’t miss out, the offer applies to cats and rabbits as well. The Old Golfhouse Veterinary Group are due to attend the Wayland Show on Sunday 4th August and will be microchipping dogs there for the same price, so please come and visit our stand.
The microchip will be coded with owners’ details, enabling vets to locate the owners if a dog is found. Owners who do not comply could face fines of up to £500.
Alternatively, for further information or to make an appointment call The Old Golfhouse Veterinary Group on (Watton) 01953 881415 or (Attleborough) 01953 451100.
An incredible amount of taxpayers’ money - £57million per year – is spent on caring for and rehoming stray dogs. The new ruling will hopefully cut this figure dramatically and save over 100,000 dogs from being abandoned and left homeless.
The Old Golfhouse Veterinary Group Attleborough branch has moved! The Attleborough branch of The Old Golfhouse Veterinary Group has moved just down to the end of Edenside Lane. The new practice is open as normal and offers clients a better service including in-house routine operations.
We hope to see you there!

Garden Jottings from Ken
ees are strange creatures, small, stripy and according to scientists some are incapable of flying (what do they know!) But these non-aggressive, busy little insects are fighting a battle for survival. Worldwide bee populations are in steep decline, and if they go, we may not be far behind because hungry mankind and much of the natural food-chain relies on them for the pollination of plants. Imagine the cost and difficulty of mechanically transferring pollen across thousands of flowers in a blossoming orchard... The price of an apple pie or a glass of juice would be up there with wild truffles and caviar! Your garden can become a haven for all kinds of different bees and other beneficial insects. All you need to do to help them is provide a good source of food and they will reward you with their unique services. Nectar and pollen are the key attractions to encourage them to visit and work for you, and like birds, if the food is in constant supply they will keep coming back for more. So it’s important to plan a succession of floral feasts to stop them from going hungry. Bees, like planes, burn a lot of energy flying about and keeping their colonies alive, so refuelling needs to be a quick and simple process. By providing single, open-centred flowers, they’ll dip
into the nectar easily (just like an open bag of chips), whereas double and complicated blooms may look enticing and be full of food but they will struggle or be unable to unwrap the contents.
It’s not the size of a garden that matters, it’s having the right plants growing. Even a simple tub of herbs such as mint, thyme and rosemary, or a few bold clumps of lavenders will help bees along. To get your garden buzzing, try planting members of the daisy family such as rudbeckia, echinacea, leucanthemum, aster or tanacetum, mix these with thistle-like cirsium, eryngium, echinops or teasels plus veronica, monarda, alcea (hollyhock), scabious or foxgloves to create an amazingly colourful herbaceous border for you and the bees. If space allows, grove flowering shrubs including cotoneaster, pyracantha and Viburnam opulus (guilder rose) will not only help your pollinating partners, but will also give wild birds a treat in the autumn with their berries. Without a doubt, one of the best bee plants are heathers, a good selection will provide blooms at any time of year, which can be particularly important in spring when bees start to forage on the brighter days. Plant with crocuses and wild primroses to give an added early boost. All of the above plants and many other suitable choices are available from us, plus artificial hotels to help you look after beneficial insects in your garden, after all, we’d ‘bee’ lost without them!
Cheers, Ken

Which Wood To Burn?
by Joan Garnham, Waveney Tree Specialists
L
ots of village people are lucky enough to have a fireplace or wood burner but it can be difficult to choose which wood to burn, so here are my top tips: It is better to buy wood by volume rather than weight. 35–60% of the weight of freshly felled wood is water. Poplar is one of the wettest and ash the driest. Wet, green wood produces steam and less heat than dry, seasoned wood and can give a build up of tars in the chimney. Trees felled during the spring and summer will have higher moisture content than those felled in the autumn or winter and therefore require longer seasoning.
You can tell if a log is seasoned because the bark will come away in your hand and there will be splits across the grain. The denser and heavier the seasoned wood, the more heat it will give. Soft light woods like pine burn quickly and make good kindling. All fruit woods burn well and give a lovely scent. Beware of Larch, Scots Pine and Horse Chestnut – they spit so they are not good for an open fire. If you plan on splitting your own logs, do it when it’s green – it is much easier. The optimum size is about 10cm across. Stack the logs with the bark on to keep them dry. The wood pile does not need to be covered but stacked under an open
‘lean to’ works well. If you’re superstitious, then beware of apple wood! Tradition tells us that it is unlucky, whilst elder lets the devil in. For a luckier wood, try London Plane, known as the Lord’s Cross because it bleeds red. Waveney Trees Specialists do not sell fire wood but I hope we have given you a few tips for next winter. Now is the time to start collecting and stacking!

Good News for the Housing Market Good news is not often reported these days. It is true to say that the economy, and the housing market in particular, have been struggling for some time. Sadly for the last few years the historical ‘surge’ of activity during springtime has not been, sadly, very noticeable.
This year it’s different – the buyers are out in droves and we are busy with offers and sales. There has been a surprising amount of activity from buyers! Not just local buyers but also buyers from other parts of our country. The market is very active and it’s refreshing to see properties ‘under offer’ within their initial marketing period. Our problem at the moment is not selling property – but more so finding property to sell. We have such a percentage of stock go ‘under offer’, we urgently need more homes to sell. Perhaps George Osborne has helped matters by working with the Home Builders Federation and the Council of Mortgage Lenders. The NewBuy scheme enables purchasers to put down a 5% deposit on a newly built home, much less than some banks now demand. The chancellor also announced a new mortgage guarantee, which will dramatically increase the availability of loans. It extends the NewBuy Guarantee scheme to include older houses as well as new-builds and covers mortgages up to £600,000.
Whilst these steps may help in part, our view is that the market has finally settled and newly listed properties, advertised at the right price, are getting viewings and offers. The market is certainly buoyant with activity at the moment. These new schemes from the government have had some impact but the marketing of property at a realistic and achievable price is critical to bringing in viewers and offers. An enthusiastic description and professional photographs are also key to attracting buyers, which we are told we do very well. If you’re thinking of selling please get in contact with us. We are a small but highly effective and friendly business who punch well above our weight on the internet – and frankly, it’s the internet where your buyer will find your home. We really do offer a personalised service with straightforward advice and we are always available - even out of hours. We have had abundant positive feedback from sellers and buyers alike about the benefits of being able to contact an agent when the working day has freed them the time to deal with their move.
If you are currently selling your home with another agent and you’ve been ‘lost amongst the many’ and haven’t had the results or the service you require – please call Andrew or Dawn to see what a different service we offer. Expectations When did you last feel let down by an experience you had high hopes for? For me it was Euro-Disney. Not because it was eye wateringly expensive, or that we spent hours queuing for rides that lasted seconds; nope, it was the service. Miserable, surly and nobody really cared! The adverts promised “an amazing and different magical experience”. The reality was very different. In business, if you set an expectation you should have ability to deliver it. Failure means unhappy customers and lost chances to gain future business by recommendation. ‘The ability to deliver’ means you need the right skills and technology to fulfil your promise but to really get it right requires a motivation and culture to want to exceed customers’ expectations.
signed an estate agents contract felt as their levels of excitement went up the agents interest went down and worse, because under a timed contract it’s impossible to seek better service elsewhere. Solution: House Revolution has no contract. We want to work harder. Exceeding customers’ expectations is one of the fundamental reasons why House Revolution was created. The business is built from the bottom up in such a way as to make sure you are looked after from the point of valuation to the handover of keys. Nothing is hidden. Travellers’ Tales
In the second of a series of five articles, Sarah Doig looks at the account written by Celia Fiennes, who travelled around the region on horseback in the 1690s
C
elia Fiennes was the daughter of a former colonel in Oliver Cromwell’s New Model Army and was brought up near Salisbury. When Celia was still a young woman, she embarked on a remarkable series of journeys on horseback, eventually covering every county in England. Celia was accompanied on some journeys by her mother or her sister, although for other journeys further from home, such as East Anglia, she took only servants. Celia worked up the notes she made into a travel memoir in 1702, which was published some time after her death. It provides a vivid portrait of a countryside with few and primitive roads, although signposts were starting to appear.
During her travels, Celia sought out new buildings, and new developments in agriculture and industry. It appears that she had mixed feelings about what she saw in Ipswich, which she described as “ a very clean town... [although] ...the town looks a little disregarded”. Visiting the market on Saturday she wrote: “ they sold their Butter by ye pinte 20 ounces for 6 pence and often for 5d or 4d ; they make it up in a Mold just in the shape of a pinte pot and so sell it”.
Leaving Norwich, Celia rode on to Wymondham where she commented on an early form of toll road: “Ye Road on ye Causey [causeway] was in many places full of holes tho’ its secured by a barr at which passengers pay a penny a horse in order to the mending ye way, for all about is not to be Rode on Unless its a very dry summer”. She continues: “Thence we went mostly through Lanes where you meete ye ordinary people knitting 4 or 5 in a Company under the hedges”. Passing through Attleborough Celia was “still finding the Country full of spinners and Knitters”. “There is only the ruines of ye abby walls and the fine gate at the Entrance that remaines-stone, well Carv’d”. Bury St Edmunds is clearly recognisable from Celia Fiennes’ description, over three centuries ago, of the abbey ruins and the Abbeygate. However, even then it appears that Bury had realised that it could make money from the tourists, because Celia ends her account of her visit by observing: “so much Company Living in the town makes provision scarce and dear: however its a good Excuse to raise the Reckoning on strangers”! Abbeygate, Bury St. Edmunds
Norwich clearly impressed Celia: “The streetes are all well pitch’d with small stones and very clean, and many very broad streetes”. She also observed at firsthand the industry which provided employment for literally thousands of the city’s inhabitants: “Ye Crapes, Callimancos and damaskes which is ye whole business of the place. Indeed they are arrived to a great perfection in worke, so fine and thinn and glossy; their pieces are 27 yards in Length and their price is from 30 shillings to 3 pound as they are in ffineness. A man can weave 13 yards a day, I saw some weaveing; they are all employ’d in spinning, knitting weaveing, dying, scouring or bleaching stuffs”. A 17th century weaver
Sarah Doig offers a family, house & local history research service (www.ancestral-heritage.co.uk). In the next issue, Sarah follows in the footsteps of Daniel Defoe who wrote an account of his travels around East Anglia in 1722.

Discovering the Waveney Valley David Seddon explores the new and improved walking trails of the Waveney Valley The Waveney River In his book ‘a Tour thro’ the Whole Island of Great Britain, Daniel Defoe – author of ‘Robinson Crusoe’ – wrote in 1724: ‘The River Waveney is a considerable river, and of a deep and full channel, navigable for large barges as high as Beccles. It runs for a course of about fifty miles, between the two counties of Suffolk and Norfolk, as a boundary to both.’ I hesitate to say it divides Norfolk and Suffolk, but it runs from west to east, between the villages of Redgrave in Suffolk and South Lopham in Norfolk, through the broads, before sweeping past Burgh Castle into Breydon Water to merge with the Yare, and from there, making its entry into Great Yarmouth and the North Sea. The Waveney Valley contains a number of historic market towns, including Diss, Scole, Harleston, Bungay and Beccles, and numerous attractive small villages, many of which retain strong community traditions, local shops and pubs. But it is a predominantly rural area, attracting visitors to its scenery, wildlife and birds, and particularly its nature reserves and conservation areas, as well as for its fishing and sailing. Many come to walk, and the valley now boasts an extensive network of footpaths, trails and longer routes. Two of these have been newly refurbished. The Angles Way The 93 mile long Angles Way is described by some as ‘the best waterside walk in Britain’ and follows the entire path of the Waveney from source to sea. The path begins in unspoilt rural lands among ancient hedgerows, heathlands, farmlands and wetlands, meandering and growing past architectural relics, bustling villages and through market towns full of history and culture. For seekers of rich biodiversity, Angles Way is teaming with common and rare species
of flora and fauna, passing through not one, but five Suffolk Wildlife Nature Reserves. The walk contains many shorter and longer trails to enjoy – visit www.norfolk.gov.uk/trails for more information and maps. Boudicca’s Way One of the Waveney Valley’s hidden gems, the award-winning Boudicca Way, runs for 36 miles between Diss and Norwich. The Way is named after the legendary warrior queen of the Iceni, whose tribes once inhabited the area, and passes through the beautiful, unspoilt rural countryside of South Norfolk and the Waveney Valley. The route has recently been given a new lease of life by a voluntary and small business community project, headed up by local businessman Steve Falvey. Steve successfully secured funding to install new sign posts, improve the footpath and re guide the route to pass through picturesque villages such as Shotesham. The changes have been so It’s more than a successful, that walk! Enjoy all of Lonely Planet Traveller Magazine this along the way: has recently named Boudicca Way as • Stunning scenery and wildlife one of the Top 30 • Local food and drink Travel Secrets of • Outdoor activities the World! • History and architecture If you would like to try the trail, visit www.boudiccaway. co.uk for maps and information about local businesses along the way.

Ancient Oriental Astrology
FOR A MODERN LIFE Hello again! I hope you found my last article informative. Below is your 9 Star Ki forecast for June and July.
9 Fire Star With the buzz that’s surrounding you right now, you may feel inclined to spend, spend, spend, with socialising high on your list of activities. Keep your budget in check and in July, avoid stretching your resources too thinly. 8 Earth Star Although recent upheavals have left you feeling a little out of touch, June and July bring a renewed sense of purpose and a more focussed approach to your home and work life. You could also be reaping the rewards of your recent hard work, so take time out in July and RELAX! 7 Metal Star Your new sense of
joy and relaxed approach to life at the moment can be infectious to those around you. Take time out in June however and recharge your batteries, stay still and calm, let things happen while you focus on the now. July brings new clarity and purpose to your work, but don’t get too caught up in details.
6 Metal Star You have been
giving all of yourself to everything you do recently. Your pride and dedication will pay huge dividends, so don’t retreat or change course yet! If you feel yourself becoming rigid, particularly in July, take a few days off and be creative or spontaneous.
5 Earth Star The next couple of months are about ‘growth’; it’s time to start progressing your plans and desires. Don’t hold back in June, if it feels right, go for it! Use this time to your advantage as the wind blows in your sails giving you motivation and creativity. If you feel run down at all, STOP, take a break and give yourself time-out. 4 Wood Star
You are gathering speed generally, as things around you take shape. Even though you may feel hesitant in June about family affairs and your future, be patient, get the ship into shape and allow yourself some time to prepare for a busy July. Summer brings with it a whole host of opportunities heading your way; are you ready and fit to take on those challenges?
3 Wood Star The beginning of the summer could be a quiet one, compared to the start of the year. It’s a time to step back and look at your plans; are they working? Do they need changing? Have a deep and philosophical inner conversation and open yourself up to any life changes that may appear in July. 2 Earth Star
June could provide a much-needed social event, and with a focus on
your looks and attire there may well be an amorous involvement too! You will feel uplifted in mind and spirit, illuminated and altogether passionate about what you hold dear to your heart. In contrast, July is about an internal adventure, as you are more inclined to develop your spiritual side.
1 Water Star
Even though you feel you have broken the back of the project you are currently deeply involved in, there is still quite a way to climb. Your strength and endurance will pay off, so stick with it and don’t flinch or get side-tracked. July sees you under the spotlight, and with luck on your side, this is where you get noticed and remembered for all your hard work.

No Sew Summer Bunting
If you want to make your own bunting but find the idea of using a sewing machine rather daunting we’ve got the perfect solution! 2. Cut your mending tape in half, along its length. You now have two metres of tape, each 19mm wide. Take one length of tape and fold it in half along 7 inches of its length. The bonded tape makes the tie for your bunting.
1. Measure out your flags (7 inches wide by 9 inch drop). You will need three flags per pattern so nine flags in total. Cut them out with crimping scissors, this stops your material from unravelling.
You will need… • three contrasting materials • textile & crimping scissors •mending tape (38mm by 1m) • ruler & pencil • iron & ironing board

A Taste
of Summer
Once again, we have two ‘to die for’ recipes for this edition. One is a wonderfully refreshing alternative dip to any of the usual suspects you’ll find on the supermarket shelves, and the other is a twist on a British summertime classic. Both key ingredients for these summer recipes are readily available on our very own doorsteps. So ‘pick your own’ and then enjoy as follows...
Broad Bean and Dill ‘Hummus’ Dip
Baked Strawberries with Honey Whipped Cream
INGREDIENTS
1.6kg broad beans in their pods Fresh dill (about a handful) 4 tbsp olive oil Juice of 1 lemon (seasoning as required)
1. Pod the beans and drop them all into a pan of boiling water until tender – 7 minutes or so. 2. Drain and then blitz in a food processor until you get a coarse puree. Add seasoning, the lemon juice and olive oil. Blitz again until smooth and bright green!
Serve in a bowl, with a little more olive oil poured over. Try with crusty bread or hot pittas.
You really do need ripe English strawberries for this recipe – any others (e.g. flown in from afar) will just be too short of taste. Preheat your oven to 1900C/ gas mark 5 1. In an ovenproof frying pan, melt the butter and stir in the sugar. Toss in the strawberries and coat in the mix. 2. Put the pan in the oven for 10 minutes, turning the strawberries over half way through. 3. While the strawberries are baking whip the cream into soft peaks, and then fold through the honey and vanilla. Dollop into English Strawberries – hulled four bowls. 4. Remove the strawberries 3 tbsp brown sugar from the oven and spoon 200ml of whipping or double cream into the bowls. Make sure A good knob of butter (unsalted) not to waste the syrupy Vanilla essence, or extract – just a splash juices and drizzle these over. Add mint leaves and tuck in! Mint leaves for garnish

Health Q&A
It’s that time of year when I start preparing my garden for the summer months ahead. How can I avoid back pain with gardening? Clare Carrick, chartered physiotherapist at Back in Motion says: “Gardening provides plenty of opportunities for healthy exercise in the fresh air but it is easy to overdo things, as prolonged activity of a repetitive nature uses only one set of muscles. By changing jobs frequently you can exercise different set of muscles. For example, a short spell of hoeing weeds should be followed by something gentler like pricking out seedlings while sitting at a bench. It is recommended to do ‘a little and often’. By planning gardening jobs carefully you can avoid unnecessary strain on joints. If problems with legs makes walking is difficult, try to avoid too many journeys up and down the garden. Take all you need in one go. Conversely, if you need to protect your shoulders, elbows and wrists it is better to make several trips carrying a small amount each time.”

How to Stay Motivated
So many people know that they should be exercising but really struggle to get motivated. One of the simplest ways to get you moving is to work out with other people.
If you would like more information on healthy eating, gym memberships, exercise classes or personal training please do not hesitate to contact Mick Glynn at MG Fitness Studio.

Classes are a good way of keeping momentum and many people find working out with people with similar goals is rewarding and fun.
Or finally you could train with a partner; this could be a husband, wife, family member or friend. If you arrange a day and time to work out but do not show up you’re letting your friend down. Also when one of you starts to see results it will motivate and inspire the other.
Group training is also a popular way to train in small, personal groups of about 4 people.

Pilates for Back Pain
I
f you suffer from back pain, as millions of us do, you may have been recommended a Pilates class. Pilates is a series of gentle exercises that improve physical strength and flexibility and classes are particularly good for back problems because the exercises strengthen the muscles that support the spine. Pilates is now thought to be practised by an estimated one million Britons and has become extremely popular since the endorsement of celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Pippa Middleton. However, Clare Carrick, physiotherapist and founder of the Back in Motion group of clinics in Norfolk, expresses a note of caution when choosing the right Pilates class. “If exercises are carried out incorrectly they can put excess strain on the spine and joints and cause existing conditions to deteriorate” says Clare. “Any exercise needs to be beneficial, whatever your aims, so if it’s carried
out with a great deal of supervision and medical assessment then you are more likely to achieve your goals” she adds. Back in Motion offers a programme of Clinical Pilates classes and individual sessions, alongside physiotherapy and places rehabilitation at the heart of its philosophy. Small classes are taught by qualified Chartered Physiotherapists and progress is monitored closely. The approach at Back in Motion is all about the long term rather than a quick-fix and Back in Motion makes the important distinction between those looking for a fitness plan and those who are looking for rehabilitation after surgery or injury with their new extensive timetable structure. Back in Motion was founded in 2003 and now has clinics in Wymondham, Diss, North Walsham and Norwich with future clinics in the planning. Clare is passionate about the benefits of Clinical Pilates and physiotherapy in helping us all live happier and healthier lives.

REFRESHING WATERS
Quilter’s talent becomes a living message Norfolk journalist, Sandie Shirley, spotlights the inspiring stories of men and women from the region and beyond that have seen them reach for victory. For more stories visit: www.refreshingwaters.co.uk
J
ackie Smith’s quilts are colourful, pictorial landmarks of her journey with God and a living message for others at cathedrals and art galleries across the UK. With a developing talent for textiles, she has charted the contours of her faith through heartache, trial and joy. She is also a popular speaker and passes on her skills through various workshops.
Her quilt making took a new direction when she moved to Wales and saw the breathtaking Snowdon scenery from the manse where she lived. The area was also steeped in Celtic spirituality and she felt the pilgrimage treks were a reflection of her own life journey. It soon became the focus for her first spiritual quilt called ‘Pereindota’ with Celtic symbols of Church and eternity and the misty grey colours of Wales.
Jackie’s labour of love began over three decades ago when she joined neighbouring quilt makers at the chapel near her former Dorset home. She helped make 24 quilts and she became the proud owner of two of them. Although she moved to Southampton and Wales, the Isle of Wight and Norfolk, when her husband became a Methodist minister, Jackie’s quilt making continued. She practised her art and found a new, alternative niche for her faith that has opened doorways at various exhibitions across the country.
“I have always found God in creation,” says Jackie who has since made eight quilts depicting creation, which have also inspired some accompanying prose. Now she is busy experimenting with a quilted journal and quilting trees in a new ‘Revelation’ series “to explore a gradual revealing of God alongside the heartache of being a distance carer for my daughter who suffers mental health problems,” says Jackie. The dark, winter artistry will change,
as the series unfolds with joy and hope. “During the darkness God takes us through our trials and temptations and when we get to rock bottom we discover that the rock is God, as we are rooted in him,” says the textile artist who found great help through the MIND Carer Support service.
“I can usually picture the completed quilts in my mind’s eye but they often change before I finish,” says Jackie who spends a year planning each design. Worked with silk, metallic, sheer, velvet and brocade fabrics, most are also painted, dyed and sewn by hand and machine. “People quite often see things that I have not seen as the quilts say something to them and that is what they are about,” says Jackie from Coney Weston near Thetford.

Your ISA allowance –
I
A WASTED OPPORTUNITY?
n the current environment of low interest rates, low economic growth and modest but persistent inflation, savers and investors need to make the most of every opportunity to maximise the returns on their money. Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) represent just such an opportunity; yet many people are wasting the valuable tax-saving advantages and investment potential provided by their annual ISA allowance. ISAs were introduced by the government in 1999 to encourage people to save and invest for their future in a tax-efficient way. For many years the amount that could be invested in an ISA each tax year was limited to £7,000. But this has gradually increased and from 6 April it will increase to £11,520. The catch with the annual ISA allowance is that if you don’t use it, you lose it. There are two types of ISA: Cash ISAs are savings accounts where the interest is paid tax-free and Stocks & Shares ISAs, as the name suggests, that allow investment into a wider range of stock market and other financial instruments. The attraction of a Stocks & Shares ISA is that both income and capital gains attract no further tax liability. However, there are restrictions on how much can be invested in each type. The full annual allowance can be invested in a Stocks & Shares ISA, but only half the allowance - £5,640 this year – can be saved in a Cash ISA, although the balance of the allowance can still be invested in a Stocks & Shares version. Tax benefits provided by ISAs are best maximised by investing for the long term in assets capable of achieving capital growth and rising income. The likelihood is that interest rates will remain very low for a number of years to come and, regrettably, savers cannot even be sure that their Cash ISA account is achieving a better rate than a standard deposit account. ISA allowances might be better utilised by investing in a diversified portfolio of assets that have the scope to deliver higher levels of income and long-term capital gains. Those who have already built up significant ISA funds might be able to improve the income and capital returns on offer. All too often, people do not review their ISA portfolio strategy frequently enough. How are the investment managers performing? Is the asset mix, geographic spread or fund choice still right for them?
Can they improve the income-generating potential of their ISA portfolio? Are they happy with the service they’re receiving? A thorough review of an ISA portfolio by an experienced wealth manager can ensure that it is appropriately structured and diversified to help achieve immediate or future financial goals. As a final thought, parents, grandparents, and indeed anyone who might want to help a child build capital for his or her future, should not overlook Junior ISAs, which were introduced in November 2011 to give under-18s a similar tax-efficient savings opportunity. The value of an ISA with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than you invested. An investment in a Stocks and Shares ISA will not provide the same security of capital associated with a Cash ISA. The favourable tax treatment of ISAs may not be maintained in the future and is subject to changes in legislation.

Smart Money Secrets Make the most of your tax free savings allowance
W
Andrew Hagger Money expert from www.moneycomms.co.uk
ith the new tax year just underway, it’s a good time to consider a suitable home for your tax free savings.
The overall ISA limit increased from £11,280 to £11,520 from 6 April 2013, and for cash based tax free savings accounts the new allowance is up by £120 to £5,760 per person. Should I consider investing in a Stocks and Shares ISA to get a better return? At a time when cash savings rates are at rock bottom, there is understandably a bigger temptation to opt for stock market based ISA investments in search of a better return.
However before committing your funds it is sensible to speak to an Independent Financial Adviser to understand the costs, risks and the vast choice of products. Equity (Stocks & Shares) based products are considered a longer term investment and not suitable if you want instant access to your cash. You can choose to invest a lump sum or drip feed your investment on a monthly basis and there are a wide range of products with different levels of risk, so unless you’re an experienced investor, it’s definitely worth getting some professional guidance. Cash ISA – Fixed rate or Variable rate? It’s a tough call whether to opt for a variable rate or a fixed rate account this year. The best 1 year fixed rate ISA currently pays less than the top variable rate account,
Before you sign up for a new ISA, it’s worth considering the choices out there and which account may be best suited to you, but with a vast array of ISA terms and conditions, you may find following checklist helpful, when you speak to your bank or building society. Is the interest rate variable or fixed? Does the ISA allow you to transfer in previous years ISA balances? Does the interest rate include a bonus? – if yes make a diary note to switch when it expires Is interest paid monthly or annually? Is the interest rate only available to existing customers? Do you have to purchase another financial product (i.e. Equity based investment) to qualify for this rate?
It’s not often you get a chance to legally keep the taxman away from your savings interest, so make sure you make full use of your allowance if you can. however with experts predicting a further decline in savings rates over the next 12 months, the fixed rate deal may turn out to be the more rewarding option over time.

Meet The Experts
This issue, we asked husband-and-wife team Martin and Cathy Purvey about their etyres business. If you need new tyres and don’t want the hassle of having to drive to a garage, they’re here to make your life easier. What is unique about etyres? We travel to the customer. It doesn’t matter if they are in a rural area or a busy high street, we can fit their tyres at their home or work. We bring the tyre depot to their door and do everything possible to fit in with their busy schedules. What has made your business a success? I think it’s down to offering highly competitive prices combined with a convenient mobile fitting service. Our customers love the fact that we
go to them to fit their new tyres. This is particularly useful in rural areas, where a garage can be a long drive away. Do you offer many different types of tyres? We offer a wide range of tyres to suit all budgets, including economy, mid-range and premium brands, such as Bridgestone and Michelin. We also carry out puncture repairs and supply and fit car batteries.
Can you help with caravans and motorhomes as well? etyres is very popular with caravan and motorhome owners, because we can fit tyres on their doorstep or at their storage site, saving them the trouble of having to manoeuvre their vehicle into a tight space at a garage. We are also stockists of Tyron Brands. For more information or to place an order go online to etyres.co.uk or call the local experts on 01953 630063 for help and impartial advice.
Looking for a reliable caravan and motorhome service engineer? • Complete on site breakdown service available 7 days a week • Indoor caravan storage facility • Fully insured, friendly, no fuss services and repairs at your home • Motor Movers and other accessories fitted

CAR REVIEWS Subaru XV 2.0D SE Lux Premium
By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist Twitter: @carwriteups - www.carwriteups.co.uk
T
HE DOWN-TO-EARTH Subaru XV unites city style with urban and offroad ability. It also has another ace up its sleeve – it’s the safest model in its class for child occupant protection. Every XV is equipped with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and a Boxer engine – ensuring an engaging and dependable drive in all conditions. Despite a ground clearance of 220mm, the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) offers a low centre of gravity, which aids its “onroad” grip, and helps it to achieve 0-62mph in 9.3 seconds. The 2.0 diesel XV, on test here, is likely to be the best-selling model, offering class-leading fuel economy of 50.4mpg on the combined cycle, while emitting 146g/km of CO2.
The car comes fully loaded with a standard kit list sure to make many premium compact SUV makers feel embarrassed. You can expect to find traction control, Subaru Vehicle Dynamics Control (SVDC), front, side, curtain and knee airbags, 17-inch alloy wheels, daytime LED running lights and automatic air conditioning. The flagship SE Lux Premium model also comes with cruise control, a rear-view camera, Bluetooth functionality and USB/ iPod connectivity. And if that’s not enough, a sunroof, Keyless Smart Entry, push-button start, leather seats and satellite navigation are thrown in too. If SUVs do it for you, this could be one to consider. A couple of things let the Scooby down though: some cheap interior plastics and a heavy
