Editor’s Letter Been reminiscing this week as this edition celebrates our 5th Birthday in publishing! WOW, what a long way we’ve come, from producing and delivering 5,000 magazines every issue back in 2008 to the massive 45,000 copies each issue today (and we’re still growing!) With the help of my calculator I’ve worked out that in the last 5 years we’ve produced 570,000 fabulous magazines; all packed full of local and interesting content. Local Busker Takes Music Career to New Heights A Norwich busker has launched his first ever music video, after a brutal assault back in December. Felix Simpson was severely assaulted just before Christmas last year, resulting in a broken jaw that had to be wired shut meaning he was unable to sing. However, during this time, Felix was even more motivated to push his music career to new heights. Felix, who lives in Diss and is a cousin of Charlie Simpson (Busted), is a regular busker of the city and gigs around the Norfolk and Suffolk area. To celebrate his 21st birthday, Felix decided to record his first ever music video ‘Still Tied’, which you can watch on YouTube.

Just over one year on, this splendid hotel and restaurant offers a dining experience with a real difference, a `German Special’ is always available on the menu and varies from one month to the next. Schweins Haxe, Schnitzel, Sauerkraut and Pretzel dumplings are just some of the examples to be seen. Seasonal food locally sourced and freshly prepared is at the heart of the menu. Meat is supplied by a local butcher, who being a fifth generation farmer, home rears the meat they supply. Fish is sourced from King’s Lynn. The Bavarian couple have just overseen a complete transformation of the main dining room, which showcases the fine architecture of this beautiful Georgian interior. The refurbishment continues throughout the rest of the hotel.

t’s August and the seaside is calling; time to pack the bucket and spade, the sun cream, the wet wipes… but if you go to Dunwich you can forget the picnic. What could be better than beachcombing in the morning, fish and chips for lunch, and a wander around what’s left of Dunwich in the afternoon, calling in at the museum, and then the Ship Inn for a drink on the way back to the car? We went last week on a cool, but thankfully dry day, as part of a coach tour with Spratts Coaches. The Flora Tea Room does coach trips brilliantly; the service is fast and accurate, and jolly. The proprietor enters the coach immediately on arrival and takes the order – cod, haddock and plaice, all with chips and a range of salads. We then made our leisurely way into the bright cheery tea room and took our reserved seats. First came the cup of tea or coffee, (oh, thank you for that!) then the main attraction, the fish and chips. I was pleased to see that the portion of chips was not ridiculously large as sometimes is the case and for those of a hungrier disposition seconds were soon brought round. There was bread and butter on the table for those who can’t resist

a chip buttie, and various sauces (in sachets) were offered with the added service of having the end opened neatly with a pair of scissors. Top-ups of tea and coffee were brought round, followed by the sweet, which was fruit salad and ice cream. This set menu is reserved for coach parties and costs £10.50 per person – but do book in advance; the tea room seats over 100 people but fills up remarkably quickly. For individual diners, a plate of cod and chips is £8.95, and desserts are about a fiver each. The choice of food is more varied; I bumped into a long lost friend there enjoying smoked mackerel which he declared was delicious. There is a variety of burgers and salads and a children’s menu caters for the kids. There is also a ‘specials board’ each day. It’s a long time since I saw ‘Sherry triﬂe’ and ‘Knickerbocker Glory’ on a café menu. Drinks include Earl Grey tea, coffee, cappuccino and hot chocolate. On a really nice day you might like to eat outside on the tables provided. The café is dog friendly; the car park and toilets are free but donations to local charities are welcome. This place is such a welcome blast from the past: apart from spotting the great golf ball of Sizewell Nuclear Power station in

the distance, through the haze, I could have believed that I had been transported back to the mid-1950s: only the smell of Jeyes ﬂuid was missing! Most of Dunwich (including 12 churches) is now under the sea, and you can find out all about this at the museum. Here you will find a detailed model of the original town with lines drawn across it to show its demise. Upstairs there is a short film show; whist the ground ﬂoor houses various ancient artefacts. This again is free (donations welcome) as is the Greyfriars friary and cliff top woodland where you can wander amongst the ruins of this important ancient monument. For one day, there is almost too much to do! Open from March to the end of November.

The Lone Ranger

Matt Damon in full action-man mode and the always excellent Jodie Foster star in this sci-fi actioner. Set in the year 2154, the wealthy characters of this film live in a utopian metropolis, orbiting the earth, while the residents of earth suffer hardship and disease. It’s up to Damon’s character, Max, to bring the two worlds together in his battle to enter Elysium. Writer-director Neill Blomkamp had a breakout hit with South African sci-fi drama District 9, with its powerful real world parallels and Elysium is set to be another allegorical tale. Following the success of Avatar, studios have been hoping that sci-fi would appeal to a broader audience, but apart from Star Trek the more off beat stories ies - such as Tom Cruise’s Oblivion, Will Smith’s After Earth and even Ridley dle Sc Scott’s’s Prometheus - are finding it hard to break out into more general audience acceptance. It still takes a strong story to draw us in and make us care – could this be it?

The World’s End Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright complete their disparate ‘blood and ice cream’ trilogy of comedy shockers. A pub crawl, robots and middle age threaten to bring the world to an end and only our unlikely heroes can save the day. Rosamund Pike and Martin Freeman add strong support. It’s not always easy to pinpoint why some films work and others don’t - film-making is a collaborative process and not always the auteur-led art form film critics would like to pretend. But looking at the 4th Pirates of the Caribbean movie, and why it did not gel as well as the first three, you have one underlying reason (apart from the absence of Keira and Orlando of course): the replacement of director Gore Verbinsk Apart from the Verbinski. original trilogy, Verbinski has prov himself with quirky proven fare such as The Mexican and The Weather Man. So it is good news that he has helmed Johnny Depp’s lat weirdfest The Lone latest Ra Ranger, which is based on the classic TV series. This film aims to bring the western genre genr up to date for a new audience. Depp, who plays Indian chieftain Tonto, is looking for a hit after Tim Burton’s underwhelming Dark Shadows last year, let’s hope this is it!

Hairspray comes to Norwich

Mark Benton is an actor with a varied CV. Fresh from playing popular teacher ‘Chalky’ White on the BBC’s Waterloo Road, he is now donning a fat suit, make-up and a wig to play Edna Turnblad in Hairspray.

head of taking on the (literally) largerthan-life role at Norwich Theatre Royal from September 24th to 29th, he talked to us about getting the chance to star in one of the most popular UK touring shows.

“The funny thing is that I am loving it, and I wake up in the morning and look forward to coming in!” So says TV name Mark Benton of his stage musical debut in Hairspray, with which the round-faced 47-year-old is now touring the country in a role played at different times and across different art forms by John Travolta, Divine, Michael Ball, and Harvey Fierstein. How did a veteran of Waterloo Road and Land Girls on TV and various Mike Leigh films on screen end up playing an overweight laundress living in racially segregated Baltimore, Maryland, in 1962 – and singing and dancing eight times a week with it? He laughs as he recalls one particular remark: “I remember when I left college, someone said, `Being big, don’t you worry about being typecast?’ and I thought, well, if I’m being typecast, I’m working.”

And, with Hairspray, on something that comes with “an awful lot of new challenges”. Benton did plays with music while studying at RADA, the prestigious London drama school, but he doesn’t read music so knew he was sailing into unknown territory on that front alone. What’s more, he has never before played an American. “But that’s all part of the challenge, and it’s a good one and it’s something as an actor where you can say, `OK, let’s go!’” Benton is coming to terms with a part that requires the physically capacious Edna to do a fair share of shimmying, all the while sporting a costume that can leave the actor absolutely dripping with sweat after a show. “I’ve had the fat suit on and it’s a killer, though it’s only when you take it off that you realise that your t-shirt is soaking wet,” says Benton, who on this topic takes the pragmatic view. “I’ve wanted to lose weight for a while now, so I think this is going to be an easy way to do it.” Benton lives on the south coast with his wife and three children, ages 14, 12, and 7. So, how does he feel about touring? “It was a tricky decision, if I’m honest, but we came to it together, and I thought, if I don’t do it now, I’ll probably never do it.” As it happens, Benton appeared just after Christmas on the ITV1 show Panto!, starring alongside Sheridan Smith, who’s won Olivier Awards for doing musicals on stage. So did she offer him any advice? “No,” he says with a smile. “She just said, `You’ll love it; you’ll enjoy it. Just throw yourself in there’ – and so, I am.”

RSPCA Staff and volunteers deﬁnitely CAN!

he RSPCA Norwich and Mid-Norfolk Branch staff and volunteers took to the skies at the end of June with a sponsored skydive to raise funds for the local charity.

Temp Cover Fundraising & Marketing Manger Tammy Clarke said “This is the first adrenaline event of its kind from the RSPCA and we are hoping that it will really bring a focus to the extraordinary work that the RSPCA Norwich & Mid Norfolk Branch do. We have been working so hard on fund raising and this event gives us the opportunity to do something daring whilst raising the profile of the plight of local animals. We hope the final figure will be over £5000 and would say a huge thank you to all our sponsors!” The RSPCA Norwich and MidNorfolk branch is an independent and self-financing charity with a separate charity number and board

of trustees. Many local people donate to the RSPCA without realising that unless they specifically request monies to come to their local branch it will all go to HQ! Here at the local branch we see the results of neglect and cruelty every single day and it costs about £800 per day to continue the work we do. Last year we spent over £56,000 on veterinary care for our animals and rehomed over 400 animals. We also work in our local community with Animal Action Days offering free advice, welfare vouchers and low cost microchipping so we try to give back to our local area as well as looking after abused, abandoned or neglected animals. hady areas are thought by many to be one of the most difficult parts of a garden to plant, particularly if the soil is poor and dry… But fear not, there’s a whole host of garden treasures which will thrive in ‘dingy’ places where, for instance, a building or fence causes a permanent shadow, or where the leaf coverage of mature trees shelters the ground beneath for many months of the year. Choose plants carefully according to whether the shady area is dry or damp, incorporate organic matter such as composted manure before planting to help get your plants off to a good start and water well during the first year to help them establish. Shrubs can be useful to give height and structure, and those with bright or variegated leaves are especially useful as they stand out from the crowd and lighten the area but keep numbers or types limited to avoid confusion when looked at as a whole. Easy and reliable shrubs include hollies, Sambucus (elder family) like ‘Sutherland Gold’, which has beautiful dissected foliage, Aucuba japonica (spotted laurel), and Viburnum tinus ‘Eve Price’ a tough evergreen shrub which produces white ﬂowers in clusters during winter.

For dramatic evergreen foliage try Fatsia japonica which has large light-green glossy leaves similar to a fig leaf in shape. Sweet box or Christmas box (Sarcococca) is a wonderful shrub with small but incredibly fragrant white ﬂowers during winter. Try cutting a ﬂowering sprig to take indoors for a natural air freshener!

For lower-growing interest, try Brunnera ‘Jack Frost’ or ‘Haspens Cream’. Both have dramatic heart-shaped leaves and forget-me-not blue ﬂowers in spring. Hostas look fabulous in lush clumps, but watch out for slugs and snails. Keep them at bay with slug pellets which have been approved for organic use and are not harmful to birds, pets or children. You could try combining your Hostas with ferns and spring ﬂowering bulbs such as snowdrops, bluebells and dog-tooth violets for a woodland glade effect.

There are no parts of your garden where plants will not grow, it’s all about choosing the right plant to suit the location – get it right and you’ll be amazed by the results! If it’s groundcover that you need try Ajuga ‘Catlins Giant’, a large leaved bugle which will spread into a carpet of rich purple with blue ﬂower spikes rising above, plus pulmonarias (lungwort), lamium (deadnettle) or stylophorum (celandine poppies). Another great plant for shade is the curious ‘mouse plant’ which has glossy arrow shaped leaves and insect-pollinated bulbous ﬂowers which resemble small mice with long tails peeping out from amongst the foliage! Walls, fences and obelisks can be clothed with climbers such as honeysuckle and many clematis varieties will also put on a cheerful display. A large-leaved variegated ivy will adhere itself to a structure, as will the beautiful climbing Hydrangea petiolaris. Both of these can also be used as weed-suppressing groundcover. Shady areas can make a useful retreat on hot sunny days, so make sure you leave space to position a bench or, if room allows, a table and chairs where you can relax and admire your garden!

rees are plants and therefore have flowers. The classification of trees is based on flower design. Flowers have four main parts; the stamen (male) producing pollen, the stigma (female), which receives pollen and the style, which links the stigma to the ovary. The ovary contains the ovules which develop into seeds. Some ﬂowers have male and female organs (hermaphrodite), like cherry, lime and laburnum. Some trees have separate male and female ﬂowers (monoecious) like beech, birch and hazel. Both of these are capable of self pollinating which can lead to genetic weakness. Other trees are totally male or female and

need to be in close proximity to breed (dioecious). Holly and yew are examples of dioecious trees. Pollen is transferred to the stigma in a number of ways: Insects are the most common pollinators. These flowers produce copious amounts of sugar rich nectar and sticky pollen grains which adhere to the insect. Birds – To attract birds, the flowers tend to be brightly coloured but without perfume because birds have a poor sense of smell. The flowers might have protruding stamens which brush against the bird’s feathers.

Mammals – Trees pollinated by bats have large ﬂowers and vast quantities of nectar, like the African baobab. Perhaps the most unusual is the knobthorn acacia; its .pollen is spread by the giraffe! Sample the wild delights of August and September As the transition from summer to autumn is taking place, Jonathan Tyler shows us how to make the most of the local seasonal wild-food treats waiting to be gathered. Still in bloom, meadow sweet with its heads of frothy cream coloured ﬂowers can be recognised growing in damp meadows and alongside wet ditches. It makes an interesting addition to summer drinks, be it in lemonade or gin and tonic. If your preference is for a more herbal tonic; wild fennel (coastal & waste ground) and yarrow (grassland and hedges) are plentiful and easy to recognise; in fennel’s case the sweet aniseed smell is also a give-away. Both make excellent herbal teas with their own distinctive ﬂavours. On the coast marsh samphire, which is also known as glasswort (due to its historical association with the glass industry), more than repays the effort of gathering, provided it’s not in a protected area. As a seasonal treat it should receive the same kind of accolades that greet the asparagus harvest. Raspberries are one of the most delicious of wild fruits to be found in August. They also seem to be increasingly common in dry woodlands on sandy soils especially under conifer trees; perhaps because birds enjoy raspberries too, spreading the seeds from cultivated raspberries back into the wild. For those looking for fungal feasts puffballs often appear a few days after rain showers on dry grasslands and heaths. The giant puffball is also to be found in August and September on rich soils in meadows and wood edges. This behemoth of the mushroom world can be surprisingly difficult to spot, despite its size (up to 80cm in diameter).

For me nothing is more synonymous with the passing of summer into autumn than the arrival of blackberries; with September being the real glut month. Not so long ago it was common for families to take to the hedges armed with a variety of pots and tubs to do battle

with the thorny brambles; searching for those fat ripe purple gems, the best of which always seemed to be tantalisingly just out of reach. Then there is the question of what to do with the gathered bounty. Don’t just settle for endless blackberry and apple crumbles or stuffing them all into the freezer. Instead try some of these fantastic recipe ideas to really cash in on the berry bonanza; blackberry vinegar, spiced bramble jelly, blackberry welsh cakes, bramble crowdie, blackberry sorbet or even blackberry vodka. For something more unusual, look-out for field poppy, the brown seed heads of which ripen in September. The seed pods, looking like miniature lanterns contain a multitude of tiny seeds. To gather enough to use requires access to a good number of seed heads. Place a few handfuls of the mature seed heads into a paper bag and give it a good shake to release the seeds which can then be stored for use in baking. A more substantial treat comes in the form of hazelnuts,, if you can find any the squirrels have not got to already. The ripe nuts make a tasty treat and archaeological evidence has shown that we have been gathering this natural snack for thousands of years, even if it remains just as hard as ever to get at the nut inside.

he twists and turns of a modern-day family saga had Julie Prentice reaching for her pen and enabled her to write her fascinating biography. “On Earth as it is in Heaven has not been written by me, but by the spirit inside of me. I have received this gift from above,” says the former business woman turned author who saw her book launched at her church, Norwich Family Life Centre. Over the years she has fought rejection, pain, financial hardship, fear and bitterness. But today, at 55, she feels she has the life she always wanted with a loving husband, two teenage children and a purpose she could only have dreamed about. Julie has defied the obstacles to spearhead life from a desk clerk to a successful manager in the cosmetics industry with over 150 consultants. She also worked at pubs, clubs and London’s cosmopolitan markets to make the repayments on her first home 30 years ago. Her book details the challenges, heartaches and joys and tells how her faith turnaround changed her from a tough career woman. “God met me during a crisis that I could not solve. He replaced my heart of stone with one of ﬂesh. As he tackled long-standing emotional issues, he gave me my

life back. Until that time eight years ago, it was as if I wore a plastic mackintosh to protect myself from the outside world,” said Julie who now helps with church Alpha courses, supports her husband’s construction business and is a beauty representative. Her gripping biography also tells of the unique dreams and visions that have ushered her into a different world of angels and eternity as she has understood God’s mandate for loving others. “I have enjoyed every minute of writing this. My desire is to help others and inspire them with hopes and dreams for a greater future like God has given me. I firmly believe that with God, we can

all have the desires of our heart,” says Julie from Taverham, Norwich. “At school I always wanted to be a writer but although the teachers recognised my talent it seemed impossible. It is amazing what you can do when you take a step of faith when you have a mission from God,” says Julie. Julie takes her book on the road as a visiting speaker at churches and women’s events. he Maids Head is close to Norwich Cathedral and is believed to be the oldest hotel in Britain. The hotel is on the site of a house owned by the early Norman bishops. This house became a guest house for visitors to the Cathedral and was eventually transformed into the Murtel Fish or Molde Fish Tavern, the predecessor of the Maids Head. The tavern is first mentioned in Norwich records in 1287. John Paston recommended the Maids Head as good place to stable a horse in a letter dated 2nd November 1472, confirming the change of name. The hotel has had some famous visitors over the years. Edward the Black Prince, the eldest son of King Edward III, was entertained at the Murtel Fish in1350 when he attended a joust in Norwich. Queen Catherine of Aragon, first wife of King Henry VIII, was at the hotel in 1520. During Kett’s rebellion in 1549, both the rebels and the royal armies occupied the Maids Head. Queen Elizabeth I visited Norwich in 1587. One of the hotel’s legends is that she slept there. In 1599, William Kemp, a member of William Shakespeare’s company, recovered at the Maids Head after his nine-day dance from London.

The Maids Head Bar and snug, which is next to the restaurant, dates from the late 16th century. Guests can now sample the new Maids Head Ale there, brewed by Woodfordes and launched at the Royal Norfolk Show.

Making His Mark I

Mark Owen talks about his new album, The Art of Doing Nothing…

n 2011, when Take That finished their record-breaking, world-eating Progress tour, they all agreed to take a year off. For Mark Owen, this was a strange prospect: although he loves to be at home with his family, he finds it hard not to be doing, organizing and taking control of his life. He likes a plan. But this time he decided to pause, not to rush into anything. Instead, he went down to the bottom of his garden. There’s a circular bench there, where he sat and tinkered with a few ideas. He did some sketches for an animation, a spot of painting and messed around with some tunes. He thought about what it was like to hit your forties and tried to open up his mind rather than filling it with a schedule, an aim or a worry. “I was sitting at that bench for a bit, on my own,” he laughs. “It was a party for one. And then people started turning up.” The first to arrive were his long-time song-writing collaborators, Ben Mark and Jamie Norton. Mark told them that he wasn’t sure if he wanted to work, but that he was happy to sit around and chat for a while. So were they. Gradually, their chats developed into a concept: The Art of Doing Nothing.

“The important thing about all of this process is that it was open,” says Mark. “For a while it wasn’t going to be songs, but animation. Then for a while, I wasn’t even going to sing on the record. But I’ve been making songs for 20 years now and I don’t really know what else to do – it’s my hobby and my day job all in one. Still, it feels better somewhere in my psyche to call it a project rather than a solo album, because so many people have contributed. Before this, I didn’t know that could happen. I felt you had to do everything yourself, otherwise it wouldn’t be real.” Not a solo album, then, though everyone is bound to focus on Mark. “I can cope with that,” he smiles. “I’ve relaxed into my shoes a little bit more. Instead of thinking these are not my shoes, I’ve realised they are. No one’s stealing them off me!” Instead, The Art of Doing Nothing is a toast to the joy of collaboration, three cheers for easing off the accelerator, for letting things unfold rather than taking control. It’s an album full of surprises, with depth and perspective, optimism and wisdom about our “massively significant, tiny little speck life”.

The concept is of creating by not forcing things, by just letting the moment take over. From that, a few songs emerged: scrappy demos and small creations, but nothing too concrete or definite. “We didn’t think too hard about them,” Mark says. Where in the past he would have obsessed over them, worked them up and niggled over details, this time he thought he’d let them ﬂy. Someone suggested that a couple of producer friends, Charlie Russell and Brad Spence, might be good for the project, so the demos were sent there with a few notes. “See what came back,” says Mark. “Let them experiment without us looking over their shoulder.” What came back sounded great, so he and Jamie and Ben added a little more.

Wild Swimming in the River Waveney

On a summer’s day, what could be more refreshing than slipping into the cool clear waters of a local river or lake?

ild Swimming is becoming more and more popular, so this summer, why don’t you give it a go? “The health benefits of wild swimming are increasingly well known”, says Daniel Start, author of Wild Swimming. “Taking the plunge reawakens the senses, boosts the immune system, increases blood ﬂow and provides a natural endorphin high that creates an addictive urge to dive back in”. If you would like to follow in Deakin’s watery footsteps, then head to Outney Common, which is one of the best places to swim on the River Waveney. You can find this idyllic spot by turning off the A143 at the

Ditchingham roundabout. Park at the Duke of York pub, and follow the footpath along the river, to find a large pool with a willow tree. Children will love the rope swing and canoe hire is available from a nearby caravan site. There is excellent riverside access for over a mile, so even on a sunny weekend, you’ll be able to find a secluded spot to enjoy a dip. This summer, there’s another way to enjoy the River Waveney. The River Waveney Trust, which aims to make the river accessible for the enjoyment of local residents, has announced that a new river study centre will open at the former Otter Trust HQ in Earsham. The centre will enable the RWT to host educational and entertainment events as well as a variety of courses on environmental issues and traditional rural crafts, from raft building to brickmaking. The Centre will also be working with local schools to teach children about wildlife on the river. So make the most of your local river this summer. If you want to relax, cool down or experience nature in a different way, then you know what to do; pack a picnic and your swim suit and take the plunge!

Get Ready for Winter

t might feel like summer has only just arrived and the last thing you are thinking of is lighting your fire, but those cold, long nights will soon be upon us and a warm, cosy fire is a must. Here are my top tips for preparing for winter. You should have your chimney swept annually, even twice annually if you run your stove or open fire continuously over winter. Having your chimney swept will remove any soot and tar build up and allow the appliance and ﬂue to work safely and efficiently. Check the door rope and glass gasket seals on a stove. Worn out seals will allow excess air to enter the firebox and result in a fierce burn with limited control.

Lastly, if you do not currently have a stove and are thinking of getting one before the winter, now is the best time to start looking and don’t worry if you haven’t got a chimney; providing that regulations permit it a stove can be fitted without a chimney stack. In the third of a series of five articles, Sarah Doig dips into the account written by Daniel Defoe following his tour of East Anglia in 1722.

he journalist and novelist Daniel Defoe is famous for his fictitious account of shipwrecked Robinson Crusoe’s life on a desert island. However many people are unaware that he travelled extensively in Europe, and in later life he embarked on an epic journey around Great Britain. Defoe’s delightful account of his travels in 1722 through East Anglia portrays rural and maritime life a few decades before the industrial revolution changed the face of our region forever. “This county of Suffolk is particularly famous for furnishing the City of London with turkeys, and it is thought there are more turkeys bred in this county and the part of Norfolk that adjoins to it than in all the rest of England.” Defoe was fascinated to hear first-hand accounts of up to 300 droves of turkeys on the road from Ipswich to London. “They begin to drive them generally in August, by which time the harvest is nearly over, and they may feed in the stumbles as they go. Thus they hold on to the end of October, when the roads begin to be too stiff and deep for their broad feet and short legs to march in.” After a visit to see the “exquisite” memorial to Sir John Holt in Redgrave Church, Daniel Defoe crossed into

Norfolk. “Between the frontiers of Suffolk and the city of Norwich on this side, which is not above 22 miles in breadth, are the following market towns, viz: Thetford, Hingham, Harleston, Diss, West Dereham, East Dereham, Harling, Attleborough, Watton, Bucknam, Windham, Loddon, etc. Most of these towns are very populous and large; but that which is remarkable is, that the whole country round them is interspersed with villages, and those villages so large, and so full of people, that they are equal to market towns in other counties; in a word, they render this eastern part of Norfolk exceeding full of inhabitants.” The weaving industry, centred on Norwich, was at its peak when Defoe visited Norfolk in 1722. “An eminent weaver gave me a scheme of their trade on this occasion, by which, calculating from the number of looms at that time in the city of Norwich only, he made it appear very plain that there were 120,000 people employed in the woollen and silk and wool manufactures.” He describes the crisis which had hit the Norfolk textile industry a few years earlier because of the fashion of wearing imported painted calicos and cotton. An Act of Parliament the year before Defoe’s visit, prohibiting the use of calicos, had saved the local industry. “The manufacturers assured me that there was not, in all the eastern and middle part of Norfolk, any hand unemployed if they would work, and that the very children after four or five years of age, could every one earn their own bread.” The eighteenth century was to prove the heyday of the Norfolk textile industry which sadly started it’s gradual decline in the following century. Up-cycled Photo Frame

Have you ever picked up a bargain at a charity shop or boot sale, but it’s just the wrong colour or style for your home? This issue, our crafty lady, Caroline, shows us how to up-cycle our second-hand ﬁnds! I saw this pretty yet dated frame in my local charity shop and felt it had potential. Firstly, I removed the glass and picture from the frame. Use masking tape and newspaper to avoid painting areas you don’t want to paint. Make sure the frame is clean and dust-free.

With matt emulsion, dab a light layer of paint onto the frame, ensuring to get into all the nooks and crannies. I chose to go for a minimal look with matt white, but you could try a different colour, or even use some paints from a craft shop to create a colourful new design. I did this several times, allowing the coats to dry in between applications until I was happy with the finish. Sunny weather helps with the drying process! Ooh, that’s better, one up-cycled photo frame! Find a treasured family photo or rummage through old postcards at a charity shop for a retro shot. I’ve chosen some old sheet music, which looks a treat with the plain white frame!

This year’s headliner is the acclaimed jazz singer, Jacqui Dankworth, who has connections to this area and even an honorary doctorate from UEA. Jacqui will be appearing on 23rd August in the auditorium of the Archbishop Sancroft School with the Charlie Wood Trio. Considered to be “one of the classiest acts in British jazz singing” (The Guardian), Jacqui is a diverse songwriter, and incorporates elements of folk and blues into her songs. Throughout the week, you can experience everything from a lesson in oil painting to talks on local history and wildlife. If your little ones love nature, they will enjoy Famous Five Birds on 21st August, a beautiful shadow puppet show which teaches children about different bird calls with songs and films.

Technology can hurt! Q: Tablet computers such as the iPad are becoming more and more commonplace both in the workplace and at home. How do I keep a good posture and prevent pain when using my Ipad? ad?

More and more of our patients are starting to complain that these are starting to put a strain on their shoulders, necks and backs. In a recent study by Microsoft, researchers found that tablet users have a higher potential for “neck and shoulder discomfort” versus using a notebook or a desktop computer. The study found that the worst way to use your iPad is on your lap. Whether you are watching a movie or typing, keeping your iPad on your lap places greater strain on your neck and shoulders. No matter how good your ergonomic set up, it is always recommended that you take regular postural breaks at least every 20 minutes.

Help your child eat more healthily

I know that oily fish is good for kid’s brains and behaviour but I have enough problems getting them to eat vegetables, never mind sardines, salmon or mackerel. Is there any other solution?

How does Chancel Repair Liability

affect your home?

t may surprise many homeowners to learn that the historic obligation to contribute to the cost of chancel repairs still exists in many areas. Given the high cost of maintaining the buildings concerned, the financial implications for individuals required to make a payment t owards the upkeep of a parish church can be extremely serious. Historic Origins

Chancel repair liability stems from the English Churchâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s entitlement to collect tithes, granted by King Ethelwulf in 855, and given statutory basis in the Statute of Westminster of 1285. Under medieval canon law, the rector of a parish church was responsible for the maintenance of the church chancel, which was largely funded from the rectorial tithes received. Over the centuries tithes were, in most cases, substituted for a rent charge liability which was ultimately abolished in 1977. However, the underlying liability to pay for chancel repairs was not abolished but remained attached to former rectorial land and does so to this day.

Modern Chancel Repair Liability For properties in England located in an area with a continuing liability, the Parochial Church Council can apply to exercise the right to demand payment for the cost of repairs. Anybody in the process of buying property should ensure that their conveyancer performs a chancel repair liability search so that a suitable

insurance policy can be put in place upon completion in the event that the search reveals a potential liability.

Existing property owners, unaware of a potential liability affecting their home but with concerns on the subject, may wish to discuss the matter with an experienced conveyancer.

One of the difficulties predicting whether a property is affected today is that the land to which the liability relates will not necessarily be close to the church to which the liability relates.

Chancel Repair Liability from 12 October 2013 At present the church does not have to take pre-emptive action to safeguard their right to demand a payment for chancel repairs. However, as from 13 October 2013 the church will be obliged to protect the right by placing a notice on the title register of registered land or lodging a caution against first registration in cases involving unregistered land. Unless the church has preserved their right to demand payment for repairs in this manner, a purchaser of land for valuable consideration will take the property free of any liability.

The end to Chancel Repair Liability? The change is designed to bring greater certainty for purchasers so they know exactly what liabilities they are taking on. However, the change will not bring a complete end to the liability. Chancel repair liability will continue to bind the owners of land purchased or registered before 13 October 2013. If the church protects their position through a notice requiring a contribution to chancel repairs,

Existing property owners may wish to perform a chancel repair liability search against their home so that if a potential liability is identified an insurance policy can be put in place. From 13 October 2013 onwards this may not be possible where the church has placed a notice against the property. Whenever purchasing property you should always ensure that you instruct an experienced, qualified conveyancer so that all the necessary enquiries and searches are made before completing the transaction.

he number of new mortgages being taken out may be well short of the volumes seen in the heady days before the credit crisis, but that doesn’t mean that the job of finding the best mortgage gets any easier. The number of home loans on offer is mind boggling and even if you’ve already worked out whether it’s a variable rate or fixed rate product that you’re going to plump for, you still need to fathom out which is the cheapest option for you. Unlike personal loans or credit cards the answer isn’t as straightforward as referring to a best buy table on a comparison website, although many lenders still market attention grabbing interest rates, hoping that it will be sufficient to win custom from those who don’t take the time to shop around or use the services of an independent mortgage broker. Unfortunately some lenders continue to bypass the broker community and sell their products directly via branch networks or increasingly online, a situation which has hit the intermediary market hard. Banks and building societies continue to develop products with profit margins based on a wide range of rate and fee combinations, and whilst it may work for them, for the man on the street it can be a

big headache. One of the biggest problems for consumers is working out which is the most appropriate mortgage based on the total cost, i.e. not just the interest rate but also the associated fees which can vary enormously between lenders, LTVs and individual products. Selecting the most appropriate mortgage product isn’t a two minute job because it’s not a case of one mortgage fits all. The best deal will also depend on your own personal circumstances including the length of the term and the amount you’re looking to borrow. It doesn’t help matters when you read headlines such as those that surfaced recently saying mortgage fees are at their highest ever. But what they fail to point out is the impact of lower interest rates which have fallen sharply over the last few months?

HEVROLET’S compact Multi-Purpose-Vehicle (MPV) brings a touch of pizzazz to the sector. It adopts a daring look with its squat rooﬂine and crossover inspired profile, while keeping the distinct Chevrolet‘face’portrayed by the divided radiator grille and bow-tie emblem. Based on the show car concept first seen back in 2008, the Orlando is an honest family car for 2013, combining seven-seat practicality, interior elasticity and liberal load space. There’s no question that the Chevy offers an invigorating alternative to many of the MPVs presently on the market. The sturdy projecting wheelarches enhance a‘body in, wheel out’ appearance, while at the same time ensuring an agile stance. But, design is nothing without wellthought-out functionality, so the ‘theatre-style’seating configuration of the Orlando’s three rows of seats, and the abundant storage solutions will grab your attention if you’re a family motorist.

The interior seating is referred to as ‘theatre-style’ because, regardless of the sweeping roof-line, designers have succeeded in raising the second and third rows which allow your passengers to get an even better view, both forwards and to the side - and without compromising head-room. Numerous seating arrangements are possible with either the second or third rows folded independently or together to make a ﬂat load area. The second seat tier also has a rolland-fold facility to allow easy access into, and out of, the third row. And when the time comes to shifting large loads of cargo, the Chevrolet’s boot is one of the most capacious in the compact MPV class, with 1,499 litres available when both rows of seats are collapsed. Being based on Chevrolet’s successful and award winning Cruze saloon, already proven to offer excellent ride, handling and safety, the Orlando gives a rewarding drive. It pulls well with its 2.0-litre, 161bhp diesel engine, on test here. Maximum speed when mated, as

my car was, to a six speed manual transmission, is 121mph - and zero to 62mph comes in a reasonable 10 seconds. Emissions and fuel economy are competitive at 139g/ km and up to 53.3mpg. The MPV is also comfortable, and it soaks up road surface imperfections admirably. But sit in the cabin for a long journey and you can’t help noticing a few cheap and ﬂimsy areas here and there. Of course, safety is always a chief consideration for this category of car, and in the Orlando you’ll be reassured. Its body structure is constructed of high strength steel to form a passenger safety cage, providing protection in the event of a collision to the front, rear and side. Should the worst happen, you’ll also be shielded by six airbags – twin front, side and curtain. This Chevy is an undeniably practical and safe vehicle to transport your family around in – and you’ll be able to buy a brand new Orlando, in top of the range LTZ guise, for under £22,000.

A Taste of Summer Lemony Chicken & Roasted Tomato Nicoise Salad Spinach Curry Serves 4, prep time 15 mins, cook time 40 mins

INGREDIENTS 800g diced chicken leg or thigh 2 onions, sliced • 2 chillies, finely chopped 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped 4-5cm ginger, finely chopped 1 tsp turmeric • 10 cardamom pods 1 tsp each cumin & coriander seeds, lightly toasted then ground Juice of 4 lemons • 200g spinach 400ml veg or chicken stock Large handful coriander, chopped 1. Heat 4 tbsp of oil in a large, heavy-based pan. Add the chicken and fry on a high heat, turning once, until golden. Remove to a plate. 2. Add the onion and a splash more oil if needed. Fry gently for 5 mins. Add the garlic, ginger, chillies and spices. Fry for another 2 mins. 3. Put the chicken back in the pan, with the lemon juice and stock. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 20-25 mins, until the chicken is cooked through. Add the spinach and stir to wilt the leaves. Season and stir in the coriander to serve.

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Lay the tomatoes on a nonstick baking tray and sprinkle over the marjoram or oregano leaves, 1 tsp sugar and a little salt and pepper. Drizzle with 2 tbsp olive oil. Roast for 30 mins then leave to cool. 2. While the tomatoes are roasting, put the onion in a bowl with 1 tsp sugar and 2 tbsp vinegar and leave to marinate for 20 mins. 3. Boil the eggs for 6-8 mins, drain, then peel 4. Boil the potatoes in salted 250g cherry tomatoes, halved water for 12-15 mins until A few marjoram/oregano leaves tender, then drain. 2 tsp caster sugar 5. Boil or steam the beans for 6 tbsp olive oil 5 mins. Refresh in cold water, ½ red onion, finely chopped then drain again. 6. To make the dressing, 2 tbsp red wine vinegar whisk the marinated onion 4 eggs with the rest of the oil, garlic, 700g new potatoes, halved mustard and lemon juice. 250g green beans, cut into thirds Season with salt and pepper. 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 7. Arrange the salad leaves, 2 tsp dijon mustard potatoes, tomatoes, beans, olives and capers on a large Juice of ½ lemon plate. Peel the eggs, cut into 200g mixed salad leaves quarters and tuck them in 20 pitted black olives around the salad. Drizzle over 2 tbsp capers the dressing and scatter over Handful fresh basil leaves the basil to serve.
