Glad Rags was formed this year when a group of friends got talking over a glass of wine about all the clothes in their wardrobes which had been bought on an impulse and never worn. The women also said they were fed up of travelling all the way to Norwich or Ipswich. So the idea of a local second-hand clothes stall was formed. It was too impractical to move the stall from market to market, so Glad Rags have taken a permanent residence on the Laxfield Road near Poplar Farm. There is a huge selection of clothes for every occasion and the prices are very low! Norwich in bloom!

Norwich scooped a Silver Gilt in the City category at the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Britain in Bloom National Awards for 2012. RHS Britain in Bloom is the biggest voluntary campaign in the UK and works to improve people’s lives through community gardening. Julie Brociek-Coulton, of Norwich in Bloom, said: “We are very proud of all of the groups that have won this

Ask most children in the UK what they love about Christmas and they will tell you - trees, pretty lights and lots of presents! Ask the children of Mbee school in Kenya and they will tell you they have plenty of trees but want ONE present - a light! The school has no electricity supply and that is their greatest wish for this year. Colin and Margaret Flack, proprietors of Adullam’s Cave in Stowmarket, have been visiting Kenya for 6 years, supporting children and families in remote areas of the country, giving them the opportunity to improve their lives through self-help projects - Mbee school is one such project. Over £2,000 has been raised so far, but now they need £800 to connect to the electricity supply in the village. Before Christmas

Christmas kicks off early in Wells-next-the-Sea when Santa arrives to herald the beginning of the Yuletide celebrations. The Christmas Tide Festival starts with a cocktail evening on Friday and continues throughout the weekend with a variety of Christmassythemed events for all ages. On Saturday from noon there’s a Christmas market full of delicious food, an intriguingly titled ‘living Nativity’, and a fancy dress competition. But the real highlight of the weekend is a stunning illuminated procession that travels down the main street of Wells to the Quay, where a magnificent firework display welcomes Father Christmas and his entourage to the harbour after their long journey from the North Pole. Children will be able to visit Santa’s workshop for a warming cup of hot chocolate and can also try their hand at some Christmassy crafts before meeting Mr and Mrs Claus. All the events are either free or have a nominal charge to cover costs. Love ‘em or loathe ‘em, Christmas wouldn’t be complete without a panto! However, if screaming “he’s beeehiiind youuuu” until you’re blue in the face isn’t your cup of tea then this might be more your thing. The Eastern Angles have a new and brilliantly barmy Christmas show called Dial M for Murgatroyd, by Julian Harries & Pat Whymark. It’s their take on the classic country house murder mystery and features a wealth of amusing characters: the pompous Major Fitzall, his batty wife, their spineless son and domineering daughter. And then there’s the eponymous Mrs Murgatroyd - a lady detective with a shrewd eye, a perceptive mouth and an enormous stash of depilatory cream!

See out 2012 in style at a glamorous New Year’s Eve Swing Ball at Carrow Road. Get dressed up in your finest and enjoy a four-course dinner with wine and the elegant sounds of an authentic swing band. Ipswich Road, Yaxley, nr Eye, Suffolk IP23 8BZ his is a country hotel restaurant that you should not use if you are in a rush, or with a party of gossipy old friends. This is a restaurant where you need to take your time to savour every delicious mouthful quietly and at leisure. Way back in June 2010 I wrote about a restaurant where two people could eat for £20: The Auberge is at the other end of the scale – this meal cost almost £60 for the two of us. I doubt if I will ever exceed this! Oh but what a treat to eat properly considered gourmet food; not a ‘catering’ chip in sight. As soon as you enter the tidy car park, it is evident that this is an altogether smarter, up-market eatery. Inside is cosy and welcoming, and we ordered our drinks at the little bar before being seated at a table under the window. I could have had a glass of champagne but declined as I feared the cost, but I later spotted that it would have been a reasonable £7.50

– maybe next time. I noticed that instead of flowers on the tables there was a bowl of big fat lemons and limes. I had left my husband at home with a cold and only half a mouldy lemon to go with his honey. I mentioned this to the waiter and he gave me three to take home. I know it only amounts to about £1, but it was a very kind gesture. Whilst we nibbled fresh warm bread and butter we studied the menu. I ordered the seafood salad which consisted of thick slices of marinated salmon and numerous large prawns on the best dressed green salad I have ever had. It came with little triangles of pumpernickel bread and was altogether wonderful. My companion chose pork tenderloin with risotto and mixed veg. I can report that the meat was succulent, the sauce exquisite, and the risotto creamy.

Dessert is always a worry for me… will it be big enough? My passion fruit roulade did not disappoint. Surrounded by sharp fruity mango sauce the

creamy filled sponge slices were rich and satisfying. My friend chose the Panettone bread and butter pudding and almost failed to finish it – this was a generous serving indeed. Again I was allowed a taste, and instantly swooned at the taste of it; egg custard with the inimitable flavour of the Panettone with a good dollop of Masala sauce. We each followed this with coffee which came with a plate of sweeties; my coffee was a small cafetière of really fresh, hot, strong coffee, my friend had a cappuccino. In actual fact my cafetière would have done for both of us – I had three little cups full and had to leave the rest. The sweeties were hunks of home-made fudge and mint chocolates. I asked the efficient and unobtrusive waiter about disabled access as the porch and front door were not encouraging: he assured me that there was much better access at the side of the restaurant where the hotel rooms were located. The toilet was smart with black and white tiles and shiny chrome fittings. No hand towels, but a pile of small individual terry towels and a bin to drop them in when used. I hope no one pinches them!

Slow-roasted Gressingham Duck legs

with a red wine and mushroom sauce

Serves 2

Preparation time 30 Mins Cooking time 60 Mins Preparation Preheat oven to 180°C/350°F/ gas mark 4. Season the duck legs all over and brown in a hot pan on both sides. Set aside. Method Fry the onion, carrot and garlic until soft, then add the flour and cook for one minute. Add the wine and simmer until reduced by half. Add the stock, thyme and bay leaf.

Return the duck legs to the pan, skin-side-down. Place an ovenproof lid or tin foil over the pan and cook in the oven for one hour or until the meat is tender. Meanwhile, fry the mushrooms and bacon and add to the pan in the oven approximately 20 minutes before the end of cooking. Serving Delicious served with rice, pasta, mashed potatoes and vegetables.

he walk around Wingfield and Syleham is a fascinating discovery of Suffolk’s past with moated castles, secluded churches, grazed commons, windmills and watermills. Walk past the historic Wingfield College to Wingfield Castle before strolling along a peaceful causeway to the magically lonesome St Mary’s Church. You will discover a tale that spans centuries from the de la Poles, the first dukes of Suffolk. St Edmunds Hall (1) Start at Wingfield College (1), which celebrated its 650th anniversary in 2012. One of Suffolk’s most extraordinary houses, it has been associated with Mary Tudor, Henry VIII and the de la Pole family. Next door, you will find St Andrew’s Church (2), the burial place of the de la Poles. Leave the church via the graveyard, following the lane past

Wingfield Castle was originally the moated manor house of the Wingfield family, but it was upgraded into a castle in 1385 when Michael de la Pole married the daughter and heiress of Sir John Wingfield and was made the Earl of Suffolk. Follow the cut path around Wingfield Green and head north along Wingfield Road towards Syleham. Look out for the curious Card Hut at the junction with Windmill Lane and follow this lane (signed Leading to Public Paths) to see the remnants of Syleham Windmill (4). Return to the Wingfield Road into Syleham. In Syleham, just after Syleham Village Hall, take the footpath on your right and follow this to the Hoxne Road. Turn right and right again at the T-junction into Syleham Road to Monks Hall (5) on your left. This attractive timber-framed house dates from around 1600 and takes its name from the monks of the Cluniac Priory in Thetford. Continue along Syleham Road to the crossroads where you will see the Syleham Cross (6), which was erected to celebrate the millennium. Turning left takes you on a causeway to St Mary’s Church (7), Syleham.

St Mary’s sits in lonely isolation surrounded by riverside meadows. Inside, on the left, you can see a shield with three wheels and a lion, representing the arms of Thomas Chaucer of Ewelme (son of Geoffrey Chaucer the Poet). The right-hand shield has the quartered arms of the de la Pole and Wingfield families. Retrace your steps to Syleham Cross and continue along Syleham Road to the site of Syleham Mill and factory (8). The mill started as a corn-grinding water mill, but was converted in 1830 to manufacture cloth.

OF EARLS AND DUKES At its peak, it was one of the largest privately owned clothing manufacturers in the country. Access to the bridge across the River Waveney was once controlled by a toll gate. In 1955 you would have been charged one penny to cross! Just past Syleham House (the Georgian miller’s house), turn right onto a footpath. Follow a concrete track before picking up waymarkers

This winter, Village People previews three new adaptations… but what was better? The book or the ﬁlm?

Les Miserables Fans of the stage show will have “dreamed a dream” of Les Miserables being adapted to film. The beloved musical has been seen by more than 60 million people in 21 different languages – we hope that the new film allows even more people to enjoy this epic story. Set in 19th Century France, Les Miserables tells the story of Cosette and her protector, Valjean, who is on the run from the law. Orphaned as a young girl and sent to live with the villainous Thenardiers, it seems like there is no hope for Cosette, but can Valjean escape the fanatical police officer Javert to save her? At the heart of Les Mis’ appeal is the fantastic repertoire of songs, from Cosette’s meloncholy “Castle on a Cloud” to the bawdy “Master of the House”. You may ask, “Do we need another adaptation of Great Expectations?”but this one promises to be a real delight. Just as you would re-read a favourite novel, a new adaptation always makes you see the story in a different way. Mike Newell, director of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, brings most of the Hogwarts crowd with him, including Ralph Fiennes, Robbie Coltrane and Helena Bonham-Carter. Young orphan, Pip, is sent to live with the manipulative Miss Havisham – but is she his friend or foe? The role is perfectly suited to Helena Bonham-Carter, who is no stranger to playing eccectric, gothic characters. On a cold winter’s night, a familiar tale, gorgeous costumes and gothic design are just what you need!

Let the Theatre Royal take you on a magic carpet ride this winter

he has played a sassy schoolkid in Waterloo Road and a student with a turbulent love-life in Hollyoaks. Now Lucy Dixon is preparing to switch from the small-screen to the stage to take on the title role in this year’s Norwich Theatre Royal pantomime. With her poise, flair and English rose looks, Lucy is the archetypal principal boy. She said: “I am so excited. I have never played a boy before in panto so there is a first time for everything. I also love the fact it is an English tradition. It is nice to have something like pantomime that is old but is still continuing today and is also very family orientated.

“It brings all the generations together – a bit like Christmas – and it is fun for all ages. There is something for the kids and something for the adults. You can’t help but fall in love with a panto.” Lucy landed her first big break playing sassy fashionista Danielle Harker in the BBC’s hit drama Waterloo Road – the role which catapulted her to mainstream attention.

And that springboard saw her taking on the role of gay student Tilly in Hollyoaks. Lucy feels that she has a responsibility to viewers when taking on a role like this. Lucy explained: “Being a teenager is a difficult time. You are becoming the person you are going to be.” Now she is preparing for another challenge as she plays the brave hero Aladdin in this year’s Norwich Theatre Royal pantomime opposite a cast which includes Graham Cole (PC Tony Stamp in The Bill), Norfolk’s own global wrestler and TV personality Nick Aldis, and popular panto dame Richard Gauntlett in the glittering production which runs from December 18-January 19 and is sponsored once again by Almary Green. And it will be a chance for her to interact with the audience and entertain thousands of people over the festive season. Lucy said: “With pantomime, you connect with the audience and bounce off them. The children are always very vocal. It is so important for them to love theatre, go out and watch performances from a very young age.” Off-stage, she is also hoping to get the chance to see a little bit of Norfolk in between performances. “From what I have seen so far, it is beautiful. Norwich is steeped in history and I love going to National Trust houses, to parks and castles, and country estates. I am looking forward to having a look around those,” said Lucy. And post-panto, it seems as though Lucy is going to be busier than ever so watch out for one of British acting’s brightest stars as her mix of talent and ambition are sure to make her a mainstay of stage and TV work in the years to come…

Observing the

ver the last months weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve seen autumn take hold and fade into winter. Our trees once awash with a beautiful mix of orange, red and green leaves and fallen leaves are now bare whilst the leaves carpet the ground. For most of the last couple of months Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been following what I think is one of the great natural spectacles occurring in Norfolk, the annual red deer rut. The male deer have been waiting all year for this, their antlers are now in their full splendour and they are ready to go!

Between late August and early September bachelor groups of male red deer (stags) break up and males compete to gain control of groups of females (hinds). This period of competition peaks in October providing the best opportunities to watch or photograph these magnificent animals in action.

Trials of Life antlers. With males weighing up to 150kg this impressive display of power is quite something to witness. The winner rounds up a herd of females known as a harem and will guard them from other stags until they come into season; an event which only occurs for a matter of hours. Over the rutting season the females will often change between different stags several times whilst the hierarchy takes place. Eventually the dominant stag will get to mate with the females in his herd and pass on his strong genes to the next generation. All in all this is amazing and fascinating behaviour to watch and document and it is well worth checking out. There are several places in Norfolk to see red deer in action; Holkham Hall on the North Norfolk coast provides a great setting to watch red and fallow deer rutting close up whilst Minsmere nature reserve offers a chance to see wild red deer in action. A word of advice if you do go out to observe the rut;

stags are big and over this period full of testosterone which makes them very aggressive. Never get in between a stag and his females, keep a respectful distance and keep your dog on a lead!

There are two main types of Christmas tree to choose between. The traditional Norway Spruce is a feisty glamour model with thin sharp needles, quick to throw a tantrum and strip bare in a warm, dry room, so best confined to cooler areas of the homes or to outdoor display to avoid any embarrassing nudity. (This habit may be forgiven if you succumb to its wonderful pine fragrance).

The second and more fashionable choice is the exceedingly popular Nordmann Fir, loved by the kids, soft and classy with a glossy ‘nondrop’ attitude. Stylish in any setting, offering a subtly fresh scent and

needle-holding ability, a real show stopper! Having chosen your type, select the size you want, make sure you’re able to inspect un-netted trees, line them up for parade, like a Miss World contest (or Mr Universe if you prefer). Naturally, none are identical; each will have its own particular assets, so get someone to assist by giving the trees a twirl so you can see all sides. Make your winning choice (you can crown it with a star later) and have it re-netted for easy transport or delivery if required. Once home, slip off its stocking and keep your tree as cool as possible until you are ready to bring it indoors. Slice about an inch off its base, fit into a water-retaining stand (regular top-ups are greatly appreciated), adorn it with sparkling jewels, lay magical gifts around and maybe give it a name… How about Twiggy? You could add to the party spirit a colourful cocktail of houseplants such as exotic amaryllis, fragrant hyacinths or dainty cyclamen. Finally, raise a glass of traditional fare to your extra special Christmas tree!

t the Botanic Garden in Cambridge we are privileged to look after one of the best tree collections in the region. The towering evergreen cedars, redwoods and pines together with limes, tulip trees, walnuts and wingnuts form the backbone of the landscape. Some of our trees are the finest specimens in UK cultivation and have acquired ‘champion’ status; others are heritage trees, noteworthy for the stories they tell. Some surprise and delight, like the recent flowering of the beautiful Chinese tree, Emmenopterys henryi, for the first time with us after a thirty year wait!

But not all of our trees are huge specimens or botanical rarities. Many of our most eye-catching trees are good options for East Anglian gardens, being low maintenance and offering seasonal interest, as well as nesting sites and food sources for a whole host of animals.

“The end of November, after leaf fall, is the best time to get new trees in the ground.” The maple family has much to offer and there are several species to choose from in our Winter Garden, including the paperbark maple, Acer griseum. After the vivid red and orange leaves are shed in autumn, the beautiful trunk detail comes to the fore, as papery, rich chestnut strips peel away to flutter in the breeze and seem to catch fire in the low winter sun – positioning is key. Nearby is Acer davidii, the snakebark maple, which displays in contrast a smooth, olive-green bark with pale green stripes and diamond shapes that give rise to the common name. One of the most spectacular trees at this time of year is the trio of Acer palmatum ‘Osakazuki’ in the Autumn Garden. This is probably the best Japanese maple selection for Cambridgeshire’s generally chalky soils, but still needs some shelter from cold easterly winds to prevent leaf scorch. The leaves are relatively large, seven-lobed, green but flush a deep burgundy in early autumn

before turning orange-scarlet, the whole tree strung with bright magenta winged samara fruits. The rose family also offers a vast selection of good trees for the smaller garden. Ornamental hawthorns like the Crataegus prunifolia var persimilis that dot the Systematic Beds provide lollipops of burnt orange leaf in the late autumn, festooned with scarlet fruits and often huge globes of mistletoe. Malus trilobata on the Main Lawn and in the Dry Garden makes a neat pyramid-shaped tree, perfect for underplanting. This choice tree thrives in our dry climate and produces large white, cupped flowers in spring, followed by clusters of green fruits and then seems to ignite, turning burgundy and copper in the autumn.

The History of Yew

his English churchyard giant belongs to a small genus (Taxus) found in northern temperate regions of Europe, North America and Asia. All the species are confined to the middle latitudes and most are grown as ornamental trees. Yews are densely branched and their width is often greater than their height, rarely exceeding 50ft as solitaires. All yews are poisonous and most species yield the alkaloid taxol which is used in the treatment of cancer. All are evergreen with needle like leaves 0.5-1.5 inches long. The fruit (aril) is bright scarlet and borne on the female tree; they are distributed by birds.

All yews are slow growing and very long lived. The Fortingall Yew in Argyllshire is an estimated 5,000 years old. The wood is extremely durable; yew fence posts will outlast metal ones. Venice was founded on yew and when replaced in the 1950s, the refurbished yew beams were sold to the building trade. The oldest man made artefact, a spear 150,000 years old, is of yew. Yew wood is valued in the production of veneers in cabinet making and was once commonly used for bow staves because of its strength and flexibility. In 1472 Henry IV demanded four yew bow staves for every tonne of cargo brought in by ship; this more or less wiped out the yew in Europe, just

before the invention of guns. Many cultures revere the yew and is often associated with their religion – hence the association with churchyards. The ancient Greeks saw the yew as the gateway to the underworld. The thought that sleeping under a yew would cause death was recorded by Dioscorides, a Greek physician, in AD77. In 10thC Wales the fine for cutting down a yew was £1 – more than a lifetime’s wages.

A chainsaw is a marvellous machine, for felling trees, lopping off branches, and cutting up fire wood. However, such machines deserve a lot of respect, because the consequences of things going wrong can be fatal. Chainsaws should always be bought from a reputable dealer, who can advise on the most appropriate machine for the job and your budget. People who buy too heavy a machine, or one with inadequate power, may regret their choice. There is a daunting choice of machines on the market, from small and lightweight electric models to incredibly powerful ones, capable of felling two-hundred year old oaks. Just as you wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ride a powerful motorbike without protective wear such as gauntlets, jacket and helmet, similar precautions should be taken

with chainsaws. Helmet, visor, ear defenders and chainsaw trousers are a must. Visors should be made of a fine mesh allowing moist breath to pass through, and trousers must be chainsaw proof. Other safety precautions may sound like common sense, but it is surprising how often they get neglected; always make sure the wood you are cutting is secure, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t rest your feet on unstable logs, have somebody else nearby, and try whenever possible to ensure that the body of your saw is up against the material being cut. Maintenance of chainsaws is quite straightforward; regularly check that the chain oil tank is topped up, keep your chain sharpened and, most importantly, maintain the chain at the correct tension. Most garden machinery dealers will carry out annual service work for a reasonable sum, and this will help reduce breakdowns and subsequent repair bills. These simple tips will help keep your machine performing at its peak.

here will be two empty places around the dining table as the Stoddart family gather for Christmas. There will also be two empty places in their hearts. For the last seven years the festivities have been overshadowed by sorrow since Phil and Heather lost their two teenage daughters in a road accident. For Heather, the heartache of a mother’s loss will never go away but even during the most diﬃcult times of the year there is a deep peace born of her Christian faith. “My soul is at peace despite the sadness. I am aware of God’s amazing love that has grown ever deeper. Despite pain when our daughters died there was calmness, knowing that God was there throughout everything. Now I realise there is no fear in what is ahead since I know God will be there,” says Heather. Death came quickly and without warning when the lives of Claire and Jenny and their friend Carla were cut short after a drunk driver crashed into their car on a summer’s night in 2006. The news was heralded by a telephone call and soon the couple stood helpless and numb amid

the sirens and flashing lights at the accident scene on the A12 in Suffolk. “I can remember being physically sick,” says Heather when she first knew something was wrong. “But both Phil and I later heard God tell us independently that our daughters were with him when they died and I realised God was crying with us.” The Stoddart family were an integral part of community life – the couple were teachers at the Lowestoft schools near their home and they were members of a local church. As the news unfolded they shared their sorrow with a grieving public as the press recounted the story that spanned long days and months until the court case finally ended with the offending driver behind bars. “It has been important to forgive – I did not want to get revenge because justice is not my problem. Nothing can change what has happened but refusing to forgive means a hard and twisted heart,” says Heather. The strong arms of love and support from a grieving church and community were wrapped around the family amid tears and prayers. Together with their remaining children, Tom and Amy, they walked

arm- in- arm through the fires of adversity and loss with courage and hope. Raw with emotion, the divine hand enabled Heather to help at a Christian youth convention shortly after the accident. “At the time of deepest need God opened heaven just a little bit more,” says Heather who believes she was catapulted into a spiritual realm of rolling hills, bright colours and wonderful warmth as she prayed and sang hymns. “After a time of grieving I knew I had to get stuck into life again. Time is short and you never know what is around the corner. It is important to make the most of life and for parents to make the most of their children’s lives,” says Heather. Psalm 118 has been part of her testimony. Suffering may have torn at her heart but her Saviour has given her rest, assurance and a new life chapter. ark Radio will be returning to the airwaves this Christmas! The local community radio station for Diss and the surrounding area returns to the airwaves on Monday 26th November at 6am for its 4th 28 day broadcast. You can tune in on 87.7FM or pop into the purpose built studios at 18a Market Place in Diss town centre.

Staffed by volunteers, including some well-known local radio presenters, and funded by local advertisers and sponsors, Park Radio first took to the air in Christmas 2010. The station provides local news, interviews and music plus plenty of listener interaction and specialist evening music shows for lovers of rock, blues, soul and country. Time has also been allocated to local teenagers who want to take a turn behind the microphone.

During its 4th 28 day broadcast this Christmas there will be many ways for listeners to take part, enter the numerous on-air competitions as well as request music from the huge record library of over 10,000 tracks. Park Radio has had a great response from both listeners and advertisers. The station has attended many local events including Diss Town Carnival, Proms in the Park, Horham Steam Rally and Scole Fete. Park Radio will also be heavily involved in the Diss Town Christmas Lights switch-on planned for Saturday December 1st. With the support of the community, Park Radio will be applying for a 5 year full-time license during 2013 so that Diss can have its very own permanent radio station.

his winter, David Seddon explores the warming beverages on offer in our region. Tis the season to be merry, after all.

There is a strong and ancient tradition of homebrews and home-distilled drinks in both Norfolk and Suffolk and I certainly remember going to many local fetes and fairs in south Norfolk, where such beverages were proudly displayed for sale. They are less in evidence these days, but can still be found…

Cordial

‘Cordial’ can be a noun – as in an alcoholic or nonalcoholic beverage – or an adjective - as in courteous and gracious, sincere and heartfelt. Both definitions share a sense of warmth and invigoration, but it is the last that gives away the association of ‘cordial’ with ‘the heart’. Cordials are the historical descendants of herbal medicines – made as early as the 13th century in Italy and later in France, often by monks. The non-alcoholic cordials are usually light and summery, and can be sparkling or zingy - as in the case of elderflower cordial – while the alcoholic cordials are generally heavier and more warming. Cordials can be produced by infusion of woods, nuts, herbs, spices, fruits and/or flowers in water or alcohol, with additional sugar and other items;

others are distilled, from a broad range of aromatic or flavouring agents, sometimes with other ingredients, such as cream. Liqueurs are typically quite sweet, and are not aged, but have ‘stood’ for long enough for the flavours and aromas of the various ingredients to merge, meld and marry.

Wines

Apart from the wines made from grapes, there are other wines made from a wide range of fruits, cereals, herbs and even vegetables. Most readers will have tried either elderberry wine or elderflower wine – the delicious and delicate red and white versions of ‘wines’ based on one of the widespread and most commonly found wild shrub. But there is a whole host of other possibilities, making use both of ‘hedgerow’ and ‘common or garden’ fruits and vegetables. Apple, artichoke, barley, blackberry, carrot, damson, dandelion, fennel, ginger and gooseberry are all good basic ingredients for a tasty homemade wine.

Making wine • Clean the main fruit or vegetable, slice, crush and sieve, then simmer (in a little water) for five to fifteen minutes. • Add sugar and any other ingredients and stir until sugar is dissolved • When cool add yeast and leave to ferment for several days. • Strain into a demi-john, fit airlock and leave in warm place to complete fermentation. • When fermentation has ceased, rack into a clean jar and place in a cooler environment. Leave for up to several months until clear then bottle.

Egg nog Egg nog is thought to have originated in East Anglia, but the origins, the etymology and even the ingredients of the original egg nog drink are much debated. It is a sweetened dairy-based beverage traditionally made with milk and/or cream, sugar and beaten eggs, with a brandy, whiskey or rum base and spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg. It is possible that the ‘nog’ part of the word derives from the word

Punches

Punch can be light and fruity for summer afternoons in the garden, or it can be stronger and ‘heavier’, and more appropriate for drinking on a winter evening. Much depends on the ingredients – and the amount of alcohol. The word itself derives from the Hindi panch (meaning ‘five’), as it usually involved five ingredients (alcohol, sugar, lemon, water or tea, and spices). Initially, it was generally made with a cider and was associated in Suffolk with ‘wassailing’ – a ritual which involved singing and offering the brew to apple trees to ensure a fulsome apple harvest. In the 17th century, rum from the West Indies was introduced into England and punch began to be made with a rum base. While it remained a largely home-produced drink, by 1671, punch houses had sprung up in the larger towns and cities of the south of England. In about 1765, William Hogarth painted ‘Gentlemen enjoying punch’ and it is clear that punch was a drink he approved of. Some of his work was devoted to making the contrast between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ drinks; in his engravings of ‘Beer Street’ and ‘Gin Lane’ he depicted the positive sociable drinking of beer and wine (and presumably of punch), and the negative destructive aspects of imbibing gin.

Grog

Rum and water was introduced as a suitable drink for the Navy in 1740 by Vice Admiral Edward Vernon, who was known as Old Grogram because of the coat of grogram cloth he often wore. The drink henceforward became known as ‘grog’ and a half pint was served regularly to the sailors, with extra rations often provided after a victorious encounter with an enemy or a successful voyage. The the grog ration wasn’t ended until 1970, after ‘the Great Rum Debate’ that took place in the House of Commons when it was decided to discontinue the tradition.

‘noggin’, a Middle English term for a small, carved wooden mug used to serve alcohol. The East of England Distillery, established in 2006, sells a ‘Norfolk Nog’. It explains that “This is a very alcoholic cream and is best drunk in moderation. Perfect for long walks, or a day fishing, or if you are not one to brave the elements, add some ice, a comfy chair and a log fire”. In addition to these egg nog type drinks, the St George Distillery also offers a delicious blackberry liqueur – and for those who just can’t choose - a ‘Winter Warmer’ mixed case of whisky, cream, nog and blackberry liqueur.

Hot toddy

My mother always used to serve what she called ‘a hot toddy’ with parkin (a thick cake of ginger, oatmeal, flour, lard and molasses) on November 5th as we watched the fireworks and the traditional bonfire. My mother’s version included rum, milk and honey. It was served indiscriminately to children and adults alike and universally appreciated. I’m yet to find anyone in East Anglia who is familiar with this delicious Guy Fawkes Night combination so why not start a trend this Winter. So, now get ready to make or buy your own winter warmer and then it’s “Cheers!” – to a hearty and warming celebration of whatever winter festival you wish to make merry.

September was a funny old month for me as the weather was still glorious so we managed a couple of weekends on the beach; with sandy sandwiches! I also took delivery of my gorgeous new winter boots so then wanted the weather to finish being summer and get on with autumn so I could start wearing them for winter. Living in the countryside with miles of muddy lanes I wanted something comfortable, durable but with the added benefit of being ‘on trend’. Fashion on Film

The film industry has managed to make a stir in the world of fashion for as long as we can remember. We take a look back through the archives to see how film has influenced what we wear and find out what we should be wearing this year!

The Seven Year Itch (1955)

If you don’t know the film, you will certainly know the image. Marilyn Monroe wears that iconic white halter dress that seductively blows up while standing over the air vent – an absolute classic. This scene has been re-created time and time again, and this style of dress still remains popular over 50 years later.

Dr. No (1962)

If you can only remember one thing from the first James Bond film it will no doubt be the stunning Ursula Andress emerging from the sea in that fabulous white belted bikini clutching a shell. This scene, which lasted just a few minutes, caused a swimwear frenzy. Gone were the boring one-pieces that adorned the beaches and along came a firm favourite for the all over tan, and we’re sure that men didn’t mind the change in fashion much either!

Cleopatra (1963)

Women everywhere piled on blue eye shadow, black eyeliner and false eyelashes for years after this film was released. Maybe they were hoping to re-create the steamy love aﬀair between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton!

Saturday Night Fever (1977)

The disco ﬂoors were full of tight, white, polyester suits after this hit our screens. Fortunately this look died along with disco!

Flashdance (1983)

“What a feeling!” Flashdance was responsible for big hair, leg warmers and slouchy jumpers. Who knew leggings would have such a comeback three decades later?

Clueless (1995)

The main character in this 90s teen classic had a computer to match her outfits! Knee high socks and miniskirts inspired a generation of fashion obsessed teenagers to dress like naughty school girls.

Alice In Wonderland (2010)

Donatella Versace bought this wonderful fantasy land to life in her courageous pastel designs. Pretty prints, oversized bows and gorgeous glitter was this year’s must have.

War Horse (2012)

Despite equestrian and country style fashion always being popular, 2012 saw a sudden increase in demand. Equestrian style clothing is perfectly tailored and a great way to show-oﬀ either a svelte figure, or gorgeous curves. Ralph Lauren, Gucci and Hermès constantly reference equestrianism in their most popular designs, and 2012 saw catwalks full of elaborate riding gear. 2012 also saw Grace Kelly’s Granddaughter Charlotte Casiraghi, a Monaco Royal and a dedicated equestrian and amateur show jumper, sign to top fashion house Gucci. The equestrian success in the Olympics has reaffirmed our passion for the outdoors. We hope that there are still a lot more gorgeous country designs to come!

Village People predicts for 2013

With a new Baz Luhrmann production of The Great Gatsby out in spring 2013, we are hoping that twenties glamour will be making a big comeback. Or will the release of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit mean that woollen capes and hairy feet are the in thing this winter?

Norwich City were expected, at best, to just “make up the numbers” during the first season of Premier League football in 1992/93. A new manager, their top player and talisman leaving the club – few predicted anything other than a harsh struggle and inevitable relegation. This book looks back in detail at that time, including new and exclusive interviews from players and officials involved with the club then, as well as the supporters. A likely story then, but now?

“My breasts are very sore during the run-up to my period. Are there any natural remedies that can help?”

Smart Money Secrets Give high street banks a miss if you are looking for a loan of under £5,000

espite bank base rate being stuck fast at 0.5%, some lenders are still charging interest at a staggering 20% APR plus if you want a personal loan of £5,000 or less.

The battle for our personal loan custom is as intense as it’s ever been, but the problem is that many lenders are cherry picking and concentrating on the higher value end of the market. Five lenders currently fighting to be top dog are advertising record low interest rates of between 5.6% APR and 5.9% APR, but only for sums of £7,500 and above. For lower value loans it’s a very different story, with the majority of lenders charging double digit rates on a £3,000 advance and NatWest and Halifax amongst the most expensive at 20.9% APR and 24.9% APR respectively.

Smart Money Top Tip: Shop around for the lowest rate, as there are some cheaper options out there and by thinking outside the box or taking advantage of deals from new lenders you can save yourself a small fortune in interest charges.

There are cheaper options available, but my research shows you’d do well to steer clear of the established providers if you want get the best deals. There are three borrowing options that stand out, if you want to borrow £5,000 or less, as follows:

1. Zopa, the first peer to peer lender in the UK is now in its eighth year offers the best value deal at 9.5% APR for a £3,000 loan over 3 years 2. RateSetter is one of the more recent lenders in the peer to peer market, offers 9.7% APR for a £3,000 loan over 3 years. Just because you’re not familiar with the names, it doesn’t mean you should discount them – the peer to peer market has quickly established itself as a credible alternative to the big banks – and the low interest rates are much better than you’ll find on the high street. 3. Another option to consider is the Rate for Life card from MBNA. Although this isn’t strictly a personal loan, there’s nothing to stop you using this long term fixed rate credit card in the same way you would as a loan.

If you transfer your balance to the card and set up a monthly standing order for your current account, it works exactly the same as a personal loan. The interest rate is 5.9% APR for as long as it takes you to clear the balance and even including the one off 1.5% balance transfer fee, it remains one of the cheapest ways to borrow. Common Law Marriage: An urban myth?

ncreasingly more couples are living together without formalising their relationship. Emma Alfieri, Chartered Legal Executive in Steeles Law’s family law team, comments: “Many people do not realise that there is no such thing as “common law marriage” in England and Wales. As such, there is no protection for a (financially) vulnerable party. Whilst there have been proposals for a cohabitation law in England, at the moment there is no protection for unmarried couples living together. When there are problems and relationships breakdown, the law is not clear, as it is in respect of divorce and civil partnership dissolution. Steeles Law’s family law team are meeting with an increasing number of cohabiting clients who find themselves surprised by their own situation.

Couples can and should consider having a cohabitation agreement drawn up to confirm the parties’ intentions at the outset. Another interesting point that follows this myth is that if a couple live together and are not married and if one party dies and does not have a Will in place at the time of their death, the surviving partner would have no automatic right to a share in the other’s estate. Many people in cohabiting relationships are also unaware of this.”

When couples purchase a property in their joint names, thought should be given as to how they would like to own that property and if, for example, one party contributes more to the purchase price than the other party, this can and should be recorded. Problems often arise where one party moves in to the other party’s solely owned home and they separate some time later. New Pension Reforms

and how they impact yoU ou’ve probably heard by now that the Government is making some changes to the laws surrounding pensions. What you may not realise, however, is that the new rules could have a major impact on you and your retirement plans.

Automatic enrolment – what is it? In an effort to combat the fact that people are living much longer and pensions need to stretch a lot further, the Government has introduced a new reform to reinvigorate pension saving in the UK and make it easier for everyone to plan for retirement. As of October 1st this year, all employers are required to automatically enrol all eligible workers into a workplace pension scheme. This law will be brought in gradually to every company in the UK over the next 5 years. (Smaller employers and newly formed businesses have until 2016/17 to comply.) The Minister for Pensions, Steve Webb, has described the reforms as “the start of a much-needed seismic shift in pension saving in this country” (Source: Department of Work & Pensions press release, 1st February 2012).

What’s in it for me? If you have a stakeholder pension, these new reforms are particularly good news. Stakeholder pensions struggled because employers didn’t have to contribute and smaller employers were excluded altogether. The automatic enrolment system should be much more effective. As an employee, you’ll be automatically signed up to a staff pension scheme but given a choice to opt out if you wish (employers are banned from incentivising opt-outs). However, there are significant benefits to staying within the scheme. Firstly, your employer has to contribute to your savings and, secondly, the Government offers tax relief on your contributions.

The all-new ŠKODA Citigo marks the start of a new era in the Czech based motor manufacturer’s 117-year history. The company, a subsidiary of Volkswagen and positioned as the entry brand to the group, is very proud of the Citigo because it’s ŠKODA’s first ever city car and is set to expand the brand’s value-for-money appeal to a new type of customer. The newcomer is aimed at younger drivers, families who need a second car and older motorists with an active lifestyle. As a parent of two small children, I can vouch for the ‘young family’ market. I found it great for whizzing from home to the shops and, being big enough to fit my kids in the back, it’s an ideal schoolrun vehicle. My wife, who’s a lot smaller than me, enjoyed driving the ŠKODA far more than I did; the driving position was just too compact for my stocky frame. So how on earth the tiny car’s boot swallowed a family of four’s weekly shop as well as a toddler’s buggy I’ll never know. What really sells this car is its outstanding aroundtown manoeuvrability. It also sets high standards in environmental considerations and technical sophistication. The Citigo can reach 100 mph, albeit not very quickly. Its 0-62 mph time is a very slow 14.4 seconds and this makes it feel sluggish on motorways stretches. However, the GreenTech fuel-saving technologies mean that the tiny hatchback sips, rather than swigs petrol and can return up to 68.9 mpg. Prices for the Citigo line-up begin at just £7,630 for the entry level ‘S’ trim three-door model, with five-door cars only another £350.

Mercedes-Benz B 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY SPORT Things are changing in the world of motoring with premium brand car manufacturers are offering smaller . models. Mercedes are keeping up to speed with these changes with the B-Class. It’s a typical Mercedes sports tourer, offering bags of room, combined with the dynamic performance of a hatchback saloon. The character lines of the exterior point to both of these qualities: the front and rear demonstrate width-emphasising design, with a prominent grille and headlamps extending along the sides at the front while the rear end has a broad rear window, two-piece tail lights and a big tailgate with low loading sill. Sophisticated details, inside and out, confirm the marque’s distinctive first-rate credentials. Interestingly, in response to requests from many customers, the sitting position is now more upright in the reborn B-Class. This makes for great visibility and leads to a degree of legroom which even surpasses that of the Mercedes-Benz S and E-Class. On the move the B 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY SPORT is incredibly nimble but in ‘Sport’ guise the car’s suspension is far too harsh. Mind you, if you don’t mind having your fillings rattled out of your molars then the car is great fun to throw around corners. It’s also fantastic for motorway mile munching. That’s when the car magically decides to ignore any road imperfections and comfort levels resume to what you might expect from Mercedes-Benz. Let’s face it; once you’ve battled the morning rush hour, and the only parking bay left is the awkward one in the corner, you’re going to be thanking yourself you didn’t think bigger was better when you walked into that Mercedes-Benz showroom.

1. Be Yourself Let your customers see the human face of the business.

Interacting via Twitter and Facebook is far less formal which gives you an opportunity to respond to your customers in a more genuine way, and also share interesting information and give advice about what you do.

2. Try different types of media There are a lot of social media channels out there and you don’t need to be on all of them. Pick the right channels for your business and keep people interested with a mix of words, pictures and even videos. Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are a good place to start, then why not try blogging or posting videos on YouTube?

3. Be Useful By all means tell people about your new products, new services or special offers – but your social media strategy shouldn’t all be about this. You need to give something back to your followers and fans. For example, if you run a café, post recipes on your blog or cooking tips on your Facebook page.

4. Check that it’s working You need to find out if it is working. The general rule is that it takes 3 months to see if your social media strategies are worth spending time on. There are a number of tools out there to help you measure the success of your presence (Social Bro, Tweetreach, Klout), in terms of fans, followers, clicks and retweets.

5. Update regularly

Don’t disappear or people will forget you! This doesn’t mean you need to be on social media 24/7 – you wouldn’t have a business if you were. You can schedule regular updates with tools such as HootSuite and Tweetdeck. We are Tobi and Doris from Germany (Bavaria) and we run Sherbourne House Hotel in Attleborough. If you weren’t talking to us now, what would you be doing? D: Sorting through my paperwork T: Having a break or preparing the kitchen for the next run How would you spend your ideal day in the country? Go for a walk along the coast, go for a boat ride on the Broads and indulge in a delicious dinner afterwards. Just spend a relaxing day. What’s the best thing about living in a village? You meet people you know and can have a chat with them. Red or white? D: Red T: Blue (I know that’s not an option, but…) What’s your favourite word? D: Hilarious, Health T: Well done What’s your guiltiest pleasure? D: Salt & vinegar crisps T: Gummy bears Age you feel on the inside? Depends on the circumstances: early morning 50, but usually more like 24 Last saintly deed? Helping someone out at the supermarket till when he didn’t have enough cash. High point of your week is? How many hours do you work each week? About 100

What’s the best thing about running a hotel? The guests. You meet some really nice people and hear amazing life stories If you had a year off you would…… Travel the world (Asia, Australia, South America…) What keeps you awake at night? Nothing, I sleep like a stone. You could talk for hours about? Travelling and the countries we have been to Where would you most like to be right now? Some South Sea island paradise on the beach or snorkelling along the shoreline
