elcome to the December Village Tweet, celebrating a Christmas very different to last year’s, with COVID-19 restrictions making the season anything but festive. A glance at the What’s On pages will show that there is a huge choice of events and activities to choose from. Christmas trees are on sale again, carol services are ready to welcome you as, of course, are the local churches with services throughout the Christmas period. I would like to thank all who have contributed to Village Tweet throughout the year and of course the many businesses who have advertised with us during the hard times. Merry Christmas! Flexible Working Consultation – what does it mean for employees? The Government has launched a consultation seeking views on proposals to reform the rules around the right to request flexible working. The consultation closes on 1 December 2021.
What are employees’ rights to flexible working currently? At present, employees do not have the right to request flexible working until they have completed 26 weeks of continuous service with their employer. Importantly, this is a right to request and not a right to be granted a flexible working arrangement. Furthermore, employees may only make one request per year. As it stands, an employer must consider the request and reply within three months. They may decline the request, citing any of the following reasons: • Extra costs that will be a burden on the business • The work cannot be reorganised among other staff • People cannot be recruited to do the work • Flexible working will negatively affect quality • Flexible working will negatively affect performance • The ability to meet customer demand will be negatively affected • There is a lack of work to do during the proposed working times • The business is planning structural changes
The consultation was promised by the current Government in its 2019 manifesto and the subsequent impact of the pandemic and working practices has brought the issue more clearly into focus.
What is being considered in the consultation? The intention of the consultation is to modernise working practices and enable employees to find a better balance between their work and home life. As such, it considers a number of proposals, including giving employees the right to request flexible working from day one of their employment, whether the reasons for declining (as stated above) remain valid and whether an employee should be able to make a request more than once a year. It is proposed that if an employer cannot accommodate a request, as can be the case, they should think about what alternatives could be offered. A range of flexible working methods are available, including job‐ sharing, flexitime, compressed, annualised and staggered hours, and phased retirement – in addition to working from home. The Government has also announced that it intends to introduce legislation next year to make it easier for carers to balance their caring responsibilities with work.

Nigel Targett, Employment Partner at Coole Bevis, looks at the Government’s proposals to reform flexible working regulations
It remains to be seen what impact the consultation will have on employer’s attitudes to flexible working, however, it is a positive step forward for millions of employees. Please contact me if you would like advice on flexible working or any employment related matter.

What does Jesus’s birth mean for me?
T
he countdown to Christmas is all around us. Many of our homes have the joy of Advent calendars offering us treats to keep us going in the long-awaited day of joy on the 25th! Some of us feel like there are not enough days of waiting left as we rush about with our long Christmas ‘to do’ list. Waiting is a human experience full of emotions: frustration, excitement, anxiety, weariness, hope to name just a few. There will be some reading who have wonderful anticipation of meeting together this season that seems such a wonderful gift in this pandemic era. The waiting to open the doors to loved ones is poignant for others knowing there will be an empty chair around their Christmas table. The Bible is full of people waiting and longing. The birth of God’s son, the rescuer, is the answer to the deepest of waiting through
generations. Here, lying in an animal’s feeding trough is God’s son. This ‘good news’ changes history for ever and answers faithful waiting through the ages. Our loving God promised to always be with us. Here in the manger is love itself. Perhaps this year as the countdown to Christmas rolls speedily along we can use the ‘waiting’ in a new way. When we are waiting for the kettle to boil, the bus to arrive, the Christmas queue to move how about reflecting on this great question: what does Jesus’s birth into this world mean for us? How about giving yourself a present of time to wonder this Christmas? Join us this Christmas at St Mary’s. Please check our website for details of services: www.stmarysbillingshurst.org.

Last-minute Christmas cake
METHOD
1. Put the dried fruits in a bowl and pour over the whisky. Set aside for 30 minutes to allow the fruit to plump up. 2. Briefly blend the ginger and its syrup in a mini food processor until finely chopped. Preheat the oven to 160°C/fan140°C/gas 3. Grease and line a 20cm square cake tin. 3. Sift the flour, baking powder and mixed spice into a large bowl and add the rest of the ingredients except the cherries. Beat with a hand-held electric whisk for 2 minutes until pale and fluffy. Fold in the soaked dried fruits and any whisky, the blitzed ginger and the cherries. 4. Spoon into the baking tin and level off. Bake for 11¾ hours – time depends on your oven. To check, insert a skewer into the centre of the cake. If it comes out clean the cake is cooked. You can cover it loosely with foil after 1 hour if the centre needs more time. This prevents the surface darkening too much. Leave in the tin for 10 minutes, then place on a wire rack. 5. Remove a thin slice from all sides of the cake and discard. Cut the cake in half to make 2 rectangles. 6. Top with marzipan and white fondant icing and decorate with a sprig of holly.

C
elebrating 20 years, Billingshurst & District Lions Club’s Charity Bookshop in Jengers Mead has an updated sign together with new web address (billingshurstlions.org) where you can find all the latest club information, and also on Facebook. Inside the bookshop, jigsaws, DVDs and Paperback books are still priced at £1 each, Hardbacks £1.50 each and Children’s books five for £1. Recent donations have included some exceptional volumes and these are available at slightly increased prices, but still representing excellent value for money. Payment can be made by cash or card. The Bookshop is now open Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 9.30am until 3.30pm. Another Sign of the Times December is the time to look out for Santa and his Elves touring Billingshurst, Barns Green, Loxwood, Rudgwick, Slinfold and Wisborough Green from Friday 3rd until Saturday 18th. Santa will again be walking behind his ‘Flying Bedstead’, with its lights twinkling and bed knobs glowing, waving and wishing everyone Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
In another ‘Sign of the Times’, Santa may persuade Mrs Santa Claus to be with him to join in the fun, but sadly, this will not be possible every night. Santa’s routes and timetables will be posted on the new website (billingshurstlions.org) and on Facebook. Santa will again have his GPS Tracker ‘Track Santa’ for you to follow his whereabouts, by finding the link on the website or by downloading the ‘Track Server’ app and entering the user name BDLC. Donations will be gratefully received by the Elves in their socially distanced buckets on broom handles, on Just Giving (details on the website & Facebook), in the Bookshop, or by using the Feed the Lions collecting jars. Grateful thanks go to Station Garage, Broadbridge Heath, for the generous loan of a Skoda Octavia Estate car, PD Motors, Billingshurst, for the loan of batteries for the music and lights and DG Clifton & Sons at Wharf Farm, Newbridge, for out of season storage of Santa’s Bedstead. A Good Read A Christmas selection from Kath Bennett Christmas is a wonderful time to curl up with a book. The shelves are full of this year’s new and shiny celebrity offerings. But Christmas is surely a time for nostalgia. So, pour yourself a glass of eggnog or mulled wine and let’s visit Christmas Past… For Grown-Ups For a real nostalgia-fest and a lyrical description of times gone by, when ‘December was as white as Lapland though there were no reindeers’? dig out A Child’s Christmas in Wales by Dylan Thomas, preferably with Edward Ardizzone’s illustrations. Short, simple, and beautiful, it sums up Christmas with the uncles, snow on the ground and the myriad delights for a small boy on the best day of the year. If, however, you are feeling slightly less full of cheer and goodwill, Jilly Cooper might be more to your taste. The Christmas scene in Appassionata is one of my favourite depictions of the holiday, and every December I find myself turning first to How to Survive Christmas – bleak, witty and sometimes crushingly accurate, it is Cooper’s account of how to get through a typical festive season. Another excellent book with a brief but memorable Christmas sequence, is Angels and Men by Catherine Fox. It is hard to get hold of, but I promise you, Mara’s Christmas with her grandmother is not one you will forget – and the rest of the book is beautifully written, too. Finally, from the realms of fantasy, why not try Christmas Discworld style in Hogfather by Terry Pratchett? Was there ever a writer with a sharper wit? As you might expect, his Santa is quite different – for a start, those are pigs, not reindeer pulling his sleigh. And he seems a little on the bony side. What does Death have to do with Christmas? More than you might think… TO

For Kids For many people, The Snowman by Raymond Briggs is their Christmas classic of choice. I actually prefer his Father Christmas. Less saccharine and eloquently told with pictures and few words, it follows a curmudgeonly Santa on his journey around the globe, dropping off presents, struggling down chimneys, trudging upstairs, through all kinds of weather… “Merry Bloomin’ Christmas!” Another favourite is Dear Father Christmas by Jeanne Willis and Rosie Reeve. This picture book follows Mary as she writes her Christmas letter. Her wishes are different, as she doesn’t need any more toys – but an everlasting hamster and self-tying shoelaces would come in rather handy. Of course, there is a twist in the tale, but we don’t see it coming, and my kids read it over and over again – even at the height of summer. If you liked the Jolly Postman, then you will love The Jolly Christmas Postman by Janet & Allan Ahlberg. As you might expect, there are a range of letters to open, with cards, games and even a jigsaw puzzle for the lucky nursery rhyme characters on his rounds. An absolute delight. And finally... how could we look at Christmas without mentioning the two biggest Christmas classics ever? I mean of course, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and The Night Before Christmas by Clement C Moore. I know you have seen a million and one adaptations of the former (The Muppets do it best!), but the book really is worth a read. Be honest, when else are you going to curl up by the fire with a Dickens novel if not during a long snowy holiday? Try it. As for the former, we read it aloud every Christmas Eve, just before the lights go out. I stole this tradition from a friend, and I am passing it on to you. Merry Christmas!

Rising to the carbon reduction challenge – Pop-up and rock-up!
A
n eco 1974 milk float, pop-up shop and popup climate emergency centre – what do they all have in common? They are all initiatives offered by multi-award-winning charity Sussex Green Living, to help people reduce their carbon footprint. It might be hot air in Glasgow but not at the grassroots where this charity is concerned. On the first day of COP26 the charity became part of a new pop-up shop in Horsham. As reported in October’s Village Tweet they popped up their first once-a-month climate emergency centre, the Sussex Green Hub, on 25th September (in the United Reform Church, 45 Springfield Road, Horsham RH12 1PT – behind Wilko just off West Street – last Saturday of the month, 10am-4pm) and earlier in the year saw the first appearance of their unique and quirky mobile eco display, a 1974 retrofitted milk float, called the Inspiration Eco Station, and the launch of their Bright New Future Roadshow. With the urgent need to educate the public and children about the solutions to the climate crisis, Sussex Green Living have harnessed different ways to engage with the general public and schools. Carrie Cort, the founder and CEO of this charity, said, “This year we have taken our Bright New Future Roadshow to 20 public events. We worked with 10 schools in West Sussex and 8 in East Sussex, working with Rampion Visitor Centre and Sussex Wildlife Trust, engaging with about 1,549 pupils in total.”. Paul Bellringer, Chair of Trustees for this charity, added, “Thanks to grants from Sussex Community Foundation and Horsham District Council, our Inspiration Eco Station has been out on the road once or twice a week, allowing us to get right in the hearts of villages and towns, sharing ways people can reduce their carbon footprint.”
Carrie continues, “We are helping to build a safer, healthier and fairer world for all, enabling us to hand over a planet and future worth inheriting to the next generation. There is no room for delay, no room for talk, it is code red for humanity and time for action from all. The solutions are all out there for the taking!” The Sussex Green Hub’s next appearance is on Saturday 18th December, 10-4pm at the United Reformed Church (behind Wilko). The Inspiration Eco Station will be in the Bishopric (in front of Wilko) and will be focusing on what people can recycle in the council bins, through our singleuse plastic recycling (as found at The Chapel in Billingshurst) and what people can recycle through the big supermarkets now. We will have a big display promoting recycling crisp packets at Christmas and there afterwards! In the Sussex Green Hub we are inviting people to come and make upcycled Christmas Crackers for Life from materials found at: www.sussexgreenliving.co.uk/ ideas-for-a-greener-christmas-in-horsham. We will have small selection of upcycled Christmas gifts for sale and pre-loved Christmas jumpers. Our Youth Eco Forum are planning a Green Christmas Funrun around the town on 18th December wearing green or secondhand clothes and promoting the Sussex Green Hub. So come and join in the fun! Learn more about the Sussex Green Living Inspiration Eco Station, which is part of their Bright New Future Roadshow, at www.sussexgreenliving.co.uk/bright-new-futureroadshow and the Sussex Green Hub www.sussexgreenliving.co.uk/sussex-green-hub. Plant a Tree for Jubilee In support of the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, the Parish Council is hoping to plant more trees in the parish. Last autumn, 27 trees were planted around the parish, funded by Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) held by the Council, and proved very popular leading to requests from residents for even more trees. The Council is now asking residents to suggest further locations for trees and also inviting donations which the Council will match on a £ for £ basis from its CIL fund. It costs £200 to supply and plant each sturdy standard-sized specimen. Suggestions for sites must be for land deemed highway, which in the main are grass verges. (If in doubt, send in your suggestions anyway.) Please send a simple
sketch map to the Parish Office, by post or e-mail. Each site will be assessed for suitability in terms of sightlines, underground utilities etc. Donations can be way of cheques payable to Billingshurst Parish Council or via BACS: Billingshurst Parish Council / Sort code 60-02-31 / AC No. 95980784. Please put TREE DONATION as the reference. Trees will be planted in the autumn of 2022.

A mistle-toast of thanks from the Renegades!
I
t’s a noisy round of Santa-plause from the young members of the Renegades Youth Club after Christmas has come early this year. After years of planning and fundraising, the club has finally taken delivery of all the Enigma Turing 16 canoes (in Renegade colours of purple and red of course!), trailer and equipment that is needed to run sessions on the water for the children. Huge thanks must go to the Postcode Society Trust who gave the club a grant of nearly £20K which will also pay for the tuition for leaders and parents to become qualified instructors. “The children were beyond excited and can’t wait to get out on the water,” says Group Leader Gareth Miller. “Once we have sorted out the training and have registered the boats, look out for us on Sunday mornings on the Arun… I’ll be the one covered in pondweed! “The boats will each be named after people who have been important to the inception and to the ongoing success of the club.” But that wasn’t the only good news to celebrate. The National Lottery have once again stepped in to help us. “The National Lottery have been fantastic,” says
Gareth. “This month they gave us £2k to buy an extensive larder for the cookery sessions and to cater for activity sessions and trips away as part of our COVID-19 recovery plans.” The Foyle Foundation has very generously helped with the club’s general running costs. “This is particularly helpful,” says Gareth. “Most grants don’t cover this sort of thing and those costs can eat up all the disposable money and stop activities. “Loxwood Fête, where we took an archery stall, have donated a staggering £500 and Wisborough Green Fête donated a very welcome £250 – both huge amounts considering the fund-raising effort that has taken. “As Christmas approaches, we are totally sleigh-ed by the generosity people have shown the club and the faith they have put in our young members. Happy Christmas to all!” The Renegades is a Registered Charity. Membership costs £10 a month. Please contact Gareth Miller on 07801 862550 or Damian Dixon on 07484 130189 for further information. An early Christmas present
Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…
A
t the end of October Nanny and Sara rook a road trip. They hadn’t done a road trip like this since they went to Leicester in the early noughties. Now, here they were again and for just about the same reason. Then it was to get her birthday present and now it was to get Nan’s early Christmas present. It all started last summer when Nanny met a lady at the caravan who had six chihuahuas. Nanny acknowledged that, as Magnus was getting older, she wanted another chihuahua. She really wanted a rescue dog but there weren’t any to be had so she looked and looked online because Magnus’ breeder wasn’t breeding at the moment. She hummed and hawed between a real puppy and an a older puppy. At last she found one six-monthold little girl whose photo showed her to be really cute. So it was arranged and now Sara and she were en route to “look at the puppy”. After a few wrong turns they arrived to be greeted by a tiny chocolate noise box. A yapper. Nanny’s heart sank. Undaunted, she and Sara sat down and the lady picked up the noise box and put her on Sara’s knee. The puppy quivered with fear. Oh no, a nervous scaredy noise box. Nanny’s heart sank further. After a little while, Magnus disgraced himself and piddled on a cabinet. The lady wasn’t a bit alarmed and cleaned up, so Nan didn’t find herself too embarrassed. After a getting-to-know-you cuddle and stroke, they all went outside for a romp in the garden. Magnus was happy, puppy was happy, Sara was happy, the lady more hopeful and Nanny a bit more happy. After some more cuddles and strokes Nanny asked Sara with a look and Sara nodded. The transaction was done. The dogs were loaded into the car with Poppy – such was puppy’s name – on Sara’s lap, just this once, and home they went. On way they stopped at a café for some lunch
because the humans were starving. Dogs were allowed so Magnus sat on a chair and puppy sat on Sara’s lap. Poppy quivered. Although it was noisy she coped okay. When they arrived home, the whole family, except Gary (wasn’t keen), came to greet the new arrival. She did so well. With two strange dogs much bigger than her Nanny was looking after a neighbour’s dog for a few days) and several new people she finally stopped shaking and enjoyed the limelight. She ate a little bit of dinner and went to bed with only a few squeaks of protest. Poppy had some adventures that first week or so. She went to the caravan with Nan and Grandad and made a her debut, met lots of other dogs on the big dog walk. She managed that with great enthusiasm helped by big brother who was an real socialiser. One marvellous part of her character was she actually came when Nanny said, “Poppy, come”. What a treat that was for Nanny because Magnus was terrible in that department. While Nanny was winterising the swimming pool, Poppy thought she’d hop over onto the black plastic cover. It was only floating on the top and her back end fell in. Quick as a flash she was rescued. With her tiny feet she could walk around on the cover as if it was dry land. A few days later she was helping Nanny sweep the sheep shed. When she wandered off to explore, she made the acquaintance of the electric fence. With an unearthly scream she ran out the gate across the field, under another gate and into the laundry to tell Grandad all about it. That was just her first two weeks. Nanny was pleased with her new, early Christmas present. Poppy joins Magnus, Nanny and Grandad to wish you all a Happy Peaceful Christmas from everyone here on that small farm near Billingshurst. It’s Pantomime time: Aladdin
Reduced seating capacity for January’s Panto – tickets on sale now
P
anto is back… lots of fun for everyone… Widow Twankey, a beautiful princess, a Genie, a magic carpet… oh, and a pantomime camel! Barns Green Players are back and it’s Panto time again! This January, we will be performing Aladdin. It will be the first show for two years so everyone is very excited and desperately keen to get back on stage to entertain you. We have introduced strict COVID19 checks and testing procedures for everyone involved in the production and of course this will be extended to our audiences as well. As a result, this year, we will have a greatly reduced audience capacity. We will only have 128 seats instead of our usual 180 for each performance. This will enable greater distancing between rows of seats which will give people more space and hopefully more peace of mind. There will be a total of seven shows performed over two weekends. The shows will be in the Barns Green Village Hall on Friday 14th January (evening), Saturday 15th (afternoon and evening), Sunday 16th (afternoon), Friday 21st (evening), and Saturday 22nd (afternoon and evening). The afternoon performances begin at 2pm and evening performances at 7.30pm. Neale Francis is the Director this year. “I am really excited about this year’s show. Aladdin is a classic

Pantomime story and it will give our wonderful cast of actors, dancers and singers a chance to display their full range of talents. It will also create some big challenges for our technical department as there are lots of magical special effects! We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at one of the performances”. There will be singalongs and sweets for the kids and opportunities for the audience to join in with the fun with lots of shouting and screaming. For the evening performances there is a licensed bar serving a variety of drinks as well as sweets. If you are regulars at the Barns Green Players Panto you will know just what a terrific show they put on and if you haven’t been before you are in for a real treat. Tickets cost just £14 for adults and £10 for children. (All tickets on both Saturday evenings are £14) There is a special price of just £10 for all tickets on Friday 14th January. Tickets are available direct from the website; www.barnsgreenplayers.co.uk or through the box office (01403) 730017. We look forward to welcoming you for some great fun and entertainment. hristmas is coming folks. No turkeys, no presents, no booze… or so we have been warned for the last three months. Somehow, though, I think we will survive. It’s amazing how we do, despite the doom and gloom that the media delivers to us on a daily basis. No point buying stuff too early anyway, there’s no room in the cupboard, it’s full of toilet rolls! One thing I have become aware of over the last 18 months or so is that there appears to have been a proliferation of pets. Everywhere you go so many folk seem to have the company of an extra four legs trotting alongside them. Big dogs, little dogs, snuffling squat-nosed dogs, and some apparently called labradoodles, cockapoos, puggles, and even goldendoodles. Sorry if I upset some folks……but weren’t those last four types once just called mongrels? Anyway, I wanted to reminisce about a couple of pets that I hold dear to my own heart. Not dogs this time – although I do love them too – but those other four-legged house dwellers. Cats. I have a soft spot for cats, although I believe it’s true you never own one. They own you. They rule… and you submit. If you should refuse, they’re off! It’s this independence that I find so wonderful about these critters. They like to come and go as their will takes them, eating – or not – according to their own personal whim. You can fuss them providing they are willing, or if they demand to be fussed. The two that I regard with fond memories were both true farm cats. Born to females that lived a semi-feral life around the farmyard. Both fathered by the wandering local Tom who would tour his quite large domain, seeking out the Queens who had called for his services. The first was a long-furred male kitten who I selected from the litter because of his beautiful green eyes. We called him Sooty, so you can guess his colouring. He grew quickly both in size and in our affections. He had one bad habit. We lived at that time near the river at Wisborough Green. He loved to go after the water rats at night where his black coat made him invisible to all

but the most wary. He would bring them into the house via an open window vent – still alve – and then play with them up and down the long corridor as we slept behind a firmly shut bedroom door. In the morning the only sign of his adventures would be a lone gall bladder, left behind the bedroom door as what I assume was either a tiny gift, or, and I think this is more likely, he just didn’t like that particular morsel! He only ceased these playtime events after one rat succeeded in giving him a nasty bite on the tail which quickly became infected. Several vet visits and a lancing plus injections cured him, but he never forgot and henceforth they were brought home dead as a doornail. (Where does that simile come from?) The other cat, a few years later, was a magnificent ginger specimen who we called Cindy. As the name may suggest this time a female who wore a coat of exceedingly long fur. Living in the countryside this required constant long cleaning sessions, which involved much licking and spitting, to keep it in good condition. She loved a fuss, but had a unique way of saying when the time was up. She just buried both teeth and claw in the hand that caressed her. The switch from peaceful contented purring to feline assassin was remarkably swift. You quickly got the message. In winter you would wake in the night to find she had buried herself under the bedclothes and was curled contentedly by your feet. You moved at your peril. The slightest twitch and you would leap from the bed with a cat firmly attached to your ankle, while you uttered strangled curses about her parentage. This surely though is why we love our pets. They give us memories. They become solid members of our families. They somehow return the love we give a thousandfold. So, whatever animal is entwined round your heartstrings at the moment, enjoy them. Let them bring you memories that you will never forget. Let them sit at your feet or beside you on the settee, or on your lap. Feel them curled at the foot of the bed and know that they love you. Happy Christmas. x John Nash

ow! it’s December already! Where has the time gone? Mum has only gone and got our coats out of their summer hibernation and is insisting we wear them when it’s cold and wet, not I hasten to add is she worried about us getting muddy and wet as we are weatherproof boys but she hates having to wash the floors and walls after we shake mud all over them! I think it’s hilarious and Mav, I have to say, is really good at it as his tail is longer than mine and wags furiously ensuring a really good pebbledash effect right up the wall! The days are really short now so we do a lot of our exercise and training in the dark. We have our lovely flashing collars so mum can see us in the field at night and it’s been amazing going to the beach first thing – mum is loving the fact it’s empty of people and Mav is loving the

fact it’s full of seagulls – mum isn’t loving that as she’s trying to stop Mav chasing them! I encourage him as much as I can just to make sure he gets in plenty of trouble; the best bit is when I manage to move some from behind a breakwater right in front of him so he takes off after them! He really should make a debut at a Greyhound race. Mum is talking about getting ready for Christmas. I love Christmas as I get steak for dinner and lots of yummy treats, as does mum. She spends the day filling her face with chocolate (which is strictly off limits to us spaniels) and has the cheek to call me fat! I shall be overseeing preparation and plating of the Christmas dinner as usual because I can use my absolute cuteness to claim a nice portion of delicious roast lamb (they are not turkey fans here!). Mav just sits out of the way as he’s a goody two shoes but I like to take up residence under the kitchen bench then point at the meat while staring with my best sad dog look – that always gets me a tasty morsel! The only thing I can’t understand about Christmas is how mum brings a whole tree in the house yet she won’t let me bring my favourite log indoors, using the excuse that it’s yucky and has been buried in the garden for ages. We have been on some fantastic walks recently – even in the winter the countryside is beautiful and we have explored lots of new places. I have been on my best behaviour and that paid off because I got some sneaky treats from Mum’s pub lunch. We had such a long walk that day that Mav was really tired and just flaked on the way home, so I sat on him and used him as a cushion as he didn’t have the energy to object! Mum thought it was cute and I was reaffirming my place at the top of the heirachy! I heard mum and dad talking about puppies the other day. I know Mav would be delighted to have one around the place, but I will make it known how much I disapprove if they attempt to bring one home! I really don’t want another carpet alligator hanging off my ear having clamped on with its needle teeth, I think I would rather go and live in the shed! So another year almost gone, let’s look forward to the next one and hope it’s a happy one! Jeannette Douglas

Simple winter tasks
T
his year’s festive season (at least at the time of writing), is shaping up to be a little more ‘normal’, whatever that term now means. While most of us are looking forward to more socialising and togetherness, I’m betting a fair few might think back fondly to last year’s smaller, quieter Christmas. And this is where the garden comes into its own. There are always things to do out there, even in December. A few simple gardening tasks offer some pockets of calm and relief amid the busyness of the festive season. They are also a wonderful way to get some fresh air and exercise to burn off those Christmas calories and winter gloominess! First, take a look at your winter containers. If you have a particularly wet spell, make sure they don’t get flooded. If it’s dry, then plants will still need water regularly, just give the compost a chance to dry out each time. Pick off any leaves that look yellowed or diseased. Do you like garlic? I love it. Now is the perfect time to start your own garlic crop, especially if, like mine, your soil is free-draining. Plant individual cloves of garlic. ‘Solent Wight’ is a great variety for our greyer British climate and forms large plump bulbs. If you have a sheltered warmer spot try ‘Lautrec Wight,’ which as its name suggests originates from the French town of Lautrec. It produces particularly handsome pink/purple cloves and is widely regarded in France as the best garlic. Snip off any wispy ends or the birds will pull cloves from the soil (I learned that one from experience!). The bulbs will be ready to harvest when the leaves start to die off and turn yellow, which is usually around June or July.

Tidy established perennials by cutting back those that have become pulpy. Simply cut back the decaying material, chop it up and add it to the compost heap. If you have an unheated greenhouse, a summer house or conservatory you can sow some sweet peas and leave them to germinate. Sow the seeds in deep pots or roottrainers filled with multi-purpose compost then keep the pots in a propagator or cover them with a transparent plastic bag. Once seeds have germinated, remove the covering. If the soil isn’t frozen, you can plant bare-root fruit bushes such as gooseberries, raspberries, and blackberries. Make sure you dig a hole that can take the plant’s roots comfortably without squashing them. Then label them clearly because it’s easy to forget which varieties you're growing! Finally, if you’re looking for the perfect gift for the gardener in your life please can I recommend Gold Leaf Winter Touch gloves. They have a Thinsulate™ thermal lining which keeps hands toasty warm even in the coldest weather, AND an additional Ski-Dri™ waterproof, breathable lining so your hands remain dry even when used in the wet! I also love the reinforced palm because it’s great for spade work. As you can tell, I love mine, and I am neither sponsored by nor connected with the company in any way; mine were a recent gift and I’ve been raving about them to anyone who will listen ever since! Happy Gardening! Rachel Leverton

“The WI is what you make it”
O
ur President, Shirley Flint, stepped down in October after four years and will be much missed by the Billingshurst WI community. So now it is on to pastures new… Our monthly meetings re-convened in September with a welcome back tea party, and a special 100th Birthday present for our eldest member, Audrey Wilkes. Also, as a thank you for their help and support particularly during lockdown and the subsequent vaccination programme, we gave a donation from WI members to the Community Transport team in the village. Their work is much appreciated by members and their families. The September meeting enjoyed a talk from Dr Helena Griffiths on her travels throughout Australia demonstrating the different culture and Australian way of life. October was the WI’s Annual Meeting and we welcomed in Teri Cranmer and Denise Waller as Joint Presidents. We were delighted to have a number of visitors during September and October and, hopefully, can look forward to them joining us as members soon. At the time of writing, we are looking forward to our
November meeting with the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance team talking to us about their role in the community. The December meeting will see Ann Chance entertaining us with a musical extravaganza of festive fun during our last meeting before Christmas. Speakers in the New Year include Aaron Barton from Billingshurst Surgery and Jan Thompson on What’s in the basket – a talk on the history of the basket. As always, we will enjoy quizzes, tea parties and supporting our high profile National Campaigns. Billingshurst WI uses Facebook and posters around the village to keep our members up to date with news and events and, if times get tough again, we can always sign up for one of the hundreds of online events offered by our learning organisation, Denman at Home (www.denman.org.uk). Visitors are always welcome at our meetings held on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 2.30pm in the Stanley Room at the Community Centre. Billingshurst Royal British Legion Remembrance Parade and Ceremony
T
his year we marked 100 years since the nation’s collective Remembrance traditions were first brought together. Remembrance Sunday, fell on 14th November and this was Billingshurst’s opportunity to remember the service and sacrifice of all those that have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life. The Parade marched-off from Frenches Mead, to the War Memorial, where our local Remembrance Ceremony took place at 11am. During the service we paid respects for those members that we lost during the pandemic. Following the Ceremony, the Reverend David Beal held a Special Remembrance Service at St Mary’s Church. The Parade through the Village to the War Memorial and afterwards, back along the High Street to the Billingshurst Community Centre, was kindly organised and marshalled by the Billingshurst Parish Council, who agreed to take on the responsibility for the road closures, which allowed the parade to take place. The Parade was led by Legion Branch Chair, Rob

Nicholl, with the salute being received, along the route by Colin Banks, Branch President, alongside Parish Council Chair, Paul Berry and president of the Billingshurst & District Lions Club, Richard Melcio. To help comply with the Legion’s guidelines to minimise COVID-19 exposure, Scouts & Guide groups laid their wreaths in the week leading up to Remembrance Sunday. One afternoon our President was pleased to be able to join a parent and five children from a local primary school to help lay remembrance crosses in St Mary’s cemetary. Our collectors have been at the heart of the Poppy Appeal for 100 years. Last year they were unable to carry out face to face collections, but this year they returned to our local community. We will soon announce how much the local Poppy Appeal has generously raised. For further information about the work of the Royal British Legion Branch, please contact Rob Nicholl, Branch Chair, e-mail: billingshurst.chairman@rbl.community Graeme McAlpine, Press Officer Photo: Scouts and Guides, 2021 Remembrance Parade

Merry Christmas from Billingshurst Fire Station
W
e would like to wish all of our readers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Very much like 2020 we have had to adapt to changes throughout the year with the pandemic still impacting everyone. It was good to see restrictions slightly lifted in the spring so that we could get back to some kind of normality. We still have quite a few restrictions within the service to try and avoid the spread of COVID-19. We have not been able to complete our usual community fire safety visits but we hope next year we will be able to welcome back groups and visit our local schools to promote fire protection and prevention. We will certainly be holding another Charity Car Wash in March and with a bit of luck, and Open Day in the summer. It’s been a busy year again at Billingshurst Fire Station with crews responding to around 500 calls. Well done to the committed crew of 13 who have been on-call during the past twelve months protecting their community. A big thank you to the
local businesses who have let their employees leave when called out. We would also like to thank the families whose partners are Retained Firefighters, as I’m sure when our pagers go off it can be inconvenent. Pagrs interrupt kids’ bedtime routines, family get-togethers or the dreaded washing up duties (lucky for some I’m sure)! Either way, we know when we are called out it puts pressure on our partners to get things done without our help, so thank you for supporting us. Hopefully we all get to spend some quality time with our families over the festive period, but of course we will be on-call to keep everyone safe this Christmas. We are very much looking forward to 2022 here at the Fire Station, so until then, have a safe, fun and enjoyable Christmas. The Arts Society Rudgwick Rudgwick Village Hall has been the home of The Arts Society Rudgwick (formerly the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Society, NADFAS) for 37 years. We are a very friendly, sociable group that meet once a month for ten months of the year from October to July. During the lockdown periods we successfully streamed live lectures online via Zoom webinar but we were very pleased to be able to meet again in Rudgwick Village Hall for our October meeting. Our first lecture of the season was given by John Benjamin, jewellery consultant and contributor to BBC’s Antiques Roadshow. The lectures are usually on the first Thursday of the month, beginning at 10.45am and finishing at 12 noon. Tea and coffee are served from 10am to 10.30am. We also offer an interesting selection of visits to places of historic or artistic interest and, from time to time, we organise trips away. Annual membership is £39. If you are interested in joining or would like more information, please contact our membership secretary Chris Robinson on (01483) 274455 or email chrisrobinson@redcedar.org.uk
