For New Yorker Athena Calderone, there are no rules when it comes to inspiring herself and others. She arranges tumblers, highball glasses and a bowl in amber from the Colour Concept range for a small get-together around the rustic wooden table. A mix of natural wood, bright fine glass, design classics and Indian fabrics. “A relaxed bohemian vibe in contrast to the hustle and bussle of the city,” says Athena, describing the style of her roof terrace, which is situated in the district of Dumbo. Located in the New York borough of Brooklyn, the residential neighbourhood derives its unusual name from an acronym for ‘Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass’, and is becoming an increasingly popular area in close proximity to Manhattan.

Interior designer Athena Calderone and her husband Victor have achieved what many dream of: the best of both worlds. They commute between their 250 square metre penthouse with its views of Brooklyn Bridge in Manhattan, and a heavenly hideaway in East Hampton. We pay them a double visit: above the roofs of Brooklyn and beneath the trees in the Hamptons. ·6·

Awe-inspiring views of Brooklyn Bridge and the financial district of Lower Manhattan. “I especially love the twinkle of the lights and the silhouette of the skyscrapers at dusk,” enthuses Athena.
“There is a part of me that loves nature, and I love to mix it with modern materials,” says the former model. Brightly coloured flowers and fruit lend a warm atmosphere and darker tones a fresh touch. Even her penchant for fashion is impossible to ignore. She admits (as most women will) that every so often, she finds something in her wardrobe and exclaims, “Oh, wow! e haven’t used our terrace overlooking Manhattan this summer at all yet!” exclaims the New Yorker while she expertly arranges glasses on a large wooden table. “When we moved here last year, we had to rearrange everything,” admits Athena, blinking in the sun. “There were just white walls and a bland design.” Bland – a word that goes against the very core of this interior designer, which is why she had everything painted in a deep blue-grey tone she describes as “inspiring”. New flooring was also laid. “There are certain palettes I love. Moody ones inspired by the sea or the skyline at dusk. Or contrasting ones that combine natural hues with bright pops of colour,” explains the style expert. “I choose to add pops of colour in art and accessories. When I use colour, I like to use it in a bold and somewhat shocking way.” Athena’s husband, Victor Calderone, admits with a smile, “We have long become experts in moving house and renovating – we’ve even made it our profession!” Born in Brooklyn with Italian roots, he is also a famous DJ and takes to the decks in some of the best clubs in the world. He has produced albums and remixes for stars like Madonna, Beyoncé Knowles, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson and Sting. Fuelled by Athena’s natural flair for exciting interior design, they have already transformed numerous apartments into true masterpieces. “Every space is a new beginning – a new challenge.”

Dinner guests are expected this evening, including John Rawlins, their partner in the interior design company Rawlins Calderone. It’s the perfect excuse to try out something new: today, a table runner hand-made from pages of old books, sheet music and poetry adorns the table, alongside delicate paper place cards under little glass bells. “A beautifully set table, moody lighting, saturated colour, incredible local food …” She gives the laid table a satisfied look. “Nothing is more elegant and intriguing than being invited to an intimate dinner party with friends. First and foremost you want to keep that relaxed mood for your guests!” Food will be served on Modern Grace by Villeroy&Boch. “It has this perfect balance of modern and classic – absolutely timeless. I love its grey!” Nevertheless, the brand’s new La Classica Nuova range has also stolen her heart (see Athena’s design idea below left). When listening to Athena, it doesn’t take long to realise that this is love. A passion for detail, combining pretty things, playing with possibilities – quite simply, bringing things together. “I love putting my stamp on both design and food! And to inspire other people!”

I took a very modern white space and injected deep navy blue to make the space feel moody. While making the final touches, she takes a moment to show us the art she also collects. We ask her what’s on the menu tonight. “Pasta tossed with zucchini, fresh mint, pine nuts, ricotta. Grilled jumbo prawns on skewers with a lemon herb sauce.” Athena reveals how she got into cooking. “My love for cooking and barbecuing began with the book BBQ for Dummies!” she laughs heartily. “I found it at a friend’s house!” Today, she speaks at food and food styling conferences and enjoys huge success with her food and style blog eye-swoon.com. “The interiors also happened by accident through designing my own spaces with my dear friend and now business partner, John Rawlins. He helped me see that I had a unique eye in curating a room and encouraged me to refine and further my ‘knack for design’ and go back to school,” she says, explaining how she arrived at interior design. “So when my son was three, I went back to school and interned for a year at a few boutique design firms in NYC.” Athena is truly multi-talented. “I tried on many hats throughout my 20s and early 30s – modelling, acting, singing, styling, cooking, design – you name it; I wanted to be it! I suppose for years I felt embarrassed by all my creative ramblings and often felt fragmented. Through eye-swoon, all those bits of myself found a home and a voice. So I guess my advice is to dip your toes into all that you love and all that you can because life is training for who knows what.”

CREATIVE SUGGESTION Athena believes that you should always be open to new ideas. She made the table runner by sticking book pages and sheet music together with wallpaper paste. The guests’ names are written on little pieces of paper and placed under pretty glass bells. Yellow figs and seasonal flowers bring dashes of colour to the arrangement, in addition to the dark blue napkins that also match the walls. Spaghetti drizzled with the finest Italian olive oil is served on Modern Grace Grey.

Not far away is the beach where Athena is learning to surf. Her son Jivan, whose name is Hindi for ‘to give life’, is already a pro and rides the waves with local surfers. The expert surfers always keep a close eye on the youngsters, meaning that Jivan can surf whenever he pleases.

The house in Amagansett at the end of Long Island is a three-hour drive from Brooklyn. The summer residence was built in the 1960s and was renovated by Athena and Victor. “The house was purchased in 2010 and while it was immediately apparent that the bones of the house were incredible – dreamy mid-century modern – the building was in a shambles,” says Athena. “Bulbs of mould were growing on the ceiling and the home, engulfed by overgrown trees, stood frozen in time from 1960 with an (eeek) dead deer in the pool!” The architect was Paul Masi from Bates Masi Architecture, www.batesmasi.com

It takes the family around three hours by car to get from Brooklyn to their own special paradise: their home in Amagansett in the Hamptons at the end of Long Island. As soon as they discovered the abandoned 1960s house, they knew that it had the potential to become the perfect summer residence. “My Amagansett home is something I really treasure and feel incredibly proud of. Not just because of the way it looks, but because it completely transformed my family’s life. It brought us closer to nature, the ocean and each other, whilst also being the catalyst that defined my career in interior design.” Even her work has benefited from the hideaway. “It’s amazing, really, truly amazing what this house holds for me – in my heart and on my creative path.” We stand in the huge, open-plan kitchen that looks out over the inviting, blue swimming pool and towering trees. “I knew immediately that I wanted a warm, laid-back retreat where

the exterior and interior flowed seamlessly allowing a care-free, relaxed atmosphere. Sand on the floor? Don’t worry about it!” affirms the lively designer. “A revolving door of family and friends huddled around the kitchen and lounging by the pool – for sure. I did not want a modernist, austere home that felt too staged and precious.” As she chats, she rustles up a quick lunch on the terrace for all her visitors – and fresh summer herbs are a must. “I chop herbs – all day, all summer! I like to create a sensory experience. Most people comment on the scent of the fresh herbs when entering my house.” But why did they decide on the Hamptons, mostly known from glitzy TV shows and their population of ultra-rich New Yorkers? “We were never Hamptons people, had never done summer shares or spent time out here. Victor spends almost every weekend performing in places like Miami and Ibiza, so a part-time getaway didn’t seem to be on the cards.”

Favourite pieces: Athena collects old objects, especially wooden boards with a history that exudes a feeling of homeliness. The creative designer feels most at home in the kitchen. “I love to be in the kitchen; it‘s where I‘m happiest. My son loves making pesto and picking basil leaves in the garden,” reveals Athena as she prepares lunch. Fresh is foremost here, too. “But in 2008, my son Jivan and I visited Montauk while Victor was away. Jivan was rolling in the grass, running around, and climbing trees, and I felt that we needed that in our lives,” she says and looks up at the sky. “The colours on the horizon at sunset in Montauk are continually reflected in the interiors I create. The amazing imagery in cookbooks inspires me to create in the kitchen, and the foods I experience as I travel inspire me to bring new flavours into my cooking.” We are now sitting outside around a colourfully arranged table, enjoying lunch overlooking the pool. “It’s a time to recognise and honour the beautiful friendships and creative collaborations that have been born in this beachy environment. And more than anything, these languid days are about sipping wine, nibbling on Mediterranean bites and seeking inspiration from friends.” It was here in the family oasis, far from the hustle and bustle of New York, that she came upon the idea of her blog. “Eye-swoon became a way for me to group all those fragmented moments and give them one voice that speaks to all the sides of me – the design addict, the fashion lover, the food-obsessed, the mum, the wife. And hopefully it can do the same for people that share those interests and seek out inspiration.” Apart from delicious food and good friends who gather around her, beautifully arranged tables also set her heart racing. NEW HEIGHTS OF PERFECTION What makes the perfect barbecue? We asked two professionals who ought to know. Without further ado, renowned and popular chefs Johann Lafer and Steffen Henssler invited us over to their favourite havens – a picturesque vineyard and a cool roof terrace in the heart of Hamburg – for barbecue tips mouth-watering recipes and al fresco enjoyment. So who’s doing the cooking? Or should we say barbecuing?

As one of Germany’s most popular celebrity chefs, he can be seen in action practically every day on television. Before and after filming, he can be found in one of his restaurants. And when the Hamburgborn chef needs to switch off, it’s barbecue time with his friends on the roof terrace – and we wouldn’t miss it for the world!
“An entire life life dedicated to good taste.” Judging by this statement, it almost sounds as if the charismatic master chef has sacrificed his life to the connoisseur cause. We meet him for a gourmet barbecue at a vineyard near Stromburg, where he runs his restaurant and hotel.

Nestled in the heart of the cultural landscape of the Middle Rhine wine region (UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley since July 2002) lie the picturesque Stahleck Castle, which is now used as a youth hostel, and the Bernhard Praß winery in Bacharach-Steeg.
T
he smell of barbecued lobster wafts through the air as the exotic aromas of Asia tantalise the taste buds and ‘Riesling S Feinherb’ from the Bernhard Praß winery fills the glasses. This is true happiness. As good as it gets. Up here in a vineyard amidst the unique cultural landscape of Germany’s Middle Rhine, Johann Lafer has discovered it for himself. Quite by chance, which also sowed the seeds of a firm friendship. The passionate helicopter pilot fell in love with this breathtaking panorama during one of his flights around Stromburg, and immediately set about finding a way to use the location to share his culinary art with others. With friends and guests. The vineyard in which Breton lobster now sizzles on the barbecue, soon to be followed by organic, locally grown beef, belongs to Bernhard Praß, who offered the chef the opportunity to fulfil his ambition to cook great food in the heart of nature, with Stahleck Castle as a majestic backdrop. Lafer opts for porcelain from Villeroy&Boch. “I recently read a recipe book that was hand written in 1835. Back then, Villeroy&Boch was already 87 years old. Such a traditional company is something extra-special today. For me, traditions are absolutely essential as the basis of creativity – when they are understood, used and then interpreted in an individual way.” In the little free time he has, Johann Lafer likes nothing better than standing in front of the barbecue, surrounded by nature. This is where he can best unwind, relax and try out new things. Just a few moments of watching Lafer prepare is enough to know exactly where his success originates. His perfection is contagious. Every glass, every spice, every detail receives his full attention. Not constrained by convention. Adventurous. Always curious whether this or that could be done, decorated, or combined differently. Isn’t Michelin-star barbecuing exhausting? Can you be relaxed whilst constantly striving to reach higher and further? He laughs. “For me, a connoisseur is someone who uses all of the senses to achieve true happiness. This can be attained through a gourmet menu or simply some good bread with a fine glass of wine, or even being at one with nature. The connoisseur always values the quality of enjoyment and the specific moment. It has nothing to do with luxury or price. The view from here is something that everyone can afford – as long as they own a sturdy pair of shoes!”
In his free time, Johann Lafer likes nothing better than standing in front of the barbecue, surrounded by nature. “This is where I can completely switch off and breathe,” says the top chef, gazing down over the Rhine and the slowmotion trail of boats. This sense of freedom is equally important in preparing the food, as Lafer explains that not only the quality of the ingredients, but also the ambience is crucial for the connoisseur.

Nature is Lafer’s passion – it’s in his blood. Born in the Austrian region of Styria and brought up on his parents’ farm, his affinity with nature, animals and plants has shaped him and accompanied him throughout his career. “I learned respect for nature there. For me, cooking is no cheap razzle-dazzle Punch and Judy show or spectacle. I don’t try to fry schnitzel upright just so customers say, ‘Johann, you’re the best!’.” In 1988, during the early days of the two Michelin star restaurant Le Val d’Or, he even managed to cook his way into the heart of his future wife, Silvia. She started by giving him the responsibility of running the kitchen before later giving him her hand in marriage. They have remained loyal to the region, and now run their company in the 11C town of Stromburg, not far from the idyllic Praß vineyard. His biggest passion has always been the sweet things in life – Johann Lafer took his first steps to success as a pâtissier, inspired by the many wonderful pastries and cakes made by his mother. Today, the finale of his menu is grilled apple and pear millefeuille, accompanied by a delicious 2006 Riesling Auslese with a delicate sweetness. As we dip our spoons into the Valrhona chocolate, silence descends. Up here, all that can be heard is the rustling of vine leaves and the flickering of candles. Down in the valley, the boats continue placidly along their route. Johann Lafer, too, falls silent and enjoys the moment.

BERNHARD PRASS WINERY The Praß winery is a family-run company that dates back to 1510. To accompany Johann Lafer’s lobster with grilled Thai mango, they have recommended the ‘Riesling S Feinherb’ . It complements the dominant mango whilst highlighting the delicate vanilla flavour of the dish. In addition to the region’s unique Riesling, the vineyards are used to cultivate distinctive Spätburgunder, Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder and Dornfelder. Halve the lobster meat lengthwise, season with salt and mix with the peanut oil, herbs and spices. Brush the grill (of the barbecue) with vegetable oil and barbecue the lobster over indirect heat at 140 °C to 160 °C, lid closed, for three to four minutes. Season the lobster with pepper and slice shortly before serving. For the vinaigrette, 30 ml white balsamic vinegar, 30 ml chicken stock, 50 ml peanut oil, 1 tsp acacia honey, vanilla and add fine salt and ground chilli.
Halve the mango. Mix the juice and zest of the limes with the brown sugar and brush onto the mango. Brush the grill with vegetable oil and place the mango halves on the grill with the cut edge facing downwards. Close the lid and barbecue for three to four minutes at approximately 180 °C to 200 °C. Halve the leek lengthwise and cut into rings. Cut the mango into cubes and mix with the leek and half of the vinaigrette. Season with salt and chilli. Halve the avocados, remove the stone, brush with lemon juice and barbecue for four to five minutes. Remove from the skin and cut into pieces.

AGED IN TRADITION. THE MUSTHAVE STEAKS The dry aged trend: this is the most coveted steak amongst meat lovers. Dry means that it has not been matured in a vacuum bag (or wet, as it is often known as today), but rather open on the bone as was done in our forefathers’ time. The ageing process lasts up to 28 days, and strict attention is paid to humidity, ambient temperature and air circulation. This not only gives the meat more flavour, but also a rich colour and extreme tenderness. This all takes time – the minimum ageing period is two weeks. The motto here is the longer, the better. The taste of a mature T-bone or rib-eye steak is difficult to beat!

HOT STUFF There are two correct moments to season food. Either before it is placed on the barbecue or after it is cooked. THE RIGHT LOOK In order to achieve the classic grid pattern on meat, barbecue it for around a minute, then turn approximately 60 degrees and cook for another minute. NOSEY! It’s easy to tell when a steak is cooked perfectly. Press your forefinger onto your upper lip. Then press the middle of the steak. If both feel just as soft, the steak is not cooked through yet. If the meat feels like the tip of your nose, it is medium. Off the barbecue, quick! INSIDER TIP: Bring extra aroma to the coals by adding herbs like thyme or rosemary to give meat an extra special flavour.

“Just have a barbecue, but make a bit of an effort. You can leave plastic plates and all that stuff out. Forget cling film and millions of sauces. The Cooking Elements range is perfect. Ingredients SEA BREAM

2 tsp fennel seeds 2 garlic cloves 3 tsp organic lemon zest 4 prepared sea bream (350 g each)
600 g waxy potatoes 100 g bacon 4 each of tomatoes and spring onions 1 can white beans (400 g) 50 g rocket, 6 sprigs flat-leaf parsley 5 tbsp. white balsamic vinegar 1 tsp. coarse mustard 8 tbsp. olive oil 1 pinch sugar 12 basil leaves Salt and pepper
4 lemon slices 2 tsp brown sugar
Preparation Wash the SEA BREAM, pat dry and cut two diagonal lines on both sides of the fish. Grind the fennel seeds and chop the garlic, mix with the lemon zest, salt and pepper and rub onto the fish. Place a slice of lemon in the cavity. Barbecue on both sides for five to six minutes. Boil the POTATOES, peel and cut into slices with the spring onion and tomatoes. Dice the bacon and fry until crisp. For the dressing, mix the balsamic vinegar, mustard, olive oil, salt, pepper and sugar. Add to the rinsed beans and leave to stand for 15 minutes. Mix with the rocket, chopped parsley and basil leaves.

usiness is blooming. from the top of a skyscraper in Brooklyn to a plate in one of New York’s hippest restaurants in just a few hours. The distribution channel couldn’t be shorter: harvested in the morning, and sold in the afternoon. Anastasia Cole Plakias, one of the founders of Brooklyn Grange Farm, stands amidst tomato beds and beehives in her wellies, brandishing a garden hose. The food expert, who has her own cooking radio show, wants to help her native city become a greener, more sustainable place. Three years ago, the founders of Brooklyn Grange Farm got together to do something about their dream to unite urban agriculture with good food. The city dwellers’ idea has certainly taken root. Against the breathtaking backdrop of the Manhattan skyline, the team dedicate themselves to growing vegetables and herbs, whilst chickens and beehives add to the atmosphere of this farm in the sky. Some 4,000 square metres of soil is weeded, dug and watered. In the evening, the panoramic views become the backdrop for event dinners and yoga classes. The benefits are obvious: unused roof areas are developed, new jobs and awareness of nutrition and crops are created and tours teach school pupils about the link between the environment and health. In fact urban gardening is a rapidly growing movement. There are already more than 700 city farms. A win-win situation that has the support of the city’s mayor. Nevertheless, the project is funded privately and via Internet charity platforms like Kickstarter. “The biggest challenge”, laughs Anastasia Cole Plakias, “was dragging 54 tonnes of earth up the stairs, since the lift couldn’t cope with the weight. But the best thing is definitely being able to end the day up here with our families, enjoying the sunset and eating delicious, healthy food!”

Talented artists, musicians, inventors – the branches of the Villeroy&Boch family tree are inseparably intertwined with a multifaceted spectrum of creativity. To this day, all of the family members feel a deep sense of belonging to the company, its traditions and tableware. We take a peek behind the scenes and introduce the most creative family members.

tephanie von Fürstenberg greets us amidst a sea of paint splatters in her art studio in Zurich. As the great-niece of Anna Boch, creativity surrounded her from the cradle. The exceptional artist inherited her instinctive flair for art, colour and painting from her mother, Angelica von Fürstenberg, neé Boch. Her father, Benedikt von Fürstenberg, was also extremely creative. Stephanie von Fürstenberg began by training in his textile factory in the German town of Göppingen, where she discovered and embraced her passion for decoration and fashion. She designed fabrics, worked in sales and introduced innovations, such as lightweight jersey.

The creative turning point in her life came with the sudden death of her husband. Aged 58, she dedicated her entire being to her new, great love: painting. “Throughout my childhood, I was surrounded by beautiful things. Wonderfully arranged tables. Pretty decorations – I still decorate everything today. And then our visits to the Villeroy&Boch factory in Mettlach – this was always something extra special for me. It’s only now that I have begun to really embrace and express what has inspired me my whole life long.” And what a life she has! She lives through each and every single one of her paintings. Stephanie von Fürstenberg takes the term handwork literally. Paintbrushes are seldom seen in her grasp – she paints purely with her hands, trusting her touch. She strokes the canvas lovingly. “The paint does what it wants. It guides me. It guides my hands. This is how I feel the colours.” The warmth and soul she dedicates to each of her paintings is immediately clear to see. Her inspiration comes from nature, the sky, stars and flowers on the one hand, and on the other, the decorations and designs of Villeroy&Boch. “Whenever I see a field of flowers in full bloom, my heart bursts with joy.” It’s no wonder, then, that she fell for the Mariefleur ccollection at first sight. “It’s so colourful. It is powerful, delicate, vibrant and has something very endearing, something adorable – this is what happiness is for me. It inspired me to paint my work Cosmea. When the table is set with my pretty tableware, I would also like to see my painting in the background.” Tableware is more than a tradition in the family – it is pure passion – and can’t be anything less. “Receiving and meeting people. This is an inherent part of our family’s tradition.” And creating space for such social activity is a Villeroy&Boch tradition. A summer meadow, in which a table with a crisp, white tablecloth stands. Elegant tableware beckons you to while the day away – a silent hint of Monet floats in the air. Who wouldn’t surrender their heart? Thanks to Anna Boch, one of these artistic encounters played a pivotal role in 1890. She met a friend of her brother Eugène, a rather unsuccessful artist. His name was Vincent van Gogh. Artist and art lover Anna Boch was one of the first to recognise the Dutchman’s talent at an exhibition, and it is said that she bought the only picture that van Gogh ever sold in his lifetime, The Red Vineyard. “What a brave and clever great-aunt I had! I am very proud of her.” Subconsciously, she follows the enthusiasm of her ancestor.

RENÉ VON BOCH As the General Director of Villeroy&Boch from 1878, he led the company to countless international successes. Above all, he is considered as the driving force behind the Mettlach tiles, which adorn many famous buildings, including the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.
In 2009, Stephanie von Fürstenberg met jeweller and jewellery designer Stephan Kaddick. Inspired by his creations, she didn’t hesitate to embark upon a new era in her life: jewellery art. “Jewellery shouldn’t be packed away in a box. It should be hung on the wall like an artwork.” Today, her colourful painting is a stage for traditional goldsmith’s art, antique gemstones, pearls, diamonds and amber. A magnificent symphony that presents new perspectives for all art lovers. Against the backdrop of her successful jewellery collection, art cards and countless exhibitions, the vivacious artist is already planning her next project. She wants to create an automotive artwork for an exhibition at BMW in Munich. One of her paintings matches the colour of a BMW model. The idea, however, is still a vision, and to implement it, Stephanie von Fürstenberg will have to grit her teeth. “At the age of 69, we ladies still have a lot to say.” So what advice does Stephanie von Fürstenberg have for future generations? She takes a sip from her Mariefleur tea cup and smiles, “Listen to your intuition. Don’t run all the time. Stand still and just let things happen. Look. Listen. Feel. Maybe that’s the most important tradition we have. And maybe it’s also part of the secret of our success.”

A merger agreement founds the company Villeroy&Boch. The happy unification is also echoed in the families’ private lives with the marriage of Octavia Villeroy and Eugen von Boch in 1842.

The creative siblings were renowned impressionist painters and owned an impressive collection of art created by their friends Gauguin, Signac, Seurat and van Gogh, all of whom are now considered as some of the most famous and talented artists of all time.

EUGEN VON BOCH His passion for ceramics, coupled with his talent for marketing, resulted in the company’s biggest success. Through a series of brilliant ideas, such as the famous Mettlach tiles, he gave expression to his creativity. He also supported several cultural associations, in addition to establishing a drawing school and the Ceramics Museum in Mettlach.
In 1888, Vincent van Gogh painted a portrait of his friend Eugène Boch entitled ‘The Poet’. Another impressionist portrait of this artistic family is ‘Anna Boch, Woman with a Parasol’, by Isidore Verheyden, ca. 1887.

With the creations made in their small pottery in the French region of Lorraine, it quickly became clear that porcelain pioneer François Boch and his sons had their finger on the pulse of 18th-century society. Within a short space of time, a large factory in Mettlach became the base for their global ceramic triumph.
