RUSSIA

RUSSIA “New Old MTV” Vedomosti 30 May 2013 This is a positive article promoting the change of MTV Russia now being owned and operated by VIMN.

Having existed for 15 years in Russia, MTV will disappear from the air on Saturday. A new Viacom-operated paid MTV will be launched in autumn On Friday night, MTV will be replaced by a new Profmedia channel called Pyatnitsa (Friday). But MTV won’t disappear from Russia; from October 1 a revamped channel will be launched on cable and satellite, according to Elena Balmont, general manager of the Russian division of Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN, manages the MTV brand). MTV went on air in Russia in 1992, with Profmedia operating it under license from VIMN. Terrestrial MTV was one of the top 20 most popular channels in the country, according to TNS figures. Profmedia decided to part ways with MTV last year; over the last few years the market share of MTV, content for which is provided under licensing agreement, has fallen. Viacom vouches that it parted ways with Profmedia “by mutual agreement”. “We enjoyed many years of fruitful cooperation with Profmedia,” said David Lynn, Managing Director and EVP at VIMN UK, “and now we are pleased that from June 1 Russian MTV will be fully owned and operated by our company.” VIMN already manages 10 paid channels in Russia, including Paramount Comedy, Nickelodeon and four MTV-branded music channels (MTV Hits, MTV Rocks, MTV Dance and MTV Live HD). The company doesn’t disclose its financial figures for Russia but Lynn said our country is a priority market for Viacom. The new MTV will be radically different from what Profmedia did, Balmont said: in recent years Viacom’s Russian partner barely used shows from VIMN’s library and Russian viewers didn’t see the most popular shows from global MTV. “Quality Western content virtually disappeared from Russian channels, while our research shows that 90% of our viewers in the 18 – 34 age group like watching American programs and series,” she said. “We will offer them a very good selection.” VIMN strongly disagrees with Profmedia’s position that people have stopped watching music videos on television. MTV with its

music reviews and programs is in greater demand now that it ever has been because it helps young people better navigate the ocean of new songs and albums released everyday, said Kerry Taylor, SVP and Managing Director at MTV UK. Aside from new shows from global MTV and the local versions, the channel will return old hits like Pimp My Ride and Punk’d with Ashton Kutcher that have long been “familiar and loved” by viewers in our country, Balmont said. She said VIMN decided not to launch the flagship MTV channel immediately after it disappears from the air in summer, because the channel’s main audience is young people, who watch less TV in this period. Promotion of the channel will begin in summer with a new MTV site featuring teasers and episodes of shows on the new channel, which will also be shared on social networks. At the same time the channel will also run a search across the country for a new host and face of MTV. “In September we’ll launch a full-scale advertising campaign,” Balmont said. VIMN is now negotiating with major cable, satellite and mobile operators about including MTV in their basic channel packages, she said. In a few years, Balmont expects MTV to be one of the top 20 most popular paid channels in the country. She refused to disclose how much is being spent on the channel re-launch. The operators polled by Vedomosti confirmed they are in talks with MTV and noted no final agreement has yet been reached. Falling market share According to TNS data, the terrestrial MTV channel was one of the top 20 most popular channels in the country. In recent years its share of its target audience (ages 14 – 34) fell slightly, from 1.8% in 2010 to 1.6% this year (figures for January – November in Russia).

RUSSIA “U Makes Friends With MTV: Former Competitors Agree On Partnership” RBC Daily 24 June 2013 This is a positive article about the acquisition of Russia’s U channel used to broadcast MTV under VIMN. U Makes Friends With MTV: Former Competitors Agree On Partnership – RBC http://www.rbcdaily.ru/media/562949987517132 Now the female viewers of the TV channel U (formerly Muz-TV) will be able to watch 100 hours of broadcast content provided by MTV (owned by Viacom). The 2-year partnership deal was struck by Elena Balmont, head of Viacom’s Russian office, and Ruben Oganesyan, general director of U. The projects acquired include documentaries and series not previously shown on Russian MTV. MTV went off the air on June 1 and was replaced on the frequency by Pyatnitsa. The brand owner Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) received a number of proposals from terrestrial TV channels about partnership and the provision of MTV-produced content and programs. According to Elena Balmont, general director of the Russian office of VIMN, the TV channel’s content was licenses by Profmedia and not available for other channels. “We simply didn’t have the right to sell MTV programs and shows,” she said. The role of partner was bestowed on an old Russian MTV competitor, the former Muz-TV, which now broadcasts as U, an entertainment channel for young women. “We chose this channel because our audiences overlap well. The young girls that watch U are undoubtedly part of MTV’s audience,” Balmont explained. The new MTV will take to the airwaves in October this year. Ruben Oganesyan, general director of U, thinks MTV programs will be interesting for the channel’s target audience of females aged 11 – 34. “MTV makes a quality product that’s interesting for girls and is attractive in terms of the concept behind our channel,” Oganesyan said. A branded MTV block will air on U this week. The first program viewers will see is True Life, a social project that used to go out on the old MTV. “On U, you’ll see new reality documentary premieres. The project will start on June 25,” Oganesyan said.

Elena Balmont said U acquired a number of entertainment shows, series and documentaries produced by global MTV. These include the dram-com Underemployed about the lives of American graduates and the reality series 16 & Pregnant about the problems and frustrations of pregnant teenagers. The programs acquired also include the documentary series I Used to Be Fat about how overweight people overcome emotional and physical challenges to lose weight. “I think our audience will appreciate this content,” said Oganesyan. Both parties refused to discuss the value of the partnership. But Elena Balmont added that Viacom invests $3 billion in content production each year. “This is certainly an indication of the quality of programs our partners pay for,” she added. Anastasia Nikiforova, general director of the agency PHD (part of the BBDO Group) thinks U’s partnership with the MTV brand and content could attract advertisers and make the channel more valuable because part of the MTV brand’s loyal audience will watch it. “It could be assumed that more people will watch the channel because of this partnership and that [advertising] blocks will be more full. MTV content had its loyal audience, which means there is potential to attract sponsor money and the advertising budgets of youth brands,” Nikiforova said. She noted that since U’s launch, in April – May 2013 advertising on the channel was primarily dominated by FMCG goods: foodstuffs, beauty and health products and perfumery products. “The biggest players on the channel are Mars Russia, Unilever and Mondelez International. They account for 19% of advertising spend on the channel,” she said. Video International (which sells advertising airtime on U) predicts positive results from the partnership. “As far as we know, U has a good package of content not only from MTV but also Nickelodeon and Viacom. It completely fits in with the concept of a channel for girls,” according to Corporate Communications Director Anton Charkin. He said it’s still too soon to talk about numbers, but if audience increases, additional advertising budgets will come with it. U’s broadcast concept was defined in April this year with the arrival of the new general director Ruben Oganesyan. Now the channel operates exclusively for girls, with the core of its 11 – 34 target audience being girls aged 16 – 25. Video International (sells advertising airtime on First Channel, REN TV, Fifth Channel, ProfMedia TV channels and U) estimates that 35% of TV advertising budgets is spent on females aged 11 – 34.
