The sun shone through the windows of the classroom while Cynthia, Marge andAnita played on the rug. They were building a big tower withwooden blocks. Their moms were meeting with their teacher, Ms. Betty, in a corner ofthe room.
The sun shined bright through the windows of the CCDay Care Center while Dumaka, Tirza and Nanise played together on the rug. They were busily building a large structure with the wooden blocks while their mothers and their teacher Ms. Kathy huddled in the far corner ofthe room.
The grown ups were speaking very softly. However, the children could just hear what theywere saying. They were talking about the idea of Ms. Betty giving a special award to one student at the end of each day.
Marge’s mother had an idea. “Since everychild is truly special, each of the children should have a turn to receive theaward,” she said.
Cynthia’s mother thought it was a better idea for the award to be given to a child who was the best at doing something during the day.
Anita’s mother suggested it was more important to give the award to a child who followed all the class rules during the day.
“Let’s take some time to think about it,” Ms. Betty said. She invited the moms to come back again in two weeks to decide how the award should be given.
Ms. Betty watched the children for the next two weeks. She paid attention to how they played together in theclassroom. She noticed when they were kind to each other.
Ms. Betty watched the children as they ran and played outside. She noticed how wellthey played together.
Ms. Betty paid attention to the children as they went on class walking trips, too. Shesaw them helping each other and being kind to everyone.
As Ms. Betty watched the childreneach day, she saw many wonderful things happening. Leo’s friend, Alexander, lost a toy that he brought for show-and-tell. It was his favorite toy and he was sad. Leo kept looking and looking for it until he found it.

One day Sarah fell on the playground and skinned her knee. Marge ran and gotMs. Betty to wash the scrape and bandage her friend’s knee. Then Marge stayed with Sarah until she felt okay to go play again.

On another day the children were told to bring their lunches for a picnic in the park. When Leo found out that Miles had forgotten his lunch, Leo shared his lunch with his friend.

It had been two weeks since the three mothers and Ms. Betty had met to talk about the special award program. Now they were back together to discuss it again.

Ms. Betty spoke first, “I have been watching the children for two weeks. They have been like bright shining stars each time they do kind things fortheir friends. Ms. Betty told the moms about some of the special acts of kindness she had seen from their children. Then she said, “What if the daily award is given to the child who does the kindest thing for someone else during the day?” David’s mother spoke up enthusiastically, “The award could be called the Brite Star Award. Oh, and we could call the children the Brite Star Kids!” “That’s a wonderful idea!” Ms. Betty andthe other mothers said.

So, from that day on, Ms. Bettygave an award to a child at the end of each day. The award was not given because the childwas special. It was not given because the child was the best at something. The award wasn’t given because the child followed the rules. The child was given the award because he or she had been a Brite Star Kid who showed special kindness and care to others. That’s how the kids came to be known as the Brite Star Kids. And that’s how the daycare center became the Brite Star Kids After School Club!

Think About It
1. What were the children doing whileMs. Betty talked withtheir mothers? 2. How did Leo help when Alexander lost his toy? 3. How did Marge help when her friend skinned her knee? 4. What did Leo do when his friend forgot his lunch? 5. How does Ms. Betty decide whichchild will receive the award?
Let’s Work Together!
Anybody canbe kind. All you need to do is pay attention to what’s happening around you.
I Will . . .
• Notice when someone has a problem. • Taketime to help others. • Do whatever Icanto show others that Icare about them.
Helping others whenever you canshows them that they matter to you. It showsyou care about what’s happening to them.
Kindness and Caring
How does it make you feel when someone is kind or helpful to you? Does it make you feel that the person cares about you? Does it make you feel special? How do you feel when you are able to help someone? Does it make you feel good to be kind and caring? Do you want to help only your friends? Would you help someone whohas been unkind to you? Would you help someone you don’t knowvery well? Will helping others turn a person into a friend?
