Marge’s mother dropped her off at the Brite Star Kids’ After School Club. She said, “I am going to work for my charity today. I’ll be back to pick you up when I am done.” Karen was standing nearby and heard what Marge’s mother said.

The sun shined bright through the windows of the CCDay Care Center while Dumaka, Tirza and Nanise played together on the rug. They were busily building a large structure with the wooden blocks while their mothers and their teacher Ms. Kathy huddled in the far corner ofthe room.

Marge and Karen joined the rest of the Brite Star Kids sitting on the rug as they waited for the day to begin. When Ms. Betty sat down Karenasked, “What is acharity?”

“Well,” said Ms. Betty, “a charity is a group of people who help other people or animals that have needs.” She pointed to some pictures hanging on the wall. “Don’t you remember?” she continued, “all of you have been collecting money for three charities this year.”

Ms. Betty pointed to the Brite Star Make a Wish poster. “I’m sure you remember that Brite Star Make a Wish is a charity that helps kids who are sick. It grants a wish that they have.”

Next, Ms. Betty pointed to the Brite Star Ranch poster. “I know you remember the Brite Star Ranch. It’s the place where older animals and animals with no homes live peaceful, happy lives.”

Then, Ms. Betty pointed to the Boys and Girls Club poster. “Of course, we can’t forget the Boys and Girls Club, the special place where children from struggling families or children who are often home alone can make friends, learn and have fun.”

“Karen,” Ms. Betty continued, “I’m glad that you brought up the subject of charities because the holidays are coming and I thinkit would be nice if we could collect money again for our threecharities.” “But I’d rather collect money for a party!” Karen said. All the Brite Star Kids cheered in agreement.

Ms. Betty was surprised by the Brite Star Kids’ response. “Are you sure you want to collect money for yourselves instead of to help other people or animals who might need it more?” “Yes!” the Brite Star Kidsshouted.

Ms. Betty was disappointed in the kids’ decision. But she didn’t want to force them to do something they didn’t want to do. So the Brite Star Kids began collectingmoney for their holidayparty.

When they had enough money for their party the kids made a list of everything they wanted to buy for it. Then Ms. Betty led them on a walking trip to the grocery store down the street. They bought the treats they wanted for their party with the money they had collected.

After lunch the next day the Brite Star kids had their party. The games were funand the treats were really yummy. But, all too soon, the party was over.

When the party was over, it was time to clean up. “Before we clean up,” Ms.Betty announced, “I would like all of you to come sit on the rug so we can talk.” The kids went to the rug and quietlysat down.

“Well, you all had a lot of fun today, didn’t you?” Ms. Betty asked. “Do youremember having fun when we gave money to our charities?” All the children agreed that it was fun to give the money. “The difference between today’s fun and when you gave money to the charities is that today’s fun is over. But the fun you had when you gave to others still makes you feel good each time you see the photos I’ve put on the wall.”

Ms. Betty kept talking while the children cleaned up their room. “Just remember that doing something nice for yourself is fun for a while. But doing something nice for others is also fun and will make you feel good for a long time.”

From that day on, the Brite Star kids collected money for the charities instead of themselves. They had learned that the greatest joy comes from doing things for others rather than just for yourself. They also learned that helpingmake others happy makes you happy aswell!

Think About It 1. How did Ms. Betty describe what a charity is? 2. Why did Ms. Betty wantthe children to collect money for the charities? 3. How did Ms. Betty feel about the children’s decision to have a party? 4. How did the children feel when they remembered helping the charities? 5. What did the children learn about what brings happiness?

Let’s work together! There are many charities that help people or animals in different ways. Think about one you would like tohelp.

I will . .. • Choose a charity whose work I want tohelp. • Give some of my own money to help the charity. • Tell others about the charity and the work it does. Doing what Icanto help people, animals and our planet is part of being human. Sharing my own money or time to help showsthat I care.

How do you feel about giving to others? How do you feel about giving to others? Have you ever given money or timeto an organization that helps others? How did it make you feel to be a part of it? What kind of charities are you interested in? Those that help children? Helping those wholost homes in disasters? Helping animals? Could you save some of your own money from birthday gifts or allowancesto give to charities?
