Hooray! Summer is finally here and so is our colourful June edition of Vine. With a new issue comes change here at Vine HQ in Kemsing. We all wish Charlotte Luxford the very best of luck in her new career at Grand Designs magazine... she has left some large shoes to fill but I shall do my best! As the new editor of Sevenoaks’ premier magazine I feel a great responsibility to continue to produce the same high quality publication that will be enjoyed by local families and businesses. I would like to thank the many people I have so far met in and around Sevenoaks for their kind welcomes and warm wishes. I look forward to meeting many more of you in future! I love the arts and summer is the perfect excuse to experiment with vivid colours...so this season Vine brings you an exclusive interview with Folkestone-based retro graphic designer Andy Tuohy (see page 18), as well as a comprehensive look at the latest local summer arts festivals and days out for the whole family. There really is something for everyone – whether your thing is devouring seasonal produce (page 22) or Shakespearean sonnets (page 61). Our Down To a Tee golf feature also gives you the low-down on the best courses to visit during these (hopefully) long balmy days (page 54). Finally, with summer holidays just around the corner, we bring you the ultimate guide to toning up for that bikini body in our summer shape up special (page 30). I hope you have a great start to your summer!

TEDx SEVENOAKS comes to Wally Hall TEDxSevenoaks, an independently organised event where people share global ideas is coming to town on June 14. Licensed by TED, the event will be held between 7-10pm at the Ship Theatre, Walthamstow Hall, Sevenoaks, mixing live local and recorded international speakers in support of the inspiring theme ‘The Possibility of People’, promoting the power of ideas that can change the world. “It’s a real coup to be given a licence to stage a TEDx event in Kent,” says event organiser Mark Hodgson of Thought Leaders Global. “People like Richard Branson and Al Gore have given their time to the movement because its role in sharing ideas for the benefit of the global community is so powerful. Speakers have just 18 minutes to present their ideas which are then added to the TEDx video library, which is freely accessible to anyone, anywhere on the planet. This summer, world class speakers, including a ‘mystery’ Sunday Times number 1 best-selling author whose first book sold over 400,000 copies and Vine’s very own founder and director, 25-year-old entrepreneur Owen Hunnam, will also be speaking at the event.

Over 80 business owners arrived in droves for Vine’s increasingly popular networking event last month, taking in the atmosphere of a beautiful sunny evening at Sevenoaks Preparatory school, enjoying fine wines and canapés courtesy of Thomas Franks

Thanks @VineMagazine for a great #grapevine networking tonight. Great to meet everyone and lovely nibbles! Blackwatch@blackwatchents

Speaking of Grapevine’s success, Mr Luke Harrison, Head of Sevenoaks Prep, said: “We were delighted to host May’s Grapevine Event and it was a pleasure to meet those in attendance. The diversity of professions present highlighted the number of talented and driven people we have in the local area, which is particularly pertinent to us at the moment as we are running the Social Entrepreneurs Project with our Year 8 pupils. This project, aimed at supporting AIDS orphans in sub-Saharan Africa, encourages our budding Year 8 entrepreneurs to set up their own businesses and turn a £10 seed capital into £100 or more. Perhaps we can convince the organisers of the Grapevine event to put on a junior version!”

This month’s Grapevine will be held at: Coolings Nurseries on Wednesday June 27 at 6pm. Visit vinedigital.co.uk/grapevine to register for your free invite

Readers’ Pets Pet name: Persephone

with Michael Fallon MP

Q. How is the health of the Coalition Government two years after its birth?

A. The Coalition Government is in great health. Relations between Cabinet Ministers are convivial, with Lib Dem and Tory MPs working well together. Some constituents find this goodnatured relationship surprising. They tell me that coalitions are “un-British. This is a view shared by a few political commentators, many of whom invoke the spirit of Benjamin Disraeli. In 1852, Disraeli said in a Commons debate that “England does not love coalitions. The quotation, though accurate, is in fact misleading as a general precept. Disraeli’s remark was meant as a retort to an attempt by his parliamentary adversaries to thwart him when he was Chancellor of the Exchequer. “Coalition therefore referred to opposition to a particular measure, not a form of government.

Over the past two centuries Britain has actually had a number of coalitions. The so-called “golden-age of the British parliamentary system – the era from Gladstone to Lloyd George – was characterised by coalition government. It has only been since the Second World War that single-party government has become the norm. The successful coalitions of the pre-war period shared a number of characteristics, the most important of which was a commitment to a common cause. Today’s coalition is robust because it too has a shared cause: both Lib Dem and Tory alike accept the need to eliminate our record debts and restore economic growth. n Have a question for the MP? COMMUNITY STAR of the Future Ben Du Preez – Photographer Ben Du Preez is a 20-year-old talented young photographer originally from Sevenoaks, now based in Tunbridge Wells. In his work he exquisitely captures a wide range of subjects, but is most passionate about landscape photography. One of his favourite places to take photographs is the Pembrokeshire coast. He has also travelled to Australia’s Byron Bay and Sydney to take photos of its breathtaking scenery and wildlife. n For prints and more information visit www.dupreezphotography.com

second interview

A fantastic storyline about the harsh reality of class divisions, amazingly written script packed with laughs, hauntingly powerful moments and a very strong cast. What most excited you about playing Mrs Johnstone?

Every month we interview a notable member of your

Maureen Nolan The star of our monthly must see musical Blood Brothers spills the beans on her latest role What can we expect from Blood Brothers?

What makes you happy? Being at home with my family. What annoys you the most? Really snobby people.

It is my favourite musical so it was a real privilege to play her. She’s such a strong and funny character but shows a vulnerable side too so it’s good to play a character with a variety of personality traits.

Where is your favourite place in Kent?

Did you feel any pressure knowing that three of your sisters had previously played the part?

Where’s the best place you’ve ever visited?

Of course! I just keep thinking of all the great actresses who have played her in the past: Carole King, Barbara Dixon, Kiki Dee...

Venice is like walking into a picture book.

I love Canterbury – I did panto there which was fun. I love the history of the place too.

Would you ever consider a Nolan Sisters’ reunion or going to into the studio to make a new record? Coleen, Bernie, Linda and I reformed briefly for a one-off concert tour of the UK and Ireland in 2009 which was fantastic. We are considering out options for the future. Do you prefer making records in the studio or musical theatre? Making records can actually be rather boring as it’s so repetitive. Musical theatre is live and more exciting – you just go out there and do it. I would enjoy making a solo album though.

n Blood Brothers will be showing at The Assembly Hall Theatre, Tunbridge Wells from 12-16 June. Tickets cost from £15. To book, visit www.assemblyhalltheatre.co.uk

With prints, cards and posters to create, exhibitions to feature in and a forthcoming project with First Great Western Trains to complete, Andy Tuohy is a busy man. Vine finds out more about the fast-paced lifestyle of the Folkestone-based artist 18 vine June 2012 vinedigital.co.uk

WORDS: EMILY LOUISE OVERY

You trained as a graphic designer at Liverpool Polytechnic and worked in publishing and advertising before going it alone as an artist. What made you decide to take the leap and go freelance? I moved from London to Folkestone eight years ago, so in a sense that forced the issue! I really wanted to strike out on my own. Be my own boss. I had worked in many design studios in London freelancing for companies like Loewy and Wolff Olins, but I wanted the freedom of being self-employed, making my own decisions. Good or bad, at least they’d be my own. A downside to being my own boss is that it is incredibly hard to switch off ! Making time for holidays is nigh on impossible. You cover a diverse range of subjects in your art – what most inspires you? Architecture has always been something that I am drawn towards. I tend to make an iconic building the focus of my art and from there everything else often falls into place. The buildings I am most attracted to are 20th century modern; a good example is the De La Warr Pavilion in East Sussex. I’ve created a series of limited edition prints of Bexhill that also sell as cards in the De La Warr. Your website features an entire section of Kent-related artwork. What do your love most about the county?

©Andy Tuohy 2007. Deal Shelter. 40x50cm. Edition

I’ve always loved the landscape here in Kent – it’s called The Garden of England for a reason! The Kent coast is really interesting and varied and I find it really inspiring. There’s something about the space, the good air and the faded grandeur of many of our seaside towns that I love. It’s no secret that many towns, including my own, have been hit really hard since the 70s and do have their problems, but there’s often a great spirit of community, which is certainly true of Folkestone where I live and work and Margate where I’ve exhibited. What projects are you focusing on at the moment? I was contacted by First Great Western to work on a series of images of destinations for their first class passenger lounge in Paddington. They requested images that are related to stops on their lines, and so far I’ve produced prints of Paddington Station, Didcot Railway Centre, Great Malvern and Porthmeor Beach, St. Ives and Bristol. They wanted the heritage approach. Advertising on trains nowadays is often photographic, so I’m hopefully part of a movement to draw on the milieu of classic illustrative designs of the pre-war period. Initially the project will involve twelve images and after two months' solid work I’m halfway there! As an artist, is it easier working to a deadline? You certainly can’t afford to dither when you have deadlines, so in that sense it’s a good thing because you get on with the task in hand and it focuses the mind. Quite often if there is no deadline it can be very difficult to know when is an appropriate time to stop. How does it feel to produce work for large institutions such as the Tate? It’s a great honour and an affirmation of my work. The Tate is such a respected British institution and I am delighted to be associated with it. It’s often difficult to maintain momentum when you work creatively for yourself, so any boost in terms of clients or profile makes a huge difference when looking at developing future projects.

FEATURE You always have such a vibrant use of colour in your posters – why do that when the scene you are presenting isn’t always the same? You’ll find that the vintage posters from which I draw inspiration often make bold use of colour to attract the viewer and draw them in. They were designed for quick visual impact. But I don’t use bright colours for colours’ sake if the subject doesn’t demand it – it’s all about context. A good example is the softer palette used for the souvenir poster I produced for Turner Contemporary in Margate. What other things do you enjoy, besides art? I love cycling and walking, especially along the coast from Folkestone to Hythe. It can give me time to think away from the studio and clear the head. I enjoy travelling to find new subject matter. My recent trip to Great Malvern to produce one of the First Great Western prints was a joy as it enabled me to work and walk in one of the most beautiful settings imaginable. What advice would you give to an aspiring artist? My advice would be to ask what are you hoping to achieve? If you want to

20 vine June 2012 vinedigital.co.uk

do it because you really just want to satisfy your creative urges and it gives you pleasure then just do it and enjoy it for what pleasure it gives you. However, if you want to make a career out if it, just be mindful that people won’t come knocking at your door just because you have talent and create beautiful images. It takes a great deal of behind-the-scenes hard work in marketing, networking and exhibiting, and that’s after you’ve finished the day job of creating the work itself. n Visit www.andytuohy.co.uk for more information about Andy and his work. n For more information on exhibitions contact Andy Tuohy on andy@andytuohy. co.uk or ring 07921 919 735 n Andy is exhibiting at the Margate Gallery June 15th-July 22nd and his series of images for First Great Western can viewed from June onwards in their First Class Passenger Lounge in Paddington Station. 100% PASS All 18 pupils at Russell House in Otford who sat the 11-plus exam in September 2011 passed with an average mark of 411, and:

Summer is on its way and this year, with retailers slashing their prices, there are plenty of bargains up for grabs. For most, shopping is an enjoyable experience, although sometimes choosing what to buy goes wrong, or a product fails to live up to your expectations. What then? If this does happen you do have certain rights under legislation. So, before hitting the shops, arm yourself with more than just the plastic…know your legal rights. The Sale of Goods Act 1979 automatically gives basic rights to anyone who enters into a contract for the sale of goods. Goods must be ‘as described’ on any labels, signs or in any advert. If a pashmina is described as ‘100% cashmere’, it should not be made of polyester. They must be of ‘satisfactory quality’, taking into account any description, price or other relevant circumstances. A kettle should not leak after only one week’s use. Goods must also be ‘fit for normal purpose’. Where the retailer does not abide by these obligations, you

can return the goods and obtain a full refund. Some, though not all, retailers can be canny in the way in which they deal with a request for a refund. • “I am entitled to a refund”. If an item is perfect, a retailer is under no obligation to exchange it or provide a refund – although they often do so as a goodwill gesture. • “You need a receipt”. A receipt is not a legal necessity. You just need to show proof of purchase. This can be done by way of a bank statement or credit card bill. • “You’ll have to complain to the manufacturer.” A retailer cannot avoid giving a refund by blaming the manufacturer – your contract is with him. Use the plastic if you’re spending over £100. Under the Consumer Credit Act 1974 the card provider is liable as well as the retailer. If the item is faulty, broken or doesn’t arrive and the item costs over £100, you can seek reimbursement from the card provider. This is invaluable if the retailer goes bust!

food for thought with Benjamin James

Our resident foodie Benjamin James of the George & Dragon in Chipstead reveals what’s been keeping the pub busy this month and shares his favourite recipes

For the latest news, visit our new website at www.georgeanddragonchipstead.com and follow us @GeorgeChipstead on Twitter

Cocktail of the month: Strawberry Daiquiri Supposedly conceived in Cuban historic fish restaurant and cocktail bar El Floridita around the time of the Spanish- American war, the Daiquiri is now synonymous with martini-style drinks containing rum, lime and sugar. With so many versions of the classic it’s a drink well worth personalising with your favourite flavour. Summers at the George & Dragon Chipstead always involve a few of our strawberry Daiquiris and this is how we make them: 4/6 of a lime 15ml of sugar syrup (gomme) 37.5ml of gold rum (Havana club ideally) 12.5 ml of strawberry liqueur 3 x medium sized strawberries 1 dash vanilla essence Crush the lime, sugar syrup and strawberries in the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Add the rum, liqueur and vanilla and top with ice cubes and shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled martini glass using a cocktail strainer and a T-strainer to stop any broken ice and fruit. Garnish with a curl of lime zest.

n Visit the pub at 39 High Street, Chipstead, TN13 2RW and for more information or to book, call 01732 779019 or visit www.georgeanddragonchipstead.com

Traditional bunting adorning houses and lampposts, strawberries and cream, sunshine, street parties and true community spirit abound... what a wonderfully British month June is turning out to be! With the Queen’s Jubilee celebrating her 60 years on the throne, I thought it a perfect opportunity to embrace history and focus on the “heirloom or heritage” fruit and vegetable at Chipstead’s George & Dragon. I am always quick to promote the provenance of the staple ingredients used on our menus, whether it is venison from Chart Farm, pork from Bridge Farm, apples from Castle Farm, cheese from Winterdale Shaw, or ice cream from Taywell Farm. Among our favourite dishes lie ingredients that are a little more obscure and interesting. Often termed “heritage”, these fruits and vegetables were typically cultivated more than 50 years ago. Many have escaped mass market commercial farming because they either produce low yields or require excessive defence against pests, while others have simply fallen out of favour with consumers. Take the Salad Blue potato for example, which dates back to 1800 and, along with wild garlic and asparagus, featured heavily on the George and Dragon’s menu during May. The Salad Blue potato is a deep, purple blue colour with a beautifully nutty texture to the skin, much like a Jersey royal. It works very well in salads and is a great alternative to the everyday New Potato. Admittedly for most readers, picking up heritage vegetables in the big supermarkets is not easy. However, farm shops and farmers’ markets are a great source of heritage produce. Stonepitts Farm just outside Seal for example is a great place to go and pick your own fruit with many heritage varieties available. Another great way to explore heritage produce is to grow it yourself. Here at the George & Dragon, customers enjoy wandering around our herb and vegetable garden whilst enjoying a thirst- quenching drink or meal in the sun-drenched garden. We also enjoy cultivating our own heritage varieties of peas, tomatoes and yellow tornado courgettes, and are particularly excited this year because the spring rain has well-prepared the ground for our little seedlings to flourish just in time for alfresco dining on Father’s day later this month! Sunday June 17 is set to be a great day!

Kids limber up for “Create A Fruit & Veg Masterpiece” Competition

Primary school children at Loose Infan t School, Maidstone are preparing for entr y into the “Create A Fruit & Veg Masterpiece” competition organised by Produced in Kent. The county-wide art competition is open to all primary school children, who can enter before the dead line on Monday June 11. Produced in Kent is inviting all primary school children between year s R to six to join the race and crea te a picture depicting London 2012 using real fruit and vege tables. Children taking part in the novel and educational art competit ion are challenged to only use seasonal fruit and vegetables grow n in the ‘Garden of England’. RJ Kingsland & Son, one of three local sponsors behind the competition, delivered a van-load of locally-grown fruit and vegetables to the children of Loose Infan t School on May 18. The delivery saw groups of young children from the first and second year groups creating some imaginative spor ts scenes with the produce, as this year’s competition take s on an Olympic theme. The three best entries in both the individual and group categories will be fast-tracked to a live final at Broadview Gardens on June 29 where children will have the chance to recreate their masterpieces. Summer Shape Up

ways to burn calories without exercising

Spending hours at the gym isn’t the only way to tone and slim down this summer. Little movement choices we make every day are also important. Read on to find out how you can burn extra calories every day without even trying!

1

Stand – don’t sit!

We’re all guilty of it – SITTING for longer than we should. Try standing more often and you’ll increase the activity of your fat-burning enzymes and metabolism, meaning you’ll burn up to a few hundred extra calories per day by avoiding the sitting position. Isn’t that far easier than sweating it out on the treadmill?

Fidget as much as possible

2

Although it’s considered an annoying habit, fidgeting definitely has its positive side! Studies have shown that people who constantly move throughout the day tend to be slimmer through burning more calories than people who don’t. So next time you tap your feet, drum your fingers or shrug your shoulders just think of all those extra calories you’re blasting!

3

Park further away

Another bad habit is cruising around the car park trying to find that one free space in the crowded area that is closest to the supermarket entrance. Why not park further away? It will mean less petrol consumption as you avoid driving around in circles AND you’ll burn more calories without exercising!

Stretch away!

4

Doing some simple stretching exercises every day can be a great way to enhance blood flow and raise your heart rate, leading to you burning more calories than you would doing aerobic or resistance training.

5

Breathe

Did you know that rhythmic contractions of the abdominal blood vessels during inhaling and exhaling help to circulate blood through the body, increasing oxygen uptake and metabolic rate? With that in mind, focus on deep breathing from the stomach at frequent times throughout the day.

WATCH THE INCHES DISAPPEAR Vine takes a look at how laser inch-loss LaserLipo treatment can help you to achieve that perfect bikini body this summer

D

id you know that LaserLipo technology was originally designed to speed up healing? Another (more common) use of such cold laser technology is to painlessly liquefy fat cells, meaning you can lose inches in just four 20-minute treatments! In contrast to Liposuction, LaserLipo drains fat cells rather than removing them completely. The fat is then drained by a healthy person’s lymphatic system, reducing a few inches each week. The LaserLipo treatment works by using a cold red laser to permeate and break fat cells, causing them to release their fat stores. It is painless, safe and completely non-invasive, meaning minimum impact on your everyday life as you can get back to your daily business when treatment is finished! LaserLipo can be used to treat all of those problem areas we worry about before going to the beach... including tummy bulge, love handles and saddlebags. It can even be used to even out skin tone and tackle stretch marks and scarring, or help you to lose post-baby weight. The number of treatments you receive will depend on your body type and the results desired, but the standard treatment routine is two weekly 20-minute treatments for 4-6 weeks. Following this,

maintenance treatments can be undertaken as suggested by your experienced clinical technician. Combined with a healthy diet and cardio-vascular activity to speed things along, you can certainly achieve your perfect beach body look in just a couple of weeks (if having a minimum of two treatments per week)! The Strawberry Inch Loss Clinic’s helpful team of experts can help you to achieve the healthy body you want in the quick time that you want it. You can even pay in monthly instalments! Book 8 treatments for £399 now and get another treatment completely free! n Call 01622 685554 or visit www.strawberryinchlossclinic. co.uk n Strawberry Inch Loss Clinic 1 St Peters Mews, Somerfield Road, Maidstone, Kent, ME16 8JJ

The Bowen Technique – a history

T

he Bowen Technique is a therapeutic system developed over 50 years ago by Australian Tom Bowen (1916-1982). Used in over 40 countries, the technique uses moves that challenge soft tissue, release congestion and stimulate energy flow, relieving pain and inflammation. It helps the body’s innate ability to heal itself and its positive effects on nerve, muscle and connective tissue provide lasting relief from pain and misalignment in a simple, effective manner. For more than 50 years it has been used successfully to treat thousands of people suffering from a huge variety of ailments, and has even been used to treat horses. While he was alive, Bowen taught his techniques to only six assistants working directly under his instruction: Keith Davis, Nigel Love, Kevin Neave, Oswald Rentsch, Kevin Ryan and Romney Smeeton. After his death, these assistants adopted their own

Bowen technique which is used right up to the present day. You can experience Bowen at the Riverhead clinic. Their professional staff Barbara and Emma Francis have over 12 years of experience – also offering Reiki Healing, massage and ear candling.

Bootcamp-Friendly Curries Arrive At Spice Club Local fitness expert Sam Winkworth teams up with Spice Club owner Gulham Choudhry to launch brand new Bootcamp-friendly curry menu

A

s from July 1, Spice Club in Sevenoaks will be serving up Evolution Bootcampfriendly curries on their menu for diners who want to eat out and still stick to their diet plan. Speaking of the collaboration, Sam Winkworth said: “I’ve decided to team up with the best curry house in town and put this menu together to destroy the myth that you have to eat REALLY boring foods to see fat-loss results. Everyone loves food and most people fall off the diet wagon because while slimming their food is

really bland and tasteless!” Having previously worked as a personal trainer in seven different health clubs for over 10 years, Mr Winkworth launched his own fitness company Evolution Bootcamp back in 2009. “I’ve realised from my own personal

34 vine June 2012 vinedigital.co.uk

experiences and other members’ feedback that it is sometimes very hard to follow a healthy eating plan while dining out. A lot of restaurants aren’t very co-operative and don’t seem to have many dishes on the menu that are completely clean from chemicals, sugar and preservatives,” he said. “Eating foods that are processed will massively impact on how you lose fat, so after a lot of thought I’ve decided to team up with Spice Club and put this menu together for diners who enjoy a good curry but still want to stick to their

diet plan. All the curries on this menu are free from wheat, dairy, sugar and preservatives so now the residents of Sevenoaks can eat out and still lose body fat without worrying about eating food that isn’t healthy. And let’s be honest, the tastier the food the longer you are likely to stick to your diet,” he added. Residents wishing to eat these amazing diet-friendly curries should ask for the Bootcamp-Friendly Curry menu when they go to the Spice Club.

Q: I’ve just started lifting weights to help me tone up but I’m concerned about putting on muscle. Should women really be lifting weights? Jane C, Sevenoaks A: When it comes to exercise most women spend their time jogging in the park or wasting hours on a treadmill or crosstrainer believing that it’s the quickest and easiest way to get fit and lose weight. This is simply not the case! Here are four reasons why you should add strength training to your sessions ASAP! 1. You will lose more body fat and keep it off Those taking part in regular strength training sessions will increase lean muscle mass and as a result will ramp up their resting metabolic rate (and therefore burn more fat) for up to 48 hours after every session. 2. You will gain strength without bulk Women typically don’t gain size from strength training because compared to men, women have at least15-20 times less testosterone (the hormone responsible for developing muscle mass). You will, however, develop muscle tone and definition. This ‘toned’ appearance comes from removing the layer of fat that covers a well-developed muscle.

Strength training not only builds stronger muscles, but also builds stronger connective tissues and increases joint stability. This acts as reinforcement for the joints and helps prevent injury. A recent 12-year study showed that strengthening the low-back muscles had an 80 per cent success rate in eliminating or alleviating low-back pain. 4. You will decrease your risk of osteoporosis, heart disease, depression and diabetes Also, at least a third of all cancers are known to be preventable through a properly tailored exercise and nutrition plan. A word of warning – strength training requires correct technique, exercise selection and guidance to be safe and worthwhile. n For more information or a free 30-minute consultation to get you started, call 01732 451 979. Visit www.betterbodyshop.co.uk

3. You will reduce your risk of injury, back pain and arthritis

OUR COMMUNITY In this column I discuss topical issues around social care. Whether you are wrestling with a family dilemma, looking for support for a loved one, or just interested in the debate, I hope you will find something of interest Richard Gould is managing director at TerraBlu Homecare Q: My relative is not managing well at home, refuses any help and I am at my wits’ end. What should I do? A: People can refuse help for a variety of reasons, and the first thing that we would advise is to take a step back and try and put yourself in your relative’s shoes. What may be behind the situation? Unresolved family issues can often get in the way of communication at this difficult time. Finding a way to resolve them (if possible) will pay dividends. People are often worried about accepting help, as they feel they will lose control of their lives, or that help will turn into unwelcome interference. Take time to understand your own motives in seeking help for someone. Often we get worried about things that are of no consequence to our relatives. Whether it is because we see a relative not keeping the house as tidy as they used to, or weeds growing in what used to be immaculate flowerbeds. Growing old will naturally lead to many adjustments – some big, some small. We need to make sure we focus on things that matter to the person we are trying to support. Define the need for any help. Once we have navigated through the emotional issues, we can focus on what support your relative really needs either to maintain their quality of life or to stay safe. This may involve help with doing things they enjoy, adjustments to the house, or

visits by professionals to ensure medication is taken, washing gets done and meals prepared and cooked. Once you have identified the help you need and can discuss it in positive terms, it is important to make sure that you have addressed any residual anxieties. These are often around money and independence. Money worries are different for each family, and often support can be paid for by Social Services or the NHS. Independence is a trickier issue around your relative still feeling in control. Tempting though it may be to organise everything yourself, if your relative doesn’t really approve, the support may break down after a few weeks. Reach a consensus on what your plan is and what specific benefits your relative is going to get out of any arrangements you have agreed. Lastly, be gentle on yourself. Sometimes we can try all we might, but we can’t lead people’s lives for them, no matter how dear they are to us. If you have agreed little changes, that is the start of a dialogue that will bring you closer together for the journey ahead.

AS SIMPLE AS ABCD

Do you want to visit a high quality, state of the art private dental practice in central Sevenoaks offering a wide range of family and preventive dentistry? Vine checks out Atkinson Brignall Caring Dentistry to explore the range of treatments they have to offer, from a specialist paediatric service, to aesthetics, dental implants and aligner orthodontics Before:

WHITE FILLINGS

After:

Whether it's for front or back teeth, there is no doubt that white fillings can improve the appearance of the mouth. But sometimes they just don’t look right. This is because teeth have a variety of shades, with colour showing through from deeper layers, and dentists often use just a single shade for the filling. With modern materials we can imperceptibly blend fillings into your tooth using multiple shades and “anatomical layering” to replicate the structure of your natural tooth. Before:

CROWNS After:

Crowns are not so frequently carried out these days, having been superseded by more conservative modern adhesive options such as onlays or veneers which can build up or reinforce the tooth in a more tooth-friendly way. Older crowns will at some point need replacement and often fantastic aesthetics can be achieved with the modern materials available. In the case to the left, the gum level has also been adjusted.

TREATMENT FOR WORN TEETH

DENTAL IMPLANTS

Wear of teeth is inevitable with time. Some people, however, wear down their teeth much faster than others. Wear can occur due to acid erosion e.g. due to citrus fruits, wine, a fizzy drink...or stomach acid, tooth grinding (often at night), or abrasion by overstrenuous tooth brushing. Treatment of wear cases can vary enormously but most can be treated conservatively without the need of multiple crowns that were once used.

Dental implants have revolutionised tooth replacement and are the closest dentistry can offer to new natural teeth. Dental implants, made of completely bio-compatible titanium, can be used to replace a single tooth with a crown or multiple teeth with bridges….or even to support otherwise loose dentures.

INMAN ALIGNER AND INVISALIGN ORTHODONTICS The use of appliances like the Inman Aligner or Invisalign has made orthodontics more accessible to many adults. The Inman case below (which took only 12 weeks), provided a very cost effective and non– invasive way of improving the appearance of teeth. Before:

from bathroom to calming SPA Bathrooms used to be all about practicality and function. Nowadays, it’s all about rest, relaxation and you-time. Vine and Badger Bathrooms show you how to create the ultimate spa experience in your home

2. Focus on bath shape and position Have you ever walked into a five-star spa to find it strewn with children’s bath toys, cosmetics and overflowing bath caddies? Probably not. Clean lines and open space are essential for a calming ambience in a bathroom. Mess and clutter will only increase tension. Consider a minimalist approach with the bath as the main feature. Take other clutter elsewhere.

1. Clean lines A free-standing bath will better create the spa experience, especially a contemporaryturned Victorian-style bath in which you can sit and relax with your back at the perfect angle. Create a bath menu by alternating luxurious bath salts, melts and other bubble bath products to feel your worries float away...

3. Invest in two basins for double the cleaning power That hectic morning rush and fight for the bathroom is no more when you have two basins! Perfect for working couples, a bathroom with two sinks can easily free up some time in the mornings. n Badger Bathrooms 8-9 Tubs Hill Parade, London Road, Sevenoaks TN13 1DH Visit www.badgerbathrooms.co.uk or call 01732 464450

LOVE YOUR

living room

When your home has a beautifully designed interior, you might not always want to have technology as your main visual feature. Vine meets Circle Automation to learn how you can seamlessly fit the latest technology into your living space without upsetting the balance

When you want to integrate technology subtly into your home, being ‘part of the furniture’ is the ideal solution for everything to blend together. You can experience your favourite films and TV from a stunning handcrafted ‘Picture Frame TV’, combining conventional mirror surfaces when the television is off, a frame designed to your taste and a sophisticated, crystalclear display system when the television is on. You can even integrate your television into a piece of bespoke furniture so it can be hidden when you are not watching it. Here are three great ideas for your living room from Circle Automation:

n For more information call 07766 001624 or visit www.circleautomation.co.uk

44 vine June 2012 vinedigital.co.uk

1.

If you’re after that cinema experience, install a projector and screen solution hidden in your ceiling that comes down at the touch of a button. All you have to do is sit back and enjoy an action-packed film in comfort and style, knowing your living room will be returned to peace and tranquillity when you have finished...with no sign that you had even been watching a film!

2.

Whether watching a movie or listening to your music collection, perfect sound reproduction can make all the difference. If you want your speakers to complement rather than conflict with your interior design, why not turn them into a piece of art? Consider installing speakers totally bespoke to your home with a photograph of your choice or piece of commissioned artwork. Or how about transforming your ceiling or walls into a speaker with a totally invisible audio solution.

3.

Do you have multiple remotes clogging up your coffee table? Do you always grab the wrong one when you want to hit pause, turn up the volume or simply turn a piece of equipment off ? Controlling your technology can be as simple as reducing five remotes to a touch screen tablet that sits happily as a digital picture frame when you are not using it.

HOME & GARDEN

This month, we take a look at the summer-inspired trends that can bring your home to life this season – from dainty floral lighting, to bold bright colour schemes

Go BOLD When it comes to the colours we choose for our home interiors we tend to play it safe...nudes, neutrals, creams, terracottas... how about mixing one of these with an intense bold colour that isn’t normally

Fairy-Lights This season bring green outdoor style indoors through eccentric, bold light fittings. Let your ceiling sparkle! Try the Häggås pendant lamp (£49.99), featuring LEDs that radiate from the end of each arm while using up to 85% less energy than incandescent bulbs so you’re helping the environment too. Also try the chrome-plated Onsjö chandelier (£44.99) with LED tubes that create a firefly effect – perfect for a midsummer’s evening! Those feeling very adventurous can go for the IKEA PS Maskrospendant lamp (£91.99) – a dandelion-shaped creation that when lit imitates dandelions being blown by the wind, giving decorative patterns on the walls. Let the room dissolve around you and be transported to fairyland! All lights from IKEA. n Visit www.ikea.com

used for a more dynamic look... like coral, mustard yellow, violet or bright green? How about a coral and stone dining area for example? Or a mustard yellow living room? Don’t be afraid to push those colour boundaries!

Go for Glass Modern Minimalist The minimalist look is very big for 2012, with many opting for the ‘less is more’ approach. It is easy to see how well this can work space-wise. Try for example a corner sofa instead of a traditional sofa with arm chairs. Not only are corner sofas bang on trend this summer, they also seat more people while enabling you to have greater space in your living room. A large statement sofa will ensure your room looks minimalist, but not barren. n Visit www.harveysfuniture.co.uk for inspiration

One of the easiest ways to add style to your home furnishings is by adding a glass coffee table for a contemporary feel. Many interior designers today are using the glass coffee table as their main focal point, although make sure to measure the space it will be placed in first, as some people naturally assume that coffee tables will fit anywhere! Another extra bonus – glass tables are easy to clean! Try this Frost Coffee Table (£199) from John Lewis. n Visit www.johnlewis.com

Oxygenate Your Pond

T

o maintain a healthy eco-system in your pond (and especially if you have fish), it is very important to keep the oxygen flowing in your pond. Fish need oxygen to breathe and water rich with it allows efficient biological filtration. A first way to provide sufficient oxygen is to buy a good quality pump. This will ensure that oxygen is continuously circulated through the water. Aeration devices such as water fountains, bubblers, and spitters break the water surface to encourage gas exchange. You can also buy pond aeration kits that will periodically inject oxygen directly into the water. You should frequently remove any waste and debris at the bottom of the pond using a net. Also remember to provide the right plants. Oxygenating plants like floating plants, anacharis and cabomba can help increase oxygen levels and improve water quality.

Beware of duck weed – it may look pretty but can choke the life out of a pond if it is left to roam. Finally, avoid excessive algae growth. A thick layer of filamentous or string algae indicates that the pond has excess algal nutrients, including too much carbon dioxide in the water. Ponds without oxygenation or gas exchange can unfortunately provide ideal growing conditions for such nuisance algae, which may need to be treated with chemicals.

EDUCATION AT COOLINGS Would you like to change your career, improve your knowledge, or receive help with your hobby? Look no further! Coolings Nurseries in Knockholt are running a variety of gardening and horticulture courses in their spacious lecture room at The Gardener’s Garden Centre. Tessa Allen is a Rhs Tutor at Coolings RHS Certificate in the Principles of Horticulture is a broad-ranging course taught three hours per week over six terms (two years), covering the full spectrum of horticultural subjects. It is ideal for beginners or those with some experience. Achievement on this course is assessed through nationally-set written examinations taken in February and June. The level of knowledge gained will be equivalent to a good level pass in a GCSE science subject. However, if you don’t fancy taking exams then you can enjoy this purely as a leisure course. Extending your Garden Horizons is a course devised by our RHS tutor, Tessa Allen, at the request of previous students who enjoyed learning at Coolings and didn’t want to stop! This is a course that is open to anyone who has an interest in gardening, regardless of whether they have attended any other classes. It is a non exam-based course taught three hours per week over 30 weeks, including 10 all-day visits to gardens and places of horticultural interest.

How to be a Gardener is for people who have an interest in gardening and want to know more but without taxing levels of science and complexity! No prior knowledge or experience is required. The course is divided into five modules, each of three hours per week over 30 weeks, and to give real experience of the topics covered there will also be a practical element to each module. Coolings Diploma in Garden Design is the perfect combination of creative design coupled with advanced plant and design knowledge. It is taught over two years for three hours per week.

GOLF

Playing in Paradise Set in an area of outstanding natural scenic beauty in the Kent countryside, golfers can tee off in total tranquillity at Darenth Valley Golf Course. Vine explores what the course has to offer

J

ust four miles north of Sevenoaks Darenth Valley Golf Course is an oasis of calm that can soothe even after the toughest, most tiring day in the office. Constructed in 1973 the 18-hole par 72 golf course is on gently undulating, chalk-based parkland which makes for easy walking – just what you need after a long day! The course offers a challenge to those with single figure handicaps as well as those newer to the game due to the gentle curves which can be difficult to judge. The peace and tranquillity is closer than you think too...less than 15 minutes from junctions three, four and five of

the M25 and a five-minute walk from Shoreham mainline station. You don’t always have to play golf, either! If you like, you can sit back and relax with a book and morning coffee, lunch or afternoon tea, while enjoying views of the first tee and 18th green; it’s the perfect retreat when you want to relax. Groups of walkers and cyclists are also a common sight so make sure to take your bike or walking shoes if you want to put your clubs aside for the day! How about having your wedding at Darenth Valley Golf Course? Wedding ceremonies and receptions, dinner dances, christenings and presentation evenings are all accommodated in the luxuriously spacious function suite. The clubhouse also opens its doors to offer a table d’hôte Sunday lunch on the first Sunday of each month for only £18.95 per person. n Visit www.dvgc.co.uk for more information or call 01959 522 944 for the clubhouse office and 01959 422922 for the Professional Shop and teaching professionals

The charm of Chelsfield Lakes Want to get more out of your golfing venue? Chelsfield Lakes Golf Centre is the perfect venue for golf days, societies, weddings, conferences, functions and members. Emily Louise Overy talks to the centre’s General Manager, Colin White, to find out more What makes Chelsfield Lakes a unique golf experience? We have stunning chalkbased courses that remain very dry, particularly in winter. This ensures that we are open all year round. We also have the facilities to cater for golfers of all abilities; our Golf Academy professionals offer coaching to everyone from newcomers to European Tour players. What can you offer children and young people? We actively encourage juniors at the golf centre and run a number of fun activities for them.

We hold various coaching sessions throughout the week, organise competitions each week for young members and provide coaching camps during school holidays which give youngsters three days of golfing experience. All juniors are invited to our Junior Awards Evening held at the end of the season where the year’s champions are presented with their trophies. They really enjoy it! What facilities do you have for weddings and conferences? The Lounge, which is fully airconditioned with its own bar, is perfectly suited to conferences

and can accommodate up to 60 people. Those looking for a smaller venue may find the Function Suite more suitable with its private setting overlooking the golf course. We also have an office room, ideal for up to 10 delegates. Our Head Chef can provide all the catering you need, and for weddings our stunning Club Room can seat up to 140 for a wedding breakfast and up to 200 for an evening buffet. Have you ever had any celebrities visit the centre? Yes! Six-time Singles Grand Slam winner and former World No.1 tennis professional, Boris Becker, dropped in to say hello on our annual Open Day in April. He swapped his tennis racket for a golf club and took time to sign autographs.

Customer Testimonial: “Chelsfield Lakes is the perfect setting for a wonderful reception. Every single guest commented on how amazing the day and evening was and how the room was presented perfectly. Megan and the team made everyone feel welcome and helped Mark and I organise our perfect wedding. We recommend it to anyone looking to hold a function. It really was outstanding!!” n Visit Chelsfield Lakes Golf Centre, Court Road, Orpington, Kent, BR6 9BX n For more information call 01689 896 266, visit www. chelsfieldlakesgolf.co.uk or email pro@chelsfieldlakesgolf.co.uk

Shakespeare at

St Clere

Sevenoaks Shakespeare Society is breaking new ground this month with its production of the famous tragedy Romeo and Juliet in the grounds of the St Clere Estate at Heaverham near Kemsing. Vine takes a look at the special event

he production, part of the Sevenoaks Summer Festival, is the society’s fourth foray into the open air, following the acclaimed A Midsummer Night’s Dream two years ago, and before that As You Like It and The Taming of the Shrew. All these were staged at the White Rock Inn at Underriver, but this time director Phil Newton wanted a background of buildings to represent the unruly streets of Verona. Phil Newton said: “It is a wonderful venue and we are very excited about using it as the setting for one of the greatest plays in the English language. Laugh and cry with us in a stunning new garden venue at its most uplifting.” The star-crossed lovers are played by 22-year-old Matthew Friett, a postgraduate student at Cambridge University and 21-year-old Nicola Clark, playing her first major Shakespearian role. The owner of St Clere, Eliza Ecclestone, hopes it will be the Festival’s “Glyndebourne” experience: “We’re very excited about welcoming the Sevenoaks Shakespeare Society to St Clere this summer. We hope that the formal gardens will provide the perfect backdrop for their performance. Fingers crossed for balmy English summer evenings!” Performances are from Thursday to Saturday, June 28–30 at 7.30pm, on Sunday July 1 at 2.30pm and on Wednesday to Saturday, July 4–7 at 7.30pm. Rafferty’s

of Sevenoaks will serve a barbecue from 6.00pm before evening performances and cream teas after the Sunday matinee. There will be a licensed bar in the Orangery serving wine and beer. Patrons can also bring their own picnics. Seating is unreserved. Bring your own (lowbacked) chairs or rugs, and warm clothing. Evenings can be chilly even in the height of summer! n Tickets (£15 in advance, £12 concessions) can be booked at the Festival Box Office 01732 450175 or online at www.stagsevenoaks.co.uk
