We have been very fortunate with the weather and all this sunshine makes us British appreciate how wonderful our country can be. Looking forward to summer, many of us will be dreaming of holidays by the sea, but closer to home our own coastline is not only a great spot for enjoying some rare good weather, it tells the tale of fascinating history, not least its blacker days when the Kent coast served as a haven for opportunist smugglers. Chris Bennett looks at this fascinating part of our history on page 24. More recently, a sense of progress and development has come to the Margate coastline with the Turner Contemporary Gallery celebrating a year of success. We visit the latest Turner exhibition to find out why he’s such a long-standing and significant artist. Another artistic find has come in the form of a newly acquired portrait of Lady Beaufort (Henry VIII’s grandmother) which was unveiled by TV historian David Starkey at Hever Castle – we speak to the Tudor expert to discover why he’s so enthusiastic about the Tudor period on page 56. With many planning their summer weddings and beyond, we go in search of the best venues, wedding planners and outfits to create that perfect wedding in 2012 – our eightpage special starts on page 28. TV historian unveils rare portrait

Bearing the torch for Sevenoaks

Celebrity historian David Starkey unveiled a rare portrait of Henry VIII’s grandmother, Margaret Beaufort, which marked the start of Hever Castle’s 2012 celebrations on Tuesday March 6. The portrait, which has been added to an impressive Tudor collection, is already on permanent exhibition in the castle. March also saw Hever Castle launch its new luxury bed and breakfast accommodation. The 21 en-suite bedrooms can now be booked individually by guests looking for an overnight stay or short break in the romantic castle. The rooms provide luxury accommodation whilst retaining the classic and historic influences of their surroundings.

18-year-old Billy Callway from Otford has been chosen to be a 2012 Olympic torch bearer and is the only Sevenoaks resident to run through the town with the torch. It is a remarkable achievement for Billy, who three years ago had a tumour removed from his knee. After fearing that he would never run again Billy is now a qualified football coach and volunteers in Otford’s Hospices of Hope tearooms. Billy, of Dane Road, is one of 8,000 torch bearers and his run will be televised around the world.

Indulge in a tale of corruption, betrayal, decadence and greed with AD Miller’s debut novel, Snowdrops. Set in Moscow, the former correspondent for the Economist writes of a time when “There are no politics stories. There are no love stories. There are only crime stories”, with ‘snowdrop’ being the Moscow slang for a corpse concealed by snow. Described by William Boyd as “A tremendously assured, cool, complex, slow-burn of a novel and a bleak and superbly atmospheric portrait of modern Russia”, the book explores the tawdriness of life in the underbelly of modern Moscow. Look out for AD Miller later this year as he is due to appear at the Sevenoaks Literary Celebrations.

Centenary celebrations for

Sevenoaks Hockey Club 2012 sees Sevenoaks Hockey Club celebrate its centenary. Formed in 1911, the club has cemented itself firmly in the Sevenoaks community producing successful hockey teams and a strong social unity. Vine takes a look at the historic hockey club

I

Six presidents in

100 years

Without doubt the stability of the club has been due to the fact that the club has only ever had six longstanding presidents. Lord Sackville was the first back in 1921 before his brother Sir John Charles Sackville inherited the presidency of the Hockey Club along with Knole House and Knole Park. Sir Charles had a notable career in the army and led a brigade during the early stage of the Battle of the Somme during World War I. Following Sir John, Harold Breething became president for 10 years before William Roxburgh was the club president for an impressive 19 years. William was described as a “natural leader” and a “welcoming president”, who ensured that all “members felt included at the various hockey

t’s amazing to think that the Sevenoaks Hockey Club’s first committee meeting was held just eight months after the Titanic sank and 10 months after Captain Scott conquered the South Pole. The year was 1912, matches were arranged by post with ha’penny stamps and were played on bumpy grass with leather balls. The players only received a slice of lemon at half-time, there was no clubhouse and perhaps even more tragic – there was not a cup of tea in sight! Now you only have to look at the fantastic facilities and the successful teams playing at the highest levels to see how far the club has progressed. Part of the club’s progression has been down to the fact that it still remains the happy and sociable place that it has always been. Over the years it has become somewhat of a family, providing a fun and welcoming place for the community of Sevenoaks to socialise. And the club’s progression continues to grow with over 300 children registering

to join the junior clubs at the start of the centenary year. In true fashion, Sevenoaks Hockey Club is celebrating its centenary in style. The club is holding a number of events in an action-packed weekend. On Saturday April 14 the celebrations will start with some fabulous matches for both the girls and boys under-16 teams. Following this, the ladies' and men’s 1st teams will both be playing exhibition matches. To round off the day, a ball will be held in the evening, which will include a champagne reception, a three-course meal and a live band. On Sunday April 15 more hockey matches will be played in the morning before a most spectacular exhibition match takes place at 1pm. Both men’s and ladies' teams will be wearing the kit that was first worn in 1912 and will even be using the sticks, balls and rules from the period. In spectacular fashion and in keeping with the period, the visiting teams will be brought to the match through the town in a horse-drawn omnibus. Spectators are also encouraged to wear Edwardian dress. The weekend really does promise to be an unforgettable event – long may it continue!

social events”. Adrian Greenwood took over the presidency in 1992 after being a club captain for 20 years. Adrian, who never married, became like a surrogate father to many with the club proving to be his family. Current president Iain Pearson joined the club in the 1960s, playing for every team in the men’s section along the way, and succeeded Adrian in 2008. Described as a naturally warm and friendly person, Iain typifies the Sevenoaks Hockey Club style of welcoming anyone who wants to become a member. And his message for the future? “Join us – we intend to have just as much fun in a 100 years’ time!” n For more information about the centenary celebrations and the history of the club visit www.sevenoakshockeyclub.co.uk

MYSTERY SHOPPER PUTS RENCRAFT TOP Rencraft, who has been fitting kitchens for over 30 years, is still surprising people to this day after a glowing ‘mystery shopper’ report in KBB Review magazine. The company came top in a recent ‘shopping around’ feature which covered many of the local kitchen specialists, named as a “hidden gem”. Director of Rencraft John Stephens said: “We’re very versatile and customers appreciate that we are genuinely bespoke. It’s a long journey from first look to final fitting and you need excellent designers who listen to the customer and build up a good rapport.” Tucked away in Seal Chart, yet only a few miles from Sevenoaks town centre, Rencraft has a stunning showroom. The mystery shopper said of the premises: “The showroom was well worth the trip. Modern glass doors opened on to a surprisingly stylish interior with solid wood kitchens sporting granite worktops and butler’s sinks, all nicely presented under warm lighting.” n For more information visit www.rencraft.co.uk and to read the review visit www.kbbreview.com n Got some news about your business that you want to share? PROTECT YOUR WEALTH Insurance offers protection from financial risk. So it’s particularly important to get your home’s building and contents valuations right to avoid the pitfall of under-insurance. Nick Day of local broker Chris Knott Insurance explains

U

nder-insurance presents a financial hazard for homeowners, especially those with more to lose. But how does it occur? Here’s an example: you estimate the rebuild value of your home to be £600,000 so you cover it for £600,000. However, it turns out that the rebuild value should be £750,000. You’re under-insured. In the event of the complete destruction of your home, by fire perhaps, insurers will treat your claim in different ways. For example, you may only receive the £600,000 you’re insured for. If the building is listed and there’s a mandatory rebuild order you’ll have to find the extra £150,000. If it’s not listed, you’ll have the option of constructing a smaller home for £600,000 but you’ll need the extra £150k to get back to your original position. Some insurers may even refuse to pay your claim completely. Assuming instead the fire caused just £100,000 of damage, if the insurer agrees to pay out, at best you may only receive the following: Claim (£100,000) x (Sum Insured (£600,000) ÷ Actual Value (£750,000)) = £80,000 You only arranged cover for 80 per cent of the true value so they’ll probably only pay out 80 per cent of the claim. Can you afford the shortfall? Moving onto contents, the danger here is the tendency to look at the resale value rather than the replacement value. Policies aimed at affluent homeowners include ‘new-for-old’ cover which, as it suggests, means old items are replaced with new n For more information, visit chrisknott.co.uk/private or call 0844 576 0659

Rebuild is the cost of constructing a new home to the same specification on the land which you already own, so it could be lower than the purchase price or estate agent’s valuation ones following a claim. For example, your 10-year-old, obsolete, Apple iBook may only be worth £50 but its replacement value would be that of a new MacBook as its nearest neighbour (£1,000-£2,000 dependent on model). So it’s worth making sure you accurately assess the replacement value of all your personal items. Don’t just dismiss the eventuality of losing a single item – think about how much it would cost to replace everything after that fire! If you have a jewellery collection, values will alter as the price of precious metals and an item’s collectibility, fluctuates. Collections of art, antiques and wine can be complex too. The good news is that an insurance broker who specialises in looking after high-value homes and possessions should be able to offer a free insurance review. This will help you assess the true rebuild and replacement costs and protect your finances from the under-insurance risk.

Reader offer FREE private client's consultation: a home insurance review for high-value homes and possessions (offer ends 04/05/12)

Q. How can the government and SMEs support the local unemployed? A. Small businesses (SMEs) may be small, but that does not mean they should be overlooked. SMEs account for half of UK business turnover and 6 out of 10 jobs in the private sector. The latest data shows that 70 per cent of all businesses in Sevenoaks employ no more than four people. Furthermore, SMEs are the main creator of new jobs. When they do well, we all benefit. Just before last month’s budget I spent a day visiting local members of the Federation of Small Businesses. I met seven companies in all. I wanted to find out how they could expand their business and what, if any, help they’d like from government. I then reported back direct to the chancellor. Some problems were familiar. Two of the seven could be bigger but were struggling to get more funding from their banks. The banks have become more cautious about their lending, or

have tightened their terms – at exactly the point when we want the economy to grow. Regulation is a perennial beef, especially the interpretation of health and safety rules and licensing requirements. Many SMEs will do everything possible to avoid taking on a single extra member of staff at a time when there are over 300 under-25s looking for a job in Sevenoaks. That’s why government has to keep trying to reduce the burdens on business, especially the cost of red tape. In the end, government itself cannot create jobs. Only businesses do that. Across Sevenoaks and nearby business parks we have lots of successful small companies selling and exporting to the world. We need even more of them. n Have a question for the MP? As a parent with a daughter in Year 1 at St John’s Church of England Primary, I have been blown away by what a fantastic school St John’s is and by the true commitment and enthusiasm of its staff, who have literally turned the place around over the last couple of years. We did not choose the school for our daughter as we were so concerned about its previous reputation, but living only a five-minute walk away, the inevitable happened and we were allocated it despite it not being one of our three choices. Appealing against the decision was not something we wanted to have to go through, so we decided to give St John’s a chance and have honestly never looked back – it is a very special place – a diverse state school offering a rounded education and encouraging every child to reach his or her full potential. SECOND INTERVIEW

So what’s the format for the tour? It’s about taking the plunge and devising a show that is fully scripted. It has stand-up, sketches, interaction with the audience, and a few things that will startle people. Working on a tour that starts off as a mere jotting on the back of a fag packet and develops into a spectacular show is a sheer joy! Do you enjoy performing live or is it still nerve-racking?

Every month we interview a notable member of your community

Paul Merton One of the best-loved comedians in the country, Paul Merton is taking Out Of My Head – his first new written show since 1998 – on a 50-date tour of the UK this spring in the company of his highly talented pals Lee Simpson, Richard Vranch and Suki Webster

I get such a buzz from performing live; it’s just the best rush in the world, better than anything else you can think of! Ralph Richardson used to talk about pushing a huge ball up a hill to the point where it suddenly gains momentum and starts rolling down the other side. That’s what live comedy is like. The only snag is, you have to do it while trying to look completely relaxed! Do you feel prepared for the tour? Doing The Comedy Store Players every Sunday, means you’re match-fit all the time. It’s a performance muscle. If it’s not getting flexed, it gets flabby. That’s why people who haven’t been onstage for a while struggle when they go back to the theatre because it’s a completely different discipline. Do you prefer having a rehearsed script or just improvising?

We all love impro; it’s great to have no rehearsals, lighting design or costume fittings. And of course, it’s fantastic not to have to learn any lines! We go to Edinburgh every year with no preparation apart from turning up sober! Sometimes we have to borrow a pen and paper from the barman to write down the order of the impro games. The rehearsal process is stressful at the beginning, but if and when you pull it off, there’s a deeper degree of satisfaction because you’ve worked on it for six months. The idea of honing something till you’re really happy with it is very, very rewarding. I just can’t wait to get out there and start doing the show! Do you all work well together on stage? Because of our experience of having worked together for 25 years with The Comedy Store Players, we already have a short-hand. Onstage, we instantly know what’s right and what’s not. We save a lot of time because we know each other so well. n Out Of My Head will be showing at The Assembly Hall Theatre, Tunbridge Wells on April 30. Tickets cost £23 (conc. £20). to paint. Turner is said to have remarked to John Ruskin that “the skies over Thanet are the loveliest in all Europe” and the latest exhibition of his works, ‘Turner and the Elements’ proves his obsession with the landscape. Eighty-eight works are on show until May 13, including a number of works featuring Margate and the north-Kent coast, illustrating how his painting technique, and the influence of the latest scientific and technological developments of his time, revolutionised landscape painting. In the 1820s and 1830s Turner lodged with Sophia Booth in a house that was located on the same site as Turner Contemporary. The windows from the house provided Turner with an ever-changing view over the beach, pier and jetty and Margate became a central subject in many of his works made at that time. In these images of Margate and the Kentish coast, Turner’s fascination with the elements, air and water, is apparent. The show focuses on the theme of the elements in the artist’s work and is divided into five sections: Earth, Water, Air, Fire and Fusion. The exhibition is excellently executed due to its sheer simplicity; big open spaces and the lack of hi-tech gadgets ensure that nothing interferes with the drama of Turner’s work. It has also been highly praised by the critics. The Telegraph’s Alastair Sooke called it “utterly uplifting” and The Observer’s Laura Cumming said: “Of the several Turner shows opening in 2012, this may be the most exhilarating. Start here.” In addition, April is an exciting time to visit the gallery as special guest, historian Simon Schama, CBE, will be speaking at a ‘Turner Lecture and Dinner’ on April 25 in order to

long with Margate’s die-hard local supporters, the Turner Contemporary gallery has ignited some much-needed support, funding and regeneration work into Margate. ‘Old Town’ is now a thriving cultural hotspot “with many cafés, arty boutiques, retro-shops and old fishing shacks on the harbour which have been transformed into studios”, according to David Prest, who nominated the new gallery for the Best UK Tourism Project. The gallery has received national and international acclaim since it opened in April 2011, and Margate was named the UK’s top ‘Cool Culture’ destination by The Times newspaper last year. It’s been a bit of an uphill struggle, but the only way is up it seems with this increasingly popular seaside town. But what about the gallery’s namesake? JMW Turner went to school in Margate from the age of 11 to 14, and the town’s dramatic seascape stuck in his mind, luring him back again and again to its coastline © TATE, LONDON

© RICHARD BRYANT

Before the Turner Contemporary gallery opened its doors, Margate was perhaps a little off the beaten track for many, but now it has secured its position on the cultural map once more, says Charlotte Luxford raise funds for the gallery’s future exhibitions and journalist and TV presenter Janet Street-Porter will be sharing her passion for rambling on April 26, among a series of other Easter events. The Turner lecture and dinner evening will begin with a drinks reception alongside Rodin’s ‘The Kiss’, followed by the lecture in the South Gallery surrounded by oil paintings shown in the ‘Turner and the Elements’ exhibition. A seasonally inspired menu will be served in the Foyle Rooms overlooking ‘the loveliest skies in all Europe’, with tickets from £85 per person. With an estimated economic impact of £3m on Margate since opening April last year, the Turner Contemporary can yield only a positive outcome and should spur on the creative nature of this fascinating town. Our resident foodie Benjamin James of the George & Dragon in Chipstead reveals what’s been keeping the pub busy this month and shares his favourite recipes

Regular readers will know that our menus at the George & Dragon, Chipstead change daily to reflect what is available locally and seasonally. For the new readers among you, every month in ‘Food for Thought’ I share with you what local ingredients can be found on our menus and in fields and farm shops near you. I share suggestions of how you might want to prepare them in the hope that some of you might also support local suppliers when cooking at home. THIS MONTH’S FOODIE FAVOURITES

For the latest news, visit our new website at www.georgeanddragonchipstead.com and follow us @GeorgeChipstead on Twitter

Cocktail of the month: Rhubarb Mojito

Place the mint leaves in the palm of one hand, clap your other hand down on top to bash the mint; this will start to release the vapour and oils from the leaves. Place the leaves and sugar in the bottom of a cocktail shaker, add the juice of four limes, chopped rhubarb and rum, pour over a small scoop of cubed ice, place the lid on top and shake vigorously. Pour everything into a tall glass with more ice, top with soda. 1x small handful of mint 4x wedges of lime 1x tsp white sugar 1x 0.5 tsp brown sugar 50ml x white rum Handful of ripe sliced rhubarb

Smoked haddock, purple sprouting broccoli, hollandaise sauce and seaweed

This month sees the local Kentish farm shop shelves bulging with the freshest forced rhubarb and florets of one of my favourite vegetables: purple sprouting broccoli. Sautéed with some butter and eaten al dente, it is difficult to find a more delicious addition to the vegetable basket at this time of year. Those ramblers among you might have noticed the faint lingering aroma of garlic in the air as you walk through some of Kent’s beautiful woodland. This is the first sign that wild garlic, which has been laying dormant over winter, is beginning to push its way through the soil in search of the spring sunshine. In about six weeks' time the woodland air will be pungent with its smell and it will be ripe for picking. May’s edition will feature advice about how to identify this lovely herb, and how best to cook it.

New website and loyalty card March was a busy month for the George & Dragon, Chipstead which saw the launch of the new website with additional features such as booking online, meet our suppliers and our latest reviews. KENT’S

Corrupt Shores Described as a “national evil” by parliament but a “saviour” by others, notorious smuggling gangs divided the nation in two and the coastal lines of Kent became bloody battlegrounds as organised crime flourished. Chris Bennett takes a look at the history of Kentish smuggling

A

poor domestic economy at the start of the 17th century saw Kent in a depressed state and many people of the Weald were reduced to poverty. More and more everyday items were becoming unaffordable and imported goods were given customs and excise duties which saw their prices double and even treble. With dire wages and low incomes the residents of Kent looked at other options. A farm labourer for example, could earn no more than 7/- for a whole week's work. However, he could expect 10/- for a night’s effort of unloading cargos and carrying contraband to hidden locations. In short, Kent smuggling was born. Close to the shores of continental Europe and with roads leading to London, Kent had the ideal conditions necessary for organised smuggling to prosper, and prosper it did. Smuggling took Britain in its grasp and the black economy became so topical that Rudyard Kipling felt compelled to write a poem about the smuggling trade: “If you wake at midnight and hear a horse’s feet, don’t go drawing back the blind or looking in the street, them that ask no questions, isn’t told a lie, watch the wall my darling while the gentleman go by.” Many took Kipling’s advice to save getting themselves into bother with the smuggling gangs. Kentish folk feared the gangs and for good reason; smugglers terrorised the countryside, resorting to murder, extortion and blackmail in order to maintain control. It was organised crime at the highest level. To give you some kind of idea of exactly how efficient the gangs were, the larger firms had foreign suppliers, a large group of seamen, local labourers, henchmen, a secretary, an accountant and some gangs even employed surgeons and solicitors. The problem became so bad that the Royal Navy declared war on smuggling and all of its associates. Taxes were high and anarchy was looming, the government were losing revenue and

authority. Drastic action was needed and soon Kent’s coastline became the most heavily protected throughout the entire British Isles. Hardly surprising when you consider that a third of all the tea and half of the gin that came into England was first landed in Kent and Sussex. Bloodthirsty battles now commenced on

the Kentish shores as gangs of armed men, up to 200 at a time, were regularly unloading large quantities of brandy, tea, tobacco, fabrics and other merchandise. Before the Navy intervened and devised a coast blockade of 1,465 men, a typical encounter would see customs officials outnumbered by at least 40 smugglers. Soon enough the law breakers were forced to

LEGAL MATTERS The team at Warners Solicitors offer regular expert advice on topics relevant to our everyday lives. This month Rayma Collins advises on the Pre-Nuptial Agreement Q: What is a ‘Pre-Nup’, do I need one and how much will it cost? disguise their activities and hide their identity wherever possible. When the smuggling gangs were not fighting with the customs officers and the Navy, they were often fighting amongst themselves. The most brutal of the gangs was said to be the Seacocks of Hawkhurst, who first stepped into the spotlight when members of the gang stood trial for the torture and murder of two men in 1748. The Seacocks also regularly ambushed customs officers recovering cargos of confiscated contraband, but the gang’s fearsome reputation perhaps reached its pinnacle when they pretended to collaborate with the Wingham (Middle left) Brutal smugglers fending off customs officers; (Bottom) A smuggling ship chased by a Naval Brig

A: Pre-Nup is the slang term used for a Pre-Nuptial Agreement which is a document setting out how a marrying couple would wish to share their individual and jointly owned assets, should they subsequently separate. Most people who enter into these agreements do so simply to try and avoid the inevitable distress, upset and expense which arises should they subsequently separate when what are often regarded as the very thorny issues of sharing pensions, savings and income will undoubtedly need to be determined. Taking a very broad approach, if you answer yes to any of the following questions, it would certainly be sensible to obtain specific legal advice about your circumstances:

• Are you the wealthier party in the relationship? • Are you marrying later in life and consequently have savings, pensions or investments that you acquired sometime before you and your intended met? • Have you been married before and do you have assets arising from that separation which you wish to protect in the event of separation? • Have you children from a previous relationship whose financial future you wish to secure? • Have you received, or might you receive, an interest in a trust or inheritance that if you and your intended were to separate, you/your family would feel unhappy about sharing with them? • Do you own an interest in a business which you would be reticent to share with your spouse should you separate?

In a joint venture to unload 11 tons of tea, the Hawkhurst Seacocks turned their swords on the Wingham gang, taking all of the tea, riding away with 40 of the gang’s horses and leaving seven brutally injured. The other notorious Kent smuggling gang

were the Men of Mayfield, who were far less violent and more strategic. Instead of beating customs officers senseless they preferred to restrain them and tie them up to avoid capture. But even when they were captured they proved to be slippery customers. Through their connections or their sweet talking, they often won the sympathy of the magistrates, who not only dismissed their cases but also sometimes ordered the arrest or flogging of the arresting officer. One smuggler who rode with both the

26 vine April 2012 vinedigital.co.uk

Hawkhurst and the Mayfield gang was Gabriel Tomkins from Tunbridge Wells. Originally a humble bricklayer, Gabriel turned to the lucrative smuggling industry, riding with the Men of Mayfield before leading them. Known for his skill of executing audacious smuggling runs and evading capture, Gabriel remarkably turned his back on the smuggling trade and became a revenue officer dedicated to fighting smuggling. But it seems that life on the right side of the law became somewhat mundane for Gabriel – he returned to a life of crime, this time joining the Hawkhurst gang. Gabriel was also believed to have been involved in the famous “Battle of Goudhurst” which ignited the demise of the Hawkhurst Seacocks. The pleasant village of Goudhurst was bullied by the gang, who demanded horses, men, spies and money. Eventually the villagers rebelled and formed a vigilante militia to defend their village, which was led by a recently discharged soldier. Thomas Kingsmill, leader of the Hawkhurst gang, discovered the militia’s plan and vowed to sack the village of Goudhurst and murder all who lived there. He was even so bold as to make an appointment to do so. On the day of the battle, women and children were moved to the next village as the Seacocks arrived barechested and armed with guns and swords.

Battle commenced in the churchyard of Goudhurst Church, (where bullet holes can still be found in the gravestones) and it was surprisingly short lived. Underestimating the Goudhurst militia, the Hawkhurst gang were defeated, turning tail and fleeing with the few men that still survived. Legend has it that Gabriel Tomkins survived the battle but he was eventually brought to justice after a committing a highway robbery. His life was ended in the gallows. So just as the Hawkhurst gang and Gabriel Tomkins perished, so too did smuggling in general. The government clamped down in every possible way. Vessels smaller than 50 tons were impounded and destroyed if they were anywhere within six miles of the shore, any boats with four or more oars were outlawed, any man carrying firearms or covering their identity was seized, bounties were put upon the heads of notorious smugglers and the force of the coastguards was beginning to sting. But the final nail in the coffin came in 1840 when Britain introduced a free-trade policy that slashed import duties to affordable levels. Large-scale smuggling began to crumble and within ten years it remained motionless on the seabed of society.

Planning your wedding:

THE ESSENTIALS

Congratulations, you’re engaged! As you celebrate this exciting new stage in your life, you also need to start planning for the day of your dreams. From a divine dress to fabulous flowers, here are the 10 essential planning elements every couple needs to think about VENUE: Hot venues get booked up quickly, so make this a priority – you can’t name the day until you know whether your venue is available. If the venue you love is outside your budget consider a weekday or off-peak event. THE DRESS: It can take at least six months to ensure the dress will be ready for your nuptials and most bridal boutiques require an appointment. Don’t forget those all-important accessories, including a veil, shoes, jewellery, a tiara and your ‘something blue’.

PHOTOGRAPHY: Do you want to capture everything from the preparation to the last dance or just the ceremony? Arrange to meet two or three of your favourites and if a photographer makes you feel relaxed and confident then you’re on to a winner.

STATIONERY: Stationery sets the tone the minute your ‘save-thedate’ card lands on the doormat. Invitations should be sent out two to three months before the wedding and matched it with the evening invitations, RSVP cards, order of service, menu cards, place settings and table plans.

TRANSPORT: From a classic car to an old-school red bus, transport for the bride is just the beginning; think about how the groom and the rest of the wedding party will arrive and whether you need to lay on transport for guests.

FLOWERS: As well as the bride’s bouquet, you’ll need to organise corsages for special guests, mini bouquets for the flower girls, buttonholes and arrangements for your ceremony and reception around six to eight months beforehand.

WEDDING CAKE: Find a baker around six months before the wedding and talk to the venue about the logistics of delivering, storing, presenting and serving your wedding cake.

HAIR AND MAKE-UP: Reserve time for a trial in the weeks leading up to your wedding and take inspiration from magazine pages and websites; it’s much easier than trying to describe what you want.

ENTERTAINMENT: Think about the mood you want to create and start your search early – the best entertainers are booked up months in advance. HONEYMOON: After all your hard work, you deserve a fabulous honeymoon but don’t leave the booking too far down your to-do list! Plan a honeymoon for shortly after your wedding date to keep the celebration going.

O

ne of the first decisions made when planning your wedding day is the venue. Wanting it to reflect your style and individuality as a couple is key, along with convenience and not forgetting a beautiful location – so it can be a difficult order to fill. Luckily, the gently rolling hills that surround Darenth Valley Golf Course offer a stunning setting to host the most picturesque of events. From spring this year, the clubhouse has been approved as a venue for civil ceremonies and partnerships; the course will open its doors to host wedding ceremonies and receptions so you can enjoy the ease of having your wedding catered for under one roof. With a lengthy history of organising weddings, Darenth Valley Golf Course has an abundance of connections with local florists, bridal wear suppliers, stationers, photographers and other companies you may require, removing the complications which come with organising the most important day of your life. And they will not be fazed by the odd teary-eyed bride or groom! Start off the party by toasting the newlyweds in the grounds overlooking the beautiful North Downs, then step inside to the stylish function rooms to enjoy a wedding feast. There are multiple catering options available; choose from a variety of set menus for a formal meal with refined courses such as sirloin stuffed with mushroom duxelle served with Madeira sauce, or even indulge in the ‘design-your-own’ menu option. For a less formal occasion, perhaps consider the choice finger buffet or a delicious hog roast or barbecue in the summer months. Whatever your needs, you can be sure that the course’s dedicated head chef Karl will be delighted to work with

you to provide a wedding breakfast fit for your wants and needs. All the food is prepared on the premises, utilising local produce and suppliers wherever possible so that you are assured of the highest standards. With a capacity of up to 200, the clubhouse can accommodate small or large parties, and has a private entrance, dance floor and fully licensed bar. A very high level of customer satisfaction is achieved by every wedding they hold with past clients stating: “I will have no hesitation in recommending you to others who wish to have a wedding reception at a venue where nothing is too much trouble to make the day perfect.” At Darenth Valley planning your wedding becomes about the bride and groom's requirements, wishes and dreams. Whilst not everything is possible, DVGC believes most are achievable and the staff will go above and beyond to ensure your day is perfect.

BEST DRESSED Lace laden Brides can thank Kate Middleton and the latest Twilight instalment for the long sleeves and lace trend – it seems designers can’t get enough of it and have reinvented what used be considered quite an old-fashioned fabric. Wearing a wedding gown in a nonwhite or ivory hue was, until recently, considered a pretty radical move. Then, a few seasons ago, we began seeing subtle pops of colour, from the faintest hint of silver or lilac to bright lettuce green but colour was still the exception rather than the rule. This season, however, blush and pink shades appeared on dozens of runways, marking its official debut as an expected – not quirky – wedding gown hue. Perhaps this has something to do with Reese Witherspoon’s blush Monique Lhuillier wedding gown. SKIN SOLUTIONS Dr Johanna Ward, Medical Director of The Skin Clinic Sevenoaks, provides the answers to all your cosmetic queries. This month she looks at the benefits of skincare Q: How can I improve my skin before my summer wedding? I have some fine lines and wrinkles around my eyes and have some brown spots on my cheeks? Jenny, Otford A: There are many different ways to get glowing, luminous skin before a big event such as a wedding. If you are looking for a quick boost, treatments such as microdermabrasion and chemical peels can give your skin an instant glow by removing the dead and redundant skin cells on the outermost layer of your skin known as the epidermis. These treatments are a controlled way of removing cellular debris that makes the skin look dull and tired – great for a one-off quick fix, but if you want lasting results then they ideally need to be done as a series of treatments. If you have a bit more time on your hands then there are some very good treatments for brown spots or hyperpigmentation on the face that will also improve fine lines and wrinkles. The best treatment on the market is a prescription-only skincare treatment programme by Obagi Medical. The treatment takes 18 weeks but will definitely yield fantastic results. Not only will it improve the whole texture and tone of your skin but your skin will look completely revitalised and refreshed ready for your big day. These creams contain active ingredients so can only be obtained from a cosmetic doctor via prescription. There are some other products that do not require a prescription that can help reduce facial pigmentation. Skinceuticals do a good non-prescription range for excess pigmentation which you can buy in medical skin clinics.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) can also be used to erase sunspots or pigmentation. The pulsed light causes the excess melanin in the skin to break down and over time the pigmentation simply disappears. Most people will need a course of IPL treatments every four weeks for optimal results so you will need to plan these treatments. Daily sunblock (ideally SPF 50) should be worn on the face to prevent pigmentation or discolouration from developing in the first place. It should also be worn to prevent treated hyperpigmentation from returning. For the fine lines and wrinkles around your eyes there are numerous treatments. Botox is probably the most common treatment to help reduce and soften lines around the eyes. It involves a few tiny injections into the area and takes up to two weeks to work so make sure you plan ahead. Other treatments for wrinkles around the eyes include medical-grade eye creams that your clinician can recommend or skilled application of dermal fillers into the lines to plump and soften them. Another option for overall skin rejuvenation and reducing fine lines and pigmentation is dermaroller treatment. This treatment is also known as collagen induction therapy and involves passing a roller over the skin that causes thousands of tiny columns of micro-trauma to the skin to stimulate the body to produce collagen. This is a new treatment that is generating much excitement as the before and after results can be astounding. So if you have a special occassion coming up and want radiant, glowing skin why not try some advanced skin care products that actually effect a change in your skin and produce a visible, real difference

GET BACK ON TRACK We may have been keen to lose the pounds after Christmas, but by now, many of us will have fallen off the bandwagon. Here are 10 top tips to getting fit in preparation for summer EXERCISE & DIET ARE KEY

BE CONSISTENT

This is the easy one: exercise or diet alone won’t work. A regular exercise routine and healthy food plan based around your lifestyle is the best way to lose body fat.

Consistency is more important than volume. Working out two to three days per week will produce more results than haphazard workouts.

FITNESS PYRAMID If fat loss is your goal think of your fitness routine as a pyramid. The foundation is cardio exercise, at least 30 minutes a day; on top of that there’s stretching to aid flexibility and at the top of the pyramid add strength training.

TRY THE WEIGHTS Weight training is essential to burn body fat. For every pound of muscle you gain, your body burns 30-50 additional calories per day.

ENJOY IT!

SHORT-TERM GOALS If you’re having trouble getting motivated, write down two or three realistic goals you hope to have accomplished in 30 days. At the end of the 30 days, you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment because your goals were short-term, reasonable and measurable.

DON’T OVER-DO CARDIO Always perform resistance training and cardio as part of your overall fitness programme and don’t go over 50-60 minutes of cardio.

EATING PLAN

You’ve got to enjoy your exercise or you’ll never stick at it so if you don’t enjoy cardiovascular exercise, invest in an upbeat dance video tape, or take a belly dancing or archery class.

Some sort of structured eating plan from Monday to Friday is highly recommended. You can take some liberties at the weekend, but if you plan what you’ll be eating for each meal and snack, you’re less likely to reach for the fatty foods.

GIVE IT YOUR ALL

CONTROL SUGAR LEVELS

Exercise can unlock all sorts of potential in your life by making you stronger, leaner, healthier and more nimble so it’s worth putting the effort in.

The best way to control blood sugar and insulin levels through your diet is to eat three small meals and two to three small snacks spread out over every two to three hours.

ELEGANT WINDOW SOLUTIONS Does your property look like it could do with a face-lift but you don’t want to lose its period charm? Don’t despair – The Heritage Window Company has introduced an innovative replacement sash window which has all the benefits of modern-day technology

H

ere’s the predicament: you have a beautiful Victorian or Georgian home and the windows really need replacing, but you worry about putting in unsightly new-looking frames. So, what do you do? The Heritage Window Company has the answer in the form of its traditional box sashes, painstakingly reproduced so that they blend in seamlessly with your period property. While the phrase ‘double glazing’ may send alarm bells ringing for those who are keen to maintain their original features, The Heritage Window Company’s new Benenden ultra-slim aluminium sash windows have clear thermally

effecient sealed units which reduce noise and provide maximum insulation to reduce heat loss. Therefore, you achieve the benefits of efficient glazing without having to compromise the elegance of your home. In addition, unlike wood, the aluminium windows will not rot or break down, and have been cleverly designed to fit your original timber outerframes. If the frames are in poor condition, then any repairs can be carried out by directly employed craftsmen as part of the

installation process. There’s a wide range of colours and glazing options to choose from and the durable powder coating means you’ll never have to repaint the frames. One client said of their sash windows: “We’re thrilled with our new sash windows...Your professionalism and attention to detail was second to none.” Should the property have existing casement windows such as Steel Crittalls, then The Heritage Window Company can provide its unique Benenden window,

which is the slimmest aluminium window available on the market. This has been specifically designed to replace Crittall style windows retaining character without losing aesthetic appeal in the process. Naturally this is also an ideal solution for new-build projects where minimalist design is part of the criteria. To complement the product portfolio, the company also has a comprehensive range of Bi-fold doors. With such diversity, The Heritage Window Company is positioned to provide an elegant solution to Window and Door replacement or new-build projects. n For more information visit www.thwc.co.uk#vine or call 01732 461919

EW TECHNOLOGIES: BEST FOR BUSINESS EW Technologies, based in Tunbridge Wells, has provided water treatment to businesses and homes all over the UK for the past 10 years and it has recently been named a finalist at the 2012 Business Excellence Awards. Vine talks to the successful company

E

W Technologies has gone from strength to strength since being established in 2002 and it has now been recognised for its exceptional services. The business was among 250 companies participating in the prestigious 2012 Business Excellence Awards this year and it is proud to be named as a finalist in the European Overall Best Company category. Oliver Ginty, director of EW Technologies, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be representing Kent at the European awards. 2012 will be our 10th year in business and with the fantastic progress we

made in 2011 we are expecting 2012 to be another record-breaking year.” One of the company’s most popular products is its water softener system which removes 100 per cent of lime scale while saving customers over £600 a year on hot water costs and cleaning products. EW Technologies' emphasis on striving to give its customers the

best possible experience has been at the foundation of its success and offering affordable products is something extremely important to Oliver: “We’ve reduced costs across all sectors in the business and we are passing these savings onto the customer which means that we are able to reduce the price of our products by half.”

Oliver also puts the company’s success down to the associates working in the company. “Our associates work extremely hard to provide the best quality service to our customers and are highly trained to handle customer queries and sales orders over the phone. EW Technologies is proving that with the right systems and people in place, companies can compete at the highest levels in Europe.” Vine wishes EW Technologies the best of luck when they attend the awards ceremony this year. n For more information call 02033 840204, visit www.ewtechnologies.co.uk or see advert on page 17

PLANT doctor Mark Reeve is the Plant Doctor at Coolings, The Gardener’s Garden Centre in Knockholt. A trained horticulturalist for over 20 years, he is always on hand to give you gardening advice. This month, he looks at what you should be buying now

A

pril is the real kick off for spring in the garden and is also a busy time of year here on our 4.5 acre nursery. This is a great month for planning your displays of bedding and patio plants for the coming season. Listening to our customers it appears that red, white and blue are going to be popular colour choices in this Olympic and Jubilee year. However, for those gardeners looking for something a bit different, a new Calibrachoa called ‘Rose Star’ looks certain to cause a stir this season. This small flowered trailing petunia relative has a pink star on the petals with a pale pink background; an excellent new variety that will be great in pots and hanging baskets. If you prefer larger flowered petunias then ‘Rosy Ripple’ is a new double-flowered trailing variety. This has cerise pink and cream blooms in abundance. We will be stocking a range of Osteospermums called ‘Serenity Mix’ with attractive names like ‘lemonade’, ‘lavender bliss’, ‘peach magic’ and ‘pink magic’. A cracking new foliage begonia called ‘Gryphon’ is also launched this year. This plant has large dark purple leaves heavily veined with silver. It does well in shade and associates well with white New Guinea Impatiens.

OUR TOP TIPS FOR SUCCESS Buy good plants: you can only buy Coolings’ home-grown plants from us Use good compost: we recommend choosing our Coolings Professional Compost, which we use ourselves Feed your plants: for bigger, happier more flowery patio plants feed with Miracle-Gro Location, location, location: pick plants that will naturally thrive in your chosen spot: Shady Characters Great choices for adding cheer to a dull aspect: Fuchsias, Begonias, Coleus, Nicotiana Sun Lovers Plenty of choices for a sunny spot! Osteospermum, Geraniums, Regal Pelargoniums, Arctotis and Gazania, Verbena, Petunias, Surfinia and Million Bells, Euphorbia ‘Diamond Frost’, Dichondra ‘Silver falls’, Portulaca and Mesembryanthemum

Remember, frost can still occur during April so I recommend protection for tender bedding plants until May

PLANT ARRANGEMENTS Here at Coolings we use all our fantastic home-grown bedding in our planted arrangements. Containers and pots are great for adding a splash of colour to patios or doorsteps. Remember you can be as creative with the container as you are with the plants. We like to use our vintage crates or baskets to give a real retro feel. Or for a more modern feel why not choose granite or slate? Quite often we use a shrub in our larger planted Mark, or another member of Coolings’ trained team, is on hand at the centre seven days a week. If you need advice just call 01959 532269, send an email to rushmorehill@coolings. co.uk or visit Coolings, The Gardener’s Garden Centre, Rushmore Hill, Knockholt, TN14 7NN

arrangements. They are great for adding additional texture and height to displays. Just remember to pick plants that won’t outgrow your container too quickly! A slow-growing conifer or grass can provide interest even after the bedding has finished. Coolings’ staff are always happy to offer advice. Why not pop up and visit our new plant advice centre due to open soon! Remember we are a retail nursery and we grow our own plants, we grow it so we know it!

Wealden Country Landcraft offers the complete package when it comes to creating your dream garden – Vine speaks to duo Adam Sutton and Tim Playfoot about everything from the design process to tips for your own garden

The brains behind Wealden Country Landcraft are Adam Sutton and Tim Playfoot. Adam, who has a BSc in Environmental Science, deals more with the maintenance while Tim, who has BA degree in Garden Design, applies the artistry. Together, they created Wealden Country Landcraft back in 1998 and ever since they have been offering their expertise. Their landscaping services range from planning your garden and implementing the design to complete garden maintenance or a simple contract to cut your grass and trim your hedges. Achieving the customer's dream garden is something that is precious to Wealden Country Landcraft. Tim says: “Of course it gives me pleasure to look at my completed work, but what makes me even happier is the look on the customer’s face after seeing their new garden for the first time.”

THE DESIGN PROCESS 1.

Initial Consultation – This involves a meeting with you in your garden to establish what kind of design is required. Tell Tim what you have in mind and he will start putting the wheels in motion to achieve your dream garden.

2.

Site Survey – A thorough survey will be carried out to establish the type of soil, drainage and existing vegetation. Your garden will then be measured and level readings will be taken.

BEFORE

AFTER

3. Sketch Designs – At this point you will get a first glimpse of how your garden could look as well as proposed materials and plants that will be used. 4.

Final Garden Design – After your feedback on the initial drawings, you will be presented with the final design. It is hand-drawn and can be coloured in if you wish to preserve the plan.

5. Planting Plans – A complete set of drawings will show exactly which plants will be used and where they will go.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PLANTS 1.

Recognise the soil type. It is a fundamental factor when deciding what you want to grow and where you want to grow it. Different soil types require different management.

2. Work out what seasonal interest you want from the plant. Think carefully about colour schemes – do you want autumnal shades or vibrant summer colours? 3.

Consider the aspect of your garden: is it north or south facing? If north then look for plants that don’t require full exposure to the sunlight. Remember, some plants thrive in the shade.

4.

Decide on whether you want your plants to be evergreen or deciduous; deciduous plants lose their leaves to reveal a stem structure. Evergreen plants have leaves in all seasons.

CASE STUDY

We were very impressed with the entire process from the design stage through to the planting. The trees and shrubs were of excellent quality and immediately made an impact in the garden. Highly recommended!

This particular garden was extremely bland with just a few old roses and wide hedges. The clients had a soft spot for traditional English country gardens and in particular they loved the gardens at Sissinghurst Castle. With this in mind the garden was divided into different sections by yew hedging and lots of beautiful white roses were mixed in with the shrubs and perennials. n For more information visit www.wealdencountrylandcraft.co.uk or call 01892 722699

Can you tell us a little bit about Henry VIII’s grandmother, Margaret Beaufort? She descended from a bastard line, she fell pregnant at 12, her husband died of the plague whilst she was pregnant and she was left to fend for herself. She plotted, schemed and quite possibly murdered to get her son, Henry VII, to the throne. She wielded great power after such a difficult start in life. Do you think she would have made a good queen? Yes, clearly. She had so many of the same characteristics as her great granddaughter, Queen Elizabeth I. She had that energy, that ruthlessness, that inquisitiveness and that drive. When she was in charge of the north of England she showed all the attributes of a ruler. What would she have thought of Henry VIII’s reign? I think she would have had terrible problems with it. Bishop Fisher, who was Margaret Beaufort’s closest friend, claimed that she was already having doubts about him. And of course she wouldn’t have been happy with what eventually happened. Fisher was Margaret’s confessor, her spiritual advisor and yet Henry executed him. Ruthless, energetic, conniving – it seems as though Margaret Beaufort had similar strengths to Anne Boleyn. Would they have been friends? Probably not. It’s the religion which is the great divide. Anne Boleyn is experimental in religion; she is interested in the new movements. Margaret as you can tell from her dress and everything else is a rigid catholic of the old school. She would have thought as Bishop Fisher and Thomas More did – they thought that Anne Boleyn was a heretic. She did not approve of heretics. By popular history Henry is known more for his wives, his weight and his tyranny – is this fair or are his achievements easily overlooked?

THE TUDORS, ROMANCE

&

‘bonkbusters’

Renowned historian David Starkey talks to Chris Bennett at the unveiling of a newly acquired portrait of Lady Margaret Beaufort at Hever Castle. They discuss the woman who should have been queen, the “rubbish” that was The Tudors TV series and Starkey reveals his more romantic side Interview Chris Bennett

Well that’s a very interesting point. Obviously his achievements were enormous. He was the king that reinvented England and he was the original eurosceptic. He separated England from continental Europe, he turned the Channel into the widest strip of water in the world and he turned England into a defensible island which it hadn’t been before. Henry set the monarchy and England on this completely radical course and this is the really interesting thing: the reason that he does it, all the important changes he makes, is for the soap opera. Talking of soap operas, dare I ask: what did you make of The Tudors television series? Well the real Tudor period makes Dallas look completely feeble...but it’s real! It’s so much better than theatre. If you think of the rubbish of The Tudors (the TV series), in reality it was so much more exciting and much more terrible. My criticism of it, and I’ve got no problem at all with people doing things for history – Shakespeare for example takes some profound liberties – but the argument is to what end do you take them and I think that The Tudors made the real Tudors less exciting. The reality is much more violent, turbulent and lustful than it was portrayed. It was just turned into a bonkbuster! If you could invite four guests to a dinner party (past or present) who would they be? What I think would be really interesting is to make it an allfemale party. I would want Margaret Beaufort, Queen Elizabeth I, Catherine the Great and Margaret Thatcher. These are all extraordinary women who deployed power. And then I would sit back and watch the catfight!

What makes you happiest? I’m not a great one for happiness. Not that I’m mildly unhappy, but I believe that achievement is something that makes me happy and I’ve had some really wonderful experiences. One recent moment has made me particularly happy. I was searching for months and months for the name of Henry VII’s confessor and then I finally found it. There I was in Chancery Lane, on a really miserable November Wednesday afternoon, and I was in a state of desperation searching through this pile of crumbling relics and there it was, I had finally found it: Hugh Denys – Groom of our Stool. Of all the people Henry’s confessor could have been – he most trusted the man who was in charge of the bog. What are you currently working on? I’m working on my second biography on Henry VIII. I’ve already written a book on the period before he became king (Virtuous Prince) and I’m going to throw over the last third of the book because I’ve discovered new findings. Some people cling to everything they have ever written but I don’t. If I come up with something new, if the facts change, then I change my mind. Hever is lovely – I’m a romantic and this is a romantic house. I either like the very grand or the very romantic. But I suppose one of my favourite places to visit is Haddon Hall in Derbyshire – it’s very romantic. I think it has the most beautiful room in England: the long gallery there. It has most of its original glass and there’s a stream flowing beside it. You get this beautiful light and the blissful sound of running water...it’s truly unbelievable. You can now see the painting of Lady Margaret Beaufort at Hever Castle as part of the castle’s permanent exhibition. Visit www.hevercastle.co.uk or call 01732 861709 for more information

Holly Seddon has the last word

sharp, distressing noise Like my friend who texts at sixcuts through the living something in the morning. “I’ll call in a room like an air raid bit when you’re awake”. Well a) now I siren. Our children’s am awake, so thanks for that and b) why eyes widen with panic as have you decided the time that I wake they watch their parents up? Sure, I know I could gently ask her frantically scramble and not to phone until after I’m home from descend into mayhem, the school run (and ideally not at all – yelling at each other. send a text!) but that wouldn’t be very “WHO THE HELL IS THAT?!” British now, would it. The British way to “IT MUST BE FOR YOU!” handle these things is to fester and then “IT WON’T BE FOR ME, IT’S moan behind that person’s back/in a NEVER FOR ME!” magazine column. “HOW CAN IT BE FOR ME? I It’s not much better at the weekend, NEVER GIVE THE NUMBER except this particular friend waits until OUT!” 9am – weekend rules.
