WELLNESS
Hello and welcome to the April edition of Vine. It’s amazing to think to think that this time last year we were enjoying a heatwave, having just faced the coldest March in over 50 years. It’s starting to feel a bit like this winter will never end, but here at Vine HQ we remain hopeful that spring will come. This month we take a close look at eccentric poet W H Davies (page 20) who is often overlooked in local history, despite his career starting in Sevenoaks. We also have our annual wedding feature (page 42), advising you on how to make your special day perfect. If you’re looking to renovate your kitchen, we have you covered with our showcase of the best local kitchen specialists (page 34) and our regular interior trends feature ties in to this nicely, highlighting ways to improve the style of your kitchen (page 36). With Earth Day coming up this month we’ve prepared a little guide for the ecologically minded with tips on how you can protect the planet and prevent climate change (page 54). West End star Richard Grieve, who will soon be performing at The Assembly Halls in Tunbridge Wells, popped by to discuss his career so far and his latest starring role in Priscilla, Queen of The Desert (page 14). We also have all the latest local news and our choice highlights of what’s on nearby, and our regular style guide, which this month tells you exactly how to pull off polka dots (page 22). Here’s hoping for a change in the weather soon and we hope you enjoy the issue!
22 VINE STYLE With 40s nostalgia all the rage, Vine shows you how to pull off that classic vintage polka dot style

Sevenoaks Leisure Centre improves disabled facilities Sevenoaks Leisure Centre has unveiled plans to improve its disabled facilities, as well as increasing accessibility to the building, strengthening its place in the community. So far the works have centred around the creation of a new changing room, including an electric hoist, a changing bench and height-adjustable sink. Funded by KCC’s The Good Day Programme, the facilities will soon be open to local residents and visitors with disabilities. The Leisure Centre has also refurbished its community room to better accommodate adults with learning difficulties. Councillor Graham Gibbens, KCC’s cabinet member for adult social care and public health, says: “I am delighted to see such a vibrant community resource as Sevenoaks Leisure Centre is ensuring its services are available to the whole community.” The programme took six months to complete and is part of an ongoing remit to ensure the Leisure Centre is able to serve the local community as inclusively as possible.
Spring Fling plant fair in Platt set to wow locals On Sunday April 14 from 11am to 5pm, the annual Spring Fling plant fair will be hosted in Platt, Kent showcasing specialist and multi-award-winning nurseries from across the south east. Over the years, the Great Comp Garden in Platt has gained a reputation among plant hunters and plantsmen alike as being Kent’s finest spring garden. Roderick and Joy Cameron moved to the 17th-century manor in 1957, with the dream of creating a beautiful, expansive garden.
The garden now boasts one of the best displays of magnolias, azaleas, dahlias and other exotic plants in the region. They have a couple of small specialist nurseries from Sevenoaks on site, who depend on plant fairs to keep going. They produce their specialist varieties in local soil so they tend to do well in Great Comp’s local gardens. Open to the public from 1 April daily, Great Comp Garden is a wonderful place to learn about plants while enjoying a cup of tea and some homemade cake in The Dairy Tearooms on site. n For more information visit: www.greatcompgarden.co.uk
Sevenoaks photographer featured in London exhibition Jamie Craggs, a photographer from the Bradbourne Lakes area of Sevenoaks, was featured in an exhibition last month. Titled Rainforest of the Sea it featured stunning photographs of sea creatures in Borneo, highlighting the diversity of coral reefs, as well as the threats facing one of the world’s richest habitats. Jamie says: "I hope Rainforest of the Sea will not only show visitors the beauty and wonder of the coral reef and its creatures, but also raise awareness of the importance of protecting them for the future." Craggs works without the use of digital photography, making the striking pictures he produces even more impressive. He is currently the Aquarium Curator at the Horniman, overseeing a collection of 2,500 live specimens from 150 aquatic species. He specialises in coral biology and is working with international organisations to conserve coral reefs and better understand the impact human life has on these fragile and globally important habitats.

Taste Of Kent award winners announced Dozens of the county’s leading food and drink producers, retailers and hospitality providers gathered at the Mercure Great Danes Hotel in Hollingbourne last month for the Taste of Kent Awards 2013. The evening’s food and drink heroes came from across the county – as Kent continues to confirm its place as one of the culinary hot spots in the British Isles. With ten companies awarded a Taste of Kent title for the first time, the 2013 awards have attracted a fresh generation of talent. Two of the categories which annually create some of the greatest public interest were won by newcomers, with The Ambrette in Margate picking up the Kent Restaurant of the Year and The George Inn, in Molash, winning Kent Dining Pub of the Year. James Beatton, a partner of Taste of Kent sponsors Vertex Law, stated that “the standard of entries was exceptional [and] the food sector in Kent is clearly still in good health and remains central to the local economy”.
The Bull draws attention The Bull Hotel in Wrotham is to exhibit the works of Victoria Andrews, a local artist of some renown who specialises in pencil portraits of children and animals on painted board. Victoria’s work will be on display at the Four AA Star hotel until the end of the year and to celebrate the exhibition the Bull Hotel is offering customers 10 per cent off a two-course meal. A voucher is available to download from Victoria’s website (www.originalsinpencil.co.uk) where a wide range of her work can also be viewed.
Home care experts join forces Tunbridge Wells-based home care providers, The Bespoke Care Company, and TerraBlu, are joining forces with other local companies to hold a free advice seminar on care options available to enable your loved ones to stay in their own home, from additional assistance once a day through to 24-hour live-in care. The evening will include advice on financial planning and concerns with funding care as well as local resources available to help your loved ones maintain community and social links. This free advice event will be held at the Hotel du Vin, Tunbridge Wells from 6.30pm on Tuesday 14 May. n For more information call 01892 518400
Attention for young Sennockian filmmakers Two media students from Tunbridge Wells Grammar School were shocked recently when their music video for Coldplay’s new song gained the attention of EMI, Coldplay’s record label. Henry Cramer-Todd and Joe Paul teamed up to create the video as part of Media Studies coursework, uploading it to YouTube as part of the course requirements. They sent the video to EMI to ask what they thought of it, and were amazed when they responded saying that they were very impressed. The pair then went to the London Premiere of Coldplay’s film where they met the director, Paul Dugdale. Henry said, “We asked him to have a look at our video and he’s basically been offering us work in the future. I’m excited for us; we didn’t really expect it at all. I think it’s brilliant that we have caused such a stir.”
Baby born on train
Lambs bring in spring
A woman gave birth to a baby girl on a train just outside of Borough Green on 8 March, on the Ashford train which passes through Sevenoaks. Luckily a midwife and a nurse were on board to help until the ambulance services arrived. Commuters cheered and clapped when baby Phoebe was born at around 7.40pm. Southeastern sent the new mother some flowers to say congratulations.
Romshed farm in Underriver has reported that their first lambs were born on 7 March, signifying the start of spring. The owner Fidelity Weston revealed that the first lambs born were triplets, estimating that 140 were born throughout March. She said, “We go into the fields five or six times a day to check everything’s all right so we do get to know the new arrivals quite well”.

Sevenoaks saved £1.5 million
Sevenoaks Tesco revamped
An arrangement between Dartford Council and Sevenoaks District Council has saved the latter £1.5 million in 10 years, meaning that Sevenoaks council has not needed to cut services as a result of government funding reductions. Cabinet Member for Finance Brian Ramsay said: “It is essential we protect frontline services in the face of cuts in government funding.”
An outdated Tesco in Sevenoaks town centre has been given a revamp. Previously it had been the only store left of its kind still using a design from 1978, but now it has been completely renovated and converted in to a brand new Tesco Metro. To celebrate the new makeover, Tesco has donated £1,000 to local charity The Hospice in the Weald.
Youths secure victory Young Sevenoaks swimmers performed admirably at the Antwis Trophy home gala, winning many key events. First places went to Cameron Davies (backstroke) and Caitlin McLoughlin (breaststroke). The ten-and-under girls also achieved first places for the medley events and The Sevenoaks’ Freestyle Squadron took first in the final race of the evening. A great night overall for these young swimmers.

The fourth book in The Science of Discworld series, The Science of Discworld IV: Judgement Day deals with all the big questions: religion vs science (or, rather, wizards); the nature of truth; and Armageddon, all of it tackled with Pratchett’s signature humour and wit. Every other chapter is written by mathematician Ian Stewart or biologist Jack Cohen and takes the form of a short and surprisingly accessible essay on the science of what is happening in the main story – meaning you get a crash course in science and philosophy as well as a Discworld novella. n The Science of the Discworld IV: Judgement Day is released on 11 April and is available to pre-order from www.amazon.co.uk now

the MP with Michael Fallon MP
The Chancellor delivered his Budget last month in tough economic times. There is no doubt that things haven’t been easy for Britain’s families or businesses since we came into office. But what remains the same after two and half years is that this Government’s dedication to tackling our country’s problems is unwavering. We have a three point plan. Firstly, dealing with our debts requires that we stop spending money we don’t have. This is difficult but we are doing this in a way that protects the things most important to us – such as the NHS and pensions. If we don’t get our debts down now we are simply shifting the burden to our children to pay and wasting billions on interest payments. Secondly, we need to help businesses, particular SMEs, create the new good jobs the people of this country want. This is what I’m working on in my
department: cutting tax rates to make British business competitive, slashing red tape, and making Britain the place companies want to invest in. Thirdly, we need to make it possible for those who aspire to work hard to do so. That’s why we capped welfare payments, took millions of people out of tax – the increase in the tax-free allowance this April is worth £450 to basic rate taxpayers – put families on the lowest energy tariffs and froze council tax bills. We want people to feel that the Government is on the side of those who aspire. There are no miracle cures or easy choices. It’s a long road, but we are on the right track and making progress. We must not turn back to the failed ideologies of the past now. n Have a question for the MP? Please send to editor@vinedigital.co.uk

It was totally by chance that Danny Miller came to be the Unit Manager for the Sevenoaks division of St John’s Ambulance. While working for them at Brands Hatch in 2008, he just happened to walk in to a meeting related to the failing division and walked out as its new head. At the time the Sevenoaks branch had only six members and wasn’t at many events; in the four and a half years since then Danny has helped them get to 50 members, and in 2012 alone they were at 170 events across the south east. Danny says: “it is the unit who are the heroes and we can always use new members.” He also wishes to thank all the people who have donated money to St John's, as without their help the organisation could not exist. 140,000 people die every year due to a lack of proper first aid training; joining St John's is totally free and can save lives. n In addition to being featured at many events across the south east, St John's has a regular meeting at their offices near Bat and Ball station every Wednesday between 7.30 and 10pm.
Readers’ Pets Pet name: Eric Owner: Kelly Knight Likes & DISLIKES: He loves waking me up on my days off at 6 (that’s the time I normally get up), he jumps on the bed and nips my nose! A word from the owner: Eric has small man syndrome. If he sees a big dog he stands on their back so he is taller!

Richard Grieve Actor Richard Grieve discusses playing a transexual in Priscilla Queen of the Desert: The Musical, coming to the Assembly Hall Theatre, Tunbridge Wells this May. How did you start out as an actor? I finished high school, then decided to go to the National Theatre Drama School in Sydney to study theatre. Then when I graduated I went in to the Sydney theatre circuit. So I’ve been doing it for about 24 years now, and you know... I’m still alive [he laughs].
16 vine April 2013 vinedigital.co.uk
Did anything in particular draw you to Priscilla Queen of the Dessert? Well it’s just such an iconic piece, as well as having an Australian connection. Obviously it was made famous by the film and when they discussed turning it into a musical I felt I had to be involved. Initially I was asked to play the role of Tick, with Jason Donovan playing Bernadette but when he left they asked if I would take on that role instead. How is playing Bernadette different to playing Tick? It’s completely different, providing a whole other angle on the story for me. Bernadette is a post-op transexual whereas the other characters are drag queens. This does provide some challenges in that I spend the whole production in high heels with a wig and corset [he laughs], which becomes quite a physical challenge; restricting your movements. Do you have a favourite moment in the musical? I don’t want to give too much away but I particularly enjoy performing the song ‘McArthur Park’.
“That it’s close to London but still has such a friendly atmosphere”
What would you like to do after Priscilla? I have been involved in musical theatre for quite some time, so I would like to explore more traditional theatre. Perhaps something classical by Noel Coward or even Shakespeare. Priscilla: Queen of the Desert is playing in the Assembly Hall Theatre, Tunbridge Wells from Monday 6 May to Saturday 11 May. FINANCIAL
MATTERS
Nigel Taylor of NJT Accountancy discusses the awareness of investing in property in the UK and abroad
M
any of our clients are looking to reinvest surplus funds into buy-to-let property here in the UK but before jumping into the unknown, you must at least do your homework! UK In the UK, buy-to-let mortgages are on the increase due to poor interest rates on savings; the return on bricks and mortar seem to be a far better prospect. Two revenue streams appear from this type of investment: in the short term, profits from any rental income less allowable costs, and further down the line capital gain on the sale of the investment. If you are a landlord then you must notify HMRC immediately, who will ask you to fill in SA105-Property Income Form, once your tax year is complete. This return will be filed together with your self assessment each year to assess how much tax you are due to pay. Apart from furnished holiday lettings, an individual’s income from property is treated as an investment income, rather than trading income. This means that different rules apply to the relief of losses, and individuals cannot treat the income as eligible for pension contributions. Allowable costs associated with your investment property are property repairs, maintenance, interest on your borrowings, legal and professional fees, insurance and other allowable property expenses such as property management fees. If your property is let as furnished then you can claim on an annual wear and tear allowance of 10% for gross rents received.
ABROAD Investing overseas has its own perils, but these can be avoided. Simply by purchasing a second home in Spain, you are liable to pay Imputed Property Tax on an annual basis, irrespective of if you are renting the property or not, which many Spanish holiday homeowners are unaware of. On an annual basis a Form 210 needs to be filed in Spain, although, if not completed nonresidents go for years without being detected. The problem arises when they come to sell their property. It comes as a surprise to many who sell their holiday homes that their return is adjusted accordingly due to tax arrears, fines and interest owed. In this case, the seller is obliged to pay 3% of the sale price to the tax office, which is only recoverable by the non-resident seller when they are up to date on taxes including capital gains tax on the sale and, increasingly, the Form 210 tax. This may then require multiple tax returns to be submitted. Income generated from the rental of their property will be taxed at source in Spain but can be reclaimed under the double taxation relief agreement between HMRC and La Agencia Tributaria (HMRC equivalent in Spain). By Nigel Taylor
LEGAL MATTERS The team at Warners Solicitors offer regular expert advice on topics relevant to our everyday lives. This month, Rayma Collins discusses Pre-Nuptial Agreements
A
Pre-Nuptial Agreement is a document signed by parties before they marry which sets out how a couple would wish to share their individual and jointly owned assets, should they subsequently separate. Most people who enter into these agreements do so simply to try and avoid the inevitable distress, uncertainty and expense which can arise in the event of separation. The Agreement enables the couple to determine their future, rather than leaving this to a Judge to decide, and reduces the prospect of lawyers being instructed to enter a costly battle at the expense of the family both emotionally and financially. Taking a very broad approach, if you answer yes to any of the following questions, it would certainly be sensible to at least obtain specialist legal advice about your circumstances: • Are you the wealthier party in the relationship? • Are you marrying later in life and consequently have savings, pensions or investments that you acquired sometime before you and your intended met? • Have you been married before and do you have assets arising from that separation which you
wish to protect in the event of separation? • Have you children from a previous relationship whose financial future you wish to secure? • Have you received, or might you receive, an interest in a Trust or inheritance that if you and your intended were to separate, you/your family would feel unhappy about sharing with them? • Do you own an interest in a business which you would be reticent to share with your spouse should you separate? To demonstrate our commitment at Warners to providing our clients with access to legal advice at excellent value for money, our family team currently offers a FREE initial consultation concerning Pre-Nuptial Agreements.

& Anna Savory explores the life of poet and vagabond W H Davies and looks at how Sevenoaks helped to launch his literary career
E
ven when allowing for the Dickensian connections of Rochester, or Canterbury’s associations with Geoffrey Chaucer, there are few towns in Kent that can boast a literary pedigree to rival that of Sevenoaks. From John Donne’s poetic preaching in St Nicholas’ Church to the Sackville West’s at Knole House the links that Sevenoaks has with some of history’s most renowned writers and poets are well established, and something that the town, quite rightly, prides itself upon. A quick glance over the last century, however, reveals a number of popularly overlooked figures for whom Sevenoaks was no less vital, or indeed inspirational, and one such figure is Edwardian poet, novelist and tramp W H Davies. Born in Wales in 1871, Davies cuts an unusual literary figure, and it is his life, as much as his poetry, that has garnered critical interest. George Bernard Shaw termed him one of the most singular and eccentric personalities in all of English literature and Davies’ life is littered with extraordinary and unlikely events. In 1893, longing for a poetic career but tired of his provincial life in Wales he set out for America where he began work as a ‘professional hobo’, drifting through the southern United States, begging and taking seasonal jobs. Though he ultimately intended to save enough money to return to England and establish himself as a writer, he more often than not ended up drinking his wages on “wild sprees” with his fellow tramps. While his experiences in the south furnished him with a range of exciting anecdotes (which he later collected in his first published novel The Autobiography of a Supertramp) it was an untenable style of living and, in 1895 (after lying in swamp in Memphis for three days, malarial and unable to

What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. No time to stand beneath the boughs And stare as long as sheep or cows. No time to see, when woods we pass, Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass. No time to see, in broad daylight, Streams full of stars, like skies at night. No time to turn at Beauty’s glance, And watch her feet, how they can dance. No time to wait till her mouth can Enrich that smile her eyes began. A poor life this is if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. (1905) The Vine, Sevenoaks
Come, Let Us Find Come, let us find a cottage, love, That’s green for half a mile around; To laugh at every grumbling bee, Whose sweetest blossom’s not yet found. Where many a bird shall sing for you, And in your garden build its nest: They’ll sing for you as though their eggs Were lying in your breast, My love-- Were lying warm in your soft breast. ‘Tis strange how men find time to hate, When life is all too short for love; But we, away from our own kind, A different life can live and prove. And early on a summer’s morn, As I go walking out with you, We’ll help the sun with our warm breath To clear away the dew, My love, To clear away the morning dew. (1905) Fawke Common

Mary Skinner, Head Chef Describe your typical day? Well, I start the day early tending for my horses before coming to in to the Emily Jackson House kitchens to create mouth-watering meals for our residents, their families and friends. I like to encourage the residents' families to share meals with them whenever possible, as I think it is really important. What is your favourite part of The job? Probably the cake making. I love to make really special cakes to celebrate significant occasions in the lives of residents and staff.
Christine Withers, Hotel Services Manager What does the role of Hotel Services Manager involve? Basically organising social events for residents, though I also greet people in reception, ensure all of our staff get paid and oversee the housekeeping team. What is your favourite thing about working for Emily Jackson House?
Andy Holland, Maintenance Engineer What does the job involve? Basically I ensure that the home is safe and sort out all problems, big or small, with the minimum of disruption; from touching up paint to bleeding radiators, all the little things that keep the place running. I also drive the Emily Jackson mini bus!
I love to help with organising functions, and we have had some brilliant days out and memorable occasions while I have been here; Tea at the Ritz, A Trip on the Orient Express, Quiz Nights, our annual Pantomime and Christmas Day visit to Santa. It’s a really exciting and varied role.
What is your favourite part of the job? Probably the people, I am always chatting with the residents about the latest football match or my plans for the garden and our lavish window boxes.

CAREGIVER FOR SPRING
Repeat from WK Dec p38 Terra Blu announce their best Caregiver every quarter; for spring they have chosen Rose Kerwin, a care worker in the Tunbridge Wells area
R
ose has been a carer for many years, first tending for her ill parents before deciding to enter caring in a professional capacity. Her job allows her to meet a wide variety of people, who often don’t get much human contact throughout the day. She feels that if she is able to make their lives easier and cheer them up, than she has done her job well! Caring is very clearly in her nature; in addition to her career she tends to her daughter who has cerebral palsy. She also adopted two children. When asked why she chose to help others, Rose
said: “if I can help someone I will, it’s just the kind of person I am.” In her spare time Rose likes to do DIY, describing herself as a very handson person. Terra Blu’s managing director, Richard Gould, has said that Rose is a “brilliant carer who does a wonderful job. She is loved by her clients and nothing is too much trouble for her. She is just a super member of staff ”. Rose believes that to be a carer
24 vine April 2013 vinedigital.co.uk
you have to be a cheerful, amiable individual who can brighten up someone’s day. She feels that a key part of the role is communication, as you have to be able to speak with authority and be understood by people who are hard of hearing. While the job can be hard at times, she believes that if you do your job well it isn’t a challenge. The Caregiver of the quarter was brought in six years ago as a way to acknowledge the best employees at Terra Blu. It is determined through
customer feedback as well as that of colleagues and managers, allowing the most caring individuals to be recognised. Richard Gould has said, “it is a very good scheme that really boosts morale, making employees feel valued”. The winner of the prize gets a certificate to state that they have been ‘Caregiver of the quarter’ and a cheque for £150.

ASK THE BETTER
BODY SHOP Answering your exercise dilemmas Q: I have heard that losing out on sleep could be slowing down my fat loss, is this true? Suzanne P, Sevenoaks
210,000 DOORMATS
www.vinedigital.co.uk/thealist
A: A good night’s sleep is a luxury few of us experience on a regular basis. Whether it’s your children, the family pet or work keeping you up, there is rarely an opportunity to achieve a deep, uninterrupted sleep. The result of this is that we miss out on one of the most important aspects of recovery, something that is further exacerbated if you are someone who trains frequently (which you all should be!). Sleep plays a vital role in achieving fat loss, with most people requiring as much as 8 hours per night. Having enough sleep and following a strict bedtime schedule every night will have a positive influence on hormone and neurotransmitter activity, which is responsible for fat storage and energy usage in the body. Sleep deprivation can have a direct effect on glucose metabolism. It increases our risk of insulin resistance, which can lead to a rise in fat storage and inflammation. By losing out on just a single hour of sleep per night your body will react to the stress by releasing the hormone cortisol in larger quantities. Elevated cortisol levels can be responsible for increasing an individual’s appetite and for enhancing fat storage, which I am sure none of you want! It is also responsible for muscle tissue breakdown (this lowers your ability to burn fat) and decreased immune function. A lack of sleep is also likely to have an impact on your cognitive ability at work. One study (DeVore, E. et al) found the following: • Women who slept five hours a day or less had lower average cognitive scores than women who slept seven hours per day • Women whose sleep duration changed by more than two
hours – up or down – had lower cognitive assessment scores than women whose daily sleep patterns did not change significantly Helpful tips • Establish a consistent sleep schedule and be strict with it. So if your favourite TV series is on at 10 – record it! If you do this for just one week you should begin to notice a difference. • Adopt an early bed, early rise sleeping pattern. Research has shown that by doing this you are more likely to have a positive effect on body composition and overall health. Try to avoid going to bed after 12, even if you have nothing planned for the next day. • Keep the room you sleep in as dark as possible. Sleep is dependent on a hormone called melatonin which is light sensitive. Even the smallest amount of light can disturb your sleep as it breaks down the melatonin. • If you can take a nap during the day, do so! • Turn off your computer/TV/ phone at least 30 minutes before you go to bed and replace it with reading a book. • Bear in mind that sleep is like a continuum; your body requires a consistent sleeping pattern on a daily basis. Having very little one day and then compensating for it by having more than normal the next does not give the same result. • Write down everything you have to do for the next day, allowing your mind to be freed up until the morning. • Train in the morning if suffering from a lack of sleep. n If you have any questions regarding this article, please feel free to email me at info@betterbodyshop.co.uk

Vine takes a look around the historic and beautiful Court Lodge in Westerham, a Grade II listed property that is now on the market
T
he history of Court Lodge in Westerham is one of the richest and most varied of any house in Kent. By turns home to monks, artists and noblemen, it is now back on the market. And in spite, or perhaps because, of its great age the lodge still feels every inch a home. Court Lodge has passed through many hands in its considerable history, and retains period features from almost every era. Though a hall has stood on the plot since before the Norman Conquest, the current Court Lodge was built during the ownership of the Abbots of Westminster in 1450, with any sound timbers from the original hall and monastery being incorporated, as was the style at the time. The prayer room (now a study) which stands off the drawing room is a beautiful reminder of the building's first purpose. Original Elizabethan linen fold panelling remains in the stairwell and a stunning inglenook fireplace from the reign of William and Mary is the centrepiece of a spacious lounge. Court Lodge also features the charming arts and craft details of Victorian architect and artist Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott who bought the house as a wedding gift for his daughter Enid. Small and distinctly Victorian aesthetic detail can be found throughout the house carved into pillars and beams, though Baillie Scott stopped short of complete renovation stating that “no architect, least of all himself, could hope to compete, nor want to compete, with the beauty of old buildings”. Unlike the majority of listed houses, however, Court Lodge has managed to retain this wealth of period detail and yet, simultaneously, keep a warm, bright and comfortable air. It is both historical and homely, imposing and intimate. This is in part due to its highly sensitive restoration which has allowed period details to sit alongside modern improvements that are still very much in keeping with the house’s character. Thus Court Lodge’s downstairs bathroom has been decorated with replica tiles from a 13th-century monastery as a functional nod to the house’s original use, and a section of the Bayeux Tapestry is tiled above the AGA as a reminder that once the entire Hundred of Westerham (on which Court Lodge stands) belonged to Harold the Second. It is these small touches that help to keep the character and history of the house alive while still keeping it, on some level, modern. Fully glazed throughout, with underfloor heating, surround sound television, and beautifully fitted contemporary bathrooms, Court Lodge needs no further work and is ready – in short – to welcome another occupant to its long list of historical luminaries. Court Lodge is on the market along with adjoining property Court House; originally one hall these properties can be reunited or can be bought separately. n For more information contact Jackson-Stops & Staff on 01732 740600

START YOUR OWN ALLOTMENT
I
f you don’t have much of a garden then renting an allotment is the way to go. A great place to start is the Sevenoaks Allotment Association, who offer a wide range of plots for reasonable prices. When picking an allotment the first thing you need to consider is its size. Think about what you want to grow and decide how much space you’ll need before you start looking. This should prevent you ending up paying for space you won’t use or even worse not have enough room to grow what you wish to. Next you need to consider how close it is to your home. Although it may be appealing to get a cheaper plot which is farther away, you want it to be close
enough that getting there isn’t a chore. You’ll need to check your crops regularly and if getting there is a trek than your allotment may get neglected. One of the most important things to consider is access to a water source. If water is not easy to get than you will need to bring your own each time. You also need to consider the quality of the soil and whether there are any weeds; these will require extra work. When you’ve chosen your plot and got a fair price, it’s a good idea to start planting as soon as you have cleared the plot of any weeds, to prevent further weeds from growing. Happy planting!

Ecological New Building for St Michael’s Prep School Vine catches up with St Michael’s Preparatory School in Otford to find out about their new, ecological Pre-Prep building and what makes them stand-out from the crowd as a school
1
OPEN MORNINGS Prep and Pre-Prep: Tuesday 21 May 9.00am -10.30am 01959 522137 www.stmichaels.kent.sch.uk
St Michael’s Prep school opened its new Pre-Prep last month after many years of planning what has to be the most eco and child-friendly school in Kent.
2 The new Pre-Prep provides an exciting and welcoming start to life at St Michael’s School. It is self-contained, secure and inviting, allowing children to have exceptional facilities indoors and safe, free access to the outdoors, with every classroom opening out onto either a decked balcony or into a garden.
3
The location, right next to woodland, means that children have fantastic opportunities to explore the natural environment.
Centred round an old copper beech the new building has been designed to blend in with the natural environment. The building features a green roof and larch cladding that makes it seem as though it has emerged from the landscape.
4
6
5
7
All classrooms have been equipped to the highest standards including the latest touch screen technologies adding to the excitement of pupils and teachers alike. The children have been able to watch the Pre-Prep ‘grow’ out of the ground from a safe viewing platform set up by the builders.
Golden values, which include kindness, gentleness, working hard and respect, underpin the development of a caring community that defines St Michael’s Prep School.
8
Music is an important part of school life with all children involved in performances across the year, as well as having opportunities to join choirs and ensembles.
9 Independence, collaborative problem solving and critical thinking are at the heart of learning. Technology is embedded into the curriculum with mini laptops and touch screen boards in use daily; there is an expectation that all children will become confident with these essential skills
10 A thematic, creative approach to the curriculum encourages children to explore their talents, whilst honing core skills in literacy and numeracy. This approach gives children a rich and varied experience that goes far beyond the National Curriculum.
11 The school provides an exceptionally wide range of extracurricular subjects.
n If you would like to enquire about admissions or to book a tour of the school, please contact Judith Yarnold, Director of Admissions on 01959 522137 or email jyarnold@stmichaels.kent.sch.uk. Alternatively visit the school website at www.stmichaels.kent.sch.uk
BEST OF
both worlds Rencraft are now a SieMatic partner which means they are now in a position to offer customers a more extensive choice of cutting-edge kitchens than ever before. Vine takes a closer look at what Rencraft now have to offer, as well as some of the innovative design solutions that make them a household name in Sevenoaks
Rencraft are now a SieMatic Partner Kitchen and furniture experts Rencraft are locally renowned for offering stunning handmade, bespoke solid wood in-frame-style kitchens; now they are teaming up with German kitchen manufacturers SieMatic in order to offer their customers a fuller spectrum of kitchens than ever.
Innovative Solutions This new emphasis on chic modernity, however, has in no way replaced Rencraft’s traditional, wood-based designs. Customers can still enjoy a full range of Rencraft’s signature solid wood pieces complete with the innovative space-saving solutions which give them the edge in a competitive market, from bespoke larder designs tailored to suit individual storage needs to ‘magic corner’ units to maximise wasted space. Rencraft can still ensure that your kitchen not only looks beautiful but is wonderfully functional as well.
Who are SieMatic? SieMatic are a German kitchen designing and manufacturing firm with over 80 years' experience and their focus on uber-chic, highly contemporary kitchens perfectly complement Rencraft’s more traditional style. Combining the finest quality materials with exceptional German engineering and cutting edge design, SieMatic’s kitchen ranges emphasise space, minimalism and modernity, from handle-less cupboards to space-saving solutions and clean, simple lines for a clutter-free and stream-lined finish.
An Unprecedented EXPERIENCE Neither a Rencraft nor a SieMatic kitchen is purchased ready made – one of Rencraft’s highly experienced designers will listen and talk through the customer’s requirements before designing a kitchen based solely on their needs and wishes so that the end product exactly fits with the customer’s lifestyle. Only then will it be manufactured exclusively for them. Rencraft’s involvement doesn’t stop there as they will liaise closely with builders and other on-site trades to ensure a smooth and efficient kitchen installation.
n The Rencraft showroom in Calverley Road, Tunbridge Wells now has four displays showcasing SieMatic alongside five beautiful Rencraft kitchens. Those interested in viewing the best in contemporary and traditional designs are welcome to visit, or can call 01892 520730. Designs can be viewed online at www.siematicbyrencraft.co.uk. You can also view Rencraft’s products at their spectacular showroom in Seal Chart, Sevenoaks or online at www.rencraft.co.uk. Call the Sevenoaks showroom on 01732 762682
KITCHEN INSPIRATION
An important part of designing your kitchen is the finishing touches, those little things which really tie the room together. Vine suggest a few nice little features which will give your kitchen a stylish look
SMALL YET TOUGH
BRIGHT TEAPOTS These teapots come in three different sizes (£15.99 for small, £21.99 for medium and £31.99 for large, The Hardware Centre, Sevenoaks) and a wide variety of colours, allowing you to work around the colour of your kitchen and your individual taste. The larger teapots would be great for an elegant tea party, while the small ones are better for everyday use.
LOVE CHAMPAGNE? This lovely silver, heart-shaped champagne flute set (£53, Knole House Furniture, Sevenoaks) would make a great addition to any kitchen, creating a look that’s both elegant and romantic.
VINTAGE BOTTLES The Hardware Centre in Sevenoaks stocks a great range of vintage bottles and we love these ‘Absolutely Milk’ ones (£5.99). They bring a vintage look to any kitchen and are incredibly versatile; the sealable top allows it to be used for all sorts.
36 vine April 2013 vinedigital.co.uk
These tiny spice pots (£6.99, The Hardware Centre, Sevenoaks) are a great addition to any kitchen, being both practical and reminding you of the good old days. Coming in a full range, you can get a pot for all your culinary needs.
STYLISH RACK A wine rack is an essential part of any wine lover’s kitchen, particularly if they throw a lot of parties. This unusual yet stylish piece (£299, Knole House Furniture, Sevenoaks) would look fantastic in any contemporary kitchen, becoming a real talking point.
COFFEE FIX These little espresso mugs (£8.99, The Hardware Centre, Sevenoaks) are great for lovers of strong coffee, being suitable for both espresso and babychinos (a small cappuccino). They may be small but they are just as strong as all Le Creuset products, being fully microwavable, dishwasher safe and damage resistant. Available in nine vibrant shades these mugs will inject some colour and fun into your kitchen.
To truly appreciate our furniture and service, come and see us.

IN THE KITCHEN Vine looks at J M Interiors, a bespoke kitchen company in Biddenden, and explores what makes their painted kitchen range, as well as their company as a whole, so special
Who Are J M Interiors? J M Interiors are painted kitchen experts, based in Biddenden, with over 30 years' experience in crafting beautiful, bespoke kitchens. An independent, family-run business with traditional values but innovative designs and tomorrow’s technology, J M Interiors pride themselves on their extensive knowledge of kitchen trends as well as their highly skilled craftsmanship. All kitchens they produce are bespoke, made to suit each individual customer and their individual lifestyle. With a strong emphasis on high quality materials, not only do their kitchens look beautiful, they are functional and built to last.
What makes them different? There are many qualities that make J M Interiors stand out from the crowd, but chief among them is their focus on quality, both in manufacture and design, along with the exceptional level of service they give to their clients. Key to this is attention to detail, from design expertise through to a comprehensive after-care service. To this end their showroom is complete with its own on-site manufacturing facility and paint shop allowing for complete flexibility when it comes to the finer details of bespoke kitchen manufacture. In addition their fitting team is not subcontracted, meaning that all aspects of the installation process are handled by J M Interiors themselves. Similarly, they are design experts. With a great knowledge of how to use space, the exact pros and cons of different materials and the benefits of certain products, they can ensure that each kitchen they make is tailored to exactly fit the individual customer.
The Painted Range While they offer a wide range of kitchen options from contemporary, finelined chic, to a more traditional, provincial feel, it is J M Interiors’ painted kitchen range that has proven enduringly popular, especially in light of the recent fashion for nostalgic interiors. A painted kitchen adds that touch of retro chic, as well giving smaller kitchens an airier and more spacious feel. With a huge range of colours to chose from a painted kitchen is also the perfect way to add a splash of individuality to your home.

colours
CHOOSING YOUR J M Interiors give some useful pointers on what to bear in mind when using colour in your kitchen
n Think about how much natural light your room has and how it might change through the course of the day. A lack of natural light is where the right colour choice can really enhance a room. n Be mindful of your property's period and be sympathetic to its architecture. Look if you can to enhance your home's features rather than overpower them with your colour choice. Too many colours can often have this effect. n Pick colours that you are naturally drawn to and feel comfortable with. There is no point in picking a palette that is out of sync with your usual colour choices (i.e. your clothes and the fabrics within your home). n A shaded white and cream colour is still number one with our clients, but many are injecting a bolder contrasting colour such as a strong blue or a grey-green. n For a more contemporary feel, cool mid-grey tones are a clean, sophisticated choice but with a slight underlying warmth. Contrasting with graphite greys is very on trend, and stronger greys can be accented with warm yellows for a really modern, graphic look.

bespoke kitchen
A
Vine takes a look at Sutherland Furniture, who aim to create your perfect kitchen from scratch
The founding principle of Sutherland Furniture is: ‘Listen to what the client wants, then do exactly as they’ve asked’
converted church in Weald is an unlikely location for a bespoke kitchen company. But from this secluded – some say secret – base, Douglas Sutherland and Alex Donmall design and build kitchens for their clients. Those in the know like to drop by for a chat, a fresh coffee and to see the kitchen studio. But this isn’t a company that asks you to choose from a range of pre-built kitchens. No, the samples are just there to feed your imagination because the founding principle of Sutherland Furniture is ‘Listen to what the client wants, then do exactly as they’ve asked’. This results in kitchens that are truly bespoke, designed from scratch to suit each client’s particular needs. Love wood, love granite, love innovation Although Douglas and Alex don’t wear traditional aprons and use rusty tools from yesteryear, they have a craftsman’s love of fine materials and a commitment to delivering an excellent product. They are happy to talk limestone and granite, but they love a length of Corian or a state of the art Aga. A kitchen from Sutherland Furniture might feature painted cupboards in subtle hues, or it could be a stripped down stainless steel sanctuary. And the hallmark of every kitchen? Bespoke, professional design.
Hand built kitchens from the Garden of England Sutherland Furniture has clients throughout the south of England, but Kent remains at the heart of the business with Douglas striving to ensure that where possible all of their products are sourced locally. And after 10 years of building kitchens, Douglas and Alex have a trusted network of tradesmen and are happy to give personal recommendations for building work or other home improvement projects. They are also official Aga dealers. Bespoke designs and an unusual hobby At Sutherland Furniture, Douglas and Alex have been lucky enough to be commissioned to do the kitchens in the former homes of Vita Sackville West, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Louis de Bernières. And 2013 will see the company taking commissions for bespoke bedroom furniture. And back at the church in Weald, clients who pop in might be surprised to find that two of the works in progress are not kitchen cabinets or smooth oak shelving. Because when there’s a lull, Douglas turns his hand to his other passion. Douglas is building a cedar strip Canadian canoe. The boat-building project helps soothe the stresses of running a business and the canoes are – of course – designed to perfection. n If you would like to see a Sutherland Furniture kitchen in situ, drop into the St Edward the Confessor Church in Weald. ou can save a lot of money by getting married at your local registry office; though this may sound dull many are actually very well furnished. Limit the number of guests to your close family and friends. Scale back the decorations to just a few nice flowers, from your own garden or a flower market to really save on costs. You can save money on dresses by getting the bride’s gown second hand and asking bridesmaids and best men to wear clothes they already own. You get decent rings for about £50 from high street jewellers. Instead of a lavish party make the reception a simple dinner at a nice restaurant.
H
oliday Inns and Old English Inns across the country do some great wedding packages for £999, Sunday to Thursday. These include a meal or buffet and a disco for around 50 guests, as well as a room for the couple. You get welcomed like a nobleman, without having to pay ridiculous prices. Keep decorations simple yet elegant. In terms of outfits, look on eBay for the dress. Although this sounds crazy, several companies in China will make a quality dress to order for around £100; you just have to make sure you’re not being ripped off on postage. You can rent tuxedos reasonably cheaply, for about £40 if you look around online. Don’t go too lavish on the rings, once again look in high street jewellers.
I
f money is no object than your wedding can be the most extravagant day of your life, and probably your guests' too. Get married in a stately manor for the most beautiful of surroundings. A Vera Wang wedding dress is a must, these can range from about £2,000 to over £12,000 depending on the style. They also make a fantastic selection of bridesmaid's dresses. Get your tuxedos tailor made. For a fairytale wedding have the bride arrive in an ornate horse and carriage. Alternatively use the finest limos. Tiffany’s make beautiful rings for about a grand which can be engraved with dates or initials. Ensure you get the finest catering for the reception and end with an elegant ball or more modern dance.
WEDDING SPECIAL
Special Touch
That
Wedding Favours
W
Vine looks at some innovative and beautiful ways to add a touch of individuality to your special day
hile chocolates and flowers make fantastic favours for your guests, they can be quite short-lived. By handing out plants, the memory of your day can live on in their home forever. Try to pick plants that aren’t too much of a hassle to maintain, ensuring that your guests will be able to tend to them. Go for cactuses or herbs over complicated orchids. Can be bought from your local garden centre.
Button Bouquets
I
f you want to stand out from the crowd and have something just that little bit different on your wedding day, consider a beautiful button bouquet. Most button bouquets are handmade using a combination of new and vintage buttons alongside brooches and bits of jewellery, making them a unique and colourful alternative to a traditional floral bouquet. The benefit of a button bouquet is that it doesn’t spoil in the same way as a conventional bouquet. This allows it to be kept as a decoration for the home which you can even hand down as a beautiful family heirloom for generations to come. Available from Etsy.com but you can also make your own from buttons and brooches that hold a special meaning to you.
Feather Button Holes
T
o give your guests an individual style on your special day, consider using feather button holes rather than flowers. These feather button holes are a great alternative to the traditional flowers, being much longer lasting, while also giving a more distinctive look and feel. There are so many different types of feathers you can choose from as well, allowing you to alternate for each guest. These are quite easy to make yourself and by looking online you can get even the most exotic of feathers.

IT’S ALL ABOUT Before
Vine takes a look at how Offset Architects reconfigured one house in The Weald, unlocking its potential and bringing new light and space to a formerly cramped interior
O
After Before
After
Before
ffset Architects have built a reputation on completing architectural renovations with great speed and great skill and their latest project in The Weald area is no exception. Originally an outdated property with a large floor plan but a cramped interior, the house has been transformed, the emphasis now being placed on openness, space and light, and the results speak for themselves. The property owners were absolutely delighted with the renovation stressing the ease with which Offset increased the interior space and eliminated the need for extensions simply by reconfiguring the interior. They took out oppressive non-load-bearing walls to create a lighter and more open plan space and recladded their conservatory so that it became, in effect, an additional room. They were also keen to emphasise the guidance they received from Offset throughout the process and the deep trust that developed between them and how closely Offset liaised with builder, Design Realised, who were instrumental in bringing the plans to fruition.

the cinema experience
IN YOUR HOME
Vine explores how the local, award-winning installation experts at New Wave AV can replicate the full cinematic experience in your home
N
ew Wave AV can create a complete home cinema room, fusing projectors, sound systems, lighting and Control4 technology, regardless of the size of your home. New Wave aims to create an amazing bespoke home-cinema room for your family and friends to relax in and enjoy. With their 2D/3D projector you can create a true homecinema experience, with remarkable high-definition picture quality allowing for projection on to large screens of up to 4 metres (while remaining totally whisper quiet). They also offer a motorised projection screen that is concealed in the ceiling until needed. For a smaller room they also offer a full range of HD and 3D plasma TVs, offering great picture quality while taking up less space. All wires are kept discreet, you only see what you want to see: the film. This wide range of projection screen displays are combined with the ultimate in sound system technology, mimicking the full surround sound effect of a professional cinema. Artcoustic speaker systems are modern looking and slim, with the added bonus that they also can be hidden from view behind artwork of your choosing without disrupting the audio quality. For full concealment New Wave also offer Anima speakers which can be hidden behind panelling or even plastered into walls.
New Wave AV consider the finishing touches to be of equal importance to the main installation. LED or Fibre optic lighting can be be incorporated in to the room, looking beautiful and in no way detracting from the main feature – the film itself. These can be combined with electric reclining home-cinema seating, which are both stylish and functional, allowing you to relax. With the Control4 system you can solve the issue of remote control clutter; with the touch of a single button you can gracefully dim the lights to create the perfect atmosphere, set the volume at a comfortable level and control the video. You can even close the electric blinds or curtains and manage the heating to create a comfortable environment, allowing you to sit back and fully immerse yourself in the film experience.
With their 2D/3D projector you can create a true homecinema experience, with remarkable high-definition picture quality

PROTECTING THE PLANET
E
With Earth Day on April 22, Vine explores how you can prevent climate change
arth Day is an annual event, raising awareness of climate change and encouraging people to think a little greener. This year you can do a few simple things to help the planet, starting at home. One of the easiest things you can do is recycle as much as possible. All you need to
do is ensure that all recyclable products are going in the recycle bin. To make this less of a chore, place a second bin in the kitchen that is dedicated to recyclables. On average about 60% of the rubbish that ends up in the dustbin could have been recycled. Signage saying what can be recycled, which you can print out online, will help your family know what goes in which bin. You can reuse shopping bags, so that less are thrown away. If a plastic bag is broken beyond repair, many supermarkets have facilities to recycle
them in store. Alternatively you can buy the much stronger and long lasting ‘bags for life’ that most supermarkets provide for about 10p. At work you can also encourage responsible e-waste recycling, as opposed to throwing used electronics in to landfills. To reduce carbon emissions you can encourage car pooling, and walk or cycle short distances. In addition to items such as paper and cans which are largely recycled, there are places which recycle specific items. A scheme started by GlaxoSmithKline allows you to recycle your old inhalers at your local pharmacy. Landfill disposal of inhalers is harmful to the environment both in material waste and in greenhouse gas emissions should the gas canisters become pierced or crushed and the propellant released. Many of the old inhalers can be made in to new ones, any left
over gas is harnessed and used for fuel. If you want to get rid of your outdated video tapes, you can either send them to the ReCycling people or donate them to charity shops. Companies like Music Magpie do similar things for CDs and DVDs and will even give you money for them. Envirophone will take your old phone, also paying you, and safely recycle the phone if they can’t sell it on. These are just a few ways you can help to protect the planet and Earth Day is a great time to think green. n For more information visit www.recyclenow.com

With our weather increasingly unpredictable, you may need to act quickly to restore your home in the event of flooding.
Severe subsidence caused by flood damage
Having problems with your insurance company? ARD Local can help. We deal directly with public loss adjusters and your insurance company, so that you don’t have to. If you are not sure whether the damage to your home is covered, we will work with AMPM public loss adjusters to resolve your situation and save you thousands of pounds.
ARD in action When a public utility attempted to install a water meter in Nursery Place, Chipstead, they found that all the drains had collapsed underneath the house. Subsidence had occured all around the house which had caused it to drop by several feet. This resulted in pipes pulling away from their rightful place. While more than one public utility took surveys of the drains, no one would take responsibility for the extensive damage and inconvenience (two out of the three toilets could not be used for weeks). Part of the kitchen ceiling collapsed due to water damage and the brickwork outside was no longer level or safe.
Side of house due to flooding Work in progress
Before
TESTIMONIALS Frustrated, the owner of the property sent ARD a copy of her insurance and within days a claim was started with the help of AMPM. ARD diagnosed the damage and set to work quickly to reinstate the drains and grounds, all paid for by the insurance company. Sabina, owner of property on Nursery Place, Chipstead: “We chose ARD based on work that we’d seen them undertake further up the road. They worked to the same high standard on my property and I have instructed them to do further works and maintenance here as I trust them to do a great job.” Amanda, tenant of the property: “I had to live with some extensive work going on inside and outside the house, but it was conducted with the minimum amount of fuss and mess. The ARD team were always polite, professional and hard working.”
