SEC IEW V R E INT

Your monthly round-up of comments, views and interviews with figureheads and the public

View from Westminster with Michael Fallon MP Parliament rises on July 19 for the summer recess: we return on September 5, almost seven weeks later. I’m often asked, quite reasonably: “How can you justify such a long break?” Parliamentary seasons are rooted in history, just like school terms. Until World War I, Parliament rarely sat in the autumn at all. The House of Commons began sitting in late January or February and sat until early August. The aristocrats came up for the ‘Season’ – opera, plays, Derby, Parliament, etc; then they shut up their London town houses and returned to the country. These days we resume in September for two weeks, breaking again for the three week conference season. These September sittings were introduced in return for the House not sitting late on Thursday nights in order to make life easier for northern and Scottish MPs. But an MP’s work goes on whether Parliament is sitting or not. Letters and emails still pour into my Commons

office; every day we take up new cases with the Whitehall departments. I go on holding advice surgeries in Sevenoaks and Swanley. The only difference is that I am not in London voting late at night. In fact, the recesses are an opportunity. I can get round the constituency, and spend more time with businesses or local groups that I would otherwise only have a brief half hour with on a Friday. There’s more time to follow up issues and do some deeper research, away from the daily rota of committee meetings and votes. There’s always a balance to be struck between constituency and Westminster. Often I’m asked to speak at a local event on, say a Tuesday or Wednesday, which is usually impossible when the House is sitting. That’s the kind of invitation I can accept in a Parliamentary recess. But it doesn’t stop the criticism. Parliament does have long breaks. They’re just not long holidays.

Every month we interview a notable member of your community

Kit Hesketh-Harvey

Performer, singer, comedian, composer and director Kit Hesketh-Harvey, panellist of Radio 4’s Just a Minute, has translated and updated Offenbach’s La Belle Hélène into the hilarious Troy Boy for the Merry Opera Company, which will be coming to The Stag on September 24 What made you choose Chislehurst as the setting for Act One? It’s the sort of place that fulfils a certain type of person’s every expectation. Is there a Greek taverna you had in mind for the meeting of Helen and the dishy waiter? The taverna was based on the fine neo-Grecian exterior of the B&Q on the Warwick Road in West London. What are you working on at the moment? I’m working on La Traviata, which will be Merry Opera’s next offering, for the 2012 season and the Olympics. What makes you happy? Canterbury Cathedral, where I went as a chorister to prep school and where I was later married. What is your favourite memory? Surfing with Meatloaf at Crane Beach on the (lessfashionable-but-nicer) East Coast of Barbados. What annoys you? People who, when there’s a run at the petrol pumps, don’t move their cars out of the way after they’ve filled up, and then spend hours buying lottery tickets at the cash desk while other motorists’ days are ruined. What is your most treasured possession? A World War I album containing messages to my teenage grandmother from the wounded officers she was tending when her family house was requisitioned, which finishes on the last page with a (rather good) love sonnet to her from my grandfather. Do you have a favourite place in Kent? Fordham, outside Tunbridge Wells, where I used to bunk off from Tonbridge School on hot summer days to go swimming in the river that flows through water meadows. How do you relax? I can’t. What is your life motto? It’s also the saddest. Si jeunesse savait, si vieillesse pouvait... n For information visit www.merryopera.com

SHOP FRONT

Vine takes a trip down memory lane to reveal the history behind the shop fronts of Sevenoaks High Street

Pronto Bagels: the hole story The building that now houses Pronto Bagels has had an association with food for over 75 years and dates back several hundred. The shop 24a was split from 24 in the 1930s and was occupied by a confectioner; later the Lollipoppe Shop sold the same products from 1939. During the war, Cyril Brown baked his bread and cakes in an outbuilding of Holmesdale Brewery off Brewery Lane (the building is in Pronto’s backyard) and sold his wares from No. 24a from 1941 to beyond 1962. Martin Cozens has continued where Cyril left off, using only traditional, freshly-baked bread; he travels twice a week to Brick Lane to get his fresh ciabattas and “proper” bagels. “They still use the traditional Jewish baking methods: the dough is rolled into a twist, soaked in hot water to stop it rising further which gives it the crunch on the outside and sweet taste inside; these are real bagels, unlike your ones in the supermarkets.” Martin’s thriving business is not only due to his delicious homemade sandwiches, salads, paninis and bagels, but his lunchtime offerings won’t break the bank with prices from 50p to £2.20. Due to the fact there’s always a queue out the door, Martin has stopped deliveries to concentrate on the shop, meaning he can keep up with the demand! Martin Cozens

Toni & Guy: tons of history The hair salon Toni & Guy resides in the majestic Market House. The building dates from 1843: it replaced an earlier Tudor one which would have been completely open for market traders’ stalls. In its earlier incarnation, it also housed a corn exchange on the upper floor and functioned as a court: it was the setting for the trial of supporters of the rebel Sir Thomas Wyatt in 1554. For 13 years now, the beautiful arcaded building with a detailed frieze has offset the modern, stylish interior of Toni & Guy. The decor is simple and elegant with clean lines and white walls while light floods in through the surrounding round-headed windows. The salon is incredibly friendly and remains innovative and on-trend. Visit this beautiful building, whether you want a cut and blowdry, straightening or colouring: they have two L’Oréal colour specialist degreeholders and also The Market House offer the popular Brazilian blow-dry, great for defrizzing your hair. To keep the interior fresh, they are planning a complete refurbishment in the next six months, while remaining sympathetic to the Grade II-listed building. n For more information call 01732 740092 or visit www. toniandguy.com

Williamsons Butchers: steeped in history

Loch Fyne’s fish counter

Walking into Williamsons Butchers you immediately notice two things: the brilliant selection of local meat, cheese and poultry and the traditional features that hint at its fascinating history. The low ceilings, beams, chimney and fireplace are original features which date back to the 17th century. Incredibly steep staircases link the cellar with the shop and the living quarters above. In the window hangs a sturdy black axe, found in the basement, which evokes a different era of butchery. Gary Williamson, the seventh-generation butcher in his family, has a wonderfully evocative photo of London Road depicting the shop fronts from over a century ago. He sells fresh, local produce from this atmospheric shop and is an expert in his field, running classes at Billingsgate in London. Whether Gary is recommending a wonderful cut of meat or discussing the original historical features, you will leave well-informed and with some delicious meat perfect for a summer barbecue or Sunday roast.

Loch Fyne: the plaice to eat Appropriately hung with 19th-century fish-scale tiles, Loch Fyne Restaurant serves a delicious range of fish and seafood, as well as tempting vegetarian and meat dishes. Built in the 15th century, the Grade II-listed building was originally the residence of the agent of the Archbishop of Canterbury. It later became a saddlery and leather goods merchant. Inside, the period features have been carefully preserved. Look out for the beams and the Tudor fireplace which dates back to 1414: it is carved with the coats of arms of Archbishops Chichele and Warham. The company has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a shack by Loch Fyne in Scotland, but oysters, mussels and langoustines still come from the loch. Whether you fancy a traditional fish pie, an indulgent half-lobster or mouth-watering Moules Marinières, Loch Fyne is perfect for a relaxed lunch or special occasion. n For more information call 01732 467140

Knole House Furnishers: a hidden past Located in the unusual setting of the Old Town Jail, Knole House Furnishers is an independent family-run business with 75 years of experience. The original cells, dating from around 1685, are still intact in the basement. Director Adrian Pounce is clearing them out, so the brave may soon be able to pay them a visit! Exposed beams and antique fireplaces make for a historic showroom. Cosy arm chairs, magnificent Knole sofas, dining tables in solid English oak and decorative mirrors are all under one roof. With their motto of ‘any height, any width, any depth, any colour’, Adrian and his team pride themselves on their personal service. Many pieces can be tailor-made to suit your requirements or modified to fit into that tricky corner. Don’t miss this month’s sale, and look out for a new collection of gifts and accessories coming soon.

Demelza: future fundraising boutique

This autumn, Demelza Hospice Care is looking to bring a new shop to Sevenoaks. The ‘boutique’ store will be stylish, upmarket and edgy and will stock designer clothing, gifts, antiques and collectibles. Top-quality donations will be incorporated into the exclusive Demelza collection. Demelza supports over 700 families across the south-east, providing an invaluable service that offers help for children and relatives whenever they need it. These hospices look after young people who are not expected to reach adulthood. The care Demelza provides is astounding, including respite, home-visits, wonderful days out and open-ended bereavement services and support. This contemporary space will provide an excellent opportunity to raise awareness for Demelza. Sevenoaks has an active friends group who organise events and fundraise for Demelza but more volunteers are always required. Look out for this new store coming to Sevenoaks: the money raised goes to an extremely good cause. n If you think you can help, please contact Demelza Voluntary Services on 01795 845283 or email jane.page@demelza.org.uk

The Compact Disc: independent celebration Stepping through the door of The Compact Disc, the only independent music shop in Sevenoaks, you enter a treasure-trove for music and film lovers. While the number of independent music stores has declined dramatically over the last decade, Martin Salisbury has run The Compact Disc for 25 years now and it shines as a brilliant example of a unique shop that has withstood the test of time. Martin and colleague Phill Drown’s knowledge of customers’ tastes and his passion for music of all genres means he quickly picks up on new artists. Right now he recommends two wonderful female singers, Caro Emerald and April Smith. The Compact Disc also has a wide selection of films for sale, from classics to comedy, and Martin will go out of his way to find any obscure film, no matter how little you know about it. He is usually able to source films within a few days. This long-established, friendly and personal shop has been a vital part of the High Street for so long: it is really worth supporting. n For more information call 01732 740889

INTERVIEW How have readers responded to your book? I keep getting amazing responses from audiences and readers, which has been very touching. People laugh a lot and they also get quite moved. They write me letters; they come to book signings and tell me their own stories about their families. I have learned a lot about people’s lives. Was your first journey to Nigeria to meet your father a watershed moment in your life? There is a before and after, you are right. Before you go, it is imaginary, and then when you go, your imagination turns into the road that is under your feet. That was quite fascinating. Now I feel I can go to Nigeria as many times as I want and I have my own connections that are not necessarily to do with my father. Did this collision with Nigerian reality make it harder for you to use your poetic imagination? I find the tension between the imagination and the reality very inspiring. I often like writing close to the border between these two things. I don’t find the reality of being in Nigeria takes away from the poetry because it’s all still so fresh and new. How did you handle the really difficult moments? My second trip, when my father refused to see me, was really quite tough but it was offset by meeting my brother, which was wonderful. He was welcoming and warm where my father hadn’t been. I feel I have gained a lot more than I have lost. I think human beings are defined by what they have lost, but you can actually turn that around and define yourself by what you have gained. Another writer might have turned this story into a misery memoir I was really determined not to write a misery memoir because I think they can be indulgent; there are whole shelves now in bookshops dedicated to them. I would be very upset if I found my book on the misery shelves! I think if you write about difficult things with humour they get through to people much more. Humour gives people space to join in with their own stories as they are reading the book. I think the most difficult thing when you are writing a memoir is the tone – it’s not feeling sorry for yourself; not being bitter; not being rancorous; not writing out of a revenge motive.

nothing to lose Born in 1961 to a Nigerian father and a Scottish mother, Jackie Kay was adopted as a baby by a white Glaswegian couple who were Communist activists. Her new book Red Dust Road is a warm, funny and vivid memoir about the search for her birth parents. Meeting her father, a born-again Evangelical Christian who saw her as the embodiment of his sins, was a traumatic event but the book is the opposite of a misery memoir WORDS JOHN MORRISON

18 vine August 2011 vinedigital.co.uk

How far do you have to be tactful when writing about living people? I think you have to be truthful, first of all to yourself, and honourable as you can be. I wanted it not to be just my voice – I wanted to recreate the rhythms, syntax, speech patterns of both my parents and the people around me. The people who know my mum and dad say they feel they are in the room with them while reading the book. Your book strikes a chord with people of different backgrounds I think people can relate to the book whether they are Scottish or not. Most people have something in their family that is unsettled or undiscovered. I know very much that I have been made by the mum and dad that brought me up and, in a sense, finding my birth parents has only confirmed that for me. When I found my birth mother I discovered that she had had a life of mental illness and the giving up of a baby had really ruined her life. That makes me feel a kind of survivor’s guilt. Obviously it’s not my fault because I was a baby, but I still feel that I was lucky at her expense. So that’s quite tricky. Why do you enjoy book festivals? Because writing is such a solitary activity. Going to book festivals and meeting readers is the opposite. You do kind of live in a Jekyll and Hyde world when you are writing, you have to do both. I really enjoy getting ‘oot and aboot’ and hearing the audience react. Often there is an incredible generosity. They feel that you have exposed yourself to them, so they must be warm and expose themselves back. n Jackie Kay will be at the Sevenoaks Literary Celebration on September 29. Tickets are on sale at Sevenoaks Bookshop. Read more about the festival in our September issue

Make the most of summer with Vine’s Al Fresco guide to outdoor dining The vegetable patch

The George & Dragon: exceeds all expectations The George & Dragon in Chipstead offers the ultimate al fresco dining experience in its deliciously fragrant herb garden, where some of the ingredients for your meal come from just a few feet away

I

f Marks and Sparks made adverts for pubs’ outdoor space, they would say: “This isn’t just any pub garden; this is a George & Dragon in Chipstead pub garden.” And just like Marks’ ‘gastropub’ range, The George & Dragon’s garden far surpasses a piece of dry lawn, the odd bench and Fosters umbrella that unfortunately adorn so many public houses’ patios these days – they have made a proper effort with it. When you walk through the 16th-century building out into the garden you are instantly greeted by a waft of pleasant aromas from the herb garden; expect an explosion of rosemary, thyme, chives, bronze fennel, sage and mint to name a few, some of which might appear in your freshly made Mojito or this season’s marinated haunch of venison with a mint yoghurt dressing and summer salad, with chicory, rocket and lettuce Lollo Rossa, all from the garden of course. You can enjoy a table by the herbs and bay trees in the sunshine; relax in the dappled shade of the walnut tree to the rear of the garden, or take refuge under one of the pub’s various umbrellas. During the early evening, the sun falls directly between the fir tree and the chimney breast of a nearby house, leaving a single, almost heavenly, beam of light to fall on tables 61, 52 and 53: these are the tables to pick if you want to savour the last of the summer evenings. Due to the garden being set back from the road, which is rarely busy anyway, you will find the situation of the south-facing garden perfect, but also very peaceful. Once you’ve made yourself known to the staff, you can pick your spot and enjoy being waited on hand and foot – order a bottle of the lovely Sancerre rosé for a special occasion or simply a spritzer for something refreshing. You can have anything you desire off the menu, sitting outside makes no difference: their Hadlow College lamb rump marinated in lime pickle, offset by a refreshing cucumber

couscous, makes for the perfect al fresco treat, but their menu changes daily so there’s always something different to try. The garden produces an incredible variation of vegetables, including horseradishes, carrots, kale, spring beans, courgettes, potatoes and more, so you can guarantee the genuine locality of your dish – a few feet away most likely. However, you may not have the time or inclination for a leisurely or extravagant lunch, and you can equally enjoy your packet of Tyrrells or a bowl of chips with a Westerham Brewery ale or a Stowford Press cider. There’s also the classic pub favourites such as The George’s legendary steak sandwiches or a traditional ploughman’s for a hearty lunch. Children are well catered for in all of this: there’s a brilliant wooden adventure playground set in a grassy knoll, surrounded by espaliered apple trees with a very generous gated play area. There are also picnic benches for parents to keep a keen eye on their little ones or for children to enjoy their lunch in fun surroundings while parents take a wellearned break. There’s something for everyone at The George & Dragon, Chipstead, whether it’s a swift half in the sun or a gourmet three-course meal in genuine al fresco style. n www.georgeanddragon chipstead.com

The Carpenter’s Arms: countryside haven It may be only a stone’s throw away from the bustling town of Tonbridge, but The Carpenter’s Arms is set in beautiful countryside surroundings. The rose-entwined patio and dining area is ideal for a pub lunch and refreshing drink in the sunshine, or you can enjoy your meal in the relaxed setting The rose-entwined garden of the landscaped garden. If the weather remains resolutely British, the fantastic Sunday roast can be enjoyed in the warm, rustic interior of this typical English pub. The chefs go to great lengths to source local produce for their everchanging menu. Try the honey-roasted ham with eggs from Underriver, or the crumble made with apples from local orchards, which will satisfy those with a sweet tooth. The Carpenter’s Arms also offers nine luxurious ensuite rooms, with prices starting at £59 for a single and £80 for a standard double room.

A romantic setting for a delightful meal on the terrace

Haxted Mill: a Mediterranean haven

n Visit www.carpentersarms.net Dating back to 1850, Haxted Mill provides a timeless and picturesque setting for al fresco dining. In the midst of the Kent countryside near Edenbridge, the restaurant has an elegant ambience suitable for a light lunch or dinner. Relax on the candlelit terrace overlooking the millpond with a glass of perfectly chilled Burgundy Puligny Montrachet, or a very reasonably priced house wine at £15.95. Drawing on 26 years of experience, David and Linda Peek offer a taste of summer with their range of menus. A fixed-price menu offers the choice of three starters, three main courses and two desserts at £17.50 for two courses and £22.50 for three courses. Alternatively, the seasonal à la carte menu features fresh fish and seafood and local beef and lamb from Hever. Delicious dishes include a Carpaccio of beef with parmesan crisp; Cioppino, a fabulous fish casserole from San Francisco with crab, monkfish, squid, salmon clams and mussels, perfect for a summer supper; and the tempting Chocolate Nemesis. The restaurant is the perfect location for an intimate summer celebration and is available for private parties and weddings of up to 52 people. n Visit www.haxtedmill.co.uk or call 01732 862 914 to book

The Chaser Inn: stars in their eyes With a view of St Giles church on one side, and the vast expanse of Shipbourne green on the other, The Chaser Inn at Shipbourne is wellplaced for picturesque al fresco dining. Once the haunt of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, the pub boasts an attractive beer garden and a courtyard, allowing diners to enjoy their meal in the sunshine. Every dish on the extensive menu is homemade using local ingredients. For a light bite, the warm beef sirloin sandwich with horseradish mayonnaise is served on bread from Rusbridge Family Bakers in Southborough. Alternatively, try the grilled wild plaice from Eastbourne and take in the surroundings with a summery glass of Marqués de Carceres white Rioja. Although the pub takes bookings, there will always be some tables free, so drop in and experience the comfortable atmosphere of The Chaser Inn. n Visit www.thechaser.co.uk

Fir Tree House tea rooms: time for tea! Tables are dotted across the lawn surrounded by pale pink, old-fashioned roses in the charming cottage garden at the Fir Tree House tea rooms in Penshurst. There is nothing more enjoyable than sitting in the peaceful garden or inside the cosy tea rooms sampling homemade treats from beautiful Royal Copenhagen china. The front of the building dates back to Tudor times and it has been a tea room since the 1930s. Caroline, the owner, bakes wonderful fresh cakes and scones throughout the morning which are served straight to customers in the afternoon. These change daily, but a delicate white chocolate sponge with dark chocolate ganache topping is fantastic; the iced lemon cake is beautiful and their teabread is very moist and packed with fruit. You can sample a splendid choice of teas from Keemun China tea to Lapsang Souchong, sandwiches, cakes, scones and homemade jam in the friendly, welcoming and picturesque tea rooms and garden. id-century modern style is taking the design world by storm and if you don’t yet know your Eames from your Eileen Gray, it’s a period worth investigating as now is the time to invest. With the Festival of Britain celebrating its 60th anniversary this year and more vintage shops cropping up than you can shake a rosewood stick at, long gone are the days when teak was considered an unsightly piece of furniture your parents or grandparents owned. In fact, Danish teak furniture is ridiculously desirable. One savvy homeowner who has a passion for all things vintage is Amy Page, who lives with her partner and their

Boston Terrier ‘Batman’ in Hazeldine – a 19th-century cottage, surprisingly nestled in a winding country lane in the heart of south-east London. It may not sound like an obvious choice for clean lines and high ceilings, but it all works. The home is dotted with vintage finds sourced widely from antique shops to eBay. The original details of the cottage such as the stained glass windows, exposed brickwork and original tiles are offset by neutral wall colours and the use of natural timber. Old Hovis tins, glass lab beakers, green bottles, simple wooden chairs and vintage books make for delightful touches in the tiled kitchen and in the bedroom, clean panelled walls and crisp white linen

FEATURE juxtapose with the heavier yet stylish pieces such as a leather trunk, metal floor lamp and mid-century chest of drawers. Almost all the furniture is vintage, but it is carefully blended with contemporary pieces, naturally suiting the original period that inspired them. Amy also has a keen interest in original art, with striking work by Dan Baldwin, Static and Jake Wood-Evans – the pieces may be sparingly placed but are all the more alluring when you stumble across them. Old trolleys

(the wooden library trolley in the kitchen and the metal one in the bathroom), vintage cameras, an old school gym horse, metal lamps and retro clocks all add personal and witty touches which complete the look and ensure this is certainly a home and not a showroom. v n If you like Amy’s style, she has set up her own online vintage shop where you can find inspired pieces like these www.bringitonhome.co.uk

Heals is the destination for highquality modern and designer furniture. Available in cherry or oak, this fivedrawer chest provides enough space to keep even the biggest wardrobe tidy. It is finished off with subtle edge detail and recessed handles. £875, from www.heals.co.uk. For lighting which is both functional and eye-catching, photographic tripod floor legs and lampshades make a bold statement. Designed exclusively for Habitat by Alex Dreyer, this piece is inspired by bold studio lighting. Legs, £40 and lampshade, £50 from www.habitat.co.uk

For a clean, modern dining set that won’t date, John Lewis has capitalised on the demand for mid-century design by commissioning exclusive ercol pieces for the store, based on ercol’s original 1950s drawings. This ultra-stylish oak ‘Chiltern’ set should do the trick, from £179, www.johnlewis.com. With a nod to industrial design, this 1950s bookcase is made of oak with metal strips along the front. Set on wheels and with three shelves, it makes a versatile and stylish storage solution. £75, from www. bringitonhome. co.uk

Made.com is a godsend for those who love designer-quality furniture but can’t afford the scary price tag. They have investment pieces such as this Art Deco-inspired ‘Jazz Club’ two-seater sofa in Cognac, which is just stunning. They make it in China, so it’s a bit of a wait, but worth it – at only £399 (high street price £899) it’s a steal. To complete the look, this Orla Kiely coffee table takes inspiration from sturdy utility design. In solid walnut, it’s an investment piece sure to withstand the test of time. £555, from www.heals.co.uk

This set of three vintage science beakers makes for an unusual centrepiece when filled with flowers, or add tiny shells for an original decoration. £39.50 from www.notonthehigstreet.com Grab a slice of British history with these vintage Hovis tins. Previously used in a bakery, they still have a lot of life left in them and also make great planters. Small £26.50, large £36.50 from www. bringitonhome.co.uk These bottles make a quirky decoration – albeit one with a sinister edge. Dating back to the 19th century, they would have typically held poison. £69.50 from www.bringitonhome.co.uk Show your patriotic side with this vintage-inspired Union Jack cushion. £24 from Debenhams. www.debenhams. co.uk. For a more contemporary addition to your sofa, try this geometric feather-filled cushion from Dwell. £24.95 from www.dwell.co.uk Scour eBay for originals, or head to Globe-trotter.com for a luxury suitcase. This beautiful ivory model can be used to make a vintage decoration, or to store clothes and accessories. It also features wheels should you need to jet off to a glamorous destination. £870 from www.globetrotter.com

HOME & GARDEN

A PLANTSMAN’S PARADISE Great Comp Garden is in full bloom this month, making it the perfect time to visit this well-kept secret near St Mary’s Platt, says Katie Barron

T

his so-called ‘paradise’ gains its reputation due to its diverse collection of plants from all over the world; Great Comp is the work of the late Roderick and Joy Cameron who bought the 17th-century manor house in 1957. Extending to seven acres, the garden is now managed by a charitable trust, led by curator William Dyson, his staff and a small team of volunteers. At this time of year, Great Comp is alive with colour from an array of rare and exotic shrubs and perennials, especially dahlias and salvias. Unusually, many plants are grown in small niches

in the ‘ruins’ created by the Camerons, producing a microclimate for less hardy specimens. Aside from the beautiful plants and flowers, Great Comp is home to The Old Dairy Tearoom. Pop in for a coffee and a slice of homemade cake, a light lunch or traditional afternoon tea. The shop stocks a range of unusual gifts, including kitchenware and unique home and garden decorations. Great Comp’s ninth annual Garden Show is on August 13 and 14. Awardwinning nurseries from around the southeast will display their plants alongside gardenware and work from local artists. Admire the gardens at the height of

their summer colour, sip Pimm’s on the lawn and be entertained by local jazz ensemble Strings and Things. The vibrancy and atmosphere of Great Comp, as well as the extensive collection of plants, make it one of Kent’s best-kept secrets, whether you are a dedicated horticulturalist or not at all. The Garden and Nursery are open every day from April 1 to October 31, 11am to 5pm. Last admission 4pm. Tickets: adults £5.50, concessions £5 and children £1. n Visit www. greatcompgarden.co.uk

FASHION

TIMELESSFASHION Hailed as Britain’s answer to Mad Men, BBC2’s new drama The Hour is set behind the scenes of a topical television news programme in 1956. Embrace your inner journalist, grab a vintage piece or two and take a trip back to post-war Britain with our guide to The Hour-inspired fashion Romola Garai plays Bel Rowley, producer of The Hour. Based on pioneering BBC journalist Grace Wyndham Goldie, Bel faces the daunting challenge of launching the new investigative television programme in a man’s world. Confident and ambitious, her look features cinched-in waists, antique brooches, body-con dresses and dainty heels.

As a talented and outspoken journalist, the search for the truth is much more important to Freddie Lyon (Ben Whishaw) than what he wears. Knitted cardigans and clashing ties are thrown together for a rebellious, eccentric style. In contrast is Hector Madden (Dominic West), the presenter of The Hour. Less daring, he sticks to the traditional uniform of sharp suits and brogues.

with Jackie Reader

A DIABETES EPIDEMIC There are currently around 2.3 million people with diabetes in the UK. However, it’s estimated that more than half a million people have the condition but are unaware of it The last 30 years have seen a threefold increase in the number of cases of childhood diabetes. This is especially worrying considering many are children and teenagers with Type 2 diabetes, usually only seen in older people, which reflects obesity levels in young people. Not only is Type 2 diabetes completely preventable, it is usually reversible if you are willing to make some simple, inexpensive lifestyle adjustments to restore your insulin and leptin sensitivity. SYMPTOMS OF TYPE 2 DIABETES INCLUDE:

• Excessive thirst • Extreme hunger (even after eating) • Nausea and possible vomiting • Unusual weight gain or loss • Increased fatigue • Irritability • Blurred vision • Slow healing of wounds • Frequent infections (skin, urinary, vaginal) • Numbness or tingling in hands and/or feet In addition to diabetes, elevated insulin levels are associated with a number of diseases, including:

• Heart disease • Peripheral vascular disease • Stroke • High blood pressure • Cancer • Obesity

IS LEPTIN THE MISSING LINK BETWEEN OBESITY AND DIABETES? Leptin is a

hormone produced in your fat cells. One of leptin’s primary roles is regulating your appetite and body weight. It tells your

brain when to eat, how much to eat and, most importantly, when to stop eating. Leptin is largely responsible for the accuracy of insulin signaling and whether or not you become insulin resistant. It is believed that the only known way to re-establish proper leptin (and insulin) signaling is through proper diet. To prevent or reverse diabetes, here are just a few things you can do to help reduce your risks: EXERCISE An absolutely

essential factor and one of the fastest and most powerful ways to lower your insulin and leptin resistance.

indicating that optimising vitamin D levels not only helps with Type 2 diabetes but may also eliminate your children’s risk of exposure to Type 1 diabetes if you are pregnant. PROBIOTICS Your gut is a

living ecosystem, full of both good bacteria and bad. Multiple studies have shown that obese people have different intestinal bacteria than lean people. The more good bacteria you have, the stronger your immune system will be and the better your body will function overall. Fortunately, optimising your gut flora is relatively easy. You can reseed your body with good bacteria by eating fermented foods like kefir, Sauerkraut, live yogurt and miso, or by taking a high probiotic supplement.

What a splendid magazine Vine is: the favourite magazine of Sevenoaks. I had a letter from a lady living on Norfolk Island in the South Pacific to say she had noticed my request in their newspaper for information about a female pilot from WWII. She could not give me any more information, but she noticed my address was Sevenoaks, Kent. Her name was Diana Forsyth, but her maiden name was Miss Diana Sevenoaks. She was a descendant of William ‘Sennock’ Sevenoaks, the

abandoned orphan who founded Sevenoaks School and gave his name to the town. Diana had visited Sevenoaks with her now late husband in 1988 and they were made welcome at Sevenoaks School. What an interesting story behind the name of Sevenoaks. Just by chance of my inquiring about a lady pilot of WWII, a remarkable story unfolds.

▼ In the summer time: A beautiful summer painting by local artist John Lucas NAMES: O’Bajan Aida, known as Aida (pronounced Oida) and her foal, Hippolyta, known as Polly OWNER: Judith Yarnold A WORD FROM THE OWNER: “Five years ago, and over a few bottles of wine, a vet and an accountant from Norfolk decided it would be a good idea to take a few months off work to go to the National Stud in Hungary, buy a couple of horses and hack them home. Aida was purchased and then ridden over 1,000 miles back to the U.K. Since I have owned her, Aida has been used – unsurprisingly – for endurance riding. Polly has been bred with endurance in mind. When she was born, the moon was bright and there was classical music playing. As it was midsummer, I thought

about the characters in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The name Hippolyta seemed particularly appropriate: the warrior queen of the Amazons, possessing great stamina, strength and power to resist injuries – perfect for a foal destined for a future in endurance riding! Aida loves food, especially carrots! Polly’s teeth are just coming through and she is starting to enjoy a special mix for mares and foals which looks like muesli. She is also just learning to eat grass. She tries to copy her mother but because her neck is so short and her legs are so long she has to bend her legs to reach the ground.”

To celebrate the new Stag’s What’s On guide, free inside this edition, Vine looks at the top events coming to The Stag over the coming months

Y O U N G S TA R S S H I N E I N BULLFROG PRODUCTIONS Bullfrog Productions bring best-loved Disney musical Aladdin to The Stag this summer. Younger students from the ages of five to 12 years old perform a stage version packed with all the well-known songs on Saturday August 6. They rehearse for a week before starring in a matinee and evening performance. For those aged 12 years and over, there are two weeks of rehearsals from August 1–13 for this summer’s production of West Side Story. They then perform the exciting and fast-paced musical on Friday afternoon, Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening. The rehearsals are a great opportunity for children and teenagers to meet new friends outside of school, make the most of their summer holidays and enjoy interacting and expressing themselves through song and dance. Bullfrog Productions was formed in 2005 and utilises the talents of experienced actors, musical directors and choreographers. It is a great opportunity for children and teenagers to really understand the process of rehearsing, the build-up and the performance itself. In previous years, Bullfrog Productions has put on wonderful, critically-acclaimed shows including Fame and Footloose. The direction of Cheryl Baker and a great creative team mean that the quality is really high and the shows are always so popular. Cheryl says: “It will be wonderful to watch the young, local talent develop during the rehearsals... it’s so rewarding when they hear the audience cheer.”

B R A N D Y W I N E M U S I C I S E A S Y ON THE EAR There is a huge variety of music coming to The Stag this autumn. Brandywine Music is based in Kent and is dedicated to promoting live music that spans all genres. Whether it is rock, pop, folk, blues or jazz, there will definitely be something to suit all tastes. On September 3, John Otway performs his unique mix of songs and comedy. He plays a wide range of instruments, moving between the sublime and the ridiculous. Another fantastic band to catch on September 10 is the immensely talented Letz Zep, critically acclaimed as the leading tribute to the music of Led Zeppelin. G2 – Definitive Genesis, comes to The Stag on October 15, capturing the sound, energy and passion of early Genesis complete with an amazing light show. Enjoy a wonderful evening with the singer Heidi Talbot, John McCusker and Boo Hewerdine on October 21; the New York Times writes: “Heidi Talbot sings in a voice that’s both awestruck and tender.” Then on October 27, The Stag hosts Society, a country rock band from West Sussex. They sing in stunning three-part harmonies and having toured the States and Canada, they are definitely one to watch. Brandywine has more fantastic musical acts with the Oyster Band and June Taybor playing on November 4, Matt Schofield on November 12 and the Zombies on November 29. It may prove impossible to choose between this variety of wonderful events so book some tickets and enjoy a selection of these extremely talented bands and musicians at The Stag. n For more information visit www.brandywinemusic.co.uk Cheryl Baker

A G R E C I A N FA N TA S Y F R O M MERRY OPERA A Greek taverna in Chislehurst and the beach at Faliraki are two of the hilarious settings for the operetta Troy Boy. It features the story of Helen (of Chislehurst), her husband Menelaus, a dishy Greek waiter and a fantasy which transports her to Ancient Greece. Following a storming run in London, Troy Boy transfers to theatres in the south, coming to The Stag this September. The Merry Opera Company, founded by Chiddingstone resident Matthew Quirk, is a professional touring company and registered charity which makes opera accessible and fun. This production has been wittily updated by Kit Hesketh-Harvey from Offenbach’s La Belle Hélène; Kit also directed the show. He is renowned for his musical work as part of Kit & the Widow; his radio work, in particular his appearances on Radio 4’s Just a Minute,

and he has been adapting, writing and translating music and operas since 1988. Troy Boy has attracted excellent reviews. The Telegraph says: “This may sound like a gay dating website, but fear not: HeskethHarvey, who also directs the production, remains true to the Offenbachian spirit with an amiable Aristophanic pantomime, replete with dreadful puns and saucy double entendres.” This is a great chance to catch this entertaining show that did so well in London and is now coming to The Stag on Saturday September 24. n For more information visit www.merryopera.co.uk

The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is one of the best-loved and most thrilling of the Sherlock Holmes stories. Set on the wilds of Dartmoor, it tells of Sir Henry, heir to the Baskerville fortune but also heir to the diabolical family curse. This gripping production comes to The Stag for four days only this November. Dale Thomas, winner of a NODA (National Operatic and Dramatic Association) Award, and Stage Manager Trevor Bardell are presenting Tim Kelly’s adaptation in a fresh, innovative way which would rival any London production. The Players are extremely proud to have won many accolades over the years, most recently NODA Awards for Excellence for Rebecca, Woman in White and Hay Fever. They also scooped the Sir Michael Caine Award for Best Play at the Leatherhead Drama Festival in 2009 for Effie’s Burning. The Sevenoaks Players celebrate their 90th anniversary in 2012, a momentous occasion that will mark decades of wonderful shows. They have appeared at The Stag since its inception in the 1980s when they pioneered the conversion of the failing cinema into the thriving venue it is today. Their experiences at their previous home, the Drill Hall, are rather memorable: Pat Smith, who played Laurie in the supposedly sun-baked production of Oklahoma recalls being snowed on through a hole in the roof ! They are now very happy performing in the wellequipped, updated and sheltered Stag theatre. Catch this exciting and innovative run of The Hound of the Baskervilles at The Stag from November 9–12. n For more information visit www.sevenoaks-players.co.uk
