Hello and welcome to the July edition of Vine. We’ve had a little bit more sunshine since our June edition and here at Vine, we’re not the type to give up hope! We’ve had a very busy time this month, what with tending to our very own vegetable patch here at HQ and the very successful Grapevine networking event, held in the gardens of the lovely St Clere estate. So what can you look forward to in July? Well for starters, we’ve got all the newest trends that you’ll need to give your home a summer makeover: from brilliant bed linen to quirky little accessories for your kitchen and living room. As always, there are our regular little snippets such as news from our local MP, our Sevenoaks Star and of course we couldn’t go without the brilliant (and sometimes hilarious) Top 3 Tweets from our lovely readers! (Page 12) Sencio are back to give us a lesson in looking leaner, feeling healthier and personalising your exercise and diet plan in time for the beach (Page 26) and we’re looking at that old pastime of going to Pick Your Own down at the farm. (Page 18) And for all those who like to keep active and have fun over the summer, we’ve managed to round up the cream of the crop. We have Jousting at Hever, festivals on the lawn and lots more amazing events lined up. Even better, if you’re scratching your heads about what to do with the kids this holiday, our Top 5 Free Days Out (Page 30) will have you up and out the door in no time. Have a fantastic summer!

Grapevine’s first wedding Grapevine, the biggest free networking event in Kent, organised and staged by the Vine team, has produced its first-ever wedding. Two attendees, Laura and Russell Burton-Lawrence, exchanged vows on 3 June at Tunbridge Wells registry. The couple met for the first time at September’s Grapevine event, held at Chartwell in Westerham. Laura, a publisher and Russell, a barrister broker, were introduced through a mutual friend and for Laura it was love at first sight. The pair exchanged business cards and after a few emails and encounters, Russell soon realised the feelings were mutual. It was only three weeks later that Laura and Russell tied the knot at Tunbridge Wells registry office and found an old couple that morning to be their witnesses. We wish them all the best!
A good kick-about The hugely popular Breakfast Friends’ networking event recently saw the arrival of the world’s top football choreographer. Having played as a professional footballer, Mike Delaney is the man behind some of the most famous football adverts to be aired. Mike has worked with the biggest names in football from David Beckham to Cisse and Zidane, teaching the stars the intricate tricks seen in the likes of advertisements for Adidas and Puma. Breakfast Friends were lucky enough to have him demonstrate an impressive choreography session at their latest networking event, held at the 7 Hotel Diner in Halstead. Their next networking event will be on 19 July at the newly opened Côte restaurant in Sevenoaks.
Sevenoaks’ students competition success Pupils from a Sevenoaks school have won two county heats to reach the South East final of the national Young Entrepreneurs Competition. The 16 and 17 year olds set up an online personalised T-shirt company last September. Mr Carey, the students’ teacher, attributes their success to their diverse range of skills and high levels of enthusiasm. The south-east final takes place on the 20th of June with the England and Wales national final later in July. Good luck lads!
Mousetrap celebrates 25 years Ladies’ fashion boutique Mousetrap celebrated 25 years of trading on Saturday 8 June. Storeowner Vicky Dennis said: “It went amazingly well. We had a really good turnout of friends and customers.” Vicky created a window display featuring original products from 1988, the year the shop opened. A voucher for £250 went to raffle winner and delighted regular customer Kelly; and the celebrations continue with Vicky’s mother and business partner Pat, celebrating her 75th birthday later this month.
Man behind the music Classic FM’s long-standing morning presenter John Suchet will be holding a lecture on his new book about Beethoven. The Man Revealed is Suchet’s sixth book on the influential composer and with a lifelong fascination of classical music, his research dates back as far as 1990. The talk will be held at St Bartholomew’s Church, Otford, on Friday 19 July. Tickets priced at £8.

Our founder, Owen Hunnam, was crowned Young Entrepreneur of the Year at the KEiBA Awards last month. At a glitzy awards event at the Kent Showground in Detling on 27 June, over 550 guests gathered to celebrate business achievement across the county. Owen thanked his business partner, Charlie de Rusett, and the rest of the talented and creative 17-strong team at Vine.
Six young people from The House in the Basement youth café, have secured £4,000 to start Sevenoaks’ first ever youth magazine. The café on London Road has been open a year and they are hoping the magazine will promote young people’s voices that, according to their Facebook page, “need to be heard”. The name of the magazine is yet to be decided upon.
An amazing total of four Sevenoaks residents have been mentioned in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. In addition to Patricia Lovett’s MBE award for heritage crafts, Vine would also like to congratulate Mark Benedict Harrison and Heather Penelope Pegrum, for services to charity and Sarah Jane Dunnett, OBE for services to the National Health Service.

evenoaks School student, Alasdair Russell, won’t be spending his school holidays like the majority of other teenagers this year. That’s because on 19 October, Alasdair will be embarking on a mammoth expedition to raise funds for the Orchid cancer charity. At only 15 years old, he is set to be the youngest person to climb Mera Peak in Nepal, which stands at a massive 20,000 feet high. The trek requires a lot of training but as a keen runner, swimmer and rock climber since the age of five, Alasdair’s not phased. Alasdair said, “I usually train after school and sometimes during lunch. On average I’ll maybe run five miles a day and spend around two hours in the gym. My cousin was diagnosed with prostate cancer a while ago, so the issue is something very close to my heart. I’ve done similar climbs before in Sierra Nevada, California, so I’m not that nervous. I’m really looking forward to it – it should be fun.” Orchid is unique in the UK, focusing on male-specific cancers, helping to give advice and raise awareness through ongoing research. Alasdair hopes to raise £25,000 to fund a short film on how to talk to children about cancer for the charity’s website. Let’s help him raise as much money as possible for this great cause.

NEWS froM
the MP with Michael Fallon MP
After the Chancellor delivered his Budget last month in tough economic times, there is no doubt that things haven’t been easy for Britain’s families or its businesses since we came into office. But what remains the same after two and half years, is that the Government’s dedication to tackling our country’s problems remains undimmed. We have a three-point plan; firstly, dealing with our debts requires that we stop spending money we don’t have. Although this is difficult, we are doing it in a way that protects the things most important to us – such as the NHS and pensions. If we don’t get our debts down now, we would just be leaving it to our children to pay and wasting billions on interest payments. Secondly, we need to help businesses (particularly small and medium enterprises) to create new, good jobs that the people of this country want. Currently in my department, I’m working
12 vine July 2013 vinedigital.co.uk
on cutting tax rates to make British business competitive, slashing red tape and making Britain the place companies want to invest in. Thirdly, we need to make it possible for those who aspire to work hard and excel in life, to do so. That’s why we capped welfare payments, took millions of people out of tax (the increase in the tax-free allowance this April is worth £450 to basic rate taxpayers), put families on the lowest energy tariffs and froze council tax bills. We want people to feel that the Government is on the side of those who aspire. There are no miracle cures or easy choices–if there were, we would have taken them. Readers’ Pets Pet name: Eddie Owner: Jake Lazell Likes & DISLIKES: Eddie loves nothing more than eating live crickets in one gulp and hiding out in her coconut shell. During the warmer days she likes spending her time lazing on damp moss but she hates loud noises and being woken up when she’s sun bathing. Favourite Treat: Mill worms and crickets. A word from the owner: Eddie is really cool – lots of people are put off by her because she’s not your usual fluffy pet but she’s actually really gentle. Usually she’ll try and climb up my wrist and although she’s slow, if something startles her she can move pretty quickly! We called her Eddie because when she was a baby, we couldn’t tell if she was a boy or girl! n If you think you’ve got a print-worthy pet then email us at editor@vinedigital.co.uk

LEGAL MATTERS
Nigel Taylor of NJT Accountancy discusses the options you have if you own a property overseas
The team at Warners Solicitors offer regular expert advice on topics relevant to our everyday lives. This month Jane Bohill advises on the new conveyancing forms
MATTERS
I
nheritance tax allowances (IHT) in the UK are by far more beneficial than most European countries’ so why are we not utilising them to their full advantage? If you own a property overseas, especially in Spain, then there is a ticking time bomb for inheritance tax where the property is based. Allowances in Spain are only €15,956; in the UK it’s £325,000, a big difference! You also have to have a separate Will if you own a property to determine the beneficiaries of your estate. An example is an individual who has a €400,000 villa in Marbella. On death it’s not the estate that pays for IHT but the beneficiary. The cost to the beneficiaries after legal fees would be approximately €66,000, compared to the property valuation of €400,000. One way to reduce IHT overseas is to transfer your villa into a UK Limited Company where you own 100 per cent of the shares. Clever allocation of shares to family members will be able to reduce IHT further in the UK. By transferring your villa into a UK Limited Company there wouldn’t be any IHT to pay in Spain, there wouldn’t be any need to have a Will in Spain either and there wouldn’t be any legal fees to pay on death by the beneficiaries. Transferring the Villa into a UK Company is easy and there wouldn’t be any transfer fees/ stamp duty or any local taxes to pay. The UK Company would then own the property investment in Spain, with the previous owners now being the shareholder/directors of the company. Certain costs to manage the property, like flights, car hire, water, electricity and gas
would be a tax-deductible item to reduce your tax bill here in the UK. Under EU Treaty a UK Company is only taxed in one jurisdiction, the UK, and no taxes are payable onwardly in Spain. A UK Company is not an Offshore Company as they are charged an annual tax by Spain of 3 per cent for not being part of the EU. This process can occur if you are thinking about buying in Spain or thinking about moving your asset to a UK Company. Even if you have a mortgage in Spain attached to the property you can still request to move this mortgage to a new borrower (i.e. the Company), making sure that the liability will be paid off in full at the end of the loan term. Now is the right time to change direction about your Spanish property and to plan ahead on IHT. You really wouldn’t want to leave a €66,000 bill behind, would you? T
wo newly revised and exciting forms have recently been launched to help speed up the conveyancing process and provide more detailed information to the Buyer. Ok, perhaps not exciting for most, but these forms will have a positive impact on future conveyancing transactions. The forms are the Property Information Form (TA6) and the Fittings and Contents Form (TA10) and are required to be completed by the Seller at the start of the transaction. The Property Information Form requires the Seller to provide answers to an extensive list of questions which will enable the Buyer to have further insight to the property. It should also mean that the Buyer’s Solicitor will need to ask fewer extra enquiries thereby reducing the time taken to reach exchange of contracts. These forms are a vital part of the conveyancing process and the Seller needs to complete these forms with care as the Buyer may be able to seek recourse from the Seller if the information is inaccurate. The form highlights the increasing trend of some lenders reluctance to lend in certain circumstances. For example, the form now asks if there is any Japanese Knotweed present at the property. An affirmative answer could require Buyers to seek alternative mortgage assistance as some lenders’ may not lend if this invasive plant is present. The form also requires a more in-depth answer in relation to flooding by asking the seller to state what type of flooding has occurred e.g. ground water, surface water etc. The Buyer is usually responsible for insuring the property on exchange of
contracts and this information is often required by the insurance company. The Buyer will need to ensure that the building insurance policy covers the Buyer for all risks required and, if there is a mortgage, complies with the lender’s requirements. By providing this information to the Buyer at the start of the transaction it will hopefully ensure that these matters are dealt with sooner rather than later. Exchange of contracts can often be delayed whilst Buyers scrabble around looking for suitable buildings insurance. The Fittings and Contents Form has been updated to give a much clearer view of the items being included/excluded from the sale with space provided to insert proposed sale amounts to be negotiated between the parties directly or via the estate agent. Anyone looking to sell their property should try and obtain copies of these forms from their Solicitor even before a Buyer is found so that time can be taken to complete the forms and assemble the supporting documents required. Obtaining this information in advance should help to achieve an early exchange of contracts. n For advice on all aspects of the law relating to buying or selling property, contact Jane Bohill on 01732 747905, or email jane.bohill@warners-solicitors. co.uk Follow Warners @KentSolicitors

The fruit you’ve picked yourself is always the sweetest, because you’ve earned it
The fruit-picking season is in full swing this month. Matthew Mallinson takes a look at the best places in Kent to pick your own fruit this summer
vividly remember picking strawberries with my mum and sisters on warm sunny days as a child. We’d all try to find the ripest, juiciest-looking strawberries we could and every once in a while a small argument would occur over who could find the best fruit – in my opinion mine were always the best. Inevitably we’d end up picking way more than my mother had intended and end up with nothing but strawberries to eat for a week. The fruit you’ve picked yourself is always the sweetest, because you’ve earned it. Many farms across Kent will allow you to pick your own fruit and vegetables for a reasonable price, and it can be a great activity this summer. Stonepitts Farm, Seal is renowned for its succulent strawberries, having grown them for over 50 years! Traditionally they grew three varieties of strawberries: Florence, Malling Pegasus and Eros. The strawberries will come into season around early July. Malling Pegasus is highly recommended, offering all-round flavour, with soft flesh. Stonepitts also grows four varieties of raspberry which should be ready towards the end of the month: Tayberry, Glen Ample, Malling Leo and Tulameen. Glen Ample won’t be available until mid season but produces exceptional yields of firm fruit that is attractive and excellently flavoured. To celebrate 50 years of the farm in 2006, they added three new types of strawberry to their fields –
traditional Cambridge Favourite, sweet and juicy Alice and bright Belgium Hapil. Stonepitts Farm is open for picking now, running through to the start of August. For delicious Kent asparagus head to Lower Ladysden in Goudhurst, near Tunbridge Wells. Asparagus’ season is almost over but if you come to the farm before the end of July you might be lucky enough to pick you own. There are a lot of great uses for asparagus, whether steamed or grilled or used in a simple soup. There are also many herbal uses for asparagus, it being capable of helping in cases of nervousness, pain and urinary problems like bladder stones. Chris Kember said “once you have picked all of the fruit that you need we provide you with a free recipe card with some amazing uses for your produce”. There is also a wide variety of fruit and vegetables on offer at Hewitts Farm in Orpington, many of which are available for picking. Iain Morrison said: “All of what we grow is picked during the summer

season. All of the produce grown can be picked by the public, except for marrows, pumpkins and the selection of squash we also grow.” Their season starts this month; the first to grow are generally strawberries, gooseberries and spinach. In the months that follow coming into season will be thirteen varieties of eating apples including Cox’s Orange Pippin, Russet and Gala, and three varieties of cooking apple. Cox’s Orange Pippin is highly regarded due to its excellent flavour. Gala apples are sweet and firm with a mild flavour and a thinner skin than many apples, making them a popular choice. You can also pick four kinds of pear and many breeds of plum, in addition to cabbage, broccoli, sweetcorn and dozens more kinds of fruit and vegetables. In fact out of all the crops grown at Hewitts the only produce that can’t be picked are marrows, pumpkins and squashes as picking these is quite complicated. Later in the year, Castle Farm in Shoreham will have a great selection of apples available for picking, including the rare Norfolk Royals. Ripening in late August, the apple has a distinctive bright red colouring and a waxy appearance. You will find these apples sweet, juicy and bursting with flavour making the wait totally worth it. Also available are more traditional varieties such as Cox and Bramley. Castle Farm produces great apple juice, using a combination of the sweet Norfolk Royals and the sharp taste of Kentish Bramleys to produce a refreshing drink. Kentish cherries, which have a dark red colouring and a sour taste, will be in abundance during June. The farm is renowned for its hop gardens and vast lavender fields, which when mixed together make a great herbal sleeping remedy. The Castle Farm shop sells a range of sleep aids including scents, balms and teas. Picking fruit is a great activity to do with the family this season, providing hours of fun. It can also make a great alternative dating option, providing a romantic setting especially on a warm summer’s day.

t can be hard to find a personal trainer nowadays that will treat you as an individual rather than a runof-the-mill client. At Sencio, the personal trainers are leading the way. cne affects 80 per cent of us at some point in our lives and is the commonest skin condition that people consult their doctor about. It is extremely important that treatment for acne is started at the earliest opportunity to avoid the risk of secondary scarring. There are many treatments for acne that are safe and effective. At The Skin Clinic Sevenoaks Dr Johanna Ward and her team have helped treat thousands of patients with acne and acne scarring. The Skin Clinic has recently conducted a national clinical trial on

ecently there seems to be a lot of confusion about artificial sweeteners and sugar alcohols. What are they? Are they low carb? Are they good for weight loss? Are there health risks associated with their consumption? To put your heads at rest I have compiled some facts about the above products: Artificial sweeteners (the most common are: stevia, aspartame, sucralose and saccharin) essentially replicate the flavor of sugar without as many calories. Most artificial sweeteners are actually as calorific as table sugar (sucrose) but because they are much sweeter tasting, you require much lower quantities to get the equivalent taste. The good news… Sweeteners can help reduce caloric intake, but be sure to read the label to check how much you are supposed to have to replicate the same sweetness as table sugar. The bad news…
The best of a bad bunch… Stevia rebaudiana. Stevia is extracted from a plant with incredible sweetening properties. This is the only sweetener I would recommend, but I limit its use to one tsp/day. Try to limit your intake of other sweeteners to at most 2-3/week. Unfortunately sugar in any form will always be detrimental to fat loss and when over-eaten will have a negative impact on fat storage and health. Additionally, the undigested portion or sugar alcohol may have detrimental effects on the gut, causing diarrhoea and GI distress. THE BOTTOM LINE There is no magic pill that will result in fat loss and good health. Like most things that seem too good to be true, that is the case with these products. Stevia is better than sugar but try to avoid other artificial sweeteners. Sugar Alcohols are just carbohydrate rebranded with slightly fewer calories and some nasty gut side effects. They shouldn’t be regularly consumed as part of a healthy diet.
Various sweeteners have been associated with fairly bad health implications. For instance Joe Birch, the sweetener aspartame Precision Nutrition Certified (consumed by millions in the form of Diet Coke) has been described as a “multipotential n For more advice give us a carcinogenic agent, even at a call on 01732 451979 or visit daily dose of 20 mg/kg body www.betterbodyshop.co.uk weight, much less than the Vine 90 x 40mm base strip Ad:Layout 1 20/04/2012 19:17 Page 1 current acceptable daily intake”.

SUMMER SUN AT CAMBER SANDS Children love a sandy beach where they can explore long, open dunes, forage in rock pools and make sandcastles. Camber Sands is perfect for a lazy, sunny day by the beach. The tide goes out a really long way giving plenty of room for playing on the sands and providing a shallow stretch of sea to paddle in. Pack up a picnic, bucket and spades, suncream and a frisbee and head to the south coast for an old-fashioned and inexpensive day out. If it’s warm, take blankets and sit on the dunes to watch the sun go down. www.eastsussex.gov.uk

Don’t worry if you don’t know the first thing about gardening or landscape design, Outdoor Creations is a full-service landscape design company that will help you develop your garden from the initial concepts and ideas through to construction; they can also help with long term maintenance and care. Ramon Lawal, director at Outdoor Creations, explains that a lot of his clients are not necessarily green-fingered, but still enjoy the benefits of a well-designed and beautiful garden. He says that often during the early consultation phases a popular sentiment that is espoused is the need for the garden to be low maintenance. Many are happy to mow the lawn but that is usually where their involvement ends! Often non-gardener types lack the ability to visualise their outdoor spaces and this where consulting with a professional landscaper can pay dividends. It is important to plan thoroughly and
accurately in the early stages. Outdoor Creations makes sure that a proper survey is carried out and that scale drawings are created to prevent potential pitfalls further down the line. Outdoor Creations has years of experience in creating gardens in a diverse range of styles; anything from traditional cottage gardens to fully modern approaches. They are able to design for any type of outdoor space, from small gardens in the city to sprawling acres of country land. Often smaller gardens require more hardscaping to be able to get the most functionality from the limited space. It is the larger spaces that allow for a more organic English country garden style that blends well with the surrounding nature. In recent years a lot of clients have wanted their gardens to have a strong focus on socialising. Popular design elements are outdoor kitchens, social seating arrangements and heating to allow the space to be used all year round. Gone are the days where outdoor cooking centres around three blokes poking at a rusty old barbecue. Some of Outdoor Creations’ recent projects include outdoor sinks and coal-fired pizza ovens. Chefs such as Jamie Oliver have popularised the pizza oven for cooking a diverse range of meals such as fully fledged roasts! Another aspect of modern landscape design that reflects the times is the need for ecologically sound and sustainable design. Outdoor Creations always encourage their clients to go for sustainable options. Using sustainable and recyclable construction materials is fast becoming the norm, and rightly so. So whatever your budget, space or experience, Outdoor Creations can help you make the most of your slice of the great outdoors. n For more information visit www.outdoor-creations.co.uk or call 01732 844700

Vine takes a look at the must-have gadgets you’ll be racing to get your hands on this summer
Wine is great isn’t it? There are so many scenarios where a nice glass of wine is without equal. After a long day’s work, with a nice meal, sitting in the sun… Without the need to resort to buying increasingly expensive bottles of wine, there is a way to improve the quality of your existing wine. Cue the wine aerator for the wine buff in your life. If they haven’t been exposed to this little marvel already then they will be eternally grateful for your gift. Any wine connoisseur will espouse the virtues of airing one’s wine; this handy little gizmo does it as Lakeland.co.uk you pour!

Smart phone and tablet cases Everyone has a smartphone or tablet these days, the vast majority being iPhones, iPads or Androids. The proliferation of portable computers has inevitably seen the variety of accessories for them multiply ten fold, the most notable being protective cases for your phone. Haven’t found one that truly expresses your personality? Cue the customisable smartphone case, giving you the Idealcases.co.uk chance to create a personalised cover using a From photo of your choice. Invariably photos of loved ones prove most popular but in reality you’re only limited by your imagination.
£12.49
Wireless Bluetooth Speaker Since the advent of MP3s, the demand for small speakers for portable players has rapidly expanded, making the market crowded; it’s hard for any particular model to really ‘stand out’. However the ‘SoundShooter Wireless’ from Phillips, styled like a sonic grenade, is above par, with the ability to stream music wirelessly over Bluetooth. The speaker sounds pretty good for its size and features a karabiner clip to secure it to your bag, climbing gear or whatever you like!

JASON MANFORD JASON MANFORD - FIRST WORLD PROBLEM TOUR • Wed 17 – Thu 18 July 8pm £22.50
J
ason Manford has not run away to join the opera. Despite winning ITV1’s charity-based talent competition, Born To Shine, putting his new-found talent into practice by joining Alfie Boe on tour and then starring in the critically acclaimed West End production of Sweeney Todd alongside Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton, Jason has not forgotten his stand-up roots. He is now returning to his first love and has embarked on a huge nationwide tour with a major new show entitled, “First World Problems” and will be playing at the Assembly Hall Theatre in July. Jason jokes that, “Some of you might think I’ve had a career change, what with all the opera and musical theatre I’ve been doing lately. Not a chance. I’m excited to be getting back to what I really love the most – stand-up!” A comedian with a marvellously charismatic style, Jason strikes up a natural rapport with his audiences. He also possesses an irresistible amiability and generates a rare warmth on stage. All these talents have combined to make Jason one of the best loved and most in-demand comics in the country. The critics agree. The Guardian praises, “What Manford does best: classic, chirpy-chappie stand-up”. The Evening Standard calls him, “Effortlessly entertaining”. The Daily Telegraph says that he is, “Blessed with the sort of laid-back charm and sharp turn of phrase you can’t manufacture”. Meanwhile, Chortle declares that, “Manford retains an affably jovial demeanour that makes him warmly enjoyable company.” Chatting to me in a TV dressing room – he is about to appear on Jonathan Ross’s ITV1 chat show – in person Jason manifests the same likeable magnetism that draws thousands of fans to his live shows. His winning friendliness is no act. With this particular comic, what you see is what you get. Jason, who has also performed standup on BBC1’s Live at the Apollo, Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow and multiple Royal Variety Performances, cannot contain his excitement about returning to live comedy. The performer, a first-rate observational comic who describes his show as “essentially moaning about everyday life, but with
punchlines”, says the buzz you get from live comedy is unrivalled. “You can’t give it up!” he beams. “People who haven’t done stand-up focus on the negatives – ‘what’s it like to die on stage?’ I always say, ‘It’s horrendous, the worst feeling in the world’. But the lows are so low because the highs are so high.” The stand-up, who was also hosted Show Me the Funny and Comedy Rocks with Jason Manford for ITV1, carries on: “It’s a huge risk, but when it goes right, there is nothing better. It creates a communal feeling that you just can’t beat. You get all these people laughing and you think, ‘I did that!’ If you make one person laugh in a day, that’s great. Imagine multiplying that by 10,000!” Jason underlines that stand-up remains his overwhelming passion. “TV is simpler. You can do re-takes. But you’re not getting an immediate response. You don’t know if something is funny till weeks later. “Overall TV is much, much easier. A lot of the time it’s just professional reading. It’s reading while trying to make it look like you’re not reading.” Stand-up, on the other hand, is much more demanding. “On stage, you’re everything,” Jason continues. “You’re the boss. You’re the performer, writer, editor, director. You’re even Ofcom. You decide what to say. It’s brilliant.” Jason now has a very wide fan base. He observes that, “By now, people know that we share a sense of humour. They are aware of what they’re getting, and I’m aware of what makes them laugh. The weirdest thing is fans who remember jokes that I’ve forgotten. Sometimes I say to them, ‘I don’t remember that one. I must put it back in the act – it’s a good gag!’ The stand-up, who was a team captain on six series of 8 Out of 10 Cats as well as appearing on QI, Big Fat Quiz of the Year, League of Their Own and Would I Lie to You, adds that, “It’s also really interesting to see the demographic of my audience. I get grannies, their kids and their kids. It’s great to see.” Jason goes on to explain the title of his new show, “First World Problems”. “I’d seen the phrase online and liked it; it just sums up so much I think the phrase emphasises those times when we moan about the most trivial things. It’s as if we invent problems so we have something to moan about. I imagine someone in the Third World just thinking that we were all complete idiots!” Jason reveals that his material is constantly evolving. “I only tour every couple of years, and the good thing is that over that time your life and the people who surround you are constantly changing. Also, as you get older, you get more opinionated.” Sadly, Jason has to leave now - he must to go into make-up in preparation for the chat show. n For more information visit www.jasonmanford.com Written by James Rampton
