Annual summer festival
Breast Cancer Care walk
A two-week celebration of the arts, the 44th annual Sevenoaks Summer Festival begins on Saturday 22 June. This year over 100 events will be featured, from drama to live music to comedy and much more. Many local groups are taking part, along with celebrity concerts including John Williams, Steeleye Span and Chris Dean’s Syd Lawrence. The town will come alive with music played at three outdoor venues within Blighs. Young children will love the Long Nose Puppets performing at The Stag Plaza Suite while older children can enjoy an interactive jazz musical romp in the main theatre. A Latin jazz version of West Side Story will be sure to delight young and old alike! The Vine will once again host Colourscape, a visually stunning experience for all the family, which will be accompanied by a children’s art tent.
Come down to the loveliest castle in Kent this month to be tickled pink. On Saturday June 8, Leeds Castle will host a Breast Cancer Care Pink Ribbonwalk to raise money for the prevention of breast cancer. The event will also raise awareness of the more than 50,000 people who are afflicted by the disease in the UK every year. You’re invited to wear pink and take on a 10 or 20-mile challenge. This will be the first time Leeds Castle has hosted the walk, which is one of five across the country this year. Nationally, the walks raised more than £1 million last year. More than 500 people are expected to sign up. The day will include a village fete, including a barbecue, massage stations, entertainment and a medal for completion. Registering costs £30, walkers are required to raise a minimum of £175 for sponsorship.

Churchill to grace £5 note Former Prime Minister Winston Churchill will soon feature on the back of the five pound note. Sir Mervyn King, governor of the Bank of England, unveiled the note’s design at a ceremony at Churchill’s former home, Chartwell, near Westerham. The new note will be featured from 2016, with Churchill replacing prison reformer Elizabeth Fry, who gained international recognition following her appearance on the note. It is hoped that the note will bring newfound attention to the already world famous Churchill, who is often remembered as one of the greatest prime ministers of all time. Churchill will be the 16th Briton to claim the honour and the first statesman to join the list.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of Sevenoaks Flower Club, one of the oldest flower clubs in the country. To mark this historic milestone. the club will host a spectacular competitive exhibition of flower displays entitled ‘Summer Celebration’ on Saturday 29 June from 10am - 4pm at The Kippington Centre. In addition to the exhibition, the event will also feature a tombola and a sales table; admission is £3 which includes refreshment with free parking. Over the years the club has staged festivals at Knole, Penshurst Place, Hever Castle, Squerryes Court, Lullingstone Castle and St Nicholas’ Church, raising thousands of pounds for charity. Many club members have won medals, including Gold and Best in Show at Chelsea, and some have achieved distinction at national and world shows. Club meetings featuring professional demonstrators, and occasional workshops, are held on the second Wednesday of each month at 1.45pm in the Cornwall Hall. Visitors and new members are always welcome. n Call 01732 469277 for more details

Hop Farm music fest cancelled
Search for fire fighters in Ash
Remarkable comeback
This year’s Hop Farm Music Festival has been cancelled due to poor ticket sales, the economic climate seen as the cause for its downfall. The featured acts would have been rock band My Bloody Valentine, along with The Horrors and The Cribs. Promoter Vince Power said: “We thank the fans that have supported us over the past five years, it is with great sadness that the decision was made.” Ticket holders will be refunded.
A new fire station is being built at Ash-cum-Ridley and they’re looking to recruit on-call fire fighters. The fire and rescue services assistant director Sean Bone-Knell said, “there is sometimes a bit of a stereotype of who can be a fire fighter and we want to challenge that.” On-call fire fighters must be ready to respond to a call-out immediately.
A mother from Sevenoaks has made a remarkable comeback from a nearfatal motorbike accident to become a black belt in taekwondo. Almost 20 years ago she found herself lying on the A20, suffering from a severely broken leg, and was told she might never walk again. Her coach Michael Simmonds believes her to a be a role model. He said, “She has always shown determination and I had no doubt she would achieve her ambitions.”

Cat lover Peggy Earwicker has come up with a fun way to support Sevenoaksbased animal charity Rescued Animals in Need (RAIN). She collects unwanted and unused soft cat toys which are then ‘adopted’ by new owners for a donation to the charity. At 94 years old, Peggy may be the oldest volunteer charity fundraiser in Kent. She is a keen cat lover and plans to use her baking skills to support the charity further, by holding a bake sale.

Conservatives hold position
Sennockian protagonist
The Conservatives have held their position on Kent County Council in all divisions of Sevenoaks in a landslide victory. Before the election it had been theorised that UKIP might steal seats from the traditionally Conservative county. In all divisions the Conservative Party won by a majority but UKIP were their closest competitors across the board, showing that UKIP are on the rise, risking the Conservatives’ stronghold.
Martin Johnson’s new novel Roadrage is centred around West Kent, with its main protagonist living in Sevenoaks. The book sees ordinary Sennockian Gil Harper become targeted by a psychopath. He soon finds himself involved in a vindictive game that quickly becomes life-threatening. Roadrage will be released on June 3 and will be available at Sevenoaks Bookshop.

Last month, a group of Year 10 girls from Kent College attended the ‘Big Bang’ Science Fair in London, the biggest celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths for young people in the UK. A group of four girls entered the Institution of Civil Engineers competition to build the tallest tower possible and leave it standing for five minutes. The challenge saw them working as a team against other groups to construct the tower from wooden blocks, with the added trial of incorporating a tunnel in its base. The girls beat all competition, winning places on a skiing holiday in Italy next year.

City of Culture
Sam Large (eleven) and Leo Keenan (eight) from Next Dimension Gymnastic Academy (NDGA) in Tunbridge Wells brought home the gold at the InterRegional Championships in Southampton. Head Coach Holly Freeman said: “Sam and Leo really set the standard for the rest of the gymnasts.” NDGA was launched in October 2011; they train classes for all ages and experience, as well as running freestyle and fitness classes.
A student from Sevenoaks has been named Britain’s Undergraduate of the Year, winning a ten-week summer placement in Australia. She also was presented an award from legendary broadcaster Sir Trevor McDonald. Sarah Leggett is currently studying structural engineering at Sheffield University, having entered the competition against 4,400 students from 140 universities. She was formerly a pupil at the Weald of Kent Grammar School.
East Kent’s bid to become the UK’s City of Culture has seen support from many high profile names. Hollywood heart-throb Orlando Bloom, who was born in Canterbury, and Jools Holland are backing the bid. Even fictional character Bagpuss has joined the cause from his new home in the Canterbury Heritage Museum. Should East Kent become the winning ‘city’ then they will host a year of cultural events, attracting visitors and increasing media interest.

second interview
Every month we interview a notable member of your community
Steve Elson Vine chats to Steve Elson, lead singer of Rolling Stones tribute band The Counterfeit Stones, about their 22nd anniversary and their show Knock Up Your Daughters that is currently touring Where did the idea for the Counterfeit Stones come from? We started in 1991, as a one-off gig in San Diego, California. It was the Del Mar Grand Prix and they wanted an English band as the theme and we decided ‘let’s be the Stones!’. We had so much fun that we decided to stay together, got ourselves an agent and
28/05/2013 09:27
things really took. So how did you guys come together? We’re from West London, we went to a place that used to be called The Guitar Institution, a rock guitar school but it covers things like bass and other instruments too. Forming this group as an act I believe was a good exercise. Most bands when they have gigs it’s just like, ‘let’s have a bottle of vodka and take some illegal substances’ and then they go on, but with us it was very professional. We all loved the Stones and while we didn’t look exactly like the band it was about having the right shape so that with wigs and make up we looked like them. What in particular do you love about the Rolling Stones? While they haven’t really done a good record since 1980, which was Start Me Up, they always stood out because they were a bit different, they had an edge. We always found when we did cover music we got a far better reaction [doing the Stones] than the Beatles; there’s something about them that gives them such a wide appeal. Mick is 70 years old now and he’s still doing well, must
be doing something right. So tell me a bit about Knock Up Your Daughters It’s the life story of the Rolling Stones on stage, covering all the different looks and sounds from the last five decades. It’s very tongue-in-cheek but also factually accurate. Essentially it’s a lot of humour, good music and a fraction of the price to see the real thing! So what else are you up to? We’re performing at Music on the Hill at Kings Hill on Sunday 21 July. It’s not confirmed yet but we may be performing at Carfest, an event hosted by Chris Evans from Radio 2. We often play abroad in Belgium and Denmark to rooms of 60,000 to 70,000 people. What do you like to do when you’re not focusing on your music? It’s kind of half a hobby but I keep fit and do lots of martial arts, essentially so I have the body of Mick Jagger all year round. I love editing film and recording music, just anything to do with music in general. I am very passionate about cooking; my love for it almost competes with music. But in a race music would win!

Idiopathy is the debut novel from Sam Byers, exploring the relationship of three old friends who meet up after years apart and attempt to rekindle the relationship. The story explores themes of love, narcissism and loneliness in a surprisingly humorous manner. Sam describes the characters as having just entered their thirties and struggling with becoming adults, still obsessed with immature things. He says “I’ve been working on the book for the last three years, in my head I’m already planning what to do next and this book kept rearing up. The experience of it being out in the world and people reading it who you’ve never met is both exciting and slightly terrifying!”.
Head down to Knole’s annual Open Evening on Wednesday 26 June from 6pm to 8pm for a chance to see the showrooms, garden and other wonderful spaces – for free! Daft Punk have made a come back recently with their new song Get Lucky which is currently on pace to become the highest selling single of 2013. Their new album Random Access Memories is the first since 2005’s Human After All which was generally considered a flop. The album will change the face of dance music, providing a more sophisticated edge through making use of live instruments. Along with Get Lucky, which is extended here over the radio version, there are many great new tracks to get you moving. Random Access Memories is a bold, new statement from Daft Punk.
MUST-DO If you’re fairly confident on your bike and ready to broaden your cycling skills, try out your local SkyRide on June 16 from 2-4pm. This month the route begins at the primary school in New Ash Green, heading out on quiet roads towards Stansted. The cyclists will travel at a comfortable pace, the rides taking place on quiet roads (with some small hills) and many sites can be seen along the route. The whole route will take approximately 1 hour 20 mins to complete, covering a distance of 10 miles. There will be time to stop for a rest and a drink as you travel through this scenic tour of rural, picturesque Kent. n For more information visit www.goskyride.com

This financial year will be a significant one in Royal Mail’s history. It has been in public ownership for 377 years. But the postal market is changing rapidly and one of my key ministerial responsibilities is to oversee its privatisation so it can gain access to the private investment necessary to innovate and seize opportunities in new markets. The need for these reforms did not come about overnight. Mail volumes have been declining for years as businesses and individuals increasingly use electronic communications. Unless Royal Mail is able to raise the money it needs for future modernisation and investment from the private sector then every pound that it borrows is another pound on the national debt. Royal Mail has the capacity to run as a profitable, fully commercial business that can raise private capital. We’ve already taken steps to put Royal Mail on the road to sustainable
14 vine June 2013 vinedigital.co.uk
profitability such as taking its pension deficit onto the public books and separating Royal Mail from the Post Office: they are distinct businesses and the split allows both companies to modernise. The final phase is the sale of Royal Mail shares. We are going to make 10% of the company available to an employee share scheme so the postmen and women of this country can share in Royal Mail’s success. Our critics have said this is a danger to the universal postal service and will raise prices. Those are myths. Only Parliament could change the 6-days-a-week, oneprice-goes-anywhere service. The real danger to the universal service is if we don’t allow Royal Mail to modernise and get the investment it needs. This government is making sure both those things happen. n Have a question for the MP? Please send to editor@vinedigital.co.uk
Hospices can be a scary place for young children, where they don’t get the comfort of their family except in visiting hours. Helen Jordan is a care nurse for chYps Children’s Hospice at Home; instead of taking the child to the hospice, they take the hospice to the child. Helen works across West Kent, supporting children with life-limiting or lifethreatening conditions, also visiting children at school or in a respite setting depending on their condition. For the family she gives advice on managing their child’s condition and symptoms when she isn’t there, offering psychological support in hard times and liaising with other professionals – such as therapy staff, teachers and social services – on behalf of the parents. Helen said, “one of the best things is being able to prevent children from having to go into hospital or being able to support a family so their child can come out of hospital earlier.” ChYps is a charity, not part of the NHS, and so relies on generous supporter donations, to provide their hospice service free to families, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Faye Williams, a mother of two ill children in Sevenoaks, said, “chYps are a wonderful charity and they have made an enormous difference to our lives. We are very grateful to the people who give generously to fund the service. I hope this continues to ensure chYps can reach out to other families in need.” n For more info visit www.chyps.org, follow @chYpsCharity and ‘like’ www.facebook.com/ chypschildrenshospice
Readers’ Pets Pet name: Hetty & Willow Owner: Naomi Gomersall Likes & DISLIKES: They both love getting their belly scratched and sun bathing, as well as winding up the family cocker spaniel. If they aren’t fed on time you’ll know about it! They will kick up a fuss if you walk past their pen without saying hello and they hate being out in the rain. Favourite Treat: Monkey nuts, they also love apples. A word from the owner: Hetty is like a bull in a china shop, having to be the centre of attention. Willow is very cheeky, nudging you and then flopping onto her side so you’ll tickle her belly! Naomi is teaching them to sit on command and wait for treats, as well as training them to go for walks. n If you think you’ve got a print-worthy pet then email us at editor@vinedigital.co.uk

any clients seem to say the same thing, “I’ve setup as a sole trader and I just pay my tax bill each year”, not thinking about the best approach to business. SOLE TRADER Most business owners usually have a great idea or a skill that they can use or sell without the need to be employed, but they just go out to the ‘street’ without thinking about their set up or structure. A sole trader can be an advantage if you’re a small business as it’s quick and easy to set one of these up. All you have to do is to notify HMRC as soon as you set a sole trader business up so that you can pay the appropriate national insurance contributions. A self assessment is then filed in the following tax year to show your earnings for that period and to work out how much tax is due. You can also use a personal bank account, rather than a business bank account, saving you on fees. Accountancy/ professional fees are usually lower for a sole trader as statutory accounts are not required. You are taxed at the income tax rates, rather than dividend rates, which are much higher. All risk associated with this set up is on the owner; therefore, if a customer doesn’t pay the bills, it’s up to the owner of the business to pay for it. LIMITED COMPANY A limited company has limited liability and it reduces the risk to the business owner. When you set up one of these companies, there is quite a lot of paperwork to deal with, although there is a massive tax benefit to the owner of the business, especially when it’s a family-run business. HMRC will be notified by
Companies House that a company has been set up, although as director you are liable to notify HMRC what the company does and other legal obligations. The company pays corporation tax on its profits before any dividends are paid to the owners, but once dividends are paid, a shareholder will pay 0% tax on dividend income up to £32,010 (2013/14). This is because the Company pays you dividends out of profits on which they have already paid tax; therefore you receive a 10% tax credit at the basic rate. If you employ staff, the business will have to pay national insurance contributions at 13.8% over the primary earnings level, so it can be quite expensive. We would usually recommend a limited company set up, as there are so many tax benefits that a business owner can achieve through this structure, i.e. low earnings under the LEL reducing the need for RTI, dividend payments, use of home as office, relevant life policy through the business and much more. ver the recent months, partly as a result of the withdrawal of Legal Aid from family cases, there has been increased interest in mediation as a method of resolving issues arising from a relationship breakdown. Mediation is not about getting couples back together. It is a process that provides couples who have decided to separate or divorce with a forum to talk things through. Mediators are trained to help people reach agreement about how to make the best arrangements for the future. Mediation can ease the pain of family breakdown because it: • can reduce tension and hostility • helps individuals make informed decisions that are right for them in the circumstances • keeps communication channels open • saves the cost of expensive court battles • helps the children by showing parents working together • often leads to a better psychological outcome because people are making decisions themselves rather than having them imposed on them. Mediators give impartial guidance to help their clients understand what matters to them. They also help them to make their own
choices about the best way forward. The emphasis is on practical solutions which feel fair for both parties and for the family as a whole. Clients usually have a number of sessions with a mediator (perhaps four to six one or two-hour sessions). They are able to consult their solicitor at any time to take advice and once an agreement is reached, it is approved by the parties and their solicitors then complete the legal formalities. Warners is one of very few firms in the locality who offer mediation services and are fairly unique in that we offer all models of divorce process, including collaborative law. n ethos that adopts a high standard of academic achievement, enjoyment of learning and promoting a readiness for the real world sits at the heart of Combe Bank School. Many factors at Combe Bank prepare the sixth formers for the responsibilities and challenges that the real world presents. With outstanding facilities and a high-quality learning environment, students are given the relative freedom to indulge in their specific academic and extracurricular interests. Being taught interpersonal, leadership and confidence skills ensures the young ladies will have a better chance of succeeding in later life and this is at the core of Combe Bank’s ethos. Gareth Hughes, Head of Sixth Form, knows it’s an extremely competitive market out there. With thousands of young people securing solid university degrees, pure academia isn’t enough to get noticed and most employers are looking for something that gives an individual the edge. Combe Bank can acknowledge the problems that the recession has caused for future graduates and the difficulties they will face when applying for jobs. Many schools are aware of the difficult economic situation
Vine takes a look at how Combe Bank School prepares its sixth-form girls for the real world
but not many know how to prepare their pupils for this. Combe Bank have gone that step further by taking an active approach in teaching their pupils that building relationships in the commercial world will be hugely beneficial in the future. The sixth form girls took part in a networking course held by Vine Publishing that encouraged them to start building a network by utilising their contacts and surrounding networks efficiently. They were taught how to follow up every contact they meet, how to work a room as well as giving them confidence and reassurance that asking for help and work experience is a good thing. Further tips and tricks were provided on how to network effectively and later put into action when they

attended Vine’s monthly Grapevine event hosted at Combe Bank School on the 25th of April. With over 30 local businesses present, the girls took the opportunity to meet as many people as possible putting their social skills to the test. The event proved a great stepping stone as some of the girls have now secured work experience through following up contacts, such as McMillan Williams Solicitors, a very successful firm. The social media training sessions were available to the sixth form girls as well as members of the senior leadership team. The training sessions illustrated the importance of social media to market oneself in the real world and highlighted the business opportunities as well as the pitfalls on future careers. They were taught how to effectively use social media tools such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn to enhance their social network and market themselves appropriately. Through these interactive sessions the girls have now taken an active approach to follow their chosen universities on social media networks. This will enable them to get a sense of what the course is like, allowing the girls to build up a dialogue with future lecturers. As education has always been seen as a formal process, the emergence of social media has ensured a whole new world in which individuals can interact and engage with key figures. The girls are placed in a better position when writing their personal statements and attending interviews. This year at Combe Bank, all the girls have received offers from their university choices and with the help of network building and social media training they will be extremely well prepared for the challenges of the real world.

THE SNAIL
AT STONE STREET Vine heads to The Snail, a great gastropub in Seal to discover their new menu as inspired by traditional English pubs 01732 810 233 www.thesnailatstonestreet.co.uk
he Snail has it all – great atmosphere, fantastic food, exceptional service, expansive gardens, an adventure playground for the children to explore and sun-loungers for relaxation. George and Evelina took over the pub in October 2012, bringing new decor to the restaurant and redesigning the kitchen. Inspired by the best pubs in the country, they have brought a traditional English style to their menu. The front house manager Andrew Woollard said “we took the best from the old and brought in the best new things we could”. The cuisine at The Snail is second to none, specially prepared by the chefs from locally sourced meat, fish and produce to the highest quality. New head chef Jason Gibbons has worked to bring a British style to the menu. The menu includes many classics, given culinary twists to achieve a fantastic flavour. For instance their braised lamb shank comes with crushed grain mustard potatoes giving the dish an exquisite,
complex taste. The menu is accompanied by a specials board that changes every fortnight, the most popular courses are incorporated into the main menu. Jason created the dessert menu from scratch, using traditional favourites like Eton mess and sticky toffee pudding. Part of the pub has been converted into a soft-furnished, comfy area for drinks and snacks, leaving the other part as a dining area. George and Evelina worked tirelessly to renovate the garden to make it suitable for al fresco dining, doing all the work themselves. Whether you’re after a light bite, a quick drink or a full three-course meal with friends or family, The Snail has you covered.

Skateboard Your Way to Fitness
G
With Go Skateboarding Day on June 21, Matthew Mallinson explores the health benefits of skateboarding
o Skateboarding Day started in California back in 2003, as an excuse for skateboard enthusiasts to make skateboarding their top priority. Since then it has branched out to be a worldwide event. While it is often celebrated for its thrill levels, creativity and the communal spirit found among skateboarders, it is rarely recognised for its health benefits. The act of standing on the board, let alone jumping and squatting, gives a fantastic workout for the quadriceps and calves. In activities like running or cycling the body uses the same muscles over and over.
Contrast this with skateboarding where the body is constantly in motion, legs and feet performing different tasks. This means that you are working a greater amount of muscle groups, giving you a fuller workout. Persistence will help to build up your stamina, without you even having to learn a trick. Don’t take this to mean that tricks aren’t a good workout, they most certainly are! To maintain speed on ramps requires a person to test their balance and fortitude. Many tricks require the skater to rapidly switch from squatting to standing to jumping, providing a great cardio workout. Doing tricks regularly will provide a boost to your flexibility from frequently stretching and moving your muscles into different directions and positions during travel. When you first start skateboarding you’re likely to fall off, a lot. Persistence will help you to improve your coordination on the board, which will also provide benefits in other parts of life. Balance is another important element to become a skateboarding star, while tricky at first to stay balanced throughout a ride it will eventually become second nature. Your core muscles will strengthen over time, helping you to be centred on the board at all times.
In addition to the benefits to your body, skateboarding can also help the mind. When on the board you have to block everything out of your mind. Physical activity raises endorphins, which are like a natural antidepressant, helping you to feel better after a tough workout. The main benefit of skateboarding is self-esteem. At first when you get started tricks will seem a real challenge, learning a new trick will make you feel fantastic about your ability and help push you to the next level.

Confused about carbohydrates? Joe Birch answers your questions
Q: How much carbohydrate should I eat?
Q: Do I need still need to eat carbohydrates If I am trying to lose weight?
A: When trying to lose body fat try and limit carbohydrates to no more than 1g/kg of bodyweight per day. For most people that would be a fist-sized portion or starchy carbohydrates (e.g. rice, potato, sweet potato).
A: If you are a sedentary person who does very little intense exercise, then the answer is bluntly, no. When at rest the body can effectively use stored body fat for energy; however, the breakdown of fats into sugars for the use of energy is a relatively slow process when compared to the conversion of carbohydrates into energy. When you start doing intense exercise, a quicker source of energy is required and that’s when carbohydrates become important. While there are essential proteins and fats, there are NO ESSENTIAL CARBOHYDRATES. Unfortunately, if you eat carbohydrates at most meals, your body will be constantly trying to process the carbohydrates rather than burning your own stored fat for energy. Q: What about fruit and veg?

A: Both fruit and vegetables provide a lot of the essential nutrients your body needs for normal healthy function. However, if your goal is fat loss, then you should focus on increasing vegetable intake and limiting fruit intake to one portion/day. Fruits contain naturally occurring sugars, that while alone aren’t unhealthy, when combined with little exercise and a diet high in carbohydrate they won’t aid fat loss. Vegetables in a diet should be unlimited and added into most meals. They will provide very little calories and help you feel fuller.
Q: When should I eat carbohydrates? A: The best time to eat carbohydrates is immediately after a workout, when muscle will be at its most insulin sensitive. The carbohydrates will then be stored by muscles/liver rather than leading to fat storage. The best types of carbohydrate to have post workout would be unprocessed starchy carbohydrates like white rice or white/sweet potato. If you haven’t exercised that day then you should try and limit carbohydrate intake by eating more vegetables and one portion of fruit, or having one small portion with your evening meal. Q: Won’t not eating carbohydrates at breakfast leave me feeling run down? A: No, you will be fuller and able to regulate your own blood sugar more effectively by eating a breakfast consisting mainly of protein and healthy fats (e.g. a spinach and cheese omelette or Greek yoghurt, berries and nuts). Margaret Morton Tell us a bit about you. I’m 94 years old and have been at Emily Jackson House for four years. I was born and raised in Scotland in the suburbs of Glasgow in a place called Easterhouse. I was an only child and grew up on a cattle farm with a Shetland pony. I used to be a florist and like flowers.
Vine catches up with a few of the residents at Emily Jackson House to find out more about their life experiences, thoughts on technology and their time at the home Emily Jackson House provides 24-hour general nursing care for the elderly, as well as expert care for those with dementia. With a person-centred approach to care their services are adapted to fit individual lifestyles. With a fantastic activities programme customised specifically for their residents they definitely don’t miss out on a social life.
David Atkins
Do you have a particular memory that sticks with you? I used to go on cruises with my aunt, which I really enjoyed. I have also been to Austria. What do you like about Emily Jackson House? I like getting involved in all the activities. I love doing quizzes and playing bowls. I also enjoy the occasional whisky from time to time.
Tell us a bit about you? I’m 77 years old and have been at the home for 18 months. I was a marine for five years and joined up to the Royal Marine Commando training centre at Lympstone. I was an aircraft carrier and we travelled all over Europe. It was one of the best experiences of my life but I remember how strict they were and if you were disobedient you would be whipped. It was terrifying but I put up with it. Do you have a past memory that sticks out for you? The day I started school it was the first day of the Battle of Britain. Me and my five brothers were on our way to school and the sky was really black. There must have been around 3,500 enemy bombers heading over Sevenoaks and Otford. At the time it was a laugh, we were only kids so we didn’t know what was going on. What do you enjoy doing at Emily Jackson House? I have lots of friends here and like to get involved in all the vast activities that Emily Jackson House hosts. I particularly enjoy going out bowling. What do you think about the advancement in Technology? I don’t have a mobile, can’t turn on a computer and wouldn’t even know how to start a car. I don’t like responsibility but I am a good passenger and keep quiet. I think technology is untrustworthy.
n For more information, please contact 01732 743824 or visit www.barchester.com or drop in to see us
Brian Evans Tell us a bit about you? I am 82 years old and have been at the home for two years. I used to work in retail in House of Fraser but it was very different back then. I have taken part in more than five marathons. One in New York, Hong Kong, Paris and four in London and have spent a lot of time training for them. I also used to play bowls and was good at Bridge. What do you like about Emily Jackson House? My friends come over and we play bridge in the afternoon. I also took part in a drumming session, one of the many activities Emily Jackson House puts on. Do you use any form of technology? I have family that live in Canada and they send me emails and photos of my grandchildren, which we print off and read. I also have a mobile phone that I use.

Keeping Time A clock can feel obsolete in the modern home when everyone has a mobile phone, so to maintain its place it has to hold a certain style. This wooden framed New Era clock (£64.95 from Maisie K) mixes oldfashioned features with modern details. As well as being fashionable, it is also very functional – its large display making it very easy to read.
BOOK OWL These owl bookends (£42 from Knole House Furniture) will look great in a rustic home. Finely detailed and unique, they are sure to be a talking point in your living space. They are more than just pretty, however, their solid form allowing them to be functional enough to support even the heaviest of books.
Box of Tricks This wooden box is available in two sizes (£10.95 for large as pictured, £7.95 for small from Maisie K) giving your home an old-fashioned look with their well-used style. As pictured it is full of artificial flowers (£19.95 per bunch of five), but it can be used to hold most things – from magazines to fruit. The boxes are sturdy enough to double as a small table, holding a cup of tea or coffee.
FLYING STYLE This plane statue (£72 from Knole House Furniture) is simply designed, allowing it to fit into most rooms while still interesting enough to attract attention. Reminding you of trips overseas and escaping, this plane is sure to inspire a few holidays abroad among your family and friends.

ew Wave AV are award-winning installation experts, specialising in creating bespoke home automation systems and audio visual solutions. For their latest project they were asked to convert an under-utilised garage into a private cinema room. To give the room an uncluttered feel a 119” drop down screen was installed with a projector concealed in the ceiling. Both are hidden away until the moment they are needed, then a single button touch drops the projector, the cinema screen, the blackout
blinds, dims the lights and turns on the audio visual system. The 7.2 speaker system is delivered through discreet Kef in-wall speakers which are colour matched to blend in with the decor of the room, while the feature lighting incorporates a starlight ceiling, colour-changing LED strips and

Vine travels to the secluded studio of Sutherland Furniture, an environment that will ensure you choose the perfect kitchen
W
hen Douglas Sutherland and Alex Donmall set out to establish a presentation studio, they knew they wanted something a bit different. Dubious of kitchen showrooms, the guys felt it constricted clients to ready-made designs as opposed to creating a kitchen from scratch. Having occupied the space of an old, noisy workshop in Hever, Doug and Alex acknowledged it was an unsuitable place to conduct a meeting and wanted a quiet, intimate setting where people could pop in for a cup of tea to discuss their kitchen plans. Their current studio was formerly a Catholic church in The Weald that lay abandoned for over 10 years. Douglas and Alex converted the insides of the church to create their own space, featuring two offices and a kitchen display. If you head down to the studio you can expect a warm welcome and a thorough discussion on the type of kitchen you are after. Sutherland Furniture pride themselves on their design process and will suggest four or five different approaches to make your idea work. The team will take your plans into consideration and provide you with many ideas on how to achieve the look you desire. Making everything from scratch, Sutherland never work to a rigid design but tailor it to individual specifications to create a truly bespoke kitchen. Their motto is simple, “listen to what the client wants, then do exactly as they’ve asked”.
All of the design consultation is provided free of charge up until the project commences. With the ability to design a kitchen of any style from contemporary to traditional they also incorporate any features the individual requires. The business has steadily grown through word of mouth and referrals and continues to remain a reputable and highly regarded business. At the studio, there is one kitchen display, built simply to demonstrate the build quality rather than supplying a template for clients to choose from. The studio also boasts a iTotal Control Aga, which works with a smartphone, tablet or laptop allowing you to control the Aga’s many ovens with the touch of a button. If you are out shopping but need to cook a roast you can simply turn on the Aga using the dedicated app, allowing you to go about your regular day. Aga Total Control cookers use under a fifth of the energy of a traditional oven, making it a must-have for the money saver or environmentally conscious. You can also check out Douglas’ other passion, creating Canadian canoes. Douglas uses his downtime to make the canoes, reliving the stress of running a business. Two are on display at the studio, made from the finest cedar and perfectly designed. So head down to the studio to see what Sutherland can do for you!
