Kent College receives prestigious award Kent College Pembury is delighted to announce they have recently been awarded HMC (The Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference) accreditation, reinforcing their status as a thriving independent day and boarding school for girls in Kent.

HMC membership is the key association for leading independent schools. Strict criteria must be met in order for a school to achieve the status, factors such as examination results, size of sixth form and pupil retention are considered.

The HMC committee who visited the school in January commented on how well Kent College lives up to ‘its aim to treat each pupil as an individual in a caring and supportive community”.

Kent College is already a member of the Girls’ School Association (GSA) and will remain in both. They join several local schools in HMC status, including Sevenoaks School and Tonbridge School.

Success for local choir Green Street Blues are a local ladies chorus who specialise in a cappella singing and have proven a smash hit on the national choir circuit in recent months.

Green Street Blues are hoping to outdo themselves as part of the highly acclaimed Voices Now Festival at Camden’s Roundhouse on the 22 and 23 of June. Green Street Blues will perform part of City Songs, a celebration of the choral and the communal, which is a new commission by Eriks Esenvalds with words by Emma Jones.

Comedic therapy The Old School House, Tunbridge Wells is hosting a comedy event on Thursday 30 May at 7pm, featuring many talented comedians from the UK and around the world.

John Gordillo has previously directed shows for Eddie Izzard and Reginald D Hunter, returning with his unique brand of ambitious and honest material after a six-year hiatus. His shows are nourishing, analytic, intellectual and hilarious. Brian Gittins is the master of awkward comedy, attracting Ricky Gervais; he is a big fan of audience participation. Peter White is Canadian born but has become incredibly popular wherever he travels, accomplishing a great deal in just a few short years. Lloyd Griffith started out in Tunbridge Wells back in 2009, quickly establishing himself for his natural, original comedy. Due to strong language and adult humour the show is only open to over 18s. RFC promotion Tunbridge Wells have returned to the London Two South East League, after defeating Folkestone on Saturday 20 April.

Tunbridge Wells had to beat Folkestone by a bonus point in their final game to achieve more points than Sheppey, securing their promotion.

They won in style, with a final score of 54-3.

Promotion was one of the key aims for RFC, with captain Rob Harrison before retiring now the season is over.

Wildlife Photography Competition launches If you’re a budding wildlife photographer a competition launched by Kent Wildlife Trust may be right up your street. The sixth annual Wildlife Photography Competition aims to encourage locals to venture out during spring and summer to capture natural assets of the Garden of England. It doesn’t matter where the photos are taken, as long as it is in Kent.

The four categories cover fauna (animals, insects etc), flora (plants, trees etc), landscape and coastline; it is subdivided into adults and juniors (17 and under). Prizes are for grabs in the free competition and the winning entries will be showcased across Wild Kent magazine, the trust’s website and five visitor centres across the county. An awards evening will be held for the winners at The Barnyard Restaurant in Upchurch in the autumn. n The closing date for entries is July 31; an entry form can be obtained by visiting www.kentwildlifetrust.org.uk or calling 01622 662012

Oil rush comes to Sevenoaks It may sound hard to believe, but Sevenoaks and the surrounding villages are to be investigated for oil this year. A seismic survey on behalf of Northdown Energy will assess the likelihood of the oil being found in the area by scanning the ground for telltale signs of fuel.

The plans for prospecting have resulted in some local outcry from those who fear that, if oil is found, the subsequent fracking process may disturb the natural beauty of the area.

Kent County Council have been keen to stress that drilling is not a foregone conclusion and that these are only preliminary investigations, stating “It’s not a bad thing to see what we have – if we know we have oil we can decide what to do with it.”

Wrotham Arts Festival The Wrotham Arts Festival returns this year, bringing together exhibitions of fine art, sculptures, ceramics and craftwork from over 60 artists from around the south east. It is a wonderful day out for families with a cafe, raffles, choir, and of course the opportunity to view and purchase artwork from local talent at a reasonable price. This year’s prizes (as provided by Duncan Lawrie Private Bank) will be awarded by world renowned author Martina Cole. All proceeds go towards the upkeep of St George's Church. The festival will run from Friday May 10 to Sunday May 12 from 10am to 5pm. Sevenoaks RFCH end strong season Sevenoaks finished their Rugby League campaign on Saturday 13 April, after their fourth successive win in the London Two South East league, over the fifth-placed Lewes.

Most of the first half of the game, Sevenoaks were down 19-0 in Lewes’ favour, but they gained a stronger foothold towards the end of the half, thanks to a try from Streather which Jonathan Barber converted. They were able to dominate the second half, before Captain and Man of the Match Ollie Robinson secured their victory with one final try. The final score was 31-19.

Sevenoaks RFC finish the season in tenth place, leaving them in the London 2 South East league.

MoonWalk UsTwirls, a group of women from Tunbridge Wells, will walk around London in bras as part of MoonWalk London 2013 on May 11, raising funds for breast cancer.

Plans to restore the Tonbridge war memorial have been saved thanks to additional support from Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council. The war memorial has fallen in to a state of disarray, with crumbling walls and broken pavements.

Additionally the area lacks suitable access for the disabled. The restorations will hopefully be finished just in time for the anniversary of the First World War next year.

Sencio Community Leisure (SCL) has teamed up with Mencap for a health and safety challenge. The scheme will encourage staff to be constantly mindful of potential hazards, whether it’s a broken tile in a changing area, a worn carpet or a piece of gym equipment requiring urgent attention. Each time a potential hazard is identified and dealt with SCL will donate £5 to Mencap.

HMV’s Saviour HMV stores across Kent, including Tunbridge Wells, Canterbury and Maidstone, have been saved by restructuring expert Hilco in a £50 million deal, saving over 2,500 jobs across the country. HMV collapsed in January, due to internet downloads and online stores. Hilco have had previous success as the owners of HMV Canada.

Their chief executive has said, “we believe it has a successful future ahead of it”.

One of the more common complaints I get in my postbag is about international aid; constituents ask why, if there is austerity here, we are spending money overseas.

There are two justifications for foreign aid. The first point is that it is enlightened self-interest. When we deliver aid around the world we stabilise regions and promote development. Not only is a man with food in his belly and shoes on his feet less likely to be susceptible to radicalisation by someone preaching an extremist creed, but he is more likely to remember Britain fondly in years to come. A more developed world means more trade, more customers for British goods and greater wealth for all.

The second point – and one less likely to persuade the critic – is that while we have a primary responsibility to our kith and kin in the UK, that does not alleviate us of our responsibility to help

those outside our borders. To put it in perspective, Britain is the 7th biggest economy in the world, one of the richest per head, and our aid budget is only 0.7% of GDP. We spent £8 billion on aid, compared to £118 billion on the NHS and £33 billion on education in 2010.

Proportionally, the aid budget is tiny.

Yet, with that tiny budget, we are able to do a fantastic amount of good abroad.

To give one example, we’ve vaccinated 130,000 children from Yellow Fever since 2010. For those 130,000, this may quite literally be the difference between life and death. Just think of the horror if the UK government let 130,000 British children die for the cost of a few pence.

It can’t have been easy for Alison to prepare for the 2013 Virgin London Marathon around her full time job and home life but somehow she found a way. Alison is the General Manager at Emily Jackson Care Home, overseeing the day-to-day running of the superb team of seasoned carers. She raised £3,000 for Children With Cancer UK, a charity that is dedicated to the fight against all childhood cancers. To fit in training she had to get up early in the morning and stay up late at night, escaping for hours at the weekend running in cold and snowy conditions. Alison feels the training was totally worth it, allowing her to run the 26 miles with relative ease. Her family spurred her on throughout, as her parents and extended family were at different points. She used them as checkpoints and encouragement. She said “Seeing them gave me a feeling of ‘I can do this!’. I saw my family at the final stretch and sprinted the last leg”. When we asked if she would do it again, she didn’t even need a minute to think before responding “Absolutely! The page that’s all about you

The town’s name is derived from the Saxon word “Seouenaca”, the name given to a small chapel near the seven oak trees in Knole Park around AD 800.

The eponymous oak trees in Knole Park have been replaced several times over the centuries.

In 1902 seven oaks were planted

by The Vine cricket ground to commemorate King Edward VII’s coronation. During the Great Storm of 1987 six of those trees were blown down. There are now eight trees on the site, of varying ages.

Sevenoaks is sometimes called ‘The Town in a Wood’ due to the number and variety of trees in the town.

Sevenoaks School is one of the oldest lay foundations in England and the third oldest nondenomination school in the UK. It was founded by William Sevenoke in 1432, as detailed in his will to be a school where boys could learn free of church constraints.

Ok, that is easier – I am a huge fan of countryblues. Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Rodriguez, The Stones, all the classics really. Our last album was country-blues, I would say the new EP though – it’s more melodic rock.

Vine catches up with local musician Jay Scott of Jay Scott and The Find to talk soundtracks, festivals and their latest EP Don’t Cry.

Yes. John Astley. We have been really lucky, Adam works in an incredible studio in London and has lots of contacts, so John Astley mastered the EP – he worked for The Who and Led Zeppelin and said he had a very enjoyable evening working on our EP which was obviously really flattering. We’ve also just got one of the tracks into the new James McAvoy film Welcome to the Punch – the song is called LA – that was a very proud moment too.

Tell us a little bit about your line up and who you guys are.

Well the band is Jay Scott and The Find and the idea originally was that we would find different musicians and have a revolving lineup – but everyone who has joined has been so good we’ve wanted them to stick around!

At the moment it’s an old friend of mine, Alex – he is a fantastic guitarist – Adam on drums,

So what is next for Jay Scott and The Find?

Some friends of mine are organising a really unique little festival called the B Festival

with lots of very talented artists – the idea is to bring together people on the verge of being signed – and we’re planning to chat there about how to launch your own music via social media. There’s lots of stuff really. We are working with Matt Cardle at the moment, releasing the EP this year and hitting the festivals in the summer. We have a music video coming up too – basically the plan is to get our band and our music out there as much as possible.

With the month of May upon us, Matthew Mallinson explores the traditions of May Day and how they influenced the holiday of today

he start of May signals warmer weather, and is the start of summer in many eyes. On the first of May, the national holiday of May Day occurs and celebrations exist as expressions of joy and hope after the long cold months.

The earliest recorded celebrations around the time of May are related to the Roman goddess Flora, who represented flowers, spring and fertility. Between April 28 and May 3 around 240 BC the festival of Floralia would occur, celebrating the cycle of life with the giving of flowers and copious amounts of alcohol, along with theatre performances and

circus events. Prostitutes were a common feature at these festivals; the satirist Juvenal noted that they often danced naked and fought in mock gladiatorial combat.

Many Germanic countries celebrate the spring festival of Walpurgis Night on April 30 or May 1, involving dancing and bonfires. The idea of a bonfire is brought over from the fabled celebrations on the Brocken mountain in Germany, where it is said witches would await the arrival of spring. People dress in witch garments and burn broomsticks and wiccan effigies on bonfires, bringing connections with Halloween.

A similar event is the Celtic Irish tradition of Beltane, a fire festival that celebrates the coming of spring and fertility. Many proposals would occur at these events, often with marriages occurring either immediately or soon after as spring was considered the best time to get a woman pregnant. Fire was a key part of the celebration, with people leaping over the Beltane bonfire to bring good fortune, fertility and happiness through the coming year.

When Christianity became popular across the Western world, these pagan holidays lost their religious importance, often merging with or replaced by Christian ones. Though May Day has lost its religious connotations

it's kept many of its established themes. The maypole is erected with people dancing around as a celebration of life and fertility. A May Queen is crowned, who wears white to symbolise purity and a crown of flowers to celebrate fertility; and in this regard she draws comparisons with the goddess Flora. The holiday of May Day is celebrated across the country on the first Monday of the month, marked with a bank holiday.

So next May Day when you’re enjoying the Morris dancers and activities on offer, remember the traditions that started it all.

KENTISH OPERA TURNS 60!

2013 is an auspicious year for Kentish Opera as they celebrate their 60th birthday, Giuseppe Verdi’s 200th birthday and The Stag Theatre’s 30th. Vine magazine caught up with them to talk all things opera, Aida and Mastermind

I

n 1951 Audrey Langford – a renowned local singer and operatic tutor – was asked to put on an opera as part of Bromley’s contribution to the Festival of Britain celebrations.

She joined forces with Ande Anderson (then the director of the Royal Opera House) and the resulting performance of Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte (whose cast was drawn almost exclusively from Audrey’s pupils) was such a success that the pair formed Kentish Opera in 1953 and produced The Marriage of Figaro the following year.

Opera has not only survived as a local business and institution in spite of the many economic dips and dives of the past 60 years but has gone from strength to strength!

Now under the Artistic Directorship of Sally Langford (the daughter of Audrey) it is about to launch it’s 60th Anniversary Production of Verdi’s Aida: a powerful piece known for its impassioned arias, surging choruses, and exhilarating orchestral music. It is a particularly apt choice, not only because this year sees Giuseppe Verdi’s 200th birthday but because Kentish Opera’s own Sian West recently reached the grand final of Mastermind with the operas of Verdi as her specialist subject – and while she did not take home the coveted glass bowl

she demonstrated wonderful knowledge of the composer and his works.

This month’s traditionally staged performance of Aida will be sung in English with international soloists from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, English National Opera and Glyndebourne, together

with a professional orchestra and Kentish Opera's superb amateur chorus. It will run from 15 - 18 May at The Stag Theatre and is a must for any fans of opera, or those simply looking for a theatrical and visual spectacle.

Nigel Taylor of NJT Accountancy discusses the dilemma of a company car ACQUISITION If you are a small business owner and are thinking about buying a brand new company car then you may want to think again!

Buying a company car is all well and good as your own company is paying for it, but there are pros and cons with this type of acquisition.

From the company’s point of view, it would be entitled to capital allowances on the car in the year that it was purchased and the corresponding years, depending on the cost of the car. Some cars may receive a 100 per cent first-year allowance depending on their carbon dioxide emissions. In this scenario where 100 per cent allowances are received in the first year, it’s a shock to the business owner in the following year to see a larger than expected corporation tax bill!

The downside is a cash flow issue for the business, as well as an asset on the balance that has a valuation considerably reduced once the car rolls out of the showroom.

Also remember that there is a benefit in kind charge (BIK) to the employee when the car is available for private use. The charge to the employee is derived based on the CO2 emissions of the vehicle, times by the percentage of the list price.

CONTRACT HIRE Contract hire is another alternative to outright purchase, though no capital allowances are given in this type of transaction.

With contract hire you have the option, usually after three years, to give the car back and replace the vehicle with another one.

Servicing and car tax might also be included by the supplier, so check the small print.

LEGAL MATTERS

There is a BIK charge to this transaction which normally you are informed of by the supplier of the vehicle.

The three-year contract hire is recorded on the balance sheet as a firm commitment, so make sure you can afford the payments over this period, as this may affect your business credit rating.

DIVIDEND PAYMENTS If we ignore the obvious route to acquire a car, an alternative might well be a dividend payment to purchase a private car out right or to lease a car over a three-year period.

Monthly payments from your company to you to cover the lease payments can be treated as a dividend payment, or an end of year dividend may well pay for the car!

This type of payment all depends on how much the owner of the business is earning, so please check before you dive into buying a brand spanking new car!

ax planning is understandably not often considered by couples when their marriage breaks down. As a tax solicitor, I am often asked to plan in advance in this very specialist area. A product of complete marriage breakdown is that I am given a fait of accompli, and timing is all important. Tax planning, whilst difficult in this situation, is not impossible provided both parties work together.

During the tax year of separation, that being 6 April to the following 5 April, any assets transferred between spouses are transferred in a tax neutral manner for capital gains tax purposes (“CGT”). This is known as no gain/no loss. The asset transfers at the transferor’s base cost of purchase or, if higher, the value of the asset as at 31 March 1982 (if the asset was held at that time).

CGT exemption is only applicable between spouses in the fiscal year of separation. The couple must have lived together at some point during that tax year. If assets are transferred in later tax years, CGT will be charged on the asset transfer in the normal way. This issue is particularly important in relation to business asset transfer between

spouses. Second properties, holiday homes and property portfolios are particularly at risk from CGT. In the majority of cases the largest asset held by a couple is the family home and this is especially true in the Sevenoaks area. Usually the family home is free from CGT, however when a couple separate the property ceases to be the main residence of the non-resident spouse.

Consequently, CGT may arise on the non-residing spouse’s share in the property.

Gifts between spouses are not subject to Inheritance Tax, the assets transfer with spouse exemption and this continues until the time of divorce, i.e. decree absolute.

If separation occurs towards the end of the fiscal year the time limit for tax efficient transfer of assets between couples may be severally hampered. LET’S GO BIRD WATCHING n One of Britain’s favourite birds and the unofficial national bird of the UK. As well as being visually stunning, the birds are known to be very people friendly, so you may be lucky enough to have it feed from your hand. n A small bird, with quite an ornate plumage. A migratory bird, you should be able to catch them in the Spring time foraging for food in muddy areas. Enjoying a modern lifestyle, both the males and females take turns to incubate the eggs. n These beautiful birds will often be found in trees, foraging for food. Often they lay their eggs in the second half of May, so have a listen out for the chirping of their young. n One of the smaller birds of prey, the Eurasian Sparrowhawk has a blue-grey colouring with light orange underparts. Males tend to prey on smaller birds, such as tits and finches. The females can be up to 25 percent larger and as such are capable of taking down birds weighing over 500 grams. n A breed of finch, the Siskin has greyish green plumage, with grey-streaked white underparts and black and yellow wings. The male has more of a yellow colouring with a distinctive black cap. Their chicks are often born in the period between April and June, making this a great time to look for them.

Golf can be a tricky sport, especially for beginners. Matthew Mallinson outlines a few tips for anyone who’s looking to start out

f you’re just starting out playing the sport, most Golf Clubs will offer days when you can try out the various types of club for a small fee; this day will allow you to check your skill.

Don’t buy any clubs until after you have tried some out, as you may find you are stronger with a different hand than you originally thought. After you have decided to go forward with playing golf, you may wish to get some lessons.

Start out by buying one of each of the four basic golf club types. A driver is the first club you use, to

drive the ball from the starting position to the green; it has a large head to hit the ball the farthest distance. Irons are smaller and lighter with a flatter head, the aim being to move the ball closer to the hole itself from the green. A sand wedge is used if you get trapped in

a bunker to get you back on to the green.

The putter should be the final club you use, to move the ball from the last stretch of green to your target – the hole.

Be advised that to play on a golf course there is a certain etiquette to uphold. You must dress smartly and you should wear golf shoes as opposed to trainers. Even at clubs that don’t require membership to play, being a member will give you reduced fees and priority booking over the average golfer.

A handicap will be really helpful if

you plan to play against a more professional golfer as it gives you additional hits to achieve par depending on your experience. So if you have handicap on 36 and are playing a 72 par course you will in effect have a par of 108.

As your improve your handicap should lower until you are a pro.

We’ve always felt privileged here at Vine to have our headquarters set in the beautiful grounds of the St Clere Estate, and this month we caught up with our neighbours at St Clere to discuss history and corporate hospitality

T

he St Clere country estate is a private, working estate in Kemsing, and is still completely family-owned. Because of this, it maintains a quiet, intimate atmosphere.

The grounds are famously tranquil, made up of over 2500 acres of land and gardens nestled in the heart of the Heaverham countryside, and the estate itself is full of unusual and picturesque spaces.

There’s a lot to see in the surrounding grounds before tackling the house and gardens; cottages hide behind thick woodland, stables and barns face a classical pavillion on the banks of a lake and the surrounding acres are crisscrossed with ancient footpaths that are still used today.

The formal gardens of the main house provide a beautiful contrast to the sprawling countryside that surround them, and are made up of neat terraces, a renowned kitchen garden, and border hedges. It’s easy to forget what century you’re in when taking a tour of the grounds, and in fact most of the estate has been preserved since its construction in 1630. The same terraces you can walk over were once trod by its one-time owner, Thomas Boleyn. It is likely that Henry VIII visited St Clere early in his relationship with Thomas’s daughter, Anne Boleyn, a courtship undoubtedly helped along by the impressive collection of roses on display in the gardens. More recently, the house has been home to the first Chairman of the BBC, and later Montagu Norman, Governor of the Bank of England, who turned the house into a school for London’s evacuated children.

The house itself also contains many surprises besides its rich and varied history. Unusual octagonal turrets overlook the gardens, adding a touch of whimsy to its characteristic 17th-century manor style and the interior has its share of artefacts, too: the staircases and panelled walls have remained unchanged since the 18th century and the central chimneypiece was designed by renowned architect Sir John Soane, responsible for designing the Bank of England, Whitehall and the House of Lords. The 1793 chimneypiece and doors to the drawing room were brought from the Bank of England and reset in St Clere in 1933.

But it is not all about a bygone age at St Clere’s Estate; the house and grounds are still fully functioning and now the formal rooms of the house and the grounds are available for both personal and corporate hire. Nothing better prepares the pupils for the big wide world than Sevenoaks Prep School. The pupils undertake a programme developed by The Prep called the Social Entrepreneurs Project. This is an initiative to encourage pupils to set up and develop their own small businesses with profits being used to help support the charity HopeHIV in their work with AIDS orphans in Africa.

The children start out with ÂŁ10 in the hope of making a profit through their start up businesses and, in the process, develop skills in marketing, accounting and business that provide an edge for these pupils as they look towards the future. The combination of entrepreneurship and social responsibility learned whilst undertaking this project is extremely valuable.

he population bulge which is seeing a dramatic rise in pupil numbers at some primary schools has reignited debate over the ideal school size. Russell House, an independent prep school in Otford, has around 200 pupils between the ages of 2 and 11. Its headmaster, Craig McCarthy, believes that there are clear advantages for children in a school of this size.

As Mr McCarthy told Vine, “There is a real sense of camaraderie in our school, with all pupils urging each other to do well and co-operating effectively.”

A common commitment to achieve success “Russell House aims to instil in all pupils an understanding that most things that are worthwhile and ultimately fulfilling, require commitment, time and effort,” said Mr McCarthy. “Our relative size allows us to get that message across more easily.” The sense of common purpose within the school also extends to parents as the small size encourages closer relationships between home and school. It is easy for parents to become involved and to talk to teachers regularly on an informal basis. In the process, they gain more insight as to how best to support their child.

Engaging with the Co-curriculum Neil Tetley, Deputy Head Co-curriculum at Sevenoaks School, explores the value of co-curricular activities

C

o-curricular activities are an integral part of a Sevenoaks School education.

We aim to provide opportunity and excellence for our students. In sport a high number of Sevenoaks pupils represent the county or country and many of our teams are successful in regional and national competitions – the U15 rugby team recently won the Kent Cup, for example. Our music and drama are among the best of any school in the country, all housed in a wonderful state-of-the-art performing arts centre. However, it is just as important that every student is given the opportunity to take part and last year, for example, we put out 125 representative sports teams including E and F teams in certain sports. Above all it is about finding something for everyone and having fun.

At Sevenoaks we use the term co-curricular activities instead of extracurricular as we believe that these activities are not extras but absolutely integral to the education we provide. Students spend three timetabled afternoons taking part in co-curricular activities: two on sport and one doing either community service or Combined Cadet Force. We were one of the first schools in the country to offer community service as part of the school day and we continue to innovate in what we offer our students.

What is the value of a co-curricular education?

Enjoyment

First and foremost it is the area of school about which students are very often most passionate. Every student at a school like Sevenoaks should be able to find something he or she enjoys, be it chess, football or music, and this will add tremendously to his or her school experience.

Confidence

Students gain confidence from overcoming challenges, from performing in a concert to completing a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition. At Sevenoaks nearly all our Year 10 pupils enter the Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award and then can go on to take Silver or Gold. The DofE scheme is often one of the first times students have to be totally self-reliant, without a parent or teacher to guide them.

Initiative, risk taking and resilience Life is about trying things, making mistakes and learning from them. Co-curricular activities allow the freedom to do this in a way that is much harder in the classroom.

One Sevenoaks student last year even set up her own charity and, while this has been challenging, it has been an invaluable experience.

Teamwork and leadership Students need to learn how to be part of a successful team and how to lead and inspire others. Team sport, ensemble music, plays and Combined Cadet Force all offer this. Indeed as students get older many will be expected to take more and more responsibility for activities and even teach younger pupils. Last year a group of Sevenoaks Sixth Formers took their own production to the Edinburgh Fringe. While they were mentored by the Head of Drama they had to take responsibility not only for the creative side but also the logistics: booking the venue, selling tickets and promoting the play.

Creativity

Within the curriculum there are inevitable constraints of exams and schemes of work. Not so in the cocurriculum. Students can produce their own films, direct or even write a play or compose their own music.

If the school doesn’t offer what they want, they can set up their own society.

Compassion and emotional intelligence

Above all, through co-curricular activities students learn more about themselves and about how to interact with other people. By taking part in community service they learn that there are people in society with very different life chances from theirs. Sevenoaks School launched the Voluntary Service Unit in 1960, and today over 400 students a week take part in community service, with activities ranging from visiting elderly local residents to working with physically disabled children and helping adults with learning difficulties.

Final thoughts

When thinking about secondary schools parents often look at results, university destinations and league tables as these provide the most quantifiable, tangible means of comparing schools. However, education has to be about much more than we can measure and I would argue that the co-curriculum is as important in a student’s personal development as anything that happens in the classroom. Activities outside the classroom are often the most enjoyable area of school life; it is where students make many of their friends and develop the skills and characteristics that will be so important later in life.

King’s Rochester

Sport, Sondheim and Sightseeing King’s Rochester is a prestigious, independent school in the heart of Kent’s historic city of Rochester. Combining history and modernity King’s is both traditional and dynamic. Vine caught up with them this month to discuss all the latest in school news

CELLO CONCERTO WORLD PREMIERE 24th of April saw the pupils of King’s Rochester perform a wide range of classical and modern pieces in Rochester Cathedral accompanied by the Orchestra Roffensis. The concert featured a performance of Mozart’s Requiem by the Senior Choir with countertenor solos performed by international soloist David Allsopp - a former King’s pupil and King’s Cathedral Chorister. Other soloists were post-graduates from The Royal College of Music and King’s own Kate Lambert. The concert also saw the world premiere of Sam Hall’s solo cello concerto Mind Slices. Sam is a member of King’s upper sixth form and an up and coming force in the music world having won the prestigious Fanfare! Competition, as well as the Medway Young Musician of the Year Competition 2012 and the ESTA Young Composer 2012 award (senior category). He has the accolade of being the youngest Musical Director at a major British theatre and has had his compositions performed at the BBC Proms and broadcast on BBC Radio 3. This year Sam has been awarded a scholarship to study composing at the Royal College of Music.

Blood, Wit and Barbers Sam Hall also took centre stage for King’s recent production of Stephen Sondheim’s darkly-comic musical Sweeney Todd playing the title role opposite Caroline Canty’s Mrs Lovett. The cast included 30 King’s pupils who tackled Sondheim’s epic score with enthusiasm and great aplomb. The performances were given a highly polished edge by the professional input of West End theatre directors Karen Hebden and Wayne Morris. Wayne Morris designed the set and Karen Hebden not only directed the show but gave the actors the tools to put on a convincing and mature performance and undertook the job of technical director, training pupils in the school’s Technical Society in all the various jobs required to make a complex musical like Sweeney Todd come to life. Douglas McIlwraith, King’s Rochester Director of Music, said of the show: “Our cast of 30 senior school pupils (aged 13-18) have thoroughly enjoyed rehearsing Sondheim’s electrifying score and the performances were hugely entertaining, if a little scary!”

Record Breaking Student Having competed in the Kent Indoor Championships, King’s Rochester pupil Katie White (Year 11) is now Kent champion in the 200m, improving on her personal best by over a second! She also won Bronze in the 60 metres, missing the Gold by just a tenth of a second. U17 Katie also competed at the Tonbridge Athletic Club’s Open Meeting last month and despite the cold and windy conditions she ran the 150m in 19.25sec, trimming Tonbridge club’s record for not only her own age group, but also for seniors!

Stars from the world of rugby, cricket, hockey, football and athletics turned out in force to a gala charity sports dinner to support King’s chosen charity for the year, Restart – The Rugby Players’ Charity, which was represented on the night by Alex Bennett, former Saracens and England A rugby player.

At a sumptuous dinner held at The Rochester Corn Exchange, parents, staff and friends of the school dug deep and raised in excess of £20,000 for the charity which provides financial, practical and emotional support to injured rugby players and their families.

Exploring European History Prep and Senior pupils enjoyed a History trip to Moscow and St Petersburg where they absorbed the nation’s history; from the absolutism of tsarist Russia to the totalitarianism of Soviet rule and lived through temperatures of minus 11 degrees Celcius! In addition, a number of Prep pupils participated in a German exchange programme with a partner school in Munich - experiencing family life and improving language competence. Additionally, an annual pilgrimage to Ypres, included visits to the First World War battlefields which were both moving and thought-provoking for pupils and parents alike.

History trip to Russia

Discovering the Maritime Past The King’s Rochester Pre-Prep enjoyed a Maritime Arts Fortnight which stressed the importance of Rochester and Chatham’s maritime past with each class visiting a maritime place of interest and undertaking various art and photography projects assisted by local artist, Wendy Dawes. Poets and authors, Victoria Shoesmith and James Armstrong lead poetry workshops with all year groups and these activities culminated in a Pre-Preparatory School Art Exhibition in Chadlington Hall.

A love FOR languages Vine catches up with Tracey Taylor, a qualified, trained, CRB-checked licensee for La Jolie Ronde and owner of Linguaholics Tell us why you started Linguaholics I started learning languages from a young age and adored it so much that I went on to do a degree in Modern Languages. I feel passionately that learning languages offers a fantastic opportunity to experience new cultures.

Why is it so important to learn a language?

KEEPING IT GREEN MAKE-DO MONDAY The week started with Make-Do Monday in which children were made aware of how much money is spent on new clothes every year and how much is wasted and sent to landfill. The children arrived at school in clothes from charity shops or hand-me-downs, and prizes were awarded to the oldest, worst and best-dressed children. This proved to be a fun and enjoyable day for both the children and teachers.

TURN-OFF TUESDAY Turn-off Tuesday encouraged the children to conserve energy by turning off lights. The evening before, staff placed various photographs of eyes over light switches throughout the school. There was a treasure hunt activity with pupils finding and identifying whose eyes were guarding which switch. If any light had been left on, the children were eager to be the first to turn it off.

WATER CONSERVATION As well as taking part in Green week, Hazelwood School has also taken part in a local competition organized by Sutton and East Surrey Water as part of their ongoing educational programme for schools in the area. They grabbed first prize for identifying different ways of saving water in and around the home.

The school’s commitment to the environment continues to blossom and with such beautiful surroundings, the upkeep of the land and school is essential for the children’s working environment.

As an ongoing project the school has worked closely with YES Glazing Solutions for over 10 years to ensure the maintenance of the school. Sited within a conservation area, there are certain criteria that have to be considered to ensure the building remains the same aesthetically.

azelwood School provided YES Glazing Solutions with a brief for a multi-phased project replacing the original sliding sash windows and doors on the main building as well as the sliding doors on the school’s enclosed swimming pool. Having served many years, the originals were in disrepair and from an environmental point of view had become inefficient and obsolete.

After various site visits and consultations, it was agreed that to reduce product maintenance, improve energy efficiency and closely resemble the originals, the Rehau Heritage sliding sash window should be used. Specified with a slim centre rail and deep bottom rail, the windows perfectly matched the originals allowing for a seamless multi-phased project to commence, without any obvious difference between old and new.

For the replacement doors to the main property, highquality bespoke timber joinery was hand crafted with energy-efficient glass installed.

New low-maintenance, energy-efficient sliding doors were installed to the swimming pool enclosure.

Alongside the installation of a new polycarbonate roof undertaken by the school, this has given the swimming pool complex a new lease of life.

As an ongoing project, YES Glazing Solutions have acknowledged the importance of the learning environment at Hazelwood School and have worked

around scheduled timetables to ensure minimal disruptions. Since the beginning of the project YES Glazing Solutions has managed to stick within its proposed costs illustrating their impressive work commitment and consideration for Hazelwood School.

James Howard, Director of YES Glazing Solutions, and a former pupil of Hazelwood School emphasised how the building deserved the attention to detail and high quality products, ensuring longevity and energy efficiency: “It’s great to see how the school has grown and evolved since my time there, whilst retaining their high standards and traditions.”

GROWING Through the Granville Vine takes a look at the The Granville School, how it fosters its students' potential and creativity at every stage of eduction, and how this is paying off with exceptional academic results

he Granville School is an independent day school in Sevenoaks for girls aged between 3 and 11 and boys between 3 and 4 which aims to develop the full potential and natural talents of each student in order to prepare them for a fulfilled, happy and productive life. It is an ethos that runs through every stage of the school. This month Vine caught up with The Granville for an insight into school structure and educational emphasis for each year group.

Early Years Life at The Granville begins at the Foundation Stage of the Early Years department where boys and girls aged between 3 and 4 benefit from individual teaching in a happy and inspiring environment. The emphasis throughout the Foundation Stage is fostering and stimulating the young students’ natural curiosity so that they are able to develop more formal skills as they approach the Juniors. The curriculum is balanced between academia and creativity – with literacy and numeracy skills incorporated into play activities while art, craft, class music and ballet lessons all help the children to express their creative sides. French classes begin in the Early Years with songs, games and rhymes, and physical development is encouraged with the use of the Early Years Adventure Playground as well as specialist teaching in PE and swimming.

Juniors (Key Stage 1) If Early Years aims to foster children’s natural curiosity then the goal of Juniors is to help them satisfy this curiosity and introduce them to the joys of learning. The Junior department is a busy, challenging and exciting environment where individual talents and strengths take centre stage. Experienced teachers support the girls, helping them consolidate their emerging skills and understanding, and leading them towards becoming confident, more independent learners. The main educational emphasis in Juniors is on developing reading, writing and number work while pupils’ general knowledge and understanding of the world around them is developed through stimulating cross-curricular work in science, history, drama, French and art to name but a few.

The emphasis on creativity that emerged in Early Years is not lost in Juniors either. The Granville’s grand tradition of festivals – whole school occasions which celebrate various events throughout the year through music, drama, poetry and dance – helps to keep creativity alive.

Seniors (Key Stage 2) Academic range and depth increases in Seniors and is enhanced by a number of extra-curricular clubs for sport, art, music and hobbies (such as chess). Intellectual stimulus, skilled teaching, and the best of resources and

modern equipment produce a very high standard of work. Good study habits that will prove invaluable in secondary school are nurtured through regular challenging work and class tests. The emphasis is still on the core subjects of literacy, numeracy, science and ICT, but the syllabus also includes the teaching of History, Geography, Art, Music, French, Design Technology, Drama, PHSCE and RE. By the end of Year 6 pupils will have reached their full potential.

Perhaps the best proof of The Granville’s educational system and ethos is to be found in the acheivements of their students. This year their Year 6 girls received a fantastic set of 11 plus results with seven out of the eight girls who sat the test passing. Four were accepted to Tonbridge Grammar School, one to Tunbridge Wells Grammar and two to Weald of Kent. A Summer of Celebration at

Walthamstow HalL JUNIOR SCHOOL Celebrating the school’s 175th birthday is just one of the exciting events taking place at Walthamstow Hall Junior School this term Examination Success Year 6 pupils are getting ready to set sail for their new Senior Schools in September. The girls are celebrating great success in their entrance examinations which saw an academic scholarship, two academic exhibitions, an academic award and a sports award being awarded by Walthamstow Hall Senior School and two academic scholarships being awarded by Sevenoaks School.

Learning by Doing Throughout the year pupils in every year group have enjoyed a wide variety of trips related to their learning in the classroom. Recent trips have included: Reception meeting some eagles and owls which were almost as big as they are when they visited Eagle Heights; Year 1 girls enjoying a journey through time at Yesterday’s World; Year 2 climbing to the top of the Monument in Pudding Lane; Year 3 visiting the British Museum; Year 4 stepping back in time at Penshurst Place and Year 5 going to school in France as part of their residential trip.Year 6 are eagerly anticipating their forthcoming residential trip where they will be experiencing many adventures to develop their independence and leadership skills.

Taking to the Stage There are many opportunities for every girl to take to the stage during the school year, be it leading a school assembly, singing or playing in a concert or performing in the productions staged by each year group. The summer term will end with Year 6 giving their final Junior School performance in their special summer production.

A Summer of Sport Pupils competing in this term’s matches and sports days will be working hard to emulate the achievements of the Year 6 swimming squad who brought home a haul of individual and team medals and record breaking times from the Kent Primary School Swimming Championship Finals in March. The team won both the Girls Open 100m Medley Team and the Girls Open 100m Freestyle Team events and set new team best times for both. They also took 2nd places in the 50m Butterfly and Backstroke and 4th places in the 50m Breast stroke and 50m Freestyle. They also await taking part in the Finals of the national IAPS Swimming Championships.

Happy Birthday This year Walthamstow Hall celebrates its 175th birthday. The Junior School will be marking this special occasion with special ‘historic’ activities and a tea party on June 26, the day upon which the first foundation stone of Walthamstow Hall was laid back in 1878. With perfect symmetry the trowel used to lay the original foundation stone will be used again on 26 June this year to turn the first piece of soil to mark the start of the new Dining Hall construction.

Goodbye and Welcome As the summer term ends Walthamstow Hall will bid a fond farewell to Head of the Junior School Mrs Penny Austin, who leaves the school after ten very happy years. The new Head of the Junior School, Mrs Diane Wood, together with her two youngest daughters, will join us in September. Mrs Wood is currently Deputy Head Teacher at Spring Grove Prep in Wye.

Teaching Lifeskills supports schools and families to deliver ageappropriate Sex and Relationship Education (SRE)

his local and well-established consultancy, run by health professionals Yoan Reed and Lisa Nix, is connected to national authoritative organisations relating to Child and Youth Health through its core membership with the National Children’s Bureau, NCB. It is working with and supporting several independent schools to help their students gain skills and understanding on all aspects related to growing up.

Most parents are surprised to learn that SRE is not a compulsory part of the National Curriculum, but comes under Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHEE), which is not a statutory subject.

The Science Curriculum contains some biological aspects of human reproduction, but it is up to the discretion of each individual school how the wider aspects of SRE, such as puberty, peer pressure, body image and staying safe, are included in the timetable.

Teaching Lifeskills and Sevenoaks Prep School have worked closely over the last four years to implement tailored programmes of Lifeskills lessons that prepare and safeguard students before they enter life outside the safe environment of a prep school. Sevenoaks Prep School, which prides itself on embracing students and their families holistically, encouraging pupils to be responsible, kind and sympathetic, has recognised and embraced the need for students to gain knowledge and skills relating to growing up. This move not only complements the ethos of the school, but also encompasses what effective SRE should be. It is not just the biological aspects that pupils need to learn about. It is equally important to equip children with skills enabling them to decode messages from what can be a confusing world outside school, and a thorough understanding of their own emotional and physical development. Teaching

Lifeskills says: "When we meet ex Sevenoaks Prep pupils in secondary schools, it is apparent that they have a greater understanding and appear less vulnerable than other children who have had none or very little SRE at their previous schools."

Although schools have an important role in teaching SRE, Teaching Lifeskills recognises that families are the primary educators of SRE and parents often need support in this role.

Lisa from Teaching Lifeskills (herself a mother of three) says: "When parents are empowered to become proactive in this role, they can support their child in building a safe and shared language to talk about their bodies, relationships and health. This is key to enabling young people to discuss their concerns and make good choices as they become more independent."

Teaching Lifeskills run regular Parent Seminars, which inform, equip and empower parents in a variety of topics relating to children and young people growing up.

Yoan from Teaching Lifeskills (also a mother of three) says: "The feedback we get from parents after seminars is that light has been shed on topics relating to SRE in the context of 'family' as well an opportunity to examine their own beliefs and values."

Whatever the family values, whatever the faith, Teaching Lifeskills believes that children and young people have the right to grow up with the knowledge to help them understand their bodies, and the skills to manage all relationships.

Effective Sex and Relationship Education supports young people and equips them with the information, tools and confidence to manage their lives as they move through puberty and adolescence to adulthood.

Rochester Independent COLLEGE Preparing Students For Success

From Year 7 through to Sixth Form, it has been preparing its students for entry to the most competitive universities and courses for almost 30 years. This month Vine caught up with them and their students to discover what makes the college sixth form such a success

ochester Independent College has been helping students prepare for the most competitive university courses since 1984 and boasts an impressive track record of high achievement. They welcome students on two-year A Level programmes and those who transfer into Year 13 (after disappointing AS results elsewhere) and who need to maximise their chances of securing the required university entry grades within the normal two years of sixth form. They also offer intensive one year and A level retake courses.

Rochester Independent College’s track record for entry into the Russell Group and Redbrick universities and for securing students places on competitive courses such as Dentistry, Medicine, Architecture and Law is very impressive. Vine caught up with some of their recent sixth form leavers to hear where they were going and how Rochester Independent had helped them get there.

Aman Chana from Townley Grammar: “A Level results day last year was horrible. I had an offer from St George’s for Medicine and was two grades off.

Instead of just doing A Level retakes I opted to change direction and do oneyear courses in Economics and Further Maths. I considered going back to school but wanted to study somewhere fresh to resit my A Levels that would boost my chances.”

Aman left RIC with A*AA at A Level and was successful in meeting her UCL offer for Economics.

Rosie Geradine came to RIC to retake her A Levels with grades ACD in her A levels from Tonbridge Grammar: “Smaller classes mean more one-to-one help on things you specifically need rather than a group problem.

The teaching is more friendly and less formal. I’m more comfortable in class and more able to ask questions.

Before when I went to talk to a teacher about a problem I felt I was doing something wrong.”

Heading to Leeds University this year is Harry Neilson who after a two year A Level course at RIC will be reading Philosophy: “My GCSE grades from Maidstone Grammar last year were not quite as good as I was expecting, I just didn’t try hard. I could have stayed at school but came to RIC for sixth form to study A Levels in Politics, Philosophy, History and Sociology. This school has invigorated me! The teachers enjoy teaching which has made me become much more of an active participant in lessons. I’ve been helped by the small classes; the teachers are passionate about their subjects and really know their stuff. The most exciting experiences of the year so far have been the trips but specifically the History trip to the Marxist Library in London. It’s the first time I’ve been and it was amazing.”

Kim Wells, director of Teaching and Learning at Caterham, spotted an essential gap within the education sector pointing out that students need to become self-sufficient learners in order to leave school with the confidence to succeed at university and in later life. If students have the ability to think independently with a deep understanding of their own learning styles, it will ensure an all-rounded, confident and prepared individual. Kim believes that too many students are spoon-fed and simply act as the recipients of information rather than really engaging with it.

Caterham is one of the very few schools who have recognised that if they are to prepare students for the adult world, some fundamental changes and shifts in thinking will need to be undertaken. With that in mind, the school has introduced initiatives that are not subjectspecific, but can be applied across all areas of learning.

Caterham uses multiple intelligence testing to find a student’s preferred learning style and has introduced a study skills programme where students cover areas such as lateral thinking, mind maps and learning styles. When exam time approaches, courses are provided that focus on memorising, note-taking, speed reading, examination technique and even dealing with stress.

An extremely successful innovation is the ‘Study Buddy’ scheme in which Sixth Form students volunteer to help younger students in all areas of learning. With over half the school involved in the Study Buddy scheme and 220 sixth formers fully trained in coaching and mentoring, it is a highly successful scheme ensuring pupils can source additional help as well as develop essential life-long skills. Your bathroom should be designed around your own individual style. Matthew Mallinson presents several interesting bathroom ideas to suit you

Chiseled Stone Stone gives an old-fashioned yet modern look to your home, bringing a natural look to the space. Use black stone tiles to make your floor glisten with style and sophistication. Pair these with Tadelakt coated walls and ceilings to give your whole bathroom a stone finish. Tadelakt is a smooth marblelike plaster with a nice sheen that is available in a range of colours; I feel it looks best in a darker shade. A white bath tub will add a sense of freshness to the finished space. Marble is another alternative for floors and walls, giving an intricately grained look to the bathroom. A freestanding bath will give a luxurious touch.

Alternatively try a black granite wash basin, paired with a mostly white motif to give a more modern feel. A great deal of white will also make a smaller bathroom look larger, if size is an issue. If you don’t want to go for a totally stone appearance, mixing it with other natural materials will be best. Try wooden cupboards and shelves with hues that complement your chosen style; teak or oak will work well in lighter rooms while mahogany will suit a dark colour scheme.

Gothic To channel a Tim Burton-esque gothic fantasy world start by either painting the walls black or using black tiles, setting the overall mood. Combine black and silver for a more elegant style. Reds will give the room a vampire-inspired blood effect; dark shades of purple also work quite well to add a bit of colour to a dark mood.

A silver leaf-shaped bathtub will add a glimmer of light; alternatively try a more traditional square bath in black with silver details for a luxury look. For gothic lighting use black chandeliers and sconces. Candles will complete the look but it’s probably better to save these for special occasions. Try skull-shaped, medieval or darkly quirky accessories to complete the look.

Simply modern For a truly modern feel try painting the walls white, using white or silver fixtures. One way to achieve this look is through smooth, sleek features, like a rounded bathtub and wash basin. Alternatively try a more block-shaped approach to give a less arty feel. A walkin shower will make the space look professional, like a high class hotel. If an all-white bathroom sounds dull you can incorporate small details of bright colour into a space, which will work best if one colour is chosen. This can then be used in toilet seat covers, a counter space by the sink or even the waste bin to bring colour to the space.

Large mirrors will look great in either style, giving the illusion of further space as well as appealing to the more vain amongst you.

Natural light looks great in rooms like this, so if possible try a large window. If natural light is not a possibility create a bright space with several LED light fixtures.

Taking as its theme ‘The story behind your food’, the diverse programme includes tours of the farm, sheep shearing, poultry, pigs, pond dipping, a variety of activities for the children, a nature trail, interactive ‘field to fork’ taster sessions – and much

more. In fact, there really is something for everyone.

Produced in Kent and Why Farming Matters in Kent will be represented and both organisations are looking forward to talking to visitors about the excellent work they undertake. A wide range of PCF’s own produce will be on sale and catering will include burgers (locally produced

Let the light in – creative building works in Kent Vine takes the opportunity to meet the partners from SC Services Limited to discuss one of their ongoing projects

S

C Services are a building firm based in Wrotham, catering for a range of clients including County Councils and Network Rail but with a particular focus on luxury, high-end projects that require a high quality of work. They can offer a complete building service from concept, design and architectural planning through to completion, providing a project manager to ensure full attention to detail, timeliness and quality. A family-run business started by Rob Young, they have been working in the sector for nine years and have established themselves as an impressive business with a strapline of ‘Complete Satisfaction – Guaranteed’. Indeed, their business has grown through recommendation and word of mouth rather than advertising.

One of the projects that they are currently working on seems, at first glance, to provide a challenge to even the most creative and innovative of building firms.

However, having recently completed a Grade 2 Listed Building in Goudhurst where they were responsible for a complete refurbishment and extensive landscaping, challenge is the name of the game for SC Services. They are currently undertaking a year’s project that involves removing a two-storey central portion of the previously extended house in order to create a stunning orangery.

This has involved stripping the whole house back to bare walls, rewiring, replumbing and installing underfloor heating.

The finished effect will be phenomenal. Bespoke

handmade windows have been built to specification for installation and where there were the original wooden sash windows, these have been reconditioned. Floors have been raised and the staircase has been taken out in order to replace it with a brand new oak staircase which will be relocated for maximum effect.

A great deal of steelwork has been involved in the rebuilding; for example in excess of ten steel beams have been installed to support the structure of the building and the original portion of the house has been totally reroofed and taken back to the original brickwork.

The front of the building has been removed in its entirety and will be remodelled to create a completely different front elevation. Arches are being built using reclaimed bricks, a combination of marble and wood floors will be laid and all internal doors will be handmade using tulip wood.

In addition to the enormous scope of building work involved, SC Services are installing all the bathrooms and sourcing tiles, bathroom materials, kitchen materials, wood, taps, ironmongery, lighting and sound systems.

Specialist full-time employed tradesmen have been used throughout the whole project to ensure complete satisfaction for the client. Vine can only hope to see the completed project – in the meantime, we can dream.

We wanted a kitchen remodel and a utility room extension. We liked the idea of merging wood finishing with cream details. Our house is quite traditional so we didn’t want it to be too modern, while at the same we wanted it to look interesting. We also needed it to be family friendly.
