This last month has been very exciting for us here at Vine and we’ve reached our fourth birthday! This issue has taken quite a literary and artistic turn, as I was lucky enough to talk to The Times’ art critic Rachel CampbellJohnston about her latest book on the artist Samuel Palmer. Palmer’s idyll was the rolling Shoreham hills and his work has influenced many renowned British artists of the 20th century such as Kent artist John Craxton – there’s a show at The Tate Britain about his work now. We’re lucky to have such beautiful scenery on our doorstep, and even now people are still painting the landscape with the South East Open Studios taking place this June. In the coming months we will lay on a literary feast each issue in the build up to the Sevenoaks Literary Festival in September; we have interviews lined up with Mary S Lovell on her book The Churchills; Jackie Kay, who won the Scottish Book of the Year award for Red Dust Road, and in September we’ll be providing a comprehensive guide to the festival itself – I hope you’re as excited as we are! You may have heard on the grapevine about our new networking event – hazard a guess at the name – which was a great success and it was good to see the faces behind so many of our local businesses. Rafferty’s put on a fantastic spread of canapés and Champagne and Michael Fallon MP spoke emphatically about the importance of supporting our smaller Sevenoaks companies. Read all about it on page 55. We’ll be holding them monthly at different venues, so look out for all our news and updates on Twitter @VineMagazine

Historic mansion on sale for £7.5m

Local gardens open for charity

Italianate mansion Bedgebury is on the market – for a guide price of £7.5 million. The Grade II-listed property in Goudhurst, Kent is currently being used for international schooling. It has been used for educational purposes since 1920, with the school helping over 100,000 students from more than 120 countries every year, but now it is due to close its doors. Director of sales and marketing at Bell Bedgebury International School Will Kinsman said: “Since BBIS opened in 2007 the staff have done a fantastic job and played a vital role in the education of students from over 40 countries.” The estate agent said: “It will appeal to a number of markets given its stature, history, beautiful setting and potential for a variety of uses. “We anticipate strong interest from buyers, not only from the UK but also from oversees and in particular the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) countries that are showing great interest at this time, in not only real estate, but education in the UK.” Bedgebury has a rich history, having first been mentioned in a charter of 814. Vine asked resident Rosemary Cavill, 57, what she thought of the sale: “Bedgebury has been on the market so many times now and has changed hands so often. Who else can afford it but affluent foreigners? It has not proved a success for any of the previous owners.”

Over 20 gardens across Kent and East Sussex are now open to members of the public to A family-friendly festival with music, raise money for the third Hospice in the art, children’s activities, food and Weald Open Gardens scheme. Ferraris! All the proceeds go to Chelsea Flower Show gold medal winner West Heath 2000 charity. Check out Roger Platts will open Leydens, his private our full festival preview on p. 29 garden and nursery on August 7. This year he has added a new kitchen garden, pergolas and a natural-style pond. He will be there on the day to answer questions. Tom Hart Dyke, the renowned plant hunter, will also open his garden, Lullingstone Castle’s World Garden on June 19. He was inspired to create this after he was kidnapped in the Panamanian jungle while on a plant-hunting expedition where he was held for nine months before being released.

Comedy comes to Sevenoaks

Lucky reader scoops iPad

Walthamstow Hall ‘old girl’ Julia Streets (below) is returning to the school in June as part of the Sevenoaks Summer Festival for a one-night-only comedy show – featuring herself and Mrs Moneypenny, star of Channel 4’s SuperScrimpers. Julia told Vine: “This is BOGOF comedy. You get Mrs Moneypenny, who is a business woman, columnist for the weekend Financial Times and has performed a sell-out Edinburgh Fringe show which she took to Broadway. Then you also get me!” By day she is a successful businesswoman and by night, a comedian who draws on her day job for inspiration. The profits from the show go to the charity Children in Crisis, which Julia has supported for a long time. She said: “Education is so important and Children in Crisis raises money to enable children around the world to have access to an education.” Julia’s time at Walthamstow Hall enabled her to try a variety of activities and filled her with a love of drama, comedy and a desire to maintain creative passions. “It is so great to be able to bring the show to Sevenoaks, especially as I remember fundraising for the Ship Theatre which had not yet been built! I will definitely be including material on my time here in the show!” Julia and Mrs Moneypenny will be performing on June 30 at 8pm.

Shirley Shine from Otford was ecstatic after receiving a call from the Mobile Phone Centre to announce that she had won a new iPad. In our March 2011 edition, Vine teamed up with the Mobile Phone Centre, Sevenoaks, to give away the 16GB iPad. “I’ve never won anything in my life,” said Shirley, “apart from £10 on the lottery!” Initially she thought it was a hoax before realising that the call from MPC’s Phil Mitchenall was legitimate. “My husband and I both bought our smartphones from MPC and the service we received was outstanding; they are so helpful and willing to assist with all our questions.” Phil Mitchenall said: “We are delighted Shirley won the competition and as an added bonus she can take advantage of our current offer of £100 cashback for iPad users who take out an airtime contract with us.” n Visit www.sevenoaksmpc.co.uk for more information

Chelsea WATCH OUT

FLOWER SHOW

T

Missed this year’s Chelsea Flower Show? Not to worry – Jacksons Fencing’s show garden initiative has its own celebrity kudos as three new show gardens are unveiled for viewing

he sun shone as brightly on the second official opening of the Jacksons Show Gardens as it did on the first occasion a year ago, as a throng of onlookers watched celebrity TV gardener Joe Swift unveil three new gardens and four revamped show gardens at Jacksons Fencing’s HQ in Ashford in Kent. Joe Swift, a seasoned expert on gardening, chatted to the designers behind this year’s new exhibits, who are all winners of a national design challenge set by Jacksons. The competition invited garden designers from all over the country to demonstrate their creative genius by developing a garden that is environmentally friendly and sustainable. The three winning designs were ‘The Fragrant Front Garden’ by Justine Jobson; ‘The Chill Out Garden’ by Helen Elks Smith and ‘The Paradise Garden’ by Mary Ann Le May. The three new show gardens shared the limelight with last year’s dramatic displays: ‘The Haven’ by Mark Smith; ‘The Float Garden’ by Heather Appleton; ‘The Centred Garden’ by Matthew Childs and ‘Jacksons Goes to the Seaside’ by Philippa O’Brien, which have all been revamped for the 2011 season. The gardens showcase Jacksons and other top-quality

garden suppliers’ products in inspirational show gardens that wouldn’t look out of place at any of the big garden shows. The difference is that Jacksons’ gardens are open to the public, not just for a week like many garden shows, but all year round, allowing visitors who have never had the chance before to see a show garden and find inspiration for their own garden projects. Joe Swift mentioned in his opening speech how important Jacksons’ show gardens project is for the garden design industry and the company’s commitment to raising awareness of designers and quality products. He also commented that Jacksons’ ability to combine everything in an accessible package for everybody to experience was unique in the industry, and how pleased he was to be involved for a second year running. Jacksons’ marketing manager and the person responsible for spear heading the show gardens initiative, Louise Tomlin, said: “I’m delighted we have managed to bring everything together to create an original and exciting display. We now have seven very different gardens for people to visit and, with the Chelsea Flower Show very much in the news at the moment, visitors to the site will have their own small taste of the glamorous world of show gardens without having to go too far to experience it.”

The Times newspaper’s art critic Rachel CampbellJohnston talks to Charlotte Luxford about her new book on the ‘English Van Gogh’, Samuel Palmer. She reveals why Shoreham is such a source of inspiration, that she and Palmer share shepherding experiences and that she would love to hate Tracey Emin’s art WORDS CHARLOTTE LUXFORD

Why did you decide to focus on Samuel Palmer for your first book, Mysterious Wisdom? It was after the British Museum held an exhibition on Palmer as a bicentenary celebration, but it was in a dingy gallery and while I didn’t know much about his life, I loved his work. Few people are in between, they have either heard of Palmer or they haven’t. There was only Rachel one biography on Palmer but it was Campbell-Johnston quite dull, so I decided that something should be done and I wanted to bring him to life. I always found his selfportrait fascinating and I felt quite close to Palmer, carrying poetry in my rucksack and being a shepherd myself; I feel we both shared the same inclination to revel in our own self-conscious romanticism with our flocks of sheep! Did you become increasingly emotionally attached to Palmer’s life the more you found out about him? Yes, I did; I disliked him in the middle of my book as it was his devout piety that practically killed his son he was so strict, but by the end I was crying and I just thought, “What a lovely man you are”. He started so well with his glorious Shoreham scenes and then in the middle of his life he painted somewhat tedious topographical studies, sacrificing his Shoreham beliefs for money – wrongly, unfortunately. Why do you think Shoreham was such a haven for Palmer and his friends the Ancients?

portrait of the artist © ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM, UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD

18 vine June 2011 vinedigital.co.uk

I think the Shoreham landscape with its softly-domed hills, cottages and meadows was the attraction for Palmer; he thought that the church should be the lynchpin to every landscape and it was included in many of his works. He considered the landscape to be very rural and remote and I imagine it would have provided a place where he could imprint his pastoral fantasies. He may well have been inspired by Spenser’s writings on the Darent also. The fact it was walking distance from London, which many of the Ancients relied on for their work, would have been a considerable factor also. What did you make of the area when you first came to Kent; did you find it as inspiring? I spent weeks and weeks in that little valley, and I would lay and daydream as Palmer would have done – I took the 30-mile walk from London and got horrifically lost in Catford with my poor dogs, but once I had reached the lip of the Darent Valley, it all became amazingly beautiful. Do you think Palmer was a ‘great’ artist? Palmer was a first-rate painter and the etchings he did with the help of his son Herbert, who became a renowned etcher in his own right, were a thing of beauty. While Palmer was a great artist he

INTERVIEW was a quiet artist; the etchings he did were kept secret between him and his son in the ‘Curiosity Portfolio’, and while contemporaries like Constable and Turner competed by creating dramatic six-foot landscapes, Palmer was more of a miniaturist. His small and passionate paintings have a sense of focus – by their very smallness they become all the more intense and the harder you gaze, a whole world opens up before your very eyes. While after his death his work remained largely forgotten, he was rediscovered by the English Modernists, who were inspired by his landscapes. In Palmer’s day, many found his works too peculiar, but that’s why the modernists loved it – Graham Sutherland, Paul Nash, John Piper and Eric Ravilious all took inspiration from his work and art historian Kenneth Clark dubbed Palmer the ‘English Van Gogh’.

Did you find the transition from art critic to author difficult, especially now it is your book up for critique?

‘The Magic Apple Tree’

If you had to choose one piece of work from a past artist and one piece from a contemporary artist to hang on your wall, which pieces would you pick? Of course I’d love to have a Palmer; a little memento after writing this book. I’d also have a Rubens just for his sheer ebullience and vitality – his work is like a red bull! It’s not really in my nature to like him actually, but I just do. I adore Francis Bacon’s work; in a way he lived such a pure life and it was uncorrupted in many ways, despite what many say. I have works from my former boyfriend Sebastian Horsley also. If you could go to any place in the world just to sit for an hour, where would you go? I would go to Easter Island – it’s this tiny, lost island with such a sense of wonder about it. Which popular artist would you make a controversial comment about? I’d love to hate Tracey Emin; her work just grabs your attention and it’s like a car crash – you can’t help but stare. What book would you curl up with right now? I love the wisdom and sensibility of George Eliot – her depth and quiet, understated writing is just superb. I would give Middlemarch rather than the Bible to my daughter if I wanted her to understand the way of life.

© TATE, LONDON 2011

Of course I’m nervous – I just hope that all the mistakes have been proofed! I loved writing the book though and I hope people like it; you’re all so lucky to have such a wonderful landscape in Sevenoaks and Palmer was keen to look after it. He said that one should be in harmony with the landscape and to treasure it, treading on it lightly. In a way, he was one of the first ecologists and, in fact, much of his work and letters had green messages.

‘Coming in from evening church’

© ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM, UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD

There are two volumes of Palmer’s letters which I trawled through, but his son destroyed a lot of material. While Herbert was a fierce custodian of his work and published works after his death, he burnt much of Palmer’s personal pocketbooks in a back garden fire, embarrassed by his father’s open expressions of emotion and effeminate tendencies. He said once there was “too much dearest” about the relationship between Palmer and his close friend Richmond. When researching, I steeped myself in the period and reread novelists like George Eliot and Dickens, spent a lot of time daydreaming in Shoreham, visiting locals and also researching in the V&A. Once I knew what to look for I found tiny references in Palmer’s letters – he wrote beautifully – and after a while I began to piece them together to draw the picture of his life. He really was a charming, eccentric, funny, engaging and sympathetic man.

hen talking to customers at the George & Dragon, Chipstead about using local, British ingredients one particular topic always comes up: are the better-known European products really worth the extra food miles? One thing I have learnt over the past year is that if you take just a little time to look you will find British products that certainly give their European counterparts a run for their money. For example, why not swap the Italian Parma ham in your supermarket trolley with a cured British ham from your local farm shop or butchers; I don’t think you will be disappointed. Rosé wine is another great example; in May 2011 a British wine won the only gold award in its category at the International Wine Challenge. That winner was Denbies Wine Estate Chalk Ridge Rosé 2010, based just a few miles from us in Dorking, Surrey. With Kent’s Chapel Down Winery also picking up a gold medal for their sparkling Rosé Vintage Reserve Brut NV, Britain is certainly beginning to silence many international critics. As the month of June heats up and summer really kicks in, demand for one product in particular will begin to soar – ice cream. Ice cream has been around for hundreds of years, but over the last 20 years it has really made a comeback with new brands that focus on handcrafted ranges, with unique flavours Steve walks me and superior, organic Some might ingredients. Some might through the argue that Italy argue that Italy is home milking parlour to to the best ice cream in is home to the the adjacent barn, the world, but if you look best ice cream in a little closer to home in where a group of farm shops, delicatessens the world, but if newly born calves and gastro pubs like you look a little George & Dragon, are busy nuzzling the closer to home, Chipstead you will see their mothers for that champion ice cream champion ice producers are right here milk cream producers on our doorstep. My favourite ice cream are right here on maker is based in the local our doorstep village of Paddock Wood. Taywell Ice Creams was established nearly five years ago by fruit farmer Alastair Jessel. Alastair’s idea originally came about when he was looking for a way to use his surplus fruit crop. Taywell Ice Creams was home to Alastair’s original fruit growing business and also became home to a very successful ice cream business. Over the past four years, demand for Taywell’s ice cream has increased year on year and now it sees Alastair and his team producing many different flavours every week. The success of Taywell has not gone unnoticed, with many of the flavours picking up taste awards along the way. Success is not the only reason I am a fan of this ice cream – Alastair’s passion is also infectious. Alastair is passionate about his product, of course,

but he is also not afraid to listen to his customers. He works with many restaurateurs, chefs, and business owners to create new flavours that even Willy Wonka would be proud of: from the hugely popular honeycomb or raspberry pavlova, (regulars on the menu at the George & Dragon) to the subtle yet exquisite taste of liquorice, lemon meringue and strawberry mascarpone. The vast number of flavours available is not the only thing that sets Taywell Ice Creams apart from its fellow ice cream makers; Alastair uses only pure, local, fresh milk and 40 per cent cream (the next level up from double cream) and egg yolks which make the finished product creamier and smoother. He uses only natural sugars, no artificial additives, colours or stabilisers and only 100 per cent natural fruit. Many cheaper brands achieve the ‘soft scoop’ effect by adding in 250 per cent air, whileTaywell Ice Creams only adds 12 to 15 per cent. Alastair particularly relishes the challenge of creating new flavours for his customers, and during my visit he offers me the opportunity to choose a new flavour to feature on one of our future menus. So while I ponder my new ice cream flavour I’ve decided to add an old pudding classic to the summer menu that will show off some of Taywell Farm’s best flavours – the Knickerbocker Glory. Made with seasonal strawberries, homemade elderflower and mint jelly, cream and topped with generous scoops of damson and sloe gin, lemon meringue pie and maple and pecan ice cream, I’m hoping you will all come to love this ice cream as much as I do.

Ingredients 3 x balls of ice cream (ideally different flavours) Whipped cream Chopped fruit Fruit sauce Jelly Biscuit or wafer for garnish (cherry on a stalk if you want to be really nostalgic) Putting it together Use a tall sundae glass (a long drinks glass or wine glass will also work). Start layering using the jelly and fruit as the base. Add a scoop of ice cream and top with a dab of whipped cream. Then add a drizzle of fruit sauce. Repeat the process until you reach the top of the glass. Finish by adding the whipped cream, a drizzle of sauce and garnish with a cherry, biscuit wafer or whatever you fancy!

SIMPLY STUNNING ICE CREAM

BUCK THE TREND

Local produce and top-quality ingredients are the foundation of Simply Ice Cream’s delicious and award-winning ices. Sally Newall founded the company in 2005 after her ice cream proved immensely popular with clients of her catering business. Sally is based in Ashford and makes the ice cream in small batches, whisking the mix by hand to ensure a smooth, velvety texture. Heavenly Honeycomb Crunch; Dreamy Vanilla; Sublime Strawberry and Divine Chocolate are flavours available all year round. They are hugely popular and are made with superb ingredients such as Madagascan vanilla and Demarquette of Chelsea chocolate. Milk and cream come from the south-east and Sally is very keen to source her fruit

At this time of year, as everyone looks for new and different ideas for the barbecue, there are delicious options available from Chart Farm at Seal. The farm is renowned for its venison, which is incredibly versatile, but it is really worth visiting for their range of topquality cuts of chicken, lamb, pork and beef which are ideal for summer dining. Chart Farm’s homemade free-range pork sausages are really popular and are wonderful served with local chutneys. They are very happy to prepare kebabs to the customer’s specification, combining any meat with a choice of vegetables. The beef is delicious: Chart Farm sells full-flavoured burgers and amazing prime rib-eye steaks, which are proving such a hit with barbecuelovers. The rib-eye steaks are so full of flavour

from local farms, creating special flavours which include Raspberry, Blackcurrant and Apple Crumble. She is also a supporter of CherryAid, which raises awareness about the demise of Kent cherry orchards. A seasonal ice is the refreshing Mango, Lime and Passionfruit, which is perfect for a hot summer’s day. Pick up one of the delicious tubs of ice cream to make a lovely accompaniment to the fresh fruit that is arriving so early this year or just eat it on its own as a real treat! n Visit www. simplyicecream. co.uk or contact 01233 720 922 for more information

and beef versions. His sausages are very popular and include traditional, Cumberland and wild boar and apple. He puts together fresh kebabs or will butterfly a leg of lamb to go straight on the grill. Gary’s love of cookery and food in general is obvious in every conversation. He is always suggesting new ideas; ask him, for example, about his recipe for pork tenderloin! He is a proponent of slow cooking and will give advice on exploring some of the traditional cuts of meat that have slipped out of fashion. He will also go out of his way to stock a particular cut of meat if you request it. Williamsons Butchers is a great place to visit for excellent meat, to arrange a hog or lamb spit-roast for a party and of course, for some helpful, free and friendly advice. n For more information call 01732 453189

WORDS JESSICA HARRIS

To accompany this summer’s wonderful barbecued meats and Kent’s fabulous local cheeses, serve a variety of chutneys from Cley Pickles. Ann Westrop’s friends have always loved her homemade pickles, chutneys and preserves so she started to make and sell from her Tunbridge Wells home in 2004, where she continues to do so today. Her ingredients are sourced from farmers’ markets and local growers: seasonal fruit and vegetables determine what she makes on the day. No artificial additives or preservatives are used. Her products range from traditional to modern recipes and they constantly evolve as Ann tests ideas and is inspired. Best-sellers include delicious Indian chutneys that go well with a curry or jazz up a selection of cold meats. One of Ann’s favourites is the brinjal aubergine chutney that is sweet and spicy. Other popular

products are strawberry and raspberry jams and also apple, tomato and apricot chutney and plum chutney, which go well with a sharp and tangy cheddar. In 2007, Ann won a gold star at the Great Taste Awards for her horseradish mustard. This condiment is always a favourite with customers who love it alongside roast beef or with smoked fish. These chutneys, pickles, marmalades and jams offer a taste of the freshest local fruit and vegetables, preserved in such a way that they provide amazing accompaniments to meals and can be enjoyed all year round. n Find Cley Pickles at Shipbourne farmers’ market. OF

The annual county show will once again hear the roar of Kent’s glorious Spitfire, flying over the airfield that was once home to many Spitfire squadrons. Robin Brooks reveals the county’s strong association with the aircraft that helped saved our country

I

n 1941 a cheque for £5,000 received by the then-president of the Association of Men of Kent and Kentish Men, Lord Cornwallis, gave birth to a Spitfire squadron that would become the envy of every other county in Great Britain. This ‘gift of war’ became known as No. 131 (County of Kent) Fighter Squadron. This was the first instalment towards the purchase of ‘The Invicta Flight of Spitfires’. Following a meeting of the War Emergency Committee, it was decided that Kent would follow other counties and set up the Kent County Spitfire Fund. The idea fired the imagination of the good people of Kent and soon after the announcement, towns in the county were in competition with each other to see who could raise the greatest amount of money. Shortly after, £29,370 was collected, enough to buy three aircraft, aptly named ‘Man of Kent’, ‘Kentish Man’ and ‘Fair Maid of Kent’. By March 1941, the funds raised came to £67,677 and in November it had risen to £100,000 – enough to buy an entire squadron of Spitfires. Receiving a letter from the President of Aircraft Production, Lord Cornwallis published it in the Kent Messenger newspaper. It read: “We are very pleased that the County of Kent has been successful in achieving sufficient money to pay for a full

fighter squadron. This will be the County of Kent Squadron, and Kent will be the first county as usual to have a squadron named after it.” With the formation of the squadron at Ouston, it went on to achieve many successful missions against an overwhelming Luftwaffe. Each aircraft carried the name of a Kent town emblazoned alongside the cockpit. Gravesend Shrimp, Yeoman of Kent, Fair Maid of Kent, Royal Tunbridge Wells and many others became well known at many airfields around the south of England. Strangely, the squadron was never based at any of the Kent airfields although it became a familiar sight at Sussex bases. Disbanded at the end of the war, the squadron was never revived in peacetime but its battle honours linger on in the history books. Today’s ‘Spirit of Kent’ is an Mk 9 Spitfire, which was one from an order for 1884 Mk 9s dated April 1944. It was rolled out of Castle Bromwich and was posted initially to No. 183 Squadron based at Chilbolton on June 24. Moving to No. 234 Squadron at Bentwaters, it was placed in storage until 1949 when it was sold to the South African Air Force. It served with them for many years before being scrapped with its remains lying in the South African outdoor storage facility. The airframe was brought back to the UK and eventually went to a company called Airframe Assemblies on the

Isle of Wight where the aircraft was rebuilt and purchased by Peter Monk of Pembury. TA805 ‘Spirit of Kent’ flies in memory of the Kent squadron and the county is still the only one to have its own Spitfire. The ‘Prancing Horse of Kent’ is also emblazoned on the fuselage with the emblem of Kent, ‘Invicta’, meaning unconquered. Based at Biggin Hill, this iconic aircraft can be seen flying at many Kent-based occasions including this year’s county show. It is also used for educational purposes, allowing the youth of today to get up close and personal to an aircraft that perhaps their grandfathers or great-grandfathers either worked on or flew in combat.

Knole has recreated a 300-year-old scent to fill its showrooms this year. Lady Betty’s pot pourri has been recreated from a recipe first written down by Lady Elizabeth Germain. She was a long-term guest at Knole in the early eighteenth century and the pot pourri has been placed in bowls to fill the air with the scent of Double violets, Rose leaves, Lavender, Myrtle flowers, Verbena, Bay leaves, Rosemary, Balm Musk, Geranium, Cinnamon, Mace, Nutmeg and Pepper and Lemon peel pounded. The pot pourri has been recreated by perfume historian Stephen Nelson (www.darasina.co.uk) using the traditional moist method, where the ingredients are layered and fermented inside a jar – literally, rotten pot.

Take the rare opportunity to discover the unseen rooms, galleries and attics of Knole on this exciting and exclusive guided tour, Tuesday 28 and Wednesday June 29, 7pm– 8.30pm. Tickets £25. There’s a growing trend for entrepreneurial ventures, and as specialist ceramic and glass shop The Chinaman sells its wares, there is now the chance to become your own boss with this exciting business opportunity

T

here is a growing trend for becoming an entrepreneur – you only have to watch programmes like The Apprentice and Dragon’s Den to see that and you don’t even need to look any further than Vine magazine – the publisher set it up from his bedroom. While owning your own business can be hard work, the pros of doing so can exceed the cons of slaving away for somebody else. Janette Copp and Yvonne Stewart have both experienced not only financial gain during their ownership of The Chinaman in Sevenoaks, but also deep friendship, community spirit and the benefits of being able to support local charities. The Chinaman in Sevenoaks High Street is now on the market, following around 40 years of memories, investment and progress, but after their 11-and-a-half-year tenure, Janette and Yvonne are ready to hand over an already-thriving shop and online business to someone who has the potential to develop it further. Janette said: “It’s a lifestyle business and it’s great to be a real part of the Sevenoaks community; we work with schools and charities and profits have risen consistently. We know there’s the potential to really take it further, and also in many different directions, but we didn’t want to be doing it for another five years. It’s been a Lladro figurine, Passionate Tango

huge learning curve, especially the internet side of things, but we’re ready to step back and let someone else, preferably more internet savvy and possibly younger, take the business to the next level.” The shop stocks top-quality glass and ceramics from Lladro, Portmeirion, Dartington, Waterford Group and Moorcroft and the new owner has the opportunity to maintain well-established relationships with these top names in the industry as well as acquiring a healthy customer database. As a niche business, a large majority of the products stocked are sold exclusively in Sevenoaks from The Chinaman, with little competition in the area. The Chinaman is in a prominent position, with a shop front very visible to those driving into town and has good relationships with the strong surrounding businesses. Anyone wanting to start quickly would acquire the top-quality purpose built shop fittings as part of this bargain deal, and of course the well chosen current stock is available to purchase at cost. Yvonne and Janette are keen to support anyone who wants to take on the business and would consider a staggered payment plan if necessary. The new owner will be able to negotiate a fresh lease. n www.thechinaman.co.uk www.lladro.thechinaman.co.uk For more information about this exciting business opportunity, call 01732 454937 or email info@ thechinaman.co.uk

Microsports: fun for children and parents!

n Jane Noble from the Sev enoaks Microsports group talks to Vine about the importanc e of learning through phy sical activity: What does Microsports offer? It is a wonderful opportuni ty for pre-school children to experience a wide range of sports including footba ll, cricket, basketball and tennis. It offe rs sessions throughout ter mtime for toddlers accompan ied by parents or guardians and unaccompanied classes for three to four year olds. Is there much emphasis on competition? I make sure there is a balanc e between team sports and individual games to allow the children to find someth ing they enjoy. Many games do not focus on winning and inst ead have more educational aspects, like learning colour s or sto ry-telling. Do the adults enjoy the clas ses as much as the childr en? Yes, they do! It is great to see the children relishing the chance to play these different games with real enthusiasm as well. I hav family members. The adults show e grandparents who love joining in with the activities! What are the most reward ing parts of your job? The best par t of my job is seeing the children joining in, progressing and gaining in confidence. Have you any advice for ways to entertain children at home? Just take a leftover paper par ty-plate; get the childre n to paint it or colour it in; attach a pie ce of cardboard to the bac k to form a strap then use as a bat wit h a balloon indoor s on a rainy day! n Visit www.micro-sport .co.uk for more informatio n. WELLNESS

BACK YOUR HEALTH with OSTEOPATHY Do you have neck or back pain? Opting for a quick-fix solution doesn’t solve the problem in the long run and professional help isn’t always expensive, says Charlotte Luxford Many of us suffer from neck, shoulder and back pain at some point, but most will opt to have a one-off massage or pop a few pills and try to forget about it. However, this doesn’t solve the pain, as Michelle ChalmersStevens of MECS Osteopathy explains. “It’s a common misconception that osteopaths just deal with the spine, but I prefer to work holistically, treating the whole body to prevent as well as cure,” says Michelle. Another issue that may put people off having treatment is money; however, Michelle’s treatments are reasonably priced and she offers a loyalty scheme whereby the fourth treatment is half price after the first

Magic hands: Michelle Chalmers-Stevens works holistically to aid recovery three sessions. She will also give you advice to aid a speedy recovery with useful exercise tips. The most common problem, says Michelle, is neck, shoulder and lower back pain. “It’s usually to do with things like manual labour and heavy lifting, not sitting correctly at your desk and sports. I use soft tissue mobilisation

and manipulation of the joints, which after around four or five treatments will decrease pain, increase mobilisation and make clients feel a lot more active.” Former client Georgina Bennett said: “I was unable to lie flat due to severe neck and back pain; Michelle’s treatments effectively relieved my symptoms and I can now sleep at night. Michelle offers expert treatment and a professional service – I’d recommend her to anyone.” Michelle suggests that you set up your office ergonomically so that you are sitting correctly at your desk and that you stretch often, such as bringing your knees up to your chest alternately and walking every so often to get away from your desk. Michelle also suggests that you don’t overdo it while gardening, a common cause of back pain at this time of year. Michelle’s business was set up shortly after qualifying from the

European School of Osteopathy and she is also registered with the General Osteopathic Council. Michelle is located in the tranquil village of Kemsing with plenty of free parking, avoiding busy towns and traffic. n Visit www. mecsosteopathy.co.uk or call 07946 336707

STRESS-FREE DENTISTRY FOR FAMILIES Vine speaks to the new member of team at Atkinson Brignall, Dr Makbule Ogretme (aka Mac) about caring for nervous children and how she plans to make visits to the dentist less stressful and more enjoyable How did you get into paediatric dentistry? I qualified in Turkey in 1997 and first worked as an associate dentist and ran my own clinic before deciding to move into the field of paediatric dentistry. After a successful six years of research and practice, I gained my PhD degree. Now, I am one of the members of teaching staff at King’s College Paediatric Dentistry Department, where I teach undergraduate students. How do you feel about joining Atkinson Brignall? I have found that we all work really well together because we share the same ethos, which is

focusing on the quality of patient care. I have always dedicated myself to quality dental care, having a special interest in preventive dentistry, cosmetic dentistry and forensic dentistry. Patient care and satisfaction are of paramount importance in my daily practice. What do you feel you bring to the Atkinson Brignall team? I pride myself on being capable of helping nervous patients feel at ease. I would like to help them change their negative view of the dental treatment. Our children’s Aquabubble helps provide the best environment for that. How do you make nervous patients feel at ease, especially children? Many people prefer to see the dentist as little as possible. I fully understand this and enjoy working with nervous patients and especially children. I find treating children rewarding and I especially try to make the children’s first visit as relaxing and enjoyable playing with them and showing how my big chair works as a lift!

How should parents encourage their children to look after their teeth? Parents have the primary responsibility for teaching their children how to look after their teeth and gums. They can encourage the healthy practice of brushing by offering the toothbrush to the child. Children have poor manual dexterity and will not brush properly without the help of the parents. Therefore, it is very important to supervise them. Children copy what adults do, so seeing parents brushing their teeth twice a day and visiting their dentist regularly will also help.

What do you enjoy most about being a paediatric dentist? It is fantastic to see the joy in the eyes of a child who has had an enjoyable experience. I love being a paediatric dentist and I’d like to help parents raise healthy, happy children.

of the month DETAILS Map: OS Explorer 147 Sevenoaks & Tonbridge Start & finish: St Giles’ Church, Shipbourne Distance: 3 km Time: Just over 1 hour Grade: Easy with one hill How to get there: Just off the A227, where there is parking opposite The Chaser Inn on Upper Green Road

T

his is a lovely, easy walk that starts near The Chaser Inn at Shipbourne, goes to the 14thcentury Ightham Mote and then back. The views from the walk are constantly changing. In spring you see magnificent displays of bluebells in the woods while the short climb up the hill rewards you with great panoramas all year round. Combine the walk with tea or coffee at Ightham Mote: the café is closed Tuesdays and only opens for certain days in the autumn and winter, so check the website before you set out. It is also lovely to stop for a meal at The Chaser upon your return. This allows you to take in two of the best aspects of Kent: great food and amazing countryside! Bear in mind that this walk gets rather muddy in wet weather. n This walk follows most of the ‘Greensand Way’ indicated path. Go through the church gate and walk for 50 metres through the churchyard with St Giles’ Church on your left n At the bottom of the graveyard, go through the kissing-gate, walk straight ahead onto a wide, grassy path with crops on your left and the hedge on your right. Do NOT go left by the trees at the stone wall n Go straight forward for 200m. The footpath appears to go straight on across another field Sheep graze in Shipbourne

of crops; do NOT take this but turn right after the hedge and continue with the crops on your left for another 200m n At the bottom of this field you will see a hard track leading straight on to the Shipbourne Cricket Club pavilion. Do NOT follow this track but immediately after stepping onto it, look left and across the field to see a yellow marker-post slightly uphill about 350m away at the entrance to South Seers Wood. Follow the grassy path next to the trees on your left before aiming for the stile at the entrance to the woods n Go over the stile and follow the fenced path through the woods for about 250m n Cross another stile and follow the edge of the field for 100m up to Mote Road on your left (you will see a group of trees in the middle of this field on your right) n Carefully join Mote Road by the gate, turn right and continue along the road for 150m to the path on the right that leads to Ightham Mote. Walk down here for 100m and the Ightham Mote tea rooms are on your left n Go back the way you came. DENTISTRY WITH A DIFFERENCE Your dental appointment isn’t something you’d expect to look forward to, unless you visit the innovative Dental Spa, Westerham, says Charlotte Luxford

I

’ve never had a soothing hand massage when I’ve been to my dentist, nor would I expect to of course, but the Dental Spa, Westerham do things a little differently. As a new patient (who hasn’t visited a dentist for six years!) I am a little apprehensive, but it turns out this is the perfect place for calming nerves. As you walk into their light and beautifullydecorated reception area it’s like walking into your living room, yet you are greeted with a smile and the offer of a drink (something you might not get at home). Beni Jacob BDS MSc FDSRCS, the principal dentist and owner of

the practice, shows me into one of two hi-tech surgeries and invites me to relax into the chair where we talk through my anxieties and also my medical history. After I disclose all my fears and past encounters, I feel at ease; clients aren’t rushed here. Once examined, Beni tells me my teeth are in relatively good condition, but recommends I see the practice hygienist to maintain the health of my gums. When I ask how often she recommends clients visit the dentist, she says that it depends on numerous factors and at the dental spa recommended guidelines are followed. Beni believes in treating each patient as an individual with unique needs and that I would probably only need a yearly visit. Beni takes a positive attitude towards dentistry focusing on prevention. At the end of the visit you are given a personalised treatment plan, which draws attention to problems and recommended treatments, but you’re not pressured to act on them. After my examination I receive a

complimentary hand massage from therapist Beth Roxburgh, something on offer to all new patients, using British organic ESPA products. She offers a whole range of treatments, from massages to manicures so you can use the Spa facilities even if you don’t need a dental check-up. To try out the spa, it’s worth enquiring about their exclusive pamper evenings this month, where you and three friends can enjoy a drink, light bites and a spa treatment each, for just £10 a head. As far as trips to the dentist go, I think this one would be incredibly hard to beat.

Solar Health

with Jackie Reader

IS CANDIDA AFFECTING YOUR HEALTH? Sometimes we feel we’re not at ‘our best’ but can’t pinpoint the issue and neither can our doctor – have you ever considered it could be candida? Jackie Reader from Solar Health explains what candida is and its symptoms Candida albicans is a singlecelled yeast (similar to fungus) that is just one of several hundred species of microorganisms living in your gut. Normally candida poses no threat to your health, and is kept in check by beneficial gut bacteria, but when the balance of your natural ‘gut flora’ becomes upset (due to poor diet, medication or prolonged stress among other things), candida can run riot through your body. In your gut, candida ferments sugary foods to produce carbon dioxide, which causes bloating and flatulence. As it spreads through your body, candida also produces increasing quantities of toxic by-products, which can cause a host of physical and mental symptoms. Candida first grows in the gut as a fungus, creating an environment which allows it to thrive at the expense of some important dietary functions, including absorption of

nutrients and digestive enzyme impairment. This leads to malabsorption of vitamins and minerals, essential for a huge number of chemical processes in a healthy body and causing imbalances in the gut flora. There are a host of symptoms that can give an indication of a candida infection. Even healthy people will suffer from one or two of these during a lifetime (which would not indicate an infection), but if you can identify a good number that have been troublesome and/or long term, then it may well indicate an infection of candida albicans. At Solar Health Clinic it is now possible to test for candida with CanDia5®, an immunochromatographic test kit that accurately detects circulating antibodies specific to a current or recent candida infection. With only one drop of fingertip blood, this test detects antibodies to the four most common species of candida.

SEVENOAKS OPEN EVENING Vine visits Sevenoaks Veterinary Surgery for their open day of puppy training, mock-ops and prizes...

L

ast month Sevenoaks Veterinary Surgery held its first year anniversary open evening and what a fantastic evening it was! Both clients and the public came along to enjoy an evening of tours, talks, raffles and much more. The surgery was able to raise a brilliant £80 for the RSPCA from the raffle and members of staff were on hand to give people tours of the practice. There were also representatives available to give advice to owners about different exercise and food regimes best suited to their pet. Gill, who runs the puppy classes at the surgery, was also available to offer advice on behaviour and training! Mock operations were set up in each room so that people could get a clear insight into what happens behind the scenes during each procedure and what kind of equipment is used. All in all it was a great success and they are looking forward to holding another open day at its sister practice Meopham Veterinary Surgery, later this year.

BATHROOM TRENDS

Quintessentially British

Vine brings you a selection of the hottest bathroom trends for your home this summer. Whether you like the British antiquarian look or sleek, streamlined bathrooms, we have something for everyone

MODERN

Victoriana

Nautical The modern look is about clean lines and streamlining your bathroom – perfect for smaller bathrooms. Sinks on top of console units are popular; Dolphin’s ‘Genoa’ basin vanity unit in cream and their matching tower unit is a great space-saver. Visit www. dolphinbathrooms. co.uk

Cath Kidston has taken the world by storm with her fabulous floral prints and these work well in the bathroom. Think duck egg blue, English roses and crisp white. Use ‘Pale Duck Egg’ from Laura Ashley’s new paint collection and tie in with accessories such as this ‘Bathe’ sign (Laura Ashley, £20) and Cath Kidston’s ‘Rose’ towelling collection (from £16). Visit www.lauraashley.com and www.cathkidston.co.uk

Nautical is a fun and clean way to introduce bold colour into a bathroom – we love this boat from John Lewis (£20), which works nicely with Rebecca Lardner’s playful coastal scene, ‘Seaside Stories I’, from Sevenoaks Art Shop (£270). You can’t go wrong with nautical stripes – try Laura Ashley’s ‘Porter Stripe’ blind in ‘Marina Blue’ (£30 per metre). Visit www. sevenoaksartshop.co.uk and www.johnlewis.com

BATHTIME FOR Trying to get your nippers into the bath should be less taxing with these bath-time treats: Hooded towels: Wrap up your bundle of joy in these cotton ‘Cuddle ‘n’ Dry Hooded Towels, suitable from birth. £12 for a pack of three. www.mothercare.com

Heritage bathrooms with their high ceilings, chequered marble tiles and luxurious rolltop baths provide that look of luxurious elegance that never dates. Try Dolphin’s ‘Shropshire’ bath and their black and white floor tiles to complete the Victoriana look. Go to Sevenoaks High Street’s branch for information or visit www.dolphinbathrooms.co.uk

Colourful soaps: Bath creamers and colourful hand-cut soaps make baths fascinating and colourful – and smell lovely! www.myrrhgifts.co.uk Bath crayons: This five-pack of bath crayons is great for interactive play in the bath and encourages creativity and hand-eye coordination www.mothercare.com

FIND YOUR PERFECT FIT If you want freedom in your choice of bathroom, but expert advice so as to avoid costly mistakes, look no further than Sevenoaks Bathrooms. Vine gets some top tips and finds out what makes this small company unique

H

onesty can be a difficult thing to obtain when buying a bathroom, but Sevenoaks Bathrooms is a truly reliable and sympathetic company that offers you the freedom to get what you actually want. Stephen Holmes and his small team of expert fitters will ‘hold your hand’ through the process; whether you’ve sourced your own bathroom or need to start from scratch, they can tell you what will honestly work for your space. “Many make the mistake of buying pieces from showrooms without being told vital information about things

like water pressure, or whether the items will actually fit the space intended for them,” said Stephen. “I pride myself on looking well ahead to avoid petty issues that could drive you mad in the future, like a shower head that drips on you when you’re in the bath!” Stephen can advise people on where to source their own suite, so there’s no pressure to buy everything from Sevenoaks Bathrooms. Sevenoaks Bathrooms also specialises in creating easy-to-use bathrooms for the more mature client without compromising on looks, as can be seen in this recently fitted room in a retirement cottage in Frant, where the bath has been replaced with an easy-access, maintenance-free walkin shower. One client commented on Sevenoaks Bathrooms’ work: “We have been really impressed with the work done – thank you for finding us such efficient and pleasant workmen. The result is gorgeous!”

FIVE TOP TIPS Check whether it will work: Not everything you like will necessarily fit and rehandling charges can be very expensive Water (usually) has to run downhill: A waste water pump can be noisy and unsightly, but water must run downhill, so consider the exit point of your waste pipes Check if you have high or low pressure: Many modern taps require high water pressure; a combination boiler should have high pressure and a loft tank is usually low Think about bathroom furniture: Though not cheap, it gives a room essential storage space and provides easy cleaning

n For a free consultation, call 07958 256358 or visit www.sevenoaksbathrooms.co.uk

Consider stone vs ceramic tiles: Natural stone and porcelain is more expensive to work with and often requires maintenance. Ceramic could save you time and money

ust over a year ago, the general election produced an unexpected coalition. For the first time since 1940 two parties came together in government. It’s been a learning process all round. Conservative and Liberal Democrat ministers have had to compromise. Conservative supporters have had to accept that, though there is a Conservative Prime Minister at No.10, this isn’t a Conservative government. The backdrop has been alarming: Portugal went bust last month, the fourth European country to do so after Iceland, Greece and Ireland. Around the world governments have to live within their means and tackle the mountain of public and private debt that accumulated during the boom years. Our government has to take some very tough decisions in order to preserve our credit rating and to avoid those debts falling harder on our children. But the picture isn’t at all bleak. There have been job losses in the public sector. But the private sector has added some 400,000 jobs over the past year and is forecast to keep on growing. There are cuts to some local

budgets. Kent Police are losing some £50 million but have confirmed that there will be no reduction in the quality or quantity of policing around Sevenoaks. In fact, they will increase the number of officers on neighbourhood patrol. Nor has capital spending stopped. More money has been found for pothole repairs and the Department of Education has agreed to cough up £17 million for the rebuild of the new Knole Academy. Work should start by the end of this year. One underestimated benefit of tighter budgets is that managements have to think harder. Back office services can be shared between public authorities. New ways of working can improve the service offered to the public. Take the police counter at the district council office in Sevenoaks. Since the chief constable opened it last September, more people have used it than those who used to go to the little police office in Buckhurst Avenue. It’s a small thing but a portent of smarter, more responsive public services to come. For more information visit www.michaelfallon.org.uk

GOLF

Here’s our guide to the Academy and Full memberships at Knole Park and membership details of Sevenoaks Town Golf Club who also play on this historic golf course

THE CLUB Looking to join a golf club? Why not join one suitable for the experienced, and perhaps not so experienced, members of your family? At Knole Park Golf Club there is something for all abilities n Knole Park Golf Club is one of the finest clubs in the south-east of England. The course, set out within the grounds of the Knole Estate, can rightfully be described as a natural layout. The course designer, J A Abercromby, used the natural contours of the land to produce a challenging course in all weather conditions and throughout all the seasons. n www.knoleparkgolfclub.co.uk

We ask our own Academy member, marketing executive Nic Lapham, what he makes of his Academy membership so far: Why did you decide to join Knole Park Golf Club? Knole Park is beautiful and to have a golf club in its grounds is fantastic. The course is challenging and the members are very friendly and welcoming. What do you find are the benefits to the Academy membership? The value of the Academy membership is incredible, especially for such a well-known and respected club and the service from the pros is unbelievable – I’ve had two one-toone lessons out of the six so far and already my golf has improved dramatically. I really enjoy attending my lessons as the club are extremely helpful and I love the fact that I have constant access to the driving range. I’ve also got a series of small group lessons which I’m looking forward to as there will be players of a similar standard I can play on the course with. Would you recommend the Academy membership? Honestly for £365, if you like sport or haven’t played golf for a while and want to get back into it, there isn’t a better place to join. Would you take up the full membership in the future? The only thing that would stop me joining Knole as a full member is if I move from the area which is unlikely to happen as I live and work here, so yes I can’t wait! n Knole Park Golf Club shares its play of the course with the historic Sevenoaks Town Golf Club, set up originally on the instruction of Lord Sackville in the 1920s to allow the ‘working folk’ of Sevenoaks the opportunity to play this much-loved sport. They have a very limited membership and operate from a separate clubhouse. n www.sevenoakstowngolfclub.com

GRAPEVINE

Vine’s brand new monthly networking event, Grapevine, launched with a bang last month, as local businesses gathered at Rafferty’s Café to enjoy a buzzing evening of Champagne, canapés and connections

S

evenoaks businesses flocked to Rafferty’s Café for the launch of Vine’s inaugural networking event at the end of May, and what a success it was! Despite some torrential downpours, the intimate venue was packed to the rafters with a selection of around 30 different businesses who enjoyed Champagne and canapés from the café and Deli On The Lane in a relaxed environment. The Grapevine networking event has been set up as a monthly, informal gathering for local businesses where they can interact with each other on a live level and share their connections, as Vine Publishing Director Owen Hunnam explained in his speech. “Due to the deep relationships with have developed with hundreds of businesses across Sevenoaks, we have been passing business between our clients for years,” he said. “So it seemed a natural evolutionary step to take this to a live format, allowing them to interact and meet in a short, sharp and friendly networking environment. We’re hoping Grapevine will become the hottest networking event in town.” Guest of honour Michael Fallon MP stressed the importance of success in small businesses in his talk. He commented: “I am constantly amazed to see in the smaller corners of my constituency, just how many businesses are just getting on with things and doing incredibly well selling their services around the world.” The event was well received by the delegates involved and many commented on the venue, its relaxed environment and, of course, the food! Photographer Russell Harper said: “What I like about the Grapevine networking event is the pace; it’s nice for a busy business person to be able to get around and hand out business cards quickly – a bit like speed dating really! As a self-employed person it’s important to have an outlet for talking to other businesses and this has been perfect for it.” n Next month’s Grapevine will be held at The White Hart in Brasted. For an invite, more images, a video of the event and to find out more, catch us on Twitter @VineMagazine, call Vine on 01732 760823 or check www.vinedigital.co.uk

READERS’ PETS

I wanted to write and thank you for putting together such a lovely article on Riverhill. We were absolutely thrilled with both the text and the stunning photographs. Lots of our visitors have commented that they have seen the article. Thank you for including us in the magazine – we are very grateful. It is also quite amazing how news travels. Our garden designer lives in Cornwall and he has just emailed to tell me: “What a small world, my wife, Frances, treated your old postman in Minor Injuries in Falmouth recently

Here at Vine we love our pets and we know you do too! To see your pet featured, send in your photos to: chris@onlinevine. co.uk or if you want to send in a poem or a letter send it to: charlotte@ onlinevine.co.uk

SECO INTER ND VIEW Camilla Al Fayed

IS THIS YOU? Bridget drinking from the tap NAME: Bridget the cat (named after Bridget Jones!) OWNER: Sally Beesley LIKES AND DISLIKES: Bridget loves company, attention, sleeping in front of the Aga, sitting on the bird table watching the birds for hours, drinking from the tap and tuna. She hates being left on her own and sits on the lawn facing away from Sally, sulking!

If this is you in the high street on 23 May 2011, send us a copy of your photo ID and you’ll win 2 tickets to a film at The Stag Theatre. If you know who it is, tell them so they don’t miss out! Available until 04/07/11

Camilla is patron of Lawnfest, the music and arts festival which raises money for the New School at West Heath on Sunday June 12 What are you working on at the moment? I am organising Lawnfest at the New School and am involved with other charities including the Evelina Children’s Hospital, children’s hospices CHASE and Shooting Star. What motivates you? The children at the school and the desire to see them have a good time at the festival. What in particular are you looking forward to at Lawnfest? I am looking forward to the last hour when all the planning has paid off and I can let my hair down and relax! There should be some local food too which will be great. What makes you happy? My child Luna and family time. What is your favourite memory? Having my baby Luna: I’ve blocked out the painful bits!

FAVOURITE TREAT: Every morning she absolutely loves to be given a small amount of porridge while Sally has breakfast.

What is your most treasured possession? Well Luna is not really an object but it would have to be her!

A WORD FROM THE OWNER: She is a wonderful, loving cat with one slightly odd habit! Many cats hate water but Bridget refuses to drink from her bowl and will sit by the tap until someone obliges and turns it on for her. She then tests it with her paw, presumably to check if it is hot or not!

What is the best piece of advice you have been told? Never give up.

Where is your favourite place in Kent? I love to be at the New School: it has a great atmosphere and it is wonderful to see these children thriving in a safe place.
