I need to learn.” Serving creates a hunger to learn what is essential for growth. Service is essential for connecting with a church. Erwin McManus, who pastors Mosaic Church in Los Angeles, wrote a book some years ago titled An Unstoppable Force. He said, “A person who attends, but does not begin to serve, will drop out within a year. One can ponder all the research… on how to assimilate… new believers in the Body of Christ, but it comes down to one simple variable, if people begin to serve, they stick. If they don’t they won’t.” People deepen relationships not only by sitting in a circle in

giving and benevolence, Scrooge becomes more buoyant, more effervescent, until we find him dancing in the streets and laughing. By serving and giving he became the most generous man in England, and the happiest. Psychologists talk about “helpers’ high.” Acts of helping measurably boost a person’s happiness. Medical studies suggest that as a person cultivates healthy emotions through self-forgetful activities and giving, they actually prevent aging at the cellular level. For example, there was an early study done some 30 years ago comparing retirees who volunteered with those who did not volunteer. Volunteers scored significantly higher

volunteers and large church events. As circumstances changed, she would hand roles off or take new ones on. “I am so grateful for the amazing opportunity I have had to learn, grow, and serve in so many different capacities and to be entrusted with much,” says Joanne. Senior Pastor Rich Nathan has known Joanne a long time. “When someone on staff suffered a loss, it was usually Joanne who offered words of comfort and arranged meals or care. When the staff came together to celebrate, Joanne planned the celebration. If the staff needed a staff retreat, again it was Joanne who planned it from beginning to end.” Pam White has worked with Joanne since 1998. She agrees with Rich. “She has been so kind to us as a staff. Anything she’s planned for [us], Joanne puts in 150%. She thinks of the staff first and always has,” Pam says with a smile. Craig Heselton, Executive Pastor of Vineyard Columbus, has been friends with Joanne for 42 years, including as her supervisor for the last 16. “Joanne has a selfless work ethic,” shares Craig. “She’s always been ready and willing, even at personal sacrifice, to work long hours to support the needs of the church and staff. As a supervisor, she understood that the buck stopped with her, using

Approaching retirement has given Joanne a chance to look back on the evolution of the church and see God’s faithfulness. The idea of worshipping alongside, serving, and having fellowship with people who are different from one another racially, economically, and culturally has been there from the early years. “I believe it was birthed in our DNA as a church way back when,” says Joanne. “So many people have extended their hands to thousands in showing the love of Jesus by offering spiritual, emotional, and physical care in Columbus and even beyond through church plants and missions. The vast diversity in the church reflects the Kingdom of God and has shown our doors and hearts are open wide.” Now that the time has come to move on, the Lord has given her excitement and anticipation for her next chapter. She is approaching it as a sabbatical of sorts—a time of seeking God, listening, and waiting on his lead for what’s next. At work, everyone will greatly miss her. Pam White shares, “She is the kindest person that I’ve ever met here at the Vineyard. I appreciate her and love her, and it will never be the same here without her. It will still be good, but it just won’t be the same.”

People on staff trust her wisdom, her patience, her godliness.” He continues, “To me, Joanne has been a loyal friend, a wise advisor, an incredibly hard-working staff member, and always an enthusiastic supporter of me and the church. The church would not be what it has become without Joanne’s decades of faithful service.” As with any growth, there have been some growing pains and

Joanne sums it up well: “It’s been a wonderful, life-giving honor to be a small part of the huge work the Lord has done and is doing. I am thankful for the many people who have led, taught, and helped me along the journey.” With tears filling her bright, blue eyes, she continues. “I see what God’s done in us, and through us, and in spite of us. He is so gracious to use ordinary people, often in unexpected ways. I’m excited for the future of Vineyard Columbus as we all continue to follow him!”
