This June, during Recognition Weekend, hundreds of our youth will be celebrated as they pass into new phases of their schooling. As fifth graders pass to middle school, eighth graders to high school, and seniors to college and beyond, we get the opportunity to gather around our young people and celebrate their achievements. In honor of this upcoming weekend, three of Vineyard Columbus’ most exceptional youth shared their stories.

Wahome is a fifth grade student who leads in KidzQuest. Wahome has helped Pastor Mike teach on several occasions and has recently begun helping lead worship. Wahome began serving in third grade, where he did acting during the service. As he got older, he got more involved in KidzQuest services. He taught a lesson alongside Pastor Mike when he was in fourth grade and was hooked. “Preaching is a lot of fun and every time I’ve done it, I’ve learned something,” Wahome said. By teaching, Wahome has become more confident in serving. Because he has now helped teach twice, he isn’t afraid to serve publicly and believes he, could bring his talents to the table anywhere in the church. In the future, Wahome is interested to continue teaching and doing more public speaking to teach other kids about Christ. As he goes into middle school in the fall, Wahome wants to get more involved in leading worship by playing his guitar. “I don’t want to be shy with my talents. If you don’t share your talents, it’s like hiding your light.” Wahome doesn’t plan on hiding his light anytime soon.

Callie is an eighth grade student who loves being around VC Students. On any given weekend, you can see Callie greeting other middle schoolers as they come in the doors, doing announcements during middle school services, or her favorite thing—praying for people at summer camp. Summer camp is where Callie really allowed the Lord into her life. Her first time at camp, Callie remembers being really meeting the Lord in worship. “Camp came in the midst of my parent’s divorce, and I remember worship really broke me down and opened me up. It was an incredible Holy Spirit moment.” Callie has attended summer camp every year that she could and plans to be a counselor once she’s out of middle school. This year, Callie is hoping to pray for lots of people at camp and help them give their hearts up to the Lord. “Middle school is rough. There’s a lot of drama with friends, and I want to help people connect with God and take that weight off their shoulders.” She also hopes to bring some of her friends from school—friends that are outside of the Vineyard. In the future, Callie isn’t sure what she wants to do. She does know, however, that she wants to keep an active role at the Vineyard for as long as God keeps her here.

Cheyanne is a senior at Thomas Worthington High School who actively serves in VC Students. Cheyanne is part of the VC Students core team and has frequently been called upon to share her story with others in high school ministry. Cheyanne has arthrogryposis, a disability that makes certain everyday activities a struggle to do on her own. “I’m not really afraid to ask for help, though,” she said. “Asking for help is part of being a believer.” Cheyanne entered high school as a believer, but really came into service in her junior year, shortly after she began attending Vineyard. Being at Vineyard strengthened her relationship with Christ, and with him she feels like she can overcome anything. Since coming to Vineyard, people have told her that they can see the Spirit shining through her. Cheyanne has preached for VC High School a couple times, but doesn’t like to call it preaching. “God has blessed me in certain ways and has called me to share what I have learned. I have this opportunity to share my story and show the world through a new lens.” While Cheyanne doesn’t find her story to be anything extraordinary, other people seem to. “I don’t see my life as a struggle because it’s just my life. God put me in this body for a reason. I’m not totally sure what God wants me to share, but I want to open people’s eyes to what God has to offer.” After graduation, Cheyanne is planning on majoring in psychology with the long-term goal of going to medical school to become a psychiatrist. As for where God’s calling her, Cheyanne will keep sharing her story. “I don’t know what it is about my testimony, but there is something special about it for other people. It’s not my physical body that matters, it’s Christ’s body in me.”
The youth in our congregation are extraordinary. They are the epitome of what Christ calls us to—kindness, love, and faithfulness. These young people—Wahome, Callie, and Cheyanne—are faithful and loving to their communities and our youth ministries, whether serving by teaching, praying, or sharing. As we recognize the achievements of our youth, let us remember to learn from them. As Jesus says in Mark 10:14, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” V I N E YA R D C O L U M B U S . O R G
