Chairman’s Chat

The “Fling” is now the “Flung” and I can concentrate on relaxing a bit and my colleague and co-organiser, Kaaren needs to do the same.

The most obvious thing that came out of the weekend is that without exception all Club members are finding it increasingly difficult to exercise their vehicles on today’s traffic jammed roads back in their hometowns.

One Aucklander was trapped on the Southern motorway for hours with Austin 7 on trailer, not arriving in Taihape until very late Friday night. The brave ones who motored to the venue all had stories of idiots in “moderns” taking incredible risks and not a cop was seen during the whole trip. The “Road to Zero”, Ha Ha!

I was able to navigate for Murray Toms in the wonderful 1917 Dodge Roadster in which he won the “John Goddard Trophy” and it took me back to the days when the Club had only Veteran or Vintage vehicles, and we owned the back-country roads. A number of entrants told me they had to work hard to keep up with Murray, even on the hills and there were plenty of them.

Some 13 local crews participated either as driver/nav or helpers in one form or another and their one comment was that the BoP area is sadly lacking in roads away from traffic. And it’s only going to get worse. The answer would probably be week-ends away to less busy areas from time to time.

We had some young crew members who so thoroughly enjoyed themselves that apparently they promptly got onto their electronic devices on Sunday afternoon, searching web-sites for Veteran and Vintage vehicles. I hope that they are successful in their search.

As a result of the Fling many more motorists will now travel the central North Island area knowing that there is amazing country to be explored away from main highways! Yours aye, Alastair.

April Monthly Club Night—Special Guest Paul Fahy

Arriving at the Club rooms at my usual time to start organising for supper anticipating a few more than the average night attendance for Monthly meetings I was surprised to find so many members there already and it was only 7 pm! By the time the meeting started at 7.30 there was standing room only and the draw card was Paul Fahey with his mates who were involved with Paul in his early days of racing. They were Noel McGechie and Trevor Parker who also gave a small talk.

I had heard the name Paul Fahey from time to time because John was part of that era in his motor scrambling days and interest in all thing’s motorbikes, and what an interesting man Paul turned out to be an able speaker with an incredible memory.

After introductions Donn started an interview format with Paul showing photos of his early beginnings on motorbikes first, and then later into saloon car racing, talking about each photo as it came up, giving us an in depth talk on each one.

Donn had really done his homework and with his extensive knowledge of the car racing scene he could comment on and add to what Paul was talking about this was just as interesting. Donn has a great ability to draw out the best in speakers.

Paul also was a force to reckon with in saloon car racing in NZ between 1965 and 1975 and had the most overall wins at Pukekohe, Levin, Bay Park, and Wigram. As the photos progressed thru you can see the changing cars of the time being the dominate saloon car of the year. Looking at the photos then you see the progression. As in all things in life, the racing of cars did finally come to an end for Paul, but he remained involved in the racing scene in other capacities.

A very interesting evening speaker, even though it was getting late members were keen to stay on for their supper as usual, and to talk to Paul and his mates.

Thank’s Donn for arranging this and your invaluable input into the evening. Jill

HIGHLAND FLING 2023

Let me start by issuing a heartfelt thanks on behalf of all of those who took part in this years’ Highland Fling, to Kaaren and Jim, Alistair and Gwen for all the many, many hours of travel and planning that went into this event. You did a superb job in 2021, but this was just next level and if entrants did not have a good time, it really had to be their own problem.

To your myriad of helpers from the Bay of Plenty Branch and beyond – again thank you, you all made our weekend so much more enjoyable. There were probably a dozen of you that helped, but special, special thanks must go to Jimmy Whittle and his family for the part that they played in all of this, from helping to find the roads we travelled, piloting our group through both stations, (and placing those orange stones on all the gates that were opened), and of course the Bagpipe Serenades, piping in the Haggis and “Happy Birthday” played by the pipers, including Jimmy’s son.

At briefing on Sunday morning, in the misty fog, Mr Fling – AJ, pronounced that most of us had practised the “5 P’s” of an event. PERFECT PREPARATION PREVENTS PISS-POOR PERFORMANCE!

Alistair and Kaaren, you did indeed practice those 5 P’s!

Our travel to Taihape on the Friday, from both directions was wet and miserable mostly, with a weather forecast for heavy rain and thunderstorms on Saturday, however the mood was upbeat when we arrived at The Gretna to collect our Rally Packs. A message I put on facebook on Friday night – “Who is taking bets on the weather tomorrow”, received two replies. One from Deidre saying she would not be betting and one from Kaaren telling me not to waste my money, it wasn’t going to be good. However, Saturday morning was damp on the ground for briefing, but it was not raining.

After a great briefing at 7.45a.m. on the road outside The Gretna, Alistair and Murray Toms led us off in Murray’s 1918 Dodge and set a cracking wee pace heading East and then South. Our notes said “Take a moment to peer into the dark depths as you cross the bridges”. Oh My Goodness, there were so many deep, deep chasms under those bridges, obviously washed out by many, many years of water flowing over the soft rock, but the native bush that had grown on the sides of those chasms had to be seen to be believed. It was very beautiful.

HIGHLAND FLING 2023

On through Moawhango Valley Road and onto Pukeokahu Road, we were enjoying watching the animals turning to watch our convoy head along their roads, probably wondering what in the heck this was all about. Then there were the 3 big black beefies standing together at a fence, turning their heads as each vehicle passed. Wonder what that conversation was about!!

As we turned onto Wairanu Road, ahead of us was a very majestic homestead dressed in white with the old-fashioned red trim, with a big lawn in front surrounded by beautiful colourful gardens including roses. Visions of British settlers coming into the Valley and making an impression came to mind. After turning onto Tuhoe Road, Graeme had lots of fun with a great surface and lots of corners and hills to swing around. (Maybe we should take some of today’s roadmakers out there to see how it is done.) Later on, Potaka Road became steep, windy and muddy and it was here that we had our first shower of rain, not long before we pulled into the Mangaweka Hall for morning tea. It was great to see the smiles on faces and particularly the people driving the wee raceabout who came in looking somewhat damp and muddy, but you could sure see the smiles on their faces, they were having fun!

We had been told to take “Private Sector” as opposed to a “Public Sector” breaks, so it wasn’t long before we were all heading up State Highway 1, heading for River Valley Lodge for lunch (somewhere out there!). We had a brief spell on SH1 and as we were in a short convoy of about 8 cars, we pulled to the left to let the 2 vans and several cars behind us pass, before we turned right. Graeme even had his arm out the window signalling them to pass, but NO! So we got back up to speed, indicated in advance of our right turn in a dedicated right turn lane and pulled to the centre. The vans headed past us on the left, when suddenly out of our right hand side we saw a white car coming past, on double yellow lines - with a car approaching! Everybody stopped, said white car pulled sharply to the left and went between two of our group, in front of the vans and then sailed off into the distance – no worries! Not nice for any of us though!

So away we went following our instructions, through Te Kapua Road and Manui Road on winding, narrow roads, many with a good crop of grass down the middle. Highlight of that section of travel was seeing a “One Lane Road” sign, followed by a little washout and then further down the road a “100km” sign. It was blatantly obvious that this was a one lane road and we were lucky if we could do 20 miles per hour, certainly not 100 kph!! Funny!

At the end of the road, we came onto State Highway 1 and I was completely disorientated as the sign said Taupo to the left and Palmerston North to the right, and we were turning left towards North, which appeared to be South to me!! (A woman’s view ay?) After sometime we found ourselves on Pukeokahu Road again and passing the 2 or 3 classroom Taoroa School from the opposite direction. When we got to the intersection of Mangahoata Road (where we had lunch after traversing the steep climb last Fling), we headed past the wee hall and on down the hill towards “River Valley Lodge” and Oh My Goodness – How did they find this place? A stunning Lodge, set on a river bank with a waterfall opposite and many grassed areas for various games, quoits, petanque, chess and more! Motel units and cabins and that beautiful dining room and bar. What a place to spend some time.

HIGHLAND FLING 2023

But Mr Fling was on our case again as we had another one and half hours travel to get to the Stations we were to go through. Another 30kms of unsealed, mostly good surface, but some a bit coarse, before we reached the entrance to Ohinewairua Station. Mr Oakland’s brakes had a few stopping issues coming down the Gentle Annie Road and were sending smoke signals to its owner, sending the four occupants out onto the road hurriedly, but all turned out okay.

At the entrance to 1885 “Ohinewairua Station”, we met up with Jimmy Whittle and his good lady and followed them onto the farm roads. As we descended from 910 metres at the top to 600 metres at the bottom of the road, each time we stopped to open a gate, an orange rock was placed on the gatepost. We wound our way down and down on a single lane road with wide expansive views in front of us. (Not a piece of Armco or Cheese-cutters in sight.) The beautiful green of the well managed pasture on this station, looked amazing in the sun on a beautiful afternoon. Reaching the bottom, we turned to follow Jimmy and the Smylies across the grassy paddocks, through a wee gully and down on to the farm road of Erewhon Station and wound our way right back up out of that deep valley, back to 900 metres – but that climb was to prove the undoing of a few of our number. The steepness of the road, combined with very low fuel tanks caused some to stop, while overheating on others caused a whole set of different problems. It proved to be that the majority of vehicles on the run were Model A’s, but it seems that they must have small fuel tanks, as it seems they were the ones that had the fuels problems! Poor Tail End Charlie had a big job ferrying fuel from Taihape out to the cars stuck on the hill and several were very late getting home on Saturday night. What a fantastic section of road that was though – just incredible!

By now it was getting late in the afternoon and we were zapping along the Moawhango Road, amazed at the laden apple trees growing on the sides of the road, and then into view came a very large shed, with a sign on it, “Skinny’s Toy Box”. We were left wondering who Skinny was and what sort of toys he had in that shed!

We arrived back in Taihape at 4.30p.m., 144 miles after leaving, but looking forward to another day tomorrow. Dinner with Deidre and Tony and Helen and Les finished a brilliant day.

9
Perhaps Norm Dewhurst didn't follow AJ’s instructions?

HIGHLAND FLING 2023

Day 2. We woke to grey skies, but it was only a very misty fog, so after the briefing at 7.45a.m., Alistair and Murray led us off to the North, turning left onto Pukenaua Road and later Ridge North Road. We drove these roads last Highland Fling, but this time the sun coming through the fog made for some very interesting and moody views – just beautiful. We were impressed with all the native plantings on the farm waterways. Our farmers really are doing their best for our environment. This was a really interesting road, we passed Minda Hills Genetics – a sheep farm, and later a New Zealand Carbon Farm, which appeared to be a mixture of natives and pine, what a great run we had and all before our morning tea stop in an overcast Hunterville.

From Hunterville, we headed north again for the final run to Mataroa School for lunch. Again we travelled on roads we did not know existed, twisting and turning, going up and down and side to side over narrow one lane roads with incredible scenery. How very lucky we are to live in such a special country. This last area had had many washouts during the previous weather events and we did wonder whether they will ever get fixed given the small amount of traffic using those roads.

Lunch at Mataroa School! What can you say? A tiny school with 37 pupils whose families put on a beautiful lunch. Someone shot a deer so we could have fresh venison and another family provided a beautiful ham on the bone – and the home baking was lovely. Then it was time to take those kids for a ride in our old cars and that needed no explanation, the smiles on their faces said it all.

Soon we headed down the road to Barry Cleavers farm for the Field Trials to take place. While Graeme and I didn’t take part, we watched the antics with amusement and thought how brave some were to put their old cars through that. But fun was had by all, some great slides and skids were applauded and all too soon it was over.

Dinner to finish was at The Gretna and they turned on a lovely spread, we even had Jelly and Icecream for desert, (red and green jellies!), plus fruit salad and carrot cake. Prizes were awarded for all sorts of things and it was fantastic to see one young lad (who had driven his Grandfathers Chrysler Roadster all weekend) get a prize, and also Phil Kidd from Upper Hutt’s grandson Blake get one for driving Phill’s Essex everywhere except through those steep Station roads, at 18, we thought he did very well!

Farewells and thank you’s were made, the Haggis ceremony completed, an Auction run for various items, then it was time to announce that next year, the Highland Fling, will be held from Feilding in the Manawatu from the 26th to 28th of April. They assured us they have some amazing roads to show us and to book our accommodation now! We will!!

Thanks again to everyone involved in making this a very special weekend event.

Our thanks to Raewyn and Graeme Fenn for their comprehensive report!

Port of Tauranga Jazz festival 2023

The weather gods turned on a beautiful day for the Annual Jazz festival at Mount Maunganui on the Easter Monday for all to enjoy the music and the Car Parade (Thank goodness said Doug Brown the organizer of the parade)

From about 9.15am members started to turn up at Coronation Park to assemble for the parade We were all parked on the street for a short time and as soon as the boss man Doug Brown and Lynda Downie turned up in their very distinctive blue Commercial truck and opened the entrance to the park and we all piled in onto the grassed area and parked up. The Mini club turned up on mass to add to the fun led in by our club member Deidre Rennie with Tony Fraser not far behind in a different car so two car family going on here.

There were cars on show that I had never seen before so I guess the fine weather bought them out of the garage for a run and magnificent some of them were, we had members dressed up for the occasion in period clothes to suit the era of car which they were driving. The general public were soon looking at the assembled cars, all 65 of them and no doubt some were drooling over their favourite cars on display many a discussion was had with owners and interested public making for a real buzz going on.

At 11am we all left the park to participate in the parade down the main street around into Salisbury Ave down to the end past the pools and then back down the length of the main shopping area, lots of people lined the streets to watch us go by all waving and some of us honking our funny horns as we went by.

By the time we were all back in the park again it was almost lunch time many of us of us bought out our picnic baskets, cups tea and coffee, and the odd bottle wine and sat in the lovely sun and enjoyed chat time catching up with friends and munching on picnic chow.

This was a great day out and the weather played ball to add to the enjoyment of the day.

Many Thanks to Doug for organizing the parade again this year and I for one look forward to next year’s parade.

I will try to dress up in clothes appropriate for the car but I’m not sure that the 1990’S apparel is much different to today (dressed down casual)

My 1948 Triumph Tiger T100 500cc —by Kelvin Nottle

Editor—This article was first published as a Motorcycle profile questionnaire to the Tauranga Classic M/C Club. Thanks for sending it to Klaxon Kelvin!

Hi everyone, my featured motorcycle is a 1948 Triumph T100 Tiger 500cc that was one of Edward Turner's finest twins. The original tiger in 1937 was a vertical twin with a single carburetor, developing 27hp and was good for 90mph.

The 1948 model still had a rigid frame, with upgraded telescopic forks from the early girder forks. The Triumph Tiger came, still with the instrument panel on the chrome tank, and blue pinstriping featured on the silver painted areas.

The tiger became one of the fastest twin motorcycles overnight, and the new bike could obtain 100pmh. I personally have not seen 100mph yet!

I have restored the bike from when purchased, having seen the bike advertised on trademe 10 years ago in Pukekohe. It was basically all there, however whilst a survivor it really was not an oily rag bike, that you could say was an original condition bike. Having been told the motor had been reconditioned, and the oil pressure seems ok, along with all the original paperwork from new, and every WOF since 1975, hey what could go wrong! My 1948 Triumph Tiger

What attracted me to the Tiger was the overall look, it still could keep up with modern traffic, at a more sedate pace, than trying to obtain 100mph on a previously owned 1954 BSA Goldstar. Besides, who doesn't like a cool looking Triumph?

So a little history of the bike:

The bike was purchased in November 1948 by Raymond Harper in Onehunga Auckland,. He sold it in 1950, to Trevor Barret King who held onto it until 1971, with 31,000 miles on the clock. At this time he sold it for the outrageous price of $100 dollars (everyone wanted Japanese bikes at that time) to Ray Clarke, who kept it until 1996. Another 14 years passed with a new owner Judith Turrell before I purchased it from a friend of Judith's family in 2013.

The Tiger has now traveled 38,000 original miles since new, with a recent motor rebuild in 2021 due to that oil pressure sitting on 5psi (and I'm thinking this is not going to end well!)

As the original white metal bearings are difficult to work with, the crank has been ground by Craig at Regal Automotive engineers in Tauranga, and shells inserted. Steve from Asplin Motors helped me rebuild the engine, as at that time I was living in Auckland.

The frame was powder coated in satin black by HPC in Auckland, along with Real Rides in Silverdale who undertook all the pinstriping and paint work on the bike in 2016.

So how does it ride..

The Tiger is an easy classic to ride, as long as you don't mind the only rear suspension being a sprung hub. The front brakes have to be used with the rear, otherwise pretty much nothing happens. It runs well for a twin and sits nicely at 55 mph without much fuss.

Lighting is 6V so forget going out at night for a blast, it needs tucking up before dusk.
